Connie Legg is inviting residents from across Renfrew County to literally get a leg up for Hospice Renfrew this coming Sunday. The annual Hike for Hospice kicks off at 2 p.m. at the Renfrew Presbyterian Church, as organizers prepare for another successful threekilometre fundraising walk or run. Legg, whoʼs a certified palliative care nurse, is a founding member of Hospice Renfrew, which has been home for 300 end-of-life residents since it opened in January 2008. A major impetus for getting involved with Hospice Renfrew was her own dadʼs death in the 1980s. “My dad died in his early 50s of cancer before palliative care had caught on,” says Legg. “He died in a small community hospital (outside Renfrew County) and it was not a good experience. I vowed that there should be a better way to die. That was my impetus for getting involved with the hospice.” Hospice Renfrew provides around-the-clock staff with a registered nurse and personal support care worker, while a doctor is always on call. The facility also has a full-time executive director and administrative assistant, a part-time volunteers co-ordinator, and close to 100 volunteers who fill a wide variety of roles, says Legg. “Thatʼs what I like about it. It really is community-driven. Itʼs all about supporting each other.” See HOSPICE, page 2
