Whitewater Brewing Company is toasting Canada’s veterans with their new Legion Lager. “We are extremely proud to join forces with The Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command to produce a new cobranded craft beer — the only beer that helps raise awareness and funds for legion programs for veterans,” said Whitewater officials. “Legion Lager will become available in our Ontario branches in May, and will soon be rolling out to local LCBOs, Beer Stores and retail outlets.” Plans are underway to expand nationally, as Legion Lager is one of only a handful of craft brewed lagers made in Canada. “We’re thrilled that Whitewater has partnered with the legion to support Canada’s veterans by donating five per cent of the brand’s sales to legion programs,” said Dominion ComSherry Haaima/Metroland mand president David FlanniRoyal Canadian Legion Cobden Branch 550 president Gene Phillion, left, joins Whitewater Brewing Company gan in a recent press release. “Those funds will help support programs to improve the lives of veterans and their families.” Flannigan looks forward to seeing the branches — whose volunteers work so hard to generate revenue to run local programs and services — embrace the new brand and the opportunities it will provide. “Being able to serve our own Legion Lager, in a can or on tap, at legion branches means we can offer our members and other patrons an added beverage choice when they stop in for a visit.” Sales from those purchases, he points out, also support the branches and the important work they do. Royal Canadian Legion Cobden Branch 550 president Gene Phillion said he’s thrilled with the idea. Dominion Command will be making a visit to Whitewater’s Cobden location, he said. “We’re hoping it’s going to do well,” he said, noting there’s been interest from across the province and beyond. “Anything that’s positive towards the legion is a good thing.” Many people don’t realize, said Phillion, that veterans aren’t just those who fought in the World Wars. “Vets are soldiers that are still active today. A veteran is a soldier and that’s who we have to support – more
Legion Lager will be available at legions and Whitewater Brewing Company for now, with plans for beer and grocery store availability. so than ever,” he said. “They’re coming back from the Middle East with a lot of problems, mentally and physically. Any help they can get is a good thing. I can’t help but think that this five per cent they’re going to get is going to help a lot.” Chris Thompson, one of Whitewater’s three owners/founders, is also pleased with this partnership. “We’re honoured to have been chosen to brew
a brand exclusively for an organization that does so much to help veterans. It’s a cause that is close to our hearts,” he said. The legion is a grassroots organization and Whitewater is pleased to be supporting such an important effort. “The legion does a lot of really cool things,” he said. “You see them every Remembrance Day. The nice thing about this is it will keep it in people’s minds a little bit more. They do so many things, not just for veterans but for the community.” When the owners heard the legion was looking to partner up with someone on this project, they jumped at the chance to get involved. “We spent a good couple months just ironing out the details and things like that, developing the recipe, coming up with posters and glassware and all those little things,” said Thompson. There’s been a good response to the beer itself. “It’s a lager, which, up ‘til now we’ve only ever done ales,” he said. “Different yeasts are used and then they’re done at different temperatures. Lagers tend to be more clean and easy drinking. Many of us in the Valley grew up drinking lagers. It’s a very nice, clean, easy drinking beer, comparable to our ale Farmer’s Daughter, but less hoppy.”

much. He was and will always be a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and son. He touched so many lives in his short life and will always be with us. There are no words great enough to thank them for their grace, kindness and hope. It is fundamentally important that the Ottawa Valley continues to have this service. Although I can never repay them for all they did for Jim and our family, I can do my best to make sure everyone is aware of this beautiful home and try to raise as much money as I can each year for all of those who are there now and in the future so they can be blessed with the Hospice Family as we were. The annual Hike for Hospice is set for Sunday, May 7, at MaTe-Way Park in Renfrew.

“As long as the sun shines down on me there is hope.” March 29, 2015, was the day my husband Jim was diagnosed with a brain tumour. As we sat on the bed in our room, our son, Jim and myself trying to absorb what was happening, these were the words he spoke to us. They became our motto throughout the journey of cancer. After he was diagnosed things moved very quickly, meeting with oncologists, surgeons, nurses and so on. There wasn’t much time to sit and think … really think … what a stage four tumour meant. The word terminal was never once spoken to us and so on we went. Jim Mason was and
continues to be the strongest human being I have ever known. He never once gave up hope through a 10-hour surgery, weeks of chemo and radiation, and never spoke the words, “I’m tired.” He never wanted to worry the kids or me, but the unspoken was very clear in front of us. He was slowly losing the battle. With the help of Community Care Access Center, home-care, family and friends, we were able to keep Jim at home and comfortable where he wanted to be for around eight months, until one day when I came home from work for lunch he was unconscious on the floor. This was the last day he was home with us. The nurses at the Arnprior Hospital gave him excellent care, but just as he was at home

around them. So to be able to rest in his bed and see this from his room was so important. It takes a very special person to work and volunteer at Hospice Renfrew. Everything from sitting with my husband watching endless hours of Star Wars, serving a warm meal and just being a loving presence brings comfort not only to the resident but to the family when they cannot be there. This always extended to our family as well. It was love and caring for the whole family, not just my husband. Their strong shoulders through our tears, warm cookies to bring a smile, guide us through the process of palliative care and even just a look if they were walking by to make sure we were OK. On Dec. 9, 2015, Jim lost his battle surrounded by all of us who loved him so very

Renfrew County paramedics responded to 95 drug overdose calls in 2016, which represents a 27 per cent increase from previous years. The paramedics also administrated naloxone 11 times last year, which represents a 57 per cent increase from 2015. Amber Hultink, advance care paramedic with County of Renfrew Paramedic Services; presented these statistics on April 26 during the Community Sessions: Fentanyl and Overdose, one of three last week hosted by the local health unit, at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Renfrew. Hultink says the overdose numbers encompasses any type of drug: alcohol, opioids, prescriptions and over-thecounter medicine, but she says it is certainly a noticeable increase. As for the naloxone use, she says it is a big increase. “It’s basically once a month, we are administrating it to someone who is barely breathing,” said Hultink. “Even if naloxone is administrated, still call 911 because the opioid can last longer than naloxone, so there is a chance the overdose could happen again.” Hultink was one of six speakers at the open session attended by about 50 members of the public getting information about drug use, prevention, treatment, harm reduction and enforcement in Renfrew County. “We want people to be aware,” said Kayla Schutt, public health nurse with the Renfrew County District Health Unit. “This is a knowledge exchange.” Although Schutt was unable to provide specific numbers, she confirmed that fentanyl is being used in Renfrew County and that the rates in Ontario are increasing. Const. Janice Sawbridge, community safety officer of the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, describes the evening as a proactive information night. See Naloxone, page 5

Renfrew firefighters make quick work of vehicle on fire Sherry Haaima Sherry.Haaima@metroland.com
Members of the Renfrew Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire just before 10 a.m. April 27 in a driveway on Opeongo Road. “The cause was probably an electrical malfunction in the engine compartment,” said Fire Chief Guy Longtin. “The car is a total write-off.” The vehicle owner was not in the car when the fire started, he said, and no injuries were reported.

“We know that it (fentanyl) is in Ontario. Fentanyl is a type of opioid and an overdose is a medical emergency. We want people to understand that and to be able to react.” Signs of an overdose from pain medications such as fentanyl will include one or more of the following: the person is unresponsive, breathing slowly or not at all, their lips or fingernails turn blue, their skin is cold/clammy, their body goes limp, they’re throwing up or choking, or making snoring or gurgling sounds. During emergencies, long distances in rural areas become a challenge, Sawbridge says. “Call 911 as soon as you suspect an overdose because of the time it may take for emergency services to arrive to assist,” said Sawbridge. “It’s another reason why people should consider getting a naloxone kit.” Naloxone kits are available at the health unit, No Frills in Renfrew, Ontario Addiction Treatment Centre, and Rexall. In Arnprior, the kits are at Rexall and Shoppers Drug Mart. All locations offer the kits free of charge. Naloxone is a drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, and allows time for the individual to be taken to a hospital to receive vital medical treatment. At the health unit, individuals need to meet certain eligibility criteria. When accessing the free kit at a pharmacy, all that is needed are an Ontario Health card and knowledge of someone who is taking an opioid. For more information, visit www.rcdhu or call the health unit at 1-800-267-1097.
Deana Talavera, manager at Ontario Addiction Treatment Centre holds up one of the Naloxone kits that can be obtained for free at the centre during the community meeting at April 26 at St. Joseph’s High School in Renfrew.

Renfrew council awards Beaumen’s the municipal recycling contract Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
At the Renfrew council meeting on April 25, council carried and approved a motion to execute the contract for the collection and processing of recycling materials with Beaumen Waste Management Inc. in the amount of $176,902. “At this time, there is no reason not to award the contract to Beaumen, who are the low bidder,” said Mike Asselin, director of development and works for the Town of Renfrew. At the March 7 meeting council choose not to award a tender for recycling services and retendered the contract. The only other bidder was Canadian Waste Management Inc. at a cost of $189,435, which is a difference of $12,533. Grants: The Town of Renfrew approved eight grants to community organizations at the April 25 meeting for a total of $6,400. The money came from the public relations grants to other organizations budget of $8,000. The top three groups receiving funds are: Heritage Renfrew: $2,000; Renfrew and Area Seniors Home Support $1,550 and Renfrew and District Food Bank $1,000. CIP: The Community Improvement Plan (CIP) is back for another year after council approval on April 25. Council first approved a CIP area on Dec. 1, 2015, for the implementation of financial incentive programs. For 2017, council approved a budget of $20,000, for businesses and organizations to make improvements to their building or property. Applications are open as of May 1 on a first-
come, first-served basis. Voting methods: Town clerk Kim Bulmer made a presentation on methods of voting in the 2018 municipal election. Council approved the use of voting by Internet, phone and the use of optical scanning vote tabulators to speed up the counting of paper ballots. Bulmer also informed councillors they have until the end of the year if they would like to consider making any changes to council composition. Proclamations: Renfrew Mayor Don Eady made two separate proclamations at the start of the meeting. Eady declared the week of April 22 to 29 as Pitch-In Week, and invited all citizens in the community to actively participate in this event. The second was to declare April 23 to 29 Volunteer Week, which urges the citizens to recognize the crucial role volunteers play in our community. “Renfrew is very blessed with the amount of volunteers we have,” said Eady. “Our town is full of good people who do good things for the town.” Trail: At the April 11 council meeting, council approved a motion in support of the Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail as a fully-multi-use trail supporting all forms of outdoor recreation. Patio: Santa Fe Southwestern Grill received approval from council on April 11 for the third year to have an outdoor patio. The patio will have a width of 24 feet and a depth of 12 feet for a total of 18 additional days. Succession planning: The town is implementing a succession planning early retirement incentive for the parks and recreation department.
“All six employees could be within six months of retiring,” said Kevin Hill, recreation director. The idea for the plan is for those eligible to retire and come back to work part-time for two years to educate and train the new hires. Litter issues: Council heard a report on April 11 from the development of works committee, including correspondence about students from

Former Renfrew Mayor Audrey Green, fourth from left, was asked to speak to council on April 25 by current Mayor Don Eady, third from the right on the history of the town crest. Green called the new logo ‘clean, precise and good for the town … but we must always remember to continue to preserve our heritage.” Eady said it is important for the people to know the history of the crest. Pictured with Green and Eady with a flag with the town crest are councillors Mike Coulas, Andrew Evans, Reeve Peter Emon and Coun. Arlene Jamieson.

Province of Ontario one correction away from debt crisis The Kathleen Wynne government turned the fiscal page Thursday and introduced a balanced budget, and if you listened carefully you could hear the congratulatory backslapping from Toronto all the way to Port Severn. It was 10 years ago when Ontario ran balanced budgets in 2006 and 2007, but that gave way to $20-billion-a-year deficits in 2008 and 2009 when the economy tanked and the Grits had no choice but to hand the auto industry a $3.3 billion lifeline, or face the collapse of auto manufacturing in Ontario. At the time, then premier Dalton McGuinty made a promise to balance the budget by 2017, and while the Liberals should be commended for getting their budget in order, there’s a bogeyman lurking in the province’s balance sheet. The provincial debt for this fiscal year is expected to hit $312 billion, and in a recent meeting with Metroland Media editors, senior economist with RBC Robert Hogue said “tough medicine” is needed to tackle the debt. “Debt has increased quite significantly and debt to GDP is running at 40 per cent,” he said. In 2016/17, the province expects to spend $11.4 billion on interest payments on that debt. That’s nearly $1 billion a month just to service existing debt, and in case you need to be reminded,
that coin comes from your pocket. To put it in terms we can all relate to, every person in Ontario would need to pony up $22,000 to pay off the debt. Hogue said this massive debt leaves the province without a rainy day fund in the event the economy slows to a point requiring stimulus spending, and if interest rates rise, as expected they will, the interest payments on the debt would skyrocket. We agree with Hogue when he says it’s time the province create a plan to tackle the debt by creating a “hard target for debt to GDP ratio” that sits much lower than where we are now. However, we didn’t get that Thursday. What we did get was a desperate Liberal government waving costly carrots in voters’ faces. The Wynne government’s shopping list includes a drug plan for those under 24 costing $465 million a year and $200 million next year to increase affordable licensed child care spaces. Noble programs for sure, but not at a time when the province continues to add about $10 billion a year in new debt as long as they hold power, and if the Wynne government continues to spend like drunken sailors on shore leave — generations of Ontario residents will be buried under a mountain of debt from which they may never escape.
Make sure you have this simple lifesaving device: fire department To the editor:
In the wake of a tragic fatal fire in Renfrew on Feb. 10, the Renfrew Fire Department would like to remind the public to ensure they have working smoke alarms on every storey of their home and outside all sleeping areas. This being 2017, I am really struggling to understand why so many homes still do not have proper protection when it comes to keeping their loved ones safe in the event of a fire. Let’s just have a look at how long smoke alarms have been required by law in the province of Ontario. Since the introduction of smoke alarms to the residential market in 1971, several revisions and requirements have been made: • In 1975 the Ontario Building

Code required all residential homes to have smoke alarms outside the sleeping areas. • In 1998 the Ontario Fire Code was amended and required one smoke alarm be installed outside the sleeping areas in existing Ontario homes. • Effective March 2006 the Ontario Fire Code requires smoke alarms on every storey as well as outside all sleeping areas of residential dwellings in Ontario. • The 2014 Ontario building code is now requiring smoke alarms in every bedroom as well as numerous other requirements. So with all these requirements and laws, fire deaths are on the decline in Ontario, correct? Well actually the opposite is true. Last year Ontario saw the most fire
deaths in over 10 years. In 2016 there were approximately 102 fatalities, in 2015 there were 94 and in 2012 there were 69. So far in 2017 we are already passed last year’s numbers. So the point I’m trying to make is that smoke alarms have been required by law for many years. Yes, it most certainly is the law. Several fines can and have been issued throughout the province. One example would be a $235 fine for failing to maintain a smoke alarm in operating condition. The cost of a smoke alarm is very reasonable, especially for a lifesaving device that normally lasts 10 years. Prices can vary depending on features however; they can be purchased for as little as $10. One of the arguments we frequently hear when we find batter-

ies removed, or a disconnected smoke alarm is: “The alarm keeps going off when I cook toast or every time I use the oven, so I disconnected it.” This issue can usually be solved by either relocating the device to a more suitable location, or by using the HUSH feature that is available on most newer smoke alarms. The HUSH feature, when pushed, will temporarily silence the alarm. After a short period of time the alarm will reset to normal operation. Roughly enough time to butter the burnt toast. Another great feature now available is a 10-year sealed lithium ion battery. This unit requires no battery changes for the entire life of the unit. All that is required is a monthly check and a light cleaning with compressed air or a vacuum. ediTorial: Managing Editor: Theresa Fritz, 613-221-6225 theresa.fritz@metroland.com news ediTor: Sherry Haaima sherry.haaima@metroland.com 613-432-3655 x42 reporTer: Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com 613-432-3655 x44 The deadline for ediTorial submissions is friday aT 5:00pm
Many advances have been made to the technology, features and effectiveness of these devices. The array of choices now available to consumers can be somewhat confusing. Please don’t be afraid to contact The Renfrew Fire Department for assistance. You can also use the manufactures website for help. All smoke alarms come with helpful installation instructions as well as maintenance tips. Having and maintaining a smoke alarm is one of the best and least expensive ways to provide early warning of a potentially deadly fire, so let’s ensure we are all protected. Remember, only a working smoke alarm can save your life, or the life of a loved one. Michael Guest Fire prevention officer, Renfrew Fire Department

When A.L. Handford climbed to the roof of the separate school to photograph Lochiel Street looking north there was no talk of oil scarcity. A few cords of wood in the yard or, better still, split and piled in the shed would supply the stoves and keep the house warm. A can of coal oil, sealed with a corn cob or a potato, would fill all the lamps and the lantern. What else was oil for? And Arabs some believed were just fellows who rode around on camels. The backyard was for the garden. Potatoes, carrots, onions and cabbage were all home-grown and when put away in the cellar in the fall would make many good meals all winter. For raising bread - every good wife baked her own - some even grew their own hops. The barn in the backyard often served as the home for the family cow and then milk was no problem. There was usually a surplus left over that could be sold to the neighbors. The barn also made a good hen house and in the days before garbage collection there was nothing like a few hens to clean up the table scraps. Then before council brought out bylaws to the contrary there were always those - and they were not always the most popular people - who persisted in plaguing their neighbors by using their barn as a pen for the pig. Red maples are mysterious trees Michael Runtz Nature’s Way
When I worked in Algonquin Park, my friend, mentor, and boss Dan Strickland used to talk about the “spring colours.” Our area is famous for the “fall colours” that in autumn paint hillsides with dazzling shades of orange, red, and yellow but Dan astutely noted that in early spring, forests also display a flush of colour, albeit one considerably more subtle than the brazen colours that dominate the autumn landscape. He was referring to the soft greens, greys, and pinks that appear when tree leaves first begin to open. Other colours are present in early spring and while they aren’t due to the opening of leaves, trees do create them. Those colours arise from tree flowers that are currently on display in local forests. Some, like those of sugar maple and ironwood, are yellow-green while others, like those of pin cherry and downy serviceberry, are white. Some species of trees sport “perfect” flowers in which both the stamens, the male parts that produce pollen, and the pistil, the female part that receives pollen and contains eggs that after fertilization become seeds, are housed in one package. Chokecherries bear this type of flower. Other trees bear flowers that contain only one sex. In white pines, each tree holds both flower sexes but the female flowers are up high while the male flowers are lower down on the tree. Pines are wind pollinated so this physical separation helps prevent selfpollination (pollen cannot rise from a tree’s male flowers onto its female flowers positioned high above them), and explains why pine cones are always near the top of a tree. Some species produce only one sex of flower on individual trees. Trembling aspen is one, producing long, drooping catkins that contain stamens on some trees and pistils on others. Maples are a more complex group. Many species have individual trees that bear flowers containing both sexes while other individual trees produce unisexual flowers but have both types on the same tree. And then there are red maples, whose flowers are currently making forests blush red. Now, I’m referring to our native red maple, not the common cultivar of Norway maple planted in urban settings that bears red leaves all summer. Most young red maples produce flowers containing only one sex (thus, some trees are male, others female). To my eye, female flowers are redder than male flowers, which display an orange tint. Older trees can bear both flower sexes but they are

What is more unusual is that in the autumn, the leaves of trees that contain only female flowers turn bright yellow while those of trees with male flowers turn bright red! There is another, even more unusual feature of red maples. In late winter and early spring, moose seek them out to devour strips of their bark. They attain these by jabbing their lower incisors (like white-tailed deer, moose lack upper incisors) into the bark and ripping it upwards, producing distinctive marks on the trunk. Oddly, moose ignore the bark of sugar maples, which usually greatly outnumber red maples in a forest. Why moose select only red maples remains unknown. Red Maples truly are trees of mystery! Blood clinic welcomes shuttle Canadian Blood Services bus available for groups willing to donate at local clinics Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
The ‘Blood Bus’ recently made a life-saving stop in Renfrew. The Canadian Blood Services ‘Give Life Shuttle’ delivered 10 members of the Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) team from its Eastern Operations Regional Headquarters at 2 Innovation Dr. to a blood donor clinic. The donation really is a lifesaver. The 10 donors, if all of their blood could be used, will help 30 patients. The blood collected will be separated into three different components — red blood cells, plasma, and platelets — to help those in need. Mike Poehlmann, plant engineer and dam safety co-ordinator, helped organize the group for the April 11 blood donor clinic at the Renfrew Legion. He found it hard to book an appointment in Arnprior and inquired what it would take to host a clinic, and was informed of the group-based plan for the shuttle. Poehlmann took it to the management of OPG, who gave it the green light, and he pitched it at their office safety meeting. Mary Ann St. Michael, territory manager for Canadian Blood Services, came and spoke to them and set up a ‘What’s Your Type?’ booth. “The group was willing and here we are,” said Poehlmann. As for the bus ride across town? “Every-
one felt spoiled and thought it was fancy, they brought us right to the door.” Poehlmann says the process to book the bus and set up a group block of time was easy. “Anybody interested in doing [this], everyone got on board, and it was really easy to do.” St. Michael says they work to make it easy. “We pick them up for an existing clinic and we pick times to try and make it as easy as possible,” said St. Michael. “We give them marketing materials and drive them back.” Poehlmann says he has never required a blood donation and read about the need in this newspaper. St. Michael says Canadian Blood Services is moving toward getting more groups involved. “We have that great shuttle,” said St. Michael. “It’s a team-building opportunity for groups. It’s an opportunity for different kinds of conversation between management and workers.” She says giving blood is a unique way to help the community. “It’s a different way to give back. We are not asking for money, we are asking for time and blood,” said St. Michael. The next blood donor clinic in Renfrew is set for June 28 at the Bonnechere Manor, 470 Albert St. from 1 to 7 p.m. Anyone who is interested in putting a group together for the Give Life Shuttle is encouraged to contact St. Michael: MaryAnn.StMichael@blood.ca or by phone: (613) 560-7229.

Art contest to mark 150th Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
Artists, it’s time to flex your paintbrushes for a uniquely Canadian contest. The Rocky Mountain House restaurant (RMH), in partnership with the Renfrew Art Guild (RAG), is welcoming submissions for a new art contest. RMH is sponsoring the contest after being approached by the RAG. “I wanted to do something to support local artists and showcase their talent,” said RMH owner Amy Rule. The theme for the contest, which is up to the discretion of the artist, is Rocky Mountain.

Diana Wakely, Dwyene MacNabb and Amy Rule hold the first entry to the Rocky Mountain House Art Contest.
THIS WEEK’S FEATURE
“We just said ‘Rocky Mountain.’ We just assume people will do the mountains, but I am interested to see if anyone does Rocky Mountain House,” said Rule. Announcing the contest early, organizers hope it will give artists time to create something with the theme in mind. The paintings must be delivered to the RMH between June 10 and June 11. They will be displayed from June 14 to June 24, with judging on the final day from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. “We thought it was a good fit,” said the RAG’s Diana Wakely. “People will be able to look at them and choose their favourite.” There are prizes for first, second and third, as well as a people’s choice award — all receiving a gift certificate. She says this is a unique avenue for local artists. “This is different than Art in the Park; this gives artists an opportunity to expose their work in a different way,” said Wakely. Paintings are welcome in any medium. The size requirements are between 11-by-15 inches and 24-by-36 inches. All paintings must be framed, signed and ready for hanging. Artists must complete a registration form, which can be found at: www.therockymountainhouse.com.

SOLD Thank You For Your Business! Sherri Cobus 613-432-1947 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, May 4, 2017 17
Liberal budget hides $5-billion deficit: Yakabuski April 27, Kathleen Wynne’s provincial government tabled its 2017 budget that continues the path of out of control spending. Meanwhile they are hiding a massive operational deficit which will result in degraded services that will make life harder for Ontarians, says Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski. “The government is hiding more than $5 billion operational deficit through cash grabs, unauthorized pension assets, and one-time and unusual revenue.
“The Wynne Liberals are cooking the books a year before the next election,” said a press release from the MPP’s office. “Additionally, the Liberals have no plan in this budget to get the debt under control. They’ve more than doubled the debt in just 14 years, and Ontario is worse off as a result. Moreover, it is eroding the services families depend on, and placing a burden on future generations, which they do not deserve.” Nothing in the budget spoke specifically about the expansion of Highway 417, he added.
United Way dishes out funding The United Way of Renfrew County announced on April 26 that a total of nine local charities would receive over $198,000. And a number of Arnprior and Renfrew organizations are receiving money to help fund health and social services projects and services for 2017/2018. “We have a diverse group of agency partners delivering innovative and essential programs and services throughout Renfrew County and
United Way is honoured to support their efforts,” said Renfrew County United Way chair Doug Tennant. In Arnprior, the Arnprior Family Preschool Resource Centre received $6,000 to set up an emergency basic needs fund to support young families. North Renfrew Family Services will get $20,680 to continue support of their Successful Relationship Building program.
“The lack of twinning for 417 is certainly an issue I will be following-up at the earliest opportunity with the Minister of Transportation” said Yakabuski. Additionally, Yakabuski said that although the government voted down his Gas Tax Private Member’s Bill last month, he had hoped the Liberals would have included it in their budget measures and expand the gas tax to all municipalities and not just those with public transportation systems. “Kathleen Wynne had an opportunity today
to level the playing field in regards to the gas tax,” said Yakabuski. “Instead she picked politics over good public policy and as a result our roadways and bridges will not get the funding they need.” The release goes on to say: “A hidden deficit, scattershot spending to bribe voters with their own money, the continued fire sale of Hydro One, and once again ignoring rural Ontario. For these reasons John Yakabuski, and the entire Ontario PC Party, will be voting against this reckless budget. “
Three county-wide groups also received funding. Hospice Renfrew, which is based in town, got $15,000 to support the implementation of a family grievance counsellor. This service will support family members with counselling prior to their loss for a quicker recovery from the grieving process. Family & Children’s Services of Renfrew County will receive $25,000 to continue their program to provide Safe Shelter for Youth who are at risk or homeless. Two separate grants went to Robbie Dean Family Counselling Centre, which will get
$25,000 for crisis and mental health clinics throughout Renfrew County. The centre will also receive $1,000, for a speaking event featuring Barbara Coloroso, internationally known child and youth specialist. The Coloroso event took place in March of 2017. In addition to these agency grants – United Way of Renfrew County supports “Dial 211 Ontario” with $12,666 annually. Dial 211 is a free information service offering direction to individuals seeking help with social/ health issues in Renfrew County and The City of Pembroke.

Four Renfrew wrestlers compete on the big stage in Windsor Harry Smith
The Vipers Wrestling Club is pleased to announce that four local wrestlers competed in the biggest tournament of the year. The event, which was held at the University of Windsor’s Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse and had male and female wrestlers, included nearly 700 competitors. This tournament hosted the provincial champions from every province across Canada in 12 male weight divisions and 12 female weight divisions. Wrestling Canada helped back the event known as the National Cadet/ Juvenile Wrestling Championships. The wrestlers were between the ages of 15 and 18, and included both freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions. It also served as trials for Canada’s international cadet team. The four wrestlers who competed were: Lily Warren: Lily had to overcome many hurdles this season including sustaining a concussion during her last match at juvenile provincials. After Lily’s recovery she then attended the 2017 EOSSAA High School Wrestling Championships placing second which qualified her to attend the 2017 OFSAA high school championships where she finished fourth. Lily had tough competition at the nationals. She wrestled hard, but fell short of placing on the podium. Lily has prov-

Lily is known as “The Beast.” Teegan Tabbert: Teegan also has had some ups and downs this season, but after a tough loss at the juvenile provincials she pulled herself together placing first at 2017 EOSSAA high school wrestling championships qual-
ifying her for the 2017 OFSAA high school championships where she came back for a tough loss and won five consecutive matches then lost her final match placing her fourth. Nationals proved to bring out Teegan’s best wrestling with 17 in her weight class, she wrestled hard and came out sixth
in her division. Teegan shows tremendous willpower, personal strength and courage. Teegan is known as “The Tiger.” Savana Pinsent: Savana is the youngest member of the Vipers national team. Savana attended the 2017 cadet provincials placing second out
14 wrestlers. Savana then attended the 2017 EOSSAA high school wrestling champions taking first qualifying her to attend the 2017 OFSAA high school championships where she placed second. Nationals for Savana had her facing the top wrestlers in her 60-kg weight class from across the country. Savana ended up placing third in freestyle and fourth in trials. Savana is known as “The Punisher.” Jolie Brisco: Jolie is a joker of sorts, but when it comes to wrestling she is focused and ready. Jolie competed at the 2017 cadet provincials placing first out of nine wrestlers. Jolie then competed at the 2017 EOSSAA high school tournament placing first qualifying her to attend the 2017 OFSAA high school championships where she placed fifth out of 31 wrestlers. Nationals consisted of 20 competitors with Jolie finishing sixth. She went on to wrestle in the Greco championship and beat out the OFSAA champion, placing first in Greco becoming the champion. Jolie is known as “The Jaguar.” On April 20, Brisco, Tabbert and Pinsent went to the Gotham City Girls Tournament held in New York City, then on May 6 to 7 Brisco, Tabbert, Pinsent and Warren will be heading to Hamilton to compete for a chance to wrestle with Team Ontario and then compete at the Canada Summer Games to be held in Winnipeg.

Cooper Brown has strong finish at Augusta University
Renfrew’s Cooper Brown golfed in six events for Augusta University this season and shot par or better six times. His best finish was a tie for 12th at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. His low round was a 70 (-2) in the Jaguars’ home event, the 3M Augusta Invitational. Brown competed in 18 rounds of Division I golf with an average score of 73.94 across his six tournaments. The Augusta University men’s golf team won the MidEastern Athletic Conference Championship for the third year in a row, after shooting 43-under par across three days at Crosswinds Golf Club. Augusta finished round three 21-under par and won the event by 36 strokes to receive an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament starting May 15. Although Brown’s season is over because he did not make the top five team, Augusta staff says all of the players, including Brown, helped the team reach the postseason.

Valley Animal Rescue auctioning off two autographed Ottawa Senators photos Valley Animal Rescue is delighted to have two autographed Ottawa Senators pictures in their spring online auction to raise funds for Nolan’s surgery. The pictures are autographed by Jean-Gabriel Pageau, who scored four goals Saturday against the New York Rangers, and popular player Bobby Ryan. Picture size is 7.5 by 9.5 inches in a 12.5-by 15.5-frame, and matted. Bidding closes at noon on May 8. Nolan is a 10 year-old beagle that Valley Animal Rescue took in after he was abandoned. It
was discovered recently that he has a large, benign parathyroid tumour that needs removal. The estimated cost is $2,500, providing there are no complications. All proceeds from the auction will go towards Nolan’s surgery. Anyone wishing to donate to Nolan can do so at his Canada Helps account set up under Valley Animal Rescue https://www.canadahelps. org/en/charities/valley-animal-rescue/nolanssurgery-campaign/or you can send an etransfer to valleyanimalrescue@hotmail.com . Close to perfection Ronnie Brown recently bowled a 313 game at the Opeongo Bowldrome. Usually there are a few bowlers who bowl a 300 game in a season but what makes this one special is Brown just turned 82! A score like that is amazing for any bowler let alone someone in her 80s. Opeongo Bowldrome presented her a trophy for her amazing game, which she printed out to show everyone. Submitted

Ladies basketball week three results Rob Warren
After two nights, the Renfrew Optometrists was the only team undefeated in ladies' basketball. The Reunions took care of that by defeating them 32-22. The Reunions never trailed, slowly extending their six point (20-14) half time margin. Katie Dolan, with 10 points, was the only player to hit double digits. The Basket Brawlers picked up two wins at the expense of the Reunions and Frances/Lemke Cooperators. Taylor Sul scored 14 of her game high 19 points to keep the Reunions within five points at half time. It was not enough as the Brawlers extended their 24-19 margin to win 40-34. A new look! Not only has spring finally arrived in the Ottawa Valley, but the library has also experienced some renewal and, hopefully, rebirth. With the help of the amazing staff who put in hours of their own time, volunteers and even some of the spouses (especially Tom Freemark!), the entire main floor of the library has a new look. Since coming to the Renfrew library a little over two years ago, my vision has been to bring the people up to the front of the building where the light and architecture of our beautiful Carnegie library can be seen and enjoyed. This move was done to create more welcoming and comfortable spaces where people can gather, learn, read, or share ideas. The library building may be small in size, but we are determined to make it function as best as we possibly can. We encourage all of you to come in for a visit and let us know what you think! Part of the change involved creating a teen zone. Using part of an old circulation desk and

purchasing a new computer, a small computer bar has been created. New chairs and a second table have also been purchased and should be arriving soon. A charging station will also be added. We want students to know they are welcome to come in and group study, or hang out and read. In addition to this new area, we will be looking for members to form a TAG (teen advisory group) in the near future. We need input in order to tailor services and programs that teens actually want to see. Finally, we have begun to purchase some books for the LGBTQ teens as well, as there was a noted lack of these titles in the past. It’s important for everyone to have a safe place to go. The adult reading area has also been relocated, making it more open and available. As with the teens, we are also tailoring our services and programs to better serve our adult and senior residents. In order to better utilize the space, many titles with low usage have been removed from the shelves. I want to reassure everyone that these titles are not thrown in the trash unless they are stained and/or torn. There

In memory of Carl Warren November 1940 – May 4, 2016 In loving memory of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. We only just lost you, the pain is hard to bear. Do we have to go through life knowing you’re not there? Please someone explain to us why he had to go. Are there any reasons we really need to know? We sit here and remember all the lovely times we shared The talks and laughter of everyone you cared. We are told the pain will ease in time, and we will think of him without a tear. But that will be impossible we need to have him here. He was our very world to us, our ever guiding star. Just kiss us softly on the cheek and tell us where you are. OVF offers a wide array of services from Education Savings Plans to Retirement Planning and are here for every stage to help customers achieve their financial goals. A large part of financial planning often includes protecting your family from the unknown, for this Phillips says she has a wide selection of life insurance and critical illness products to offer our clients as part of their overall financial plan. One product she would like to highlight is the guaranteed monthly income products. “We work with several companies who offer guaranteed monthly income in retirement,” said Phillips. “Which can be withdrawn tax-free in certain circumstances.” These products can offer a 5 per cent annual bonus which helps grow income leading into retirement and provide estate protection. Some of the financial products they offer are: registered retirement savings plan, registered education savings plan, tax-free savings accounts, nonregistered investments, life insurance (including guaranteed issue), critical illness insurance, disability insurance and health and dental insurance. Renfrew County District School Board engages students to open the box Congratulations to students for DI success Susan Humphries
The board of trustees and the senior administration were challenged at our recent board meeting to work through a series of puzzles and open the box! McNab Public School principal Tracey Stevens, Angie Miller and three of her students helped us work through seven puzzles that were all based on the topic of maple syrup and had components of math, science, critical thinking, co-operation, communication and more. In small teams, we worked to solve our puzzle and open one of the seven locks on the box. If we needed help, the students were very keen to provide us with some hints that would help us. In the end, we did solve all the puzzles, opened the box and discovered small bottles of maple syrup, maple candy and maple lollipops that had been made by the students. What a great way to engage students and get them thinking critically and co-operatively! Congratulations to Mrs. Miller for her enthusiasm and creativity in putting this puzzle (and others) together. Destination Imagination
Congratulations to RCIS and Highview Public School students on their regional win which gives them the opportunity to compete internationally in Tennessee at the end of May. There were two teams from RCIS that qualified and they included the following: Tones of Creativity: Hannah Hubert, Olivia Smart, Carson Lefebvre, Alex Wroe and Kenya Stevenson. Ready, Willing and Fable: Jonathon Roach, Cassidy Friske, Mallory Delarge, Mallory Lambert and Chris Cayan. We wish them all the best and hope they enjoy the competition, make some new friends and appreciate this experience! Thanks to the teachers who support this work- at RCIS, thanks to Jayne Stevenson and Anne Lefebvre and at Highview, thanks to Jamie Chubak.
voice at our board table as the Senate will work with the student trustees who will bring issues, concerns and suggestions forward. The Senate would be made up of two representatives from each public secondary school in the county. This would include the “head of the student council and one other member of the student council chosen by their peers. Most other Boards in Ontario have a similar structure with the Student Trustees leading a Student Senate. Many thanks to both Connor and Nic for their efforts on this proposal as well as the time and energy they have spent on working with all secondary schools across the county. Connor will be graduating this year and has completed his two year term and a new student will be elected on Friday April 28. Nic Edge will continue for one more year to allow for a one year overlap. We wish Connor all the best in his future studies and look forward to working with both Nic and a new student trustee in the fall. Susan Humphries is the Renfrew County District School Board trustee for Renfrew, Horton and Greater Madawaska.
DI kids back at it
Renfrew Collegiate Intermediate School Grade 8 Destination Imagination teams are busy fundraising for their upcoming contest in Tennessee. From left are Malorey Lambert, Olivia Smart, Cassidy Friske, Kenya Stevenson, Hannah Hubert, Alex Wroe, Chris Cayen, Jon Roach and Carson Lefebvre. The students hit the streets this April 28 to rally support, donations and sponsors for their trip to Tennessee to compete at Global Finals. Placing in the top two positions at provincials has qualified these two teams to continue on to Global Finals where they will compete against teams from all around the world. This is an incredibly exciting venture that gives these students a chance to demonstrate their problem solving skills and growth over the last 6 months. They have been working hard to raise funds and will continue to do so over the next few weeks. This past weekend they spoke to business owners on the main street and shared their adventures while asking for donations from customers at Walmart. They will be present at the Downtown Garage Sale this Saturday and Melissa Friske is hosting a Jazz Dance Workshop on Sunday May 7 at the Recreation Centre from 6-8 p.m. in support of DI, $20 payable at the door. You can also offer support online at https://rcdsb. schoolcashonline.com. Simply choose the items tab, look for RCIS DI, and choose to donate (you do not have to register to a specific child).

Emerson’s mouse catching antics threw Mother into a fit Mother couldn’t understand how a mouse could get into the house. There were no holes in the baseboards like the ones at the Northcote School, she saw to that. All the doors going into the house shut tight, and yet during the winter, Father set at least two traps before he went to bed, and it was nothing to hear a mousetrap snap in the middle of the night downstairs. And I would know, and yet I never actually saw him do it, that Father would slide the lid off the Findlay Oval, and the dead mouse would be fed into the fire box. But spring had arrived, and the mice, to Mother’s great relief, now preferred the barns. My brother Emerson loved the mice. He was sure if he caught one, he could train it to do tricks, and it would become a pet. Mother, of course, forbid him to even think such thoughts. Then one night I saw Emerson do something I was sure would send him right off to reform school, which I heard talked of by the Senior Fourth boys, but knew little about. All I knew was it was the last place on earth any youngster wanted to be. Somehow Emerson had caught a mouse out in the barn, and he stood in the frame of the kitchen door, with the mouse dangling by its tail from his clenched fist. He announced he was going to train the squirming and squawking thing to do tricks,
and would charge at least a nickel for the show he expected to put on for the entire neighbourhood. Well! Mother’s screams could be heard in Admaston. My sister Audrey moved like a bullet to climb MARY COOK onto a chair, and I ran behind the curtain that hung in the staircase leading to the upstairs, peaking out to watch, but well away from the action. Father never took his eyes off the Ottawa Farm Journal. He was well used to Emerson’s antics, and unless he was causing someone bodily harm, shut his mind and his eyes to whatever my brother was up to. Mother came at Emerson swinging a towel in the general direction of the mouse, only connecting after several tries. I didn’t think that was a smart thing for her to do, because once she hit the mouse, it went flying off Emerson’s clenched fingers, and vanished into the parlour, the closest door of escape. The first thing Mother ordered Emerson to do was go to the wash basin, and scrub his hands thoroughly with the lye soap. She was sure every disease known to man was first started by a mouse. She told Father she wasn’t going to bed until the mouse was caught. All Father said was, “better make a cup of tea, you’ll be up a long time.” Well, the mouse was gone. There was no doubt about it. It found a safe haven in some crevice in the old log house, and Audrey said she wouldn’t be

surprised if it stayed hidden over the summer and into the winter. Well, such a fuss! I thought this would be a good time to bring up the issue of bringing a barn cat into the house, strictly as a mouser. Well, Mother wasn’t having anything to do with that idea either. Animals belonged in the barn, and that’s all there was to it. It was pitch dark outside when it was finally decided we would all go to bed. Mother ordered Father to put out at least four traps, convinced the mouse couldn’t avoid all of them. Father went to the wood shed, and set the traps, one in the parlour, and three in the kitchen. I knew the poor mouse didn’t stand a chance.
Sleep didn’t come easily for me that night, as I pictured in my mind’s eye, the poor terrified mouse looking for an escape. And then it happened. Not one mouse trap snapped, but four in a row! Well, that tore it. Mother said a barn cat could be brought into the house at bedtime, but she wanted it out first thing in the morning. After that we never knew if the cat caught a mouse or not. But Mother went to bed content, I was thrilled to have a cat in the house, even overnight, and my brother Emerson still thought he could make a pile of money if he could teach a mouse to do tricks.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
