public that when you buy drugs on the street, there is no way of telling whether they have been laced with more powerful substances such as opioids.

"You can't see them, smell them or taste them. If you buy and consume any type of illicit drug, you are putting yourself and potentially others at extreme risk," says Const. Hunt. "People need to educate themselves and their kids."

Andrew Keck, a Renfrew County District Health Unit (RCDHU) public health nurse working in harm reduction, said the health unit continually monitors overdose rates, which are typically "relatively low and stable."

This is the first time RCDHU has issued this level of alert, he noted.

"Whenever we see an increase, which is not often, we reach out to our partners to try and obtain more information about the overdoses they may have heard of and what type of drugs," said Keck.

For those hesitant to seek help when an overdose occurs for fear of repercussions, he points out there is a Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act. "If you are to seek medical help for yourself or someone on-scene, neither of you will charged for possessing or using drugs," said Keck. "That's one of the major fears of people. That act does offer you some protection."

"If you're going to use drugs, don't use alone, have Naloxone and call 911 if there's a problem," said Keck.

There is a variety of ways to get Naloxone, which is provided free of charge.

"The easiest way for most people is to go a local pharmacy - there are 28 pharmacies in Renfrew County that are supplied. We do suggest calling ahead to make sure they have them on hand.

They'll provide training with the kit," says Keck.

Kits and training are also available at the health unit in Pembroke and at Ontario Addiction Treatment Centres in Pembroke and Renfew. There is also a ministry website www.ontario.ca/ page/where-get-free-naloxone-kit that allows you to see where in your community kits are provided.

RCDHU says if you're going to use drugs: • Don't use alone - If you overdose, there will be no one there to help.

• Don't mix drugs - Don't mix drugs with other drugs or alcohol, as it puts you at higher risk of overdosing.

• Go slow - Quality of street drugs is unpredictable. Start by using in small amounts (testers or test doses) to check the strength of what you are using.

• Carry Naloxone/Narcan® - Naloxone can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, and is available free to people who use drugs in addition to their family and friends.

• Know your tolerance -

Risk of overdose increases if you are a new user or haven't used in 3+ days.

Understanding the signs of an overdose can help save a life. These signs can include: • Breathing is very slow

A sudden increase in the number of local drug overdoses in the past week has prompted officials to issue a warning to the public.

In one of the cases, police are investigating the possibility of a death being drugrelated, says Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Const. Tina Hunt.

"Renfrew County and District is experiencing a sudden increase in the number of overdose reports in the last week, mostly in the Arnprior area," says a May 2 Renfrew County District Health Unit press release.

"Cocaine laced with fentanyl and the drug 'Purple' (purple heroin) are reported to be involved in the most recent overdoses. We are warning people who use drugs that Fentanyl or Carfentanil can be mixed into other illicit substances."

Information from the Renfrew detachment of the OPP indicates there have been at least five suspected overdoses in the past week.

"Access to several extremely dangerous opioids is not limited to larger cities; these drugs have infiltrated every corner of our province in some form or another.

Purple heroin, known locally as 'Purp', is typically a combination of heroin mixed with either fentanyl and/or carfentanil. Fentanyl is 40 times more potent than heroin and carfentanil is 100 times more potent than fentanyl," say the OPP. "There is no way for users to know exactly what substances are in illicit drugs.

Carfentanil is so dangerous that quantities as small as a grain of sand could be lethal.

Samples from the same batch of drugs could differ in content enough that one user survives and another does not. These potent opioids are also being added to other seemingly benign drugs such as cannabis."

BY THE NUMBERS: 2019 OTTAWA VALLEY FLOOD UPDATE SHERRY HAAIMA sherr y.haaima@ metroland.com Renfrew County hosted a technical briefing in Pembroke this morning (May 3) regarding the recent floods and states of emergency declared in the county and seven lowertier municipalities, including Whitewater Region, Horton, McNab/Braeside and Greater Madawaska.

Officials provided a breakdown of the situation. Some of the numbers are: • The county has been experiencing severe flooding for 2 weeks.

• 570 permanent and 392 seasonal homes have been impacted, with 100 residents displaced.

• In Horton Township, 46 permanent and 57 seasonal homes have been im-

pacted with 16 residents displaced.

• In McNab/Braeside, 65 permanent homes and 75 seasonal affected.

• In Whitewater Region, 150 permanent and 150 seasonal have been impacted with 55 residents displaced.

• 347 soldiers from three Garrison Petawawa units have been deployed.

• 1.35 million sandbags have been filled and distributed.

• Paramedics have conducted more than 800 wellness checks and travelled 15,000 kilometres.

• More than 1,600 kilometres of shoreline has been impacted.

• Hundreds of roads remain closed.

"We know that the situation is not over yet - this is a marathon, ladies and gentleman, not a sprint," said

Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy. "We are expecting waters along the Ottawa River watershed to rise again as waters from the northern tributaries start to descend and we need to be steadfast in our resolve and continue to be Renfrew County Strong."

Murphy said a public town hall meeting, in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, will be held in the coming days. The county will continue to monitor the situation and remain engaged and ready to assist, she said.

RENFREW EYES LAND SALES AS WAY TO GENERATE REVENUE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com As well as finding efficiencies by sharing services with its closest neighbours, Renfrew is looking inward for ways to deal with the new fiscal reality expected to be facing municipal governments starting next year.

In a report received by council April 23, Reeve Peter Emon suggested the town consider selling "surplus" property to raise money to help finance economic development and "asset renewal."

His memo originally sent to council's economic development committee included recommendations to sell park land along the back end of MaTe-Way, as well as municipal property in the O'Brien-Mask road and other areas to raise funds for in-

frastructure. The document is "meant to initiate discussion" and be a "guide to exploring options," Emon said, noting it can be modified as council sees fit.

Committee members agreed it is worth discussing the marketing of land surplus to the town "in an orderly fashion" as long as "proper value" is received.

The proceeds would be reinvested to economic development projects, infrastructure renewal and improvements to Ma-Te-Way. The town's newly permanent economic development officer and a 'working group' made up of senior staff and chaired by a councillor would oversee any sales, which would need final approval from council.

Emon pointed out the plan follows up on the town's installation of ser-

vices along O'Brien Road in 2016 that successfully led to a series of land sales and new buildings in the area. Money from the O'Brien-Froats-Mask developments could be used to fund infrastructure to service the new proposals, he said.

Emon suggested the working group focus on three project areas: the O'Brien-Mask road parcel in 2019-20, the Ma-Te-WayOpeongo lands sometime before 2025 and other residential sites starting in earnest next year.

The question of establishing residential lots along Opeongo Road on Ma-Te-Way land would be examined, complete with recommendations regarding lot size, servicing and lay-out.

The working group would weigh the benefits of servicing the area with sewer lines ver-

sus requiring individual septic systems.

A street linking Opeongo Road to Ma-te-Way facilities would be sited with an eye to maximizing future development in the area both inside and outside the town. The new neighbourhood would also have active transportation options.

A similar plan would be undertaken for the O'Brien-Mask properties, with parcels sketched out for sale.

Emon said the area should include a direct entrance to the Algonquin Trail (former CP Rail line) from parking lots. That should be done as "quickly as possible," he said, noting the trail will be completed between Renfrew and Arnprior this year.

The parking lots could then be advertised as a trail head to the many user

groups, he said, noting studies show the trail has the potential to inject millions of dollars into the local economy.

As for the third project, the working group would be tasked with examining all other town-owned properties with residential potential, including a review of a 2013 study on the issue. It would then recommend land fit for sale and outline other properties that require a work plan before ready to be put on the market.

Money raised in sales in all three projects would be deposited in a Building Renfrew 2025 fund.

Among other items raised in the discussion paper were that the town would involve developers, consultants and real estate companies in the initiative and any new streets would be subject of public naming contests.

The economic development committee has also discussed the important of finding cost-savings and increasing revenues through talks with other municipalities. Such internal and external changes will likely be needed as municipalities fight for "survival" in the face of the province's multi-pronged attack on the deficit.

If the province is expecting more money from municipalities yet giving us less say ... that's unacceptable," said Admaston/ Bromley Mayor Michael Donohue. "There's no question it would substantially change the funding arrangement if we were expected to continue to provide critical services," he added.

Petawawa Mayor Bob Sweet expressed concern the moves "could put us in a very serious situation" if property taxpayers are expected to pay for services now funded by the province through income and other taxes. Calling the health unit and ambulance restructurings "the tip of 5an iceberg of a bigger problem," he said it could mean a difficult choice between reversing local gains in health care and raising taxes.

The province's proposed restructuring of Ontario's health units and slashing of their budgets isn't sitting well with Renfrew County council.

Councillors voted at their April 24 meeting to ask the provincial government to stop legislation reducing public health units from 35 to 10 and instead initiate consultations with municipalities and public health agencies before implementing any changes.

"It's a really scary Act," said Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon. "It'll have significant financial implications on the municipal sector for years to come."

County council also authorized the warden to write a letter to the premier and health minister urging them to eliminate the planned $200-million reduction in public health

budgets in the 2021-22 fiscal year and maintain the current 75 (provincial) to 25 (municipal) funding split.

The county's health committee chair Janice Visneskie-Moore, who participated in an 'emergency' phone conference with other public health officials just prior to the county council meeting, reported there are fears the province will shift more costs onto municipalities. Even a move to 70-30 would be "huge" for municipal property taxpayers, she said, noting it would affect every health unit in Ontario.

Emon suggested the restructuring would not only cost rural ratepayers more but give them less say in the service. It's not likely many rural representatives would be named to the decision-making boards, he said, noting the hydro board has all urban

The 13-year-old, an avid hockey player with the Kanata Rangers, needs a lifesaving stem cell transplant.

"Julia was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) and is currently in need of a stem cell transplant," says a Canadian Blood Services press release. "Julia's sister has been tested and is not a match so she is relying on people like you to join the stem cell registry. You may be a match for Julia or one of the 700 Canadian patients waiting to find a match."

Julia's parents, Mark and Carla Miller, grew up in Renfrew. Julia's grandfather, Morris Cybulski, shared her

ongoing struggle with the diagnosis.

"Since March of 2018, she has had 94 chemo sessions, 60 transfusions and multiple biopsies, so she's been through a lot already," he said.

Renfrew and area residents have an opportunity to get swabbed and join the registry at an event on Wednesday, May 15 at the Renfrew Legion, 2-6 p.m. Individuals must be 17-35 years of age to register. Cybulski said that anyone who is even a vague match would continue on with blood tests.

"It's all about finding the best match for Julia, so that she can have the best chance when the time comes," he said.

Flood waters that prompted state of emergency declarations in Renfrew County and seven lower-tier municipalities are slowly subsiding and while it's given affected residents a chance to catch their collective breath there's plenty of work to be done in the coming weeks and months.

Horton, McNab/Braeside and Whitewater Region residents in particular have been dealing with the effects of rising waters over the past several weeks.

If you have experienced floods on your properties, please keep in mind some safety precautions for drinking water.

The Renfrew County District Health Unit (RCDHU) offers some advice.

Flood water and water ponding around wells and septic systems can have adverse effects on the safety of your drinking water and how your septic system works.

Residents whose wells are directly affected by these conditions should boil their water for one minute at a rolling boil before drinking the water. Have your well water tested for bacteria.

If your septic system has been affected, limit water usage by taking quick showers rather than baths, avoid using the dishwasher, garbage disposal and washing machine and flush your toilets only when necessary. Ensure your basement sump pump is not going into the septic system.

Do not pump out your septic tank when the soil around the tank or the leaching bed is still saturated with water. High ground water levels may cause an empty septic tank to float and break out of the ground, and damage the tank and connecting plumbing.

• Keep your family safe by keeping family members and pets away from and out of the flood water; • DO NOT enter areas where electrical systems have been affected by flood water as you may be electrocuted; • Building materials, clothing and furniture exposed to flood waters are likely contaminated with sewage and can support the growth of mould; • Ask for professional advice during clean up.

Horton Township is hosting a Wellness Centre for Flood Victims to bring all partners together under one roof for the residents who have been affected by the flood, to have access to and the opportunity to ask questions and bring any concerns forward. Participating organizations include Renfrew County Social Services, Red Cross, RCDHU, Hydro One, Electrical Safety Authority, Horton Fire Department, County of Renfrew Paramedic Services and Horton Township staff. The centre was scheduled to be open at the Horton Community Centre May 8, 2-8 p.m.; May 9, 2-8 p.m.; and May 11, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Red Cross is supporting relief operations in the area and has launched an appeal for people impacted by the flooding. Anyone who has registered with the Red Cross, either online or by phone, and is eligible for aid, will receive $600 as early as next week to help them with their flood-related expenses that are not covered by insurance or other government programs.

To my surprise, it changed to agreement when you described the incredible community support of the effort to mitigate flood damage. I should have not let my guard down as you then went on to call me a "denier." Using the term "denier" is an attempt to stop debate, and shut people up.

I do not accept your premise that the flooding proves catastrophic climate change is upon us.

Perhaps you have already forgotten the incredibly cold winter we just had, with record snowfalls in February. An inconvenient fact is that according to your false prophets, snow was to be just a memory now, something to tell your grandchildren about. Oh, silly me, I forgot heat, cold, storms, lack of storms, droughts, floods, rain or any other weather event in

the history of the world proves global warming.

What is needed is an honest, respectful debate.

We should be concentrating on real air pollution, clean water, and replacing landfills by incinerating our garbage. But no, let's cripple our economy in a futile gesture to reduce our 1.6 per cent of worldwide emissions, so we can feel good for two weeks, until the Chinese replace them.

Because animals evolved in oceans, salt is an essential part of their body chemistry. To be more precise, it is sodium that is needed for proper ionic balance internally. In mammals, sodium is comprises about 0.1 per cent of their live weight.

Thus, large herbivores like moose require a lot of sodium. These giants can weigh up to 1,200 pounds locally (Moose in Alaska top the scales at 1,800 pounds!), and devour up to fifty pounds of plant material every day. In winter, balsam fir twigs and needles are

eaten, as well as twigs of willows and other deciduous shrubs. In summer, fresh leaves form much of their diet. However, all of those items, especially winter foods, contain very little sodium. So where then do moose attain enough of that mineral to maintain healthy bodies?

The answer lies in the water. In early summer moose head to beaver ponds and shallow lake edges to devour the floating leaves and underwater stems of waterlilies and watershield. The tissues of aquatic plants contain 400 to 500 times more sodium than those of terrestrial plants, so moose gorge themselves on water plants for many hours, day after day. But water plants aren't avail-

able for much of the year, so what do moose do during sodium-free months?

Remarkably, they store sodium in the first part of their stomach, the rumen, and draw upon those reserves through the rest of the year. Just like cattle, moose need help digesting the cellulose-toughened tissues of plants. That help comes from bacteria and other microorganisms that live in their rumen. These tiny symbionts digest the plant material that, before being swallowed, is first ground up by the moose's powerful cheek teeth. But plant tissues are stingy when it comes to giving up nutrients and since moose must extract as much nutrition as they can from every meal, they cough up the partly digested food and chew their cud to further physically break down the plant tissues. Aquatic plants are currently not available but moose in northern areas have found another source of sodium. The salt that melts winter snow from highways is sodium chloride, and right now roadside ditches are full of it.

That is why if you drive through Algonquin Park or northern Ontario right now, you'll likely encounter moose in ditches drinking water and eating mud.

Moose may be easy to see right now but they're not at their photogenic best for they are shedding their plush winter coat. Hair loss is particularly evident around their shoulders, es-

pecially if they have been biting or rubbing these areas to rid themselves of winter ticks.

It seems remarkable that microscopic organisms are necessary for a giant animal's survival, but it is not a one-way relationship. The microorganisms living in a moose's stomach get their food delivered to them in a warm, safe environment.

In other words, for helping moose digest their food, they get "free rumen board!"

COURT CASE TO RESUME IN FATAL CAR CRASH OF TEENS

Extensive sandbagging efforts took place in Horton Township with the recent floods. Residents, students and volunteers gathered at at the Sand Dome in Horton to help fill sandbags. Those present to assist with these efforts included Horton residents, students from St. Joseph's Catholic High School in Renfrew, members of Community Living, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, MNR workers and other volunteers. The criminal case against a Calabogie bar server will resume on May 22 at the Renfrew courthouse.

Ann Senack's lawyer appeared in court May 1 asking for more time to examine hard drives sent four days beforehand. Senack faces two counts of causing death by criminal negligence, and two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

The maximum penalty on one count is 10 years' imprisonment.

After leaving the nowclosed Shooters Bar and Grill on Oct. 27, 2017, two

teenaged Renfrew boys were killed and two more injured when their car crashed into rocks alongside Calabogie Road near Burnstown.

OPP say alcohol was a factor.

A gofundme campaign to cover Senack's legal expenses raised more than $53,000 from 442 people over the last 30 days or so.

The campaign descriptor calls her a "very valued resident who has contributed to the success of many causes throughout the years," and goes on to say "she has driven countless customers home, cut off many who needed it and yes checked ID for thousands."

MILEY'S CAFÉ OPEN FOR BUSINESS IN RENFREW JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com Renfrew residents who want a taste of homemade delights can check out Miley's Café and Unique Creations on Raglan Street, right next to the Bank of Montreal.

Miley's recently celebrated its grand opening on April 27, but the business has been open since Jan. 1.

Ellen Lucas, the owner of Miley's Café, explained how the place came to be.

"Both Sherry O'Malley and I were in the unique market up the street and we wanted to go out on our own," Lucas said. "This place became available, so we came in as partners, with Sherry running Unique Creations and me running the café."

Lucas described the atmosphere as friendly, designed to make visitors feel at home, saying they usually joke and have fun in the establishment.

The café is named after Miley

the Therapy Dog, who attended many community events in Renfrew. Miley passed away in December 2016.

O'Malley has been running Unique Creations since 2015, and says she enjoys creating things and fulfilling orders for customers.

"The smile on their face when they see an old picture printed on a mug or a t-shirt is the main reason why I'm in this business," O'Malley said.

The café has a breakfast special from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturdays and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sundays for only $3.50. The special includes two eggs, a choice of bacon, ham or sausage, home fries or a hashbrown, a fruit cup, toast and coffee. They also serve a breakfast poutine served with gravy or Hollandaise sauce.

Miley's also has an assortment of poutines made with fresh-cut fries, with varieties including regular, roadkill (bacon and onion), western (ham and onion), the

caps, milkshakes, ice cream cones and pop.

Unique Creations mainly sells custom t-shirts and mugs, but also has aprons, wind chimes and other items in stock.

Also for sale at the location are Betty Joe Diamond Designs, which mainly sells diamond art.

Lucas is hopeful this business will flourish in the near future.

"Sherry and I hope that this will be a thriving little shop in the years to come, which looks likely since we're noticing new faces every day," Lucas said.

5 QUESTIONS FOR THE NEW MISS TEEN ONTARIO EAST JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com The Renfrew Recreation Centre was filled with excitement and emotion on May 5 for the 13th annual Miss Teen Ontario East (TOE) Pageant.

The pageant is a charity-based, notfor-profit organization comprised of a group of volunteer directors with the mission to bring awareness and raise funds for childhood cancer.

The event had 17 young women competing for the coveted crown and various awards.

At the end of the night, Horton’s Meadow Congdon was crowned 2019 Miss Teen Ontario East.

The Mercury spoke with the Renfrew Collegiate Institute student about her victory and her future.

Renfrew Mercury: How are you feeling right at this moment?

Meadow Congdon: I am so honoured to take on the title! This will be a great opportunity to raise awareness for the cause.

RM: What prompted you to sign up for the pageant?

MC: One of my best friends mentioned it, saying it was a great idea and that it would build up my confidence.

Right now I am very happy with that

decision.

RM: What do you hope to accomplish in the next year?

MC: I hope to spread as much awareness as I can and make loud statements.

RM: What advice would you give others your age?

MC: Never give up and always be confident. If you can do both of those you can accomplish amazing things.

RM: Where do you see yourself in five years?

A: I see myself going to school to become a therapist so that I can help benefit and change people’s lives.

ST. JOE'S SET TO LAUNCH 'LIFE AND DEATH OF ALMOST EVERYBODY' MAY 8-11 JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com It's that time of year again!

St Joseph's Catholic High School is proud to present this year's play, "The Life and Death of Almost Everybody" by David Campton.

In the play, the Sweeper, tidying up an empty stage, is tempted to experiment with the magic power of the theatre - to create life through the exercise of imagination.

After a few attempts in summoning up a jungle and a rabbit, the Sweeper plunges ahead and creates a Young Man and a Young Woman.

When more characters are called for, events begin to unravel and his creations turn against him.

The play challenges viewers to look within to find the good that is present and to resist the many temptations that threaten to lead them astray.

Directed by Annice O'Rourke, the play will be held at St. Joe's. It opens on May 8 at 7 p.m. and will run until May 11.

Tickets are available at Aikenheads and the SJHS office at $10 for adults an $8 for seniors.

CHURCH, TOWN FAIL TO FIND COMMON GROUND JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com The Town of Renfrew has failed to come to an agreement with the Renfrew Presbyterian Church on two issues.

Council was told April 23 that the church has refused to grant the town an easement for a path linking the Coleraine subdivision to Stewart Park. The town is looking to give people in that area walking access to the downtown.

The town and church have also failed to come to an agreement on sharing the costs of paving the parking lot so it could serve both churchgoers and users of Stewart Park. The town's development and works committee has informed the church it is unable to assist "at this time" with the request to subsidize the cost of paving the church parking lot.

Committee chair Mike Coulas said the church board considers the trail issue closed.

He assured council the town and public still have access to Stewart Park and Smiths Creek. It's possible the town could utilize its own property to complete the trail, he said.

The forested path from the Coleraine subdivision to Stewart Park also needs a small bridge to become fully accessible.

Coun. Sandi Heins, who stressed the two issues were not related, said it's not the first time the church has unsuccessfully asked the town to help with the parking lot. She noted a liability issue played a role at one point in the breakdown in previous discussions.

PROPOSED SUBDIVISION TO WAIT ON SEWER WORK JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com A new subdivision has been proposed for Renfrew, but sewage and drainage problems may delay its start, at least until the stalled Stewart Street reconstruction is complete.

Renfrew council was told at its April 23 meeting the proposed housing development would be west of Aberdeen Street. "Our main concern is sewage and wastewater capacity," reported development and works director Mike Coulas.

He explained the sewer main down Baldwin Street isn't big enough to handle 30 to 70 new homes. Adding to the problem is that several older homes on Baldwin have weeping drainage tiles that tie into the pipe. There is already a bottleneck problem with the current flows, he said.

Coulas said the town is planning to upgrade the service in conjunction with the Stewart Street reconstruction project. However, that is on hold as the province hasn't provided any connecting link funding this year.

It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to our wonderful father Reg who died peacefully on May 4, 2019, surrounded by family, at the Ottawa General Hospital of causes related to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Reg will be sadly missed by his Newmarket family, Shelley, Jamie, Celeste and Harrison; his Edmonton family, Sherrey, Rob, Joshua, Emily, Ben and Cassie; and by his brothers, Ron and Gary (Carol); as well as his many nieces and nephews. Reg was predeceased by his wife, Patricia (nee Butts) who died of multiple myeloma; also predeceased by his brother Wayne (Patricia). Reg grew up in the Ottawa Valley. As a young man he enlisted in the military where he worked his way through the ranks to Engineering Officer and Fire Chief.

Reg was a caring and considerate manager earning the respect and friendship of his senior officers and his crews. After a distinguished career in the military, where he was awarded the Queen’ Golden Jubilee Medal of Honor, Reg joined the Commissionaires where upon retirement he received the Canadian Exemplary Services medal. Reg’s love for his family was abundant. He always had time for a water fight, water skiing, coaching, and fun with his family. Dad was a proud grandfather and number one fan spending time in cold rinks, cramped dance recitals, concerts, sporting events and playing board games. Dad was the go to confident for the kids, a mentor and source of endless love.

He was a loving husband, caring for mom through her battle with cancer. He never missed a birthday, loved to celebrate the holidays and was always there for us when we needed a boost. He was a strong presence and an amazing caregiver to all who had the honour to know him. Mom and Dad will always be in our hearts, and the memories of our family will be treasured forever We are immensely proud of the man that he was and grateful for the life that we shared. Reg’s family will receive friends at McPhail & Perkins Funeral Home, 85 Munro Ave. E., Renfrew on Friday, May 10 from 5:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at Hilltop Tabernacle, Griffith on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment to follow at Matawatchan Cemetery.

Jean Marie Enright (nee Macdonald), born May 21, 1937; died May 1, 2019. Jean is survived by her husband of 58 years, Terry Enright; her son Paul (Tracey); siblings Cyril Macdonald (Constance), Anna Tremblay (Carl), Roderick Macdonald (Angelita); in-laws Cyril Enright (Loretta), Bill Crogie, Barbara Frazer (Bill), Brian Enright, and Eileen Nolan and her much loved nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her sister-in-law Catherine Crogie. Jean was a born teacher, helping with her younger siblings, teaching school, then helping other teachers. In retirement, she volunteered at the local school helping children learn to read and was a contributing member of CWL. In her acceptance of Alzheimer’s Disease diagnosis, even in her dying, she continued to teach, showing us how to live life and pass into new life with grace and truth. Jean will be remembered for her gentle guidance, her readiness to give of herself, her desire to keep the peace. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Church, Douglas, Ontario, Tuesday May 7th at 11 a.m. followed by cremation. In memory of Jean, donations to the Dementia Society of Ottawa/Renfrew or Renfrew Victoria Hospital would be appreciated.

SCHOOL, OPP SUPPORT SPECIAL OLYMPICS FLOOR HOCKEY JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com It was a day of friendly competition and good sportsmanship when Renfrew Collegiate Institute hosted the Special Olympics school championship floor hockey qualifier in early March.

Two teams from RCI coached by Jane Wheeler and Scott Buffam and a visiting squad from Barry's Bay participated in the tournament. A group of student volunteers dressed in bright yellow Law Enforcement Torch Run 'Proud Partners' T-shirts helped officiate the tournament in the RCI main gymnasium.

The OPP, who have chosen Special Olympics as their charity of choice, were represented by Const.

Tina Hunt, Const. Jeff Cassidy and auxiliary members Brian Sharpe and John Freymond.

The annual OPP Torch Run in support of Special Olympics through Renfrew and Arnprior will be held in early June.

Renfrew Collegiate Institute students, staff and other volunteers were present to help raise money for Relay for Life during the Community Awareness Day on May 4.

Held in conjunction with the Great Downtown Garage Sale, Renfrew's Low Square consisted of a car wash, bake sale and children's games.

It was revealed in a letter to Renfrew council that this will be the final year of Relay for Life. RCI has raised over $985,000 for the cause, and is reputed to be the most that any school has raised since Relay for Life began almost 20 years ago.

Upcoming events include the Bonnie Kerr Carnival at Ma-Te-Way on May 10, followed by the relay itself on May 31.

BAD MARGUERITE'S SPRING GIFT TO TEACHER BACKFIRES FLOWERS HAD MISS CROSBY SNEEZING LOUDLY, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

Bad Marguerite was at it again, always trying to get on the good side of Miss Crosby.

Often her actions didn't work out though. There was the time my brother Emerson stole the homemade doughnut she brought the teacher. Marguerite made the mistake of leaving it on her own desk at morning recess, meaning to give it to Miss Crosby when we were having our lunch. Everyone could see her, and that's what Marguerite liked ... lots of attention. Well, when Emerson was walk-

ing past Marguerite's desk, he crammed the whole thing into his mouth, and it was gone before he reached the back door!

Of course, he did it so sneakily Marguerite didn't know who to blame, but she blamed Rocky, who was known to latch onto things that didn't belong to him. But Rocky had no idea what she was talking about.

Well, here she was again. On a sunny and warm early spring day in May, she arrived at school just before Miss Crosby appeared on the step to ring the big brass bell. Marguerite had in her hand something wrapped in wax paper, and she had no intention of telling us what it was, but when we went into

Just before we took our seats, Marguerite jabbed her finger in the general direction of the parcel, and the teacher had no choice but to unwrap it. It was a bunch of daffodils and what looked like weeds to me, and some green leaves.

Then the fun began.

Miss Crosby threw back her head and let go with a sneeze that could be heard over in Admaston! Several more loud sneezes followed, and Miss Crosby quickly moved over to the window where the pencil sharpener was anchored, threw open a window, and set right in to morning prayers and the Bible reading, wiping her nose at the same time never going

My sister Audrey in Senior Fourth said recess went an extra 10 minutes, which suited me just fine.

When we went back into school, there was no sign of the flowers. But we could sure smell Lifebuoy soap!

And over in the corner where the big green tin waste paper basket stood, we saw what was left of Marguerite's gift to Miss Crosby. You didn't have to be a university graduate to know what was sticking out of the basket. It was a big parcel thickly wrapped in many pages of the Renfrew Mercury, well away from Miss Crosby's nose!

Bad Marguerite, for once, had the common sense not to ask the teacher what happened to her flowers. It was a long time be-

fore she brought anything else to the teacher!

In conjunction with the Roadeo, a trade show is planned for both days to display the equipment and services provided to public works departments by several local suppliers.

JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com The Renfrew County Road Supervisors Association (RCRSA) has announced that they have been selected to host the 2019 annual Association of Ontario Road Supervisors (AORS) Provincial Safety Truck Roadeo on Sept. 10 and 11.

Steven Boland, a certified engineering technologist for the RCRSA, was present at the Renfrew council meeting on April 9 to introduce this year's event.

The competition will include identification of truck safety defects, a pre-trip inspection and a field obstacle course, where competitors will drive a truck equipped with a snow plow and wing.

"Good drivers are key," Boland said. "They need to be able to drive safely and avoid damage to any infrastructure."

Boland concluded his presentation by saying he wasn't asking for money, but support for public works and municipal staff to be granted permission to attend, officiate and participate in the Roadeo on both days.

Councillor Peter Emon commented by saying the Roadeo was a great event and that it attracts may people from across the province. Mike Asselin, the director of development and works, said this event is a great way to promote safe work in the profession.

The RCRSA Local Safety Truck Roadeo is scheduled for Sept. 10 at the Laurentian Valley Public Works Depot, while the AORS Provincial Roadeo will be held on Sept.

AORS is a provincial professional association comprised of 32 local associations with over 2,000 members. They provide high quality public services through education, certification, networking and other events including the 'Roadeo'.
