RCI relay fundraiser Hannah Knight-Locke “accidently” hoses down friends Mikayla Perry and Meagan Gilchrist who were just trying to raise funds for cancer research by washing vehicle after vehicle on May 7. On Friday, May 13 the 15th annual Bonnie Kerr Memorial Cure for Cancer Carnival will take place at Ma-te-way from 4 to 8 p.m. The carnival features six inflatable games, huge carnival food canteen, games of chance and fun for the entire family. Proceeds are divided between the I Choose RVH Campaign and RCI Relay for Life.

A Renfrew native is among those fleeing the fires in Alberta. It’s a story playing out for thousands of Albertans as the wildfires that forced the evacuation of Fort McMurray and its outer regions continue to rage, destroying forests and homes and wreaking havoc across the province. Robert Woolsey and his family are now safely tucked into his father’s place in Barrhead, Alta., more than a four-hour drive from Fort McMurray, but it took some time to get there. Woolsey, 33, grew up in Renfrew and his mom Connie and sister Amanda still live in this area. This August will mark eight years since Woolsey left Renfrew

and headed to Alberta for work. He’s now a heavy equipment operator at Suncor Energy. He and Nicole Dautant and their children, six-month-old LeahLynn, their baby together and fourand-a-half-year-old Nicholas, who Dautant had when the couple got together, have, like many Albertans, had a very harrowing week. The ordeal began on Tuesday, May 3. “I was at work working day shift. We had been listening to the radio and heard about the different parts of Fort Mac getting evacuated,” said Woolsey. “I was talking to Nicole throughout the day. She was getting scared and starting to pack stuff up – suitcases with a few changes of clothes and a cooler with drinks.” See RENFREW page 2

It’s warm, welcoming and accessible. That’s how staff and the community are sure to feel when they walk into the new

Family and Children’s Services of Renfrew County (FCS) building at 114 Argyle St. South. The building was officially opened and celebrated on May 6. Staff started to move in last October after three years of planning.

Although final numbers are not in yet the project is within its $1 million budget to revitalize the old LCBO building. During the planning, the committee’s key goals were encompassed by the word ‘Awesome,’ which stood for accessible, warm/welcoming, en-

vironmentally friendly, safe/secure, open, modernized and engaging. The new facility is described as a state-of-the-art building that will help serve clients in Renfrew County throughout the 21st century. See NEW FCS BUILDING page 3

Robert and Nicole Dautant, and their children, fled the forest fire that engulfed parts of Fort McMurray. “That really surprised me - the amount of support from other people outside of Alberta but also each other. The people from Fort McMurray offering their stuff and they don’t have much,” he said. On the trip to Barrhead, there was a barrage of vehicles and individuals with water, gas and other supplies for evacuees. When they made a stop at Wandering River, a man, upon seeing Dautant and the kids, handed over water, snacks and even diapers. And when they finally arrived in Barrhead – they could finally relax a bit. “I’m still in shock, but

it was a sigh of relief,” said Woolsey. “We’d finally made it to absolute safety.” And now, a waiting game. The couple have been glued to news stations and social media. They don’t know yet whether their house is still standing. “Some of what we’ve heard is it could be a few weeks before we’re allowed back – to check to see if we have anything left,” said Woolsey. The Canadian Red Cross has set up an emergency ‘Alberta Fires’ appeal, visit redcross.ca. You can also text REDCROSS to 30333 to make a $5 donation.

Timberlea, where Woolsey lives, was among the last areas to be evacuated. When the couple decided it was time to get out, their evacuation order was still on a voluntary basis, but soon after the entire city was ordered to safer ground. Woolsey’s workplace is north of town, and Dautant packed up the kids, supplies and headed out to pick him up. “She was coming to meet me and we were hoping to evacuate south,” said Woolsey. “But when she left, the whole town was in gridlock. It was all at a standstill; people hadn’t moved in hours and were starting to panic.” They stayed in constant contact and when Dautant reported it was getting hard to breathe from all the smoke in the air, he advised her to do what was necessary. “I just told her to put the truck in fourwheel drive and get out of there,” he said. “She took walking trails, paths. She was scared, she had two small kids in the vehicle, she wanted to leave.” Dautant arrived at the Suncor parking lot, about 30 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, about 5 p.m. “The parking lot was full. There were families and kids and pets and everybody was kind of staging up,” said Woolsey. “At the time, we were still trying to figure out what was going on and what we were going to do. Nicole said when she first arrived at Suncor, there were other people arriving and just spilling out of their vehicles and laying on the ground and crying. People were losing their whole lives – everything.” And while the plan had to be to head south for safety, Highway 63, the only way in and out of Fort McMurray, was closed, so they had no choice but to stay the night The Woolseys were caught in traf- at Suncor’s camp, which was opened up to fic fleeing the wildfire as plums of accommodate the evacuees. The camp was full, said Woolsey, of worksmoke tower overhead.

ers, their families and pets. Woolsey and his family are appreciative of Suncor’s hospitality. “It was definitely a lot better than sleeping in a vehicle,” he said. “We went to camp, got our rooms. The kitchen was still open so we could get a bite to eat and there was running water and showers.” The shelter gave the couple and their kids an opportunity for a much-needed rest. “I was just exhausted and I was happy that we all got there for the night,” he said. “We could kind of take a moment to breathe. But we wanted to get out of there. When you evacuate north, there’s only so far you can go then it turns into more bush. We could have been trapped. That was still running through my head.” When they woke up and learned the highway had opened, they wasted no time in getting on the road, headed south. Conditions had changed, as well, making the whole experience that much more real. “When we got up and out into the halls of the camp, because of the way the wind had shifted, the smoke was really blowing our way. It was almost like a fog right inside the building,” said Woolsey. They packed up and hit the road, and although they weren’t supposed to, they decided to make a quick stop back at their house to grab a few items, including their passports, ID and photographs. It was at this time that Robert got his biggest shock. “Nicole was inside the house and I was at the truck loading stuff and I heard an explosion behind me,” he said. “I turned around and probably two streets away, there was a house that exploded. All of a sudden there were 80-100 foot flames shooting in the air.” The couple quickly left and headed to be with family in Barrhead. Throughout the whole ordeal, it’s the generosity of people that has touched Woolsey.

New FCS building features added programs

TIFFANY LEPACK/ METROLAND

Renfrew Mayor Don Eady, Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon, Sue McCrae, board chair, Arijana Haramincic executive director, and Debbie and Fred Gauthier take part in the official ribbon cutting for the new Family and Children’s Services of Renfrew County building at 114 Argyle St. South on May 6.

Continued from page 1

The new building features enhanced programs through facilities such as a new teaching kitchen, access rooms and a children’s play area. Executive director Arijana Haramincics says this was the perfect opportunity to create a leading-edge facility for the agency. “This new facility is 100 per cent accessible for both staff and our clients, and our staff and board have been able to create a space that is idea for the various programs our agency provides,” said Haramincics. She said the building is what the staff wanted and will be a great benefit to the community. Dave Henderson, the development co-ordinator at FCS, was the master of ceremonies during the event and called it a great celebration. “The staff here care deeply and passionately about the children and families they serve,” said Henderson. “Our agency is dedicated to helping children and families.” Debbie and Fred Gauthier, along with Angela Duchene who works at FCS and is also with the Anishaanabe Culture Circle, gave an Algonquin blessing and performed a traditional smudge ceremony. Debbie called the building a dream come true for the children and asked for guidance and strength for those working in the building. Sue McCrae, board chair, thanked everyone for being there and for the support. “This first came to the board three years ago and now we are standing here in front of a state-of-the-art building that will help us to continue to serve the community,” said McCrae. Mayor Don Eady congratulated all involved for the new building. “It’s a great addition to Renfrew and you can really see how well it will serve the community,” said Eady. Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon, who had worked at the previous location on Martin Street, said he is very impressed with the new building. “It is a beautiful facility that will serve the community for a number of years,” said Emon. “It’s larger and better than the last building.” Emon remembered the former building had intrusive cameras in the interview rooms, now they are out of the way. “The building promotes caring and healing and to do that it has to be unobtrusive, the recording equipment doesn’t need to be right in your face,” he said. Fundraising Machu Picchu Trek experience of a lifetime for Freemark family Sherry Haaima

sherry.haaima@metroland.com

“This is an experience of a lifetime.” Sarah Freemark, CTV Morning Live host and Majic 100 announcer, is nervous and excited about her upcoming Machu Picchu Trek. And not only is it a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the Renfrew native, she’s thrilled to be sharing the experience with her father, Tim, and raising money for a great cause - SOS Children’s Villages. The Freemarks are members of the Machu Picchu Dream Team 2016, the excursion that’s being rolled out this year as part of Dream Mountains, an initiative created by Shawn Dawson, who decided to combine his dream of summiting the highest peak on each of the seven continents with supporting seven organizations that are dedicated to giving a hand up. From May 21-31, Dawson will lead the sixth annual Dream Team, a group of 21 people, to hike through the Andes along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. Freemark, whose CTV colleagues have participated in past Dream Mountains trips, said she had been asked to participate in the initiative the past couple of years but her schedule didn’t allow for it. She was quick to jump on board this time around. “Machu Picchu is apparently one of the less difficult hikes. There’s a warmer climate and great food,” she said. When the team leader asked if she knew anyone who would make a good addition to the team, she immediately thought of her father Tim. The Freemark family is close, so he was a natural choice. But there was another reason. “When my father graduated from geology at Queen’s University, he went to Peru for his first job,” said Sarah. “So I thought he would be a great fit.” The climb will be a totally new experience for Sarah, who has been joining her dad for regular training sessions on the stairs at the 34-floor Minto building in Ottawa. Tim shares in Sarah’s excitement about the upcoming expedition to Peru, which he describes as “a really neat country.” He’s been working to prepare himself for the strain of the journey. “Every week we’re going to Gatineau Park at Meech Lake,” he said. It’s one thing for his daughter, who has the benefit of youth on her side, to be making the trip, said Tim, but he’s got the added pressure of age. Altitude sickness - caused by ascent to a high altitude and the resulting shortage of oxygen - can cause hyperventilation, nausea, exhaustion, and cerebral edema, and is a very real possibility for Dream Mountains hikers. “You can be in top physical shape,” he said. “And it’s like the worst hangover in the world. I’m going to try to avoid that.” Sarah’s been joining her dad on the stair climbs, as well as doing another weekly session on her own. “The need to do the stairs is definitely important,” she said. “You need to get used to moving your legs and using these muscles you typically don’t use. The Inca Trail has lots of steps.” She’s excited to meet and get to know her teammates, 21 different climbers of varying ages and skill levels. Seven different charities will benefit from the upcoming trek. The Freemarks, along with another of their fellow climbers, are pleased to be supporting SOS Children’s Villages. And they’ll have a chance to see just how their efforts will help. 4 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, May 12, 2016

On May 13 there will be a dance in Renfrew to benefit SOS Children’s Villages. Tim and Sarah Freemark are helping raise funds. “There’s a chance for us to actually visit one of the villages that’s supported by SOS,” said Sarah. SOS Children’s Villages provides homes for children who have been abandoned or orphaned, she explained. The charity provides homes for the families and the children, who are matched with an SOS mother who will dedicate her life to caring for the child. What’s got her nervous about the upcoming trip? “Primarily, I have no idea how altitude is going to hit me and my father,” said Sarah. Sarah’s colleague Lianne Lang, who participated in a recent Dream Mountains expedition, is in “peak physical condition,” and had issues. “She did everything you’re supposed to do and she was just wiped with altitude sickness,” said Sarah. “So I’m nervous about that for myself and my dad.” Secondly, raising the $5,000 expected of each climber is a daunting task. “There’s a lot of pressure to do that,” she said. “I don’t want to let them down.” There’s a lot of moving parts to organizing the excursion and a number of fundraising events, as well, said Sarah, which in addition to a career that keeps her pretty, has made life pretty hectic of late. The Freemarks are paying their own travel expenses, in addition to raising funds for SOS. They will host a fundraising dance on Friday, May 13, at the Renfrew Armouries, featuring the Riley New Band. A special feature of the night is the opening act, Landslide, of which Sarah’s cousin, Colin Prentice, is a member. This will give family members, including Sarah’s grandma, a chance to see the band perform live, a chance they’ve not yet had. The Freemarks are pleased with all the support they’ve had leading up to the trip, and for the dance in particular, including some pretty sweet silent auction prizes courtesy of the Ottawa Senators Foundation and the Ottawa RedBlacks. Dance tickets are $10 at the door. Donations can also be made online at www.dreammountains.com.

Delay causes Renfrew refugee family to stay at Jordan camp Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

A clerical error is not going to stop a determined group of local volunteers. The Renfrew Refugee Welcome Group (RRWG) has been working since last November to welcome a Syrian family to town. Sadly, due to some lost paperwork, the family’s arrival has been delayed. The RRWG is more than ready for the family. The government requires sponsors to have $34,000 for the family and they have raised more than $50,000. Plus, they have a house that is fully furnished, food, clothes and toys all ready for the family. Organizers are extremely thankful to the entire community for all the support of fundraising efforts. On May 9, three members of the RRWG met with the Renfrew Mercury and they confirmed the family has been delayed. The group submitted its application in February. At the end of March, for an unexplained reason, they found out it was lost. So they hustled to get a new application in. “We need to pressure the government because this is the worst humanitarian crisis since the Second World War and we want to help, we are ready to help,” said Felicite Stairs, RRWG secretary. They are planning to approach Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. “We want to see if she can lobby the government to

OPP weekly news

The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 204 calls for service during the previous week. Renfrew and Arnprior OPP officers responded to nine domestic disputes during the past week. One female was charged with assault. No other criminal offences occurred. BREAK AND ENTER

A vacant building on Gillan Road in Horton Township was broken into last week. Between Thursday May 5 and Saturday May 7 unknown persons damaged window and doors and gained entry into the building and attempted to burn the building. They were unsuccessful and left. Const. Tony Gardiner is investigating. THEFTS

Someone broke into a locked freezer outside Ricky’s Spuds in Renfrew. The business is located on Raglan St. S in the Giant Tiger parking lot. Sometime between Wednesday May 4 and Friday May 6 someone entered a locked freezer and stole a large quantity of cheese curds. Const. Patrick O’Connor is investigating. FRAUD

One person has lost $200 after responding to a fraudulent ad on a website for puppies for sale in Renfrew. The victim sent a $200 deposit to secure the purchase of the puppy using an e-transfer to the seller. When someone attended to pick up the dog at the address provided on Peter Street in Renfrew they discovered the scam. The investigation revealed the money was sent to a Canadian bank in western Canada. Making purchases using local classifieds websites can be successful but there are plenty of scammers out there. People are urged to meet the seller in person in a public place if possible. Pay with cash, never mail a cheque or wire money to the seller. Use common sense, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Remember buyer beware!!

expedite our application,” said Stairs. They have also approached the Ministry of Immigration and spoke with staff for Karen McCrimmon, the Member of Parliament for Kanata-Carleton. “We want to continue to try and explore other avenues,” said Stairs. “She (Karen) can help because she is in government.” They have also approached the NDP immigration critic. “We are multi-partisan,” said Stairs. “This isn’t just government

policy, this is a Canadian way to help in a humanitarian crisis,” said Kurt Johnson, a member of the RRWG. Johnson explained the government has slowed the process down because they met the 25,000 refugee goal. Peg Robertson, one of the volunteers who helped gather supplies for the family, admits it has been a tough time for the volunteers. “It’s frustrating, the group started in November and everyone was really excited. It grew so fast because so many people got on board,” said

Robertson. “We are determined and we are sure we will get our family.” Unfortunately, they are still unsure when the family of five, who are at a camp in Jordan, will arrive. “They are so ready to come here,” said Robertson. “We have established a friendship with them and we are anxious to fulfill their needs.” Stairs says their volunteers are ready and willing to help. “More importantly we have a family in Jordan, in a camp, who are afraid for their lives,” said Stairs.

“They could be here in Canada safe and secure in our community.” “Why can’t they be there,” added Johnson. “Because our application is stalled.” The RRWG is not the only group facing delays: Pembroke, Westmeath-Lapasse, Eganville (third family), and a second group in Renfrew – are all in the same situation. So far refugee families have arrived in Arnprior, Deep River and Perth. Mississippi Mills has welcomed two families and they are still waiting on two more.

Renfrew Printing celebrates 45th anniversary Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Local businesses celebrated a long-standing Raglan Street business on May 4. Renfrew Printing has been serving customers for 45 years; something the Renfrew Businesses Improvement Association (BIA) felt was worth recognizing. “They are amazing people,” said BIA treasurer Mel Blimke. “They deserve (the surprise), they are hardworking, gracious and nice folks.” BIA director Christina Ouellet said the owners always have your back when you’re in need. “Bill (McAdam) is so dedicated to the community, he’s been there for 45 years, that’s pretty impressive,” she said. A number of BIA members gathered at A Sense of Country and along with Mayor Don Eady they walked over and surprised store owner McAdam with flowers and balloons. Eady presented McAdam a certificate that said ‘Thank you for continuing to provide this community with excellent printing services and for all that you do for our community.’ During the presentation Eady said it’s a real accomplishment they have been there for 45 years. “This business has been an institution on main street,” said Eady. “I doubt there is a person here today who hasn’t shopped here.” McAdam was a little overwhelmed with the surprise and said he wasn’t expecting it. “I’m quite thankful for the people in the area who have supported us over the years,” said McAdam. McAdam, who was also a teacher when he opened the business, now has six employees, including his wife Deija and his daughter Colleen. The business was opened 10 days after Colleen was born. “I don’t know how he does it,” said Colleen. “He puts in 12 to 14 hour days!” McAdam said there has been a lot of changes since the business first opened. At the time it was done on an offset press, they were old photo copiers at the time. “There were no faxes and no emails,” said McAdam. “It was completely different.” The business is located at 172 Raglan St. South and now they offer a number of services, including printing, copying, faxing, email, laminating and binding. “There have been hundreds and hundreds of people who have used our service,” said McAdam. When asked if he had any pictures from his early days he said no

OPINION

Connected to your community

Learning from Fort McMurray Be prepared. That was the message shared by the area OPP detachments and fire departments last week during Canadian Emergency Preparedness Week (May 1-7). That message couldn’t have been driven home any more dramatically when a raging forest fire suddenly turned on the city of Fort McMurray and drove about 88,000 people from their homes. Some only had minutes in which to flee for their lives. The ordeal that even the best prepared and resourceful Fort McMurray citizens found themselves facing shows the importance of being ready to react when emergencies hit. Now, it’s not likely, given our different mix of forest, that a similar fire would threaten the towns of Arnprior or Renfrew. But it could, particularly given the more extreme weather that Mother Nature has served us up recently, do plenty of damage in the backwoods of such municipalities as McNab-Braeside, Greater Madawaska, Mississippi Mills, Horton and upper Adamston-Bromley. OTTAWA VALLEY’S GREAT FIRE

After all, it has happened in the past. Local historian Terry Currie’s book, ‘The Ottawa Valley’s Great Fire of 1870’, tells the terrifying tale of the fire that started near Pakenham and ravaged a wide area, forcing people to jump into the Ottawa River or take refuge in their wells. That fire was fueled by a forest and grasslands made tinder dry by months of drought and driven by fierce winds. By the time it died out, it had wiped out more than 3,000 homes, most of them farms, between Arnprior and the western section of Ottawa. The fire was caused when workers burn-

ing bush along the new rail line let it get away from them. It goes to show that when local fire departments impose burning bans they do so for good reason. And when they plead with people to be careful with campfires and cigarettes when out in the bush, it’s because the consequences of a momentary bout of carelessness can be devastating. LIKELY HUMAN CAUSED

The cause of the Fort McMurray fire may never be determined, but there is a good chance it was caused by human activity. So while we can all do our best to ensure man-made emergencies are kept to a minimum, there is always the chance that an act of negligence or an unavoidable disaster, such as an earthquake, tornado or flood, can trigger an emergency. And such catastrophes can occur out of the blue. That’s why it is vital the public take heed when firefighters and police officers urge them to be prepared to evacuate almost instantly and have enough emergency rations on hand to be able to survive on their own for at least 72 hours (and as Fort McMurray teaches us, keep your vehicles gassed up if you can). The rallying of people across the country in support of the Fort McMurray evacuees is indeed heart-warming. But for the first few hours of the emergency, many of that city’s residents had to rely on their own fortitude and foresight to ensure their survival. While hopefully Upper Ottawa Valley residents will never be tested in such a way, it is hoped we would show the same level of preparedness and survival smarts if disaster does strike.

8 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, May 12, 2016

Apologies after info clarified To the editor: Further to my letter of May 5 ‘More work needed on Millennium Trail,’ I owe an apology to the Renfrew parks and recreation department. Since then I have found out the town does not own the land on either side of the Millennium Trail, just the trail itself. The land on the creek side is an easement owned by Bell Canada. They will not do anything about the dead trees and brush. I guess we will have to wait until enough trees fall on the phone lines for them to break.

On the plus side, there has already been one or more garbage barrels put on the trail. Also the lights are going to be straightened and repaired in the next little while. Again, my apologies to the town and thank you for calling me so soon about the problem. At least I know the town is just as concerned as I and a number of other people are about the safety and beauty of our Millennium Trail. Robert E. Debeau Renfrew

Godspell hits the St. Joe’s stage May 17, 18, 20 and 21 Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

A special anniversary is bringing back a well-loved musical to Renfrew. St. Joseph’s Catholic High School is celebrating its tenth year putting on musicals and is going back to its first-ever production. Godspell will hit the stage on May 17, 18, 20 and 21 at 7 p.m.at the school. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased at the school or at Aikenhead’s Drug Store. Musical director Kevin McSheffrey thinks the school has a tradition of really good musicals. “Godspell was the first one we did and it was always our idea to revisit it,” said McSheffrey. A number of cast members from the original show also plan to attend the new one. “The calibre of singing and harmonies is really quite remarkable,” said McSheffrey. Director Jodi MacDonald says the cast is very talented. “Their singing is amazing and they are working so hard,” said MacDonald. “The first time I heard them singing I got goosebumps.”

The show is based on the Gospel of Matthew following the disciples

coming together with Jesus forming a community to the crucifixion.

“There is a range of emotions,” said MacDonald. “There is happi-

ness and deep sadness as well.” JP Cassanto, from the Braeside area, has been in four other shows at the school and this time he has the main role of Jesus. “It’s a 1970s musical but we have modernized it, it’s not the same. We have adapted it to a more modern audience,” said Cassanto. Levi Huyer from the Burnstown area is playing Judas and John the Baptist, he encourages people to come out to the show. “The music is really quite beautiful,” said Huyer. “People should come out because it’s a chance to see people having fun on stage.” He admits it has been a lot of hard work but he is enjoying the experience. Eunice Cassanto is in the ensemble and has really liked the chance to make new friends and doing something she loves. “We have put a lot of effort into it,” said Eunice. “It’s a good to be able to show that to everyone.” The cast is made up of grade 8 to 12 students with five students hailing from Arnprior and 10 from Renfrew. They started rehearsals in February and have been practising twice a week, at lunchtime and some time on the weekends.

GRAND ROUNDS RVH volunteers have heart At RVH we appreciate the contributions of our volunteers every day, and celebrate them each year during National Volunteer Week. This year, our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon took place on Tuesday, April 12. “This is an opportunity that we look forward to every year to say ‘thank you’ to each of you. There’s no doubt that we appreciate everything you do for RVH, and most importantly, for our patients and their families,” said Julia Boudreau, Vice President of Corporate Services, who brought greetings to the annual lunch on behalf of the hospital.

Approximately 350 volunteers help in many capacities, each of them equally important to the operation of the hospital— some work directly with patients and some work primarily in the community, some focus on fundraising and events, and others share their time and expertise on boards and committees. “Your efforts and dedication are remarkable and do not go unnoticed. Today is really our chance to say thank you in a small way for all that you do,” stated Boudreau.

Clockwise from top left: Peter Payton, Director of Information Technology, serves coffee to Joan Foster and Ona Jamieson. Jessica Gilbert, Clinical Nurse Manager of the Acute Care Program, serves volunteer Elsie Coulas. Auxiliary members Marilyn York, Dodie Bailey, Ruth Stewart, and Doris Handford make a $50,000 presentation to Julia Boudreau, VP of Corporate Services. Jen Valiquette, Clinical Nurse Manager of Regional Assault Program, serves Mireille Charbonneau.

Horton works towards joint recycling/garbage tender Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

The Township of Horton’s transportation and environmental committee discussed a number of important issues at its meeting on May 3. The township is currently in the process of working with Arnprior, Renfrew and the Township of McNab-Braeside in conjunction with the Community Improvement Fund to develop a joint tender for garbage and recycling collection. Public works manager Janet Collins explained to the committee they asked for an extension with their current contract with Beaumen Waste Management Systems. “We are working towards the joint tender with Arnprior, Renfrew and McNab Braeside,” said Collins. “I think it is beneficial.” The extension will be at the same price as it has been for the last three years. Two major changes with the extension are as of Sept. 1, Beaumen will no longer accept Styrofoam of any kind and no loose plastic bags of any kind. The only exception will be a bag of bags (all grocery bags and loose plastic in one bag). Coun. Dave Bennett, who chairs the committee, was concerned about the Styrofoam. “We need to have a discussion on how to handle the Styrofoam,” said Bennett. Mayor Robert Kingsbury said he had no problem with the extension.

Committee and later in the meeting council agreed to extend the contract with Beaumen. The new contract will now run from Sept. 1 to April 30, 2017. Horton pays Beaumen $6,600 per month for recycling collection and processing and $3,200 for garbage collection. It works out to a total of $117,600 per year. They also authorized Bennett to meet with them to discuss how to handle Styrofoam and Beaumenspresident Andrew Shouldice will also be invited to an ad-hoc committee meeting on April 18 to discuss the issue further. CLOTHING CONTRACT

Collins presented an update on the status of the G&K Services contract for clothing supplies because council directed her in February to terminate the contract. The staff recommendation was to purchase a new washer and dryer at a cost of $4,305. “I’ve really tried to keep an eye on it and we don’t have a lot of it,” said Collins. “I really don’t think it would affect the septic system.” Bennett asked to hold back on purchasing it until they discuss how it would affect the building Coun. Jamey Larone said he was definitely in support of purchasing the machines but

agreed to defer it as the contract is not over until June 24. The committee deferred the motion for further study. GARBAGE

Collins presented a report on the landfill disposal fees for individual garbage bags, which was implemented March 1. From March 1 to April 23 there has been a

total of 365 bags brought to the landfill. “It is significant the number that is coming in,” said Collins. “I think its very important and it is making a difference.” Residents are provided with two free tags and other tags must be purchased for $2. Thus far the total revenue is $730. Coun. Glen Campbell was pleased with the report. “All in all we are capturing the money now and it could add up,” said Campbell.

Big love for Big Bike Sherry Haaima

Sherry.haaima@metroland.com

It’s a fundraiser with plenty of heart. The 30-passenger Heart and Stroke Foundation Big Bike was in Renfrew April 29. Teams met in the Mack MacKenzie Motors parking lot and despite the number of participating teams being down, there was still plenty of enthusiasm and support for the cause – the ride in Lanark/Renfrew counties had raised $42,000 by the time all was said and done in Renfrew. Big Bike area co-ordinator Jeff Larocque led a rousing warmup complete with games before riders set off on a course through town. The Heart and Stroke Foundation is a cause that’s particularly dear to 39-yearold Nancy Kelly, who shows up to ride the Big Bike each year. It was in 1997 that doctors discovered, after years of symptoms that included a fast heartbeat, a hole in her heart. “It’s a common birth defect that is usually found be-

fore the age of 2,” said Kelly, a wife and mother of two young boys. “It also usually closes up on its own before the age of 2. Mine just went undetected.” Kelly had an active lifestyle, participating in a variety of sports in high school and beyond. “It didn’t slow me down,” she said. “I was in track and field, played ringette – everything.” The surgery to fix the problem was something Kelly will never forget. And while at the time it took its toll, requiring six weeks of recovery, she can’t say enough about the talented physicians and great care she received at the Ottawa Heart Institute. And now? “I feel great, there are no lasting effects,” said Kelly. She is joined each year on the big bike by her parents – Jack and Marilyn Abercrombie. She’s pleased to be able to contribute to the cause. “I feel I owe them big time,” said Kelly.

SHERRY HAAIMA/METROLAND

The 30-passenger Heart and Stroke Foundation Big Bike sets off in Renfrew. Riders from the Abercrombie family and Bonnechere Manor are on the bike. Earlier in the day, a team from MacKenzie Motors had a turn.

Nancy Kelly, Marilyn Abercrombie, Grace Yantha and Jack Abercrombie before the ride. The team raised $3,500.

TPP to benefit some Renfrew county businesses, hurt others Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

Cheryl Gallant was at a local high-end manufacturing plant recently to trumpet an international trade deal, but it is not clear that every business and worker will benefit. The MP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke welcomed fellow Conservative MP Ed Fast to Plaintree Systems in Arnprior on April 15 to praise the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). It would create a free-trade zone among 12 nations (excluding China) around the Pacific Ocean. It would be the world’s largest trade agreement, encompassing 40 per cent of the world’s economic output, and replace the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). “The Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal represents opportunity and jobs for local businesses,” Gallant said. “It is important for local employers to be aware of the potential for growth that exists. More trade translates into more jobs and a higher standard of living for Canadians.” She noted that Canada is a largely exporting nation, so a deal that will reduce import barriers in other countries will allow this nation’s companies to compete on a more even playing field. Gallant also credited Fast, who was minister of international trade in the previous government, for negotiating the 6,000-page deal. She chastised the current Liberal government for “delaying the ratification,”

which “would be catastrophic to our economy, global supply chains and lead to job losses.” Alastair Baird, manager of economic development services at the County of Renfrew, agrees some industries could see a benefit; particularly those with international head offices such as Arnprior Aerospace and the Renfrew area’s Magelian Aerospace-Haley Industries. It could also present opportunities for emerging specialized, advanced-technology local companies like Pillar5 Pharma in Arnprior and Bishop Water Technologies in Renfrew. “Will it let companies like Pillar5 exploit the market a bit more? I suspect it might,” Baird said. “Because it breaks down barriers and offers more choice to consumers.” However, there are long-held fears that Canada puts itself at risk adopting free trade deals without an innovation policy, according to David Wolfe’s column ‘Canada’s TPP negotiation strategy ignores a crucial piece of trade advice’ published in The Globe and Mail in March. “Studies of Canadian trade reinforce the fact that our exports are strongly biased in favour of raw materials and natural resources, while our imports are strongly concentrated in intellectual property-based and skill-intensive industries and products ... the very industries with the greatest potential for growth in the 21st-century economy,” Wolfe wrote. So if Wolfe’s analysis of past practice

holds true, local companies in the pharmaceutical or water filtration businesses will be subordinate to the county’s forestry industry when it comes to TPP. Baird has heard concerns from few business leaders in the county, with one notable exception. Beef producers, the single largest sector in agriculture, made a presentation to county council. Their industry, like eggs, dairy and others would move from a supply management model to an open market model. Because of Canada’s cold winters, production costs are much higher than, say, Brazil’s. It is possible that beef from South America could be sold for less at grocery stores than beef produced in Canada. Even when accounting for transportation costs. It is already true for lamb; most stores carry lamb from New Zealand, not Ontario. When anxiety over impacts to the agricultural sector emerged last fall, the government announced compensation over a 15year span to cope. The details remain cloudy. There are numerous other concerns with TPP. NAFTA hurt textiles. Few companies produce clothes in Canada because of it. A larger deal will only make that situation worse as companies shift to low wage countries like Vietnam for manufacturing. NAFTA didn’t solve Canada’s softwood lumber disputes with the United States, either. No matter how many rules are put in place, the U.S. is so powerful that it will almost always come out ahead, say many ob-

servers. Groups such as Canadian Journalists For Free Expression call TPP “public enemy number one,” in part for the secrecy that continues to surround negotiations. No public consultations have taken place. “When unpacked, it reveals itself to be less of a positive force for social and economic growth and more of a direct and unprecedented assault on democracy and free expression,” A.T. Kingsmith wrote on cjfe. org. “It is time for concerned citizens to put serious pressure on our elected leaders to repudiate or at least redraft this partnership before its anti-democratic policies become normalized and thus practically irreversible.” Kingsmith pointed to a country’s intellectual property laws falling subject to “corporate sovereignty provisions.” That means legislation introduced by elected representatives to improve citizen access to fundamental goods and services can be struck down if it takes away from a company’s expected profits. He cited a multinational pharmaceutical company using NAFTA provisions to force the Government of Canada to pay $500 million in reparations after it rejected two of the company’s patent applications. (Health Canada scientists determined the drugs Eli Lilly was trying to patent didn’t deliver the benefits they claimed.) See TPP page 14

TPP critics Continued from page 13

Similarly, tobacco giant Philip Morris is suing Uruguay for creating anti-smoking laws. The claim is that trade deals create a parallel legal system and undermine national sovereignty. There is also worry that TPP includes a surveillance-friendly clause granting governments backdoor access to public telecommunications channels, Kingsmith wrote. “This means that Internet service providers can openly and actively record our online habits, make our browsing activities and histories available to government agencies without a warrant, censor online content deemed to be unfavourable, and allow governments to remotely terminate access to the Internet for ‘suspicious’ individuals,” he wrote. As for workers, it remains a debatable point whether or not NAFTA helped or worsened conditions. Mexico has gained many jobs at the expense of Canada and the U.S., but remains unclear if their wages and working conditions have improved. Baird is confident that standards for both workers and the environment will improve under TPP. Other countries will be forced to adopt Canada’s progressive measures when it comes to human rights and natural resource extraction. “It should be good for the environment and employment standards,” he said. “Certification in forestry for example. They won’t be allowed to clear-cut. That’s just one of the upsides.” However, the whole issue may be scuttled anyway, depending on the outcome of the U.S. presidential election. TPP pretty well hinges on whether or not the U.S. signs on and Donald Trump, the Republican party’s likeliest candidate, doesn’t like it.

Renfrew Fair

Welcome all Renfrew fair exhibitors. The art committee is comprised of photography categories, paintings and drawings, garden art and woodworking. In the past, we have had few entries in the woodworking categories. We would welcome more. We do realize it is a difficult category as most people working with wood complete larger projects. If you find some spare time, take a look at our sections on line (www.renfrewfair.com) or drop into the fair office in the Armouries and pick up a list of categories. Some examples of categories are bird

lighting. So if you need a new hobby - pick up your camera and start snapping pictures. You may be surprised at what you come up with. Painting and drawing categories use pencil, pen or charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, oil and multimedia. All entries must be no larger than 24 x 30 and must be able to be hung. Entry tags are to be attached to the front when brought in for exhibit. Entry tags can be picked up at the fair office and are to be attached to all entries before bringing them in to the Exhibit Hall. There is also an entry form which must be handed into the office when the exhibits are

dropped off. All exhibits are received on the Tuesday evening between 6 and 9 p.m. and are to be picked up on the Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Any questions you may contact Judy at 513-432-5331 or by e-mail contact@renfrewfair.com. FRIENDLY COMPETITION

So start thinking of things to do for entries in the categories outlined above. It’s a great way to have a little competition between family and friends. Looking forward to seeing you at The Renfrew Fair, Sept. 711.

ThAnK yOU!!! The Township of McNab/Braeside would like to extend a big thank you to all those involved with the Earth Day Community Clean-up event held April 23. An impressive impact was made by over 50 volunteers as they scoured ditches and parkland for trash and recyclables. All told, close to 2 tons of garbage, metals and various recyclables were recovered and over 57 km of roadside ditches were cleaned. Event coordinator was Rec Committee member Teresa Bahm and she was pleased with the results and plans on making the event even better in 2017. A special thank you goes out to event sponsor Tim Horton’s Arnprior on Staye Court Drive for their provision of coffee and treats to our volunteers as well as support material such as garbage bags. We appreciate the efforts of participating groups such as members and families of the McNab/Braeside Recreation Committee, Valley Roof Truss, Boy Scouts, Cameron Woods Homeowners Association and McNab/Braeside Firefighters. Of course many individuals also made a significant valuable contribution, not just on the April 23 event day but also before and after. Thanks to all those that showed Mother Earth that you care!

In Memory of our Dear Nephew/Grandson Nathan Leclaire November 21st, 1981 to May 13th, 2009 If we could have a lifetime wish, and one dream that could come true, We would pray to God with all our, hearts just to see and speak to you. A thousand words won’t bring you back We know because we’ve tried and neither will a million tears We know because we’ve cried You have left behind our broken hearts and precious memories too But we’ve never wanted memories We’ve only wanted you Forever remembered, Forever Loved Aunts, Uncles, Gramma Betty

Vale, Glenda Anne (Nee Stubinsky) September 24th, 1948 – April 28th, 2016 We are saddened to announce the passing of Glenda Vale, after a lengthy battle with cancer on Thursday, April 28th, 2016. Survived by her mother, Jessie Stubinsky and predeceased by her father Frank Stubinsky. Lovingly remembered by her partner, soul mate and best friend, Norm Vale. Loving mother to Barbara McLaughlin (Chris Bilyk), Marcy Montpellier (Gates Montpellier) and Michael McLaughlin (Shelly Snow). Glenda was the very proud grandmother to Robbie Allard, Alex Allard, Josee Fauvelle, Jade Bouffard, Brayden Bilyk, Jared Bilyk, Sarah Snow and Shane Snow. She is remembered fondly by her sisters, Elaine Gorra (Bob), Dianne Moran (Brian) and Debbie Guthrie (Steve Meincke). Originally from the Ottawa Valley, Glenda enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially with Norm at camp (Bird Lake), tending to her flower gardens, feeding the chipmunks and ensuring the birds were always well fed. One of her favourite ‘getaways’ with Norm was Casino Rama. Glenda loved animals. At her request, donations to Pet Save, or the SPCA would be greatly appreciated. As per Glenda’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. A private family service will be held at a later date.

IN MEMORIAM

BURNETTE, Brian – In loving memory of a dear Husband, Father and Poppy, Brian Burnette, who passed away May 15, 2006. There is a bridge of memories, From here to heaven above. It keeps you very close to us, It’s called the bridge to love. We all know the heartache, of what your parting cost. But God in all His Glory, Has gained what we have lost. You gave us many things in life, Gifts both great and small. But most of all you gave us love, The greatest gift of all. Love you always, Cathy, Linda (Tim), Laurie (Dan), Matthew and Christopher

Paul Bourque June 27, 1954- May 9, 2010 God saw you getting tired, when hope was not to be, so he wrapped his arms around you, and whispered “come with me”. You didn’t deserve what you went through, and so he gave you rest, ‘God’s forest must be beautiful, he only take the best. So when we saw you sleeping, so peaceful and free from pain, we could not wish you come back, to suffer that all again. Lovingly remembered always Brenda, Troy, Tim and families

NATHAN LECLAIRE November 21, 1981 to May 13, 2009 In Memory of our dear Son, Brother and Uncle. It is seven years now Nathan, nevertheless you remain as close and dear to our hearts the same as when you left us that day. For as long as we breathe, we will grieve and ache for you, because love does last forever. Because I have endured the depths of grief I find there were gifts that evolved from this journey. The best gift of all Nath was just being your “Mom”. I also feel joy when it comes our way much deeper than before. I am much more grateful beyond words for small blessings, take absolutely nothing for granted, spend little or no time on trivia and am truly thankful for any pleasures and happiness that comes our way. On a lighter note Nath, your Dad is doing okay, back to work for the summer. Ryan and Charlie are doing well. Charlie just made his First Communion recently. He was all dressed up and was so handsome, just wanted to hug him. Going to be eight this summer. Now for the “Ultimate”. We are going to be grandparents again! Devin and Hailey are pregnant!! We are ecstatic! We are just back to the Cottage and going to renovate the trailer into a sleep camp for when cousins and friends stay. Sherrill and Don are a great help to us. What a great family we have. Without them it just wouldn’t be the same up there. How you used to enjoy your Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Heidi and Katie are still with us, however they are both twelve and showing their age. Looking forward to our many fish fries this year. Your favourite fishing spots on the lake are now landmarks. You were so caring and thoughtful in so many ways Nathan. I will cherish those moments forever. I know you are kept busy taking care of Gramps! Such a consolation knowing that you have each other. Wrap your arms around them Lord and let them know they are loved until we get to your land above. Love Mom, Dad, Ryan, Charlie and Devin.

August 28, 1950 – April 4, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of David William Jennings, unexpectedly on Salt Spring Island BC. David was predeceased by his son Michael. He is survived and greatly missed by his 3 children, Amanda, Lily (Damien) and Stephen (Jaymee) of Ontario. He adored his grandchild Riley and was always ready to show a picture of her. He will be sadly missed by his sister Joy Coupland (Alan), his niece Louise Faulkner (Tony), and nephew Andrew Coupland (Megan). David was born in Birkenhead England. He was a trained chef and once cooked for the Queen. He owned and operated an Inn in Wales before moving to Canada in 1976 to join his sister. He was an avid fan of motorcycles and racing. He spent many months at the Isle of Man racing and watching. It was common to find engines and car parts hidden under the kitchen table for David to work on in his spare time. During his time in Ottawa he worked as a chef and manager at several exclusive restaurants, and eventually for the government managing large food establishments. He was always greatly loved by his staff and co-workers, always ready to have a good laugh and help out. In 2006 he moved to Salt Spring to escape the winters of Ontario. He had several jobs and was fondly known as the British Pie Man to those who enjoyed his delicious cooking. He settled best at Mouats Home Hardware, and was always friendly and ready to help. He enjoyed going to work and his co-workers. David will be remembered by his family and friends as a positive, happy, friendly and kind person who touched the hearts of many people. There will be no service on Salt Spring by the family. There will be a Celebration of Life in Ontario at a later date.

Share your special moments with your friends and our readers with an announcement in Social Notes.

In the year of our Lord 2008 Randy David Durocher was given his wings at age of fifty-four Today, I dreamt I could fly I had the most beautiful wings They shone and glisten and sparkled like diamonds And best of all, they were just my size They carried me high into the winds that blew above the earth I could glide and twist and turn and just dive as fast or as slow as I wanted I could even dance I learnt to spin and tumble, to free fall and pull up just before I touched the earth and do it all again There was no more pain or sorrow, no tiredness, no excruciating ice or fire in my soul I am free and alive and I’m not coming back Written by his loving wife Marilyn Davidson-Durocher Fly My Darling Fly

Soccer program moves ahead with help of volunteers Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Horton is bending it like Beckham to ensure its new soccer program kicks off without a hitch. The Horton recreation committee heard at its May 3 meeting the new program now has 82 children registered. On April 27, they had a meet the coach night and handed out t-shirts that were sponsored by different local businesses. There are 10 teams in the under six and under eight programs and they have eight coaches and 10 co-coaches. The plan had been to use an area behind the community centre for the kids to play soccer but after some hard work to try and prepare it, it was determined it would not be ready for this year. The committee had two options: tender the job out or do the job in-house with donated equipment and labour. After receiving a quote, it was determined they did not have enough money in the budget and would go the volunteer route. The field has been tilled up by Deputy Mayor Robert Johnston, Coun. Dave Bennett and workers from Marshalls (Bennett’s company), all the work has been donated.

The Township of Horton is working on a new soccer field behind its community centre. This year it will rent land that is currently staked out. Johnston presented a report to the committee on the donated work; so far they have donated 151 hours, which would have cost the township $7,672. However, the only thing they requested as payment was fuel, which has cost $540. “Thank you very much on behalf of the residents of the township,” said Mayor Robert Kingsbury to a large round of applause. “You should be commended for your hard work.” If any contractor or operator would like to volunteer their equipment or time they are encouraged to contact the

recreation department: 613433-3303 or email the recreation manager Kathleen Rogers: krogers@hortontownship. com. They are currently looking at costs to seed or sod it for next year. As the field is not ready Johnston asked Willis Eady if the town could use two acres of her property, which neighbours the township’s property. The committee and later council agreed to enter into an agreement with Eady to rent the land at a cost of $500 from May 4 to July 15. Johnston has also volunteered to cut the grass for the soccer fields. The season starts

on May 25 and will end with a barbecue on July 13. FUNDRAISER

A group of dedicated volunteers is helping fundraise for the soccer league. They are hosting a Stand Up Comedy Show featuring Rick Lemieux and Clint Couchie on Friday, May 13 at the Horton Community Centre at 1005 Castleford Rd. Tickets for the show and a dinner cost $25 and can be purchased at JD Optical at the office or by calling Tina Hunt 613-433-6317 or Danielle McGregor 613-281-7443.

Generosity grows from Zone G7 The Royal Canadian Legion Zone G7 has once again joined forces to support the ongoing improvement efforts happening at Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Their most recent donation of $10,000 will be directed to the second phase of the Healing Garden Project—construction of the solarium on the second level of the nephrology unit. District commander Stan Halliday says he is very proud to get behind the project. “We were involved with raising funds for the dialysis program in the past and our goal is to continue to support our veterans, seniors and their spouses who need these services.” Legion Members see RVH as the backbone of the community. Zone G7 is composed of eight branches stretching across the county including Barry’s Bay, Chalk River, Cobden, Deep River, Eganville, Pembroke, Petawawa and Renfrew. Combined they have a long-standing history of outstanding support for RVH. Barb Desilets, RVH Foundation executive director, says that since 1988 the gifts received from the zone and local Legion branches is nearing the $1 million mark. “Today’s gift will enhance care by uplifting our patients with beautiful green space and extra comfort. The Healing Garden Project is the outside space when you visit the main entrance, and the second part of the project is creating the Solarium with a tranquil garden space accessible from inside the hospital,” Desilets explained, adding that it will be a very unique and inviting feature. “These types of donations make special things like this possible for our patients,” she stated to the group prior to their tour of the new Regional Nephrology Centre and a preview of the second floor Solarium. Zone Commander Wayne Bennett said members were very impressed with the work ethic and vision of the Healing Garden Committee to make the gardens a reality. The Royal Canadian Legion is one of the largest service-oriented organizations in the province. Their main focus is to address the needs of veterans, their dependants and those still serving in the Canadian Forces by contributing to the well-being of the community. Legion members actively support local and regional organizations by raising funds or sponsoring programs. 36 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, May 12, 2016

Leagues swing into new season at Dragonfly Golf Links Bill Rainboth

Dragonfly Golf Links General Manager

It is great to be back! Taking in the sights and sunshine from the 18th tee is Dragonfly member Wendy McLaren, and her granddaughter Emma. Winter played a cruel game on us this year as it came in like a lamb, but it certainly went out like a lion. February ambitions of golfing in March froze quickly as the temperature dropped and numerous dumps of snow delayed opening day much later than we anticipated. Dragonfly finally opened its doors Thursday, April 14. And while we were not heavily booked Thursday or Friday as it was still quite cool, it was standing room only for our first official weekend of 2016. The course is in great shape and getting better with each passing day. Almost 200 Dragonfly League members kicked off the 2016 season with near perfect weather this past week. Dragonfly holds their Men’s League on Tuesdays and Wednesday, and Ladies League is on Thursdays. The Men’s league has grown this year to 26 teams of six golfers. Each team has a stand-

ing afternoon tee time for the duration of the season. They play nine holes of modified scrambles (known as best ball), with the format changing from week to week. The lowest score of the week came from the team of Cobus Homes. Closest to the pin winners were Curtis Thompson and Chad Scerba on Tuesday, and Chad Thompson and Randy Pender on Wednesday. Our ladies play a straight four-person scramble (best ball) with Shot Gun starts every Thursday at 5:30 pm. The teams from Wood Duck did not miss a beat from their great play of last year with the lowest score of the week, and Sherri Cobus and Nicole Hyland were closest to the pin winners. There is still room in our League for funloving, non-competitive teams who would like to join an already awesome group of ladies. Please call the pro shop at 613-432-3838 for further inquiries. All team scores this week will be used to establish handicaps and flights for next week In other news we had Jonah O’Connor with a double eagle on the par five, 11th hole. The double eagle, or albatross is considered even more rare than the hole in one. Congrats Jonah!

Ladies bball starts with run of points Rob Warren

The first half between Midtown Flooring and the Lumber Jills consisted of three runs. Midtown started with a mini run of four straight points. The Lumber Jills countered with seven points, only to have Midtown run out the half with 15. Midtown carried on to win 39-16. Jill Barr and Sarah Dougherty topped the scorers with 10 points each. Jill Barr hit for 12 of her 16 points in the second half, to lead Midtown over the Basket Brawlers 51-18. Jamie Nolan played tough inside to lead the Brawlers with eight. The Basket Brawlers hung in with Signature/Styles/K L Plumbing for three quarters. Alyse Laplaunte’s 11 points in the second half propelled SS/KLP to a 33-22 win. Megan Riopelle led the Brawlers with eight.

After trailing Frances/Lemke Cooperators by scores of 12-7, 12-11, and 16-11, the Lumber Jills surged to a 19-16 lead. With time running out Patty Hanson drilled a trey followed shortly by a Cooperator put back to snatch victory from the Jills, 26-25. Jenna Barr of the Jills led all scorers with her eight points coming in the second half. The Lumber Jills held a slim 17-16 advantage over the Reunions at half time. The teams battled back and forth, but when time ran out, the Lumber Jills still held a one-point edge, 33-32. Judeline Wren led the field with 11 points. The hoop looked big to Midtown Flooring as they pumped in 59 points to 30 for the Reunions. Sarah Dougherty, with 16 points, led Midtown snipers Jill Barr (12), Andrea Martin (11), and Courtney Roach (10) in double figures.

Theme dinner benefits CPAN, RRWG

About 70 people sat down to enjoy extraordinary culinary delights and raise funds for both the Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) and the Renfrew Refugee Welcome Group (RRWG) last Saturday. More than $2,200 will be donated to the two community causes. The Hebron Community Christian Reformed Church’s social committee organized the themed dinner party, which was held in the spacious Stewart Hall of Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church. “We felt as Christians we could help both the refugee sponsorship fund and the Child Poverty Action Network through the generosity of the public who contributed to this fundraising event,” said Mary DeVries. “Our church has been trying to find ways of responding to the needs of the people from our towns

and villages.” Eight tables were set with a different theme represented by the food and the diners’ costumes. Hosts and themes were Mary and Gary DeVries, Canada; Janet and Harry de Boer, gardening; Grace and Cor Dykstra, bikers; pastor Dan Meinema, Pacific North West; Connie Meinema, Viva Italia; Sabrina and Casey Vander Sleen, masquerade; Kim and Tymen van Lindenberg, farm, and Richard and Anita Smit, Korean. Each of the hosts prepared the feasts for their various tables in the church kitchen. The farm-themed table had the largest group of diners - 16, including nine children. “The conviviality of the crowd showed how good food with good cheer is the right mix for success - it was really a lot of fun for all,” said Mary.

The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, May 12, 2016 51

Bologna a special treat at Briscoe’s General Store Briscoe’s General Store, to me, was just about the most exciting place in all of Renfrew County. If Father had to go to buy some nails, or coal oil, or maybe some leaf tobacco, I would beg to go with him. As soon as I went in the door, I could smell the maple cookies in the tilted box, and the smell of rubber boots hanging from a rafter, and then deeper inside, the scent of molasses in the wood barrel at the back of the store. Across the store, about half way down, was a glass counter where meats and perishables were kept. And inside was my very favourite food in all the world. It sat on a white enameled tray, and to me, it looked like it weighed at least 20 pounds. It was a big fat roll of bologna ... of course, we simply called it balony back then. I would rather have a slice of balony than a box of cracker jacks, or a bunch of butterscotch suckers which came bundled up with an elastic band. Mother knew how I loved balony, and if there were a few pennies left after she bought what was on her list, she would say to Mr. Briscoe, “I guess we’ll have a slice of balony, too.” He would take out the big roll, and with a butcher knife that looked like it would do harm to an elephant, he would slice off a thin piece and hand it to me, without benefit of even a piece of waxed paper. It wouldn’t make it to the door and the buggy! I would roll it into one long piece, and devour it right on the spot. And then one day, after Mother had finished her list, she again said I could have a slice of balony. Well, was I in for a surprise. Mr. Briscoe went behind the counter, took out the big roll, and there was a brand new piece of machinery to cut the slices. He put the roll on a tray attached to it, clamped the meat down with what looked like a fork, and turned a crank, and as neat as you

cut me a slice, for me on his new machine. Never -- TRINITY-ST. Scotiabank support for Celebration of Life Bridge chalk talk In January 2016, the 12th annual Celebration of Life fundraiser took place, and in April, staff from the Scotiabank in Renfrew made their 12th consecutive donation to the event. The bank’s Team Community Program matches up to $5,000 for this event by having five or more employees involved in raising the funds. Staff members helped out at Celebration of Life by working at the door and manning the 50/50 table. Staff members were Nancy Rousselle, Lona Logan-Scully, Patricia Leclaire, Brenda Pender, Cipriana Bergin and Val Kasaboski. Celebration of Life raises funds for Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) and Hospice Renfrew. “We’ve been doing this every year for 12 years,” said Lona Logan-Scully, ENERGY $AVING$!

Choose foods produced organically, locally and in season. Support your regional farmers and farming industry: buying locally and in season is better for the environment than buying foods that have been shipped hundreds of kilometres to your local market.

“We appreciate the team from Scotiabank and everyone in the community who gets involved or comes out to this event and helps to make it a success year after year,” said Alyssa Gillan.

Nine-and- one-half tables competed at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre May 4. Before the 1 p.m. start of regular action, the Chalk Talk conducted by Wayne Daze zeroed in on the responder’s bids when sitting with four-card support. Previous talks dealt with threecard support. The whole context for these bids by responder is that eight-card and nine-card fits should dictate at least two and three-level contracts and many times game or slam tries. Wayne laid out the point range with corresponding bids. With 0-6 points, the responder would bid three hearts over an opener’s one heart when holding four hearts. With 7-9 points and four hearts, the responder would bid three diamonds. And with 1012 points and four hearts, three clubs, a bid which also conveys game and slam interest. Heart slams were the order of the afternoon with four pairs successful in 6-level contracts.
