She's one of Greater Madawaska Township's greatest volunteers. By all accounts, it was a packed house at the Calabogie Community Centre April 27 as Marie Buscomb was presented two prestigious volunteer awards. Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy presented the Warden's Community Volunteer Award and the Governor General's Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers was presented by Greater Madawaska Mayor Brian Hunt on behalf of the Governor General of Canada. "These awards are given to recognize individuals who contribute to their community and selflessly offer their time and effort," said Mayor Hunt. "Our township is blessed with many great volunteers and they are the backbone of rural municipalities. It was an honour to be afforded the opportunity to present two prestigious awards to Marie, one of our township's greatest volunteers." Buscomb is well-known in Calabogie and area for her tireless efforts on a number of fronts, including as the driving force behind the Calabogie Community Christmas Concert, as well as for her work on Canada Day celebrations, the Barnet Park Committee and on other community groups.

RENFREW, NEIGHBOURS TO OPEN SERVICE-SHARING TALKS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Renfrew county municipalities are being warned to come up with cost efficiencies and service-sharing ideas or face having to significantly hike taxes or reduce services starting next year. As a result, representatives from Renfrew, Admaston/Bromley, Horton and Greater Madawaska will meet in the near future to discuss possible sharing of staff and supplies. Additionally, a meeting of all 17 Renfrew county municipalities to discuss efficiencies - as suggested by Bonnechere Valley will likely be held later this year, although some representatives are doubtful that such a large group will be able to agree on anything substantial. Even Renfrew's neighbours, while agreeing to meet, are playing down expectations. "Nothing may come out of it, or we may find areas that can save us money," said Horton Mayor Dave Bennett. Horton realizes that it will always be linked to Renfrew, as the town can provide services it can't, he noted. As for the meeting with 16 other municipalities, "they're too diverse" to expect much, he said. Agreeing that municipalities are facing an "enormous challenge" when it comes to money matters, Admaston/Bromley Mayor Michael Donohue said histownship is willing to explore all avenues in the effort to find effi-

However, he sounded a note of caution, stressing that councils need to be sensitive to implications of sharing services. Changes that make it more difficult for ratepayers to access services and disadvantage local suppliers wouldn't make sense, he said. "On one hand, the government is encouraging us to promote economic development in our townships ... but centralization could do the opposite," he said. Greater Madawaska Mayor Brian Hunt suggested that meet-
ings focus on specific themes, so elected representatives could include staff with expertise on each topic. But first, mayors have to make sure their councils are "buying in" to the process, he said. "We have to be serious about this," said Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon, who raised the issue at Renfrew council's meeting April 24 and Renfrew County council's session on the same day. "The province wants municipalities to make responsible and substantive efforts to reduce costs." He said that if municipalities think of using the 'modernization' money given them by the province to "build a shanty to put their steamer in," they'll be in for a rude shock. The province will be "very
watchful" of how the money is spent and is expecting to hear about 'success stories' from municipalities about streamlining operations and working with neighbours, he said. He suggested that Renfrew and its three closest neighbours could discuss a variety of services - from administrative duties and information technology (IT) to a fire master plan and telephone-answering. "There are some very bright people in all four municipalities. I'm sure they could all come up with ideas." Renfrew Mayor Don Eady said that the first meeting should be a "feeling-out" to see how the others view the process; perhaps other townships and Arnprior could eventually be invited to the table, he said. Emon said that the Bonnechere Valley meeting proposal for all 17 county municipalities won't be productive unless an agenda with a few specific topics is set to kick-start the conversation. He recommended the focus be on trucks, paper, finances and IT. Warden Jennifer Murphy suggested that gathering be discussed again in June after some smaller, lower-tier meetings are held. She noted that municipalities can share ideas as well as services. "If one municipality is doing something very well, the others can learn from it," she said.

A Greater Madawaska man was killed in an ATV collision in North Frontenac Township on Saturday, May 11, OPP report. Shortly before 11 a.m. on that day, officers from the Frontenac detachment of the OPP responded to a report of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) collision on Hunt Camp Lane in North Frontenac Township. Police say the collision happened during an organized group event, with riders travelling between Norcan Lake and Ompah. The man driving the ATV was travelling southbound, left the roadway and entered the ditch. Renfrew County Paramedics and Madawaska Valley Firefighters were on scene when police arrived. The man, identified as Richard Culligan, 57 of Greater Madawaska Township, was pronounced deceased at the scene.OPP traffic collision investigators attended the scene and the collision remains under investigation.

STORYLAND, FORESTERS FALLS ROADS IN FOR REPAVING JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Renfrew County council has given the green light to repave sections of Storyland and Foresters Falls roads. The approvals, made at council's April 24 meeting, will cost the county close to $600,000. The Storyland Road rehabilitation will be tackled in conjunction with Ontario Ministry of Transportation repaving of the High-
way 17 intersection, including the entrances. The ministry had suggested the work be done by joint contract. The county agreed and will upgrade Storyland Road (County Road 4) from the highway to Eady Road. Council was told the section "severely deteriorated" this winter. It will be the first stage of a process to be completed with a second lift of asphalt in 2021. The first phase this year, stabilization of the road and the first
lift, will cost the county about $160,000. Council also approved the low bid of $453,617 by Petawawa's H & H Construction to rehabilitate 2.6 kilometres of Foresters Falls Road from Highway 17 to Marjorie Street. The low tender came in about $11,000 under budget. Council also approved a contract to replace the Osceola Culvert on Micksburg Road to low bidder R.G.T. Clouthier of Pembroke for $384,521.
RENFREW DOWNTOWN RESTAURANTS FACE NEW PATIO RULES JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Renfrew is updating its outdoor patio bylaw to ensure they complement changes to main street. Development and works committee chair Mike Cou-
las said the town is likely to "feel the heat" from some businesses not happy with the new guidelines. However, the town is working with them to ensure the patios are feasible "but still look nice," he said. The bylaw requires establishments to construct
patios based on set specifications that would "complement the newly reconstructed downtown area." The committee recommended a phased-in approach to ease the financial burden the new rules placed on the hospitality industry.
SHIPPING CONTAINER BAN FOES SPEAK UP AT CALABOGIE HEARING JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com About 20 residents showed up April 15 to speak against a proposal by Greater Madawaska to ban any new shipping containers in three residential zones in the township. No one at the public hearing spoke in favour of the plan. However, it was noted there were written submissions received on both sides of the issue. Several speakers asked why the township wanted to impose the ban in the residential 1, rural residential and limited service residential zones. "It's not us that's doing this," said Mayor Brian Hunt. "We're just responding to public requests to consider it." Noting he had no idea how many containers were in the township, he stressed council had not made a deci-
sion on the matter. It is holding the hearing to receive the public input, he said, thanking those in attendance for sharing their views. He pointed out there is no plan to ban the containers in rural, commercial and industrial areas. However, he said council has received "a number of concerns" about the containers being eyesores in built-up areas. If property owners already have a container with a valid building permit, it should be grandfathered in and not subject to the ban, he said. A speaker suggested the ban was unnecessary because the township controls their use through the buildingpermit process. Others suggested forcing people to take out building permits for even the larger units was overkill. Asked if a shipping container turned into a home would be banned under the
proposed bylaw, township planner Luke Desjardins said no, because it would longer be an accessory structure. A speaker questioned why the township is worried about shipping containers when it does little about residents with front yards full of junker cars. Another speaker suggested the township should be careful when limiting their use because they are valuable for storage as extreme weather incidents such as ice storms and tornadoes become more common. One speaker suggested the township had authority over only municipal land and couldn't legally designate anything on private property. However, Desjardins disagreed, citing Section 34.1 of the Ontario Planning Act. "Very few municipalities in Ontario have no zoning regulations," he said. Desjardins will go over the written and spoken submissions and compile a report to council, which will make a decision at a future meeting.

FLOOD VICTIMS RAISE CONCERNS AT RENFREW TOWN HALL MEETING JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com What was supposed to be an information session on flood recovery turned into an outcry for prevention of future floods. The County of Renfrew hosted a Public Town Hall Meeting at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre on May 13 that drew about 100 people, including some residents who raised concerns about what could be done for future crises. A state of emergency declaration has been in place in the county since April 28. There were some in the crowd who were more concerned what measures will be taken to prevent flooding from happening again. The residents called for an independent public inquiry to see what can be done to control water levels throughout the Ottawa River watershed, so that release from the Northern dams doesn't bottleneck on the Ottawa River over the stretch between Pembroke and Arnprior. Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy told the crowd that while the residents' concerns were warranted, their main focus right now should be to get through the current disaster and recovery. White Lake resident Rick Armishaw was in attendance when he heard this, and spoke up, saying while the panel was
making good points on recovery, they needed to listen to what the residents were saying. "I appreciate all the information that has been given here today by the officials," he told the panel. "However, there needs to be a connect between what the residents want to know and what you are telling us. The province may have some of the answers, but I think the people want to hear those answers from our local elected officials." Armishaw said he has a few neighbours who have been severely affected by the flood, and has spent lots of time helping them with recovery and building barriers. The information session highlighted the many services available to those affected by the flood. The speakers provided briefings on the history of this year's flood, which began in mid-April, as well as sharing hygienic and health-related tips to keep in mind during recovery. Community volunteer and panel member Fred Blackstein, who assisted with the 1998 ice storm that resulted in at least 30 casualties, compared the storm with the current flooding. "While there haven't been as many seriously injured during the flood, it can still be just as damaging as the ice storm," he said. "While back in 1998 there were tree branches snapped, roofs blown away and base-

CALABOGIE TORNADO VICTIMS GET TRAILER REPRIEVE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Greater Madawaska council has approved an exemption to allow two tornado victims to set up a travel trailer to live in at their relative's while their house is being rebuilt. Council is allowing Charles Gay and Kendell Moran to live in the trailer at a sister-in-law's property in the township. Their home at 71 Partridge Dr. in
Calabogie was damaged so severely in last September's tornado that it will have be demolished and rebuilt. Council approved the temporary arrangement at its April 15 meeting, noting the special circumstances. The bylaw allows for the couple to situate the trailer temporarily on their own property, but Gay explained as he works shifts it would be difficult to get proper sleep so close to the
construction. Placing the trailer in a campground near summer vacationers would also be too noisy, he suggested. "Since the tornado, this has been an extremely difficult experience with living arrangements, insurance, engineers, etc.," the couple wrote to the township in making the request. After checking to see if there were any possible concerns, council agreed to allow the trailer to be situ-
HORTON, GREATER MADAWASKA SEEK TO UPLOAD ROADS TO COUNTY JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Horton and Greater Madawaska are preparing to ask Renfrew County to take over four of their roads. Horton council has long argued that as Lime Kiln Road connects Highway 17 and Burnstown Road, it should be viewed as a connector. Therefore, Renfrew County should assume responsibility for it.
Council will take a bit more time in "getting its ducks in a row" before making the official request. It was noted it might be difficult to come up with an accurate traffic count on the road this summer as Lime Kiln is expected to be busy when Burnstown Road is being reconstructed between Pucker Street and Confusion Corner. Meanwhile, Greater Madawaska is intending to upgrade Ferguson Lake
Road, hopefully with the help of an infrastructure grant, to bring it up to a standard so the county will consider taking it over. The township would like to see the county take over the full connecting link between Highway 132 and Centennial Lake Road (County Road 65). That would mean the county taking over Mount St. Patrick and Flat roads as well as a stretch of Kennelly Road.

The arrival of warmer weather brings with it increased traffic on our roads as people hit the highways after a long winter. Canada Road Safety Week, May 14-20, is a good opportunity to have a look at the numbers and consider ways to improve the situation for everyone. The campaign is part of the broader Canada's Road Safety Strategy 2025, which aims to make Canada's roads the safest in the world. So far this year, 58 people have died on Ontario Provincial Police-patrolled roads. Speed, alcohol/drugs, inattentive driving and lack of seatbelt use are linked to almost half (45 per cent) of the deaths. There were 97 road fatalities this time last year, with more than half (53 per cent) of the deaths linked to - Thomas Carrique, these same causal factors. And while police are OPP Commissioner relieved to see a significant decrease in preventable road fatalities, they caution that poor behaviours on the road can easily tip the scales in the wrong direction. In 2018, more than half of the 332 deaths on OPP-patrolled roads were attributed to speed, alcohol/drugs, inattentive driving and lack of seatbelt use. Canada Road Safety Week is an annual enforcement and education-driven initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. The campaign aims to increase public compliance with safe driving and reduce injuries and save lives on our roads. This week and always, OPP officers will be highly visible in their efforts to keep roads safe, but they are hoping to see road users achieve this goal on their own rather than through enforcement. "Canada Road Safety Week is an effective traffic enforcement initiative, however it is only part of the solution to saving lives. It is important that everyone take responsibility to ensure safety on our roads. Make a commitment to obey speed limits, wear your seatbelt and never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs, or while distracted," said OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique. Solicitor General Sylvia Jones reminds drivers to have respect while on the road. "Driving is a privilege that requires your full attention when behind the wheel. It takes a conscious effort from all drivers to limit distractions to avoid potential injuries. Violating the 'rules of the road' is a major cause of collisions so we all need to respect the law to ensure road safety. Make driving safely your number 1 priority."

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY EDUCATION CUTS ARE SHORT-SIGHTED To the editor: For those expecting the Doug Ford Progressive Conservatives to cut government as deeply as was done during the Mike Harris years, the recent budget comes as a surprise in continuing to increase government spending. Yet the budget still bites hard, particularly where it proposes cutting back on classrooms. The Ford government budget proposes to increase classroom sizes from grades 4 to 12 and for high school students to take four of their courses through online. Rather than making government services leaner and more efficient, these cuts arguably instead achieve nothing more than simply passing existing costs of education onto the private citizens of tomorrow. In-person learning alongside other students, including in specialized and intimate smaller class sizes, is conducive to adolescent learning. It also
strengthens community bonds in a way that no online course can, especially in rural small-town settings like with Renfrew County. There are wiser but bolder cuts that could be made to reduce inefficiency and duplication in Ontario's education sector: eliminate the Roman Catholic school board (and compensate the teachers currently working in it). The proposed cuts to Ontario's classrooms are not wise investments in Ontario's next generation; they are instead shortsighted fiscal gain at the expense of long-term pain to the students of rural communities.

NATURE PROVIDES ITS OWN FLOODING SOLUTION To the editor: This letter refers to the May 2 editorial "Flooding reminds us we share this earth." Quote " ... we need to protect Mother Nature before it's too late." Does
Mother Nature not provide us with solutions to the destructive flooding many are experiencing? If we look at the forests in the area there are numerous still-water ponds that have formed in Gillies Grove and the Macnamara conservation areas. Trees and undergrowth consume a vast quantity of water and the soil acts as a "sponge" to store water. To cut down canopied oldgrowth trees, as is planned by Ontario Ministry of Health to develop a new nursing home (not an expansion as announced earlier) will contribute to, and exacerbate, flooding and global warming. Replacing trees with asphalt and shingles will see added flow to the storm sewers and into the rivers.

This past week my sister Karen and I walked the Macnamara Trail, a delightful trail that wanders through the Nopiming Game Preserve on the east side of Arnprior. My goal was to photograph some of the wildflowers that grace the trail in early spring. Two things were very different about this year's efforts. The excessively high water of the neighbouring Ottawa River resulted in parts of the trail being flooded, making boots a necessity. And, unexpectedly, colourful wildflowers were absent over much of the trailside terrain. The squeals of yellow-bellied sapsuckers accompanied us all through our walk. These aptly named woodpeckers drill columns of holes in trees, lapping up the resulting sap. The return of sapsuckers is soon followed by ruby-throated hummingbirds, which depend heavily on the woodpeckers' wells for nutrition until nectar-rich wildflowers come into bloom. Eventually we came across

sizable patches of bloodroot and sharp-lobed hepatica. Bloodroots are one of my favourite wildflowers. Their white blooms with bright yellow stamens are beautiful to the eye; their leaves are sculptured marvels. When the floral bud first emerges from the ground, it is tightly wrapped inside a heavily veined and sinuous leaf, just like a newborn baby swathed in a soothing blanket. Bloodroots, like hepaticas, spring beauties, trout-lilies, and white trilliums (the latter two found only in bud that day) bloom early to exploit the sun's warmth before tree leaves open, replacing sunlight with shade. The Macnamara Trail is rich with spring ephemerals, which vanish as soon as darkness dominates their domain. This year, those colourful wildflowers are at least one week behind their usual blooming times. I was particularly looking forward to seeing wild ginger in flower. A small escarpment bordering the trail is richly adorned with them, and when we arrived at that site their fuzzy heart-shaped leaves were found in abundance. But like the trilliums, only large unopened buds were visible. Only after extensive searching were a few open flowers located. The wine-coloured blooms lie on the ground under the leaves, and so are easily overlooked. They are well worth

A close inspection brings to the nose a rather pungent odour, not unlike that owned by decaying fungi. That unpleasant smell is there for a purpose. While many wildflowers release pleasant perfumes to attract pollinators, wild ginger attracts fungus gnats, tiny flies that lay their eggs on rotting mushrooms. The gnats roam wild ginger blossoms looking in vain for a place to lay their eggs, transferring pollen in the process. This exploitation is called "brood site deception" because the insects are tricked into thinking they found food for their larvae. The flies leave disappointed while the wily wildflower achieves its pollination goal. Red trilliums, soon to be in

bloom, also subscribe to this deceitful strategy. However, their odour doesn't resemble decaying fungus, but rotting flesh, because flesh flies are their dupes. HORTON BREAKS WITH NEIGHBOURS IN SUPPORTING COMMUNITY SAFETY PLAN MAJORITY OF RENFREW COUNTY MUNICIPALITIES BALK AT PROVINCIAL EDICT ON POLICING JOHN CARTER Being contrary to all other Renfrew County municipalities when it comes to implementing a community safety and wellbeing plan isn't deterring Horton council. Horton Mayor Dave Bennett was the only county councillor to vote against a motion balking at a provincial government order requiring municipalities to develop the plan in conjunction with the OPP by 2021. On a 16-1 vote, Renfrew County council authorized the warden to inform the province it will not initiate the plan, arguing the onus and costs should borne by the OPP, not "downloaded" on "cash-strapped municipalities." However, after Horton council heard a presentation on the plan by Renfrew OPP Detachment Commander Colin Slight, Bennett concluded its implementation could help reduce policing costs. The safety plan would have agencies such as mental health, social services, education, and family and children's services attend some calls related to their expertise instead of OPP officers, he said. The plan would also come up with proactive ways to prevent crime and reduce risks, again reducing the number of calls to OPP. Bennett said not having the OPP respond makes sense in some instances and would free up officers to handle more serious crimes, including keeping speeders and impaired drivers off local roads. "I see it as helping them help us," he said. He said municipalities have been asking the OPP and province "what we can do to
keep policing dollars down." Yet when they come up with a plan, "we turn around and won't help ... I'm not sure why they're so against it." Bennett said he also worries refusing to go along will be counterproductive as the province has made it clear if municipalities fail to develop a plan "it will be imposed on us and we'll be billed," he told township council at its April 2 meeting. "And the pressure will be on the municipalities not the county, as they don't pay OPP costs," he added. However, as all other county representatives opposed the plan, Bennett asked his council to mull over and research the matter and decide at the April 16 council meeting whether the township should remain out of step with the rest of its neighbours. At that session, councillors supported Bennett's stand in defending the safety plan idea. "They (other councils) must have heard something different than we did," said a puzzled Deputy Mayor Glen Campbell. Council agreed to write a letter to the warden endorsing Bennett's opposition to the county stand. Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon backs the county position, telling town council April 23 it appears most Ontario municipalities, particularly the rural ones, are adamant developing such plans should not be the function of municipal governments. McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett also agrees, saying he's "totally against" Horton's take on the issue. Calling it a "pure download," he said he expects the results of the plan to be "little or nothing." He said he hoped Horton council would change its mind after giving it "sober second thought." Greater Madawaska Mayor Brian Hunt told his council the plan should be an "OPP
matter" and for municipalities to take it on would be a burden on finances and staff time. "It's certainly not our area of expertise to take it over," he said. The letter to Solicitor General Sylvia Jones from Warden Jennifer Murphy made it clear the requirement in Bill 68 to have municipalities develop a community safety and well-being plan "is not something that we agree with nor support." Therefore, Renfrew County municipalities have elected not to initiate the development of the plans, she wrote. Murphy explained Renfrew County's mix of small urban and rural communities makes the task of developing such plans a "significant challenge." Creating a new standing sectoral committee to monitor, implement and evaluate the plan and its activities is "an unnecessary cost to already cash-strapped municipalities," she said. The county feels the tools to reduce OPP costs are already in place through existing situation round tables and police service boards (however, it's possible current police services board will be consolidated as is happening to health units). Furthermore, increasing OPP costs is more a factor of rising wages and operating costs than call volumes, maintains the county. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the Eastern Ontario Wardens' Caucus have also taken stands similar to that of Renfrew County, citing many of the same arguments.

RCI SHOWS OFF COMPLETED RENOVATIONS AT OPEN HOUSE JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com Students, parents and alumni of Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) were present to celebrate the grand opening of their new office and foyer on May 7. The renovations on the lower floor added a spacious administrative office, support rooms and a student common area to the high school. The grand opening was celebrated in tandem with RCI's annual open house, where Grade 6 students in the community were introduced to the institution they will be attending in the 2019-2020 school year. "We thought this would be a great opportunity to not only give prospective students a tour of our school, but also to showcase our recently completed renovations," RCI principal Terry Hughes said. Grade 8 students at RCI served as tour guides to show elementary students all the classes and extracurricular activities the school has to offer. In addition, visitors could get a bite to eat outside, with a choice of hot dogs or hamburgers with pop. Renovations at RCI began at the end of the school year in 2018 and were completed at the end of April.

On May 6, construction began on multiple side roads in Renfrew as part of the Highway 60 - Downtown Part B reconstruction project. As part of the project, Munroe Avenue East (from Raglan Street to Plaunt Street), O'Gorman Avenue (Bridge Street to Lochiel Street North) and Argyle Street South (Bridge Street to O'Gorman Avenue) are closed until further notice. The original plans only included Highway 60 but, during the engineering design, town council extended the project limits to include the connecting streets. Town of Renfrew engineering technician Lane Cleroux said that residents will be notified once an end date is decided on.

Youth entrepreneurs are encouraged to plan ahead and reach out to ERC to learn about the Summer Company Program and begin developing their business plan now. Summer Company is funded by the Government of Ontario to enable young people to start a business, create their own summer job and to follow their entrepreneurial dreams with funding support of up to $3,000. tween the ages of 15 and 29 to start and operate their own business. Successful applicants will receive up to $1,500 to kick-start their business by helping cover startup costs. DOUGLAS-BORN ARTIST TO BE HIGHLIGHTED AT DAN GORMAN MEMORIAL TALK JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com Douglas-born Michael Agnew will be the guest speaker at the Bromley Historical Society's eighth annual Dan Gorman Memorial Talk. This free event will be held on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m. in the Old Town Hall in Osceola.Agnew will speak about the internationallyknown Canadian impressionist artist Mary Alexandra Bell Eastlake, who was born in Douglas in 1864. Her artwork and ceramics can be found in collections and galleries across the country, including the National Gallery of Canada.Mary Alexandra Bell studied art in Montreal,
New York and Paris. She achieved international acclaim as an impressionist portrait painter and was the first Canadian-born woman to be a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art, RCA. Her work was well received at the salon expositions in Paris and London. She married English painter Charles Herbert Eastlake and moved to England, where she devoted her time to learn enamelling and metal work for the produc-
tion of jewelry as an applied art. She returned to Canada in 1939 and exhibited her works in Canada and the United States. She died in Ottawa in 1951.Agnew, who grew up in the Douglas area, graduated from the University of Waterloo, and rose to the rank of senior vice-president, technology, for both Noranda Inc. and Falconbridge Ltd., two large international mining and metallurgical companies based in Canada. That's the contention of Horton council, which is looking into ways it can assist the cemetery's volunteer board. As the majority of residents buried there are from Renfrew, the town should be involved too, said Mayor Dave Bennett. The board recently held a meeting in March to come up with ideas on how to deal with the $9,000 a year shortfall it is facing to maintain the historic cemetery to a proper standard. Joe’s Ottawa Valley Gals (step dancers) Terri-Lynn Smith, Tammy-Lyn Ferguson, and Sarah Dick surprised Joe with a dance reminiscent of their years together when the dancers were young and Joe was younger. Marikje and Ali Devries showed the audience that step dancing is still alive in the Valley. Thank you one and all! Thank you to the staff of Quail Creek who adjusted their schedules to make the day possible. The kitchen staff served a beautiful birthday cake and beverages and provided a lovely luncheon for family and friends after the fiddle and dance party. At having just turned seven years old, winner Sadie Brydges is the youngest recipient of this prestigious award.
Carol's brother John was on hand to present the award at the Renfrew Skating Club's annual awards banquet Sunday, March 31. Club coaches Tracey Jamieson and Katie Skerkowski were on-hand to praise the executive on a record-breaking season with numbers up in every program. "The executive put in countless volunteer hours each year to ensure the continuance of the club," Skerkowski said. "We wouldn't have the successful club that we have if it weren't for them." Awards were handed out to skaters in each of the programs.

As many of the signatures were former Toronto Maple Leafs, Webster had no problem giving up the jersey. "I'm a Boston fan," he said. Among the signatures adorning the sweater are those of broadcaster Ron MacLean and former players Rick Vaive, Brent Gretzky, Al Iafrate, Scott Pearson, Mark Laforest and others. Famous hockey stars, the Beatles and beefcake images of semiclad firefighters: It's a raffle that's sure to attract plenty of attention. Tickets are now on sale for the annual Horton Quilters raffle to raise money for township recreation initiatives. The centrepiece of the raffle, a quilt lovingly crafted by the high-spirited members of the Heritage Arts and Crafts Ladies group, features blocks paying homage to firefighters in a floral theme. The quilters, who meet Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon at the Horton Community Centre, came up
with the pattern and each one contributed to the impressive final product. The Rescue Me quilt, completed on Easter Monday, is certain to be a popular attraction as tickets are sold at various functions, fundraisers and at the Horton municipal office over the next seven months. The draw will be made Dec. 19, just in time for the prize to be a wonderful Christmas present for someone. And that's not all. At a recent Horton council meeting, recreation committee members in attendance put out the call for donations of a second and third prize for the raffle. Sharon Bennett quickly offered a large print of the

The ditches had dried up. The fields were ready to plant. Each day I could feel the warmth of spring all around us. With the coming of the longer, sunny days, Mother became a different person. All winter, it was like someone had pulled a window-blind over her face, only occasionally letting in a bit of light. For the most part when the days and nights were dark and dreary, it was like Mother was waiting for something good to happen. And then the winter was over, and
spring was here at last. Audrey and I were sitting alone on the swing in the grape arbour. Buds were just starting to come out, and soon there would be enough leaf-cover to make a haven for us outside where we could eat a meal and get away from the hot sun, or the steaming kitchen. I could hear Mother, through the opened window, singing a wordless tune, and the sounds of pots scraping on the Findlay Oval, and dishes against dishes. A feeling of complete contentment settled over me, but I wondered about Mother's change at the end of winter and the coming of spring. I asked Audrey if she, so much older and so much wiser than I,
noticed it too, or was it just my imagination. My sister paused for a few minutes, as she gathered her thoughts. "It's in the wintertime she misses New York the most," she said. Much of her answer escaped me ... much beyond the reasoning of a five or six-year-old. But I listened anyway. "She feels shut out from the rest of the world out here in Northcote, because the car is in the drive shed up on blocks, it's a long, cold trip into Renfrew in the cutter, so she only goes in on Saturdays to deliver her eggs." She paused again, and I thought that was the end of it. But she went on. "Did you ever notice how she reads and rereads that Philadelphia Inquirer paper that comes in the mail? Well, that connects her with everything going on in the
place she left to come to live here in Northcote. She gets lonesome for her friend Rosie, and I think she feels trapped in the winter ... looking out at so much snow, and she worries about fire burning the house down, and her relatives in Ottawa who can't come out to visit. So, you see, Mary, winter isn't the best time for our Mother." I felt the utmost contentment knowing that winter was behind us, and that Mother would once again be her happy and contented self. Her seeds had come from her order to the Steele-Briggs catalogue, and were starting to sprout in the little square boxes on a table beside the back door. The rolled-up braided rug had been removed from the parlour door where it had been since the first blasts of winter, and we could now sit on the horsehair settee and look at picture albums or read.
Soon the spring housecleaning would begin ... the kitchen curtains washed and starched, and the braided rugs hung on the fence outside and beaten with the broom and rolled up for the summer. The sun had risen overhead and was beating down through the vines of the grape arbour, and I could feel myself dozing off, leaning against my sister. DRIVER CHARGED WITH RACING NEAR ARNPRIOR ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE A Quebec man was charged with racing in McNab/Braeside. On May 4, an officer with the Renfrew OPP was conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 17 in McNab/Braeside township. As a result of a traffic stop Miguel Abrahams, 47, of Saint-Eustache, Que. was issued a summons for race a motor vehicle, excessive speed and will appear in the Ontario
Court of Justice in Renfrew on June 21, 2019. Arnprior and Renfrew OPP officers investigated eight domestic disputes during the week of April 29 to May 5. One male was charged with three counts of assault. The Renfrew detachment investigated 289 calls for service.
