Ottawa police have laid charges in the December 2016 crash that killed two prominent Renfrew citizens. Douglas Foster, 69, and Joan Foster, 66, both of Renfrew, died in a head-on collision on March Road just south of Hwy. 417 near Carp on Sunday, Dec. 4. John Anstie, 24, of Kanata, was charged in March with two counts each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death and criminal negligence causing death. At the time of the crash, he was transported to hospital in serious condition. The couple’s son, Joel Foster, says no one wins with the charges being laid. “He could plead guilty next week or it could go to trial and drag on for many months. Either way, a sense of closure feels elusive. Nothing can undo the damage to both our families and communities.” He questions what Anstie is feeling and would like time to talk to him but knows that is not possible as the case is in front of the courts. “Dialogue would be really helpful right now while the wounds are still fresh, but it won’t be possible until well after the

Does he feel any remorse? What’s his life like? Does he have people who love him? Who are his friends, and has he told them about the accident? How did they react? Is he feeling shame?” Joel asked. “Without dialogue, we’re
left in emotional limbo, not knowing how we feel, or how we ought to feel.” The police kept the family in the loop, on March 28 informing them they were meeting with Anstie that morning and then followed up informing them he was charged. Anstie was released the same day with strict bail conditions. As to the impaired operation of a
motor vehicle causing death charge; it particularly hits homes with Joel, as he is a registered nurse who works at an addiction medicine clinic. “Working with the population I work with and my clients, it helps me understand how addiction leads people to make poor choices,” said Joel. The Fosters are sorely missed in the community.

“Our community has suffered a huge loss as this wonderful couple who just retired gave their all to the folks of the Town of Renfrew for many years,” said Renfrew Coun. Kate Windle following the crash. Doug ran Foster’s Construction for decades and is former fire chief Randy Foster’s brother. Joan, who is originally from Arnprior, operated hair salon Hairitage in Renfrew for 39 years and had just retired. Marcia Foster, along with her brothers Skyler and Joel, still profoundly feel the loss of their parents. “They were both entrepreneurs in the community,” said Marcia. “Over the course of his career, Dad changed the landscape of Renfrew and area. He was well-respected in his line of work.” He worked on many of the area’s most beautiful homes, she said, including the Kenopic house on Albert Street. Her mom gave of herself for the betterment of the community. “She volunteered for hospice and Welcome Wagon and delivered for Meals on Wheels,” said Marcia. “They were really involved in the community, active in their church and loved to travel.” -with files from Tiffany Lepack

Governments, citizens should get used to Ottawa River flooding Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com
Governments and citizens had better get used to extreme weather events such as the recent Ottawa River flooding and learn to adapt, says a well-known scientist from Renfrew county. Ole Hendrickson is with Ottawa River Institute, a group that fosters sustainable communities and ecological integrity in the watershed. The longtime environmental scientist said the link between climate change and flooding that damaged thousands of homes and cottages
from Pembroke to Montreal is indisputable. “Yes, there’s a lot of scientific evidence that links catastrophes with changes in the environment,” Hendrickson said. “We are going to see these events with increasing frequency.” Warm air causes evaporation and can hold more moisture, he explained. That promotes drought. Then when it does rain, it pours. The ground can’t hold the water so droughts return. An aggravating factor is the jet stream. The warming Arctic and constant equatorial temperatures are affecting it. The jet stream is breaking up and becoming more wavy and stall-

ing. The stalling leads to prolonged rainstorms like the recent one that hit at the worst possible time, during spring run-off. “The timing was bad because there were still snow loads in the headwaters and places like that, along with the usual spring rain,” he said. “It’s the most serious spring flooding we’ve seen in our lifetime,” Governments can better adapt to the new reality in a number of ways, he suggested. The County of Renfrew ought to have an expert in charge of water quantity. That person can oversee emergency preparedness and relief efforts. “Governments need to become more engaged,” Hendrickson said. “What happens is that a big event like this comes along and everyone is concerned about the environment, then we go back to our regular lives.” He is sure there are everyday, practical decisions for the expert to make, including manure storage approvals for farmers who don’t want to contaminate waterways. Another idea is to train volunteers in sandbagging and other emergency skills. In Germany entire families are signed on as volunteers with knowledge and talents they put to use during

specific disasters. The army should be given more training and deployment opportunities related to climaterelated catastrophes too, he added. “A little bit of planning goes a long way.” People can adapt by no longer finishing basements, or not having basements at all in floodplains. They should build on higher ground or use stilts, he said, adding that it is time municipalities stopped allowing people to build in floodplain areas. Henderickson said the Liberals are better than the previous Conservative government when it comes to environmental issues, but they have a long way to go yet. Putting an end to subsidies for fossil fuel producers and redirecting that money to sustainable energy initiatives would be a good start. “It’s going to be a lot cheaper in the long run,” he said. Hendrickson was a scientist in the federal government for many years. He said his department made simple, inexpensive suggestions in the 1990s that would have helped tremendously today. They were never really implemented, he said.

Now that the flood waters have begun to recede, the massive task of cleaning up has begun. Horton Township hosted a special meeting on Monday, May 15 to help answer questions and provide information to residents affected by the flood that ravaged homes and cottages along the Ottawa River and other waterways in the region. Council and various ministry representatives were on hand with information and to answer questions. As of press time no meeting had been set for McNab/Braeside residents however they are now offering information packages to residents affected by recent flooding. These packages can be picked up at the township office and contain details regarding disaster recovery assistance as well as information distributed by the Renfrew County District Health Unit. Presentations were made from the municipal advisor from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing Stephen Seller, a Renfrew County District Health Unit representative spoke about wells and septic systems. Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry lands and waters specialist Mary-Alice Lyons was also another speaker. Residents will also able to access information on debris management. In terms of the status of affected residents, Horton CAO/clerk Sue Klatt said township
staff members have been driving around, talking to them and providing flyers for the meeting and other information. “The big message we’re pushing is for people to not take down their walls until the water recedes,” she said. “The people coming in just seem generally pleased with the response from the municipality.” A number of local municipalities qualify for the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians (DRAO) program and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs has issued an information sheet for affected residents in Renfrew County: The program helps victims of natural disasters get back on their feet. It offers financial assistance to help cover emergency expenses, clean-up expenses and costs to repair or replace essential property. The program covers the essentials only. It does not cover costs such as refinishing basement recreation rooms and does not pay for items that are covered through an insurance policy. Secondary residences and cottages are not eligible for assistance. The program was activated in the Renfrew County area in response to flooding in AprilMay 2017. The deadline to submit an application is Sept. 5. For program guidelines, forms, eligibility information and frequently asked questions, visit Ontario.ca/DisasterAssistance If you need assistance determining your eligibility or filling out the application form, call 1-844-780-8925 or email DisasterAssistance@ontario.ca.@ontario.ca.
Townships prepare to clean up after historic flooding The Ottawa River water levels are receding after epic flooding last week, but officials are advising residents to be patient as plans for cleanup are in the works. As of Sunday, May 14 the water was down 50 cm from the peak and dropping about 15 cm per day according to Steve Osipenko, acting commander with County of Renfrew Paramedic Service and community emergency management co-ordinator for Horton and the county. The weekend rain had little or no effect on the Ottawa River levels. In a press release on May 11 The Pembroke District of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry advised residents that a flood warning is still in effect for Renfrew County. The warning is in effect until May 19. A meeting was held in Horton on May 15 to discuss the affects of the flood. In a statement Osipenko had one main message for residents. “Please be patient and leave walls in place. Messaging to the affected residents on a strategy for removal and disposal of the sandbags as well and debris management will be announced this week,” said Osipenko. “It will take a few weeks for the water to drop back to a normal level. Please watch the Horton Township website for next steps.” Plans are also in the works for a meeting for those affected by the flooding in McNab/Braeside, a statement on its Facebook page on May 15 advised residents to take pictures of all damage prior to cleanup and to keep receipts related to cleanup efforts. “I think it is important to try and document as much as possible for future aid requests,” said Geoff Patterson, media relations for the Township of McNab/Braeside. “The process will take a little while. Everyone is excited the water is going down but it is important to have things documented.”
Horton Coun. David Bennett lends a helping hand on May 7 as he rescued dogs Skip and Chomper from a flood victim’s home.

Patterson also gives credit to the McNab/Braeside plan. “You have to trust the emergency system we have in place, it was effective,” said Patterson. “We put the measures in place and dealt with things accordingly.” For more information in McNab/ Braeside visit: mcnabbraeside.com or for Horton visit: hortontownship.ca or search both on Facebook. Both Osipenko and Patterson applaud the community effort. “A huge thank you goes out to all who pitched in and helped the sandbagging effort. Everyone should be proud of what was accomplished,” said Osipenko on the efforts in Horton. “Also please respect the privacy of everyone that’s been affected. They’ve gone through enough and don’t need people touring the damage and driving down private roads that are already damaged.” Some of the damage still being felt is River Road between Mullins Road and Fred’s Lane is completely closed and will hopefully be open later in the week. “They had to dewater the area before they could start to replace the collapsed culvert,” said Osipenko. Patterson says the flooding really showed the Valley spirit. “People really care for each other and appreciate the support of those stepping forward,” said Patterson. “The McNab/Braeside Fire Department really stood out during this crisis.” Osipenko thought Horton Township;s response was well executed by staff in accordance with the Emergency Response Plan that is in place and says the community response was unbelievable. They also learned a few things for the future. “We learned that we need to have a tutorial poster created on how to make sand bags. The volunteers did a great job, but we can’t assume everyone knows the proper way to fill them or how to build strong sandbag wall,” said Osipenko. “They did a great job with a little guidance. We also learned that sometimes the experts’ modelling isn’t an exact science. It was tough to follow a moving target with regards to water levels. It’s better to shoot way past their estimates when preparing.”

McNab/Braeside marks Canada’s 150th with cross township relay
The Township of McNab/Braeside held a special presentation on April 24, to announce its plans to mark Canada’s 150th birthday: a cross-township relay on June 24, pictured at the announcement are: Mayor Tom Peckett, left, with relay committee members: Andy Kalnins, Heather Lang (chair of committee and township councillor), Georgia Quinn, John Brady, Roger Robertson, Karla Blemkie (recreation coordinator for the township). Committee members missing from the photo are: Jason Marshall and Nicci Murray. One of the goals of the relay is to make it into the Guinness World Records for the different modes of transportation in the relay.
Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
It’s a relay like no other. McNab/Braeside is marking Canada’s sesquicentennial with Relay 150 across the township, hoping the efforts make it into the Guinness World Records. The relay starts at Sand Point at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 24 and will finish at the Waba Cottage Museum in White Lake. The announcement was made during a committee meeting on April 24 at the McNab/Braeside municipal office. Heather Lang, township councillor and committee chair, says the event gives them a number of reasons to celebrate. “The McNab/Braeside 150 relay is a chance for us to not only celebrate Canada’s 150th, but also a chance to showcase our township and to engage residents of all ages/ abilities in having a fun day,” said Lang. “We also want to feature different modes of transportation, because we are going for a Guinness World Record based on different modes of transportation. So, we are looking for wacky ideas, we are looking for lots of energy and participation.” Some of the modes of transportation they are hoping for include walking, running, cycling, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, row/paddle boats, skateboards, tractor wheelbarrows, scooters — even snowshoes — all while passing a baton. The baton itself will be created by the Valley Carver, Dub Juby. It will include a GPS tracker, so the route will be captured in real time. “We gave him a set of requirements: it should float and be fairly visible, functionally to hand off, and maybe a strap,” said John Brady, committee member. “We have also given him artistic licence, and we have full confidence in him.” The relay will also be tracked with a drone from 1Point1 Studio, which is based in the township. Lang says it will engage residents by showcasing a number of different things. “The relay will not just engage residents, but it will showcase all of our natural features in the township. It will also highlight some of the clubs and activities that people in the township take part in — dragon boating, playing soccer, Special Olympics, the farmers market,” said Lang. The route will travel the Village of Braeside, down Division Street, across the Pine Grove overpass, to Wellington Park, down White Lake Road to Clay Bank boat launch, to Alexandra Park, to the farmers market, to Burnstown Beach and to the Village of White Lake, before ending at the museum. There will be a big celebration with local entertainment, face-painting, bouncy castle, piper presentation and more. McNab/Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett praised the dedication of the chair and the entire committee. “Coun. Lang and her volunteers have put a lot of hours and a lot of hard work into this to showcase our township with a unique event,” said Peckett. “I hope that people will look at this as an opportunity to come out and celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday and join in all the fun.” The committee is looking for people to volunteer for the relay, which is free to take part in, and cheer people on. Anyone who wants to take part is encouraged to contact the township by June 1 for planning purposes, although everyone is welcome for the event. “We are hoping people will be quite creative,” said Lang. “We hope residents will come out and cheer on the baton carriers. It’s different. What better way to be involved?” They are also looking for volunteers, water and food donations, and items for a time capsule. For more information on the relay or to take part, contact Lang at hlrpublishing@bell.net or recreation@ mcnabbraeside.com.

One in three Canadians will be affected by heart disease or stroke and every seven minutes a Canadian passes away as a result of heart disease and stroke. Those numbers are why the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and local Big Bike events, are so important, said area co-ordina-
tor Owen Brady when he rolled into the Renfrew Fairgrounds at the end of April. “It’s incredibly important to be able to create change by being active and engaged within your community, asking your neighbours for help and being able to help out the foundation as well,” said Brady, congratulating the local fundraisers on their outstanding efforts. “Renfrew’s come to-
gether to be able to support one another. It’s a feel-good story for the town.” Before the local riders boarded the bike for a tour around town, Brady made presentations to three top fundraisers. “The Abercrombie family has done a fantastic level of fundraising for Heart and Stroke,” he said. Nancy Kelly, along with her
parents Marilyn and Jack Abercrombie, received medals at a presentation before the ride. “They’re special medals dedicated to people who go above and beyond for Heart and Stroke Foundation and for Big Bike and raise $1,000 individually,” said Brady. Members of Legion Branch 148 were on hand to make a $400 donation to the cause, as well.
Heart and Stroke Foundation area co-ordinator Owen Brady Brady, left, presented medals to Marilyn and Jack Abercrombie and their daughter Nancy Kelly for being top local fundraisers for the cause.

Home ownership hard to come by There’s no place like home. This phrase is most famously associated with Dorothy in the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” who voiced this sentiment after arriving back in Kansas after her experience with the Yellow Brick Road and the Emerald City. Home is a unique place, as Dorothy observed. Indeed, crooner Bing Crosby tied the lure of home with the appeal of Christmas in his 1943 hit “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” a song which is now considered a Christmas standard, probably because it ties together those two most beloved concepts, home and Christmas. Since pioneer times, a home has always been a most desired goal for Canadians. Early settlers worked endlessly to clear their land so they could build a home there, however modest in the beginning. But whether modest or eventually palatial, having a home has been paramount for generations of Canadians. And why not? A home evokes a special feeling. It’s where you can relax, can feel in control and can be yourself. It’s that small piece of the world where, whether you are labourer or banker, you are in charge. It’s your space, pure and simple. And now this long-time scenario is being
threatened not by decreasing demand or a change in societal attitudes but rather by rising prices. The real estate market in Canada’s two most prominent cities, Vancouver and Toronto, is running rampant. In Toronto, average house prices have reached $916,567, up more than 33 percent from just a year earlier. For these two cities, home ownership has become exclusively for the rich, not a realizable goal for the everyday person. Unfortunately, the province’s reaction to this loss of a dream has been lame and halfbaked. The so-called Fair Housing Plan ushers in a Non-Residential Speculation Tax and the widening of rent control to all rental units. But where is the hope for first-time homebuyers in these markets and, indeed, in all of Canada? It’s fast becoming a situation where there is no place like home because there will be no home. Is this why our ancestors cleared the land and set up their homesteads – so that today’s young families would have no chance to have a home? It is a tragedy in the making and our political leaders seem to have no idea how to save the family home.
From the Renfrew Archives: Formerly the Renfrew Hotel on Albert Street In the early 1850s, Orange Wright, 1821-1863, son of Benjamin Wright, 1790-1851, grandson of Thomas Wright, 17591801, who was a brother of Philemon Wright, founder of Hull, Quebec, came to Renfrew with his wife, Lucy Wyman Wright, and sons, Orange and Marshall. He built the first hotel north of the Bonnechere River and called it the Renfrew Hotel. It provided a large, comfortable, well-equipped place to stay for farmers who came to the mills along the river. It was the first stopping place on the famous Settlement Road, the Opeongo Road, after leaving Farrell’s
Landing on the Ottawa River (Grandview Lodge today) at Castleford, ON. Road construction began in 1854. The many shantymen, farmers, pioneers who patronized the hotel enjoyed the hospitable attentions of host, Orange Wright and Mrs. Wright’s careful housekeeping. Mr. Wright died in 1863, but Mrs. Wright and son, Orange operated the hotel until 1876. The hotel register for the period 18531876 has been carefully preserved by a Renfrew descendant, Mrs. Wm. Smart. With the coming of the railway in 1873 and declining use of the Opeongo Road the hotel had fewer
guests, eventually closed, and later, was sold as a private dwelling. Mr. Orange Wright became Collector of Customs for Renfrew. He died in 1921. At one time the property included the present Orange Lodge on Hincks St. which was a warehouse for the hotel and the property on the corner of Hincks and Albert Sts. Musings from the Mill Museum Kevin McSheffrey
Welcome to your history! You may have already noticed the new town logo which incorporates the McDougall Mill Museum into its name. The building started life as a grist mill, grinding grain into flour. The land where the building sits, was first purchased by Sir Francis Hincks, Premier of Canada from 1851-1854. In 1855, John McDougall who had purchased the land from Hincks for five shillings, built the first stone grist mill. The mill was one of many industries along the Bonnechere River, but is the only building remaining there today. Years later, it became a warehouse for the Renfrew Woolen Mills, but was donated to the town by M.J. Murray in 1963, to serve as a museum. It opened officially in June of 1969, under a committee served by Les Anderson, Jim Ferguson, Howard Haramis, Mrs. K. Pierce, and Mrs. Marie Henderson.
Today the museum houses an eclectic and important collection of Renfrew memorabilia and artifacts. Some of these include: military items dating back to WWI, wedding gowns from 1870-1960, and other types of clothing donated by established Renfrew families, photographic instruments from the Handford collection, children’s dolls/toys, industrial machinery, medical/ dental equipment, lumbering and farming tools, office equipment, kitchen implements, sports memorabilia, toiletries including a hair curler/dryer that looks to have come from a horror movie, Inuit and other native items, furniture, musical items including a functioning player piano which visitors are welcome to try, and a wide range of other historic area photographs, written material, and items made in, or specifically related to Renfrew’s history. In addition, the museum staff sets up educational and
fun activities for children. School classes are most welcome, and the museum staff will be delighted to arrange activities or talk to students about the various collections. The museum is open from the May long weekend until Labour Day, and last season, had 1,500 visitors, coming from all over the world from countries such as New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, Israel, Brazil, Columbia, Mexico, the U.S. and most European countries. The museum gratefully accepts items of historical interest, particularly related to Renfrew. If you haven’t seen the collection (three full floors), it’s worth a visit. And it’s free! The museum is located at the west end of town, across the Bonnechere River, at 65 Arthur Ave. by the O’Brien Park, and a stone’s throw from the historic Swinging Bridge. Plan to visit this summer, as we commemorate our nation’s 150th year. We hope to see you there soon.

THANK YOU for YOUR
YEARS of
SUPPORT. Mister Scissors barber shop is closing and Barry the Barber is finally retiring. Over the years I have listened to many stories from customers about retirement and now I get to experience it first-hand. I have watched many young clients grow up allowing me the privilege of sitting their children, the next generation, in my barber chair. What memories! Thank you sincerely for the opportunity of having your support in the past; and the future being “Barry the Barber’s Retirement” Sincerely Barry Proulx, The Barber Mister Scissors Barber Shop

Busy season for RCI’s RALY students Peggy McLeese Teacher, RCI’s RALY Program
Most of us have been to school and a few of us have been to college, but has anybody ever driven to college in a limousine? That’s what happened to some lucky Renfrew Collegiate Institute students recently, many of whom were from the RALY (Renfrew Alternative Learning for Youth) Program. On Tuesday, April 25, 16 students from across the county started participating in Renfrew County District School Board’s Dual Credit program. The school board has partnered with Algonquin College’s Pembroke Waterfront Campus to offer students a joint college/high school credit. The students have a study period in the mornings before attending an afternoon marketing class. The marketing class will count as a dual credit for both the students’ high school diploma as well as a college credit. The program will run for eight weeks. Students from as far away as Barry’s Bay are attending the program. Because the majority of participants are from Renfrew Collegiate, these students get to ride to the campus in style, in a luxurious white stretch limousine. Their driver is Randy, who greets the students in a top hat and tails. While some of the RALY students were further defining their education at Algonquin, other RALY students stayed behind in order to host a bake sale, as part of their year-long commitment to the WE Organization. Students made cakes, cupcakes,
brownies, cookies and pies. The biggest hit of the sale was the candy kabobs that the RALY class made together. The sale was held over both the RCIS and RCI lunches. Bake-sale helper Anjela Dawe said: “It was fun to do and I was really surprised by the outcome.” In total, the sale raised nearly $250 for the WE Organization. A big thank goes out to RALY bake sale co-ordinators Matthea Clements, Rachel Cloutier, Victoria Case, Anjela Dawe and Hanna Sherlock, as well as RCI’s secretarial staff. Finally, in an already eventful week, the RALY class was also honoured to host public speaker, comedian and social activist Sam Killermann in their classroom. Killermann, the author of two books on gender identity, spent an hour with the group discussing various issues, including gender identity, perseverance and equality. When asked what advice he’d offer the students, Sam replied, “gratitude. Be grateful for all that you have in your life.” At the end of the discussion, Killermann also posed for pictures with the students before leaving to speak at a school-wide assembly in RCI’s Grant Gymnasium. The RALY students were honoured to host Mr. Killerman in the more intimate and relaxed RALY room setting. With starting college, being driven in a limousine for the first time, coordinating a bake sale and hosting a famous author and social justice advocate, it has indeed been a busy week at RCI’s RALY classroom.

Former Ottawa medical officer named to Renfrew county’s interim position The Board of Health for Renfrew County and District Health Unit is pleased to announce that Dr. Robert Cushman has been appointed interim acting medical officer of health as of April 24 for a six-month term. He will be providing part-time services. Dr. Cushman was the senior medical advisor at Health Canada and the director general of the biologics and genetic therapies directorate from 2012-2015. He served as the inaugural CEO of the Champlain Local Health Integration Network from 2005 to 2011. From 1996 to 2005 he was Ottawa’s Medical Officer of Health, where he was instrumental in bringing in smokefree legislation.
Other significant accomplishments at Ottawa Public Health were the establishment of cross sectoral programs to promote healthy early childhood development (Success by Six) and the management of public health emergencies including the ice storm, chemical spills, infectious disease outbreaks, and emerging pathogens (SARS and West Nile). Prior to this role, Dr. Cushman served as the director of public health in the Outaouais (Gatineau). “We extend a warm welcome to Dr. Cushman and look forward to his leadership over the next six months,” said Mayor Janice Visneskie Moore, chair of the Board of Health.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) are reminding motorists that construction season is here and that drivers need to be extra cautious. The MTO are reporting in excess of 200 construction projects underway around the province. These projects consist of highway expansions, bridge replacements and road maintenance, which may result in road closures, reduced lanes, lane realignments and reduced speed limits. Drivers should be prepared for possible delays in these areas and plan accordingly. Drivers should remain vigilant at all times, particularly in construction zones where inattention behind the wheel can lead to tragic consequences. The OPP will be closely monitoring traffic in these areas and actively enforcing the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). Drivers are reminded that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones where workers are present and that driver’s licence/vehicle seizure provisions apply for the offence of speeding under section 172 of the HTA. If you are traveling throughout Ontario, updated information on roads and construction projects can be obtained by calling 511, or by following the MTO on Twitter @511Ontario.

Beta Sigma Phi celebrates 85 years of service Cathy Morris
The Renfrew Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, Epsilon Upsilon recently celebrated Founder’s Day at the Oaks of Cobden Golf Club. Beta Sigma Phi is a non-academic sorority with more than 165,000 members in chapters around the world. Founded in Abilene, Kansas, in 1931, the organization has spread to every state of the United States, to every Canadian province, and to 30 other countries. Each chapter determines its own service projects and participation is always voluntary. Beta Sigma Phi in Renfrew began in 1974, with the first chapter, Theta Omicron receiving its charter in 1976. Currently there are about 12 members who meet regularly in the Epsilon Upsilon chapter. Beta Sigma Phi, Renfrew, has
been involved in many community events in our history, including the Santa Claus parade, curling bonspiels, The Renfrew Rotary Music Festival, Avoca House, the RVH Charity Ball, the Cancer Society Daffodil sales, Bernadette McCann House, school scholarships, the Mitten Tree and many more. At our recent Founder’s Day, chapters from Petawawa, Deep River and Ottawa attended, about 40 members in all. A wonderful supper was catered by Ullrich’s of Pembroke. Our guest speaker was Kristine Hasselsteiner from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. During the afternoon funds were raised, and we were able to present the Heart and Submitted Stroke Foundation with a cheque for $220. Thank you Kristine Hasselsteiner, from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, left, receives a $220 donation from Cathy Morris, vice presito all our sisters who made dent, Renfrew Beta Sigma Phi Chapter, Epsilon Upsilon during their recent Founder’s Day celebration at the Oaks of Cobden this possible! Muskrat Lake swim fundraiser An Algonquin College professor will complete a six-hour swim of Muskrat Lake to increase awareness of the challenges facing the lake and to raise funds for the Muskrat Watershed Council (MWC). Sarah Hall will begin her 16-kilometre swim between 7 and 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 17. She will start in the Muskrat River at the bottom of Meath Hill and finish at the Cobden beach/boat launch area. As co-ordinator of the environmental technician program at Algonquin College Waterfront Campus (Pembroke), Hall and her students have worked closely with the MWC on water testing and installation of controlled tile drainage in the Muskrat Lake watershed. Now she will also bring her love of open water swimming to the task. This is not Hall’s first long-distance swim. In 2014 and 2015, she swam the Northumberland Strait between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. This year she’s decided to bring all that energy and fundraising effort home. She will be accompanied by a safety kayak and two other teammates who will each be swimming with her for a portion of the distance. Local paddlers are encouraged to support Hall and her team as they swim but motor boat drivers are kindly asked to avoid the group.
Hall is looking forward to seeing supporters at the finish line to meet her in the early afternoon. Please stay tuned for details about a waterfront barbecue and a silent auction to be held at the Cobden beach/boat launch area after the swim. Proceeds from the swim go directly to the Muskrat Watershed Council, a volunteer, community-based, not-for-profit organization whose goal is to improve water quality for our local communities by using scientific and local knowledge. The MWC seeks to engage and empower people and communities in identifying and reducing nutrient loading from all sources on the Muskrat Lake Watershed. Please support the MWC by making a donation to Sarah Hall’s swim! Donations can be made at https://www.gofundme.com/swim-forthe-lake For more information about the MWC, please contact MWC chair, Karen Coulas at 613-646-2746, visit our website www.muskratwatershedcouncil.ca or engage with us on Facebook Muskrat Watershed Council - MWC or on Twitter @MuskratWater For more information on the swim, please contact Sarah Hall at halls@algonquincollege. com .

Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski
Monthly Column – May 2017 It seems as often as not, water is an issue when springtime comes to Ontario. We’re either lamenting its shortage or damn near drowning in it. I recall some years when there was next to no snowmelt and very little spring rain. In one of those years, the Bark Lake Reservoir did not fill until the first week of July. As everyone knows, this year has been quite different. While there have been years where we have had flooding on the Ottawa River, other years on the Madawaska River, and yet other years on the Bonnechere River— this is the first year that I have seen extensive flooding on all three. Extensive is probably not the right word, unprecedented would likely be more appropriate. I’ve never seen anything like it in my lifetime, and others who have been around a lot longer than me concur. At the time of writing this column (May 11th), the waters have just begun to recede for the second time. They first peaked a few weeks ago, but unusually high rain across the entire basin of each of the rivers (and their tributaries) turned an improving situation into one that became almost unimaginable for many people. For those affected first by rising water levels, and then flooding, it has consumed much of their lives for well over a month. Unfortunately, they will be dealing with it for some time to come. Even without more heavy rain, it will still take a while for the waters to decline to normal seasonal levels. At that point, people will be able to more accurately and completely assess the damage to their properties. I expect the cost to be significant, but whatever it might be, it cannot take into consideration the toll exacted upon the lives of those affected. They have been in my thoughts and prayers since this crisis began and will continue to be. I am grateful that Bill Mauro, the Minister of Municipal Affairs responded positively to my request— and the requests of our municipal leaders—in activating the Disaster Recovery Assistance Program only four days after I had raised the issue in the Legislature. I am certain this will be of some comfort to those who are wondering what their next steps might be. My office has been extremely busy fielding questions and inquiries from constituents, addressing various aspects of this year’s catastrophic event. I am sure that my municipal partners have been no less busy. Many of their inquiries center around the application process for assistance under the program. My office can continue to help in that regard. There are many questions that need to be answered regarding this spring’s flooding and I plan to convene a meeting that will hopefully accomplish exactly that. But for now, while all affected are still bailing water, we must concentrate on that immediate task. One of the most gratifying results of this whole mess has been witnessing once again, the manifestation of what makes the Valley special: our commitment to each other, neighbours helping one another; those not directly affected are helping those who are – doing what they could to mitigate the effect of Mother Nature’s wrath. Whenever there is a crisis, afterwards it always makes me prouder to say, “I’m from the Valley.” I am sure you feel the same way too. The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, May 18, 2017 29

Back and forth ladies basketball action ROB WARREN
The Reunions used a 10-0 run to take a 15-6 lead over Renfrew Optometrists in ladies basketball play. The Optometrists countered with a 7-0 run of their own, only to be followed by an 8-0 Reunion run. The Optometrists managed to pull within 3 at 25-22, but fell back again and lost 31-24. Stacie Hill paced the Reunions in the second half with 10 points. Mae Donohue scored 10 in the first half and 12 overall. Renfrew Optometrists stayed within a basket or two of the Lumber Jills until the final few minutes. They were forced to gamble and gave up some easy baskets, dropping a 29-22 decision. Jenna Barr had a game-high 10 points.

Meanwhile, the Basket Brawlers’ first lead at 22-21 came on a Mackenzie Nolan basket with four minutes remaining. The Lumber Jills wouldn’t go away and when the buzzer sounded, the teams were deadlocked at 26. Cassidy Resmer scored her fourth trey of the game in overtime to give the Jills a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Janika Liberty added an old-fashioned three (basket and free throw) to complete the 32-26 victory. Natalie Walters topped the Brawlers with 13 points. The Basket Brawlers used a midgame surge to break a 16-16 tie and lead 37-20. They went on to defeat the Frances/Lemke Cooperators 42-32. Natalie Walters led the Brawler
attack with 14 points while Kristan McMahon countered with 12. Midtown Flooring didn’t score a basket in the entire first half, but managed to stay within six points (11-5) of the Cooperators with five free throws (of 12 attempts). It took another six minutes before they finally scored their first basket. The Cooperators kept Midtown to a mere four baskets but also benefitted from 20 missed free throws by Midtown shooters. Kristan McMahon led the Cooperators with 12 points in their 28-21 win. The Midtown Flooring got back to the win column by extending a five point margin over the Reunions at the half to a 34-24 win. Sarah Dougherty hit double digits with 12 points.

We hope we’ve finally put the bad weather behind us. Way too much rain, cold temperatures and even snow have put a damper on the 2017 golf season so far. However, Renfrew Golf Course is very fortunate to have been built on sand and no matter how bad we think we have it, there are a lot of golf courses that still cannot allow carts onto all 18 of their golf holes. Wednesday through Sunday we have had a lot of golfers from other courses visit us and are amazed at how dry we are and how great of shape we are in. And thank you! To the 23 ladies who went to Bluff Point on our Ladies Golf Trip. A great time was had by all and there is talk of having another ladies trip this fall. Even a little one-hour delay at the Canadian border couldn’t stop all the fun we had. Thank you to Canada Customs for letting us back into Canada! Lesson learned! Stone Fence Theatre helps raise $21,000 for valley health care Throughout last fall and into January, Stone Fence Theatre hit the road on a musical tour raising money for local health care. The totals are in and they look healthy.
In total, the 10 performances of High Times at the Heart Institute raised $21,379 for a number of local hospitals and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
The musical, a comedy about aging heart patients and health care, was performed in Eganville, Renfrew, Barry’s Bay, Deep River, Pembroke, Almonte and Ottawa. Each performance

50/50 draws and concessions. In several communities local doctors also made cameo appearances. Two shows in Eganville and a gala dinner in Ottawa raised $6,575 directly for the Heart Institute. This week, playwright and producer Ish Theilheimer met with the directors of those hospital partners to celebrate and discuss possibilities for future partnerships. “We were so pleased with the results of this initiative, I’m hopeful we can do something similar again. We learned a lot and have ideas for how to improve,” he said. The hospital foundation staff that met in Eganville were Toni LavigneConway of St. Frances Valley Healthcare, Hannah MacMillan of Renfrew Victoria Hospital, Ashley Pardy of Deep River District Hospital, Alan Roberts of Almonte General Hospital, and Nancy Warren of Pembroke Regional Hospital. David Rattray, who brought the show to Ottawa through his involvement with the board of the Heart Institute, was unable to attend. “I’m very thankful to the hospitals for welcoming us and the staff who helped with all kinds of details,” said Theilheimer. “I’m also very thankful to our hard-working artists and crew, who deserve a lot of thanks. Touring is a lot of work for them.” Chantal Elie-Sernoskie directed the show, which featured John Haslam, Fran Pinkerton, Shirley Hill, Lesley Sneddon, Peter Brown (also on keys), Evan Burgess (also on guitar), and Theilheimer on percussion. While cast and crew of Stone Fence Theatre are hard at work rehearsing a new show for this summer, Theilheimer hopes this isn’t the last folks will see of High Times at the Heart Institute. “This show was so well received, and it did so much good in our communities, that we hope to do another tour with it later this fall. We’re just looking for new partners in communities we haven’t visited before.”

McNab/Braeside Market set to open May 20 McNab/Braeside Market
McNab/Braeside Market celebrates its opening day on Saturday, May 20. Shake off the rain drops and rejoice in the season of renewed growth. Gardens are a little slow this year but Karen Baker will be ready with fresh rhubarb. Lois and Henry Rosien have lots of perennials and fresh maple syrup. Everyone’s favourites are back, including baking, premium beef cuts, candles, garlic, meadow honey, spring fascinators, natural source personal care products and soaps, home décor items and hooked rugs. This year, hot brunch at the market will include pulled pork or Celtic beef on a bun as well as the popular bacon and egg pie, still at the same low price of $5, including baked beans or fruit salad/coffee or juice. Find the McNab/Braeside Market just off Hwy 17 junction with Calabogie Road across from the fire station on Russett Drive, Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon through to Thanksgiving.
Karen Baker checks to ensure her rhubarb will be ready for the market. Above right, Maryanne and Graham Wall show off spring lambs Spot and Annabel. Right, the bees are busily buzzing to turn this year’s spring flower nectar into honey.

Planting trees
Forest Ontario wants to plant 50 million trees on farmland that is no longer being farmed and Renfrew Golf Course has land deemed suitable. The course and Local to Global (Hannah McMillan and Sam Eady) have agreed to pay the $800 to buy the trees and Opeongo High School students, right, were hired to plant them.

Dip your paddle and Celebrate Our Rivers and Canada’s 150 this summer Bonnechere River Watershed Project
Over the last five years, the Bonnechere River Watershed Project (BRWP) and the Ottawa River Institute (ORI) have partnered with businesses, other organizations and municipalities to provide about 1,000 paddler trips on local waterways to residents and visitors through the Celebrate Our Rivers paddle series. There will be even more opportunity to paddle in 2017, Canada’s 150, with a few of the now 16 paddle events again featuring local food and music. Some of the paddles require advance registration to help with logistics, while others do not. Any profits after expenses to organize and run the series will benefit the lead organizations. So bring your paddle craft (canoe, kayak, paddle board) and join others in Celebrating Canada’s 150th and Our Rivers. The paddle series began in May this year and features four round-trip weekday paddles. The first was slated for the Lower Barron River, and the second of the four was scheduled for May 17 at 9:30 a.m. on the Indian River, putting in at the old Alice Ski Hill. The following week, on May 24, 9:30 a.m., join us for a tour of Constant Creek, putting in at Ferguson Lake on Campground Sideroad. The fourth May paddle is Wednesday, May 31, at 9:30 a.m. on the Muskrat River and Mud Lake, putting in at the Meath Hill boat launch. There is a fee of $10 for each of these paddles, but pre-registration is not required. Saturday, June 3, marks the sixth annual Wilber Lake to Eganville Celebrate Our River Paddle, a Bonnechere Valley Canada 150 event. After the morning registration at the Eganville Arena at 9 a.m., a shuttle will be provided to the put-in at Wilber Lake. For those less adventurous or experienced, a flat-water paddle will leave the boat launch at the Eganville arena. The two-hour Wilber Lake putin paddle will end at the arena where Griffith Farm and Market will be offering delicious local food for lunch to paddlers — and anyone else looking for something different — while taking in some local hand-drumming and musical entertainment at the openmike session. Registration online at www.celebrateourriver.ca, $10 per person in advance, $15 on-site. Under 16 and unwaged free registration. To rent space in a canoe, you must book in advance. For a two-person canoe including gear, contact Don Adams at 613-333-2240 ($20 per person). For a place in a 6-person canoe see celebrateourriver.ca ($25 per person). Sunday, June 11, will see the fifth annual Bonnechere River from Renfrew to the Ottawa River paddle, and First Chute Cleanup and an additional feature, a search for drift cards released in mid-May from the crossing point of the TransCanada pipeline. Start time is 9:30 a.m. at the wastewater treatment facility at the end of Mutual Street in Renfrew. Paddlers will also
have an opportunity to see the site of the 2016 mudslide that dammed the river and flooded upstream to Renfrew (insideottawavalley.com/ news-story/6424415-horton-township-landslide-sends-debris-into-bonnechere-ottawa-rivers). Please bring your own lunch for a shoreline stop after portaging the First Chute and a few minutes of cleanup. The paddle will end around 1 p.m. at the Horton boat launch with a shuttle back to Renfrew provided. Cost $10 per person. To help with logistics planning, please register in advance, info@BonnechereRiver.ca On Saturday, June 17, join the Muskrat Watershed Council for a paddle on Muskrat Lake, beginning at 7:30 a.m. This paddle is in support of “Swim for the Lake” and will be followed by a barbecue at the Cobden boat launch. More information: facebook.com/watershedmuskrat. Participant fee is by donation. Rain date is June 18. On Saturday, June 24, at 9:30 a.m., join a round-trip tour of the beautiful Little Mississippi River, led by the Ottawa River Institute. Put in will be at the Burnt Bridge in Palmer Rapids. There are six paddles in July to participate in! The first is on Saturday, July 1, at 9:30 a.m. on the Bonnechere River from Deacon to Pikwakanagan. The put-in will be at the Deacon boat launch. Registration is required for this paddle, info@bonnechereriver. ca, and cost is $10. The following Wednesday, July 5, marks an evening round-trip paddle on the Bonnechere River from the Renfrew boat launch to the former beach. Cost is $10 and will be led by the Bonnechere River Watershed Project. On Saturday, July 15, there is an extra-special paddle with fiddlers and other musicians joining in for a very unique nature and musical experience, not to be missed. The annual Eganville to Fourth Chute paddle/ fiddle will be followed by a barbecue (optional) and musical entertainment by Valley Heritage Radio at the Bonnechere Caves. Registration begins at 1 p.m. at the Bonnechere Caves and paddlers will be shuttled to the put-in below Eganville for a 2:30 start to a two hour paddle. Cost is $15/person for paddle/music ($10 for music only). Bring a lawn chair and cooler for the après music. Organized by the BRWP and the Bonnechere Caves. To help with logistics, please register in advance via info@BonnechereRiver.ca A mid-week roundtrip paddle takes place Wednesday, July 19, at 9:30 a.m. on the Snake River Marsh. This relatively undiscovered river offers views of flora and fauna not often seen by paddlers. The put-in will be at the Snake River Line, 500m SE of Stoqua Creek Road. Cost is $10/person. On Saturday, July 22, paddle along a picturesque route on the Ottawa River from Portage-du-Fort to Grandview or the Horton boat launch at the mouth of the Bonnechere River. Rendezvous at the Portage-du-Fort

Joining his son Stephen Ruggles (Ern) and brother’s Bill, Bruce and Barry in Heaven. It would be an understatement to say that Bob had the gift of gab and could talk anyone under the table as he quite often did as the Skate Sharpener at the Almonte Arena and playing Clayton Lob Ball. We share many great memories with Poppa at his favourite place their home/cottage on Clayton Lake. Where a Celebration of Life will be held in Irwin Park on Clayton Lake at a later date. “Be careful on that Lake Road.” And “Be good to each other” Love you Dad xo Thanks for spoiling all of us rotten And we will take good care of Mom for you. LETTS, Don (Donnie) – In loving memory of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who left us way too soon one year ago May 17. Eternal joy and memories stay in our hearts forever, Our lives go on without you but nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartaches when someone speaks your name, Silent the tears that flow, Living our lives without you, is the hardest part of all. You were caring, courageous, funny, A larger than life character. The special years will not return when we were all together, But with the love within our hearts, You will walk with us forever. On angels wings you were taken but, In our hearts you will stay. Til we meet again, RIP Love always, Sheila and Family

44 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, May 18, 2017
My sister Audrey was in an unusual talking mood that Saturday morning. There would be no visiting with her friend Iva. Aunt Bertha, Iva’s mother, was into the spring housecleaning, and every hand was needed. We were sitting in the grape arbour, yet to sprout its leaves, swinging in the twoseater, and I thought it was a good time to ask Audrey something that had been on my mind since the nicer weather came around. There was something unusual to me about the date, the 24th of May. It seemed to me, that was almost a magical day, because so much depended on it. My thinking about it started the Sunday before when we were scarcely into the beginning of the month, and I came downstairs ready for church, and wearing my new white gloves. Mother had bought them at the five and dime store for 19 cents a pair, which to me was a princely price to pay, but I had outgrown the hand-me-down ones Audrey had worn before me. As soon as mother saw them on me, she said I would have to take them off, because you couldn’t wear white gloves until after the 24th of May. That was news to me, but when I asked mother why, she said ‘just because,’ which was supposed to satisfy me, but didn’t. And even though it was as hot as blazes out, mother came out of the bedroom in her felt hat with the cluster of cherries on the crown. I thought it was high time she put on the straw hat with the satin ribbon on it that Aunt Lilly had brought her from Ottawa, but according to my sister Audrey, you just couldn’t wear a summer hat until after the 24th of May. Well, there it was again, that 24th of May business. Father said an early spring meant an early summer, and he was right, because even though it was May, it was as hot as blazes, and mother was already pulling the blinds down in the house after breakfast, and keeping
everything locked up tight during the day. And that meant the Bonnechere River was warmed up too. Of course, my three brothers were dying to have a dip after school, and on Saturdays after chores. But mother said there would be no swimming in the Bonnechere until after the 24th of May! And it didn’t matter how hot it got! Well, this was all very confusing to me. The payoff came when mother’s little wood boxes of flowers had sprouted and to me, looked like they were ready to blossom, and I was sure she would be out planting them in the beds father had gotten ready. Well, there it was again: there would be no planting of flowers until after the 24th of May! And so that Saturday sitting in the swing with my sister Audrey, I asked her again, what was so special about the 24th of May, when, it seemed to me, the entire world revolved around that day. Audrey pursed her lips and went deep into thought. She said she was pretty sure it had to do with the old woman in Renfrew who told fortunes. She said she thought she had put a curse on the day. I asked her what a curse had to do with wearing white gloves, a straw hat, or swimming in the Bonnechere, and how she could possibly send a curse all the way out to Northcote. My sister Audrey thought for the longest minute, and then said that some things just couldn’t be explained, and for our own good we’d better accept them, or we could get into serious trouble. With no money, the Depression all around us, depending on a rich aunt from Regina for the very clothes on our backs, and many other things beyond our control, I figured I would just have to accept Audrey’s explanation because more trouble was something we didn’t need. After all, wasn’t she in Senior Fourth and the smartest girl at the Northcote School? And if anyone knew the answer to the mystery of the 24th of May, it would be my sister Audrey.
Interesting talk at bridge club Though it was a dreary day, the Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club still had 11-and-a-half tables of players turn out for the May 10 contest. Wayne Daze started the afternoon off as he presented an interesting Chalk Talk. He stressed that it is important to listen not only to your partner, but to listen to your opponents as well. Their bids should provide very good clues as to the strength of their hands and the cards they are likely to hold. On this day, the cards seemed to be very evenly distributed and only on Board #25 were any slam contracts even attempted. On that board, though there were five slams bid,
only one pair managed to bring their slam contract home successfully. Well played, Andy Sklepowicz and Kevin McSheffrey! Congratulations to the May 10 winners: North – South: 1: Phillippa Baron - Nancy Cavanagh 2: Marg MacDonald - Brenda MacPhee 3: Ruth Grant - Mary McCann East – West: 1: Barb Haydock - Brian Haydock 2: Linda Dent - Jocelyne Tetrault 3: Margie Scheunemen - Audrey Copeland

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, as long as you keep trying your best, you will come out on top. Now you just have to have a little more confidence in yourself. Choose a motivational song as your anthem.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, even if you stumble, you will have an opportunity to regain your footing. Do not shy away from taking a few chances here and there. You can handle what’s in store.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Talk about big plans with someone close to you, Sagittarius. This person might have some wise words to share, or may just be the sounding board you need right now.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Try something new, Taurus. What is the worst that can happen? If you find you do not like the activity, then check it off your list and embrace a new opportunity.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 This may be one of those weeks when nothing seems to bother you, Virgo. The bad stuff just rolls off your back, and everything seems to keep you smiling.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Mistakes are a key to learning, Capricorn. Don’t let minor hiccups derail you from the larger plan. Otherwise, your momentum may get seriously stalled.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, think about reconnecting with an old flame. Even if the connection is purely platonic, the stroll down Memory Lane might be good for you.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, weigh all of your options before making a major commitment. Once you move forward, you may not have much room to turn things around.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Confidence is the key to just about anything, Aquarius. This week you have it in abundance. At this point, you can probably sell ice to eskimos, so put your luck to good use.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, this week may be a turning point for you in your life. Although you feel ready for the changes that are in store, you may have to adapt a bit more once they’re here.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, someone is trying to tell you something but you may not be receiving the message just yet. Settle in and the message may dawn on you at a later time.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 A career move may be imminent and it could be worrying you, Pisces. After the first few days, things will be smooth sailing.
