Alarm bells were sounded last Monday, May 13, after the OPP received details about an attempted abduction of a 10-year-old student walking near Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School. The OPP was asking for assistance to identify a man said to be in his 20s. But the OPP issued a news release May 15 that says its investigation shows the attempted abduction never occurred. “The incident did not occur. There is no guy (who attempted a kidnapping),” said Const. Janice Sawbridge, the community services officer for the Renfrewdetachmetn of the OPP. She said unsubstantiated reports do happen from time to time. “Itʼs rare, but they occasionally happen, whether itʼs someone reporting they were assaulted (and werenʼt) or something was stolen (and wasnʼt),” said Const. Sawbridge. “Itʼs important the public knows we take reports seriously, and there is the potential for charges in some of these incidents.” In this case, no charges will be laid, said Sawbridge. The initial report indicated a male, near Wendyʼs Restaurant at the north end of town, attempted to lure a child with candy and to grab her. The report also said she kicked the alleged perpetrator and ran away. Meanwhile, the OPP says it is always good for parents to review personal safety practices with their children. The OPPʼs website of www.opp.ca contains a number of useful resources that families can use to facilitate that discussion.
