RENFREW COUNCIL DIVIDED ON MA-TE-WAY EXPANSION JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com The Ma-Te-Way expansion remains a heated topic at Renfrew council.

Members of council discussed the project in length at a Committee of the Whole Meeting on May 14.

Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Hill presented an updated budget and schedule, crunching numbers so there is a zero per cent rise in new taxation.

Hill says the facility will boast an additional NHL size ice pad, a six-foot-wide walking track, a full-size gym, a fitness centre, a sports museum, three multi-purpose rooms, administrative offices and change rooms as well as washrooms.

The Town of Renfrew has set aside $200,000 annually in their capital budget to address facility needs, with another $65,000 from the Outdoor Rink Reserve that can be used toward the expansion.

Coun. Sandi Heins mentioned council would pass the budget, which includes a six per cent levy hike, the following week, but Hill assured her the expansion would remain unaffected

He highlighted the need for an expanded facility, using the Miss Teen Ontario East Pageant at the Renfrew Recreation Centre as an example; many programs were cancelled that weekend including karate, volleyball and gentle exercise. He further iterated that the military made use of the cement surface at Ma-Te-Way while helping

with flooding, which in turn caused Hike for Hospice to be moved outside.

"These two events, along with others in the past, justify an expansion to the activity centre," Sidney said. "We have already waited long enough to make this a reality."

The project returns to the council table for a vote on May 28.

STORY BEHIND THE STORY:

As early as November 2016, plans were made to add a second ice pad and make a number of other improvements to the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre.

The expansion was put on hold last July due to budget issues.

The Renfrew Mercury has been following the issue from the start and our reporter was on hand for a recent update on the project.

Trinity-St. Andrew's became an Affirming Ministry within the United Church of Canada in the fall of 2018. The town recognized the distinction with the presentation of a certificate of congratulations.

"It's time for the Town of Renfrew to get behind an event like this," Coun. Tom

Sidney said. "This shows that it's not only okay to be who you are but also to show that the Town of Renfrew is also welcoming, accepting and unbiased as far as choices and decisions on lifestyles and just being yourself."

Renfrew council chambers was filled with firefighters May 14 to pay tribute to one of their own who recently achieved firstclass status.

The Renfrew Fire Department welcomed Jesse Gale as the newest member of first-class firefighters.

Fire Chief Kevin Welsh was on hand to recognize the achievement.

This title comes after a five-year process: two years on probation followed by a year each as fourth, third and second classes. Advancement is based on annual reports, and is evaluated through written testing, job-related skills testing and knowledge of the Town of Renfrew.

"This process may be the pinnacle of an individu-

al's career, but it is the original target to meet that first-class standard," Welsh said as he introduced Gale with "the greatest pleasure, pride and honour."

Coun. Tom Sidney, a member of the fire committee, congratulated Gale on this achievement, noting he was proud to see both teamwork and support coming forward from fellow firefighters.

Gale expressed his thanks.

"I just want to thank my family for the last five years of going through all this at work," he said. "I'd also like to thank everyone I work with for helping me with the testing and just giving me your knowledge."

Mayor Don Eady also congratulated Gale, saying the five-year accomplishment "wasn't an overnight trip" for him.

On May 7, in honour of Education Week and the 50th anniversary of the Renfrew County District School Board, students and staff of Admaston Public School were part of a daylong visit to the past as they visited the SS No. 2 One Room Schoolhouse in Admaston.

The day was a community effort put together by the staff of Admaston, designed to meet curriculum expectations and connect the students to their past.

Students dressed in 1900 period costumes, boarded their wagons at Admaston school and set off on their adventure to the schoolhouse, which is now owned by the Balsam Hill Women's Institute.

As the students rode through the countryside, drones, which were controlled by both Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) media students and Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) board staff, buzzed through the air filming the expedition.

This was the beginning of the day's process of documenting this adventure.

At the schoolhouse, former SS No. 2 students and RCDSB trustees Susan Humphries, Bryon Morris and Dave Shields joined the young people for lemonade and apples, and shared their own stories and recollections of their school days.

Inside, former teachers, Pauline Hughes and Lynn Clelland, recreated a day for the students to experience life as a 1900s student.

The Women's Institute purchased the schoolhouse from the RCDSB in 1966 when the new Admaston school was built. For years Hughes and Clelland offered the day to schools as part of their Grade 3 curriculum. They retired a couple of years ago from

providing this experience, but they opened up the opportunity once again for the Admaston Public School students as part of the 50th celebration. Their hope is that once the film is produced it may inspire someone to take on the role of the one-room school teachers so they may be able to open their doors to other schools again.

At the end of the day, with the help of board technology, the students interviewed 105-year-old former teacher and student of SS No. 2, Mary Plaunt, who resides at Groves Park in Renfrew.

Students of RCI will now be taking the footage of the day to create a short film as part of their media studies.

Renfrew County decided April 24 to plunge ahead with buying five new $250,000 ambulances and planning a new paramedic headquarters in Pembroke. The decision was made despite concerns the future of the countyrun paramedic service is in doubt with the province's surprise announcement it is restructuring Ontario's 59 ambulance services into 10 within the next two years.

Prior to county council's April meeting, its health committee held an "emergency" session and recommended staff proceed with the ambulance purchase and design and construction of the paramedic base.

Committee members felt that

despite all the unknowns swirling about the province's ambulance services, operations couldn't be put on hold, especially with several ambulances approaching 300,000 kilometres. Besides, moving ahead with the new vehicles and base would be a morale-building act of support for their paramedics as well as showing the province "how important we feel the service is," members agreed.

The health committee also successfully recommended the county participate in the future consultations the provincial government has promised on health care including the ambulance service changes, arguing "forcefully" on behalf of rural services.

As well, a letter is being written to the premier and health minister, with copies to MPPs and municipalities, saying since it took over the service in 2001, Renfrew County has developed an emergency services program that "responds directly and efficiently to our unique local community needs." It goes on to point

out the Renfrew and Pembroke fund 50 per cent of the service and have made more than $10 million in infrastructure investments.

At the health committee meeting, county chief administrative officer Paul Moreau asked members whether they should cut back the ambulance purchase to less than four (the fifth one is replacing a vehicle damaged in a collision) and put plans for the new station on hold. "We're trying to balance fiscal prudence with the need for new ambulances," he said.

Committee chair Michael Donohue decried the lack of information about the "short-sighted" ambulance changes, charging they seemed to be "an afterthought in the budget." The province is also showing an "incredible disregard for its municipal funding partners," he said.

Noting there would be consequences if the aging ambulances aren't replaced, the Admaston/ Bromley mayor said: "I think we stay the course." If the service is taken over by another entity, "we

Horton Mayor Dave Bennett agreed, saying he couldn't see the province not giving Renfrew County residents anything for their assets. "I don't see any reason to stop the direction we're going," he said.

In its report to county council,

the committee listed a long list of concerns about the potential effects of restructuring from loss of rural service and stress on staff to "complete lack of consultation." The report also noted there is "significant concern that it is the intention of this government to privatize this critical service."

"It's an incredibly disruptive move that is especially detrimental to rural Ontario," said Donohue. He noted past ambulance off-loading concerns in Ottawa does not give county representatives confidence the rural service won't be diminished in the restructuring.

He noted the "grave concern" also extends to other cuts to public health and "our beautiful" community libraries. "But we can buy alcohol at 9 a.m."

Moreau said it has been "quite evident" during the recent flooding where emergency services have been "front and centre" that the paramedic service has developed "unique tools" that Renfrew County "fears we could lose" in a restructuring.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY MA-TE-WAY LAND SHOULD BE KEPT FOR FUTURE RECREATION To the editor: A letter to Renfrew council: Recently your economic development committee led by reeve Peter Emon forwarded a report to town council suggesting that the town consider selling "surplus property" to help finance economic development and asset renewal.

As part of that report it was suggested that a portion of Ma-Te-Way Park be developed and sold for residential development.

In the mid 1970s a group of forward thinking residents embarked on a fundraising mission to raise enough money to purchase the land now known as MaTe-Way Park. At that time, this group of citizens raised $147,000 to purchase this 144-acre parcel of land and donated it to the then Renfrew Recreation Commission.

No municipal tax dollars were involved in this purchase.

The purpose of this undertaking was to ensure

that Renfrew would have a major recreation facility to accommodate the present and future recreational needs of our community.

Since that time approximately 100 acres has been utilized in the development of various recreational facilities such as: the Ma-TeWay Activity Centre, two soccer fields, a football/ track field, four tennis courts, three ball diamonds, a BMX track, a dog park, a nature trail through the woods, a splash pad, part of the Millennium Trail, four parking lots, the Henry Eady maintenance building, the Kallies Pavilion, playground equipment, a skate board facility, a toboggan hill and a dry camping facility for festivals. All of this in a short span of 50 years.

This land may appear to be surplus at the moment, but I encourage you to put on your forward thinking caps and think about what the next 50 years might bring. If you sell this land now, you will never have it available for recreational developments in the future. Our ancestors had

lots of foresight back in the 1970s.

This land was purchased for the recreational needs of the past, present and future residents of Renfrew and should remain as part of our major recreational park. Once sold this land will never be available for future recreational developments.

This land was purchased by the residents for the residents and should remain available for all the present and future residents of our community.

A GOOD AND BAD YEAR FOR BIRDS AT POINT PELEE MICHAEL RUNTZ RECOUNTS A RECENT EXPEDITION MICHAEL RUNTZ Column

Every spring hundreds of thousands of birds pass through Point Pelee National Park during their migration north, a remarkable journey that often begins in South America. This tiny park, the southernmost point of mainland Canada, attracts an equally impressive number of birders from around the world. Digital photography has had a visible effect on the park; cameras now compete with binoculars as the most popular form of accessory.

I've been visiting this world-famous park for fifty years. While Pelee has always been famous for birds, the number of people visiting it has risen exponentially, while sadly the number of birds arriving each spring has spiralled downwards.

Like many birders, I enjoy going to Pelee not only to see birds but also to reunite with friends from distant regions. The social aspect is particularly enjoyable during days when birds are hard to find. And there are such days. Most songbirds migrate at night, travelling between 300 and 500 kilometres before landing to refuel.

When winds are favourable and rain or heavy cloud is absent, many birds continue flying north without stopping at Pelee. However, if birds meet inclement weather during the night, they put down on the near-

Because Pelee is the first mainland encountered after crossing Lake Erie, thousands of birds descend on the point during those conditions.

I arrived at Pelee May 10. The previous day was one of those rare times when the trees were filled

with songbirds. Through the day I met friends who gave the same report: "It was the best day I've seen in decades!"

I missed the spectacle by a mere day but many of the birds were still present. Sadly for the birds, the cold, wet weather made

insects impossible to find in the trees, which still hadn't leafed out due to the cooling effect of Lake Erie.

They were forced to forage next to the ground, struggling to replenish spent body fat and fend off the cold. Many species normally shy and retiring were foraging quite literally underfoot.

Pelee lies on two major migration routes: the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways. During the migration push, southern birds often get caught up in the movement and wander well north of their normal range. These strays light up the eyes of serious birders and are a major reason they go to Pelee. On Friday morning a swallow-tailed kite from Florida realized its mistake and after making a flight around the park, headed back due south. This spectacular hawk, which looks like a giant swallow, flew directly over my head before it drifted due south over Lake Erie. My eyes lit up!

I saw more than 30 species of warblers during my four-day visit to Pelee. Other birds that, like the kite, overshot their destination included yellow-throated and Kentucky warblers.

While I revelled in seeing such a wonderful variety of birds, some quite rare, others quite beautiful, I was also saddened by the poor condition that many appeared to be in.

For what might be good for birders and photographers in Pelee is not necessarily good for the birds.

Action Sports Park Development class challenge The best part of our monthly board meeting is a presentation by students.

At our April board meeting, four students from Walter Zadow Public School, along with their teacher Lisa Blokland, brought their scale model of a skateboard-cycle park.

The class of 28 students

worked on this challenge as part of an initiative with the Action Sport Park Development program at Algonquin College.

The students were very proud of their work, which included learning how to develop a model to scale and using lots of math skills to prepare ramps, learn how to use the appropriate software and the 3D printer. It was obvious that lots of collaboration, problem-solving, co-operation and teamwork happened within the classroom. All outcomes were truly remarkable examples of the creativity and innovation happening in our district.

TECH X 3.0 On April 17, the excitement level was very high at this year's robotic competition held at Fellowes High School. Over 200 students from 19 schools in our district came together to demonstrate the strength and

abilities of the robots that their school teams had worked on over the past several months.

It was amazing to see what these students were able to build and program under the excellent direction of their teachers. This is a great example of problem-solving, design-thinking, collaboration and communication through coding, robotics and friendly competition.

Student trustee elections We have two student trustees on our board who bring forward the student voice. On April 25, our new trustee was elected for his two-year term by his peers, and we look forward to welcoming Hudson Arbour from Mackenzie High School. He will be replacing our outgoing trustee Sean McCloskey from Madawaska Valley District High School and will join

the board of trustees beginning with the August board meeting.

Congratulations to Hudson, as well as the other three candidates who did an excellent job with their presentations. In fact, there was a tie vote, so an additional vote had to be taken. Hudson will be joining our current student trustee Sam Abbott from Valour JK-12 School in Petawawa.

Concerns about the impacts of cuts to education In mid-March, Minister of Education Lisa Thompson announced a number of proposed changes to the education system. Even though we do not, as yet, have our final funding details for the next school year, there are a number of proposals that the board of trustees is concerned about. Although there are several issues, I will briefly

describe two of them here.

The first item is the proposed increase of the average class size at the secondary level, from 22 students to 28, over four years. At first glance, this seems easy to implement, but in smaller schools such as ours, this will greatly impact our ability to offer an array of course options for a wide range of student needs and interests. Some of our courses have a cap on numbers (e.g. for safety reasons), which will result in much higher numbers in other courses.

The second area of concern is the requirement to complete four mandatory e-learning courses in order to graduate. We know that there are many locations in the district that do not have reliable internet service, and we also know that elearning is not the best method of learning for many students.

The ministry is asking for input with regards to the proposed increase to the average class size, as well as hiring practices.

DEWEY'S LAST PATIENT ALSO HIS FIRST JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com It came full circle for Dr. Malcolm Dewey when he officially retired last month after 45 years of faithfully looking after the eye health of thousands of Renfrew and area residents.

His first Renfrew patient was also his last.

Dr. Dewey has been a practicing optometrist since 1974 when he came to Renfrew to join the practice of Dr. Vern Prentice Sr. His first patient that June was Myles Bailey, who worked as a technician at the eye clinic at 111 Raglan St. near where Metro is now.

So when Dr. Dewey worked his final day April 16 at the Renfrew Eye Clinic, staff decided it would be fitting to book in Bailey as his last patient.

Dr. Dewey, who grew up in Smiths Falls where his father was a well-known hockey player, graduated in optometry at the University of Waterloo before coming to Renfrew.

He and Dr. John Humphries have been partners in the business since 1978 and have seen many changes, including a move and expansion 20 years ago to more spacious quarters at 281 Raglan St. Eye care has been transformed with new technology and techniques in the 45 years Dr. Dewey has been in the business.

"It's fabulous," he said, noting new ways to diagnose and treat eye disease have been made possible by modern technology, specialized drug therapy and more precise instrumentation.

"It's unbelievable what we can do to treat patients," he said, noting evolving technology is allowing optometrists to provide more primary eye care for people.

He said he is confident the Renfrew Eye Clinic is in good hands with Dr. Humphries, Dr. Morgan Welburn and Dr. Alexandra Ann Rowley and the five other staff members.

"They are all highly trained, knowledgeable and attentive," he said. "They really are caring people."

As for his plans, Dr. Dewey will be enjoying more cycling, golfing and wood-working (he makes cabinets as a hobby) at his retirement home in the Big Rideau, as well as touring in his Corvette. He won't be a stranger to his many Renfrew friends as he'll be back for Renfrew Rotary meetings and golfing dates.

In congratulating him on his retirement, his staff praised him for spending "45 years of your life helping others and having the deepest compassion and care for your patients." His renowned sense of humour and big smile will be missed at the office, they said.

RENFREW PAIR FACES SEVERAL DRUG CHARGES DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com Two people from Renfrew are facing numerous drug charges.

On May 6, acting on information of persons in possession of a controlled substance members of the Community Street Crime Unit, located the vehicle the persons were travelling in and conducted a traffic stop. As a result of the investigation; Tyler Moore, 37, of Renfrew, has been charged with: • fail to comply with probation order; • possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking suspected to be cocaine; • possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000; • possession of a schedule one substance suspected to be methamphetamine;

• and, possession of illicit cannabis.

Further Marissa Schoenfeldt, 31, of Renfrew, has been charged with: • three counts of fail to comply with probation; • three counts of fail to comply with recognizance; • possession of illicit cannabis; • possession of a schedule one substance suspected to be methamphetamine; • possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000; • and, possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking, suspected to be cocaine.

The parties were held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on May 7.

Officers investigated 17 domestic disputes during the past week.

As a result of the investigation, Trevor Burnette, 36, and Joelle Desjardins, 31, both from McNab/ Braeside, have been charged with cultivate, propagate or harvest more than four cannabis plants.

They were released on a promise to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Renfrew on June 19.

RENFREW KINGBURGER'S BREASTWICH AND POUTINE A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com Growing up in the small town of Renfrew, I have a lot of nostalgic memories, a fair chunk of them involving Odi’s Kingburger in Renfrew.

My default order whenever going there is the poutine, one of the best items they have to offer and also one of the best I’ve had at any fast food joint.

This trip I decided, in the name of discovery, to try something different.

That is what led me to the Breastwich.

The staff members working were very understanding and courteous, as I had needed a minute to decide what I would order. I even-

tually decided on the Breastwich combo, no tomato, with poutine instead of fries (old habits die hard).

Having countless past experiences with the poutine, I knew what I was expecting on that front. However, I was going into the journey of eating my sandwich with an open and fresh mind.

The Breastwich comes with lettuce, tomato and mayo.

The poutine was made up of ripple-cut fries, shredded cheese scattered throughout the entirety of the fries and topped up with gravy. Now I generally judge the overall validity of a poutine on whether or not the gravy is hot enough to melt the cheese onto the

fries. This was most certainly the case for the Odi’s brand.

The taste of both items was out of this world. The Breastwich had a great crunch factor, and was just hot enough to give a satisfying mouth feel. The poutine had a nice cheese-to-gravyto-fry ratio. Just watching the cheese melt off my fork put a smile on my face. The fries themselves had a crispy crunch to them, a plus in my books.

Part of the journey is the end, and this particular adventure ended with a full belly and an almost euphoric sensation. I was looking to try something new and came out with another possible regular order at the establishment.

ARNPRIOR DRAGON BOAT CLUB IS LOOKING FOR NEW PADDLERS SUSAN BURNS-MCINTYRE Looking for a different summer sport? Why not try dragon boat paddling!

Imagine 20 paddlers in a sleek narrow boat. The drummer (coach) calls to take it away and instantly each paddler moves in uni-

son. The boat lifts and surges forward with each stroke. It is not just about the race; it is about the challenge; it is about being in the water with friends!

The Club has three crews paddling again this season – a competitive crew which is recruiting

fit individuals who paddle three times a week – Monday and Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. and Sunday mornings; and compete in about four festivals each season.

If you simply love being out on the water, having fun and getting a good, allround work out, there are

two recreational crews that will start paddling as soon as the docks are in place at the Arnprior Marina. One crew paddles Monday and Wednesday from 6-7 p.m. and the other crew paddles Tuesday and Thursday from 7-8 p.m.

The cost to join for the season is $150 and crews usually paddle until Thanksgiving. Life jackets

and paddles are provided by the Club and no experience is required. If you simply wish to come out and try paddling, the first session is free and it will be $10 per session there after (these fees will be applied to your membership if you decide to join).

The Club is holding a “Meet and Greet” on May 26 from 6-8 p.m. in the

lounge at the Arnprior Curling Club. Everyone is welcome to join us.

With sadness we announce that Terry passed away peacefully at Providence Care in Kingston on Monday morning, May 13, 2019.

Terrence René Leclaire, formerly of Arnprior was 71. Beloved son of the late René and Bernadette (nee Frappier) Leclaire. Special nephew of Rita Frappier of Kingston with whom Terry resided for the past 20 years.

Dear brother of Bruce (late Cindy) of Pembroke; Greg (Sherry Steves) of Castleford; Steve “Boots” of Arnprior; Saundra MacHardy (James) of Galetta and Susan Sawyer (Ed) of Arnprior. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Terry’s final care has been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior. A family graveside service and interment will take place at St. Alexander’s Parish Cemetery, Sand Point. In memory of Terry, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.

Predeceased by her parents, Ollie and Virginia (nee Snider) McCullough; a sister, Carol Renaud (late Phillip) as well as 2 brothers, Harvey and Keith McCullough. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. A woman of strong character and conviction, Maizie enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. A fierce card player, she seldom if ever passed up an opportunity to play a hand of euchre. Her quick wit and keen sense of humour will be remembered by many. Richard Norman Bertram Culligan, aged 57 and one heck of a man, tragically and unexpectedly passed away May 11, 2019 surrounded by friends who loved him and who he loved in return. Rick was a fiercely loved husband, father, son, Papou (grandpa), brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend, among many other roles. Rick was a truly genuine and caring man who touched the lives of all who knew him. Rick is survived by his beloved wife, Laura, his children, Samantha, Taylor, son-in-law, Dominik, grandson, Sawyer; his parents, Michael and Heather; sisters, Cindy (Allan) & Elaine; brother-in-law, Andy (Charlene), sister-in-law, Cathy (Perry) and Alex. Also survived by his nephews & nieces, Devon (Gayle), Mitchell (Kaylea), Jordan (Rebecca), Jamieson (Nicole), Shelby, Braeden, Breanna and Michael, Alex (Amanda) and the late Fraser. Marjorie Jean (McArthur) On May 14, 2019 Marjorie Jean Johnston (McArthur) passed away peacefully at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital at the age of 92.

She is survived by her beloved husband Murray Johnston and is predeceased by her parents William and Eva (Lindsay) McArthur, as well as her two sisters Ruby McArthur and Eva May (Roy) McIntyre. Marjorie’s love of horses, the lake and farm life always kept her young at heart. JOHN CARTER Renfrew's M.J. Blimkie had a good reason to enjoy Frank Cosentino's book on the Flying Fathers.

His exploits with the famous hockey-playing priests are included in the book by the Eganville author. In Burnstown Publishing House's 'Holy Hockey: The Story of Canada's Flying Fathers', Cosentino has given 'Brother' M.J. a chance to share his recollections about playing with the Flying Fathers from 1976 to 2006. Like Cosentino, a former Canadian Football League quarterback, Blimkie also played football.

However, that was in the Sudbury and Sturgeon Falls area.

In his home town of Renfrew Blimkie is better known for his love of hockey, playing well into his 70s with a variety of teams, including the Millionaires, as well as countless benefit games. So it's no wonder he had an affinity for playing with the Flying Fathers, who have raised more than $4 million for charity.

In Cosentino's book, where he is introduced as a "noted athlete," Blimkie explains that after many years playing Senior

A hockey, he was approached

by Father Brady McNamara to see if he'd suit up with the Flying Fathers. He joined them for a game in Timmins in January 1976 and enjoyed it so much he continued playing with them for the next 30 years.

Playing with such "a great bunch of guys" provided Blimkie with many great times and the chance to make many new friends as well as re-connect with several old ones. "I enjoyed it all; saw a lot of things I otherwise would never have seen, played against a lot of

pros in big rinks and large crowds," he wrote.

He says he thoroughly enjoyed Holy Hockey, noting it brought back many good memories.

Cosentino, who has written and co-authored 18 books including a history of the Renfrew Millionaires, was approached by Father Pat Blake and Father Grant Neville to write a book on the Flying Fathers. Surprisingly, considering their renown built up since they began entertaining fans and raising money for charity

in 1964 in North Bay, their story had never been the subject of a book.

The Fathers have gone on to play close to 1,000 games all across Canada, into the U.S. and even in Europe (where they had an audience with the Pope).

Holy Hockey, which was published in 2018, is available through Burnstown Publishing House and most Valley stores where books are sold. It retails for $25 and in the spirit of the Flying Fathers, part of the proceeds go to charity.

EMERSON WAS A PUSHOVER WHEN SICKNESS HIT MOTHER HAD THE PERFECT CURE FOR BOIL, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

My brother Emerson, I thought was afraid of nothing. He was just about the biggest boy at the North-

cote School too, which made him a force to be reckoned with. But in spite of his size, he was a real coward when it came to sickness.

Well, the day he discovered a little pimple on the back of his neck that itched, he was convinced he was

full of some mysterious poison put there by some germ that had never been heard of in Renfrew County!

Mother said it was a simple pimple, and he was to stop putting sugar on just about everything that went into his mouth. She said she wouldn't be surprised if the pimple was gone by morning. Emerson was just as sure it would develop into something that would need

BONNECHERE MANOR IN RENFREW REACHES GOAL FOR NEW BEDS MICHAEL BARBER With the presentation of a $30,000 cheque from the Bonnechere Manor Foundation to the home, along with a commitment of another $28,000 in July, Bonnechere Manor has achieved its long-term goal of replacing 100 per cent of the residents’ beds.

This new “high/low” bed model was identified as a priority as they allow the bed to be lowered very close to the floor — reducing the likelihood that a resident would sustain injuries getting out of bed. At the same time, this “state of

the art” model still allows the bed to be kept at a normal height or even raised higher when providing care — making it safer for staff.

At a total cost of almost $500,000, this project was a longer-range target. However, with support from the foundation and the County of Renfrew/City of Pembroke, the home will meet this goal in July 2019.

Don Goulet, chair of the Bonnechere Manor Foundation, emphasized that the foundations’ ability to make these substantial donations to the home is only possible through the many

local businesses and community-minded individuals who supported the many fundraisers that have been held since 2016.

“We can’t thank the Renfrew and area community enough — it is only through your support of the manor that we have had successful fundraisers that allow us to fulfil this important commitment,” Goulet said.

Warden Jennifer Murphy added that the success of the Bonnechere Manor Foundation allows the County of Renfrew/City of Pembroke to focus their capital funding on maintaining and enhancing the manor’s more basic requirements of the 24-yearold facility, such as the ongoing roof and flooring replacement projects.

That night, from the back bedroom, I heard him tell Everett that it would be a frosty day in May before he would ever again own up to having a boil anywhere on his body. He said the cure was far worse than the disease! Everett agreed.

Mother said it was nothing, but to make him feel better, she covered it with a piece of gauze, and sent him off to school with the rest of us.

That night he said it was growing like a weed, and he thought it was time to call in old Doctor Murphy from Renfrew. Mother took another look at it and declared it had grown all right ... and was now a boil. Emerson said he was sure it was his last night in our old log house, and asked Audrey if she would sing "The Old Rugged Cross" at his funeral.

Mother knew exactly what to do with it, having heard from Mrs. Beam

what to do if a boil ever developed on any one of us.

She took a small bottle out of the back of the cupboard, and held it empty over the boiling kettle. It filled with steam and as quick as a flash, she took her hand off the bottle opening, and slammed the steam-filled vial over Emerson's boil! It all happened so fast, Emerson never knew what hit him. Emerson started to scream like a banshee. Mother told him to sit on the stool so she could get a good look at it.

Of course, all of us wanted to see too, and we crowded around Emerson who was still screaming at the top of his lungs.

Mother finally gave him a cuff on the ear and grabbed his hand that he was trying to feel the spot where the boil used to be.

"Don't touch it," she said.

For once, Emerson did what he was told!

The next morning Emerson said he was too weak to go to school, and I was sur-
