Renfrew looks at options for new pool, rec centre and second ice surface TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

It’s an age-old question that has been asked for decades in Renfrew. Where is the pool? When will one be built? The Ma-Te-Way Aquatic Centre committee posed the questions, again, at a special Renfrew council meeting on May 16. Renfrew’s recreation director then made a presentation outlining three new facility options, two of which included a pool. Leo Hall, a volunteer with the committee, appeared as a delegation with the support of a number of audience members. Hall took them through a history of the many different pool campaigns since the 1960s and noted the 2011 Master Plan study for the parks and recreation department again showed that 80 per cent of residents still wanted an indoor aquatic facility; the next closest requirement a second ice pad received 20 per cent support. “So council after council, keeps spending the money to ask the question ‘what are our recreation needs?’ and keeps getting the same answer, which it then ignores,” stated Hall. He also presented research on the cost of running a pool comparative to other local pools. And that Ma-TeWay has been a resounding success

which admirably serves the needs of the 10 per cent of the Renfrew citizens that use the ice surface. “It does not, however, serve the needs of the rest of our population, the seniors, the disabled … if the Town of Renfrew is considering further investment in recreation infrastructure, it makes sense to consider the needs of these citizens as well, rather than just the 10 per cent that are already being served,” said Hall. The aquatic committee has been active in the community for 15 years and he says they will continue to offer themselves as a resource. “But (we) need your leadership to complete this 50-year quest,” said Hall. “We believe the need is there, the money is there, and that the community would be overwhelmingly supportive if this council were to make an indoor aquatic facility a project for the residents of Renfrew.” Coun. Kate Windle said it has been an issue between a pool and a rink for too long. “It divides our community so we have to come to some kind of solution that will bring us together and not tear us apart,” said Windle. Coun. Tom Sidney questioned why it hasn’t been built. “That’s what I am having a hard time understanding … where is the rest of the fundraising?” said Sidney. Director Kevin Hill informed coun-

Kevin Hill, Town of Renfrew’s recreation director, left, answers questions after the meeting, as a large crowd gathers around the architectural drawings for proposed recreation facility at Ma-Te-Way. cil the recreation centre needs to have about $700,000 in work to bring it up to both the building code and fire code. As well, based on the town’s current bylaw it should have 110 parking spaces. If they were to achieve this they would need to purchase five to six properties at a cost of about $1.3 million. On top of that, the current facility does not meet current accessibility legislation and all municipal properties must be barrier free by 2025. In total, to retrofit the rec centre it would

cost the town more than $2 million. As to the ice, to bring it up to code and replace the outdoor rink it would be close to $800,000. If the town were to build a second ice surface, the Kanata Lasers of the Central Canada Hockey League is committed to immediately relocate the club to Renfrew. Owner Cory Greer was also at the meeting. The team is schedule to play six games in Renfrew in the upcoming season. Hill then presented three proposed

recreation facility options at Ma-TeWay, to council, with architectural drawings. The first was a second ice centre and recreation centre at a cost of $8.6 million and a one per cent tax rate increase; the second would include a pool and a recreation centre at a price tag of $7.3 million and a 5.6 per cent increase and the third would consist of a second ice surface, a recreation centre and a pool for $12.8 million and a 6.8 per cent tax increase. Sidney, chair of the recreation committee, said it was an important item that the committee has discussed for over a year, however for those not on the committee they were seeing it for the first time. “We have talked a lot about moving Renfrew forward,” said Sidney. “This is a good step to look at all of the options and whatever decision is made it should be for the best interests of all the citizens.” Coun. Andrew Evans asked why a few years ago the price tag was set at $18 million and now it was at $12.8 million. “It is a scaled-down version, something we could afford,” answered Hill. “An affordable modest facility.” Council directed staff to come up with a time line for the next steps on the proposal, including a public meeting to discuss at the May 23 council meeting.

Red Cross announces flood funding TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Help is on its way for those trying to recover from recent historic floods in Renfrew County. On May 18 the Canadian Red Cross announced $4 million of direct financial assistance to help those who have been hit hardest by the recent flooding in Ontario and Quebec. An appeal went out in early May and close to $7 million was raised. Quebec will receive $3 million for the more than 5,200 households affected and close to $1 million for about 1,600 households in Ontario, over half the funds raised to date. “It is for anybody in flood impacted areas,” said Tanya Elliott, Red Cross vice president of Ontario. “It’s intended to help people with their immediate needs as people get back into their homes and assess the damage.” Eligible registered households will receive $600 to help purchase what they urgently need during this very difficult time. The funds are only for primary residences and apply to one person per household. “It empowers them to make their own decision on what their families need,” said Elliott. “It helps them address their immediate needs in this extremely traumatic transition. We hope that it provides a measure of support during this difficult time.” The money is thanks to the generous support of Canadians across the country. “Canadians come together time and again and its thanks to those Canadians we are able to

provide this assistance,” said Elliott. Horton Mayor Robert Kingsbury says any money that the Red Cross can donate to anyone in the flood-affected area is good news. “The residents need to take advantage of this,” said Kingsbury. “I encourage residents to apply because every little bit helps.” However, he notes that residents should be careful as to what they apply it toward as to not duplicate their Disaster Recovery Assistance program applications. Kingsbury also wished it applied to cottages. “I feel sorry for those with secondary residents,” said Kingsbury. TO REGISTER

Households can register for Canadian Red Cross assistance online at redcross.ca/gethelp, or by phone at 1-800-863-6582. Flood-impacted households who have already registered with the Red Cross are required to re-register as additional information is required for this assistance. Households who have not yet registered with Red Cross are still eligible for assistance now and in the future upon registration. The fastest and most effective way to get this help is to submit an email address during registration so that financial support can be channelled electronically. All households who register with the Canadian Red Cross for assistance and whose primary residence is verified within a recognized floodimpacted area are eligible, whether they evacuated or stayed in their homes when the flooding occurred.

Horton Township thankful for community support after flood TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

The words thank you are too small says Horton Mayor Robert Kingsbury to those who supported the community during the recent flooding. “That is all I have,” Kingsbury told this newspaper. “Thank you. I don’t think I can say enough to thank the people that were involved and came out to help us. I hope they accept this show of gratitude on behalf of all of our council for what they have provided us when we needed it.” During the recent flooding and the aftermath people donated, not only their time, but equipment, food and what every was needed. Kingsbury received calls from both neighbouring mayors who offered whatever help they could offer. “A huge thank you to Renfrew Mayor Don Eady and Mayor Tom Peckett of McNab/Braeside,” said Kingsbury. After the Horton flood information meeting on May 15 Raina Newberry called the outpouring of support in the community unbelievable. Her road was washed out and businesses brought in truckloads of sand to help. “We didn’t even know the people helping out,” said Newberry. “We need to thank everyone who did something, I can’t believe in a time of crisis everyone wanted to help, everyone just came together, it was just amazing.” During the meeting that attracted a full house to the Horton Community Centre Sue Klatt, chief administrative officer/clerk for Horton thanked Steve Osipenko, acting commander with County of Renfrew Paramedic Service and community emergency management co-ordinator for Horton and County of Renfrew advance care paramedic Amber Hultink. “They led our team … I am very proud of them and (all) involved,” said Klatt as the crowd gave the two paramedics a large standing ovation. Osipenko called the community incredible. “I would first like to say thank you everyone who helped their neighbour and helped out,” said Osipenko to a large round of applause. He explained the township did not enact a state of emergency even though they were inundated with a workload. “You as a community all came out and helped … everyone who need anything got what they needed and we didn’t breach any of our procurement bylaws … so there was no advantage to do it,” said Osipenko.

A plea for help went out and it was answered as the water, which he called a slow death, was coming towards their properties. “We beat it. Every person that asked for help got help, every cottage or house that asked for us to send sandbags, they got sandbags as far as I am aware,” said Osipenko. “I am personally very proud that we did that and so is our team … there was no ‘my house first and yours second’. Everyone did everyone’s.” Osipenko hopes people are satisfied with their efforts. “We worked diligently, everyone was in the loop. As a team we worked really well together, we saved more places than we lost, that’s a positive,” said Osipenko to another large round of applause.

Steve Osipenko, community emergency management co-ordinator for Horton and County of Renfrew advance care paramedic Amber Hultink receive a sanding ovation during the Horton flood meeting on May 15.

Horton Township works on three key flood relief strategies TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland

Stay safe. Be patient. Those were the two key messages officials emphasized during a flood information meeting at the Horton Community Centre on May 15. “I think the main message is don’t be in a hurry to take your sandbags down,” said Horton Mayor Robert Kingsbury. “We know according to the ministry the waters that came down were contaminated we don’t want to spread that contamination around now that the sandbags have been affected.” In Horton, 96 seasonal dwellings and 69 primary residents were affected by the flood and municipal staff did wellness checks on all affected properties. The municipality announced three strategies that are in the development and implementation stage; a private road strategy, recovery of sandbags strategy and a landfill strategy to address the influx of debris. “Be patient,” said Kingsbury. Give us time to get these strategies in place we are trying our best.” Some residents wanted answers as to why the flood happened in the first place, however staff stressed this meeting was about recovery and clean up. They are working diligently to im-

Horton residents filled the community centre on May 15 for a public information on flood recovery initiatives by the township, Steve Osipenko emergency management co-ordinator addresses the large crowd. plement these strategies and to keep residents informed. “Please be patient as these strategies are developed to ensure it has the least impact to you the residents,” said Sue Klatt, chief administrative officer/ clerk for Horton. The proposed private road strategy will rehabilitate the private roads to the pre-flooding condition only. This includes removing debris from the road and the supply, delivery and spreading of granular materials, and then grading the finished product.

6 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, May 25, 2017

“This does not include upkeep or maintenance,” said Klatt. “It is to bring the road back to pre-flood condition, not to widen or modify.” Only the private lanes/roads listed in the affected flooding area (a map is available at the office) will qualify for rehabilitation. Staff has submitted to the province for funding as the municipality uses these roads for a number of public services. The sandbag removal strategy has two main options; hire a contractor

to pick up the bags and bring them to the landfill where they will have to be emptied, or place a roll off truck and/ or bins at central locations for residents to bring them there and the contractor will empty them in the landfill. “We are asking you to keep the sandbags up and/or on your property until a strategy has been approved,” said Klatt. Steve Osipenko, acting commander with County of Renfrew Paramedic Service and community emergency management co-ordinator for Horton, also cautioned the residents to leave the sandbags in place. “We are going to have them removed from your yard … don’t touch them, leave them in place,” said Osipenko. “Your yard is wet and saturated, leave them there. Don’t open the bags on a beach or in a sandbox, there is bacteria in the sand.” As to the landfill strategy, staff told the full house that great consideration must be given to the disposal of debris. “This will greatly impact future landsite capacity and could drastically reduce the life of the landsite,” said Klatt. “If 40 cottagers take their debris there we could lose 10 years off the landfill site.” A ticket system is now in place at the landfill and debris will be allocated to a specific flood area.

There were a number of speakers on hand offering information to residents including Stephen Seller a municipal adviser from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing who spoke on the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program. The ministry activated the program on May 5 and the deadline to apply is Sept. 11. He stressed that although it is probably the last thing on people’s minds, they should be keeping documentation. “If you have time take pictures before you throw things out, keep related receipts,” said Seller. “I know asking you to keep paper is not handy right now.” He also noted the assistance program is for primary residences only. “It is to help people who have lost their home and the essential contents that make a home operational,” said Seller. “We appreciate people with cottages have suffered costs, the idea is to make sure people have a home.” For more information on the assistance program visit: ontario.ca/DisasterAssistance. Also on hand were representatives from the Renfrew County and District Health Unit, Ministry of Natural resources and the Red Cross. For more information visit the website: hortontownship.ca.

Enforcement was strategically placed at collision hot spots along the Highway 17 corridor from Scheel Drive to Goshen Road. As a result of the safety checks a total of

30 vehicles were checked and inspected. Police issued 33 Provincial Offences tickets and 27 warnings. There were 13 out of service defects and 1 plate removal offence, in addition to other offences. The highlight of this event was a fully loaded tractor-trailer unit hauling scrap metal. An inspection revealed multiple major defects - most relating to the braking system

and suspension. The plates were removed and it was deemed unfit. A tragedy was likely avoided by removing this unsafe vehicle from our roadways. A second safety check initiative is expected to be conducted in the near future in the Upper Ottawa Valley area.

OPINION

Connected to your community

Relaying a change It’s that time of year again – hundreds of local high schoolers have been preparing for months to hit the track and do the rounds in support of a cause that touches just about everyone – fighting cancer. On Friday May, 26, Renfrew Collegiate Institute students host their Relay for Life event at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Then on Thursday, June 8, it’s Arnprior District High School’s turn. The event raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society, a national, community-based organization of volunteers formed in 1938 whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer. The society estimates two of five Canadians will develop cancer during their lifetimes and one in four will die from the disease. By all accounts, it’s a fundraiser the students, their teachers, families and indeed the community, can get behind. It is estimated that in 2016: • 102,900 Canadian men were diagnosed with cancer and 41,700 men died from cancer. • 99,500 Canadian women were diagnosed with cancer and 37,100 women died from can-

cer. • On average, 555 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer every day. • On average, 216 Canadians died from cancer every day. Almost no one remains untouched from the disease. The first relay in Canada was held in 1999 and raised $85,000. Together, we have come a long way. In total, it has raised over $500 million for the society, funds are used to support Canada’s most promising cancer research and vital support services for people with cancer and their families. With your help, the Society has been able to impact many lives. Relay for Life not only raises much-needed funds for cancer care and research, it evokes a sense of empowerment and accomplishment in the face of a disease that can so often leave patients and their families with a sense of powerlessness and hopelessness. It also fosters togetherness, teaches organization and planning, and in the end offers an opportunity for participants to honour their loved ones and have one heck of a lot of a fun in the process. The words of the society sum it up nicely: Cancer changes everything, so can you.

Residents, users aware of what Throw out that junk mail Ottawa River is capable of To the editor:

To the editor:

I would like to respond to your article ‘Government, citizens should get used to Ottawa River Flooding.’ Do you think that the people who live on it and use the Ottawa River sit around as it flows by and not know what it is capable of or what it does? Let me tell you as a valley girl, cottage user and occasional boater of this great river I know all about it having lived near and on it all my life I don’t need someone telling me to “get used to it,” I am used to it and so are most of the people who live near it. As a cottager I am well aware of the flood/ high water that takes place every year from spring thaw, that the town and city residents may not be aware of. What concerns me is that we already had our spring flood two weeks prior (would you like to

see pictures, roads were flooded then too). As far as I know, snow only melts once. Yes, the northern waters might thaw at a later time but that responsibility lays with hydro and the government to control or forecast the flow and amount of water that the many dams that are found in this Great Valley might expect. Would that not include forecasted rainfall? I would like to point out several years back (roughly 10-12) we had a weather alert for a rain blitz. Roads, train tracks, homes were damaged but not one cottage was flooded, if I’m not mistaken it happened around this time of year. When I hear “get used to it” I interpret that as someone not really understanding the full picture, and that as a lifelong resident and cottager I am fully aware of it and used to it.

Cindy Eady Arnprior, Ontario

I am sick to death of receiving junk mail disguised as official Government of Canada correspondence. I’m sure everyone knows what I mean: a standard sized brown envelope with a red maple leaf in the corner. It happened again this week, right around the same time many of us were checking our mailboxes for notices from the Canada Revenue Agency regarding our tax returns. An entirely random accident of timing, no doubt. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this kind of thing is skeevy as all get out. At least the email come-ons from Nigerian princes offering me a cut of millions in ill-gotten gains are refreshingly over the top in their absurdity and illegality. But this has an entirely unwarranted veneer of legitimacy. Well, it may not be illegal, but it sure as hell is not legitimate. This

is flim flammery of the lowest order. If anyone is seriously considering buying from these hucksters, I beg you to reconsider. If they had anything of genuine value to offer, would they have to disguise it and trick you in the first place? Please just throw the junk out, or better yet, fill the convenient postage prepaid return envelope with something exceedingly heavy (your used AA batteries will fit nicely in the envelope) and drop them a note letting them know how much you appreciate their duplicity. There is a special place in hell reserved for these bottom feeders, though they may have to share space with the people that develop cell phone plans. P.S. I am not a crank.

Tina Hunt has been a tireless advocate, fundraiser, and volunteer in her community. The Horton Township resident “makes getting involved in her community a priority,” said Insp. Colin Slight, detachment commander for Renfrew. “From a young age, she has been involved with community volunteer work and continues to do so as much as her policing schedule will allow.” Hunt is the OPP auxiliary liaison officer, teaches the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program in schools, raises thousands of dollars for multiple organizations, coaches sports teams, is a wife and mother of four children, and sits on the Township Recreation committee in Horton. “I truly love being involved in my community and the events that I host or assist with. “When we talk about youth, youth really are our people of tomorrow, they’re the ones that are going to make a difference,” she said. “If we can teach them at a young age to get out there and get involved and make a difference, then they’ll continue on with that in their future.” The Public Hero Awards are presented to recognize and honour the outstanding service provided by first responders in culturally diverse environments, as well as their volunteer efforts in their communities. Parish Supper served from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Recipients are nominated by colleagues, peers, and members of the community. Top police, paramedic, and fire officials presented the awards. The Intercultural Dialogue Institute, which hosts the awards, promotes understanding in culturally diverse communities. “They welcome the work our first responders do,” said Ralph, who became associated with IDI in 2009 before he retired as Toronto paramedic commander. “If we understand each others’ cultures and diversities, we can better work together to serve our communities,” he said. “Honouring public heroes — for their dedication, their altruism, the giving of their time … (and) delivering their services in a culturally diverse society — is a celebration for the people of IDI and it gives recognition to the people who have been nominated by their peers.”

Sherlock hits Renfrew stage May 30, 31, June 2 and 3 Daring pair

makes a slam

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

It’s elementary, dear readers. You must witness the great detective solve his latest mystery. The dedicated arts students of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School (SJHS) at 835 First St. in Renfrew are hitting the stage with Sherlock Holmes May 30, 31 and June 2 and 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 to see this fine detective in action with his motley crew of characters. The local high school production includes students from both the Renfrew and Arnprior areas and they encourage everyone to come and take in the show. Braeside’s J.P. Cassanto, in his fifth year and his fifth production at SJHS, is taking on the lead role of Sherlock himself. “Sherlock has a lot in his character, he is such an intelligent guy and even 10 lines ahead I have to prepare for what’s to come,” said Cassanto. “It’s your classic Sherlock mystery, but we have put our own spin on it to make it that much more intriguing.” He describes the cast as young and said it was a learning experience for some. “Myself and some of the older cast members, we have been able to teach them a lot,” said Cassanto. “It’s a fitting way to end my St. Joe’s career.” This is Arnprior’s Emily Cherney’s fourth production at SJHS and she portrays Alice, Sherlock’s love interest. Cherney thinks it is a really interesting take on Sherlock Holmes. “She has these letters that everyone seems to want … I don’t want to give too much away,” she said sly with a smile on her face. “It’s my kind of play, I like mysteries and it is a lot of fun.” Professor Moriarty is being brought to life by Renfrew’s Connor Dowdall, who is performing in his second SJHS production. “I am very happy with this particular character, I have wanted to play a villain since Grade 8,” said Dowdall. “He’s unpredictable, dangerous and a threat to the safety of London.” Dowdall said it is an exciting show. “It’s full of adventure and mystery with a fun group of characters.”

MIKE NAGRODSKI

Arnprior’s Thomas Cherney is also in his second high school production as Dr. John Watson. “I like his character, it’s fairly easy to go on and we have similar personalities,” said Cherney. The entire cast hopes everyone takes a trip back to the London Victorian age for Sherlock Holmes. “It’s a fun play with comedy, suspense, mystery and love,” he added. “Everyone should come and check it out.”

From their bids, it’s often possible to determine the one lead likely to defeat their contract. There were some very interesting hands in play. On Board #6, though most of the East-West pairs made 12 or 13 tricks, only one pair was daring enough to bid and make a slam. Nicely judged, Steve Gray and Sue Phillips! Arnprior’s highest house sale bodes well for sector DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The most expensive house sale in Arnprior’s history is at the conditional stage, and is an indicator that Ottawa and area real estate is doing well. That’s the opinion of Shane Lanigan, real estate broker at Lifestyle Real Estate Group. He oversaw the $910,000 sale of 15 Lena St., on the waterfront near Chats Lake Yacht Club. The Dochart native usually sells homes in Ottawa, the last five of which have been very good years. “It’s a nice home. You are going to get a lot of bang for your buck in Arnprior,” Lanigan said. “That’s true for all of Ottawa. There are quality homes for reasonable pric-

es and a nice lifestyle.” Part of the boon in sales might have to do with skyrocketing home prices in Toronto, where traffic and other big city problems has some looking to sell high and move to outer regions, even Ottawa. Prices soared a record 33 per cent in the province’s capital this year, pushing the cost of a detached home in the core to about $1.6 million. The buyer for 15 Lena — built in 1989 — is coming from the Kitchener/Waterloo area for work-related reasons. Lanigan has noticed prices in the Ottawa region jump about 10 per cent since last fall. Where a home went for $300,000 in the near past, it now goes for $500,000. See REAL page 14

This house and some contents at 15 Lena St. has tentatively sold for over $1 million. It’s the biggest residential sale within town limits, when comparing MLS listings.

County’s flood cleanup advise

Continued from page 13

With temperatures warming and the holiday weekend approaching, the Renfrew County and District Health Unit advises all residents affected by the recent flooding to take the following precautions: • Continue to stay out of flood waters, if at all possible, to avoid exposure to potentially high levels of harmful bacteria. Recreational water use in lakes and rivers that were heavily flooded should be avoided until water levels return to normal. Be on the lookout for floating debris. • Use personal protection during any flood cleanup activities. Wear rubber gloves and other protective clothing, including the use of an N95 mask when cleaning indoors to avoid breathing in potentially harmful airborne contaminants such as mould. • Wash your hands with soap and

“Selling above the asking price, multiple offers: Ottawa is definitely doing well. Lots of buyers this year,” he said. “We’ve seen some good years in the past, but not to this extent.” Another reason the west end is doing well may have to do with the anticipated move of the Department of National Defence from downtown to the former Nortel building near Bells Corners. Many of the thousands of well-paid employees live in Orleans. Already tired of fighting through “the split” leading to Highway 417 Queensway, at least some are expected to pack up and move west. Lanigan, as Mayor David Reid has often said in the past, believes it could lure more families to town. The Lena Street home, which is

selling with a boat and other items that push it to $1.1 million, is the highest price in town limits since MLS has kept records, Lanigan said. An estate in Gillies Grove sold for more, but he called that more of a land sale. Another sold for $1 million, but that was a farm so considered part commercial. Yet another, developer Don Johnston’s home on McLean Avenue, was in the $1 million range. Leaving Lena and Arnprior is Jim Silye. The former CFL football star, Calgary MP, and businessman chuckled at the notion that his house is the highest sale. He wouldn’t say much about it, not wanting to jinx it at the conditional stage. “No, but I’m pleased. It is good,” Silye said. “And I’ll be back of course.”

As a trustee overseeing the $175-million construction of a new Canada Museum of Science and Technology, he’ll be back at least four times a year. Silye grew up in Arnprior before heading to the University of Ottawa and a football career with the Calgary Stampeders. He still holds the record for most punt returns in a season, at 123. He is “loading up the car” for Calgary where he was Reform Party MP following the 1993 election. He has also had considerable success in oil and gas exploration. Silye returned home to Arnprior in time for the 2010 election, but lost the mayoral race to Reid by just 221 votes. He is fond of recalling when his kids were young they would cottage in Arnprior every summer.

clean water before handling food, after participating in flood cleanup activities and after handling articles contaminated with flood water. • Do not eat any foods that have been exposed to flood waters. Canned goods and sealed beverages may be used if these containers can be thoroughly cleaned and dried. • Perishable foods in refrigerators should be discarded if the power has been out for more than four hours. • Frozen foods may be refrozen if ice crystals are still present and the food was not exposed to flood waters. • Contents of sand bags may be contaminated and should not be used on beaches, gardens or sandboxes. Keep sand away from wells and waterways. Check with your local municipal office for more information regarding disposal of sand bags.

Art on the Green fundraiser to support doctor recruitment donated the space as well. Guests will have a chance to mingle with the artists from 1 to 2 p.m. and the bidding will start after that.

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

With a swing of a paintbrush and a chip into the wallet it’s time to putt over and help drive some new doctors into town. The first ever Art on the Green Silent Art Auction is set for June 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Renfrew Golf Club. The money raised will help with the Renfrew and Area Health Services Village (RAHSV), which has been working diligently since 2010 to attract 12 new doctors. Its goal is 14. When they started the RAHSV estimated that approximately one in seven residents in Renfrew, Greater Madawaska, Horton and Admaston/ Bromley did not have a family doctor. Today, they say there are 4,000 orphan patients and by 2021 it will be over 10,000 people without a family physician due to impending retirements. RAHSV says the community will need 12 more doctors by 2025 in addition to the 14 they have already committed to bring in. To do that they need to the support of the community by raising $50,000 per year for the next eight years, and one way to do that is at a unique new fundraiser. “I thought it would bring the arts

Bonanza of warblers in Algonquin MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

Last week I wrote about my experiences in Point Pelee National Park, one of the best places to see the spring migration of birds. Bird migration is heavily affected by weather conditions. South winds bring songbirds and when they cross large bodies of water overnight (most songbirds migrate at night because it is cooler, there is a lack of predators, and headwinds are less likely) and it rains, the birds land on the nearest point of land. Those conditions are when Pelee is at its best. Of my three days at Pelee, only the last had warblers present in reasonable numbers. The next day I went to Rondeau Provincial Park, another spit on Lake Erie famous for spring migration. Although Rondeau is much larger than Pelee and has plenty of birds, relatively few birders visit it. Thus, when I walked along Bennett Road and encountered dozens of warblers in the trees bordering it, only around 20 other birders were present to share the experience. After leaving the Carolinian forests of southern Ontario, I travelled to Algonquin Park to photograph its wildflowers and stunning scenery for an upcoming book. Many of the songbirds that pass through Pelee and Rondeau end up in Algonquin where they nest. Many more travel farther north to the vast boreal forest. Strong southwest winds and temperatures approaching 30 °C greeted me on arrival. That night conditions changed dramatically; it rained and by dawn the temperature dropped to 3 °C.

The next morning my good friend Rory MacKay and I travelled up the Arowhon Pines Road to look for birds, hoping there might be a fallout from the previous night. To our disappointment, the road was closed because high winds had blown down a tree that in falling had knocked down power lines across the road. Little were we to know that this would turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Instead we went to the Booth Rock Trail. Part of the trail lies on the old bed of the Ottawa, Arnprior, and Parry Sound Railway. Here, alders embrace the sides of the bed, and with water beyond them, it is often a good place for seeing birds. Immediately we knew it was going to be good birding. Warblers flitted all through the alders, most at eye level or lower. Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, Blackburnian, and Magnolia warblers were everywhere, and most were males in full breeding splendour. And most were only one to three metres away. After a mere two hours, 18 species of these stunning birds were tallied! The warblers were down low because that is where food was found. When sunny and warm, insects are plentiful up high in trees. But when it is really cold, as it was that morning, insects take shelter near the ground. As a result, views of the warblers were spectacular. It seemed only appropriate that after visiting the two best places in North America for seeing warblers in migration, it would be in my beloved Algonquin where I would have the best two hours of warbler-viewing of my life! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

A number of Chestnut-sided Warblers were among the 18 species of that group encountered recently in Algonquin.

It’s a true labour of love — 12,000 bears, countless events, several trips to Jamaica and endless smiles. The KatieBears Family Fun Day is coming up on May 27 and organizers say it’s a great opportunity to support an organization doing some impressive work in the community and beyond.

The seed for KatieBears was planted in 2008 when the Fraser family’s business, GoZoom, entered a float into a local Christmas parade, explains McNab/Braeside’s Lynda Fraser. Among the float features were stuffed bears used for decoration. Their daughter Katie noticed a child along the parade route who looked like they could use a boost so she offered one of the bears. When Katie passed away in 2009, the organization was created.

“We decided as a family it would be a great way to keep her memory alive by helping others and putting smiles on people’s faces,” said Fraser. She estimates the group has given out in the neighbourhood of 12,000 bears. It wasn’t long before the group’s good works stretched beyond providing bears at local events — KatieBears has adopted two schools in Jamaica — one in Dias and one in Grange Hill. Lynda and her husband Ian, along with volunteers, make a trip to Jamaica each year to deliver goodies and visit the schools. Six volunteers joined the Frasers for the trip this year. The first school to be adopted was Dalmally Basic in Dias, Hanover Parish. “When we first met them they were sitting on the dirt floor trying to get an education,” she said. “KatieBears adopted this school in 2012. To date the school has received electricity, tile floors, bathrooms, water supply, a stove, perimeter fence and many items such as first aid kits, school supplies, books, playground toys and of course KatieBears for all the children,” said Fraser. It’s an awesome experience to go back each year and meet with the students and teachers and see the fruits of their labour, said Fraser. KatieBears has approached local service clubs about their efforts and officials are pleased with a recent development. “Douglas Lions Club has generously donated $1,000 of the $1,004 needed for the immediate replacement

of the fridge at Dalmally Basic,” she said. “We’re so pleased and so thankful.” This is the final year KatieBears will be running their fun day — they’ll still host an annual bowlathon (Nov. 12 this year) and will concentrate on different fundraising efforts. “It is the final year and we’re planning on going out with a big bang,” said Fraser. Among the other upcoming events is a music night at Lumbertown Ale House in Arnprior on Aug. 31, featuring Danielle Allard, who will judge the KatieBear Idol event that is part of the fun day. The fun day takes place at the Royal Canadian Air Force Wing in Renfrew from 10 a.m. 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 27. The event features games and prizes for the kids, Skyza balls, and vendors and food booths on-site and also includes a silent auction with over 80 items to bid on. Fifteen singers have already signed up for the KatieBear Idol contest and there’s room for more. There are three divisions — youth (12 and under), teen (13-18) and adult (19 and up) and the first-place winners of each category receive $100. Second and third-place winners will receive special gift packs and there’s also a prize for the participant who collects the most pledges. A minimum of $15 in pledges in required. For information or to preregister to compete in this year’s event, email KatieBearIdol@yahoo.ca. More information is also available on the KatieBears’ page on Facebook.

Nyah Davidson soaks up some love from a student at Upper Top Lincoln ECI in Grange Hill.

Mary did not need lessons on how to pray

39 Renfrew Ave W., Suite 203 Renfrew, ON

613-432-8122 www.royallepageoneil.com Helping you is what we do.

I had long ago developed the habit of praying for just about anything I wanted Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

kneeling at Mother’s knee before we went to bed, I had long ago developed the habit of praying for just about anything I wanted, from new white ankle socks with lace around them, to praying for bad Marguirite to move to some foreign country. I even prayed my red hair would turn black, and that one morning I would wake up and every last freckle would have vanished through the night. So the teacher didn’t have to talk to me about praying…no siree! And on she would go. And she always seemed to know when the last hymn was being sung upstairs, because she would tell us to bow our heads for the closing prayer. This was when I started to enjoy Sunday School. Because each of us would be given a little folded piece of shiny paper with a story printed inside, and always there was a picture of Jesus on the front page, which I loved, and which was far different from the one hanging in the church upstairs, which I thought made Him look very sad. That day I was very quiet on the way home, as I tried to figure out why Sunday church was so different from the days when we went to church for the strawberry social, the Christmas concert, the pot-luck suppers, and the once-a-year lawn social when we ran races, played ball, and ate home-made ice cream all of which I loved better than the Sunday church service. And I decided, maybe I wasn’t a very nice person. Maybe no amount of praying would make me any better. And even though I had no idea what Father meant when he said it, but I wondered if that was my fate. When someone did something just a bit off centre, or the news in the paper was doom and gloom, he would say, “the world is going straight to Hell in a basket.” I wondered. Would that too be my fate? LIS NEW TIN G

There I sat, as I did every Sunday, in the same pew, in the same row, in the same church. Only a calamity of the highest order would keep us away from the Lutheran Church in Northcote on a Sunday morning. And it was always an ordeal for me. Goodness knows, I tried my best to understand what the minister was talking about, but as usual, I had no idea what he was saying. His very voice sent chills up my spine. I couldn’t understand why. When he came to visit, I wasn’t the least bit frightened of him, but everything changed when he came swooping down past our pew leading the choir, which that day consisted of one man and two women, all of whom had seen better days. But one thing you could say for them, they were loyal. Never missing a Sunday. Once the minister lumbered up to the pulpit, he paused, scanned the entire church, and I was absolutely sure when his eyes lit on me, he knew I was scared out of my wits. I wondered if my fright had something to do with his flowing robes, since my brother Emerson whose imagination was many notches above mine, said they reminded him of a huge black vulture getting ready to swoop down on us. His voice thundered through the church, and his face got redder and redder, and soon great beads of sweat began running onto his black robe. But I had to pay attention, because soon he would send us children off to Sunday School. And the woman who taught us, it was rumoured, could recite the bible cover to cover, and she would be waiting for us, with her arms folded in such a way, that she reminded me of a praying mantis. We scrunched down on little red painted chairs, and I knew exactly what would happen next. She would ask us what the message was from the minister. And of course, I would have no idea. I would purposely go into a coughing fit in the hope she would bypass me and go onto one of the other poor souls waiting to be grilled on what it meant to be a Christian. Thankfully the questions would end, and the teacher would begin the lesson, which had everything to do with being a better person. We were told we had to pray a lot. Well, that was no ordeal for me. Not only did we say our prayers

Future track stars climbing to new heights

St. Thomas the Apostle student Tyson Yeretch, above, prepares to launch during the softball throw contest at the school’s track meet at Ma-Te-Way Park May 11. The Grade 7 student went on to win that event and also took top honours at the meet hosted by St. Joseph’s Catholic High School May 16, also at Ma-Te-Way. At left, Sens fan Alex McGregor and his buddy Davis Runtz hang around during the annual invitational track meet at McNab Public School. Students from Arnprior to Renfrew participated. IN MEMORIAM

Meilleur, Armand (Cooney) – In loving memory of a dear husband, father and Bompé who passed away May 24, 2003. When God saw you getting so tired, And a cure was not to be, He put His arms around you, And whispered “Come to me” He didn’t like what you went through, And he finally gave you rest, His garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. And when we knew you were sleeping, So peaceful and free from pain, We wouldn’t wish you back, To suffer that endless pain again. You are not forgotten, Though on earth you are no more, Still in memory you are with us, As you always were before. The Renfrew/Pembroke Vipers Wrestling Club captured its 22nd consecutive team title this past weekend in Moncton, N.B. Leaving Thursday, May 11 in buses the 130-member squad stopped and toured the Quebec City Aquarium before continuing to its overnight stay in Edmundston, N.B. Friday the team moved on to see Hopewell Rocks and the Atlantic Ocean before returning to Moncton to register, weigh-in and have a meal. The tournament took place Saturday and Sunday, but at the opening ceremonies tribute was paid to a Moncton-area teen who is terminally ill with brain cancer. Becca Schofield has started the movement #BeccaToldMeTo that has gone viral asking people to do acts of kindness. The Vipers presented the family with a Vipers T-shirt with “Becca told me to” on the back and a painted portrait of Becca. Pembroke and Renfrew flags were displayed during the ceremonies and local pins were presented to their competition. The Vipers went on to capture the novice girls (10-11), kid boys and kid girls (12-13) team titles and placed second in the novice boys. The team missed placing in the bantam divisions. The youth and parents enjoyed the experience, including the buffet in Drummondville on their return to the county Monday evening. A huge thank you goes out to our communities for supporting this team. Without your help this event would not have been possible for us. Individual Viper wrestlers placing were as follows: Gold: Bradley Fraser, Keltey Murphy, Tanner Troke, Jayden Bates, Hayden Ladouceur, Kadance Moore, Ariel Gibbons and Hannah Gillett Silver: Owen Tracey, Corson Scobie, Landon Bates, Joel Yemen, Jackson Bates, Madison Emon-Brydges, Jayden Earle, Brooklyn Luckovitch, Addison Brophy, Abigail Brisco, Maggie Seabert, Ian Sully, Zoey Bresnahan, Sara Pinsent and Brooklyn Holley Bronze: Mackenzie Todd, Carter Proulx, Aaron Sarsfield, Ethan Kean, Kolby Johnson, Noah Gillett, Illyria Hepburn, Aidan Kelly, Ayden DeBruyn, Carter Troke, Ethan Powell and Gavin Troke Just off the podium: Kiley McClure, Jack Spooner, Savannah Wagner, Chloe Gibbons, Trayson Scerba, Jimmy Browne, Clarissa Warren, Siane McClure, Cameron Fraser, Carter Robertson, Gavan Robertson and Owen Larocque Our two tykes (under 9) ended up receiving bronze medals; Carter Holley and Connor Johnson. Liam Gates was unable to compete due to injury.

Cooper Brown sets Renfrew Golf Club men’s course record KEVIN SEBULSKI General manager, Renfrew Golf Club

Big news at Renfrew Golf Club (RGC) this week - we have a new men’s course record! Cooper Brown, back from his senior year at Augusta University, shot a 64 on Mother’s Day to break the long-standing record by one stroke. Cooper’s round was witnessed by his dad Kevin. Cooper had shot a 65 on Saturday. Two rounds of golf, 129 strokes and no bogeys. Congratulations Cooper! Our Ping Demo Day is Tuesday, June 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come out and try the latest in Ping golf equipment. Everyone who comes out to demo a club receives a $20 (putter or fairway club) or $50 (driver) gift voucher towards a new Ping Golf Club and a $100 gift voucher towards a new set of Ping irons if you buy the clubs from us on

Demo Day. If you are contemplating getting new irons, or a new fairway club, or even a new driver, we have set aside appointment times for you to book. Please see us in the golf shop to book an appointment or give us a call at 613-432-2485. Everyone is welcome to our Demo Day! Ladies Rec league finished up its two-week cycle with Annie’s Angels and Captain’s Crew tying for the win in A Flight with a score of 75. The Happy Hookers (with the low cumulative score of 70) and Smokin’ Tees are moving up to A Flight while Strokers and Metro are going from C Flight to B Flight. And the Bald Eagles and Slice Girls will be in C Flight for at least the next two weeks. Weekly prize winners were Kelly Pultz, Deidra Cobus, Beth Marcella and Linda Kidd on May 10 and Theresa Brydges, Jean Dick, Helen Crozier and Steph Jamieson on May 17.

BILL RAINBOTH, GENERAL MANAGER Dragonfly Golf Links

Finally, Dragonfly Golf men’s leagues were graced with good weather this past week. On Monday, Renfrew Pizzeria, Layton Knight Locke Contracting, and Riopelle Painting posted scores of 32 to tie for low rounds of the night. The pro shop draw winner was Sean Enright, and Jamie Cloutier had closest to the pin on No. 7. On Tuesday, the Wild Horsemen had the low round of the night, a sizzling score of 31. Bob Dillabough was closest to the pin on No. 5, and Mike McDonald was closest on No. 7. Not to be outdone, the Wednesday teams of Brisco Plumbing and the Skunk Alley Boys also had rounds of 31. Closest to the pin winners for the week were Braedon Cameron on No. 5, and Kean Hunt on No. 7.

All play was on the front nine with plans on alternating to the back nine the following week. The beauty of having nine-hole leagues is that there is always another nine for members and guests to “get a round in.” For the first time this year, ladies League experienced poor weather as an intense storm that produced high winds and lighting pulled players off the course half way through their rounds. Draw winners were the Tee Time Girls, Grip it and Sip it, and the Top Tees. Closest to the pin winners were Joanne Simard and new Dragonfly member Christine O’Hara. Our next Open Mik, with Mike McCormick is scheduled for this coming Monday, May 29. Registration is at 7 p.m. and music begins at 7:30 p.m. We are always looking for new participants. There is a two-song limit per performer. Open Mik is just another great reason to come on out to Dragonfly.

Community bike rides May 28 June marks the fourth year of the Silver Chain Challenge, that friendly competition between Renfrew and Lanark Counties to see who can log the most kilometres of active transportation in the month of June. This year, the County of Renfrew has come on board as an official sponsor.“It’s fun and easy to log your klicks,” says Fiebig. Every time you cycle or hike in June, go to www.silverchainchallenge. ca and record the details. Data from the two counties is tabulated, with allowances for differing populations and geography. “ Last year, Renfrew won, but it was close! Please join the fun.” A real bonus is that Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation is sponsoring the rides, paying for publicity, offering free bumper stickers that promote the one-metre rule, and other safety literature, as well as cold drinks and snacks.

To promote cycling, there will be a pair of community bike rides starting out from Ma Te Way Park on Sunday, May 28. Experienced riders will meet up and ride out at 8:30 a.m., while a family ride and a kids’ ride start at 10 a.m. All riders will meet back at Ma Te Way Park at 11 a.m. The Ottawa Valley Cycling and Active Transportation Alliance (OVCATA) is organizing the rides as part of a series of spring rides in towns throughout Renfrew County. OVCATA is holding the ride to promote cycling, the Silver Chain Challenge, and cycling safety, and to introduce itself. “We want to encourage people of all ages to get out on bikes this month and, in particular, to take part in the Silver Chain Challenge,” said OVCATA’s treasurer, Debbie Fiebig, of the Renfrew Pinnacle Riders and an organizer of the rides.

Ladies bball gears up for playoffs ROB WARREN

Midtown Flooring wrapped up first place with two wins on the second-last night of regulation in Renfrew’s ladies basketball. Basket Brawlers took Midtown to the wire and were in it until Courtney Roach iced the 39-34 win with two free throws in the dying seconds. Sarah Dougherty led the offence for Midtown, sinking seven of eight free throws on her way to 11 points. Leigh Dolan, of the Brawlers, hit her first four long-range attempts for 12 points. Sarah Dougherty again led the way (with 13 points) as Midtown defeated the Lumber Jills 38-20. Andrea Martin chipped in 11. Kathleen Barr led the Jills with eight. Renfrew Optometrists started strong against the Lumber Jills but saw their lead dwindle to 20-16 by half time. The Jills looked to have the game in hand, up 35-29 with one minute remaining. Katie Dolan sank a trey followed by Tasha Latendresse to send the game to overtime. The Jills outscored the Optometrists 6-2 in overtime to take the game 41-37. Jenna Barr had a game high 12 points. Heading into the final night of regulation (three games), five of the six teams are tied for second place with four wins apiece. Renfrew Optometrists had the first opportunity to grasp second place alone.

They played well but Midtown Flooring played their best game of the year and downed the Optometrists 58-28. Andrea Martin, Caitlin Dougherty, and Sarah Dougherty netted 16, 15, and 12 points respectively. The Optometrists had one more chance to break out of the pack. Frances/Lemke Cooperators felt the same way. The Optometrists built a nine-point lead in the first half but the Cooperators fought back to tie at 32 with three minutes left. A scoreless final three minutes sent the game to overtime. Both teams were hot but the Cooperators bested the Optometrists 43-37. Wendy Moon was unstoppable as she scored 23 points from both inside and outside. The Cooperators held a 12-3 advantage from the charity stripe. In the final matchup of the season, the Reunions needed a win and also needed more than an 11 point advantage at half time to take over second from the Cooperators. The Reunions were up 26-11 at the half and kept a minimum eight point lead throughout the second half. Reunions claimed second with a 43-30 win. The Reunions held the free throw edge 13-1. Final standings are: 1. Midtown Flooring (82) 2. Reunions (5-5) 3. Frances/Lemke Cooperators (5-5) 4. Lumber Jills (4-6) 5. Renfrew Optometrists (4-6) 6. Basket Brawlers (4-6)

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

sudoku

is enrs a r B ea

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Prove yourself with actions instead of words, Aries. Your productivity will not speak for itself, so you may need to do some self-promotion to get the word out.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you know what needs to get done. Now it is just a matter of finding the time to accomplish everything. Simplify things by writing all of your tasks down.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Explaining a proposal may require some creative thinking, Sagittarius. Make a list of all the talking points and then narrow down your options this week.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, your words will carry a lot of weight when you speak about a topic that is dear to your heart. Others might be inspired by your message, and you can recruit helpers.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 You may have to explain your point of view over and over again before others see your way of thinking, Virgo. Don’t let this discourage you this week.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you tend to hold yourself to a very high standard because you always want to do your best the first time out of the gate. Others appreciate your dedication.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Do not get caught up in gossip and hearsay, Gemini. That can compromise your credibility at work and among friends. Stay focused on your responsibilities.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, once you are knee-deep in a project, you may not need to take frequent breaks. You’re ready to plow through to the finish line and reap the rewards of hard work.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, sometimes it seems as if you have a sixth sense, especially where finding good deals are concerned. You’re happy to be the shopper of the family.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 While you shouldn’t compare yourself to others too often, once in a while it can illustrate just how far you have come. Why not compare against the person you once were?

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, no matter which words come out of your mouth, others are compelled to listen when you speak. Recognize the impact your words can have on others.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, extreme focus on a subject can be a help or a hindrance. Remember to remain flexible in the next few days.
