The Renfrew Masons are inviting the community to come and celebrate the 300th anniversary of Freemasonry. The Masonic Lodge No. 122 is marking 157 years and the Grand Lodge of England is celebrating 300 years of existence. The local lodge has a number of special events planned for June 3 and encourages the community to get involved. “That’s what the Masons like to do, we like to bring families and the community together,” said Andrew Dick, anniversary chair. It all gets underway with a parade at 10:30 a.m. starting at Low Square to 340 Raglan St South. “We have the whole Shriner unit coming,” said Dick. “There will be the Shriners’ air force, the minibikes, the cares, the Hillbillies and more.” Also marching in the parade will be the Renfrew Highland Pipes and Drums, members of the Eastern Star, Renfrew Masons and Masons from other areas. After the parade there are a number of free family fun events including a barbecue lunch, Shiners clowns, face painting, jumpy castle from RY-J’s, Little Ray’s Reptiles and a bike rodeo. All of the events will be in the parking lot behind the O’Brien apartments, the Metroland Media parking lot and the lot adjacent to it. “The Ontario Provincial Police are helping out with the bike rodeo and there will be different checkpoints and a chance to have your bike/helmet inspected,” said Dick. There will also be a free raffle for a new bike and 10 helmets. The masonic lodge will be open for a guided tours, including the lodge room. “Everything we are doing is free,” added Dick. “Anyone can go up to the lodge room and tour it.” For more information call 613-433-7942 and for more on the bike rodeo call: 613-433-6317.

Renfrew Collegiate Institute is the top Relay for Life fundraising school in all of Canada with $850,000 raised to date. On May 26, they raised another $52,000 at the 11th annual Relay for Life at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Chair John Bossy thanked everyone for joining together to party with a purpose. “Let’s join together to fight back against cancer and fight for a world without it,” said Bossy during the opening ceremony. “With each lap we are one step closer to finding support for a cancer patient, we are one step closer to being able to treat more and more people and we are one step closer to making cancer history.” He recalled many on the committee started out as junior relay members. “Seeing such a large collection of young faces fills me with hope that Relay for Life, after all of these years is still able to inspire people of all ages,” said Bossy. For more coverage on the Relay for Life see pages 4 and 10.

The Renfrew Fair is bringing a little Canadian twang, new country rock and an old rock and roll classic to the fair set for Sept. 6 to 10. The fair board announced its full fair lineup on Thursday, May 25. On Wednesday, Sept. 6 is the demolition derby; Thursday, Sept. 7 is Canada 150 Day at the fair with Whisky Jack Presents Stories and Songs of Stompin’ Tom; Friday, Sept. 8 is Rain Water Whisky and the River Town Saints; and on Saturday, Sept. 9 is Lighthouse. “We are very pleased with the entertainment we have booked this year,” said Judy Dobec, fair general manager. “We hope that everyone will enjoy it and for a good five days with the sun shining.” This is the 22nd year for the derby and back again is crowd favourite Xtreme Production to help run the show. “It’s always a crowd favourite,” said Dobec. To mark Canada 150 is a special tribute to a true Canadian icon. “Whisky Jack is Stompin’ Tom’s band and they are touring,” said Dobec. “We wanted to do something for Canada 150 and how much more Canadian is this!”

Friday night is country night at the fair with both bands having local connections. Rain Water Whisky’s Thomas Watson is originally from Renfrew and his group plays new country covers. River Town Saints is an up-and-coming new band with a number of chart topping hits such as A Little Bit Goes A Long Way, Cherry Bomb and most recently Bonfire, which went Top 10 at Country Radio. Dobec says a number of people suggested them on their Facebook page. “They are very popular group and I really enjoy their music,” said Dobec. “They are Ottawa Valley boys and let’s hope the fair grounds is full to support them.” River Town Saints singer-guitarists Chris McComb, from Arnprior, has fond memories of the Renfrew Fair. “My grandfather used to take me to the Renfrew Fair. There was a merry-go-round with motorcycles and he kept giving me tokens,” said McComb. He says he can’t wait to play at the Renfrew Fair. “We get to play in front of a hometown crowd. It’s cool but more nerve racking because there will be more people I know,” said McComb. “Fall fairs always feel homey to me too, the smell of the food, the lights of the rides, it feels natural.” River Town Saints drummer Jordan Potvin is also from Arnprior and says playing the Renfrew Fair is really exciting. “It’s such a rare moment for us to play close to home. I mean we have a good amount of friends and family out this way, and they’re always checking in to see how the band is doing,” said Potvin. “So now instead of just taking about it, they can come to see how much we’ve developed as a band and what the show is like now. It’s going to be an awesome fair this year!” Lighthouse is a classic Canadian rock and roll with such hits as One Fine Morning, Sunny Days and Pretty Lady. “We have found old rock has been successful at the fair, and why not Lighthouse?” said Dobec. For more information on the fair, visit http://www.renfrewfair.com.

Council holds open houses on rec options; special meeting June 6 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Plans for the future of recreation in Renfrew are moving full steam ahead. On May 23, council set a public open house on the proposed facility recreation options for May 29. The three proposed options that will be discussed are: new recreation centre and second ice pad; new recreation centre and aquatic facility; and new recreation centre, second ice pad and aquatic facility. Council also set a special council meeting for June 6 at 7 p.m. at town hall to review the findings of the open house and to provide direction to staff on the project. Coun. Tom Sidney, who is also the chair of the recreation committee, was the first to address the issue and stressed the importance of hearing the presentation. To inform residents of the meeting, officials mailed out a one-page invite/public notice to all residents in Renfrew. There was much discussion around the table as to what should be included in the mail-out. “Why not add a little more value (in the mail-out), in a survey they could bring as their selection, like a referendum,” said Coun. Andrew Evans. “They would have a physical piece of paper they could bring.” Recreation director Kevin Hill replied it was their intention at the open house to have a questionnaire so people could submit comments. Evans pressed on. Hill maintained the residents should see the presentation before they answer any questions on the options. Coun. Mike Coulas agreed with Evans’ point that these types of open houses only attract 20 to 25 per cent of residents. “It’s the other people who are going to have to pay the cost and we should hear from them one way or another. We should figure a way that we can get their opinion, whether that is after the fact, after these open house meetings,” said Coulas. “I don’t know how tight of a timeline you are on. This is a lot of money, you can’t just push it ahead because the timing is against us. If we have to wait, we have to wait.” Coulas noted the mail-out was important but they needed to seek the public’s opinion as well. “The invite is one thing, I don’t know what that is costing you,” said Coulas. “That’s important but I think everybody needs to be polled on this, everybody. Not just the select group that wants to push forward. We need to have the voice of everyone to spend this kind of money. This isn’t something that is going to happen over two to three years this will happen over the next few decades.” Hill suggested people be directed to the website to provide feedback as well, if that was acceptable to council. Evans still pushed for the idea of a ballot. “I’m very happy we got this far in less than five minutes … A (ballot) is kept with the numbers of people and who is okay with a pool, a second ice surface or a gym,” said Evans. “With such a huge investment we are asking in recreation it really should be up to the citizens to help steer where our monies are going to be spent and council knows where to lead because this is something the town will be married to for life.” Coun. Kate Windle said the idea of a ballot/survey was done a few years ago costing the town thousands of dollars. She liked the idea of what was recently done with the streetscape. Mayor Don Eady thought that after the open house people of Renfrew will be much more educated. He also noted for a survey council would have to see it first. “If you are doing this next week the timing is too quick to have something like that. We want to do it as fairly as possible and try and come up with best solution,” said Eady. “I can’t agree with a survey upfront, possibly down the road, something like that but not right off the top.” With the issue to accept both online and written feedback another key issue was brought up. TIMEFRAME Coulas asked twice specifically about the time frame.

“With the idea that we are not going to ask the public’s input with a ballot, would that say to the public that once we have the open house, and we have a meeting on June the 6 are we going to make a decision?” questioned Coulas. Eady said they needed to have the open house first and see the input they receive. “If we feel after the open house that the response is not what we would like to see, maybe that is the time for a questionnaire and put it in the newspaper people could cut out,” said Eady. Coulas followed up on the time frame issue. “Are we on some sort of time frame?” questioned Coulas. “I missed some of that.” Hill said he was working with what the two architects firms had provided him.

“In order to have the best approach to this I’m trying to meet these time frames,” said Hill. Coulas asked if they would have to make a decision on June 6. “Not necessarily, no,” said Eady. Eady called the debate a good healthy discussion. “Part of the parcel on moving it forward,” said Eady. “The last meeting was the baby steps and now we are starting into walking steps, so here we go.” The town advises if residents are unable to attend the public open house, the presentation is posted on the town’s website under the ‘News/ Notice’ section. Comments and feedback are welcome, email: recreation@renfrew.ca or submit to the rec centre or town hall clearly marked as ‘Proposed Recreation Facility Options.”

Residents storm out of flood meeting DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

At least some flood victims who attended an Ontario Power Generation meeting looking to blow off steam or hear apologies were sorely disappointed. “This is disgusting! This is goddamn disgusting,” roared John Bradley as he exited an hour after the May 25 meeting in Arnprior started. “You people make me sick.” Held at the Nick Smith Centre, the meeting featured OPG scientists and engineers from the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board (ORRPB). There were numerous maps and graphs and charts shown to the 40 or more residents on hand. Muted frustration could be heard throughout the presentations. Bradley and his wife Cathy, whose Sand Point home was ravaged by unprecedented snowmelt and rainfall a couple of short weeks before, were particularly upset by the structure of the meeting. Off the top, it was explained several times that no questions from the floor would be accepted. Anyone with questions would meet one on one with officials off to the side. At least some on hand saw that as an obvious divideand-conquer tactic. OPG dams that control the flow of rivers such as the Ottawa and Madawaska get their instructions from the ORRPB. It is comprised of several governmental bodies in the region from both sides of the Ottawa, along with OPG. Manon Lalonde is an executive engineer with ORRPB. She talked about integrated management, assessing and disseminating data, and mathematical models. All of it goes into an educated guess about how much water to expect before dams are opened and closed. “The main goal is to try and minimize the flooding,” she said. But it isn’t an exact science. In the end it comes down to Mother Nature. “The weather forecast is a very tricky thing,” Lalonde said. “It gives you a vague idea, that’s all.”

That doesn’t sit well with the Bradleys. They say customers pay a lot of money to OPG and others to spend a lot of time using expensive equipment to figure these things out. Lalonde finished by saying ORRPB will improve its website and invited those who could help to get in touch. That, too, was another bone of contention for some. Critics say communication was often limited or inaccurate during critical moments of the emergency. “They have all the stuff and they don’t warn us,” Bradley said. “They tell us it’ll be up four to six inches, and the next day it’s up two feet.” Marc Bisson is a water resource engineer at OPG. His point was that much of the centralwest and southern portions of the watershed have limited storage capacity. There are simply few reservoirs like shallow lakes to hold back the rain. The first major storm from April 27 to May 2 filled up the reservoirs; the second from May 4 to 7 saw water run off saturated soil straight to the river. “It really just hit the ground and ran off,” Bisson said. “It hit a record peak for this time of year at Chats Falls.” Those struggling to sandbag their homes, along with neighbours and strangers who helped them, took note that few to no OPG employees were participating. “They (OPG) are benefiting from all this rain,” Bradley said. “They should have had an army out there.” Ted Gruetzner is vice president of communications at OPG. He said employees were busy managing water flow, pulling logs and other measures. Some did volunteer to bag sand, as well. He said the bottom line is that weather can’t be stopped. No one else left the meeting early. Gruetzner said others found the meeting informative and useful. Bradley gets that weather is to blame for much of it. He still wants to see a post-mortem of how it was handled, with public input, and recommendations that will be implemented going forward. He said he saw nothing of that at

Art meets science in Burnstown Shortly after Bittersweet Gallery first opened its doors in the year 2000 owner Cheryl Babineau and her husband Richard Gill discovered the work of Anne Marie Chagnon at a show in Montreal and have been representing her jewellery designs ever since. Every year for the past 20, Chagnon has expressed the passion to create a distinctive and unconventional collection as prevailing as they are timeless. Her pieces unite chiseled pewter, iridescent glass, carved resin, gold, bronze, leather, wood and horn along with images taken from her charcoal drawings or details from her paintings. Over the past 10 years the gallery has celebrated her latest collections with a spring launch and trunk show. For the first time, Chagnon will be in attendance with her most recent 2017 spring/summer creations. Also for the first time the gallery is pleased to be showcasing the artist’s original abstract paintings. As in previous events Bittersweet will be donating a portion of the proceeds to ovarian cancer. This year the proceeds will go directly to the Ovarian Cancer Research Team at University of Ottawa. the meeting. “They just showed observation. It was all observation,” he said. “We know what happened. We were there. We lived it.” “We are a company that learns,” Gruetzner said. “Any time there is an event we go over coordination and how to share information. But nature will do what nature does.” That’s cold comfort to Cathy Bradley. “You just feel so helpless when it’s happening,” she said.

Who has the last word? It’s likely that many Ontarians breathed a sigh of relief when the provincial government announced its plan to scrap the Ontario Municipal Board. The OMB has often been perceived as too friendly to property developers. To many people, the board was quick to grab its rubber stamp and approve developments that didn’t fit with existing neighbourhoods. In theory, up until now, the Town of Renfrew and other municipalities in Ontario decide what gets built within their borders. But decisions by city and town councils could be appealed to the OMB. Change is never easy to deal with – especially close to home – but appeals to the board have often seemed like bad movie sequels: predictable, but with unhappy endings. The running theme has been developers who ask for unappealing elements – think of massive towers and postage-stamp parks – and then settle for slightly less height and slightly larger greenspaces. Cynics have to ask if the developer asked for the moon in order to get approval for their preferred design because it was slightly

less awful than the original request. And in the background, the threat of an expensive OMB appeal kept city and town councils – and community groups – wary of holding back large-scale developments. A new, less-powerful Local Planning Appeal Tribunal will take the place of the OMB. It’s not clear how the tribunal will work, or what kind of teeth it may have. Will municipalities really be able to control their own growth? And what happens if a city or town council votes to stop all growth, or a council is filled with councillors who want highrises on every street? The face of Ontario cities and towns could be stunted (along with construction jobs) or rebuilt ad nauseam depending on the tribunal’s decisions. It’s clear there should be an appeal process if a property owner thinks a council has been unreasonable, but every case is different. Some development is OK, some doesn’t fit in. Who has the last word? We don’t know just yet.

Musings from the McDougall Mill Museum: the name game KEVIN MCSHEFFREY

Have you ever stopped to wonder about the names that make up our town and area? For example, Raglan Street was named after Lord Raglan, a British commander in the Crimean War. Horton township comes from a British MP, R.J. Horton, who was responsible for emigration to Upper Canada. Plaunt Street was named after Xavier Plaunt, an early pioneer and land owner in Renfrew. same way, our Mill Museum bears the name of McDougall, after John Lorn McDougall (b. 1800, d. 1860). McDougall immigrated to Canada from Scotland as a Hudson Bay Company employee, and worked as a fur trader, businessman, farmer, and politician. After finishing his time with the company, he purchased farmland in the Renfrew area in the late 1830s. Once he had settled in Renfrew, he started the community’s first gen-

eral store. He also worked to build a bridge across Smith’s Creek. To raise funds for the bridge, as justice of the peace, he came up with the idea of fining shantymen in the local pubs 10 pounds apiece for unruly behaviour. It certainly was an effective way of raising funds for the bridge! He was an active member of the community, serving on village council as reeve and acting as coroner for the area. In the 1850s, he helped to establish a library, and was a member

Fourth option presented for Renfrew recreation facilities To the editor: Our son has been living with the effects of a severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) since he survived a van/ train collision in 1980 when he was 18. Since then we have been working to obtain appropriate accommodation, rehabilitation, and other services for survivors of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and TBI. Last summer we presented to Renfrew Victoria Hospital a “Centre of Excellence” proposal which incorporated a group home, a training cen-

tre, and a rehabilitation/health/fitness centre – the actual centrepiece of the proposal. Although the proposal received a good reception, RVH was not in a position at that time to follow through. We had not realized that the committee had once again reached a position of presenting to the community the options outlined last week in the Renfrew Mercury; however, even though we are late, we propose a fourth option – a pool, and a rehabilitation/health/fitness facility, which

would include programs currently available at, for instance, the Recreation Centre, and which would benefit all residents of Renfrew County. For rehabilitation from surgery, cardiac or pulmonary events, patients and caregivers have to travel to Ottawa. This facility would provide a broad range of services closer to home and family. To maintain levels of health and fitness, our residents – including those living with diabetes, pain, or other

As with music and writing, art of the last 150 years has taken time to tell us about our geography, our pursuits, our lifestyles and the events of our lives as Canadians. Our artists have produced a rich collection of paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs and drawings, which inform us about our common heritage and ourselves. Viewing the work of our most commonly known artists like Emily Carr, The Group of Seven and Alex Colville at the National Gallery will confirm this. I would like to suggest a few artists that Canadians may want to get to know better either by seeing their work at the NGC or online. Inuit print-

maker Kenojuak Ashevak, prodigious painter of life, William Kurelek, photo-realist painter Jack Chambers, the social commentary of The Native Group of Seven and the sublime canvases of Alex Janvier are a start to knowing more about Canadian Artists in the same way that many know about Canadian writers and musicians. There will be more on this in the July article. Our guest presenter for our next meeting, Tuesday, June 6, is Dwyene MacNabb of Calabogie. MacNabb will be demonstrating techniques using the palette knife with both acrylic and oil paint. You can view her work at the Artists Cove in Burnstown and The Gallery in Arnprior. chronic conditions – often need to be committed to designing their own program and receiving the care they need from various professionals, not always on a schedule they can meet, nor at a convenient place. From our initial meetings with community leaders during the past few months, we would be confident that such a facility would attract money from: private investment; federal, provincial, and county, especially relating to job opportunities;

federal and provincial ministries of health, with respect to the rehabilitation component; community contributions and fundraisers, since not just a percentage, but all Renfrew County residents could benefit We do not have the energy nor the stamina, but would be totally supportive, and would really appreciate someone who could embrace this vision and carry it forward. We would be glad to discuss. Bill and Beverley Mantell

Get the right pool for Renfrew To the editor: Renfrew is currently looking at options for a new pool. If the town is going to do it, it needs to be done right. About 10 years ago, 40 senior ladies took a bus from Ma-Te-Way to the pool in Stittsville. The pool there is beautiful. They have the plan at Ma-Te-Way on display. The pool in Stittsville has the complete plan for all ages and abilities/disabilities. There were four lanes for everyone. The first lane allowed for you to bring wheelchairs into the water right with the

children. Other lanes allowed for he beginners for swimming in low water and the splash pool for seniors. The fourth lane of the pool was for good swimmers and divers. So it was $18 million to copy that plan for Renfrew and you want to do scale down to $12 million. Hockey has taken over the town. And it is not fair to the many children who can’t play hockey for various reasons. Muriel Freamo Deslaurier Renfrew

John Lepack is a busy four year old, however he spent the first week of his life at CHEO, the annual telethon to support the hospital is June 10 and 11 on CTV.

Tiffany Lepack/ Metroland

A World’s First In Hearing Aids Never Change A Battery Again

CHEO valuable service for Valley TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

John Lepack loves superheroes. It doesn’t matter if it is Spider-Man or Batman, his imagination runs wild with their adventures. The thing my son doesn’t know, is he is already a superhero in my eyes. Shortly after John was born June 11, 2013, staff at Almonte General Hospital noticed something not right. They were able to quickly recognize he needed to be rushed to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). Kevin Keohane, president and chief executive officer of the CHEO Foundation, calls this a very typical story of CHEO working with rural hospitals outside of Ottawa, who he calls very important partners in care. “We have some tremendous community hospitals throughout the area that CHEO also serves. For the vast majority of families the first place that you go when your child needs care is to your community hospital. And we strongly encourage supporting the hospitals in your own areas,” said Keohane. “But at the same time, CHEO plays an important role with those community hospitals. When I think about CHEO it is a regional hospital.” As a new mom from Arnprior, who just experienced a 24-hour labour in Almonte, it was a difficult moment to be told John needed the care from CHEO. But we were not alone. CHEO truly is a regional hospital, and in 2016 there were 347 patients from Almonte with 1,166 visits; 472 patients from Arnprior with 1,513 visits; and 471 patients from Renfrew with 1,637 visits. CHEO not only serves patients from Eastern Ontario; but their catchment stretches all the way to Northern Ontario and Nunavut. Last year 52 per cent of patient visits to CHEO came from Ottawa and 33 per cent from other towns and cities in Eastern Ontario and Northern Ontario totalling 107,000 patient visits. “That means there is an awful lot of children and families living outside the Ottawa area who are needing the services of CHEO, and it is a privilege for CHEO to be able to provide these services,” said Keohane. John was transferred from Almonte to CHEO via a neonatal transport unit. When the CHEO team arrived to take John they explained everything about the unit and how they were going to transfer him. Although at the time I was scared that my newborn was leaving my side, I was reassured that he was safe. Over 500 times last year the neonatal transport unit went to communities outside of Ottawa to bring babies to CHEO. “Those are instances when these are the most fragile and critically-ill infants. And when you think, on 500 occasions last year they brought critically-ill infants to CHEO to make sure they

go home with their parents, nothing speaks more to how important CHEO is to the communities outside of Ottawa than that stat,” said Keohane. “That is how it should work, as we are working together with community hospitals to make sure the most critically-ill children come here and get the care they need, then go back into their own communities. That’s a role that CHEO is honoured to play.” When John arrived at CHEO he was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. He was showing signs of meningitis and had to have a spinal tap to test the fluid. To say my husband and I were scared is an understatement. However, from the moment we walked in to CHEO until the moment we left, I knew he was in the best possible hands. The team who worked on him always explained how they were examining him and what the next steps were. Thankfully, after a week at CHEO, he was discharged, having battled back from an infection. The equipment used to transfer, test and care for John while he was at CHEO was made possible due to community support. The provincial government provides money to CHEO for the staff to operate the equipment, but not the machines. One of the biggest boosts to CHEO is its annual telethon, which is set this year for June 10 and 11 on CTV Ottawa. In 2016, the telethon celebrated more than $8 million raised throughout the year. The new money comes from those who watch the telethon and are inspired to donate. “We are looking for support from across the community we serve,” said Keohane. “It’s really important to us that we demonstrate to people what we are doing at CHEO. And we ask them to show their support for what we do, by calling in to make a donation so we are able to meet all of the needs for next year.” Keohane says that every bit counts. “Every donation big and small goes toward helping CHEO deliver on its mission. And that really is to make sure kids and families get the best care they can receive.” As for John and the rest of the children who receive care at CHEO, Keohane agrees they are superheroes. There are more superheroes to add to the list as well. “The kids are definitely heroes, but the donors are heroes too,” said Keohane. “We could run a telethon and we can tell everyone the work CHEO is doing, and it all doesn’t matter unless people respond. So when you respond you are being a hero for kids, a hero for CHEO, and you are helping us to provide the care at a different level than we wouldn’t be able to without your help.” For more information on CHEO and the upcoming telethon visit the website at www.cheotelethon.com

A new way of thinking at Groves Park Lodge is changing the lives of their residents. Three staff members attended a Dementiability workshop in Ottawa; the team previously used the Montessori way with dementia patients and now have a new program in place. “They have changed the way of thinking about dementia. Those with dementia are able,” said Mary Wright a health care aid. Working on something and trying is a key focus of the new plan. “They have the ability to succeed and it gives them purpose,” said Kelly Garland, personal support worker. Even small tasks like being invited to help set the table mean a lot to the residents. “It’s a huge benefit to the residents,” added Erica Hobbs, program facilitator. Three quarters of the population at Groves Park live with dementia, which is a progressive degeneration of the brain cells that is currently irreversible. The new activities are set up to help them away from some responsive behaviours that come from loneliness and boredom. “It gives them purpose and something to do like they would have had at home,” said Garland. They have set up different workstations within the lounge for the residents. “We are doing things that they are able to do on their own, so they are able to be successful,” said Hobbs. “We set them up for success,” added Garland. Some of the many activities they

have recently added include gardening, puzzles, colouring, sorting buttons, coloured items and more. The sign by utensils says ‘Please sort the cutlery.’ “The signage is like an invitation to do something,” said Wright. All of the signs at the new stations have black writing on yellow paper. “You can see it better. It really makes it pop,” said Garland. One of the other stations is doll therapy, which Hobbs says has been really effective. “They sit in the rocking chair with the doll and the interaction is amazing, to see them interact with the baby is really precious,” said Wright. “They have responded really well and they enjoy doing it. It’s natural for them to cuddle with them.” Having a doll in their arms brings them back to another time. “The emotional response is a very different reaction,” said Hobbs. They were given specific suggestions on the doll characteristics, such has they needed to be realistic looking with eyes that are able to open and close. “If the eyes are open they think it is still awake,” explained Hobbs. “It’s a really calming effect for them,” added Garland. “It gives them purpose, taking care of the baby gives them something to do.” Another new practice they have started is name tags, on both sides, at the dinner tables and conversation starter questions on the table. “This way it encourages interaction and hopefully creates friendships,” said Hobbs. Groves Park Lodge is a 90-unit long-term care centre located at 470 Raglan St. N.

Renfrew wrestling coach Grant Lavallee hangs up his singlet RENFREW AMATEUR WRESTLING CLUB

The Renfrew Amateur Wrestling Club celebrated another very successful season at their annual banquet held at the RCAF Wing on May 20. The largest portion of the evening was a heartfelt tribute to the retiring founder of the club, Grant Lavallee. Among those paying tribute to Lavallee, former teacher, Jim McGregor spoke of the dedication to sport, which will long be remembered by all the young people, their families and the community. “Under your leadership, wrestling has really grown in Renfrew and beyond,” said McGregor. Harry Smith, to whom Lavallee has passed the torch as chairman of recreation and development for the club, spoke of his admiration of Lavallee. Smith went on to tell the large crowd that he first met Lavallee when he was a Grade 7 student at Horton Public School and the coach dropped by to demonstrate the sport. Thirteen years later, his daughter came home with a permission slip to join wrestling and the family has been active with the club ever since. Others talked of Lavallee’s 32 years of service and his attributes of leading by example and giving back to his community. In accepting a plaque from the board of directors, Lavallee spoke of the many friendships he made over the years, coaching more than 2,000 Renfrew wrestlers in his career. Lavallee expressed his confidence in his fellow board members and coaches’ abilities to continue the tradition of Renfrew being Canada’s capital of youth wrestling. Other long-term volunteers, Tina Smith, who was the club’s major fundraiser for many years and Shane Smith, a dedicated coach and past president, were also honoured for their many years of service to the wrestling club.

Bball quarters and semi-final play ROB WARREN

In quarter-final action of the Renfrew ladies basketball league, the Basket Brawlers used a magical two minutes to get back in the game with the Frances/Lemke Cooperators. They took a 13-10 lead after an 11-0 run with under three minutes remaining in the first half. The magic ended there, however, as the Cooperators gained a nine-point lead in the second half. The Brawlers edged close but the Cooperators hung on to advance 30-25. Melissa Penner popped in 12 points for the Cooperators and was matched by Leigh Dolan of the Brawlers. After 20 minutes of play, the Lumber Jills and Renfrew Optometrists were deadlocked at 20 points apiece. For the next 10 minutes, they traded the lead. The Optometrists secured a spot in the semi-finals in the last two minutes, taking the game 35-31. In semi-final action, Renfrew Optometrists drew first blood. The defending champions, Midtown Flooring, soon overtook them and maintained a slight lead until the Optometrists tied it at 30 with five minutes remaining. Midtown scored the next basket but were overtaken when Katie Dolan hit a trey (one of the team’s seven during the game) with less than two minutes on the clock. Midtown was zero for six from the line the rest of the way and the Optometrists iced the 38-35 victory by sinking two of four. Tasha Latendresse scored her 12 points on four long bombs. Sarah Dougherty led all scorers with 15 points in the losing cause. In other semi-final action, Mae Donohue scored the Reunion’s first 10 points to open up a gap on Frances/ Lemke Cooperators. The Cooperators pulled to within four at 20-16 early in the second half but weren’t sharp offensively and dropped a 38-24 decision. Mae finished with 16 points.

The floor shuffleboard component of the 2017 Older Adult Centres Association of Ontario (OSGA) 55+ Senior Games of District 5, Renfrew County, was held at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre in Barry’s Bay on Wednesday, May 24. This event is a qualifier for the OSGA 55+ Regional Games to be held in Pembroke on Aug. 16. MEDALISTS

Taking the gold medal were Betty Ann Stanton and Dan Stanton of Golden Lake, taking the silver were Joan Archambault and Pearl Smith of Barry’s Bay, and taking the Bronze, Lois McCormack and Jerry Cockwell, both members of the Champlain Silver Seniors Shuffleboard Club, 164 Argyle St. in Renfrew.

For Jerry, it was the second year in a row taking the bronze. Even though Jerry had selected a new female partner for 2017, as was the case in 2016, his medal was not determined until his very last shot of the final match, the match that determined if he would go home with nothing, or with the bronze. Jerry came through with an unbelievable shot that took the match, a shot that not only had his partner smiling, but all who were watching! Jerry Cockwell and Lois McCormack will now move up a notch to compete in the Regional 55+ Games as will gold medallists Betty Ann and Dan Stanton of Golden Lake. We encourage 55-plus readers within driving distance of Renfrew to show up any Tuesday at 1 p.m. at 164 Argyle St. in Renfrew. We will introduce you to floor shuffleboard, a game that can be as challenging as you wish.

RVH

GROWING FORWARD

May 2017 • In partnership with the Renfrew Mercury

Take comfort today knowing you have planned for tomorrow A significant factor in RVH’s ability to strive for excellence in healthcare is the support it receives through the Foundation. Legacy gifts are a great way for you to make a difference to the future of quality healthcare close to home while benefitting from the advantages for yourself and your loved ones.

Claire’s story A second floor waiting area at RVH is now home to a grandfather clock once owned by long-time nursing staff member Claire Valiquette. As part of her legacy, Claire chose to remember Renfrew Victoria Hospital most graciously. She spent her entire career at RVH, following graduation in 1960 from Victoria Hospital School of Nursing, retiring in 1996. In recognition of Claire’s gift, a room has been named in her honour and serves as a reminder of the dedication she had to her profession and the pride she had in her community hospital. The Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation gratefully acknowledges all those who have remembered it with a legacy gift.

Legacy advice from the experts • Why is it important to consider a charitable gift in your Will? A: Aside from helping to carry on your memory and the valuable work of your favourite charity, income tax burden and taxes owing can be high at the time of death and a charitable bequest can offer tax relief. • Who should consider planned giving? A: Those who have assets which they would like to leave to a charity and want to minimize the tax portion of their estate. • What are the options for including a charitable gift in your Will? A: The many options for leaving a gift include but are not limited to cash, securities, property, endowments, trusts, and life insurance proceeds. • Who can help me plan my gift? A: You should enlist the help of professional financial and /or legal advisors who deal with estate planning. The RVH Foundation can assist with options for directing gifts to meet your wishes.

May is LEAVE A LEGACY month.

Make RVH your charity of choice. Please call the RVH Foundation office at 613-432-4851 ext. 263, or visit us online at www.renfrewhosp.com to learn more about how you can contribute to the RVH difference.

Dragonfly Golf Links

Well, at least the weather cooperated well enough that we could get our Men’s Night Leagues in this past week. Finally, all men’s teams have played at least two rounds of golf, allowing the pro shop to assign handicaps for future weeks. Fortunes have reversed weatherwise regarding ladies night. Early in May, Thursdays were the best days of the week to play golf. For the second week in a row, however, they were rained out. The silver lining is that nobody was prevented from watching the Ottawa Senators from giving it their all in an exciting game seven loss to Pittsburgh. The Monday night men’s league saw Riopelle Painting win the draw prize, though Renfrew Pizzaria had the low score of the night with 31. Blair MacKenzie was closest to

the pin on #13, and Sean Enright was closest on #18. Team Dragonfly Golf Links and Sante Fe Restaurant were the draw winners on Tuesday, with Chuck Lambert and Trevor Matthews winning closest to the pin. The low score of 31 for the night was shared by TF Custom Signs, the Renfrew Firefighters, and the Renfrew Rehabs. Home Health & Medical Supplies and MacKenzie Motors won the draw prizes on Wednesday. Teams on this night played modified scrambles using three teams of two, best two scores counting. The Abandoned Cubs had low round of the night with a 64. Andrew Cameron and Tom Hyland were closest to the pin on #13 and #18 respectively. By the time you read this, Dragonfly will have hosted the St. Joes Prom for the second year in a row. Congrats to all the High School seniors on your graduation, and best wishes for the next stage of your adult lives!

Leonard Lepine We wish to express our appreciation to so many of our family, friends and neighbours for the cards, flowers and donations made on Dad’s behalf. Our family has been so blessed to have the love and support of so many people around us. Our heart filled thanks to the staff and residents at both the Arnprior Villa and Bonnechere Manor for the many friendships and wonderful care he received during his stay. We always knew that Dad was loved and in good care during his time there. We would also like to thank Boyce’s Funeral Home for their professional assistance in planning and arranging a celebration of Dad’s life so that we could say goodbye to a wonderful father and amazing grandad. He had a wonderful sense of humour and we will remember a lesson he always taught us, “You have to make fun to have fun”. Sincerely, Larry, Lori, Randi-Lynn & TJ

I miss your heartfelt gifts - in every room of my house I have something you made or gave me. I miss all the special things you did for our family. I miss going to see you (and Dad) at “home” when I go to Arnprior. I miss your smile, compassion, craziness, creativity and numerous talents, but most of all, your unconditional love. You were with me when I took my 1st breath, Mom. I was with you when you took your last. Ten years... I miss you, Mom. Forever in my heart Love, Sandra xxoo

Bridge club place to be MIKE NAGRODSKI

Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club

The secret is out! If you’re a card player, the Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club is definitely the place to be on Wednesday afternoons, as 16 tables of keen players showed up for the Swiss Teams contest on May 24. The Swiss Teams format features 4 person teams playing head-to-head. Winners play against other winners; unsuccessful teams play against similar teams. Though the playing strategy is quite different, the Swiss format is obviously very popular, judging from the enthusiastic turnout. The day got off to a shaky start as it was

realized that one team was a player short. Thanks to a creative solution cobbled together by Dave Sulpher and Ted Ambridge, it was possible for all 16 teams to play and the club members carried on. Thankyou, gentlemen. Congratulations to the three top teams of May 24 session: 1: Bonnie Beveridge -Jocelyne Tetrault -Marjorie Bain -Alison Maclean 2: Eleanor Thompson -Gail Gamble -Suzanne Kennedy -Allison Burkett 3: Jeannie Yagminas -Mona Brydges -Phillippa Baron -Nancy Cavanagh

Special flag

Derek Dunn/Metroland

Wayne Pickering and Blaine Mullins, centre right and right, of the Ontario Knights of Columbus are taking a Special Olympics flag to communities throughout Renfrew County, with a recent stop at St. Joseph High School, to promote their group’s commitment to the athletes. Helping hoist the flag on May 12 is Mike McMahon, left, and Bryan Torrell. Many signed before the flag moved on to the next town. It will eventually fly at Knights headquarters near Toronto.

Pink foolscap pads told students to toe the mark It wouldn’t be long. The school year would soon be over, and I was always amazed at how the entire school changed those last few weeks before the exams started, when we would know if we would be passed into the next grade. It was almost as if we were in church. Everyone was on his or her very best behaviour, as if our actions had as much to do with passing as doing well on our exams. Cecil gave up crunching his toes in his gumrubbers, and moving his ears up and down on the side of his head. But Cecil was as smart as a whip, and there was no doubt he would pass into the next grade with flying colours. But he wasn’t taking any chances. Even bad Marguirite wasn’t floating around the classroom like a crazed bird. Yes, the whole school had settled down and every effort was made to have Miss Crosby look on us kindly, in the hope it would convince her we deserved to be passed, regardless how poorly we did on our exams. Long before the exams started, a scary reminder that they were looming before us sat right there on the corner of Miss Crosby’s desk. A stack of foolscap pads with bright pink covers, one for everyone of us at the Northcote School was piled neatly waiting for the day. They were much longer and thinner than the notebooks we usually used for our school work. The only thing I liked about the pads was the colour. And the sheets inside were lined on one side,

printing, and trying desperately to stay within the lines Miss Crosby had drawn. Sometimes she would write one word at the start of the line, and whoever she ordered to the blackboard had to write the same word over and over again. For those of us in the lower grades, we had to print the alphabet, and I lived in constant fear that I would mix up the letters and be forced to spend another year in Primer Book. All of this, getting us ready for the writing of our final exams. Miss Crosby drilled us on arithmetic and history, and of course, we had to know the name of every township in Renfrew County! So all of this was reviewed long before exams and heaven forbid that we mixed up and put our township in Lanark County by mistake! So there sat the pink foolscap pads. They were more than a gentle reminder what was in store for us in a few weeks. As well as trying to remember everything we had been taught for the past year, those pads told us we better toe the mark, or we would pay dearly when the report cards were handed out the day school ended.

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

and blank on the other, and they were smooth – not like some of the scribblers we used every day for our lessons. The only good thing about the pink foolscap pads was that we didn’t have to buy them. Certainly Miss Crosby couldn’t afford them either on her paltry salary. So they had to have been provided by the school board, and that’s where the inspector held out, so that in itself added another level of fear. Everyone, including Miss Crosby, held the inspector in great awe. Weeks before exams started, Miss Crosby went over every last bit of teaching she had done in the entire year. We were drilled on spelling until the words danced in my head long after the exercise, and we even had an exam in penmanship. So, to have us practise, and using a rack with taut wires across two pieces of thin wood, the teacher would draw straight lines across the blackboard, and one by one, each of us was ordered to the front of the class for penmanship. For me, that meant

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

CIBC presents Dave Smith’s 3rd Annual

WILD WEST JAMBOREE ! 0 0 ,0 0 5 $ e s i a r o t s u g n i p l e h r o f u o y Thank On Thursday, May 18, over 230 people came out to the 3rd Annual Wild West Jamboree in support of the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre as we prepare to build an all-new 30-bed home. We ate. We talked. We danced. We rode Jed, the mechanical bull. More importantly, we left with hope for the future of our youth. A great big thank you goes out to everyone who supported a brighter future for at-risk youth and families. THANK YOU TO THE SPONSORS OF THE WILD WEST JAMBOREE 2017!

WHAT IS THE DAVE SMITH YOUTH TREATMENT CENTRE?

Charitable Registration #: 83900 3803 RR0001

Every year, thousands of Ontario youth fall victim to serious substance abuse. Left untreated, these issues can tear families apart and lead to a lifetime of addiction. The Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre offers life-saving intervention for our youth, aged 13 - 21. Kids who graduate from our program can venture to dream about a better life. Our new treatment centre will let us transform our already successful program from good to extraordinary. Supporters of Dave’s Dream fundraising campaign will help us take this step towards greater impact in our community by helping restore quality of life to families and reducing the fallout of addiction.

To give, please visit davesmithfoundation.org or call 613-594-8333 x1304.
