Another exciting announcement came halfway through the evening. “We are really pleased to be creating the Paige Dillabough Childhood Cancer Research Grant in the amount of $100,000,” said Relay for Life staff chair Mike Wright. “This grant will help fund research into childhood cancers for future years. Paige has been an integral part of relay and we are so happy to have her associated with our event.” Dillabough is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed at the age of eight with a malignant brain tumour. After undergoing years of treatment, she wanted to find a way to give back and has worked tirelessly on a variety of initiatives, including Relay for Life. A large contingent of Queen Elizabeth Public School staff and students was on hand in support of one of their own – educational assistant Barb Craig who is battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. ‘Barb’s Boxers’ wore purple t-shirts in honour of their co-worker and friend, who spoke to students at the school about her experience and was honoured with a special tribute video made by students and staff. A silent auction, head shaving, water games, bouncy castles, as well as a luminary ceremony and Chinese lantern launch were also part of the evening’s events.

Renfrew Power Generation presents $70,000 dividend to town On May 25, Renfrew Power Generation (RPG) Inc. presented a dividend of $70,000 to the Town of Renfrew - its sole shareholder. The dividend, which will be used by the town to fund ‘shave and pave’ road projects, is just one of the benefits of the decision to construct the new Thomas Low Generating Station and repair the aging dam and canal, say officials. “As a private for-profit business, RPG Inc. has several objectives: to maintain generation infrastructure, to investigate opportunities for sustainable growth, and to contribute to the success of Renfrew,” said Bill Bowles, RPG Inc. chair. “Aging infrastructure has been updated; the new Thomas Low Generating Station, designed to double hydro power production, is running at capacity; and the dividend will fund municipal projects,” he said. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady was on hand to accept the cheque. “RPG Inc.’s ability to

produce more renewable, clean, hydropower for the next 50 to 70 years, and successfully negotiate a longterm contract to sell power to the Ontario grid has created many benefits including a dividend for the Town of Renfrew,” said Eady. “The dividend will be allocated to ‘shave and pave’ road improvements - a program in which roads are ground and repaved. RPG Inc. also plays a vital role in managing Bonnechere River flows

and ensuring water levels at Renfrew provide an uninterrupted supply of water for the town’s drinking water, sewage treatment facility and firefighting services.” When RPG Inc. came into being more than a decade ago, creating more clean, renewable energy was a priority - a priority to be accomplished with minimal impact on the environment. At the same time, RPG Inc. focused on a program of maintaining and extending

plant service life through refurbishments. “The plan to produce more power consisted of years of planning, reviewing financial options, and conducting assessments and environmental studies before the decision was made to go forward, timing not unusual for new projects. “When Ontario an-

nounced its intent to eliminate coal-fired hydro-electric plants by 2014 and foster more green power generation using renewable energy including hydro, solar, and wind, RPG had an opportunity to enter into negotiations for a 20-year contract to sell power to the grid at a guaranteed price that included a full inflation index.

RPG Inc.’s long-term contract with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to sell electricity to the grid provided us with the financial stability we needed to renew and expand,” said Bowles. “As the sole shareholder and guarantor, the town endorsed RPG Inc.’s plan to expand generation capacities and repair the canal. RPG Inc. is repaying its $24.7 million loan with TD Bank using revenues from the IESO contract. “Today, we are celebrating many benefits. RPG Inc. provides a reliable source of clean, renewable energy— and will continue producing hydropower for the next 50 to 70 years, has doubled its capacity (four megawatts) to generate power using the same amount of water; and operates with virtually no pollution and minimal greenhouse gas emissions,” said Bowles.

Firefighter honoured Staff

Renfrew volunteer firefighter Wes Thompson has been awarded an exemplary service medal for his 20 years of service for the Renfrew Fire Department. “Not often do we get volunteers who stick around long enough to make it this far,” said Fire Chief Guy Longtin at the May 24 presentation. Thompson joined the fire service as a volunteer back in February of 1995, said Longtin. The exemplary service medal

The chief also expressed his thanks to Wes’ wife and family. “When that pager goes off at 3 o’clock in the morning, they get woken up, too,” said Longtin. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady thanked Thompson for his years of service and congratulated him on the honour.

Glamping officially arrives in Horton Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

It’s not the Storyland you remember. There will be no children to push up the hill or the stresses of a family vacation at the new Elements Luxury Tented Camp. Instead there are king sized beds with the best bedding in the industry, wilderness butlers, and spa services. Glamping - that’s glamorous camping has pitched its tent in Horton. The official media launch was held on May 24. The camp officially opens in June and is now 60 per cent sold out for the camping season. Nicole Laframboise purchased the former children’s activity park in 2013. She wanted to rehabilitate it to its natural state and she has accomplished that task and more at the 89-acre park. She says pre-sales are very reassuring. “It’s a good sign. Something I wanted to do for Renfrew County is bring tourism back,” said Laframboise. “We’ve got it, but I want to make it bigger and put it on the map so people know where it is. This is Renfrew County, we have exciting stuff happening here. We have whitewater rafting, microbreweries, downtown shopping that the city people don’t get to live. It’s a really good feeling.” After she bought the property, she was chatting with a friend about what she should do with the property and they suggested glamping. Laframboise set out and educated herself on the popular European passtime. “It’s a very advanced industry over there,” said Laframboise. “Here it’s really lesser known and this is the world of camping; in North American and especially in Canada. It’s about finding a way to embrace our Canadian heritage in a glamorous way.” She travelled to the first international 4 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 2, 2016

glamping show in the United Kingdom and met with consultants on themes, décor and more. She will also be travelling overseas this summer to speak on the North American glamping industry. Horton

Horton Township Mayor Robert Kingsbury was one of the many on hand to congratulate her at the opening. He said the camp was a chance to destress and a place to continue making new happy memories. Kingsbury also told the Renfrew Mercury the new camp will help promote the township. “I think it’s great, it promotes Horton to the whole world. When Nikki goes to the United Kingdom she is going to tell them what we have to offer right here in Horton,” said Kingsbury. “It establishes that yes you can succeed in Horton, with 60 per cent sold out that is pretty great.” Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant was one of the many speakers on hand who also offered her congratulations and presented a certificate. Laframboise knows she has a very specific target market; 38 to 68-year-olds, 80 per cent of whom are women. “We have hit that mark. We have people who are busy 9-5ers - they are stuck in office spaces, they are overworked and stressed, they have children and pets and they just wanted a place where they can run away and hide,” said Laframboise. “We are working on building that sort of economy and giving people a place to runaway to and retreat to.” The new campground has everything you would want to get away from it all: a yoga studio, paddle boards, groomed trails, mountain bikes and more. Renfrew woman among dozens charged in massive northeastern Ontario drug bust A multi-jurisdiction drug investigation in northeastern Ontario has resulted in dozens of arrests and more than 300 charges. Among those arrested is a 29-year-old female from Renfrew who faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime. Her court date has not yet been set. In November 2015, the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) began a joint investigation to identify and dismantle drug distribution networks trafficking prescription medications and illicit drugs to communities in northeastern Ontario. The lengthy investigation focused on the Timmins and Chapleau area and James Bay coastal communities, noting these drugs typically sell at four times the street price compared to urban centres, providing considerable profit incentive for criminals to exploit vulnerable residents in Aboriginal communities. At a news conference in Timmins today (May 24), NAPS Chief Terry Armstrong, OPP Deputy Commissioner Rick Barnum, Timmins Police Chief John Gauthier and Anishinabek Police Service Deputy Chief Dave Whitlow unveiled details of the investigation and displayed samples of the evidence seized during the six-month probe. They were

joined by Nishnawbe-Aski Nation leaders who provided insight into the challenges and devastating impacts illegal drugs and misuse of prescription medications have had on their citizens. During Project Coast, 21 search warrants were executed earlier this month at locations in northern and eastern Ontario. Police seized: • 57,792 methamphetamine tablets, • 7,229 oxycodone pills, • 706 grams of cocaine, • 476.6 grams of marihuana, and • 154.25 fentanyl patches. Police also seized more than $252,000 in Canadian currency, one shotgun and a bulletproof vest. As a result, 55 people have been charged with 341 offences under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act (CDSA) and the Criminal Code of Canada. Several of the accused persons will appear at Ontario Courts of Justice at various times, dates and locations. The investigation continues. “The trafficking of illegal and prescription drugs brings an element of society into our communities that engage in further criminal

behaviours to protect their enterprises. By working collaboratively with our police partners and mobilizing community leaders, the individuals who target our people have been arrested and charged as we tackle several challenging issues,” said Chief Armstrong. “Project Coast demonstrates that the OPP will do whatever it takes to support our police and Aboriginal community partners to support the wellness of our most vulnerable communities and prevent further harm and victimization,” said OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes. The OCEB has a mandate to work with its partners to facilitate the disruption and suppression of criminal enterprises, which affects the citizens of Ontario. OCEB provides members and operational support to investigations on a provincial, national, and international level, working in cooperation with law enforcement agencies from around the world. Individuals charged hail from a number of areas in northern Ontario and beyond, including Timmins, Sudbury, Chapleau, Toronto, Ottawa and Orleans.

Police warn of computer scam The Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to warn residents of a familiar computer scam that has recently surfaced in the area. Scammers call and pretend to represent a well-known computer based company like Microsoft and claim the victim’s computer is sending out viruses or has been hacked and must be cleaned. The scammer will remotely gain access to the computer and may run some programs or change some settings. The scammer will then advise that a fee is required for the service of cleaning and request a credit card number to cover the payment. In some cases, the scammer will send a transfer from the victim’s computer through a money service business like Western Union or MoneyGram. If a scam artist contacts you or if you have been defrauded call your local police or the Canadian AntiFraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 2, 2016 7

Opinion

Connected to your community

When doggies do, don’t leave it Now don’t that beat all. It’s been suggested locally by some dog owners (a small minority, we hope) that they can’t pick up after their pets because it would jeopardize their alpha status. Quoting some obscure dog obedience author, they suggest that if their canine sees them cleaning up after it has relieved itself, then they will no longer be top dog. And if you are no longer alpha, then you won’t be able to train your pup into the well-mannered pet it should be. This bit of gobbledygook has come in response to recent efforts by some people in Arnprior and Renfrew to have town councils increase the penalty for those who let their dogs defecate in public and don’t clean it up. The push mainly comes from the business community sick and tired of having to clean up doggy doo on sidewalks downtown before it deters customers. And it’s not only businesspeople who want a crackdown on boorish dog owners. Many citizens are annoyed, even downright hostile, at the sight each spring as the snow disappears of dog feces on area trails and in parks. It’s particularly disappointing for the folks who allow and encourage public use of such areas as Gillies Grove, the CN trail and the Arnprior and Renfrew fairgrounds to have to put up with insensitive louts who skulk away empty-handed after let-

ting their dogs do what comes naturally in public. The issue tends to be a highly emotional one, and can even prompt talk of vigilantism that could grow if the authorities don’t move to better curb the problem. It was suggested by at least one parent, after his youngster came through the front door trailing dog poop from his running shoes, that if only he knew where the offender lived, he’d march the lad over there to scuff it off on their carpets. Another Valley worthy suggested recently that, privacy be damned, send drones out to photograph offenders (dive bombing seems a little extreme), identify them and not only force them to clean up but post the photographs for all to see and ridicule. Okay, hyberbole does tend to take over when this matter is debated. But it does show how strongly people feel about this reoccurring blight in our communities. Which means councillors and bylaw officers should take the offense seriously, as difficult and distasteful as it is to police. The public has a role to play in embarrassing offenders too. If we are to shame, arm-twist and motivate people into removing their pets’ discharge from public places, a start would be debunking the poppycock that picking it up makes them any less able to be in charge.

Elbowgate a disgusting incident To the editor:

I watched with amazement as our elected and presumably well-educated MPs shouted and swore at one another, even more disgusted to realize that the leader of the pack was our golden boy. Later, it was explained to me that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was furious because the Opposition had succeeded in blocking his attempt to limit time for discussion of proposed government bills, this

time to be ended at will by his party (Motion 6). I hate to think what would have happened to Stephen Harper if he had attempted to pass a similar draconic law. In effect such a law would have reduced the Opposition to mere puppets. We might soon be thankful for the existence of the Senate and the Supreme Court.

This time last year I responded to an ad in the Renfrew Mercury and went to an information session about Renfrew’s McDougall Mill Museum. I am so glad I did as it has been the most interesting year and wonderful to be immersed in Renfrew’s history. descendants could be a big part in preserving that history. This museum is a jewel and has a vast store of Renfrew related memorabilia. We are always on the lookout for more artifacts, as well as other interested amateur historians. Volunteering with the museum can be as involved as you want, from helping catalogue our collection or making decisions about the museum, to helping with

the flower beds; there are always things that need doing. The fun of being in the museum long after the doors have been closed on another season is awesome. The annual general meeting is on June 8 at 7 p.m. in the museum. Mary Cook is our guest speaker and anyone who shares a love of the history of Renfrew is more than welcome to attend. “If you don’t know, if that person is unresponsive, they’re unconscious, you don’t feel a pulse, go and get the device, put in on them. It’ll tell you – ‘no shock advised’ if that’s the case and then it’ll coach you through CPR,” he said. “It really is unbelievable therapy the device is able to give.” A cabinet to house the AED was donated by the County of Renfrew defibrillator program, explained Blackwell. The county program will also look after a database, maintenance, training and help fa-

cilities keep their devices up to date. All Renfrew County schools and hockey arenas are outfitted with AEDs, said Blackwell. There are a number of defibrillators in Calabogie at the community centre and St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Calabogie Peaks and at the golf course. There are also devices in Griffith at the community centre and the Lions Club hall and at the Matawatchan community centre. Both Greater Madawaska fire halls also have them.

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anybody, even those with no prior symptoms. An on-site Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can mean a difference in saving a person’s life on the spot, or while waiting for an ambulance. Greater Madawaska Public Library is among the latest local organizations to receive an AED and officials gathered there recently to celebrate the life-saving addition to the facility. Organizations and agencies had the opportunity to apply for defibrillators through the Heart and Stroke Foundation, explained Robert Blackwell, Renfrew County public access defibrillator program co-ordinator. “We put in an application for the library and it was denied,” he explained.

“But in the meantime the Heart and Stroke Foundation had a donation come through.” Lucas Smith of Cardiac Science, the company that donated the device, was on hand for the presentation. He ran a demonstration for officials in attendance, explaining that even individuals with no first aid training are able to use the device when needed. Voice prompts as well as a text display will walk users through each step, he said. “It’s fully automatic,” he said, making note of a common fear – actually delivering the shock. “There’s that last minute doubt or fear. What most people don’t know is you cannot hurt someone with a defibrillator – it will only shock you if you have a shockable rhythm,” he said. All devices on the market are designed that way, he stressed.

Meredith, Katie and Dan Muldoon-Roy are a typical happy family who just has to watch out for a few extra things as Katie lives with mitochondrial disease. The family is gearing up to watch the CHEO Telethon this weekend June 4 and 5.

CHEO supports youth in Valley Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Katie Muldoon-Roy’s favourite subject at school is recess. And just like most sevenyear-olds, she loves school. Katie lives with mitochondrial disease and intractable epilepsy and uses a wheelchair for mobility. She loves to dance to top 40 music and help her mom bake in the kitchen.

12 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 2, 2016

As her mom Meredith Muldoon-Roy describes her daughter’s school day at the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre, Katie laughs as the music plays. Meredith says the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) means a lot to their family. “CHEO is like an extension of our family, we are on a first name basis, we know everyone by name and they know Katie as well,” said Meredith. CHEO Telethon June 4 and 5 Telethon

From page 12

Meredith, her husband Dan and Katie, from the McNab-Braeside area, go to CHEO quite a bit, last year they put 20,000 kilometres on their vehicle driving back and forth. Katie has already been admitted to CHEO three times this year. “With her health she can be great one moment and one second she is not,” said Meredith. “She needs physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, dietitian and child life specialists, which are all at CHEO.” Katie is also in the complex care program at CHEO for children who have multiple medical needs - it is a single point of care and they advocate for all of her needs. Overall, Katie sees 13 different specialists at CHEO. Meredith encourages everyone to tune into the CHEO Telethon this weekend; June 4 from 7 to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on CTV. It will feature poignant interviews with current and former patients and their families, as well as some of CHEO’s medical team. “They are your best bet,” said Meredith. “Doctors in Arnprior are great at what they do but they are not pediatric specialists. Even if your child doesn’t travel to CHEO, those doctors might call CHEO for advice.” Meredith volunteers at the CHEO foundation in the afternoon while Katie attends school and the family usually watches the telethon at home. “Children are our future, of all places CHEO should be a place for your yearly donation,” said Meredith. “For the fact kids need extra special equipment and skill that your average doctor does not have.” CHEO is a very special place for the Muldoon-Roy family. “It is an extension of our home.”

Organizers of the CHEO Telethon are preparing for the 33rd annual 24-hour event June 4 and 5, the CHEO Foundation’s largest fundraiser in support of the regional children’s hospital, which provides care to children from across eastern Ontario, western Quebec and from as far away as Nunavut. Last year it raised a record-breaking $7.94 million, up from $7.1 million in 2014. More than 70,000 infants, children and youth come through the hospital’s ER doors every year, but there is so much more that’s offered in terms of long-term and complex care at the hospital. Money raised this year during the telethon will go toward research, staff training and toys, games and crafts for patients, as well as medical equipment. CHEO is looking to buy another digital mobile x-ray unit that can be wheeled right to a patient’s bedside. Priced at $220,000, it’s considered a bigticket item, but means patients don’t have to be moved to the x-ray department for a scan. To generate excitement and enthusiasm ahead of the 24-hour show, June 3 will be proclaimed “Be a SuperHERO for CHEO Day” in Ottawa. Everyone is encouraged to dress as their favourite superhero. During the 24-hour telethon, you can make a donation by calling 613-738-1450 or toll-free at 1-888-738-1450. You can also make financial contributions online any time at cheofoundation.com. You can also donate in person by dropping by the EY Centre, located at 4899 Uplands Dr., during the telethon on June 4, from 7 to 11 p.m. and on June 5, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Understanding between County and First Nations At the May session of Renfrew County Council, Warden Peter Emon, along with Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation Chief Kirby Whiteduck, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlining key areas of common interest. From left are Renfrew County chief administrative officer/clerk Jim Hutton, Warden Emon, Chief Kirby Whiteduck and executive director of operations for Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation Vicky TwoAxe. Specifically, the MOU outlines key areas of common interest -- infrastructure and economic development, training and business opportunities, and skills development. A united position on these issues works to the betterment of both Renfrew County and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation. The next step is the establishment of a working group made up of designated representatives from the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation and the County of Renfrew. The working group will be tasked to identify priority areas for collaboration and action, such as the CP rail to trail program, the extension of Highway 417, promotion of Algonquin training opportunities through Enterprise Renfrew County, co-operation to enhance business and economic development opportunities, and any other priorities as identified and agreed upon by the working group.

Residents of Cobden

Please be advised that hydrant flushing will be carried out in Cobden the week of May 30th to June 3rd, 2016. Flushing will continue over the one (1) week period as part of a routine maintenance program that is necessary to maintain the integrity of the water system, remove sediment from water mains, verify the proper operation of hydrants and valves, and maintain fire fighting capability. Residents throughout Cobden may experience a drop in water pressure and water may be rusty or cloudy due to flushing of the distribution system. If you have rust-colored water please run your COLD WATER TAPS ONLY (suggested taps: bathtub or laundry tub) until the water is clear. Please DO NOT use your hot water until you have clean running water again. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions, please contact Steven Hodson at (613) 646-2282 or (613) 635-1517.

Greater Madawaska councillor and chair of the rink committee Brian Hunt, thanks Jennifer Gardiner from Ontario Power Generation for its $10,000 to help pay down the debt for the new roof at the Calabogie Rink on May 28 during Bogie Days as a number of local youth hold up the Ontario Power Generation banner that will hang at the rink.

OPG donates $10,000 to Calabogie Raise the Roof campaign Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

The rink roof fundraising efforts in Calabogie just got a little bit more powerful. This is thanks to a $10,000 donation by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) that was announced during the fourth annual Bogie Days festival on May 28 for the Raise the Roof campaign. Jennifer Gardiner, corporate relations and communications for OPG, explains they have three stations in the area - Mountain Chute, Barrett Chute and one right at Calabogie and this donation is a way to give back to the community of which they are a part. “OPG is proud to be part of the Calabogie community and thrilled to be part of this campaign that will give so much back to the community,” said Gardiner. Kim Rekowski, one of the committee

members, was very happy with the donation. “I think that it is outstanding that they are supporting the community they live in and do business in,” said Rekowski. Greater Madawaska councillor and chair of the rink committee Brian Hunt called OPG a major supporter of the township. “We are very excited about it,” said Hunt. “They have donated to a number of other local projects, including the beautification of Heritage Point park.” When the committee built the roof rink they took on a huge debt of $400,000 explained Hunt. “It’s all being paid back by donations,” said Hunt. “This $10,000 goes a long way to help.” Hunt and Gardiner took the stage and he thanked her for the support. A number of local youth then carried out an OPG banner that will be hung in the rink.

Daybreak was one of three bands to hit the stage during Bogie Days in Calabogie on May 28. Band members include: Andy Pigeon, guitar. Richard Collins vocals and percussion, Andy Taylor, bass/ vocals, Dave Prince, keyboards/ vocals, Tom Ring, drums and Derek Gauthier, percussion and drums. TIFFANY LEPACK/ METROLAND

Dragonfly course in amazing shape despite near drought weather Bill Rainboth

When the great soul singer James Brown sang his hit “It’s a man’s world” maybe he was referring this past week at Dragonfly Golf Links? The men were spoiled with great weather for Tuesday and Wednesday and the women had rain on Thursday, which prevented an official night from being played. Chin up ladies – pro shop manager Shawn Mosiondz is guaranteeing better weather in the weeks ahead. Superintendent Donny Valdock is one person who was not complaining with the showers. Despite wildly fluctuating temperatures this spring there has been very little rain. Donny deserves high praise for keeping the course in amazing condition despite near drought-like weather. Tuesday men’s league winners were Ray’s Flowers in A flight, the Dragonslayers in B flight, and the X-Men in C Flight with the best round of the week with a net score of 60. Congrats to Andrew Green for

Open Mik Night is coming to Dragonfly! The Mik in “Open Mik” comes from the host, Mike McCormick, who has been a professional entertainer/musician for most of his adult life. He also hosted a very successful Open Mic Night at the Neat Café, in Burnstown. We really hope to make this something special. The Ottawa Valley is blessed with a wealth of musical talent. The Dragonfly Lounge will provide an intimate setting for aspiring and accomplished musicians to showcase their talents. We hope that guests enjoy the warmth and charm of the log clubhouse, our eager and friendly staff, the nicest patio in the Ottawa Valley, some great food, and some great tunes from the performers. Mike will circulate a sign-up sheet for those wanting to perform beginning at 7 p.m., with music starting at 7:30 p.m. The first Open Mik Night will be Monday July 11, and then Monday Aug. 15, and Monday Sept. 12. Playoff time for ladies bball Rob Warren

It’s playoff time for the local ladies recreation basketball league. The quarter and semi-finals were played last week and the finals are set for May 30. quarterfinal

Megan Riopelle scored nine of the Basket Brawlers’ 11 first-half points to match the third place Reunions in quarterfinal basketball action. The second half was a different story, however. The Reunions played a smothering defence, allowing only two points in the half. They also capitalized on fast break opportunities, with Delaney Leavoy converting for 16 points. The final score was 33-13. The Lumber Jills picked the right time to upset Frances/Lemke Co-operators. The Co-operator’s first lead of the game came at 2322. Judline Wren immediately hit a trey to regain the lead for the Jills. Shortly after, with the game tied at 25, Judline hit her fourth trey of the night to close out the scoring. The Co-operators had chances but left six points at the line late in the game. semi-finals

Midtown Flooring started strong against the Lumber Jills in semi-final action. After a quick 10 points, they stalled and the Jills pulled to within five. Midtown again found their rhythm, finishing the half with 18 points before adding 28 more in the second half. The Jills only solved the Midtown defence for 18 points. Sarah Dougherty led the charge with 17 points. In the second semi-final the Reunions scored eight unanswered points to break a 7-7 deadlock from which Signature Styles/K L Plumbing never recovered. The Styles pulled to within four points (24-20) but then were forced to gamble with time running out. The Reunions hit 6 of 12 attempts from the line to close it out 31-22.

Message from Queen’s Park

Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski

Monthly Column – May 2016 Not news, but as I’ve previously stated, the Liberal Government dipped into your pocket once again—raising electricity rates on May 1st. The on-peak rate now stands at 18 cents per kWh compared to 4.3 cents when the Liberals came into office in 2003. I think it is more than safe to say that no line item in your household or small-business budget has risen faster than the rate of electricity. Moreover, Finance Minister Charles Sousa had the audacity to state in the Legislature that hydro rates were actually coming down. SUBMITTED

Cyclists pedalling at MAC and local trails June 5 A new organization that brings together and provides a voice for cyclists, hikers, walkers and paddlers in the Ottawa Valley is holding its first public ride and meeting at Ma-Te-Way Park on Sunday, June 5. In partnership with the Renfrew Pinnacle Pedallers, the Ottawa Valley Cycling and Active Transportation Alliance (OVCATA) is encouraging everyone in local communities to ride in support of the two rail trails that meet in Renfrew and then to meet for introductions and an information-sharing session. There has been growing interest in cycling and active (non-motorized) transportation (AT), and until now, there has not been a single, organized voice for these activities in the Ottawa Valley. This past winter, a group of friends who had come to know each other through an informal network of cycling and active transportation (AT) advocates decided to form OVCATA as a membership organization. Riders will meet at Ma-Te-Way Park at 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 5, and they can choose to ride either of the rail trails that intersect there (mountain bikes are needed for these) or go for a ride on area roads. Then, at 11:30 a.m., there will be a public information session hosted by the new organization. A canteen at the park’s activity centre will provide meals and refreshments, and the OPP will run a bike rodeo starting at 9 a.m. at the park. There, young riders are directed to various stations where they learn to observe traffic indicators, balancing skills, bike rules and more. Helmets are necessary for participants.

MPP John Yakabuski has been invited to the event as part of a campaign launched by the province-wide Share The Road Coalition and its Ride the Riding campaign. “John’s a cyclist and has been supportive on the issues we are involved with,” said OVCATA co-chair Ish Theilheimer. “He said he hopes to attend, with his bike, if his schedule allows. This is great, because cycling and AT need political champions like John.” Debbie Fiebig, of the Pinnacle Pedallers, is pleased that the new alliance has formed. “It goes well with our work here. We’re seeing a big wave of enthusiasm for cycling in our area, and it’s great that we can hook up with like-minded people from all over the Valley.” The Ottawa Valley Cycling and Active Transportation Alliance was founded, according to Theilheimer, to be “A voice for cycling and active transportation. We want to educate and advocate for the interests and safety of all cyclists and everyone who participates in AT.” Co-chair Shawna Babcock has been active promoting AT in Renfrew County for years and has been co-chair of the County’s Active Transportation Working Group as well as the Physical Activity Network of Renfrew County. She is enthusiastic about the formation of OVCATA. “It will bring people together in support of better infrastructure, education and resources for AT, which will be a major benefit in terms of our collective health and well-being, the environment, and the economy. Improved access to cycling and active transportation benefits us all in so many ways.”

While I get calls about the skyrocketing increases to hydro rates each-and-every week—the week the rates went up I had two interesting exchanges with constituents. One was with a gentleman who stated, categorically, that the price of electricity was literally tearing families apart in this province. I also spoke with a woman who volunteers at the Eganville Food Bank who stated that usage was up 30 percent and that they actually ran out of food the previous month. She further stated that when they inquired as to why people were using the food bank, the overwhelming response by recipients was that their options were either getting their hydro cut off, or paying their bill and relying on the food bank. As if people weren’t hurting enough, the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Glen Murray, took some more outlandish positions over the past number of weeks. He recently stated that as part of their cap-and-trade scheme and climate change plan he would: give every building in the province an energy retrofit, set aggressive targets to have 1.7 million electric cars on the road by 2024, and phase out natural gas in the province. Let’s start with his plan to retrofit every single building in the province of Ontario. You have to wonder where someone’s thinking is with a statement such as that: does he even have any idea how many buildings there are in the province? The cost of retrofitting every one of them would not be in the billions, but in the tens to hundreds of billions. On the issue of electric vehicles, he obviously has not spent much time in rural Ontario to see how far people have to drive on a daily basis. Auto industry spokespeople—in a polite way—essentially said that the Minister was out to lunch; that his targets didn’t even begin to meet the test of plausibility: 2024 is fewer than eight years away. Ontario currently only has between 5,000 to 6,000 electric cars on the road. Last week in a leaked Cabinet document, Glen Murray stated that Ontario would be phasing out natural gas as an energy source. Additionally, people wouldn’t be able to heat their homes with it. Once again, he must fail to recognize that 76 percent of Ontario’s heating comes from natural gas. We also have 19 gas-fired power plants with a capacity of around 10,000 MW. If you phase out natural gas under his plan, you would have to heat with electricity or some other non-fossil fuel source. According to well-respected people in the energy sector, Ontario would need an additional 80,000 MW of capacity—it would basically mean tripling what we have today. Where does Glen Murray think we will get that extra capacity? He wants to shut down nuclear and natural gas. What’s left? Does he expect to get it from wind turbines that only operate 20 to 30 percent of the time and need to be backed up by a reliable source? Given that we already have among the highest prices for electricity—how high do you think hydro prices would be if Glen Murray had his way? The one good thing about announcements from Glen Murray is that they are quickly followed by a reversal of some sort when it is pointed out to him by us in Opposition and stakeholders in the industry, that little of what he says makes sense. Minister Murray made many of these announcements in a speech to the Empire Club laying out details about his climate change plan. He finished his speech with these words: “So let’s have some courage. Let’s get up tomorrow and realize that we’re living in a different world.” If referring to himself, truer words were never spoken.

Highlights were once done by pulling small sections of hair through a cap – a process now done with foils and even perms have changed over the years, said Foster,

From afros to perms to shag and back again – Joan Foster has seen it all. The long-time Renfrew hairstylist still loves her work but it’s time to enjoy some of the finer things in life – which for Foster are quilting, reading and gardening. Foster recently closed the doors on her Argyle Street salon, Hairitage, for the last time after successfully operating the business for 39 years. There was at least one tearful goodbye on Foster’s last day at the salon in late April. “She’s the sweetest, dearest, best person I know,” said regular client Doreen McKnight, who had an appointment on closing day. “I’m really going to miss her,” said McKnight, who has been going to Hairitage for about 18 years. And as much as her clients will miss her, it’s the people who have kept Foster’s love of her profession alive over the years. “It’s the people. I really love doing hair and I still do. It’s just time for a change and to do some of those things you dream about,” said Foster. “And even though I love what I’m doing, it’s time to do some of those other things,” she said. She’s thankful for the community’s support. “Renfrew’s been good to me. I’ve had very dedicated clients,” said Foster. “I’m very grateful for the business.” This was Foster’s 44th year of hairdressing. Originally from Arnprior, she

becoming far less popular and going from regular rods to boomerang and everything in between. Doing a variety of hair work – from cuts and colour to perms and highlights – has kept things interesting. “Usually once a year I would take a course or a class,” said Foster. “It’s important to keep educating yourself. You’re never done learning. There’s always

something to learn.” And now, for Foster, there’s new learning to be had. “I’ve got a new home that’s not landscaped so I want to get into my garden,” said Foster. “In this business it’s go, go, go all the time, you’re always watching the clock, you hate to keep people waiting It’s just time for me to stop and smell the roses.”

She started out working for June Walker and soon was looking to open her own business. When the 100-year -old duplex house beside the RCAF Wing became available, the business was born. It was Dec. 4, 1977 when Hairitage first opened its doors. How’d she come up with

the shop’s name? “Actually one of my customers in the past shop – I asked different ladies to come up with a name and she said ‘heritage’ and I thought I’ll just switch it to Hairitage,” said Foster. While she has worked solo the past few years, Hairitage has employed a number of staff over the years – at one time four plus a helper. “Over the years I’ve had three girls work 18-yearsplus,” she said. “I’ve had

Make-A-Wish fundraiser on June 25 in Calabogie Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

It’s all about helping kids be kids. The inaugural summer launch event for a new MakeA-Wish family fun day is taking place at Calabogie Highlands Resort (981 Barryvale Rd. in Calabogie) on June 25 starting at 1 p.m. Urban Donlevy, president at Urban Ford and Urban Sport, is on the committee helping to put on the event. He has supported the Make-A-Wish foundation for a number of years. “I’m a sucker for helping kids,” said Donlevy. “I love helping kids.” The event is being sponsored by a number of local businesses, including Urban Ford and Sport, the Highlands, Yamaha and Quick Lane Tire and Auto Centre. Kim Rekowski, with Calabogie Experience, encourages everyone to come out. “There are over 70 people in Eastern Ontario who need a wish, it could be one of us,” said Rekowski. Donlevy says the goal of the event is to help create awareness for the foundation and raise enough money to grant three wishes, which costs $30,000. “I hope the wishes are a wish of hope and not giving up,” said Donlevy. “We want children who have been dealt a lesser hand to know they are not alone. The parents do a great job and we want to show the kids as a community we care a lot about them and they are not alone.” There are a number of fun family events planned for the day, including: a beach volleyball tournament,

guided ATV or UTV rides with Urban Sport and Yamaha, tour the lake on a wave runner, pontoon boat or a fishing boat or fly in a float plane. “The plan is to try and encourage families, organizations or businesses to come out to Calabogie Highlands on the water and have a great day,” said Donlevy. Ford is also sponsoring the Drive One for the Community event where people will have the chance to test drive a 2016 or 2017 Ford. The goal is to have 250 test drives and Ford will donate $5,000 to Make-A-Wish. “Come on out and take a test drive, there is no pressure,” assures Donlevy. The suggested donation for the event is $20 for anyone 16 years old or older. “There is no charge for any events, other than food and beverages,” said Donlevy. “All

Helena Ellen McCallum Wright August 5, 1943 – June 4, 1996 Many things have changed since you were taken away from us 20 years ago, but the one thing that hasn’t changed is our love for you. We miss you every day but know that you have been by our side and supported us during happy times, new adventures or difficult struggles that we overcame. Your strength made us strong, your trust gave us faith, your love made us into the people we are today. As days turned into weeks and weeks turned into years, the emptiness in our lives without you still remains. Life went on but it was a lot harder without you. You will be forever in our hearts and will always be our guardian angel. They say there is a reason, They say that time we heal; But neither time nor reason Will Change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles, No one knows how many times We have broken down and cried. We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without. Loving memories last forever. Albert, Terry & Sandra, William, Courtney, Brayden, Darlene, Mathew, Jessica, Brenda & Kevin, Andrew, Christopher, Rhonda & Alan, Autumn, Nathan, Kaylea, Eaton and Kyrane.

Open house is fifth annual fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Canada Burnstown’s Bittersweet Gallery hosts the annual spring open house on June 4 with the launch of the 2016 collection of Montreal jewellery artist/designer Anne Marie Chagnon. This open house marks the fifth annual event that raises awareness and funds for ovarian cancer in conjunction with launching the latest Chagnon line. Ovarian cancer is Canada’s most fatal women’s cancer. It is often overlooked and under-diagnosed and there is no screening test. Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed in late stages, result-

I fit in but not at the expense of my personality. Sometimes I disturb, but I always express and affirm myself with the passion to invent adornments to make you beautiful, as strong and remarkable as you are confident and proud.” Gill will also open his studio, where visitors can preview some intriguing current works in progress for his show in the fall. It’s also a good opportunity

to discuss custom work or sign up for a workshop in clay-relief. Bittersweet Gallery represents more than 50 Canadian artists in a vast array of media of which there will be many new works also. At the June 4 event, refreshments will be served and there will live music and draws to win a necklace donated by Chagnon, as well as a relief sculpture provided by Gill and painting by Burnstown artist John Robert Bradley. The open house runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bittersweet Gallery at 5 Leckie Lane in Burnstown. For more details call 613432-5254 or 613-433-9990 or visit www.burnstown.ca/bittersweet.

The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 2, 2016 43

Crossing your fingers made things right when telling a lie Mother put her hand on my shoulder and looked me square in the eye. I was about to head out to school, and I knew exactly what she was going to say, so I put my hands behind my back and crossed my fingers. I had it on good authority that if you were about to tell a lie, crossing your fingers made things right. “Now don’t you and Velma go walking in those ditches of water on the way home from school. It’s still too cold, and you’ll come with a death of the cold, and we’ll have to call Mrs. Beam and you know what that means: the onion treatment.” With my fingers knitted behind my back, I assured her we would stay clear of the ditches, knowing full well that Velma and I, once we got rid of our brothers and sisters, would do what we did just about every day coming home from the Northcote School. The ditches still had water from the spring run-off, and heavy rains for several days made them look like little streams, and were too inviting to be ignored. As soon as the coast was clear, Velma and I headed behind a cluster of cedars, peeled off our shoes and stockings, crammed them into our book bags, and tucked our skirts into the elastic legs of our navy blue fleece lined bloomers. Making sure no one was on the Northcote Side Road, we squealed with sheer joy as our bare feet hit the water.

Mary Cook’s Memories Mary Cook

The grass underfoot was like silk, and, of course, there was never any garbage thrown in the ditches back then, and we sloshed along at our heart’s content, heading from the side road from the school, almost to where our lanes began. Not once did I think of Mother’s words, as I left for school in the morning. After all, I had my fingers crossed. By the time we reached our long lane, we had run out of water in the ditches, and we reluctantly had to abandon what we considered the utmost joy, walking barefoot in the water-filled ditches of the Northcote Side Road. Our book bags hung from our shoulders, and we reluctantly left the ditches as we neared our lane, which was just before the Thom’s, gingerly stepping onto the dirt road and heading for the cluster of cedars behind the rail fence. We sat on the big rock and let the sun dry our legs, which were now the colour of beets freshly pulled from the garden, and still dripping wet from the water in

the ditches. Our legs had to be dried completely before we could put on our long stockings and shoes. And Velma and I laughed and delighted in the conspiracy of the whole escapade. Knowing perfectly well, as long as the ditches held the water, we would repeat our adventure. We couldn’t spend too much time getting back into our stockings and shoes, or our mothers would be suspicious when we didn’t arrive home when they expected us. After all, it was only three-and-a-half miles between the Northcote School and our farms, and so we had to be quick about it. I tore down our long lane like someone possessed, and the last I saw of Velma, she was already at their mailbox. I wasn’t that far behind my sister and brothers, tearing into the house out of breath, and heading right upstairs as I always did to get out of my school clothes, passing Mother who was busy at the Findlay Oval getting supper ready for the table. I kept my fingers crossed as usual, just in case she questioned me about walking in the water-filled ditches. My stockings were damp, so I draped them over the chair near my bed, tucked my not too dry shoes under the washstand, and headed downstairs in my play clothes. “I bet you and Velma walked the ditches on your way home,” my hateful brother Emerson said at the supper table.

I dropped my fork, put my hands behind my back with my fingers crossed, and denied it vehemently. Mother was too busy filling our plates to take notice, as I shot daggers at Emerson. My beloved sister Audrey vowed she saw Velma and me walking on the Northcote Side Road all the way home from school, and we were nowhere near the ditches. She had her hands behind her back, and I knew, without a doubt, her fingers were crossed. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? From pinch pots to Italian art Renfrew Art Guild

The Renfrew Art Guild prides itself on the diversity of its members. No one is a cookie cutter of another. We each have grown by picking up ideas or suggestions from other members. Watercolourists dabble in acrylic and vice versa or a potter now has become a painter. In my own case of doing acrylic for a number of years I have gone back to watercolour. It has

been the motto of the guild to share and it is working. Sharing is what we will be doing at our next meeting. Megan Hazen has just returned from Florence, Italy after studying art there for the past eight months. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and is visible in the works she is producing. Megan will give us a rundown of her experiences from the world’s best pizza to the fantastic museums and art

pieces she saw. As we mature in our lives we forget to be children. So we are going to explore a little bit of our childhood. Fred Halliwell, better known as The Howlin’ Dog, will be taking us down memory lane and having us make pinch pots. The question was asked at the last meeting if everyone had made one and surprisingly a number of people had not made a pinch pot. So, folks, that is what we will be

doing. Come along get a tour of Italy and make a pinch pot. Not too many groups can offer that! Jill Alexander, Bonnie Zimmerling and Diana Wakely will be in a show at the Stone School in Portage from June 24 to July 17. Jill and Diana have chosen nine photos by Bonnie, a well-known photographer in the Pontiac, and produced our own versions - Jill in heavy acrylics and Diana in watercolour. Hence the title Creative Minds Think Differently. Remember that Art In the
