RENFREW PASSES BUDGET AT 1.9 PER CENT INCREASE JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com Renfrew residents are looking at a 1.9 per cent increase in property taxes this year, down from a preliminary figure of 2.7 per cent. The budget was brought up during the regular council meeting on May 28, where Treasurer Keray O'Reilly not only broke down this year's revised schedule, but also looked ahead to the 10-year forecast. "Looking at the forecast, you'll see that there's some years that we are short and some where we have a surplus, and that surplus will be set aside to offset those years we are short," he said. "Basically, we are self financing over a 10year period and not having to borrow money from any particular item." The 1.9 per cent, which includes a slight rise in the county
rate (0.5 per cent) and a drop in the school board rate(-5.3 per cent), equals an average of roughly $57 more per $200,000 property residents will need to pay. The town rate is set at 4.2 per cent. The capital budget was approved at $1,020,000, a two per cent increase from last year, and was broken down into infrastructure at $306,000, facilities at $204,000, rolling stock (vehicles) at $357,000 and equipment/ other at $153,000. The budget was previously discussed during a special council meeting on May 23, where the treasurer presented the original 2.7 per cent increase. While many council members were relieved this increase wasn't any higher, Coun. Mike Coulas expressed his concerns at the previous meeting, saying "anything more than two per cent and we are wasting mon-
THE ISSUE: RENFREW COUNCIL HAS PASSED ITS 2019 BUDGET LOCAL IMPACT: TAXPAYERS ARE LOOKING AT A 1.9% INCREASE, LOWER THAN WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY PROPOSED ey." Eventually, council had recommended that the senior management team and the chief librarian make further reductions to the proposed budget to bring the increase down to two per cent, which would amount to roughly $85,000 in cuts. In addition, Mayor Don Eady had recommended a council roll-back of salary, amounting to two per cent, which was infor-
mally supported by other members of council. This pay cut was not factored in to the revised budget brought before council. Coun. Tom Sidney reminded the treasurer of the proclamation made in the special council meeting. "If we pass this budget today, and we do finalize the two per cent cut, can this be fixed today, or once we approve this today, that's it?" he asked. O'Reilly said while the pay cut could not be incorporated in this year's budget once approved, it could certainly be added for next year's. Coun. Sandi Heins commended the treasurer on putting together the budget, saying she was impressed the department was able to get the levy down to where it currently sits. "We are relying on the amount of taxes that the county and school board are coming through with at this time, being
at 0.5 per cent with the county and the school board at a negative 5.3. That does help us out a lot," Heins said. "And I think going forward as council requested that the finance committee will be working very diligently on getting the budget together and how they can look at where we are and what we need for next year." Council also approved a total $470,000 to be transferred into the various reserves, with $50,000 taken from the OPP Reserve to offset the increase in policing costs.
STORY BEHIND THE STORY: Renfrew council has been crunching the numbers for their 2019 budget for several weeks. We've been following along, including at a meeting May 23 when officials decided they'd need to make some cuts to lower the tax increase for ratepayers.

RENFREW COUNCIL APPROVES MA-TE-WAY EXPANSION REDESIGN JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com It looks like residents may need to wait a bit longer for a new ice pad. Council has approved a request for redesigns for the upcoming Ma-Te-Way expansion, which will take 12 weeks, before deciding on whether to move forward with construction or to wait for a potential grant from the federal and provincial governments for culture and recreation. During the May 28 meeting, parks and recreation director Kevin Hill presented the recommendation that council authorize N45 Architecture Inc. to complete the redesign for the engineering of the expansion at a cost of $157,200, and to authorize staff to work with Laurin General Contractors towards finalizing the cost.
Jonathan Mulvihill/Torstar On May 28, Renfrew council authorized N45 Architecture Inc. to work on redesigns for the Ma-Te-Way expansion project, which includes a second ice pad. The redesign process will take 12 weeks, after which council will decide on moving forward with construction. He also gave his view on the upcoming grant opportunity. "I look at the grant opportunity that is before us and unfortunately, I see it
as too little, too late," Hill said. "However, with the timing of the project, and going through the costing of the redesign we are looking at, I feel it will pre-
pare the project and the municipality to have the best opportunity to apply for an upcoming grant in the fall." Council was previously in discussion on the expansion during the Committee of the Whole meeting on May 14. Members were split then on how to proceed, some wanting to move forward with construction, while others wanted to wait for the potential grant. If council chooses to wait for a decision on possible funding, expected sometime in October, construction wouldn't begin until spring 2020, resulting in an additional $210,000 to cover inflation costs. N45 Architecture Inc. requires 12 weeks to complete additional design and engineering, while Laurin General Contractor presented a 72-week proposed
construction schedule. The facility will include an additional NHL size ice pad, a six-foot-wide walking track, a full-size gym, a fitness centre, a sports museum, three multi-purpose rooms, administrative offices and change rooms as well as washrooms. The Town of Renfrew has set aside $200,000 annually in their capital budget to address facility needs, with another $65,000 from the Outdoor Rink Reserve that can be used toward the expansion. Coun. Sandi Heins commended Hill for bringing the project at a zero per
cent increase in new taxes. "We are saying zero per cent. We are not increasing the tax levy this year to support this," Heins said. "We are certainly using taxpayers dollars, but we have money in reserves set aside for such recreational capital development. I wouldn't want anybody to be misled that this was all for free, but there was some planning in regard to the money coming forward to support this." After the redesigns are completed by N45, council is expected to make a decision on whether or not to move forward with construction of the expansion.

Police are investigating after the Metroland Media building at 35 Opeongo Rd. in Renfrew was repeatedly vandalized. Multiple times, vandals have spray painted swastikas on the back of the building, which faces the Millennium Trail. An adjacent fence that does not belong to the company, has also been tagged. So far, there are three instances of the graffiti appearing on the building over the last few months, the most recent being on May 26. The swastikas are painted over have reappeared each time in roughly the same area. Ontario Provincial Po-
lice (OPP) Const. Tina Hunt says this is considered mischief pending investigation. She also suggests ways to prevent this type of vandalism on other properties. "To deter any vandalism on your property, whether they be residential or commercial, it would be good to have security measures in place such as cameras, alarm systems and adequate lighting," Hunt said. "Also, make sure nothing that could aid in the mischief is accessible. There have been residences in the past vandalized where paint was left out." As part of a health information system, each health partner will have real-time access to patient medical information, allowing healthcare providers to make timely, informed decisions based on the most comprehensive and connected information. As a result of this system, patients and providers can look forward to improved collab-

When patients arrive at RVH or SFMH en route to the Ottawa Hospital or the Ottawa Heart Institute, their care team will be better connected to their health story and ready to provide the compassionate care that every patient deserves," said Randy Penney, president and CEO of RVH and SFMH. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is proposing to redevelop the existing Calabogie Generating Station (GS). This proposed undertaking will involve an Environmental Assessment (EA) under the Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA) Class EA for Waterpower Projects as a Project Associated with Existing Infrastructure. Constructed in 1917, the existing station has an installed capacity of 5 megawatts (MW) and is now at its end of life stage. OPG intends to redevelop the site and increase the station’s capacity to approximately 10 to 15 MW.

NOTICE OF RESCHEDULED SECOND AND LAST OPEN HOUSE FOR THE PROPOSED UNDERTAKING UNDER THE ONTARIO WATERPOWER ASSOCIATION CLASS EA FOR WATERPOWER PROJECTS: CALABOGIE GENERATING STATION REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT The Proposed Undertaking is on the Madawaska River within the village of Calabogie, in the Township of Greater Madawaska, Ontario, as detailed on the map below. OPG does not plan to alter the approved water levels and flows as described in the Madawaska River Water Management Plan (WMP). As such, the anticipated zone of impact for the project is limited to the immediate area around the station (see shaded/hatched area on the map). A minor amendment to the WMP is anticipated under the Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act. This notice and public consultation process for the project under the Class EA is intended to coordinate and meet the notification requirements relevant to the planning stage of the project under both the Environmental Assessment Act and Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act statutes. The Class EA process requires OPG to undertake an evaluation of the project to evaluate its potential effects to the environment (positive and negative) and prepare a detailed Environmental Report. The evaluation and resulting environmental report will assess the potential effects of the proposed waterpower project on the environment during both construction and operation. OPG has identified certain environmental components that it expects to be the focus of the proposed project and will present findings about the proposed project, environmental effects and proposed mitigation and monitoring measures. Consultation with Indigenous communities and the public is an integral component of this process and allows interested parties to provide comments on the project. You are invited to provide comments on the issues to be addressed. For information on the project proposal, to raise any issues or concerns, or to be placed on the project’s mailing list, please contact one of the individuals identified below. If the project proceeds as scheduled, construction could commence in 2020. The second open house has been rescheduled as follows: Monday, June 17, 2019, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Calabogie Community Hall, 574 Mill Street, Calabogie, Ontario, K0J 1H0 The open house will provide the public with more information about the Proposed Undertaking. Anyone who attends will have the opportunity to speak directly with representatives from OPG and their environmental consulting team with regard to the OWA Class EA. OPG has retained Arcadis Canada Inc. to undertake the Class EA process. For more information, please contact: For more details, please visit calabogiegs.com. Under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Environmental Assessment Act, unless otherwise stated in the submission, any personal information such as name, address, telephone number and property location included in a submission will become part of the public record files for this matter and will be released, if requested, to any person.

With fewer recreational and social opportunities than is offered in larger centres, idle hands really can lead to, well, the devil's work. Our own newspaper building in Renfrew was recently the subject of multiple acts of graffiti (and while it's not been proven youth are at fault, evidence indicates that's likely the case). However, and on a daily basis, we are exposed to the amazing efforts and accomplishments of the many local youth who are shaping the future of our communities. Renfrew Collegiate Institute just capped off an impressive run of Relay for Life events that resulted in a final tally of more than $1 million raised for the Canadian Cancer Society - their efforts set them at the top of the list of highest fundraising schools in the country. St. Joseph's Catholic High School, which every two years chooses a local, as well as an international charity, to support, is wrapping up two years of amazing support for Hospice Renfrew. Arnprior District High School students are making headlines with the concert band's recent securing of an elusive gold medal at Musicfest Nationals, as well as a silver for the Red Velvet choir. Students from all schools organized and gathered for student-led walkouts earlier this year to protest provincial funding cuts to education. The powerful, peaceful protests demonstrated that not only do youth care about what's going on in the world around them, they're prepared to take action to make sure their voices are heard. Each week, we hear about these impressive youth in our communities, and often we tell you their stories. In 2018, the Renfrew County Youth Network (RCYN), a collaborative of 52 youth, community members, agencies and organizations with the vision to support all young people 12 to 25 years to become healthy and resilient, completed a Renfrew County Youth Needs Assessment Report. Recommendations included: Create a movement which is rooted in shared values and shared goals with a diverse group of youth and other partners; build upon the strengths of the RCYN and its membership to work together on creating the youth strategy while members identify how/what they can share to help create the movement; continue to create space for youth to share ideas and experiences to influence a youth strategy while recruiting and engaging diverse youth; have fun! Relationships will be developed, and some will be lifelong. Foster relationships between youth and relationships between youth and adults, where both benefit from each other greatly. What we need to do, on every level (governments, communities, individually), particularly in our rural communities, is support our youth, guide them, give them the resources, tools and opportunities to ensure positive growth, learning and ultimately - success. After all, they’re leading us into the future, and we’re excited to see what that will bring.

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PROMISES MADE, PROMISES KEPT? To the editor: Doug Ford is out to change the way this province does beer. Unfortunately, we taxpayers will pay significantly for the breaking up of the Master Framework Agreement between the government and the brewers. The government is now officially in breach of contract, a situation that will likely result in significant damages being awarded to the Beer Store, at a minimum of $100 million but calculated by many to be in excess of $1 billion. Ford Nation calls criticism of this move fearmongering, but regardless of their view, it's other words that come to my mind - words like incompetence and abusive negligence. The government says we needn't fear, because they're going to simply legislate those legal niceties away, despite the fact that the Master Framework clearly stipulates that the Crown is a legally binding
partner to the agreement and can't hide behind legislation in order to ride roughshod over it. In short, there are penalties, and rightly so; a deal, after all, is a deal. The Beer Store has demonstrated good faith by operating in a manner consistent with the terms of the agreement, investing more than $100 million in store upgrades and improvements in customer experience. New hires and employee training have been implemented to bring the Beer Store completely into line with the deal, now and for the remainder of its term. If, on their part, the brewers were to renege on the agreement for any reason, they would face significant legal consequences. But it seems if the government rips it up, they have the ability and willingness to change the rules of legal accountability midstream. Hardly appropriate or fair. Many will recall that the Master Agreement was the result of work by one Ed Clark, former chair of TD Bank, who worked for the Liberals as a $1/year consultant. It's now being
ripped up on the advice of Ken Hughes, whom the government hired at a cool $1000/day. Hughes is a former Conservative politician from Alberta. Treasurer Vic Fedeli's assurances aside, jobs will be lost, penalties will be paid, public money will be squandered, beer will be more expensive, some Conservatives will be richer than before, and the rest of us will pay for it. For me, the issue is less about beer than it is about integrity. For Ford, it's about petulance and vindictiveness toward the former Wynne government. Legal contracts are promises made. Whatever happened to that whole "promises made/promises kept" thing? Or are those just words that look good on stickers?

A BULL MOOSE MEETS ITS MATCH MICHAEL RUNTZ WRITES ABOUT A DAVID AND GOLIATH EXPERIENCE IN THE FOREST MICHAEL RUNTZ Column
When birds have young, they protect them in different ways. Some attempt to lure away the predator, offering themselves as apparent easy targets until the predator gets too close, miraculously recovering just in time to keep beyond its reach, continuing this game until the danger is far removed. Other birds take a more aggressive approach, attacking the intruder with claw and beak. Some have the equipment to inflict serious injury; many years ago a photographer lost an eye when he foolishly
peered into the entrance of a small, cavity-dwelling owl's nest in a southwestern desert. The amount of energy and risk put into defending their young varies between species. That difference is largely due to what happens after the eggs hatch. Killdeer put on a convincing broken-wing act, pathetically calling while flopping around on the ground, displaying orange feathers on the tail and rump that simulate a bloody wound. However, the intensity and duration of that act varies with the development of the eggs. Killdeer eggs take around three and a half weeks to hatch. At first, the nest defence is weak, the birds protesting with a few calls and a feeble distrac-

But if a predator approaches a nest near hatching time, the parents give an all-out display, coming dangerously close to the predator as they desperately try to lure it away. After the eggs hatch, this defence starts to wane. Killdeer young are nidifugous, which means they

toward it, continuously uttering loud, rattling calls. The moose stopped, confused by this lively blockade. Then the cranes started leaping toward it, the long legs of one coming close to the bull's head. The moose finally had enough and retreated. The cranes' behaviour clearly revealed they had a nest nearby. It is remarkable that an eight-pound bird could intimidate an animal more than 100 times its mass. But then David slew Goliath! This week the Renfrew Art Guild explores the world of art trading cards. While sports trading cards emerged as collectibles in the 1880s, Art Trading Cards, or ATCs as they are known, are a more recent arrival on the scene. It is common for art groups of many types to have a session where those present produce original small artworks on 2.5 by 3.5 inch card stock and exchange them at the end of the meeting. Those in attendance have fun using all manner of paints, pens and inks, cuttings, tools and attachments to create miniature works, often with a fun theme. You don't need to be an
artist to create fun images that others will want to trade for. Some folks go to many of these sessions and keep their collectibles in labelled plastic sleeves. Though we have materials to share you may want to bring a bag of incidentals like scissors, magazines, glue sticks, Sharpie pens and other flotsam that you have lying around. While craft stores and online sources have ATC board which you can order, we will have varied mounting boards on hand.
This year's Art In The Park is Saturday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the caboose in Haramis Park. We will have close to 40 exhibitors again this year, kid's zone, art battle, drinks and food, ample parking and it's all free. We have a donation jar for those who wish to add their contributions to our scholarship funds for our three area high schools. Our art card meeting is Tuesday, June 11 at 7 p.m. downstairs at Trinity St. Andrew's. Please use the Quarry Avenue entrance. Hope to see you there.
abandon the nest immediately after hatching. Because young killdeer can scatter and hide, the odds of most escaping a predatory attack is high, so the parents reduce their own risk by giving a weaker display. Songbirds produce young that are nidicolous (nest loving). After hatching, the brood remains helpless in the nest until
they fledge. Thus, the parents produce their strongest defence of the nest and its contents just before the young gain the ability to fly, the time when their investment is at its greatest. In both strategies, adult birds risk more when they stand to lose the most. Sandhill cranes are now relatively common inhabitants of this area. These magnificent birds build their nests in wetlands, creating a mound of material surrounded by water, like a castle with a moat. Their nidifugous young swim and walk within eight hours of hatching and so parental defence is strongest as hatching time approaches. Recently I saw a bull moose meandering across a peatland near Rousseau. At the far end of this wetland stood a pair of sandhill cranes. I watched with fascination as the great beast approached them. When the moose was only metres away they raised their wings and began walking

GREATER MADAWASKA RESCUE VAN
The Township of Greater Madawaska Fire Department is the proud owner of a brand new rescue van. Just the Facts Talks first began in fall 2017 to purchase a new vehicle to replace the older 1993 RCMP Command Centre. "This has been a long time coming for sure," Fire Chief Darryl Wagner said. "Our old vehicle was bought used, so it is nice to get a brand new van knowing we will have many years with it." The van, a Ford F550 XL, boasts many features, including extra room for equipment and four-wheel drive. "The tires are especially nice on this vehicle because with our older one we couldn't go down some of the older roads," Station Chief David Ripmeester said. "Now we can access those roads if need be." In addition, Wagner said parts could easily be removed and replaced, calling it a "plug and play" vehicle. "It's a really nice and convenient feature because say, for example, the chassis went, we could take it out and put a new one in

Wagner mentioned the van will be a bit heavy on gas for the first while, but that is to be expected with any new vehicle. Battleshield Industries Limited, a company in Vars, Ont. that specializes in fire equipment, manufactured the van. "The company was very good to us and I highly recommend them for any fire equipment needs," Wagner said. "The department probably won't be needing another vehicle until after I'm retired."
The total cost for the van was $122,000 plus tax. The fire department was expected to show off the new rescue van June 1 during a training day.

REMEMBERING RENFREW SOLDIER WHO MADE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE KURT JOHNSON Private Ted Millar, a Renfrew lad only 19 years old, came ashore June 6, 1944 on Juno Beach among the 10,500 Canadians participating in the invasion of Normandy. As we mark the 75th anniversary of DDay, we should remember the sacrifice of Millar and many others from the Ottawa Valley. On D-Day plus one, his regiment, the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, had pushed inland about 16 kilometres as far as Authie, outside of Caen, France. But Millar and many of his comrade-at-arms were unfortunately captured by the Germans. In a cruel twist of fate, the Canadians were taken as prisoners-ofwar to nearby Ardenne Abbey, where fanatical troops of 12th SS Panzer "Hitlerjugend" (Hitler Youth) carried out a "no prisoners" order by the infamous Col. Kurt Meyer. It meant death for those 20 soldiers in the abbey, as well as 150 others in the vicinity. The "Ardenne Abbey Massacre" is called one of the worst war

Private George Edward "Ted" Millar was among those prisoners who were individually led into the abbey garden and executed, violating the Geneva Convention. Their hidden bodies were not discovered until winter that year and in the spring of 1945. His name "Pte. Millar G.E" is listed on a brass plaque at the Ardenne Abbey memorial to the "Canadian soldiers murdered in this
garden ..." The inscriptions also states: "They are dead but not forgotten." His photograph is on a garden wall, commemorating them (In Renfrew's Low Square, the town cenotaph bears his name). His tragic death ended the dreams for his fiancée, Edna Atkinson, a British Air Force member who was stationed in London, England. After dating for a year, they were engaged to be married as soon as Millar returned from the war.

He also had planned to go into partnership with his father at the family's bake shop at 7 Lochiel St., Renfrew. George Wellington Millar who died in 1958 had served in the First World War with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. His mother was Inez Grace Spencerley. Ted Millar was an only child and his family worshipped at Trinity St. Andrew's United Church. He attended Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) for Grade 9. For years after the war, portrait photographs of
the RCI's war dead, such as Ted Millar, hung on the school walls outside the principal's office in the old building. When he joined the militia in the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment, Ted Millar had given his year of birth as 1923, instead of 1925. Embarrassingly, his lie was discovered a year later and resulted in a discharge in 1941. However, he re-enlisted in Brockville on April 20, 1942 in the active army. Perhaps, he looked much older as he stood fivefeet-10 inches and weighed 182 pounds. Millar is buried in the Bretteville-Sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery where 2,872 Canadians were laid to rest, a short distance from the Normandy beaches. The inscription on his headstone, which was chosen by the family, reads: "I think I see him as he bade goodbye and left us forever in a distant land to die." Kurt Johnson is a retired Ottawa Citizen journalist who is researching the life stories of Ottawa Valley soldiers killed in the Second World War.

MIDTOWN REPEAT CHAMPIONS IN RENFREW LADIES BASKETBALL ROB WARREN Another season of Renfrew ladies basketball has wrapped up with Midtown Flooring securing the championship for the second straight year. Every time the sixth place Frances/Lemke Cooperators would score to close to within four points in quarterfinal action, the third place Lumber Jills would counter. This continued for 20 minutes. The Cooperators rallied during the last four minutes, however, and stole
their way into the semis 3635. Becky Shallenberg led the charge with 13 of her 17 points in the second half. When the Reunions defeat a higher ranked team it is not considered an upset. Fifth place Reunions advanced by downing the fourth place Basket Brawlers 39-27. Mae Donohue and Hillary McMillan combined for 25 points. The Cooperators played another great game, this time netting 35 points against the top ranked Renfrew Eye Clinic in semi final

48 points. Tasha Latendresse, Katie Dolan, and Tiffany Rowan combined for 30 of those points. In spite of being outshot from the charity stripe (14/25 vs. 4/22) by the Reunions, Midtown Flooring advanced by a score of 40-23. Sarah Dougherty netted 15 points. In final action, Midtown Flooring opened an early
six-point lead but couldn't extend it over the REC. Although REC often pulled to within one point, they couldn't catch Midtown. A stingy Midtown defence kept all but four of REC snipers off the boards. Morgan Welburn, Katie Dolan, and Tasha Latendresse combined for 35 of REC's 37 points. Sarah Dougherty of
Midtown led all scorers with 17 of Midtown's 40 points. Although Midtown missed 23 free throws, two clutch makes by Ruby Lynn Osipenko in the dying seconds gave Midtown the cushion it needed. Rob Warren is the convener of Renfrew ladies basketball.

SCOUTS DESCEND ON FITZROY FOR 2019 CAMPOREE TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com It was a weekend of fun, challenges and friendships at Fitzroy Provincial Park. The 2019 Carleton Area Camporee took place May 24-26, with hundreds of youth (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts), ages five to 14, participating. Festivities in the great outdoors were plentiful, including games and challenges. Not only did scouting youth from Arnprior, Carp, Cobden, Kanata, Kinburn, Richmond and Stittsville experience adventure, they developed leadership and camping skills and practiced wilderness safety. They were challenged in a series of activities and games. Representing the 1st Cobden Scout group: Payton Lucas, Rogan Coulas, Gabriel Staigh, Brennan Byce, Aaron Coulas and Wade Matheson. Oliver Quenneville of 2nd Arnprior Scouting joined them. A few of the activities the local group enjoyed encompassed trebuchets, crossbows, canoes and fishing, just to name a few. One of the more popular activities on Saturday was the trebuchet station, hosted by the 7th Kanata Scout group. The three trebuchets, using a swinging arm, tossed bags of flour at targets.

WHITEWATER LIBRARY CELEBRATES SHAKESPEARE'S WOMEN
CATCH THE VIBE AT BITTERSWEET GALLERY IN BURNSTOWN CHERYL BABINEAU Come celebrate the remarkable and focused work of two women (artist and scientist) and their teams while supporting a good cause with "Catch the Vibe!" Since 2001, Bittersweet Gallery has showcased the works of jewelry designer Anne-Marie Chagnon, after she was discovered at a show in Montreal. Every year for more than a decade, gallery owner Cheryl Babineau and husband/artist Richard Gill celebrate her latest collection with a trunk show and spring open house that benefits ovarian cancer research by donating a portion of the proceeds from the popular event. Funds raised go directly to Dr. Barbara Vanderhyden and her research team at the University of Ottawa. New to the event this year, the gallery is pleased to announce the addition of live

The Dickerson Airplane, an uncommon collaboration of percussion, guitar and vocals, will play an eclectic fusion of popular rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues influences from the 60s to 90s, providing some background vibe to the event. "Vibrations" opens at the Bittersweet Gallery in Burnstown on June 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and there will be door prizes of jewelry, art and sculptures. Cheryl Babineau is the owner of the Bittersweet Gallery in Burnstown.
Last year, in its inaugural fundraising series called "Encounters with Great Writers," the Whitewater Region Public Library Board featured solo actors performing the works of a diverse group: Gospel writer St. Mark, novelist Lucy Maud Montgomery, and poet Robert Service. For 2019, the board will again feature three events. There will be an encore of Service's Yukon ballads with actor Conrad Boyce in September. The Opeongo Readers' Theatre of Barry's Bay will re-enact the famed radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds, by science fiction writer H.G. Wells, in October, on the night before Halloween. The series will kickoff in June, however, with the work of perhaps the most respected English writer of all, in an evening called

"Great Women of Shakespeare." The performance features female characters from 20 different plays, brought to life by seven young actresses from Opeongo High School (OHS), with a supporting cast of three young men. "All you favourites are here," says director Conrad Boyce, a Cobden actor and theatrical producer who worked with OHS's Odyssey Theatre troupe on its recent hit production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. "We have Juliet, Ophelia and Lady Macbeth, Cleopatra, Desdemona, Portia from The Merchant of Venice, Cordelia from King Lear, Rosalind from As You Like It, and many, many more. The audience will be familiar with many of the scenes and speeches, like Romeo and Juliet's passionate balcony scene or Cleopatra's tragic death scene, but I can promise you a few surprises as well. Tamara from Titus Andronicus or Lady Percy from Henry IV, for instance, aren't among the Bard's most famous characters, but they're very strong women nonetheless, with some memorable things to say." There will be two performances, Wednesday and Thursday June 12 and 13, 7 p.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Cobden. Tickets are $20, available in advance at The Candle Wick in Cobden, or you can reserve by emailing Boyce at conradboyce@powergate.ca. Tickets will also be available at the door, with all proceeds going to support the library board's three branches in Cobden, Beachburg, and Forester's Falls.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

(nee Baird) Mary Baird Lougheed was born October 31st, 1925. She passed away peacefully at the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital early morning May 29, 2019. Loving wife of Jack Lougheed for almost 67 years. Loving mother to Richard (Margaret), Peter (Jan), Kathy (Jim) and Barb (Dave) and grandmother of 9 special grandchildren and 11 wonderful greatgrandchildren. During World War II Mary served as a WREN in the Canadian Navy. Later, she trained as a nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Following that, she nursed at the Toronto Sick Kids Hospital, Vancouver General and Arnprior Hospital. After marriage in 1952, she served with her husband, Jack, who was a United Church minister in Pelly, Saskatchewan. She and Jack served as missionaries in India from 1954 to 1959. Then they had pastorates in Kirkland Lake and Shawinigan, Quebec. They lived in Oshawa from 1968 to 1980 and then had a final pastorate in Almonte from 1980 to 1988. In 1988, they retired to the Kedey Baird House in Fitzroy Harbour where she was born beside her beloved Ottawa River. She was a talented artist, knitter, sewer and gardener, and brought her keen sense of design and colour to every project she took on. She was also an historian who wrote a wonderful history of her family and Fitzroy Harbour. She had a whimsical sense of humour and a young spirit that never grew old. We will miss her deeply. Visitations were at the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street North, Arnprior Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral was held at the Bethel St. Andrew’s United Church in Fitzroy Harbour on Saturday June 1st at 2:00 p.m. Interment Whyte’s Cemetery, Fitzroy Harbour at a later date. GOULET FUNERAL HOME
Renfrew Mercury
(October 11, 1941-May 16, 2019) Survived by his beloved wife Vivienne (Kwissa), his brothers-in-law Donald Bedford (Christine) and Richard Kwissa (Joan); his nieces Tracy and Tobi Kwissa and their children Emily, Fletcher and Megan, Sophie and Alexander. Predeceased by his parents John and Bertha (Messenger) and his brother Raymond. Howard emigrated from England to Ottawa in September, 1967, just in time to celebrate his 26th birthday in October and enjoy Expo 67 in Montreal. His first year was lived apartment sharing with a friend who was spending Howard’s contributions to their living expenses behind his back and disappeared back to England when found out. As co-signer, Howard had to take on a large debt for which he wasn’t responsible. Luckily for me, he moved in with my family as a boarder “until he could get things sorted out” and we married two and a half years later in 1971. Our first year of married life was spent traveling to British Columbia and back to Ontario while Howard audited the General Tire stores in the western provinces. The New Westminster stay was particularly nice, lasting close to five months. We stayed at a hotel bachelor apartment directly across the street from the store. It was like having our first home and I could look from the 4th floor balcony to see Howard crossing the road. We traded in our first “baby”, a 1967 Pontiac Firebird that had barely got us through the Rocky Mountains from Edmonton, for a 1970 Pontiac GTO muscle car. I think that was always our favourite set of wheels and earned me my only speeding ticket! We bought our first house in the countryside in 1979 and Howard put his enjoyment of reading DIY books to good use in building decks, raised gardens, and creating lovely flower beds. His interests moved more to the indoors when home and work computers evolved. He had a natural skill working on the computer and helping others with work and home projects. Howard and I had always shared a mutual love of music and a large accomplishment on his part was to create the first extensive website on jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. He spent hours and months inputting information as a tribute to the great musician and received much recognition and appreciation for his efforts. It surprised me that eventually he couldn’t go on with the project. I thought it was because other sites on Monk were appearing on the Internet but now I think it was because he was slowly becoming ill. Howard retired from his work with the City of Ottawa, Social Services, in 2007. He described it as being his “last job and his best job”. I thought he would have many years ahead of him to enjoy a well-deserved retirement and that his need to start walking with a cane was just from age and fatigue. We went through several house moves in a short space of time trying to downsize and improve our finances. Howard was one of the brightest people I knew but was suddenly having difficulty keeping the car from drifting to the right when he drove, repeating things I had just said as though they were original thoughts, always saying “I’m just getting old”. It took two years to convince our family doctor that something was wrong. It took the neurologist just a matter of minutes to diagnose the problem as PSP, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. I think we just looked blank at the diagnosis having never heard of it before but I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach by the words, “I’m very sorry”. I knew then that this was something that couldn’t be fixed and our time remaining would be drastically different. PSP is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s Disease. Sadly, there is no cure and as the name says, it’s progressive. It’s main symptoms are loss of balance and falling backward, difficulty looking up and down, eye sensitivity to light, and weakening of the throat muscles leading to pneumonia. Howard battled the disease for eight years but eventually made the choice to let it run its course. His body wasted away and he had no strength left. He spent his last year living at the Hilltop Manor, Merrickville. The staff did their best to keep him as comfortable as possible in his final days and marvelled at how long he held on. I think it was a great unhappiness for both me and them when he let go. Our time together wasn’t always perfect, Papa, but one thing I told you often will always be true: You always were and always will be my very best friend. I will miss you every day. I hope your suffering is over and your spirit is with past family, friends, and the many lovely “critters” that shared our lives. All my love, Vivienne In lieu of flowers donations in Memory of Howard may be made to the Cure PSP organization. Arrangements entrusted to the, Byers Funeral Home, South Mountain (613-989-3836). DANDELIONS BROUGHT A SMILE TO FATHER'S FACE BUMPER CROP MEANT PLENTY OF HOMEMADE WINE, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column
Father was in his glory: the dandelions were in full bloom, and as thick as thieves. They were even covering the west hill, which Father said never happened! That meant there would be a good batch for his dandelion wine, and not a day too soon. Aunt Bertha and Uncle Alec had been over for a game of euchre in the past week, and the dregs of the last bottle brought up from the cellar had been polished off over the evening.
All the tubing, pails and pans had been scoured, and the bottles saved as each bottle was drained over the past year and had been boiled on the back of the Findlay Oval. Everything was ready except of course, for picking the dandelions. It was a job that we five children were facing, and not one of us relished it one bit! Each plant had to be stripped of its leaves and put in a special basket, and the bright blossoms in another; Father was only interested in the blossoms. Mother would boil the leaves, toss them with butter and salt and pepper, and they would appear on our supper table
in due course. The remaining stocks were left to die. It didn't matter how many dandelions we picked, there always seemed to be another batch appearing in a few days! Since it was still crop planting time, and getting the fields into shape, Father of course could only work on his winemaking at night, and that was after the chores were done. It always amazed me how, at any other time, he would collapse in a chair after supper with his feet on the oven door and the Ottawa Farm Journal in his lap, and fall asleep almost as soon as he sat down. Making his dandelion wine seemed to give him energy. I had no idea how the process went. I knew that the
blossoms were boiled, strained, tubed and the juice bottled eventually, but the less I knew about the procedure, the better I liked it. And it had to do with bad Marguerite, the bane of my life at the Northcote School! Her parents, she told me time and again, never had anything even remotely like wine or beer pass their lips. Her mother went into Renfrew regularly to go to the Women's Temperance Union. I wasn't at all interested in what her mother did. What I was interested in, and in fact what kept me awake at night, was what Marguerite told me could happen to my father if he was ever caught making dandelion wine - he'd go straight to jail!
She rhymed off the names of several people I had never heard of, who were at that very moment locked up in Renfrew, serving a good long sentence for making their own wine and beer. She said she knew for a fact that very likely they would rot in jail and never again see the light of day, all because they made their own homebrew! I could picture my poor father. Probably, they wouldn't even let him change out of his work overalls and into a decent pair of pants before hauling him off. Who would do the chores and plant the crops and get enough wood cut to keep us warm over the winter? I knew I had to go to my sister Audrey and tell her about my anguish over what could happen to our dear father. Audrey said that I wasn't to believe a word of

what bad Marguerite said. And when I asked her how she could be so sure, she said because the last time Marguerite's father had been at our house to talk to Father about running in the last election and was looking for Father's vote, he sat at the very kitchen table we were sitting at; he had a cigar in one hand, and a full glass of dandelion wine in the other! I gave Audrey a big hug, and when Father sent us back out to gather more dandelions, the job didn't seem to be so bad after all. If the wine gave my father a bit of pleasure, that was fine with me ... and a pox on bad Marguerite!
