The 24-year old man charged in the 2016 crash that killed Doug and Joan Foster appeared in court on May 29. The collision happened last December on March Road near Carp. The crash claimed the lives of two well-known community citizens: Doug ran Foster’s Construction for decades, and Joan operated the salon Hairitage in Renfrew for 39 years. They just retired. John Anstie of Kanata, was charged in March with two counts each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and criminal negligence causing death. Anstie has elected a judge and jury trial. His next scheduled court appearance is in Ottawa Superior court July 17, 2018. None of the charges have been proven in a court of law.

Public meeting draws support for Renfrew to build a pool TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Build it and they will come. Those were Ulla Schilling’s final words to Renfrew town staff at a public meeting on the proposed recreation options on Monday, May 29 at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. On June 1, the town cancelled its special council meeting for June 6 to review the feedback. The meeting will be rescheduled at a later date. “After the two town hall meetings we received some great feedback and we want to do our due diligence and not rush such an large and difficult decision with out being detailed and thorough,” said Tom Sidney, recreation chair after the meeting had been cancelled. Schilling received a large round of applause after she said the town definitely needs a pool. It’s an idea she has supported in walk-a-thons since 1968. She added that a second ice pad would be a benefit but the town needs a pool. The three proposed options that were discussed are: a new recreation centre and second ice pad; new recreation centre and aquatic facility; and new recreation centre, second ice pad and aquatic facility. More than 200 people attended two public meetings. In the evening ses-

Renfrew recreation director Kevin Hill addresses the large crowd at the open house meeting to discuss the proposed recreation options on Monday, May 29 at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. sion more than 22 people questioned the proposals with many voicing support for a new pool. Some questioned the financials for the three proposals, which range from $8 million to $12 million and could cost taxpayers up to a 6.8 per cent tax increase. Some of the many arguments for a pool included a place for people with disabilities to exercise, an attraction to bring people in and teaching kids to swim. More than one person expressed the sentiment that children/teens need something to do. Krysta Kentfield has lived in Renfrew for 11 years and says a lot of her friends have moved away because there is nothing for young families. “This issue has been brought up a

number of times, we need to focus on what we don’t have, we need a pool so everyone can swim, we need a pool,” said Kentfield. “An extra ice pad is too much.” One person said getting a pool was a no brainer and as a 30-year resident of the town he fully supported an aquatic centre and was more than happy to pay his share as it would be a landmark project. Tom Anderson spoke highly of recreation director Kevin Hill and said under his leadership it would be done right; however he brought up a number of key points. “I’m concerned because I feel like it’s a railroad, all of a sudden it’s a quick meeting, it’s a little hard to absorb it all tonight,” said Anderson.

He questioned if the proposals would affect the town’s debt capacity, and referenced the numbers in the last Master Plan survey that more than 80 per cent wanted a pool however, 70 per cent don’t want a tax increase of more than one per cent. “Under three per cent I am a big supporter, over that it is not respecting the wishes of the taxpayers,” said Anderson. Dr. Andrea Dipaolo spoke on the benefits of a pool from two different perspectives; as a former Ivy League swimmer and a doctor at the Bonnechere Manor. “I think we have to move away from if, but how we are going to make a pool happen. If not, this community will not survive,” said Dipaolo. “I

think we need to look at how we make this happen with the lowest price tag.” He spoke of the many health benefits for both the young and old. Leo Hall, who has been on the pool committee for 15 years, said this has been a long divisive issue in the community. He questioned the association with the Kanata Lasers hockey team coming to Renfrew. Staff informed him research for a second ice surface was well under way before they approached the town. The only person to speak in favour of a second ice-pad was local businessman Jim Miller as he thought it was a common misconception that people who want ice time can get it, when in reality a lot of ringette/hockey players have to travel out of town for ice. “Kevin’s numbers tell the story he has 51 hours (of prime time) committed already and that was done in a matter of months with user groups, I think there is the potential for a lot more ice sports: broomball, sledge hockey, but there is no time,” said Miller. “We probably do need a pool but don’t disregard the fact that a lot of kids and adults are going out of town to get ice.” As to a pool he said it was great to have but as it serves a small part of the community is it worth the expense?

Odies Kingburger hit by thieves The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating after five hanging flower baskets were stolen from Odies Kingburger parking lot on Stewart Street in Renfrew last week sometime overnight. A roots bag was stolen from an unlocked vehicle overnight May 28. The bag contained a wallet with identification and other items. The vehicle was parked on Prince Ave. W in Renfrew at the time. Sometime between 2 to 4:30 a.m. on Monday, May 29 someone stole a wallet from an unlocked vehicle while it was parked on Joffre Ave. in Renfrew. The investigation is continuing as the thief attempted to access bank accounts with stolen bankcards. A boat motor was stolen from a property on Green Meadow Road in Greater Madawaska Township between 6 p.m. June 1 and 7 a.m. June 2. The motor is a 2016 grey Yamaha F9.9hp Short Shaft outboard boat motor. A chain was cut to steal the motor.

PC Carlvin Burgins is investigating. A boat motor was also stolen from a back yard at a residence on Lochiel St. in Renfrew. The older model 15 horse power Evinrude motor plus the gas tank were missing. The motor and gas tank were last seen on Wednesday evening, May 31 and reported stolen Friday June 2. PC Kevin Rebertz is investigating. A large quantity of cosmetics was stolen from Rexall in Renfrew during the evening of Saturday, June 3. Several hundred tubes of lipstick were reported stolen from the store. PC Mark Yarmel is investigating. Domestic Violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated seven domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with forcible confinement, pointing a firearm, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; another male was charged with fail to comply with an undertaking and breach of probation. No other criminal

OPP to carry naloxone The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will provide naloxone to all frontline members and to those in designated specialized units. Each frontline officer is being issued a kit with two doses of naloxone nasal spray while on duty, while members of selected specialized units, such as Drug Enforcement Units and Community Street Crime Units, will each be issued a personal kit. The use of personal protective equipment will be mandatory while conducting suspected drug searches, seizures and/or sampling to help ensure the safety of OPP officers. Frontline members will be required to wear protective equipment including a respiratory mask, safety glasses or goggles, nitrile gloves and long sleeve shirt or jacket. Health Canada testing determined fentanyl was

present in 114 OPP seizures in 2016 from the mainly rural communities the OPP serves, demonstrating it is an emerging and ongoing concern in all parts of Ontario. Testing results for 2017 are not yet available but the number of seizures with fentanyl present appears to be similar to 2016 levels. The primary purpose of the naloxone is for use if an officer is exposed, however, if there is a life-threatening situation and emergency medical services are not immediately available, officers will be trained to use it on a member of the public. The naloxone kits are an additional tool that OPP officers will be able to use to help keep our communities safe. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that can reverse an opioid overdose for approximately 20 minutes to one hour, depending on the strength of the opioid.

offences took place. Break and Enter Over the weekend of May 27 to 29 someone stole three leather saddles. The thief entered an unlocked shed at a property on Highway 17 in Whitewater Region where the saddles were stored and stole them. PC Mark Yarmel is investigating. Several buildings at the Zion Hill Camp in Whitewater Region were broken into sometime between May 30 and June 1. Stolen property

included several water nozzles each with three taps, two florescent yellow caution signs shaped like children playing, and a yellow extension cord. PC Jeff Cassidy is investigating. Impaired Drivers On Monday, May 29 OPP officers responded to a report of a possible impaired driver. The female suspect had reported driven to a parking lot on O’Brien Road in Renfrew and was last seen walking away on Gillan Road. Officers located the female at a residence

on Gillan Road where she was arrested for impaired care or control of a motor vehicle. She was transported to the OPP detachment for breath tests. As a result of the investigation a 63-year old female of Renfrew was charged with impaired care or control of a motor vehicle, and care or control of a motor vehicle with over 80mgs. She was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on June 28. PC Sarah Darraugh led the investigation.

Chamber of Commerce honours local businesses and volunteers TIFFANY LEPACK

Patti Dillabough has been crowned Renfrew’s Citizen of the Year. In total, 10 awards were handed out on June 1 at The Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce Community Awards Celebration — in Bond, James Bond style — at A Night at the Casino at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Dillabough thanked her parents, who were also heavily involved in the community, the chamber and the other nominees. “I love volunteering and working for the community,” she told the large crowd. “It’s very exciting, and I was honoured just to be nominated along with the other wonderful nominees.” Dillabough said she was very honoured and humbled by the nomination. Also nominated were Connie Legg and Jim Miller. “There are so many wonderful people in the community that it’s really nice to be recognized,” said Dillabough, who is heavily involved in the Miss Teen Ontario East Pageant, advocates for Childhood Cancer Awareness, and helps with the Relay for Life,

the Kinettes and more. “I am so fortunate to have a supportive family; my husband Bob, Garry and Jackie and Paige are always behind me in everything I do,” said Dillabough. Volunteering runs in her family. Her mom Gladys Sidock won the Citizen of the Year Award, with her husband Doug Sidock, in 1990. Her daughter Paige also won the Youth Citizen of the Year award in 2013. “It’s pretty incredible, my parents were both wonderful role models, my mom is extremely busy and is always volunteering,” said Dillabough. “I think when you are brought up that way and start at a young age, you appreciate what it takes to put events on and raise money for certain charities, it just becomes part of your nature and you just do it.” As a role model to many in her community, she encourages everyone to find something they are passionate about and they too will get hooked in volunteering. As chamber president Amy Rule welcomed everyone, she said they were about to recognize and celebrate a number outstanding and excep-

tional people, and all of the nominees shared a common thread. “They all possess the passion, drive and determination to make Renfrew and area a better place to live; to work; to conduct business, to invest in, or just spend time visiting here,” said Rule. “Their commitment to our community each and every day is beyond words, and for that we thank you.” The evening was hosted by Mel Blimkie and Kent Tubman, who really embraced their inner Bond as the results were sealed in a suitcase and handcuffed to Blimkie. The first award of the night was the best New Business award to Valley Guiding and Outfitting (VGO). “It was an honour to be nominated with the people in the category with us. I would just like to thank my family who have been very supportive, as well as the community, and all of the other businesses who have helped us out,” said Phil Lambert, owner at VGO. “We try and keep everything local and it’s been an honour. Thank you very much.” VGO is a family owned business, located in Castleford, offering guided

fishing tours, ice hut rentals, food plot cultivator rental, hunting property consulting services, seminars and cottage rental. Also nominated was Chanto and Co. and Vintage Kettle. This was the first year for the Agri-Business of the Year, which was awarded to The Renfrew Agricultural Society. “Thank you very much on behalf of all of the directors, volunteers and everybody that comes out to the Renfrew fair, I would also like to congratulate Barclay Dick and Son Farm for being nominated, they are great supporters of the Renfrew Fair, and I hope to see everyone out to the Renfrew Fair this year. We got some new and exciting things coming, so please come on out and support us,” said Bob McMullin, fair board president. The 163rd edition of the fair is set for Sept. 6 to 10. Rule presented the award for Chamber Member of the Year to Jean Hughes, myFM Radio. “The recipient is someone who has shown over the years to be a team player and an asset to have on our team. She is there when needed

and always with a smile on her face,” said Rule. “No matter what event the Chamber of Commerce is attending or putting on, she is always there.” Hughes was quite shocked with the honour. “I’m truly speechless, I was totally not expecting this, it’s a great honour. I love being part of the Chamber and everything they do. The board is great,” said Hughes. “I truly don’t know what else to say, thank you very much.” The BIA Member of the Year is chosen by the BIA board of directors, and went to Scott’s Shoe Store. “I would just like to say thank you and congratulate the other nominees,” said Ian Scott. “I would also like to thank my staff because without a great staff you are just not in business. I thank the BIA, the chamber and just thank you very much.” Also nominated were Chanto and Co. and The Tea Room. The Industry of the Year went to Deslaurier Custom Cabinets. Jim Deslaurier said it was wonderful to be in a room of friends and fellow business people. See TIE, page 7

Tie for Young Person of the Year award goes to Leclaire and Hanniman From page 6

“You all really care about the town. I want to thank the Chamber of Commerce for all of the hard work they do in promoting all the good things us business people try and do,” said Deslaurier. “I feel if we are crazy enough to become entrepreneurs and try and run a business in this wonderful world we live in, it is nice to get recognized, so thank you for that.” He then shared an update on the business and what they went through after a devastating fire in 2009 and how the town, the Renfrew Industrial Commission and the chamber all supported them as they rebuilt, which helped them make a critical decision to stay in business. The Young Person of the Year was such a tough decision it ended up being a tie between Charlie Leclaire and

Mitchell Hanniman. Leclaire constantly organizes events and fundraisers to help the less fortunate such as selling lemonade and cookies in the summer to make ‘Blessing Bags’ and has a true passion to help others. Hanniman has helped over the years with Relay for Life, twice was student council president, volunteers with the food bank and Free the Children projects, and has travelled to Kenya and Tanzania to help build schools. Hanniman spoke for both of them as the young Leclaire was a little shy. “It is an honour to win this with Charlie, I am so glad we both have the opportunity to share this award. I know that Charlie has done a lot in the community as well,” said Hanniman.

“Personally, I would like to thank my family and friends for this opportunity, thank you all.” The President’s Award went to the Renfrew and Area Seniors’ Home Support Inc. Horton councillor and board member Dave Bennett thanked the Chamber as he accepted the award and noted this is their 30th anniversary. “This centre has become a hub of activity and a place many call their second home,” said Bennett. “We are very proud of the efforts, and thank those involved from the start, the volunteer advisory committee and all of the volunteers who gave over 3,500 hours of their time last year.” Some of the many programs they provide to benefit seniors and adults with disabilities include transportation, friendly visits, telephone as-

sistance, home maintenance, frozen meals, grocery delivery, client interventions and more. “One might ask how we support 1,000 individuals. We have an average of 85 to 100 volunteers coming to our aid. Each year these people support programs and supply flawless input to the organization,” said Bennett. The Community Champion of the Year was awarded to the Renfrew Legion Ladies Auxiliary, which is celebrating their 70th anniversary. They were very honoured to accept the award and hoped they were an asset to the community as they support many local groups and charities. Scott & Sons Hardware Ltd., which is marking their 100th anniversary this year, received the award for Outstanding Business Achievement.

“I am accepting this for everyone of you in business,” said Jeff Scott. “It’s an achievement to stay in business in today’s economy. Give yourselves a round of applause.” Lorne C. Scott founded the company in 1917. It was managed for many years by his sons Murray and Earl, and it is now in its third generation of management by Murray’s sons Jeff and Paul. Jeff thanked the chamber on behalf of his family and told the history of the business: that they once owned two hardware stores on the main street and the Ottawa House Hotel, and was the first store outside of Ottawa to use florescent lighting. The chamber also presented numerous Canada 150 certificates for local businesses that have hit business milestones.

A trillium by any other name Changing parties in politics usually never works out too well. There are a few exceptions, such as former Liberal MP and NDP provincial premier Bob Rae, but normally switching parties as an elected politician is a prescription for defeat and political oblivion in the ensuing election. So it will be interesting to follow the happenings in the new Kanata-Carleton provincial riding in next year’s election and see if former Progressive Conservative MPP Jack MacLaren, now a member of the new Trillium Party, will be re-elected or not. His participation in the election for the Trillium Party should have an impact on the PC vote in the riding. Whether he will be re-elected, just split the Tory vote, or have minimal impact remains to be seen. The new Kanata-Carleton riding is more urban than the existing Carleton-Mississippi Mills and this may reduce conservative strength somewhat, with or without Jack MacLaren’s ejection from the PC caucus and his switch to the ultra conservative Trillium Party. The Liberals may seize this opportunity of discord among conservative forces to run a strong candidate who might just sneak into office thanks to a vote split in the right-of-centre

ranks. Some insight might be found from the name of MacLaren’s new party affiliation, the Trillium Party. Trilliums, specifically white trilliums, have been the official flower for Ontario since 1937. If grown from seed, it takes a trillium up to two years just for the seed to germinate and then takes another five to seven years for the plant to bloom. In other words, a long process and very similar, we would suggest, to the future of the new party. If the Trillium Party were to “germinate” in two years and were to “bloom” in only five to seven years, we would rank that as an amazing political story. It is also known that if the leaves and flower of a trillium are picked, the plant will die as it will lack any means to produce the energy needed to survive the cold blasts of winter. If MacLaren fails to win for the Trillium Party in the upcoming election, the party may die just like a picked trillium, lacking the means to produce the energy needed to survive the blasts of the political weather in this province. MacLaren’s decision to switch parties is a story that promises an interesting ending come election season.

Christine ‘Tuffy’ Hough, born Oct. 9, 1969 in Renfrew, is a retired Canadian pairs skater. With partner Doug Ladret, Hough won the 1988 Canadian Figure Skating Championships. Hough received her nickname Tuffy, from her stepfather because she did daring skating moves. Hough competed early in her career with Kevin Wheeler, winning the 1982 novice title. Later, Hough teamed up with Ladret, and in 1985 won the bronze medal at Canadian nationals. Their best season was 1987-8, when they won the national title as well as Skate Canada International. The pair competed in the Winter Olympics twice, in 1988 and 1992, finishing in the top 10 both times. They retired fol-

Swimming in debt

To the editor: There seems to be a great haste to put Renfrew residents further in debt over the pool and second ice surface. There are councillors who want to push this ahead with very little public input. We are already paying billions of dollars of interest on our provincial and federal debt. Our one ice surface is already subsidized by the taxpayer. People on fixed incomes cannot pay more taxes or rent. There is a great demand already at the food bank. Don’t shove more people over the edge with this huge expenditure. Put this question on the election ballot next year. Are you in favour of a pool and second ice surface, yes or no?

Poor communication from tech agent to customer To the editor: When I encountered problems with my new laptop (a mother’s day gift), I called Cogeco for technical support. The agent who took my call was polite and informed me that he could correct the problem by telephone. I

am not sufficiently knowledgeable about computers to follow his instructions and requested a house call. Apparently house calls are not considered necessary for the problem that I was experiencing and the agent very kindly supplied me with telephone

Ontario Hydro is ‘taking care of business everywhere, every day’ To the editor, Amidst the harshest winter period, an Ontario Hydro employee knocked on my door in Lower Ashdad and informed me that Hydro will install a new electrical pole on my prop-

erty. He asked my permission to conduct the work and soon enough a new, magnificent pole overlooked my residence. It holds numerous wiring and lots of mysterious items attached to it.

Blind people have a right to read To the editor: Everyone has the right to read. No matter where you call home, we all have the right to read and access information so that we can be truly included in our community, society and culture. The problem is, the right to read isn’t upheld universally. In 2017, community members with print disabilities like blindness still have very limited access to books. In honour of National AccessAbility Week (May 28 to June 3), I’m saying here and now that this needs to change. There are more than three million Canadians who can’t read traditional print because of a disability. These people rely on alternative formats like braille, audio and accessible e-text to be able to read books, newspapers and other published content. But only a small fraction of the books printed in Canada each year are made available in these accessible formats. And remarkably, CNIB (the Canadian National Institute for the Blind) has remained the largest producer of accessible books in Canada for nearly a century, despite being a charity. Imagine not being able to walk into a library or bookstore and pick up any book you want. Imagine being in high school or university and not being able to read the textbook you’re given. Imagine hearing your friends talking about the latest best seller and knowing you can’t read it. That’s not accessibility. That’s exclusion. What Canada needs is a long-term strategy to ensure equitable access to books for all citizens, regardless of disability. This National AccessAbility Week, I hope we can have this conversation together and ask our government to create a solution to ensure everyone’s right to read is upheld. Duane Morgan Executive Director CNIB Ontario – East Region

OPG IS CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON THE OTTAWA RIVER TO PROTECT ONTARIO’S BIODIVERSITY. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is conducting research in the vicinity of its hydroelectric generating stations on the Ottawa River. This research, which is being carried out by Kleinschmidt Associates and Bowfin Environmental Consulting, is in support of OPG’s ongoing American eel and lake sturgeon mitigation studies for these species at risk. Kleinschmidt and Bowfin boats may be in close proximity to the shoreline as they complete day- and nighttime fish abundance studies and shoreline inspections. This yearly research is being conducted under permits from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and in accordance with O. Reg. 242/08 (as amended by O. Reg. 176/13) under the Ontario Endangered Species Act. Work will continue until the end of September. Please visit opgbiodiversity.com to learn more about OPG’s biodiversity programs. At the Renfrew office are: from left, in back, Maggie Johnston, Sabrina Clemmer, Sandi Box, Jackie Armstrong, Renfrew Mayor Don Eady and in front Mary Fulton, Rachel Merrick and Brandi Fraser.

Summer Smiles Campaign helps children attend camp Many more children across Renfrew County will be attending summer camp this year, thanks to the Summer Smiles Campaign launched to benefit the Darlene Aikens Memorial Summer Camp Fund. Last year, the campaign sent 215 children to camp. With an average cost of $300 per camper, the fund needs close to $70,000 to reach this goal. “Camp is everything to me,“ declares one of the young campers who attended thanks to the campaign —and that camper got more than happy memories and new friends. Studies show an experience like summer camp helps a child in areas like health and well-being, self-esteem, and ultimately, making good decisions. Family and Children’s Services of Renfrew

County is reaching out to individuals, companies, businesses, churches and service clubs to help give Renfrew County children a summer camp experience. Why does Family and Children’s Services work so hard to send Renfrew County children to camp? “Everything makes me want to go back to camp,” declares another young camper. “I liked making friends the most.” You can help put a summer smile on the face of a Renfrew County child like this one with your support of the Summer Smiles Campaign. People or groups wanting to donate the Summer Smiles Campaign can go online to www. fcsrefrew.on.ca or call 613-735-6866, ext. 4041, to learn more.

GRAND ROUNDS Local bike chapter gives back to community Members of the Northern Old Bastards Section (NOBS) of the Old Bastards Vintage Motorcycle Club have two things in common—passion for bikes and pride in their tradition of giving back to others. Every year since 2010, local bike enthusiasts have used their common interest as a means to raise funds for local hospitals and foodbanks. Members pay a small annual membership fee to cover costs and funds are mostly raised through 50/50 draws at their monthly breakfast gatherings held in different locations around the region. Local member Albert Theriault presented a cheque to Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation Director of Development Hannah MacMillan

recently. To date, the club has donated over $3,000 to the Foundation, including this year’s contribution of $250. “It’s our way to give back to the community,” says Theriault, owner of Sandy’s Diner in Renfrew. The club has more than 100 members hailing from Renfrew, Pembroke, Arnprior, the Pontiac and Ottawa and funds are shared amongst organizations in those areas. “We truly appreciate longstanding supporters like NOBS for the difference they make. Their contributions enable the hospital to continually make improvements and upgrades and provide the best care possible,” said MacMillan.

Hannah MacMillan, RVHF Development Coordinator, receives a donation from Northern Old Bastards Section (NOBS) member Albert Theriault.

Petition seeks to improve services for brain injured SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

“Every signature counts in our Champlain LHIN area,” says the association. “If people want copies of the petition to help out, they can get it at the locations mentioned and mail them back to: The Ottawa Valley Brain Injury Association at 211 Bronson Ave., Ottawa, Ont. K1R 6H5. Telephone 613-233-8303 email contact@ biaov.org.” During Brain Injury Awareness Month, brain injury associations across the country are putting a face to this epidemic through posters, events, and social media, #IamTheFaceofBrainInjury and #BIAM17. Hailey Harms is one of those faces. When Hailey was 16 years old, her competitive skating career was cut short after she sustained numerous concussions. Doctors told her she would never be able to skate again. The risk of a more serious brain injury and severe consequences was just too great. Hailey’s hopes and dreams for a skating career were crushed. When asked what she would like the public to know about brain injury, Hailey, now 19, stated, “That it can happen to absolutely anybody, your neighbour, your mother, your daughter. All ages. Anyone.” Brain injury came close to Hailey again, when her high school friend, Evan, sustained a severe brain injury through a motor vehicle collision. When Hailey escorted Evan to his 2014 high school graduation, he was heading to university to study engineering. Three years have passed and he is working very hard to regain his ability to talk and walk. He dreams of returning to university and engineering, but his future is unclear. Two talented young people from the same community. Two brain injuries. Different causes. Different experiences. Different outcomes. “Brain injuries can range from mild to catastrophic, but all brain injuries can have lasting effects,” said Ruth Wilcock, executive director of OBIA. Lives are changed in an instant. Hopes and dreams are often put on the back burner as is the case with Hailey and Evan. Brain injury is 15 times more common than spinal cord injury, 30 times more common than breast cancer and 400 times more common than HIV-AIDS. Brain injury is also the No. 1 cause of death and disability worldwide among children, youth and those under age 44.

Whether it’s a stroke, brain tumour or concussion — it’s an issue that affects many Canadians. The Brain Injury Association of the Ottawa Valley (OBIA) is asking the public to sign a petition that will help improve services for those affected and their families. The petition, which will be presented to the legislature in the fall, says brain injuries occur as a result of a motor vehicle accidents, assaults, workplace accidents, concussions, falls and illnesses such as stroke and many of these individuals face significant challenges obtaining appropriate services and securing affordable housing. June is Brain Injury Awareness Month so it’s a fitting time to introduce the petition, say officials. “We the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows: 1. Provide suitable affordable housing in the Champlain LHIN; 2. Develop more residential options (group homes, supported housing, specialized long term care units, a behavioural residential centre) in the Champlain LHIN and 3. Provide additional specialized support services specific to the needs of persons with a brain injury offered by staff with acquired brain injury training in the Champlain LHIN,” reads the petition. There are a number of locations within the Champlain LHIN where the petition can be found: Douglas: Douglas Grocery Horton: Horton Township Office Renfrew: Renfrew Public Library, The Warehouse McNab: McNab Township Office Arnprior: Arnprior Library, Arnprior Town Hall, Karen’s Hair Salon, Imperial Professional Alteration and Blast From the Past Antique Store Almonte: Brenda’s New to You Store Pakenham: 5 Span Feed and Seed Eganville: Municipality office of Eganville, Eganville Country Store Pembroke: City of Pembroke office, Pembroke Library, Imperial Professional Alteration, Salvation Army Community Church

MIKE NAGRODSKI Renfrew Duplicate Bridge

Any thoughts of gardening were put aside, as 12 tables of bridge players turned out for May 31 contest at the Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club. Though many slams were attempted over the afternoon, not all were successful. However, some of the results were notable: on Board #13, slam contracts were made 6 times, but only Mona Brydges and Jeannie Yagminas managed a grand slam; well bid and played ladies! On Board #26, though all the North-South pairs scored 12 tricks, only Carol and David Sulpher were shrewd enough to bid the slam; nicely done folks! The Renfrew Bridge Club wants celebrate

Canada’s 150th, by getting 150 bridge players to play on June 28. There will be two sessions, morning and afternoon, with lunch included. There will separate sections for both contract and duplicate players and all skill levels are invited to come out for an enjoyable time. For additional information contact Ruth Grant at 432-8235 or at rjgrant@bell.net. Congratulations to the May 31 winners: North – South: 1: Arthur Ham - Phyllis Brennan 2: Carol Sulpher - David Sulpher 3: Mona Brydges - Jeannie Yagminas East – West: 1: Ted Ambridge - Mike Nagrodski 2: Kevin McSheffrey - Andy Sklepowicz 3: Eleanor Hotchkiss - Leo Coulas

Gone are the butcher birds of summer MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

I have been an avid birder since the age of five. As a child, among my favourite birding spots were the open fields east of Arnprior. To get there, I walked (with great trepidation) across the Canadian Pacific Railway trestle on the Madawaska River. I recall one late May outing around 50 years ago when on my walk through the fields (now submerged courtesy of the Arnprior Generating Station) I found no fewer than five Loggerhead Shrike nests, each containing nestlings. Including adults, I saw around 25 shrikes that day. Little did I know that half a century later such a feat would be impossible not only locally but anywhere in Ontario. There are two species of shrikes in Ontario. Northern Shrikes are just that, for they nest in the Hudson Bay Lowlands and only occur in our area from about Thanksgiving until early April. Loggerhead Shrikes were once

rather common summer residents in southern Ontario, appearing from late March and staying until they migrated south in August. Over the past three decades Loggerhead Shrikes have become increasingly rare, so rare that they now reside on the Endangered Species list. Shrikes are fascinating birds. They are grey and white, robin-sized birds with a black mask and wings, and sport the meathook bill of a hawk but the legs and feet of a songbird. They are predatory and have the unusual habit of impaling their prey on thorns or broken branches before eating them, a behaviour that gave rise to the name: “Butcher Bird.” Northern Shrikes are slightly larger than Loggerheads, and have a longer bill with a pale base and larger meathook tip. They also have barring on their breasts, a feature that only juvenile Loggerheads display. The only bird that either species of shrike even remotely resembles is the Northern Mockingbird. That species is also

grey, black, and white, but lacks a meathook bill. While Northern Shrikes still regularly occur in winter, Loggerhead Shrikes have vanished from our area. A number of factors including habitat loss and increased vehicle use of country roads have contributed to their demise. Loggerheads eat grasshoppers and other insects, and often fly low over roads. Because of constant “improvement” of country roads as farmland becomes converted to residential land, there are many more cars travelling at high speeds on those roads than there were fifty years ago, and shrikes are likely among the casualties of that change. When found in our area, Loggerhead Shrikes preferentially nested in Hawthorns. Not only did the thorns of these shrubs provide sites for impaling prey, they also rendered the shrike nests safe from virtually all predators. In other regions of Ontario where Loggerhead Shrikes nested, in

Michael Runtz

Loggerhead Shrikes, which are now an endangered species, were once relatively common in the Ottawa Valley area. particular the alvars (limestone flats adorned with thin soil) near Kemptville, Napanee, and Carden, Loggerheads placed their nests in Eastern Red Cedars. Loggerhead Shrikes still nest on those alvars but today only around 20 pairs in total are known to be present. Efforts including captive breeding

programmes and the protection of nest sites are being made to stop Loggerhead Shrikes from slipping into extinction. It would be indeed wonderful if some day once again in our area Butcher Birds decorated thorns with their victims. The Nature email is mruntz@start. ca

Edwards) together raised $236 for the Renfrew and District Food Bank. “That’s amazing,” said Morton. She called the exercise a hands-on, eyeopening experience for the kids. “It really showed them how much they have to be grateful for, we wanted them to see just how much they had” said Morton. “We told them some families can’t afford what we have or food from the grocery store.” She says about 18 kids really took it to heart and insisted they fill the food bank shelves. One student, Sophie Donkers, even

took money out of her piggy bank to support the food bank. “It means she was not able to buy something and overall it showed them to be grateful for what you have,” said Morton. Valery Stewart, a volunteer with the food bank, thought the students’ campaign was great. “When I was contacted I thought what the kids were doing was very heartwarming,” said Stewart. “It’s another example of the close connection of the community and the food bank.”

Reunions win Renfrew Ladies Basketball championship ROB WARREN

The Renfrew Optometrists were uncharacteristically off the mark as they rushed their shots against the Reunions in the championship basketball game of the Renfrew Ladies Recreational Basketball League. They were outshot and outrebounded as the Reunions doubled them 22-11 in the first half. It looked as though we were in for a ho-hum

finish with the Optometrists forced to play aggressively, steal or foul, as the Reunions still held a 32-22 lead late in the game. As only the Optometrists can, they got hot from long range, sinking four treys in the last two minutes. They pulled to within 35-34 before Hillary McMillan secured the 37-34 win for the Reunions, sinking her last two of six consecutive free throws. Mae Donohue was the game high scorer with 13 points. Katie Dolan countered with 11 for the Optometrists.

Carter Jarrett finishes Dragonfly Fun Day at a round of 77 BILL RAINBOTH Dragonfly Golf Links

Last week, Dragonfly kicked off with a Member Fun Day event Sunday, May 28. This event was a chance for members to test their golfing skills in a “somewhat competitive” environment, and at the same time qualify for our various Dragonfly Teams. Highlights included a sizFILE zling round of 69 from JusCarter Jarrett, Paul LaFrance, Joe Proulx and Danny Visneskie. Carter, tin Riopelle, and the low net winner for the day was Ed just 12 years old had a great round of 77.

Lepack. Justin also was closest to the pin on #7 and Michel Levesque was closest on #13. A big shout-out to 12-year-old Carter Jarrett who finished with a score of 77 — good for 2nd low gross on the day. Joanne Dumouchel was low gross winner and Pam McFarlane was low net. Closest to the pin was Linda Kidd on both the 7th and the 18th holes. Thank you to all who participated.

Monday and Tuesday this past week were wet and cold. Thankfully the sun came out in time for Monday evening, but the Tuesday Men’s League was rained out except for the brave team (?) of Valley Automation and Controls. Closest to the Pin winners on Monday were Jason English on #5 and Tyson Utronki on #7. Low round for the night was Renfrew Pizzeria with a score of 68. The Wednesday Men’s Leaguers had the best weather of the week. Low score in A flight came from The Abandoned Cubs with a gross score of 70. Low net winners in B flight were Valley Ventilation with a score

of 71. Closest to the Pin winners were Rheal Gilbert on #5, and Tom Hyland on #7. Ladies night was well attended despite cool temperatures and frequent passing rain clouds. A flight winners for the night were We be Clubbin. B flight was won by Seriously?, and the low round of the night was posted by Underskilled & Over Par with a score of 12 under par! Next week we may need to change their name to “Overskilled & Under Par”. Closest to the pin winners were Kim Cluett on #5 and Bri Bingham on #18. Congrats to all our golfers — now bring on summer …. Please!

SHALLA, Parnell In loving memory of a dear husband, father and grandpa who passed away June 10, 2015. Silent Tears The quiet darkness of the night, Brings out my greatest fears… Did you know how much you meant to me; Then I cry my silent tears, As I watched you in that little room, And I looked into your face, I saw that one I knew before, In another time and place, What I wouldn’t give to go back in time, For just a little while, So I could hear you laugh again. So I could see you smile, Now the memories are all that’s left, Such a permanent goodbye, And it seems as though they’ll never stop These silent tears I cry.

Forever remembered and forever loved, Mike and Betty

Musings from the Mill Museum: Terry Currie is guest speaker Are you a collector? Do you love antiques? Are you interested in the history of the community? If the answer is yes, then the Mill Museum should be high on your list of places to visit this summer. It’s

where you can enjoy the hundreds of antiques, the many collections, and fascinating stories of the people who have lived in the Renfrew area throughout its history. The building is owned and main-

tained by the town, and is managed by a board of volunteer directors who hire a site manager and students to run the museum in the summer. Everyone associated with the museum enjoys being involved in managing

and organizing the collection, sorting through the donations from the community, and planning for the future of the museum. If you have an interest in becoming involved in this unique treasure of Renfrew, and helping to decide how best to procure, preserve, present and promote this heritage, why not buy a membership in the society? At $20 a year it’s a bargain to help preserve our heritage. A board of directors is elected from the members at the annual general meeting. Being a member can take as much or as little involvement as you wish to offer. Often, simply having fresh or different ideas makes for a valuable contribution. Or if you love to sew, tinker, fix, fiddle, or construct, there are lots of items that need attention. If you have some computer expertise, the museum collection needs continual updating of data, including digitizing our database and photographing the collection, one artifact at a time. Perhaps you might enjoy sorting through and cataloguing the several donations of items received each year. Last year the museum was given the extensive Handford collection of photographic apparatus. In addition, some 50 boxes of other items were donated, all requiring sorting and organizing. Incidentally, if you or your family have items that you wish to donate to the museum for posterity, these are the types of items the museum looks for: items that have been made in, or reflect the history of Renfrew, items that are unique and worth preserving, items or memorabilia from notable Renfrew citizens or long-standing families in the community. Drop by the museum for more information or call 613 432 2129 and we will get back to you. Our annual general meeting is

Monthly Column by MPP John Yakabuski

June 2017 By now I am sure you have all either heard an advertisement or received some kind of communication (paid by you, the taxpayers of Ontario) telling you about the Liberal’s so-called Fair Hydro Plan. The Liberals have spent millions of dollars telling you about a plan that they say will save you an additional 17 percent on your hydro bill. It should be pointed out that under the plan you need not do anything; the reduction will come to you without any need for you to apply. Given that is the case, there should be no need for the Liberals to spend millions of dollars telling you so. The ads are being disseminated across the province not to inform you, but to somehow convince you that the Liberal government is your friend and reducing your electricity costs. This so-called Fair Hydro Plan is actually doing nothing to reduce electricity costs. What it is doing is refinancing the entire mess so that your monthly payments are reduced, but ensuring that in the long run you—and your children—will pay much more. It is akin to taking out a mortgage and then doubling the amortization period: looks good in the front end but in the long run you are paying a lot more. Recently the Financial Accountability Office released their assessment of the Liberal’s Fair Hydro Plan. This is not me speaking now, it is Stephen LeClair, the Financial Accountability Officer. Under the so-called Fair Hydro Plan your bills will go down by a further 17 percent this year and will increase at the rate of inflation over the next four years. However, starting in 2021 your bills will increase by an average of 6.8 percent annually until 2027. Furthermore, after 2027 it is projected that they will rise four percent more per year than if the government had done nothing. What this amounts to is that—even if the government had a balanced budget for each of the next 29 years this plan would still cost a net $21 billion more. This number is arrived at by taking the $45 billion cost to taxpayers minus the overall savings to electricity ratepayers of $21 billion. The Financial Accountability Officer further estimates that if the budget is not balanced for each of the next 29 years, the cost could increase to as high as $93 billion. I know these big numbers can make one’s eyes gloss over, but it does need to be pointed out that this Liberal government is prepared to saddle you—and future generations—with an additional debt of up to $93 billion on the hope that it will buy them past the next provincial election. It just goes to show that when it comes to your money, there is no limit to Liberal misuse. The water continues to recede and I know that everyone affected is looking forward to getting their lives back to normal, yet much work remains to be done. One thing is for certain, the flood of 2017 is an event that will not soon be forgotten. It has been more than a little rainy over the past several weeks. Let’s hope the weather becomes more seasonal soon. 36 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 8, 2017

New Burnstown business embraces drone technology TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Jim Hutchison’s new business Hoverwolf Aerial Photography is soaring, literally. The photographer, with 25 years of professional experience, is now looking at things from a different perspective, that of a drone. He flies a DJI Phantom 3, always by Transport Canada’s rule book, to capture a unique view of residential/farm land, family gatherings, roof inspections and other outdoor attractions people may want to get a birds eye view of. “It’s a fun and very unique way to capture something with the drone,” said Hutchison. He absolutely loves flying but was unable to get his pilots licence due to health reasons and says flying his drone is so exciting. And it’s a very dramatic way of showing off the property.” It’s also a neat way to capture a special occasion. “How cool to do a fly over at a family gathering and get everyone to wave,” said Hutchison. He is a registered drone pilot with Transport Canada and works to ensure he complies with the new regulations. “I’m flying by the rules for commercial flyers,” said Hutchison. “I always do a pre-flight check because safety is the key, that is the bottom line.” He offers both edited video and printed photos of the drone footage. There was always something to be done in the fields for Father In my mind’s eye I could see Father in the far-off fields earlier in the spring, plowing the fields that lay beyond the Bonnechere River over the West Hill. He walked behind the plow, stooped over as if he were carrying a heavy load. He used the furrow first plowed, as a guideline, never once looking back to make sure he was moving in a straight line. I would, if I wasn’t at school, go over to where he was working, sit on the log fence, and watch him. He would nod in my direction, but there was no time for idle chatter, and I would stay there for the longest time, often wondering how he could stand the constant back and forth of walking the fields that made up our farm on that side of the river. And even though much time had passed since those fields had been plowed, there was still the land on what he called the north side of the railroad tracks to tend to. Often the first-plowed fields would be sprouted by the time Father had finished plowing and planting the other fields of grain. And now he was sitting on the rim

of the big water tank in the barn yard. The bottoms of his bib-overalls were caked with mud from the fields he had been working in, and I saw that even his leather laces in his work boots were hidden by the dirt. I knew he would be stripping in the wood shed before coming into the house for his supper. He sat with the plow-point between his knees, anchored tightly so it couldn’t move. And I wondered how he could endure the pain of its weight on his legs, as he held it firmly so that he could work on it. And I knew why he was sitting on the rim of the water trough that was there to quench the thirst of the livestock in the hot summer weather. He had in his hand the whetstone and he was trying to sharpen the plow point

to make the job yet to be done easier. I saw that the very point of the plow point had worn away, leaving that part jagged, but there was enough left to finish the job if he could once again create a sharp edge. And that was what he was trying to do on that hot summer day. You just didn’t buy a new plow-point because a bit of it had worn off! I once asked Father how something so hard could wear down to that point, and he said it was because the land, even though his ancestors had done their best to remove them, still had buried stones in the ground. The constant contact with the stones was what had worn the plow-point down. Father, with his hands bare, scraped the stone over and over the edge of the plow-point, stopping only long enough to dip the whetstone into the trough of water, trying to create a new sharp edge. I went to the pump close by and brought him a cup of cold water. He took the cup with his weather-beaten hand and swallowed it down without stopping. He handed the cup back to me, only nodding his thanks. Again, I

knew there was no time for idle chatter. The north fields beckoned him, and the plow point had to be ready. As I so often did, I watched Father at work that day. I moved to the twig chair that sat on the back stoop so that I could see him, hoping he didn’t know that I was there. If he did, there was no acknowledgement. And again, in my mind’s eye, I could see him walking mile after mile behind the plow pulled by our horse, and I wondered at how he could stand the monotony of it all. The steady

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
