is named in honour of FCM past president, Ann MacLean, who led FCM´s campaign to increase the number of women in municipal politics across Canada. Green is the fifth woman in Canada ever to win the award.

It was a night to celebrate the best of the community. The Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual community awards celebration on Thursday, June 2 at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre in front of a large crowd. Kent Tubman, chamber president, called it a night of celebration and magic. “Tonight, we celebrate the magic that happens in our great community every day of the year,” said Tubman. “We are blessed to live in such a vibrant community where volunteering is a way of life and treating your customer right is just how we do it.” Tubman said they received many nominations for the 11 awards handed out. “That tells me that we are a grateful bunch, looking for ways to acknowledge the good deeds of others.” Among the major award winners are Lee Sharpe, who was named Citizen of the Year and Melcher Heating and Cooling, honoured for lifetime business achievement.

Green wins prestigious Ann McLean award Sherry Haaima

Audrey Green is a trailblazer. The retired Renfrew municipal politician vividly remembers what she was told when she became the one and only female on Renfrew County Council in 1974.

“I was told I could go home and get my cheque every month because the men certainly knew what they were doing,” she recalls. Fast forward more than 30 years and Green has been recognized with one of the highest honours available for municipal politicians - the Federation of Canadian Mu-

nicipalities’ (FCM) Ann MacLean Award for Outstanding Service by a Woman in Municipal Politics. The award recognizes retired female municipal politicians who have shown exemplary service to their community and constituents and to mentoring women who want to run for elected office. It

Town will honour Green June 14 Continued from front

“It may be the most prestigious award ever won by anyone in Renfrew County. It’s a big deal,” said Renfrew Mayor Don Eady, who was among those who travelled to the conference in Winnipeg, Man., for the presentation, which took place on Sunday, June 5 during the FCM annual conference. “Renfrew has to be proud of her. She was always trying to be helpful,” said Eady. “She asked tough questions, got answers and made informed decisions.” Green was very well-received at the conference, he added. “She made a truly outstanding speech. She basically had people in tears at times and laughing at times,” said Eady. “At the end of that she got an amazing applause and a standing ovation.” Green served as a councillor in Renfrew from 1972-74, as reeve from 1974-1978, mayor from 19781991 and was again reeve from 1997-2014. As mayor, she fought for the purchase of the land that would become Ma-Te-Way Park and led an initiative to have a new town hall built. She’s chaired and been a member of every committee and was instrumental in launching affordable and subsidized day care in Renfrew. She served on the Police Services Board during the transition from a town force to the Ontario Provincial Police and was involved in the creation of Renfrew’s first official plan and comprehensive zoning bylaw. Like many career women, all the while she juggled the duties required of a wife and mother of four children. She says there were definitely nights when she tucked her children in for the night and had to jet off to a meeting or event. “But things just kind of fell into place,” she said. How did she respond to the sexism she encountered in those early days? “To be honest I don’t think I gave it much thought,” she said. “I knew that the people had spoken and given me a job and I was dead set and determined to do the best I could.” Women today face the same challenges, said Green. She encourages anyone, particularly females, considering a career in politics to give it a go. “You have to realize it’s an uphill battle. If you’re young and married and have children the day after you’re elected, you still have to look after that,” she said. She believes women have an “inner power” that allows them to jug-

And while the award recognizes those who have mentored other women, Green said she was always willing to help everyone. “I just automatically took people - men as well as women – under my wing in order to make the system work better. I knew what I had gone through and I wanted to help make it easier,” she said. What did she love so much about politics? “I got up every morning and it was a challenge,” said Green. “You never knew what to expect. You could have 40 people screaming at you or three people shaking your hand.” She’s had no shortage of personal challenges. Her husband John died in 1989 and two of her chil-

dren have passed away. Through it all, she’s remained dedicated to her community. She’s currently first vice president of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Auxiliary, secretary for Heritage Renfrew, a member of the provincial Conservative riding association executive and a member of the RCAF Wing executive. She loves cats, is an avid reader, enjoys fishing, swimming and oil painting. And her deep love of Renfrew and area has lasted through the years. “When I drive over the hill on Bruce Street and see all the lights of Renfrew, I look at it so proud and say ‘God, that’s my town.’” To honour Green, a special meeting of Renfrew council will be held June 14 following the regular meeting at 6 p.m. The event takes place at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre.

Sharpe first moved to Renfrew in 1979 and quickly felt like she had grown up here, according to her daughter Joanne McVeigh who accepted the award on behalf of her mother who was in Vancouver. Sharpe has been heavily involved with the Sunshine Coach over the years and in 2015 the building was dedicated the ‘Lee Sharpe Sunshine Centre.’ She also was on the board at the Renfrew Golf Club for 14 years, fundraised for the Bonnechere Manor and helped at the Renfrew Curling Club. McVeigh passionately spoke of what she called a great honour for her mom. “She will be extremely pleased with the news that she has won this great honour,” said McVeigh. “I know you are thanking her for the things she has done in Renfrew but she wanted me to thank you Renfrew for what you have done for her.” In Sharpe’s prepared speech she said it was easy to get involved and to give back. “I thank you for this honour, but truly Renfrew, thank you for giving so much to myself, Larry and our family. Being part of this town has truly been a gift.” McVeigh also congratulated the other nominees for Citizen of the Year Annette Miller and Ella Box.

Chamber awards honour local businesses, volunteers From page 3

The Shoe Lounge took home the award for the Best New Small Business of the Year, which is for a business with five employees or fewer that has demonstrated sound business practices, exceptional customer service and leadership. “I am so humbled by this, you can’t imagine,” said Jill Soucie, Shoe Lounge owner. “The dedication of this community inspires me. It makes me want to do better. The Shoe Lounge wouldn’t be here without the support of the community.” Also nominated for the award were Kelly Cobus Photography and The Valley Food and Drink Co. SKILLED TRADE EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR

The three businesses nominated for Skilled Trade Employer of the Year were: Bonnechere Excavating Inc., Doug’s Automotive Solutions and Yemen Electric. The award is presented to an employer that has an exceptional history of training apprentices in one or more skilled trades and participates in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program. The award went to Doug’s Automotive and Doug Pougnet accepted the award. “We have been in the area for 10 years now and in business for three years. The welcome has been unbelievable,” said Pougnet. “The business has grown and grown and I can’t say enough about Renfrew.”

CHAMBER MEMBER OF THE YEAR

Tubman acknowledged two businesses that make a difference in the downtown core: Renfrew Printing celebrating 45 years of business success and the Bonnechere Bakery for making Renfrew their business home and investing with their recent expansion. The award went to J.S. Wilson Financial Management. “This business is an example for all of us. They contribute their time, money and energy to help local causes…Collectively, they sit on many boards and committees making a real difference in our local and international community,” said Tubman. The BIA Member of the year award is selected from nominations made by members of the Renfrew Business Improvement Area and it is peer-nominated and peer-selected. “I like to thank the BIA for this award,” said John Wilson. “This is not an individual award but a team award.”

The recipient of the Chamber Member of the Year is chosen for their dedication and commitment to the chamber. CogecoTV is this year’s winner. Tubman made the presentation and said there are many people and member businesses that help the chamber thrive. He said it was a hard decision because they have a pretty active chamber. “As we focused on the criteria ‘continued dedication, commitment and service to the chamber’ a clear choice emerged,” said Tubman. “The business I speak of focuses on what’s happening locally in our community and always includes the chamber in their plans. Some businesses contribute to our community by providing much needed jobs, thank you. This business does that and more. They leverage what they are good at to be successful in a way that showcases our community, it’s win-win.” PRESIDENT’S AWARD Richard Leavoy, producer at CogecoTV, accepted the award. “Thank you to the The President’s Award is chosen by the chamber for considering us,” said Leavoy. “It chamber president to recognize an individual is an honour for us and without our volun- or group that has had a positive influence on teers we couldn’t do half of what we do.” our community through a personal and/or business contribution. current. “This organization began from an idea to help others 10 years ago and has blossomed into a community building entity that is unique in our area, our province and our country,” said Tubman. “By pulling together the ideas and energies of students, teachers, parents, businesses and volunteers they have set the bar for what is possible by simply walking around in a circle.” In 10 years they have raised more than $860,000 for cancer research and are a lead donor in the ‘I Choose RVH’ building development campaign. HONORARY AWARD

The Honorary Award is given to an individual or group considered to be especially admirable or worthy of the distinction. This year the award went to Bell Lumber. Allan Bell accepted the award on behalf of his family. “This is an honour to receive this award. We are in our 34th year and third generation family working here,” said Bell. “We have done business with hundreds of companies and Bell Lumber is in every province and a number of states. One of those companies even ships to Germany.” One of the main reasons for their success, said to Allan, was their father Raymond Bell. “At 82-and-a-half he still comes into work everyday,” said Allan. The two youngsters up for the Youth of the Year were Arleigh Prince and Charlie Leclaire. At seven-years-old, Leclaire helped make blessing bags for the Shepherds of Good Hope and raised money for charity with a lemonade stand. Prince, who was also nominated

Bill McAdam said it was good to be recognized after so many years in business. “I would think people would ask me the secret to my success but they ask me how old I am,” said McAdam. “They also ask me when I am going to retire and I say not

for many years.” He also thanked his great staff including his wife Deija and daughter Colleen. “My newest employee has been with me for 25 years,” said McAdam. “Thank you to the chamber, it is very appreciated.” Magic by Steven Anthony and delicious food courtesy of Rocky Mountain House were part of the fun.

million and the cost of the actual building is $3.7 million. Other costs included the land and other planning fees. The new building sits on 20 acres and this project will take up three acres. The building itself is 16,000 square feet which is similar to the OPP building in Pembroke. The new OPP base will serve a number of areas, including Arnprior, Renfrew, Admaston-Bromley, Horton, Greater Madawaska, McNab-Braeside and part of Whitewater Region.

New OPP building on schedule Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

The new Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment, owned by the County of Renfrew, is on schedule and looks to be within budget. The 16,000 square foot building located at 450 O’Brien Rd. in Renfrew is a $5.3 million project that was approved by the county in August of 2014. “It was tendered at the right time, it came at the right time (November 2015 to Guy Saumure and Sons Construction Ltd.). This kind of work helps keep them going until the summer. Most of the construction was done in the off-season,” said Renfrew County director of development and property Paul Moreau. “The project is on schedule for a November move in date and they will take over the lease in August and move in November.” Moreau thinks the build is going well so far and hopes it might save the county in the long run. “We are really hoping to be under budget,” said Moreau. “We are more than halfway and we haven’t had a lot of change orders.” “Every project has some small changes,” explained Chris Haines, project manager at Guy Saumure and Sons Construction Ltd. “We’ve worked with them and stayed within budget.” Currently they are digging the trenches under the building to install the sewer and electrical work. “We want to get this right before we pour the concrete,” said Moreau. “We are making sure everything is exactly where it’s supposed to be.” It’s the first time the County of Renfrew has entered into what Warden Peter Emon calls is a unique partnership. “The county is acting as an agent to ensure the police have a good facility,” said Emon. The warden is anxious for the project to be completed. “I think it’s going to be a really great day

on opening day for people to tour it and see how modern it is,” said Emon. Emon calls it an asset for the county to have, as they will own the building once it is completed. “It’s a pretty good investment for the county that will continue to demonstrate its value for a long time,” said Emon. Emon is very enthusiastic about the progress especially given the winter; he says they could have been behind. “The contractor has done a great job at meeting timelines and has exceeded some,” said Emon. “The quality of construction is very good and the building will look great. They know how to build and do it well.” Saumure and Sons has built a number of OPP stations throughout Eastern Ontario. “When you hire people with previous knowledge it is a real benefit,” said Emon. There are two contracts with the project. The first is for the building, the ‘shell’ and the landscaping outside. This portion of the project is on schedule to be finished in August. Contract two deals with the building’s interior . It starts once everything with the outside of the building is complete. This includes the offices, interior, floor and items very specific to the OPP such as gun lockers, finger print area and the cell area. The Province of Ontario awarded the second contract to Guy Saumure and Sons Construction at the end of May. The building will complement Renfrew County Place (across the street) as the county tries to establish a ‘family’ of buildings. “It’s important for the County of Renfrew to stake out its identity in each community,” said Emon. “Most buildings will look similar with the glass, stone and wood.” The new building has a local connection as the rock on the outside is from Forgie’s Concrete in Renfrew. As Renfrew OPP detachment commander Insp. Colin Slight toured the inside of the building, with construction being done all around him, he smiled at what will soon be

OPINION

Connected to your community

Blazing trails It’s been a good week for women in Renfrew County. After 35 years of dedicated service, retired Renfrew municipal politician Audrey Green was awarded the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Ann McLean Award. The award recognizes retired female municipal politicians who have shown exemplary service to their community and constituents and to mentoring women who want to run for elected office. It is a fitting tribute for a woman who has long been a champion of Renfrew and area, one who has helped shape and develop the town into what it is today. And at the Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce awards, Lee Sharpe was recognized as the 2015 Citizen of the Year. Sharpe has worked tirelessly for many years, helping form Sunshine Coach, a vital transportation link for some of our most vulnerable citizens. She’s also been active with a number of other organizations. Both women are shining examples of community boosters and builders. They’ve each faced challenges and troubles over the years but remain positive and dedicated to the community. Thank you to Audrey, Lee and all those who give of themselves for the betterment of our community and the citizens within it. It’s reassuring and inspiring to see dedication and commitment that has spanned the years. As American cultural anthropologist, author and speaker Margaret Mead once said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Horton resident frustrated with ‘outrageous’ increases To the editor:

Earlier this year, I calculated the amount of our property taxes for 2016. I was shocked to learn that we would have an increase of 18.5 per cent in our taxes from last year. I wrote a letter to Horton councillors; this letter was part of the May 3 council meeting. In this letter, I explained that our six-year tax increase was 45.74 per cent. Outrageous! I informed Horton council that the Horton taxes in 2010 was 53.53 per cent of my CPP income and in 2016, the Horton taxes would be 70.52 per cent of my CPP income. Based on this trend, in a few years, the Horton taxes would be greater than my CPP income. I asked council how retirees would be able to reside in Horton Township in the future. Not one councillor responded...nothing! I also compared our Horton taxes with Coun. Jamey Larone’s taxes with the result being that we are charged double his taxes. Coun. Larone lives directly across the road

from our property; we both receive the same services from Horton Township. My questions to Horton council were these: • why does it cost double to service our property ? • what do we receive from Horton Township that Coun. Larone does not? • how do you justify charging us double the amount that Coun. Larone pays? Not one councillor responded. I had requested a written reply from Horton councillors. The following is what is in the minutes for the May 3 council meeting: “Councillor Larone expressed that this was interesting and understands the frustration but this is purely an assessment issue with MPAC (Municipal Property Assessment Corporation) not a township issue. Mayor Robert Kingsbury noted that Mr. Puhalski is not paying any more money for the municipal services than anyone else. This issue seems to be a misappropriate valuation of the property and needs to be addressed to MPAC. Con-

sensus was not to reply to this letter.” Note that Mayor Kingsbury made a ridiculous statement when he said that we are not paying any more money for the municipal services than anyone else. If Mayor Kingsbury would have had the presence of mind to check the township records, he would have found out that we do, in fact, pay double what Coun. Larone pays for exactly the same services. Perhaps Mayor Kingsbury should have put his brain in gear before he put his mouth in motion. In the future, he may choose his words more carefully. Coun. Larone and Mayor Kingsbury spoke of this being an MPAC problem...it has been addressed with MPAC to no avail. In my letter, I said “does a resident of Horton Township have to neglect their property and allow the buildings to deteriorate to become a disgrace to the township just so that one can get a low assessment in order to afford one’s taxes? Is this what the Horton councillors would really like to see happen?”

Not one councillor responded. As council decided not to reply to my letter, could it be because they are not capable of putting words together to form a sentence, then string those sentences together to form a paragraph, then arrange the paragraphs to form a letter? Would this have been too difficult for them? Are they not paid to respond to the concerns of fellow residents? In a few years there will be another election and all five councillors must be kicked to the curb. We need to elect people who will be responsive to the concerns of residents of Horton Township. Please remember this when you vote. You may wish to follow this topic as the councillors’ names and faces will probably be blasting across the worldwide social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Horton Township will probably receive more worldwide exposure than ever before.

Fun at Camp Lau-Ren.

Are natureoriented camps still relevant? Bruce Patterson

There are a plethora of different kinds of summer camps to be found in Ottawa and in the Valley. There are sports camps, computer camps, science camps, hockey camps, aqua fun, leadership camps and more. Are traditional summer camps located in nature still relevant? Richard Louv wrote an article called ‘Natural Gifts Of Camp’ and he believes that families still value natureoriented camps. He points out that one reason kids don’t go outside is parental fear, which is likely a reason that parents will value summer camps more now and in the future. Summer camps can offer parents the reassurance that their children will be safe as they receive the gifts of nature. Camps such as Camp Lau-Ren are certified by the United Church of Canada and the Ontario Camps Association. Children are plugged into some kind of electronic medium five-anda-half hours per day at home, more time than they spend doing anything else besides sleeping. Studies show that at camp, the nature experiences significantly reduce children’s stress. Nature oriented camps also help care for the health of the earth. Many studies show that nature play in childhood is the chief determining factor in the environmental consciousness of adults. It’s clear that Louv makes the point that nature-oriented camps benefit children and the Earth in general. Parents value traditional summer camps as well. Families can learn more about nature-oriented camps such as Camp Lau-Ren at an open house. Lau-Ren’s open house is on Saturday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come for a tour, crafts, see a camper’s cabin, climb the rock and stay for a free barbecue, campfire, s’mores and more. You can find info at www.camplau-ren.com. The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 9, 2016 9

EOWC hosts successful meeting with federal MPs Renfrew County

Earlier this week, members of the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (EOWC) welcomed their federal representatives from across the region to a breakfast meeting on Parliament Hill to discuss priorities and partnership opportunities that would directly benefit rural Eastern Ontario. Warden Peter Emon, chair of the EOWC, and MP Mike Bossio, chair of the National Rural Caucus, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of their respective groups. Both spoke at length about the importance of a regional approach and the need for increased collaboration and partnership between the federal government and rural municipalities. “Municipalities are your best partner and the EOWC has a proven track record of providing accurate research to upper levels of government and completing projects on time and on budget, such as the Eastern Ontario Regional Network,” Emon told his federal counterparts. “With its history of success, Eastern Ontario can be the model that the rest of Canada benefits from.”

The regional priorities discussed Monday morning include stable infrastructure funding for roads and bridges – rural Eastern Ontario’s public transit network – through continued support for the federal gas tax contributions; economic development resources to support both small businesses and large industries in rural sectors, with funding from the Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODF) being distributed through an existing network of fifteen Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) across the region; economic growth through improved digital infrastructure, by closing the cellular network coverage gaps that exist in many small and rural communities; and support for a strong regional transportation network that focuses on export and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by focusing on the ports at Picton, Prescott and Cornwall. “The federal government demonstrated a willingness to continue working together with rural municipalities to improve their infrastructure and grow their economy, and this week’s meeting was further proof of the mutual collaboration between both sectors,” said Emon. Going beyond to recognize a lifetime of love Bill and Peggy Campbell have done everything together for more than seven decades, so its no wonder they were right next to each other as patients for their 70th wedding anniversary. Plans to celebrate the milestone event with family were delayed until they were well enough to return home, but the actual anniversary day did not go by without a celebration on the continuing care floor at RVH. “We didn’t think anything was going to happen—our neighbours had planned to come by and bring a small cake for us,” recalls Peggy. RVH staff on the third floor planned a little party for the special couple. To the

Campbell’s surprise, even their daughter Judith made the trip from Toronto to Renfrew to see her parents on their anniversary. “It was all so unexpected,” she adds. “It was wonderful!” The neighbours did come by with their cake, she smiles, “and Randy Penney brought us a big cake and flowers.” “If people have to be in the hospital, and you have been married for 70 years, RVH is the place to be. They really treat you royally,” she says. This gesture is something both Peggy and Bill know they would not have experienced if they weren’t at RVH. The two have also been able to share a room, keeping Peggy

OPP weekly news The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 230 calls for service during the previous week. DOMESTIC DISPUTES

Officers investigated six domestic disputes during the past week. No criminal offences occurred. IMPAIRED DRIVERS

On Friday, June 3 officers received information that a male driving a green pickup truck had struck a red van on Raglan Street North Renfrew and was possibly impaired. Officers attended the collision scene where the male driver was assessed by paramedics and transported to hospital. The green Ford pickup truck sustained severe damage to the front after being driven into the parked van. At the hospital the male failed an alcohol-screening test. Further breath tests were performed and as a result an 81-year-old male from Renfrew was charged with driving over 80mgs. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on July 6. Const. Kevin Rebertz led the investigation.

On May 29, at approximately 3:26 p.m. Renfrew OPP officers were dispatched to a traffic complaint heading west-bound on Highway 17 towards Arnprior. Several calls were received about a possible impaired driver. When officers arrived at Highway 17 and McCallum Drive in McNabBraeside the suspect vehicle was stopped, along with several witnesses. The female driver of the vehicle was arrested for impaired driving. Following further breath tests at the detachment a 51-yearold female of Ottawa was charged with impaired driving and driving over 80mgs. She was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on June 15. Const. Carlvin Burgins investigated. BREAK AND ENTER

On Saturday June 4 at 1 p.m. OPP officers were notified that a break and enter had taken place sometime overnight at the Boathouse Restaurant located at Calabogie Peaks and Resort. The front door had been forced open. Nothing appeared to have been taken. Const. Patrick O’Connor is investigating.

Fly-in breakfast June 12 at the Bruce McPhail Memorial airport sherry.haaima@metroland.com

What do you get when you mix planes, great food and some down-home music? The Champlain Flying Club annual Fly-In/Drive-In/Walk-In Breakfast of course. The breakfast is set for Sunday, June 12 at the Bruce McPhail Memorial airport and it promises to be a fun event for young and old alike. “It’s a hearty breakfast of eggs, home fries, ham, sausage and baked beans. And people just love to sit under the pine trees and listen to a bit of music,” said volun-

teer Dennis Yakaback, who’s been serving up the eggs at the annual event for the past 34 years. “If the weather’s good we can have as many as 75 airplanes visit. If it’s a nice morning we get lots of fly-ins.” It’s a popular event for families, he added. “We sometimes will serve up to 600 people. It’s a great time families. Kids love

the airplanes,” said Yakaback. The rain-or-shine event has been running for more than 40 years. The Champlain Flying Club is a local group made up of flying enthusiasts who enjoy home-built and traditional aircraft. A number of interesting home-built aircraft will be on display June 12, said Yakaback.

Breakfast runs from 7-11 a.m. Cost for breakfast is $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. The Bruce McPhail Memorial airport is located at the north end of Jeffrey Lake just off Highway 17 south of Logo Land. Music in Centennial Park opens June 17 As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, our thoughts turn to summer activities such as lively music in Eganville’s Centennial Park. The two hour shows will be performed live, every Wednesday and Friday evening starting at 7 p.m. Now into its fifth summer, organizers have added a lot of new talent to the lineup, as well as many performers from past years. All performances will be held at the bandshell in the park with the exception of July 1 when the show will be at Rotary Park behind the arena, and July 29, when there will be a special show in the arena. Both changes are part of the program to accommodate the village’s 125th birthday celebrations. In case of rain, the shows will be performed in the Eganville Legion. Although the admission is free, a freewill offering is collected. The money collected goes directly back into the park. “So the stage is set, the schedule is full, dust off those lawn chairs, and we hope you can join us for opening night, Friday, June 17, with Karl and Linda, plus Dave Souliere,” says a press release promoting the event. The full schedule will be at the park for opening night.

Farmers’ Market relocating on June 11

The Renfrew Farmers’ Market is relocating to Haramis Park (Park and Ride) at the corner of O’Brien and Mask Road as of June 11. This change will be for the rest of the season due to the construction in front of the fairgrounds. Come and see what the market has to offer from 8 a.m. to noon. There are new vendors this year, look for the signs.

Individuals and families without a family physician are finding it very confusing when it comes to the process to follow to obtain a family physician. Here are some points to help guide you: 1) If your family physician has given notice of his or her intent to close their practice you may de roster and take your file. Doing so will enable you to go on the provincial wait list through Health Care Connect (1-800-4451822). However, until such time as you are successful in obtaining a new family doctor you are without a physician and you would depend on other medical treatment venues such as the hospital emergency. 2) If you choose to stay with a retiring family physician until the actual closure date of the practice, you can continue to see that physician but because you have not de rostered from the retiring physician, you can NOT register with Health Care Connect to go on the Provincial wait list for a new family physician. 3) If you are already without a family physician it is highly recommended that you contact Health Care Connect to go on the provincial wait list as most family physicians take new patients from the provincial lists. The Renfrew & Area Health Services Village is a not for profit organization whose mandate includes the recruitment of new physicians. The communities’ financial support has been instrumental in bringing many new physicians to the area and your ongoing support will help to ensure that we are able to continue this essential service in the community. Donations to this valuable program are most appreciated. See our website at www.renfrewareahealthvillage.ca or call (613) 432-3328. The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 9, 2016 15

Muskrat Watershed Council receives $24,852 grant

The Muskrat Watershed Council (MWC) has received a $24,852 grant from the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund to address shoreline erosion on Muskrat Lake and along the Snake River and to support the installation and monitoring of controlled tile drain (CTD) demonstration sites with the goal of reducing nutrient loading in the watershed. Nutrient loading is the main cause of blue-green algal blooms. In partnership with Algonquin College (Pembroke’s) office of applied research and its environmental technician program, and with additional supports from the townships of Whitewater Region, Laurentian Valley, and AdmastonBromley, the MWC will provide shoreline restoration and enhancement on four agricultural properties and four lakefront homes or cottages. At least 1,120 metres of shoreline, and a target of three hectares of land, will be restored by creating vegetative buffers of native plant species or seed. The second part of the project will support the installation of two CTD demonstration sites. CTD systems allow farmers to control when and how much water leaves the field, potentially enhancing crop productivity while also protecting water quality by reducing nutrient loss into the water system at end-of-pipe. The funding will also support water quality monitoring of the CTD demonstration sites, building upon the existing monitoring network supported by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.

A summer co-op student from Algonquin College’s environmental technician program will work as a project co-ordinator for the MWC throughout the summer months to assist in the co-ordination of these various projects. Students from Algonquin College will also assist in shoreline buffering and other outreach activities from September to November as part of their course work. School and community information events will also be held in summer and fall 2016. Two community information events will inform the public about water quality, shoreline buffers, and CTDs. Two school outreach sessions will engage and educate young people about what is being done to save their watershed and how to get involved. The Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund is part of Ontario’s Great Lakes Strategy, which was set up to help communities take action to protect and restore their corner of the Great Lakes, the Ottawa River and connecting channels and watersheds. The Muskrat Watershed Council is a volunteer, community-based, not-for-profit organization whose goal is to improve water quality for our local communities by using scientific and local-based knowledge. We seek to engage and empower people and communities in identifying and reducing nutrient loading from all sources on the Muskrat Lake Watershed. To learn more, please visit www. muskratwatershedcouncil.ca or the Facebook page ‘Muskrat Watershed Council-MWC’ or on Twitter @MuskratWater.

Dragonfly Golf Links offers golfers unique playing experience McLaughlin and Rainboth says he is reinvesting in the course and making upgrades. “He is proud of this and wants it to see it do well,” said Rainboth.

Dragonfly Golf Links is swinging into another successful year. Bill Rainboth, general manager at Dragonfly, is looking forward this season. This is Rainboth’s second year at Dragonfly and he is no stranger to the Ottawa Valley even though he hails from Ottawa. His family was fortunate enough to have a cottage in the Calabogie area and some of his favourite childhood memories include going to the O’Brien Theatre and having lunch at Jim’s Restaurant. He grew up playing golf at the Renfrew Golf Club and Calabogie Highlands. “I fell in love with golf by accident at 13,” said Rainboth. He received a degree in anthropology from Carleton University but knew his true passion was on the golf course. He went back and graduated from Humber College with a diploma in professional golf management. He played in to receive his PGA of Canada status as a full Class A member. Rainboth says he was fortunate to work at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club where Peter Haime gave

He says there are lots of changes this year at the course to help make it another successful season. him a chance to get into golf. He has also worked at the Renfrew Golf Club as the head pro for seven years. He admits there has been a steep learning curve at his new position dealing with the food and beverage

side of things. “It has been a trial by fire but everyone keeps saying last year was the best year ever and that is really nice to hear,” said Rainboth. “It is hard to sit back and enjoy the accolades, I want to push ahead.”

Dragonfly was first constructed in 1996 and opened in 1997. The original owners were Robert and Joy Lanyon who opened the course with just nine holes; it has since expanded to 18 holes. The current owner is Terry

The biggest goal for this season is to continue treating people with a higher level of service than they expect at a price that is lower than they expect. “We are friendly to all golfers of all skill levels and level of experience,” said Rainboth. One unique aspect at the Dragonfly is player assistants who help as starters, greet the players, help to pair players up and circulate the course to monitor play. “Not every course has this,” said Rainboth. “I feel they are a wonderful asset when it comes to keeping a high level of service.” Rainboth says social media plays a big part in their marketing strategy. “We have contests, it’s interactive and people like to see themselves on our page,” said Rainboth. “It’s the most effective and least expensive way of advertising.” The course is active on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Dragonfly welcomes St. Joe’s prom Bill Rainboth

Dragonfly General Manager

It was business as usual this week at Dragonfly Golf Links with our three league nights enjoying good weather and great conditions. But before we get to the results of who won what, I want to thank St. Joseph’s Catholic High School for choosing Dragonfly as their venue for their 2016 Prom. As some of you may know we have a beautiful “Marquis” tent that we use for all our larger functions. Graduating student Sarah Power and her team of organizers and decorators added a touch of class and style to the event that hosted 130 students, guests, and some teachers. Everyone looked either drop-dead gorgeous or dashingly handsome. On behalf of Dragonfly I would like to wish all the graduates well in their future endeavors. LEAGUE PLAY

Men’s night was played on the front nine this past week. On Tuesday, the team from Aikenhead’s Drug Store had just what the doctor ordered winning A flight - by three strokes.

B Flight was won due to an electrifying round from the team of Valley Automation and Controls, and C flight was won by Beatty Pilgrim Construction - a new team to the 2016 Dragonfly Men’s League. Closest to the pin winners were Gord MacMillan on hole five and Bill Baker on hole seven. On Wednesday the men were ‘fit to be tied’ – literally! A and B Flight had three way ties in each division. Clearly the handicap system is doing what was intended to do. Apollo Property Management managed to win the tie-breaker in A flight while Opeongo SUBMITTED Bowlodrome were the winners in B Flight. Dragonfly Golf Links hosted the St. Joseph’s Catholic High School prom on June 4. Closest to the pin winner was Dragonfly Pro Shop employee/superstar Chris McClure, June Craftstravaganza Cat Sale! and Doug Brydges was the lucky winner of From June 01 2016 to June 30 2016 the Adoption fees for the Men’s Night draw. adult cats is just $75.00 which includes: As promised, Pro Shop supervisor Shawn • Spay/neuter Mosiondz delivered on a pleasant night of • microchip • vaccinations golf despite warnings of rain and thunder• de-worming storms. • health check A flight was won by the Top Tees, and B Check out our Available Cats Album on our face book flight was devoured by the Partee girls with page for the many cats we have available for adoption the low score of week – 33. and email us at: valleyanimalrescue@hotmail.com if you are interested in adopting! Closest to the pin winners were Mary Ringrose on hole five, and Janet O’Brien on What: Microchip clinic for cats & dogs (by appointment) and drop-in nail trimming (courtesy of K9 Devine Paw Spa) pa) hole seven. Congrats to all the graduates and golfers!

Rainboth proud of new website From page 25

“I feel we have a young demographic and they definitely use social media,” said Rainboth. They have also launched a new website that is mobile-friendly and offers a number specials to customers. “We are quite proud of it,” said Rainboth. “We like to think we are a little ahead of the curve. We are not afraid to try new things.” They monitor their bookings frequently and are able to adjust their rates accordingly. “We look at the sheet and if there is a gap we drop the price quite aggressively, up to 60 per cent,” said Rainboth. Customers can also purchase a number of products online, including lessons, camps, golf packages and more. They also have online what he calls a ‘Really Stupid deal.’ “We are having some fun and it is really affordable,” said Rainboth. There have also been a number of changes to the course this year, including upgrades to the gardens and improvements in the clubhouse. They have purchased five new commercial kitchen appliances and can cater everything from hot dogs to prime rib and in between. On a daily basis they serve a selection of pub type foods.

“We are pretty proud of our slammer burger,” said Rainboth. “We are faster and have more items to offer this year.” Also new this year is the Tee It Forward program, which is designed for people who are new to the game or don’t hit the ball far. The tees are placed closer to the pin, in front of the ladies tees and construction should be completed soon. “We are fully aware people love getting pars and birdies, it makes it more memorable,” said Rainboth. “Golf is hard, it’s intimidating and we don’t want to be that place.” The tagline for the course is ‘Worth the Drive’ and he says whatever anyone would spend on gas you will get that value back and more. “It’s got something for everyone, there are links style holes, open holes, some that are tree-lined and some holes are challenging to say the least,” said Rainboth. “It’s a great place to hang out, whether you are an aspiring golfer or an accomplished one.” For more information on the course visit: www.dragonflygolf.com .

Midtown wins ladies recreation basketball championship Rob Warren

For the fourth consecutive year it was Midtown Flooring and the Reunions facing off for the championship of the Ladies Renfrew Spring Basketball League. A combination of tenacious defence and a bit of nerves kept the scoring low in the first half. After several lead changes Midtown emerged with an 11-10 edge. Scoring basically doubled in the second half, but neither team could pull away. With

pressure mounting there were more trips to the foul line. Each team made nine free throws, on 14 attempts for Midtown and 16 for the Reunions. With less than a minute remaining, Cindy Lacroix hit a trey for the Reunions to knot the score at 31. Midtown scored first in overtime, kept the Reunions off the score sheet, and added eight more points for a 41-31 win. Sarah Dougherty hit eight free throws in a row on her way to 21 points. Jill Barr added 11. Cindy Lacroix led the Reunions with 13.

We play house league hockey with no body checking. Our teams consists of girls ages 9 – 17 (Peewee, Bantam and Midget) from the Renfrew and Arnprior area. Our GIRL’S TEAMS have a great winning record in league and tournament play. Winning is nice but the most important goal is HAVING FUN. Team Mito runs at ORW with strong Valley presence Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

It was a hot weekend to be running in Ottawa Race Weekend, May 28 and 29. But the 150 runners on Team Mito Canada, including 20 from the Arnprior and Renfrew area, were running to make a difference and could not be stopped. Eight-year-old Nicholas Antonakos, from Arnprior, smiles 90 per cent of the time, says his mother Sarah Tait. He also lives with mitochondrial disease, which is a genetic disorder without a cure. It affects mitochondria, which are the parts of cells that convert food and oxygen into energy. When it fails the cells die. But that doesn’t stop Nicholas from smiling and being so happy other kids want to share in his happiness. This year Team Mito sported bright pink shirts, which was Kate Drury’s favourite colour. The Ottawa youngster succumbed to the disease on Nov. 30, 2015. Julie Drury from Ottawa organized the team and this year the entire team is running to honour Kate. “This year Mito Canada is directing all of the funds raised at Ottawa Race Weekend by Team Mito to mito research at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, said Tait. “It is a special race this year for Kate because normally the funds raised go to Mito Canada. It’s nice because this year the funds are staying local. The team’s goal was to raise $42,200, which is the distance of a marathon (42.2 kilometres). The team surpassed that goal by raising $45,000. Tait has been running since 2012, when Team Mito first entered. This year she ran 28 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 9, 2016

her first half marathon. “Because the funds are staying local, I decided to push myself, said Tait. Tait and those on Team Mito were raising money for one main thing. “One of the biggest things is raising awareness. The reaction is always I’ve never heard of that. It is important people learn more about the disease. The more we raise and the more awareness the research can be done. One of Tait’s friends Natalie Blank-Cazabon ran the five-kilometre race for Team Mito. She was ready to give up one day on her training but that special smile saved the day. “Nicholas was outside smiling away and I said to myself I can’t stop, I got to keep going, said Blank-Cazabon. Members of Team Mito say they are running for those who cannot. “With what all the kids are going through they never give up. We use that smile as motivation. I just think of him and keep pushing. My legs might hurt but it’s nothing like what these kids go through, said Tait. Renfrew resident, Evelyn Furniss, was recently diagnosed with mitochondrial disease. She passed away on May 19 at just nine months old. “For those of us with a Valley connection we will be keeping Evelyn in our thoughts, said Tait. Tait also ran to honour Evelyn. She is also very thankful for all of the Valley’s support. “With the benefit for Evelyn, and Home Hardware in Arnprior supporting the Turn Your Porch Light Green event, there’s always a tremendous amount of support available, said Tait. “It’s one of the best things about Valley living!

Arnprior Stampede promises to be a rootin’ tootin’ time this weekend John Carter

john.carter@metroland.com

Yippee ki yay. It’s rodeo time in Arnprior. The Arnprior Stampede takes over the Arnprior Fairgrounds this weekend (June 10-12). The Arnprior Agricultural Society is bringing back professional rodeo for a second year after it was received so well last year. If the stampede is as popular with the fans as it is with the competitors, it should be big hit again. Organizer Glen Howard pointed out the stampede is being noticed big time by the competitors of the International Professional Rodeo Association. When registration opened up, more than 300 cowboys and cowgirls signed up in 12 hours to come to Arnprior for the first rodeo in this season’s series. “It’s unprecedented,” said Howard. “It shows how much the competitors enjoyed the town and how well the event was run last year.” He noted the hospitality shown the stampede folks was appreciated and even if Arnprior is off

Saddle bronc rider Luke Morgan is one of the many cowboys coming to Arnprior this weekend for the Stampede. the beaten track when it comes to the main circuit, the rodeo folks “love” coming here. “So big kudos to Arnprior.” Another example of how well the Arnprior Stampede is viewed by the professional rodeo association is that it was voted one of the top five new rodeos in North America last year, said Howard.

He quoted B.J. Prince, owner of Rawhide Rodeo, as saying the Arnprior Stampede was a “phenomenal show.” Howard said while the main rodeos, set for 5-8 p.m. Saturday and 2-5 p.m. Sunday, will be the big draw, there is plenty of other family attractions from the noon hours into the evening Saturday and to

closing time at 5 p.m. Sunday. The rodeo activities kick off this Friday, June 10 at 11 a.m. with the two-hour rodeo education event. All area elementary students are invited to the fairgrounds to find out about the rodeo, its animals and hear a safety message from Ontario Power Generation. Howard is disappointed that it’s a professional development day so the schools won’t be able to bus the students to the event like last year. But he notes that it’s a good way for parents to keep their children occupied for a couple of hours on a day off school. The official Stampede kick-off runs 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday with a dirt dance featuring the band Roadhouse. “We have some great entertainment this year,” he said. Valley favourite the Riley New Band will be on stage from 1:30-4:30 Saturday and the Hoss and James Barker bands will entertain after the rodeo from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The Hoss band should be a hit with the older crowd, Howard said, noting the ‘outlaw’ band plays songs of Charlie Daniels, Waylon

Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and more. “Both bands are highly recommended,” he said. In conjunction with the entertainment, there will be a beer garden and a variety of vendors will be on site. On both days, there will be an expanded kids fun zone from 12:30 to 8 p.m. and the Urban Sports Yamaha Excitement ‘Revs Your Heart’ zone from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Furthermore, Hydro One is bringing its huge Electricity Discovery Centre trailer. “There will be a lot more stuff for the kids,” said Howard. “They should get a real kick out of the Hydro trailer.” He said members of the local team penning group, who have been “incredibly helpful” in promoting the stampede, will be more prominent this year. They tended to be lost in the back ring last year, so their Spring Jackpot competition Saturday (1:30-3:30 p.m.) and Jackpot finals (noon to 2 p.m.) will be moved forward into the main ring.“It (stampede) is all coming together,” said Howard. “We’re stoked.”

Quilter’s guild hosts biannual show June 11-12 at MAC Sherry Haaima

sherry.haaima@metroland.com

Quilt lovers, rejoice! A premium opportunity to witness some of the finest quilting skills in the Ottawa Valley is right around the corner. The Quilter’s Guild of Renfrew and Area hosts its biannual quilt show at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre on Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12. AWARDS

The event, which usually attracts about 400 visitors, is held every two years and features pieces not shown at previous shows. Awards for best in show and other distinctions will be given out on Sunday based on votes collected by those attending on Saturday. At a recent guild meeting, members showed off a quilt the group has been working on that encompasses a variety of techniques and skills. With two different kinds of hand quilting and three different types of machine quilting, the piece showcases the diversity of the members’ skills. The guild was formed in 1993 and Dorthy Jackson was the first

president. There were six people in attendance at the first meeting, a number that has since grown to 85 members and counting. “We are a teaching guild,” explains member Joan Lemay. “Guild members are very generous about sharing their knowledge. You do not need to be an experienced member to join the guild.” RAFFLE

Each year the guild makes a quilt and donates it to a local nonprofit organization for use as a fundraiser. This year the group has made a quilt to raffle off in support of the costs of hosting the show. The group meets twice a month, except for July and August, at the Renfrew Recreation Centre. TICKETS

The quilt show runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 12. Barbara Jamieson is the convenor. Tickets are available at Dolan’s Fabric, from guild members and at the door.

Emerson chokes on his own joke The two chokecherry bushes just before the West Hill began were in full bloom. Soon they would be heavy with the little berries and would become jelly. The jars would help fill our cellar shelves, already starting to show the results of Mother’s pickling and preserves. Not only did I love chokecherry jelly, spread on fresh buttered bread, but I often went to the two trees and popped a few in my mouth, enjoying the tart taste of the little berries. My brother Emerson, whose mission in life seemed to be to make my life miserable, one day told me something that just about ruined my love of chokecherries. “Did you hear what happened to the Kallies boys second cousin, once removed? Well, he ate a handful of chokecherries and took a few sips of milk, and he choked to death.” I figured I was safe because even though we had an ample supply of milk in the farm, I hated it. I was sure I could smell cow off a glass of milk, and to get milk into me, Mother had to stir in a spoon of cocoa and a few drops of vanilla. Only then could I get the glass of milk down. So I wasn’t likely to drop dead from eating a few chokecherries. I assured Emerson if he planned on getting rid of me any time soon, it wouldn’t be from eating chokecherries and then drinking milk! That afternoon, Mother made a batch of jelly from what Audrey and I were able to get off the bushes. The house was full of the wonderful smell of boiling berries. And then supper was on the table. And there was a bowl of fresh jelly. Emerson was sitting across from me on the bench that ran under the grape arbour window, and he spotted the jelly as soon as I did. I wasn’t sure what he was up to, but there was no doubt in my mind he was up to something.

Suffering from Diabetes?

Diabetes, one of the most common condition in our current day and age, can often turn into a “silent killer” in advanced stages. During the initial stages we are having many uncomfortable symptoms associated with this condition which interfere in one way or another with our lives. However in advanced stages diabetes can contribute to prolonging our suffering and often healing journeys are incredibly challenged and can even be fatal. I personally observed my grandfather suffer for many years from the ill effects of diabetes, where a wound wasn’t healing, which led to the amputation of a toe and later on even of his leg. Finally, as we see all too often, I saw, what used to be a strong vibrant man, my grandfather giving up and suffering to his final days. That was unfortunately well before I knew about Heilkunst. Diabetes is what I’d call more a challenging by-product of our industrial revolution era. In the majority of cases we can do a lot to try and prevent it - and by this I mean ourselves - not the Doctors. Lifestyle and of course eating habits are considered to be the main culprits in the prevention or the management of diabetes. Stress and emotional challenges should not be overlooked or discredited to be doing their influential part as well. Of course, just as with many other chronic conditions, the moment one organ is chronically challenged or damaged, it will have an effect on other organs as well. This is how the vicious cycle often starts. Our Heilkunst treatment will look at all facets of the diabetic condition, from prevention, hereditary challenges, life styles, nutritional habits to pain management. We will look at organ rejuvenation and will try to bring back a proper organ function of your pancreas. Our Live Blood Analysis will help assist any nutritional deficiencies, so you know where to put your money and efforts to rebuild your body, rather than shooting stars by taking a lot of supplements not knowing whether you actually need or benefit from them. I helped many people manage their diabetes to prevent any medication as well as bringing individuals off the needle to manage their diabetes just with medication. Can you imagine how grateful they are to have this new peace of mind? Can YOU imagine what kind of new freedom and peace it would be if YOU could also personally benefit from our treatment? Not even to mention how happy your spouses, children or loved ones would be to see you manage this condition in a new way.Take Control…Experience Heilkunst!

Parnell V Shalla In loving memory of a dear husband, father, and grandfather, who passed away 1 year ago June 10, 2015. I remember the day I met you and the day God made you mine, I remember the day God took you, and will remember ‘till the end of time. We made our vows together, until death do we part, But the day God took you from me, my whole world fell apart. Sometimes I think I’m dreaming, I can’t believe its true, That I can go on living when I no longer have you. And the memories of the happy years when we were together, The joys, the tears, the love, the fears, will stay with me forever. And when I’m sad and lonely and everything goes wrong, I seem to hear you whisper cheer up and carry on. Each time I see our picture, you seem to smile and say, Don’t cry I’m only sleeping, we’ll meet again someday. Love and miss you Stella and family

Charles William Martin 20 Years have passed dear father. How we miss your smiling face.. But you left us to remember. None on earth can take your place. A happy home we once enjoyedHow sweet the memory stillBut death has left a loneliness the world can never fill We miss you still Your loving wife Meryl and all of the family.

Duncan who passed away June 13, 1976. We think of him in silence, No eyes can see us weep; But still within our aching hearts, His memory we keep. Brian, Bonnie, Mike , Heather, Alex & Hailey MARILYN CATHCART To have to loved and then to part, is the saddest story of the human heart... For you were beautiful, and I have loved you more than life itself. You were my crutch and my Soul Mate. My thoughts are always with you, Your place, no one will fill. In life we loved each other deeply, dearly, totally. In death I love you still. Death hides, but it does not divideThou are but on Christ’s other side, Thou art with Christ and Christ with me, In him i still am close to thee... Your loving husband and our families

In loving memory of Mel McLaughlin who died on June 10, 1992. Those we love don’t go away they walk beside us everyday unseen, unheard, but always near still loved, still missed and very dear. For death leaves a heartache no one can heal, and love leaves a memory no one can steal. Love Mike and Betty

They put jars in every Grade 7 and 8 class in the school and collected the money as it rolled in. To add to the competition, dimes were what students from the other classes used against you in order to up their chances of winning because the more dimes, the less points your class gets, even though all of the money goes towards the fund. As a reward, the top class with the most points got pizza donated by Domino’s in Renfrew. That class was Mrs. Inglis/Herron’s and Mrs. Stamp’s Grade 8 class. The runner up was Mme. McCullough’s

Grade 7 French immersion class, who received ice cream bars as their reward for second place. Shout out to Mr. Barber’s Grade 7 class who raised the most amount of money, but had the most amount dimes as well, which came to a total of more than $100. In total, RCIS went way above their goal and raised $535, which gave three wells instead of their original goal of one to communities in Kenya that lacked the basic necessity of clean water. On May 9, 2016 Domino’s pizza delivered five delicious pizzas to the winning Grade 8 class in recognition of all of the school’s hard work. Each student received two slices and gladly appreciated the generous donation. Now Domino’s is helping Renfrew Collegiate Intermediate School again, by allowing the students to sell coupon cards for their pizza to help fundraise for the their end of the year trips. You can purchase one for $10 from any RCIS student or by coming into the school’s main office to purchase a pizza discount card.

Verch headlines Killaloe July 1 show Canada’s triple threat singer-fiddler-stepdancer (sometimes all at the same time) April Verch takes her riveting live show back to home Valley turf for Killaloe’s Canada Day celebrations. The celebrations will also feature the great music from Odd Man Out, a super fun auction of logger-crafted wooden chairs and of course spectacular fireworks. April Verch not only released two CDs before out of high school, she won the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship. She soon after won the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition, making her

the first woman ever to take both of our country’s two top contests. She also performed at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies (2010). April’s artistry hasn’t gone unnoticed abroad either, with notable roots fan Robert Plant attending one of her UK gigs, plus international booking agents scurrying to represent her in the US, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, France, Australia, Asia, and beyond. Verch takes to the stage at 8 p.m. at St. Andrew’s School field. The event is a free public event. For more visit www.killaloe-hagartyrichards.ca or call 613-757-2300.

More new conventions for players at duplicate bridge Lewis MacDonald

Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club

Ten tables of duplicate bridge competed at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre June 1. The instructive Chalk Talk led by Wayne Daze coached players on the use of cue bids and support doubles. The cue bid Wayne referenced is usually bid when partner makes an overcall. If you have three-card support and nine-11 points, you bid the opposition opener’s first bid at the lowest level. This has the effect of forcing the opposition to bid too high with an opportunity to set them. The support double that Wayne illustrated occurs when opener bids one of a suit, opposition bids, responder bids, opposition’s partner bids, and then opener doubles. The message to responder is that opener has a minimal hand with

three-card support for responder’s EAST-WEST suit. The afternoon saw six successful First: Leanne Cheliak and Rick small slam contracts. Duncan; Ellen Penney and Jane WilSecond: John David and John son brought home a six no-trump Goshue; bid, the only slam attempt on that board. Five pairs made contracts of six hearts on Board 5. These smiling pairs were Marcel Marsan/Arthur Ham, Bev Kobus/ Ian Scott, Carol Sulpher/Dave Sulpher, Margaret McManus/Dennis Gamble, and Mona Brydges/Audrey Jukes. Kudos to all six pairs. Congratulations to the June 1 winners:

Third: Bernadette Culhane and Tom Culhane. Chalk Talks begin at 12:30 and are a popular feature of Renfrew duplicate afternoons.
