TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com The Champlain Flying Club held its annual Fly-in Breakfast on June 9 at the Bruce McPhail Memorial Airport near Cobden.

"We are expecting to beat last year's numbers," club president Bob Braden told the Renfrew Mercury.

In 2018, 650 people attended the breakfast, travelling from a range of 30-plus kilometres.

"They come in planes, cars and motorcycles," Braden noted.

Some of the cars are classic vehicles, which are on display for everyone to enjoy.

In addition to a hearty meal on Sunday morning, the Upper Pontiac Fiddlers entertain guests. Members originate from Cobden and Pembroke, and the group performs Wednesday nights at George's Regal Beagle Bar in Waltham Station (Quebec).

Monies collected by way of the breakfast are applied to the operations of the Champlain Flying Club.

Too, a donation is made to the Cobden & District Food Bank.

FORD'S ECONOMIC STRATEGY SACRIFICES TEACHING JOBS DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Rural economies are currently driven in large part by the public sector jobs they maintain. Police officers, hospital workers, and teachers are high paying jobs that spread money throughout a community, from the car dealership to the home renovator.

Some of those jobs are likely to disappear under Premier Doug Ford's economic strategy, which sees government play a lesser role. The PCs are clearing space - through tax cuts, a reduction in regulations, and other measures - for private sector to move in.

That change in strategy prompted a 150-person protest in front of PC MPP John Yakabuski's constituency office in Pembroke on June 7. The public-school system will see 23 jobs lost in the

Barber's first concern is the impact on students when classrooms go from 22 to 28, eventually resulting in the loss of 240 course options and 30 to 40 teachers. Simi-

lar figures will apply to other boards. But he also worries about impacts to the wider economy. He knows of a teacher whose spouse is a well-known business owner.

They might move because their child won't get the course options available in

larger centres. The business and its jobs would go too.

"This government talks about being open for business but is taking money out of things that would encourage companies to come here," Barber said.

However, Ontario is wrestling with a $11.7 billion deficit. Interest payments alone represent 8 per cent of the province's revenue, making it the fourth-largest spending area. Spending cuts are one way to tackle the deficit, but according to conservative economists so are tax cuts to the wealthy.

Trickle-down economics, introduced by Thatcher and Regan in the early 1980s, says more money in the hands of the job-creating rich will eventually filter down to the middle class.

The Ford government quickly cut taxes to the rich when it gained power.

So which is better: laissez

faire capitalism or economic socialism? The county's economic development branch passed the question off to chief administrative officer Paul Moreau. The county's top bureaucrat said elected officials have been given information on the impacts of Queen's Park's new strategy.

What they do with it is up to them.

"I'm in no position to comment on policy. As an administrator I can only provide the options: increase property taxes or service cuts," Moreau said, on June 10. "Council will be discussing that very topic at Wednesday's meeting."

Kyte mentioned that even though her experience has been a positive one, it is not the same for others who are disowned, abandoned and shamed for being 'different'.

"This morning, when I shared the history of LGBTQ legal persecution on social media, I called this flag a beacon of hope," she said, "One that shines a light into the darkness for those afraid coming out. It tells people they have a safe place to live their lives openly and honestly."

An enthusiastic crowd gathered in Low Square to witness the historic event which also marked the beginning of Pride Week, a week where LGBTQ individuals are celebrated.

Chris Kyte from myFM spoke before the crowd, sharing her experiences as part of the LGBTQ community. She said she felt honoured to be a part of such a historic occasion, as it was also a significant one.

"We always support people that are shorter, taller, fat or skinny when they get bullied. I don't want to see another person have to end their life because they cannot be who they are," Sidney said. "I want to commend the town council for voting on this, and I want to thank everyone for coming out today."

Jill Holroyd of Plag Renfrew County, an organization spearheading rainbow flag raisings across the county, and Susan Tough of Trinity St. Andrew's United Church, which became an affirming ministry in fall 2018, were also present for the ceremony.

Similar events were held in McNab/Braeside, Arnprior, Horton and Pembroke to commemorate the start of Pride Week.

The Renfrew branch of the Royal Canadian Legion commemorated the 75th anniversary of D-Day on June 6.

A ceremony was held in front of the cenotaph at Low Square.

A wreath was placed at the cenotaph to mark the anniversary.

Members of the legion, the Ladies' Auxiliary, the police department, the fire department and the public were present for the ceremony.

On June 6, 1944, 10,500 Canadian soldiers landed on Juno Beach as part of the invasion of Normandy.

Private George Edward "Ted" Millar, a Renfrew native, was among the group of Canadians that day.

He was one of the victims of the "Ardenne Abbey Massacre", one of the worst war crimes in Canadian history according to the Canadian Encyclopedia.

Santa Fe restaurant in Renfrew has closed its doors.

On Wednesday, June 5, a sign appeared on the restaurant's front door that said: 'Sorry Permanently Closed.'

The Raglan Street restaurant's website says that as of Nov. 15, 2017, the business was under new ownership with Andrea Lacourse-Labelle becoming the managing owner.

In April 2018, the Raglan St. Lounge, a space with lounge chairs, leather couches, high bar tables and traditional tables, was launched above the existing restaurant.

Santa Fe was a member of Renfrew's Business Improvement Area and president Jean Hughes says the closure is sad news.

"It's really sad to see yet another business close," said Hughes. "It's kind of a sign of people not supporting down-

town businesses and online shopping and leaving town to shop instead of keeping it local."

Last year's downtown construction and the long winter the region just experienced couldn't have helped the situation, Hughes added.

The time to buy local is now, she stressed.

"I am sure there are more businesses on the edge. If we don't start supporting our local businesses we're not going to have a downtown at all," she said.

Some form of restaurant has operated in the space for close to 20 years and Santa Fe has been in existence for the past seven or eight. In the past several weeks, Santa Fe's patio, a wooden structure that extends on to the sidewalk, was constructed.

Messages left at the establishment have not yet been responded to.

RENFREW BIA KICKS OFF NEW SUNDAY INITIATIVE BREAKFAST WITH A SMILE

TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com Super Sunday Downtown kicked off in Renfrew on June 9.

Presented by the Renfrew Business Improvement Association (BIA), the new initiative, takes place in the downtown core, and it encompasses local merchant sidewalk sales, market and farm vendors, live music and artisans and crafters.

Three vendors were set up in front of Scotiabank on Raglan Street South: TobyandBellas (John and Melinda Reith), Side Hustle Stitchery (Delaney Cournoyea) and Royalty Custom Designs (Jocelyn Brannigan).

Located in Deep River, TobyandBellas offers all natural pet treats, which are homemade and healthy.

"Our treats do not contain any synthetic ingredients," Melinda told the Renfrew Mercury.

TobyandBellas products contain no fillers, no additives and no preservatives. To name a few of the treats available: blueberry bacon kale drops, chamomile calming cookies, cranberry pumpkin muffins, minty breath bites and pumpkin ginger cookies.

Barrett Chute Road Township of Greater Madawaska County of Renfrew This Notice is being issued to advise the public, stakeholders, and agencies of the Township of Greater Madawaska’s implementation of the Barrett Chute Road Rehabilitation project, located between Renfrew County Road 508 (Calabogie Road) to approximately 3.5 km south on Barrett Chute Road. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is proposing to redevelop the existing Calabogie Generating Station (GS). This proposed undertaking will involve an Environmental Assessment (EA) under the Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA) Class EA for Waterpower Projects as a Project Associated with Existing Infrastructure. Constructed in 1917, the existing station has an installed capacity of 5 megawatts (MW) and is now at its end of life stage. OPG intends to redevelop the site and increase the station’s capacity to approximately 10 to 15 MW.

NOTICE OF RESCHEDULED SECOND AND LAST OPEN HOUSE FOR THE PROPOSED UNDERTAKING UNDER THE ONTARIO WATERPOWER ASSOCIATION CLASS EA FOR WATERPOWER PROJECTS: CALABOGIE GENERATING STATION REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT The Proposed Undertaking is on the Madawaska River within the village of Calabogie, in the Township of Greater Madawaska, Ontario, as detailed on the map below. OPG does not plan to alter the approved water levels and flows as described in the Madawaska River Water Management Plan (WMP). As such, the anticipated zone of impact for the project is limited to the immediate area around the station (see shaded/hatched area on the map). A minor amendment to the WMP is anticipated under the Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act. This notice and public consultation process for the project under the Class EA is intended to coordinate and meet the notification requirements relevant to the planning stage of the project under both the Environmental Assessment Act and Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act statutes.

The Class EA process requires OPG to undertake an evaluation of the project to evaluate its potential effects to the environment (positive and negative) and prepare a detailed Environmental Report. The evaluation and resulting environmental report will assess the potential effects of the proposed waterpower project on the environment during both construction and operation.

OPG has identified certain environmental components that it expects to be the focus of the proposed project and will present findings about the proposed project, environmental effects and proposed mitigation and monitoring measures. Consultation with Indigenous communities and the public is an integral component of this process and allows interested parties to provide comments on the project. You are invited to provide comments on the issues to be addressed.

For information on the project proposal, to raise any issues or concerns, or to be placed on the project’s mailing list, please contact one of the individuals identified below. If the project proceeds as scheduled, construction could commence in 2020.

PLEASE, GIVE TURTLES A 'BRAKE' This time of year, turtles are prevalent on our roadways, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada is asking motorists to give turtles a "brake."

We are now in an active period when turtles are moving from their usual habitats and motorists encounter turtles on busy roads in major centres, on back roads or on the way to the cottage. Turtles are vulnerable especially between now and October.

Like other reptiles, turtles are cold-blooded so basking on gravel, sandy road sides or warm asphalt feels good on cool spring days. Adult turtles set out to mate and find nesting sites.

In late summer and early fall, newly-hatched turtles travel from their nest to a nearby wetland or water body.

While a turtle's shell can protect them from predators, it's no match for a car.

Turtle deaths are a major issue in some parts of the country, and all eight turtle species in Ontario are at risk.

The Blanding's turtle is more endangered than pandas. In Quebec, six turtle species are provincially designated as threatened or vulnerable.

When a turtle is struck by a car, it can have a bigger impact than just the loss of that one turtle. Studies show just a five per cent increase in annual mortality can put an entire population at risk of decline.

We encourage motorists to slow down when they see a turtle on the road and check to be sure they can safely steer around it.

If you want to help, ensure your safety is paramount on the roadways.

Move the turtle in the direction that it's crossing.

For smaller turtles like Blanding's and Midland painted, simply pick them up and carry them across the road.

If you're helping a snapping turtle, be wary of their spiked tails and sharp snouts. They can be heavy too up to 75 pounds. To move these guys, lift them using their "handles" on either side of their shell by the tail and move them like a wheelbarrow across the road.

Some people may carry turtle gear in their vehicle. A shovel and a car mat are handy to help guide the turtle.

Pushing or shoving turtles across roads with your feet or sticks isn't advisable. Their shells aren't as thick underneath, and rough pavement can do a lot of damage. Other threats to turtles include habitat loss, invasive species and illegal collection for the pet trade.

Whether you're a turtle helper or you drive on past them, please just be kind to them.

It is one of the few efficient operations in Ontario and should be commended for its professionalism and dedication. The care the paramedics give to their housebound patients both old and young is beyond excellent.

That being said, my one complaint is about the shocking over-supply of surgical dressings. In

every case requiring regular home visits a large container of supplies is delivered to the patient's home. At the end of the treatment there are always surplus items - syringes, pads, sterile solution, needles, scissors, dressings.

Apparently they cannot be returned to source.

I cringe when I think of the expense to the consumer of this valuable material being thrown out or stuffed away "just in case." There must be a more efficient way of distributing such necessary equipment which might even reduce the operating costs of the service.

Of course, saving money seems to be the last concern of our freespending government.

We are all well aware of that.

RVH GOLF CLASSIC RAISES MORE THAN $65,000 SHERRY HAAIMA sherr y.haaima@metroland.com The 21st annual Renfrew Victoria Hospital Golf Classic, held June 7 at the Renfrew Golf Club, raised more than $65,000 for the oncology department.

More than 40 teams enjoyed warm, sunny weather for the tournament, which included a silent auction.

Funds raised will go towards improvements to the unit and upgrades to equipment. The oncology department marks 25 years of service this year.

The RVH Catch the Ace lottery contest is continuing - draws take place every Thursday and tickets are available at numerous locations.

Students, parents, law enforcement and volunteers journeyed up main street and to the Renfrew OPP Detachment where a barbecue was held.

A child in the area of Munroe Avenue East in Renfrew was approached by a suspicious person while walking home from school on May 23, according to OPP. The only descriptors obtained were a black hoodie (hood up), and black and white running shoes. Police are asking the public to use vigilance. At the time of the incident it was raining.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Renfrew OPP. The detachment covering the county’s southern area investigated 259 calls for service between May 27 and June 2, including seven domestic disputes. One person was charged with assault; one with fail to comply with recognizance and three counts of fail to comply with probation. Names are not released in domes-

tic cases.

OPP responded to a motor vehicle collision in Arnprior May 29. As a result of the investigation, Mike Mulholland, 61, of McNab/ Braeside has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon and five counts of assault. The accused was released on a promise to appear in Renfrew court June 19.

On the same day, OPP responded to a dispute at a residence in Arnprior. As a result of the investigation, Shawn St. Louis, 31, of Arnprior has been charged with assault. The accused was released on a promise to appear in Renfrew court July 3.

On June 1, officers responded to a traffic complaint in the Township of Horton. As a result of a traffic stop Jason Bradford, 33, of McNab/Braeside, has been charged with im-

paired driving and operating a motor vehicle with over 80mg of alcohol. The accused was released on a promise to appear and will appear in Renfrew court June 19.

On the same day, officers responded to a traffic complaint call in Admaston/Bromley. John Yakabuski and other cabinet ministers in the Ford government got hammered by social media during a coordinated beer-hunting stunt.

The Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP and his PC colleagues each went in faux search of beer in their ridings the first weekend of June. Some went to convenience stores; Yakabuski visited a Shell gas station to tell Twitter followers that it is "only fair" for the owner to be able to sell beer and wine.

It says craft beer should have higher sales at the Beer Store, that other jurisdictions have private retailers selling alcohol, and that 9,100 jobs would be created by increasing the number of alcohol retailers.

None of that meant much to many of the at least 130 commentators on Yakabuski's Twitter account. Several posted clapping seal gifs to say Yakabuski isn't independent-minded, that he unquestioningly follows Premier Doug Ford's lead. Others indicated that alcohol issues (including buck-a-beer and drinking in parks legislation) shows the government's priorities are out of place.

"I'm no fan of the degree to which the big international brewers have been granted as much control as they have," wrote Stephen Wickens, "but there are real emergencies going ignored while this government focuses on bread and circuses."

The tweet seemed to open the door to more gripes people have with the party.

Sandra Bray said, "Ontario today: $1 billion for beer choice, $3.5 billion lost on cap-and-trade, $100 million on White Pines cancellation, $100 million on Hydro One interference, Brad Blair lawsuit, carbon tax lawsuit."

Bachmann contacted Warmup Canada to install electrical radiant floor heating to make it more energy-efficient.

"The installation investment is slightly lower than the traditional system with forced air," she said. "But you don't waste space for the furnace and duct system. You also save money, as the heat output is spread evenly throughout the rooms."

A Rinnai Natural Gas Hot Water on Demand system, which can deliver hot water in an instant, was also installed.

Any structure made in 1875 poses a challenge for someone looking to restore it. Luckily, there are people like Katrin Bachmann and Jack Gougeon who take on these projects to restore history.

Bachmann and Gougeon recently renovated their cabin at 95 June St., giving the property a modern touch while keeping the traditional feel.

Bachmann, "The Innovator," is a German engineer, the 1875 cabin being her first project in Canada.

She implemented as much energy-efficient and lowfootprint engineering design as possible.

"Being from Germany, I am used to the idea of implementing energy-efficient designs into houses," she said. "So it was a shock to me that this wasn't the norm here in Canada."

Gougeon, "The Tradition Keeper," is a Canadian contractor who has been in the construction business for over 25 years. He supervised the renovation process, managed the trades and contractors and made sure they followed the design and work to satisfy Bachmann's "green idea" and quality standards.

After purchasing the cabin in October 2017, they both set out to find renovation and building materials that could bring the structure into the present day.

The main goal to start was to restore the home quickly and relist for a profit.

However, in December 2017, and after numerous delays, total demolition and reconstruction took place.

HORTON TOWNSHIP VYING TO BE CANADA'S MOST ACTIVE COMMUNITY TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com Horton Township is urging its residents to get active, taking part in the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge.

"Log your minutes!" recreation committee member Tina Hunt stressed.

Hunt spoke with the Renfrew Mercury about the challenge on June 9 outside the Horton Community Centre. The goal is simple: to get people active. Everyone is being encouraged to help the township reach its goal of being Canada's Most Active Community.

Horton Township has joined a number of municipalities across the country in this new initiative from ParticipACTION, which runs from May 31 to June 16.

On Sunday, Hunt noted, Horton Township was in seventh place out of 20 communities.

"They list the top 20 communities on the ParticipACTION website," she said.

Horton could win the challenge's top prize of $150,000, which must be put toward physical activity initiatives.

"It has to be spent on recreation ... upgrades to facilities, buying equipment, etc.," Hunt explained.

"It will be a decision of council, staff and the recreation committee."

Bike riding, cutting the grass, swimming, walking, running, playing soccer or baseball ... every minute of physical activity counts.

Finalists will be revealed on June 18, with the winning municipality announced on June 27.

"After the finalists are picked, they must answer a few questions ... how would they use the money, why do they need it," Hunt said.

RENFREW TENNIS PAYS TRIBUTE TO FOUNDING MEMBER JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com On May 25, the Renfrew Tennis Club's (RTC) Morning Tennis Group honoured one of their founding members, Lila Prince, with a Memorial Fundraising Tournament.

All four courts were filled with doubles matches, and the two new court-side picnic tables were decorated with fresh-cut tulips and

scrapbooks of all the sports accomplishments, newspaper clippings and photos that her daughter, Jane, brought to share.

There was a pizza lunch courtesy of Renfrew Pizzeria and a cake decorated by Renfrew Metro with Prince's favourite catchphrase, "There's a whole lotta love here!"

tions, cheer on the players and share memories together.

The next tournament, The Lila Prince Fun Tournament, will be held on June 14 starting at 6 p.m.

A MOST UNUSUAL ALLIANCE MICHAEL RUNTZ LOOKS AT LICHENS MICHAEL RUNTZ Column

The other day I was taken to the top of a spectacular lookout in Muskoka. The view was breathtaking, with miles of rolling, forested hills and sparkling lakes in sight. But when I looked down at my feet, the view was equally spectacular. Circles of lime green decorated the ageless pink granite, with splashes of black and grey scattered hither and yonder. What I was seeing was not tasteless graffiti but a field of living organisms. The rocks were painted with lichens.

Now, lichens are neither

plants, nor are they ordinary entities. They are unique in the natural world, for lichens are actually two very different organisms living as one. Each species - and there are at least 14,000 types of lichens found throughout the world - consists of a fungus and an alga living in a symbiotic relationship. The fungus provides a house for the alga, which in turn produces food through photosynthesis. Remarkably, when separated from each other and grown in the laboratory, the fungus partner cannot grow into its lichen shape.

Only when its alga component is united with it does it return to its characteristic form. In his beautiful and incomparable book, Lichens of North America, Irwin Brodo calls this change the "mysterious transformation."

Lichens can be found

growing on almost any surface, from rocks to tree trunks, from exposed earth to graveyard headstones.

Lacking roots, most of their mineral intake is derived from moisture in the air, with rainfall and surface run-off providing some moisture as well.

The lichens we tread on while climbing rocky slopes are called crustose lichens because they form a tight crust on the rock. Their growth is very slow, often less than a millimetre per year. Thus, when we see brightly painted rocks, thousands of years have transpired since lichens first colonized them.

Some lichens form upright structures, a few not unlike miniature, colourful golf tees. These are fruticose lichens. Those lovely hanging lichens known as old man's beard (usnea) belong in this category, as do

for camouflage. Northern parulas, tiny, colourful warblers that sport mossy green backpacks, place their nests high up in hanging clumps of old man's beard, making them one of the most difficult of all bird nests to find.

Most lichens do not tolerate air pollution, which is why the centres of large cities are void of them. Thus, lichens behave like canaries in a coal mine.

Gordon Davis Lee Raycroft of Braeside was 83. Beloved husband of the late Bethel (nee Yourt). Dearly loved and proud father of Randy, Brent (Heather Leckie) and Janice McLean. Predeceased by his daughter, Heather Raycroft (Cliff Scott) and an infant daughter, Joanne. Cherished and much loved by his grandchildren: Leslie Lambert (Crystalee Gaudaur), Krista Lambert-Nicol (David Nicol), Rebeka Borshevsky, Rachel Borshevsky (Ryan Terry), Taylor Scheel, Davis Scheel, Ashley Raycroft and Amy Raycroft.

1935-2019 With heavy hearts we announce that Bernadette passed away peacefully at home in Orléans, surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday evening, June 4th, 2019. Beloved wife of Ronald “Ron” Tourangeau. Dearly loved mother of Casey (Joan) of Orléans and Vincent (Mireille) of Toronto; cherished and proud grandmother of Finn and Jean-Pierre.

Fondly remembered by her numerous nieces and nephews and special friend, Sheila Tousignant; last surviving child of the late John Edward Casey and the late Margaret Mary Whelan of Montreal; predeceased by her sisters, Mary Roberts and Kathleen Barry, and by her brothers, John, Gerry, and Bill Casey.

With a BA in English and Master of Religious Education, Bernadette was a passionate educator, teaching in Arnprior, Kingston, Brantford, Iroquois Falls, Alameda CA, and Newmarket; she later served as a resource person for the Catholic Office of Religious Education (CORE), Archdiocese of Toronto, and finally as Director of the National Office of Religious Education for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), in Ottawa. Bernadette was a loving mother, grandmother, and aunt who especially enjoyed nature and the outdoors with her sons and grandsons. She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends and was a voracious reader.

Bernadette’s final care has been entrusted to the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior where visitation was held on Monday, June 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 7:45 p.m. A twilight tribute immediately followed in the Pilon Family Chapel where friends and family had the opportunity to share stories of precious Bernadette. Visitation resumed on Tuesday, June 11th from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. A Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. John Chrysostom Church, Arnprior on Tuesday afternoon at 1 o’clock. The Funeral Service was conducted Thursday June 6, 2019 at the Boyce Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Interment White Lake Community Cemetery. A Reception followed at the White Lake United Church Hall. It is with immeasurable sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Richard at the Almonte General Hospital on June 4, 2019 at the age of 71 after heroically battling both diabetes and dementia. Born April 15th, 1948 to the late Nellie and Roger LaRocque. He will be eternally missed by his loving wife of 46 years Deb, his children Jeff and Greg and his grandchildren Ethan and Gwen. Predeceased by his older brother Roger (Claire), he will be fondly be remembered by his surviving siblings: Denise (Gib), Bobby (Mary), Paul (Ruth), Anne (Peter), Doug, Karl and his many nieces and nephews. Richard selflessly served the public for over 50 years working in the hardware business, and as a longtime volunteer in the Stittsville community.

A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at a later date.

Miss Crosby called it health class. I had no idea why she called it that, but once a month we had health class, which I didn't like one bit.

She talked about things I thought were better left alone.

Like the time she talked about cold sores, and there sat poor Cora with one on her top lip the size of a ripe strawberry. Cora squirmed in her seat through the entire lesson on what caused them and how to treat them.

Well, for the last class, Miss Crosby asked a question. What was our favourite food? Of course, we had to write it down in our scribbler, the one used only in health class.

My favourite food was potatoes, but I couldn't spell potatoes, and I racked my brain for the entire five minutes Miss Crosby gave us to write it down.

I thought of drawing a picture of a potato, but I knew she wouldn't go for that. All I could think of was the word "milk" because I saw it on our milk cans, and so I knew how to spell it. But I hated milk with a passion. The ice box could never get it cold enough to suit me, and to me, it always smelled of cow, but I could spell "milk" easily, so that is what I printed in my health scribbler, even though it was my least favourite food.

I spent the rest of the class terrified that Miss Crosby would ask me to read out my answer to her question. I breathed a sigh of relief when she passed over me, and of course, there was bad Marguirite dying to be asked, and waving her hand in the air like she wanted to go out to the back house. Miss Crosby ignored her.

The lesson was lost on me, but my sister Audrey said it was meant to teach us the importance of eating healthy foods.

ies from Briscoe's General Store. Needless to say the teacher was quick to tell Cecil one or two cookies was fine, but she certainly wouldn't recommend eating them instead of eating vegetables and meat.

Sitting around the supper table that night, as usual, Mother asked all of us what we had learned in school that day. She wasn't happy that I had lied about what my favourite food was.

There on the table, piled high in a bowl, was a mountain of creamy whipped potatoes, with a big dab of butter sitting right on top. I thought of all the ways potatoes were served at mealtime, and how I loved every last dish.

Mother made potato soup, and I have no idea what she put into it, other than finely chopped onions and cream, but I do know there wouldn't be a drop left to give to our dog, Sport, when the meal was over!

Father of course, had to have fried potatoes for breakfast. And the wonderful smell of them being cooked while I was upstairs getting dressed for school made my mouth water. It was a special

treat when Father himself decided it was time we had a good feed of German potato pancakes.

I would watch him mash them fine, add onions, form them into patties, then dip them in whipped eggs, and drop them into sizzling bacon drippings in the big iron fry pan.

I asked Audrey if she thought I should tell Miss Crosby the next day that I really loved potatoes, and tell her the real reason I wrote "milk." My wise sister said just to forget about it. She was pretty sure the next health class would be dealing with head lice, a problem that seemed to occur at least once or twice a year at the Northcote School.

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires and injuries in the province. Always stay in the kitchen or near your barbecue and watch what you are cooking.

"Only working smoke

and carbon monoxide alarms give you early notification and the time you and your family need to safely escape a fire," Welsh said. "Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly. Many fatal fires occur at night when everyone is asleep, so early warning is crucial to survival."

He urges the public to have a plan.

"Fire and smoke move faster than you. There's no time to figure out how to escape your home after a fire starts. Practise a home fire escape plan before there's a fire so you can get out safely," said Welsh.
