News - It took just 27 minutes after the closing of the polls for John Yakabuski to be declared elected for a fourth straight term as MPP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. “I wasn’t expecting not to be elected,” said Yakabuski, two days before his 57th birthday. But he didn’t hide the disappointment with his own party’s results in a fourth straight defeat at the hands of the Liberals. While Yakabuski’s June 12 victory margin was more than 17,000 votes, the Conservatives only won 28 seats to the Liberals’ 58, good enough for a majority. The New Democratic Party won 22 seats. Echoing what his leader, Tim Hudak, said election night, the Barry’s Bay MPP called the overall results “quite disappointing” and “bittersweet.” Having inherited the premiership when Dalton McGuinty left the post, Kathleen Wynne now leads a new Liberal government after becoming Ontario’s first female premier to be elected by the people of the province. The Conservatives are left short of power after again struggling with the delivery of their message. “It’s clear we miscalculated the push-back on the single most controversial part of our platform, which was the reduc-

tion of the public service by 100,000 jobs over four years,” said Yakabuski. “I think it was messaged badly and it was reported poorly in the media, based on our messaging, and I don’t think we ever recovered from that,” added Yakabuski. “It clearly had an effect on our riding as well. When I was campaigning, I was extremely pleased with the response from people, but the numbers for the Liberals and the NDP (were) higher this time than they were in 2011. And I don’t think it’s anything to do with the job I’ve been doing … it was similar across the province.” Yakabuski captured 61.1 per cent of the vote, down from more than 70 per cent in 2011. “He works for the people, and he’s visible all the time,” said long-time Progressive Conservative supporter Glen Campbell of Renfrew in expressing satisfaction with Yakabuski’s victory. Campbell also expressed surprise that the Liberal Party was re-elected with such ease. “I (feel) very sick. There must be a lot of very stupid people in Ontario … I’m very disappointed. Maybe they went too far to the right (by promising to cut too many public sector jobs).” Yakabuski said he thought the PCs were preparing for a stronger result than in 2011,

MPP John Yakabuski had plenty to celebrate last Thursday night. Aside from retaining his seat in the Ontario Legislature, representing Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, he celebrated his 57th birthday Saturday. At his victory party in the Pembroke Best Western, staff and supporters surprised him with a birthday cake. He enjoys the moment with granddaughter Lilli. particularly after Hudak’s strong showing in the TV debate. But not so, as Hudak saw the writing on the wall Election Night when he announced he will not lead the PCs in the next election. Perhaps, just perhaps, one

of the candidates for the PC leadership could be John Yakabuski. When asked about that possibility, Yakabuski smiled and called it “a question for another day.” Among the 50 or so people who attended the victory

celebration for Yakabuski at the Pembroke Best Western (including several Yakabuski family members) was Pembroke Mayor Ed Jacyno. See BITTERSWEET, page 2
