FOREST LIFE EXPO DRAWS A CROWD TARA GESNER tgesner@metroland.com The Forest Life Expo in Renfrew June 14-16 celebrated all those who work, play and live in the forest. The trade show, which was well attended, took place inside and outside the Ma-Te-Way Activity Center. Festivities included exhibitions of equipment, demonstrations, musical entertainment, wagon rides, good food and local products made from the forest. John Foreman of Bancroft entertained expo visitors with his authentic broadaxe hand hewing, along with a few songs and stories. According to Foreman, "the unique quality of authentic broadaxe hand hewing is the imperfections arrived at while striving for perfec-
tion." Expo attendees were wowed by Pura Vida Crafts artisans Wayne and Connie Brown. From Elk Lake, Wayne transformed a log into a piece of art with a chainsaw right before their eyes. Connie applied the texturing, the finishing touches. Works were available to purchase on site. Sawmill enthusiasts were able to compare the sawmills from several different companies, and the wide range of allterrain vehicle (ATV) rides on display garnered much attention. Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry John Yakabuski opened the Forest Life Expo on Friday night. He was joined by Renfrew Mayor Don Eady. The event offered something for everyone in the family.

RENFREW COUNCIL CONSIDERING NEW TOURISM TAX JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com A new tax on tourism may lead to more revenue for the Town of Renfrew. The Ottawa Valley Tourism Association (OVTA) made a presentation to Renfrew council on June 11 outlining the administration and potential benefits of the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT). OVTA president Chris Melmoth, along with tourism development officer Melissa Marquardt and manager Alastair Baird, presented the details of the MAT to council. "This would be a wonderful opportunity...for Renfrew and Renfrew County in the long run," Melmoth said. "Most of the municipalities we have visited in Ontario so far have agreed to implement this new tax." In Renfrew County, the OVTA has visited Admaston/ Bromley, Deep River and North Algona Wilberforce, with plans to visit Greater Madawaska in the near future. In December 2017, the Government of Ontario updated the Municipal Act, granting municipalities the authority to implement a tax on transient accommodations. The province has left it up to individual municipalities to decide whether or not to implement the MAT. They also
THE ISSUE: RENFREW COUNCIL IS DISCUSSING THE MUNICIPAL ACCOMMODATION TAX LOCAL IMPACT: SHOULD COUNCIL DECIDE TO IMPLEMENT IT, A NEW TAX WILL BE ADDED TO TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATIONS SUCH AS HOTELS AND MOTELS have the flexibility to determine the design, administration and collection of the tax, including its rate. The majority of municipalities that implemented the MAT so far have set the rate at four per cent. The municipality determines the types of short-term accommodations, defined as overnight stays of 30 days or less, that the tax can be applied to. This includes hotels, motels, lodges, resorts, inns, bed and breakfasts, cottages, Airbnbs and campsites. Municipalities are required to share a minimum of 50 per cent of the MAT revenues with an eligible tourism entity. Whether that is the OVTA or another entity is entirely up to the municipality.
Jonathan Mulvihill/Torstar OVTA president Chris Melmoth presents details and potential benefits of the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) to Renfrew council on June 11. The revenue potential, taking into account a 40 per cent occupancy rate and not including campsites or RV sites, would have Renfrew County as a whole gaining around $1.3 million, half of which goes to the town to spend on whatever services are needed. The Town of Renfrew's share would be just under $56,000. Coun. Tom Sidney asked if the Town of Renfrew would have control over how the money given to the eligible tourism entity is spent. Melmoth said while they wouldn't have direct control, they would have some influence.
"If you decide to move forward with the MAT, you will negotiate a partnership with the eligible tourism entity on how those dollars are spent," Melmoth said. "You're not going to have direct control over that in the partnership, but you will have an opportunity to 'massage' where those monies are potentially spent so it helps benefit the individual municipalities." Members of council were interested in this proposal, especially Reeve Peter Emon, who said it is a good way to not only invest in the tourism industry, but to get people coming back to Renfrew and attract new businesses. "We need people coming back to our town," he said. Emon hopes to have this tax in place by Jan. 1, 2020, in the event that council decides to implement the MAT. The matter will be returned to in future council meetings when a formal proposal is drawn up.
STORY BEHIND THE STORY:
The MAT was first amended into the Municipal Act, 2001 in December 2017. Since then, many municipalities in Ontario have implemented the tax, the norm rate being 4 per cent. The Renfrew Mercury listened to officials discuss the tax and how it could benefit the town and local economy.

"When it was returned to us recently, we had it restored by the Renfrew Industrial Commission, Marshall's Welding and Fabrication and Sweet's Décor. McSheffrey said the siren is one of the featured artifacts in the museum moving forward, and Reesor will be a guest at the unveiling ceremony. She added that while the siren is an important piece of history, the oldest and largest artifact is the museum itself. FIRSTGENERATION, BUT CANADIAN NONETHELESS To the editor: With July 1 fast approaching, we make ready to celebrate our 152nd Canada Day. My parents, along with an infant daughter, came to Canada in early 1959. Arriving at the Halifax Harbour, N.S., they made their way to Ottawa. My father, with the help of my late Uncle Fahid, found housing and a job. I was born in 1967, our 100th anniversary of Canada's Confederation ... the fifth of seven children. People refer to me as a first-generation Canadian since my parents, although Canadian citizens, were born elsewhere. My parents decided to gift me with the name Shriefe pronounced Sh-Ree-Fee, roughly translated to "honesty." I was named after my mother's favourite sister, my late Aunt Shriefe. In my youth, I dreamed of changing my name. When I married my husband Jeff, I found my opportunity but decided not to. I loved my Aunt Shriefe, and it would have broken my mother's heart. I took my husband's name though; Mrs. Woods is easier to say. Growing up, I felt a constant struggle to find my identity as a Canadian. Not from my parents, but by my fellow Canadians. I dreaded meeting people and introducing myself for the first time. Say Shriefe and you get your first ques-
tion of many. "What did you say?" or "Pardon?" I respectfully repeated my name, saying "Sh-Ree-Fee ... think of the actor Omar Sharif ... the female version of Sharif is Shriefe." OK, different spelling, but you get my point (Note: Millennials have no idea who I am talking about). The next question, "Where are you from?" My reply: "Ottawa." Then, "No, where were you born?" Again, "Ottawa ... the Ottawa Civic Hospital ... my three kids were born there too!" I quickly add, "Do you mean my heritage? Lebanese." The normal response ... is I am told I am Lebanese. What? Did I miss something? I am Canadian, firstgeneration but Canadian nonetheless. Taking pride in my heritage, but even more so my nationality. I take pride in my country, my homeland, my people and even occasionally my government ... pun intended. I rejoice our military and weep for the loss of our fallen soldiers yesterday, today and in the future. I sing our anthem with joy and enthusiasm. So, in closing, from one very proud Canadian, Happy Canada Day. May you celebrate surrounded by family and friends this joyous time and be thankful to those who came before you to make you one of Canada's great people. Shriefe Woods Renfrew

WHO WE ARE LETTERS & COMMENTARY HAVE RESPECT FOR FUNERAL PROCESSIONS To the editor: In the not too distant past, when a funeral cortege was passing pedestrians stopped, vehicles travelling in the opposite direction pulled to the side of the road and stopped. I was always awed by the respect for the dead and the consideration for the mourners displayed by this simple custom. A few days ago I attended a funeral at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Renfrew. As the coffin was being placed in the hearse, numerous cars, motorcycles and several large dump trucks passed. Since the church is located at the corner of Lochiel St. and Lisgar St., there is a three way stop. Consequently, all vehicles were either braking or accelerating. It was tremendously noisy. Although they stopped at the stop sign, NOT ONE MOTORIST STOPPED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT A FUNERAL WAS IN PROGRESS. A few slowed down slightly, as though the
thought had crossed their mind but nevertheless, they did not stop. If only one driver had been brave enough to stop, the example would have been set. Others would also have stopped, if not because of the example, then because their way was impeded by the stopped vehicle. Perhaps you might argue that these motorists were unaware of what was happening. If that is the case they had better relinquish their driver's licenses because they are both deaf and blind. The toll bells were ringing, the hearse, the funeral directors, the priests and attendants were on the roadway behind the hearse, family members and at least a hundred mourners were on the sidewalk and the church steps. There was no shortage of audible and visible clues that a funeral was in progress. It seems to me, that the reason no one stopped was because society has become so disrespectful, so self centered, so desensitized to the anguish of others that we are no longer a caring, compassionate peo-
ple. In my opinion, a truly sad commentary on society! Incidentally, at that funeral, there was a whole class of seven year old children in attendance. What a wonderful opportunity was lost that day to teach these young children respect for the living and the dead. Obviously, the bells were not tolling for you that day but someday they will. On that day, I hope that citizens who happen to witness your funeral will stop to acknowledge your death, show some respect for the dead and consideration and compassion for your family and friends as they mourn your demise. Please, the next time you witness a funeral in progress, consider taking a few minutes to be a caring compassionate and sensitive person.

FOR SOME BIRDS CLIFFS ARE HIGH RISE APARTMENTS MICHAEL RUNTZ TAKES A LOOK AT NESTING HABITS MICHAEL RUNTZ Column
Birds are masters at making nests safe for raising their young. Baltimore Orioles hang their sock-like nests from the extreme tips of slender branches, locations too precarious for even a squirrel to venture. Great Blue Herons construct their bulky stick nests atop dead trees in beaver ponds, their castles complete with a moat. Other birds render their nests invisible with camouflage. Using spider silk, Rubythroated Hummingbirds stick tree lichens on the outside of their teaspoon-sized structures, making them just another lichen cluster decorating the tree. Eastern Phoebes employ a two-part strategy. They coat their nests with green moss, something that grows in abundance in their preferred nesting locations. While today these vociferous flycatchers utilize porch lights and bridge supports as nest sites, before those structures appeared on the scene phoebes stuck their nests in crevices near the bottom of cliffs where overhanging rocks kept them dry. A cliff ledge is just about the
Michael Runtz photo This Peregrine Falcon is part of a pair currently nesting on a cliff in Algonquin Park. safest place for a bird to place its eggs. While many weasels and red squirrels scramble across tree branches with ease, no predator dares scale the smooth, vertical surface of a cliff. However, suitable ledges are not a common component of cliffs. Likely for that reason, only a handful of birds use them. Phoebes are one. Barn swallows, sadly vanishing from the landscape, are another. Common ravens build massive stick nests on larger and higher ledges. And recently I encountered another species that also nests in high places. We were canoeing in Algonquin Park beside an ageless wall
of Canadian Shield when familiar shrieks echoed across the water. They were the cries of a peregrine falcon! Excitedly, we paddled through the lichen-encrusted reflections of the rock wall, eyes trained upward for any sign of a nest. Unlike ravens, peregrines create little more than a scrape atop a ledge, the sparse nest and its contents not visible from below. However, one clue is left as to their occupancy of a ledge; their excretions paint the rocks beneath it with whitewash. Before we spotted such a clue, a peregrine flew from the opposite side of the river, calling re-
peatedly as it rose higher in the air. When it neared the cliff, another peregrine flew out from its face. The first, now screaming incessantly, dropped an object from its talons. The other, now directly below it and also uttering piercing calls, gracefully flipped over, catching the gift - a robin-sized bird - with its feet. After righting itself it returned with its prize to its hidden perch on the cliff. What we witnessed was a male peregrine bringing food to its mate, likely still incubating eggs. Careful scrutiny of the rocks revealed two possible nest sites. At first opportunity we will return to ascertain the exact location. Along the bottom of the cliff we located several active phoebe nests. With falcons occupying the upper level of their high rise, those flycatchers better beware that when snatching insects over the water to feed to their young, they themselves might just become meals for the cliff's upper tenants! serves are found to cause accidents that leave death and longterm medical care in their wake, are those prescribing and selling these drugs responsible for the deaths? If the federal and provincial governments sold a substance that was found to be a contributing factor in accidents that result in death and long-term medical care, would the injured parties sue governments and all of the agents who sold the substance? If you have answered no to these questions, then hopefully
it would stand to reason that your answer would also be no, regarding fatalities and injuries involving alcohol, licensed and sold by our governments. Would you charge the Liquor Licensing Board of Ontario staff or the makers of the products, if a fatality happened after the purchase was made? I humbly ask you to consider these words and ask your elected representatives to create a law that sees each and everyone citizen accepting and admitting their own guilt. My parents and teachers taught me that it is
wrong to blame others for our own actions, regardless of our age or inexperience. Insurance companies need to find a better way to pay out their claims, rather than bringing innocent people into their fight. Canadians care for each other through many agencies funded by taxation and we are all legally required to carry no fault insurance, in case of accidents. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Shawville native Luke Murphy will release his fourth novel, Rock-A-ByeBaby, on June 16. The novel is a follow-up to his second novel, Kiss and Tell, released in 2015. The author played six years of professional hockey before retiring in 2006. He wrote a weekly sports column, "Overtime", for the Pontiac Equity, which was nominated for the 2007 Best Sports Page in Quebec, and won the award in 2009. Murphy currently resides in Shawville, Que. with his wife and three daughters. He is a teacher who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, and a Bachelor of Education (Magna Cum Laude). The Renfrew Mercury spoke with Murphy about his new book. Renfrew Mercury: What inspired you to delve into the mystery/thriller genre? Luke Murphy: I've always loved reading those types of books. Even as a kid, I grew up with the Hardy Boys, and as I got older, I started reading James Patterson, Greg Iles and Harlan Coben, some of the great suspense thriller writers of my time. So I drew on those experiences when writing these books. RM: How did you come up with your main character, Charlene Taylor? LM: Back in 2000, I had just been benched from hockey for the season due to an eye injury. My wife, who was my girlfriend at the time, was attending college in Montreal. We were talking back and forth and she mentioned she had to write this short story for English class. She asked if I could help her plot it out and come up with the characters and stuff. So we worked
Luke Murphy photo Shawville author Luke Murphy releases his fourth novel, Rock-A-Bye-Baby, on June 16. on that together, and I had so much fun with it that once we were done with that, I took one of the characters we created, who became Charlene Taylor, and started writing a novel, which turned into Kiss and Tell. RM: What can readers expect from Rock-A-ByeBaby? LM: It's a thrilling read with lots of suspense. It has a different kind of plot, it's a kidnapping. I'm sure people have read lots of kidnapping books, but what I do with it here is a little different. Without giving anything away, readers will be very surprised, especially anyone who has read Kiss and Tell; with the way that book ended, there's a twist at the start of Rock-A-Bye-Baby that they won't be able to predict. I think readers who enjoyed Kiss and Tell will really enjoy this new one. RM: Will people need to read your previous novels before reading Rock-A-Bye-
Baby? LM: No, readers can go into my new book without having prior knowledge of my other three novels. I do make references to Charlene's past cases, though, so readers could go read Kiss and Tell, the other Charlene Taylor book, afterwards. RM: Would you ever try your hand at any other genres in the future? LM: I've had teachers and parents ask me to write something for kids or young adults, so I sat down one day to try and write a kids book, and I found it to be hard. I'm so used to writing for adults that it's difficult to switch. So if I were to try and write a novel in a different genre, like horror or romance, I'd have to read some books to get used to that idea and to know what is selling and what readers want. Like I said, my whole life I have been reading mysteries and thrillers and suspense books. So that's really what I know.

So far, eligible Renfrew Hydro customers have received products ranging from home energy-saving kits, home energy audits, appliance upgrades to Energy Star appliances, to heat pumps and insulation,"
There'll be a new face at Renfrew Hydro this July. "The board of directors is pleased to announce that Lance Jefferies will be joining Renfrew Hydro Inc. (RHI) on July 15," says a recent press release. "Lance is a seasoned leader who brings a wealth of experience from his career in the utility industry." Jefferies holds a master's of business administration from the University of Ottawa and a master's certificate in energy sector leadership from York University. "Prior to joining RHI, he has held progressively responsible positions with Ottawa Hydro, including his first role as a power line maintainer up to his most current role as chief electricity distribution officer," says the press release. "I am very excited to welcome Lance to our team," says Bruce

Lance Jefferies Rozycki, chair of the board. "As an experienced leader, he will support the board and staff in bringing continued long-term value to our shareholder, customers and the community through the delivery of efficient, safe and reliable service." said Bruce Rozycki, chair of Renfrew Hydro's board of directors. "Customers shouldn't assume that the program doesn't apply to them. This program was set up to help ease the hydro bills of customers who don't qualify for lowincome conservation programs," said Rozycki. "It doesn't matter if you own or rent, as long as your name is on the hydro bill and you haven't already qualified for other energy assistance programs such as the Low-Income Support Program, the Ontario Electricity Support Program, and the Home Assistance Program." Level 1 support consists of a home energy-savings kit valued at up to $300. Items include: LED bulbs, a hand-held shower head, kitchen aerator, bathroom aerator, smart power bar, block heat timer, plug timer, refrigeratorfreezer thermometer, room thermometer, window heat-shrink films, switch/outlet sealing gaskets, and an LED nightlight. Customers eligible for Level 2 receive a home energy-savings kit, a home energy audit and may have their appliances upgraded,
depending on the energy efficiency of their existing appliances. Level 3 is for eligible customers who heat with electricity. They receive the home energy-savings kit, a home energy audit and may receive products including insulation, weather-stripping, Energy Star heat pumps, and upgraded appliances. It all starts by calling the AffordAbility Fund at 1-855-494FUND or visiting the website at affordabilityfund.org, to find out if you qualify. The Affordability Fund Trust (AFT) will call you back and ask some basic questions. Have your hydro bill handy and 2018 your 2018 income tax. Based on that conversation, the Affordability Fund determines your eligibility. Up until recently, Renfrew Hydro conducted the home energy audits and delivered or installed the energy-efficient products. That work has been contracted to Greenbrain Inc., which delivers the AFT program for 27 other utilities. Level 1 recipients receive the home energy savings kit. If you qualify for Level 2 and/or Level 3, you will be contacted by Greenbrain to set up a free in-home energy audit and, based on eligibility and income validation, organize the delivery or installation of free energy-saving products.

OPP ON THE LOOKOUT FOR POSITIVE YOUTH Youth in Renfrew and Arnprior demonstrating positive actions, positive behaviour and showing acts of kindness toward others may earn themselves some well-deserved acknowledgment this summer. The OPP is proud to be continuing its partnership with Mac's Convenience Stores across Ontario again this year for Operation Freeze 2019. OPP officers will be on the lookout in their communities; and when they
"catch" a youth participating in an act of kindness, the youth will receive a "thank you" in the form of a free coupon, or "positive ticket," for a cool Froster drink. A youth may receive a positive ticket from an officer for a number of positive behaviours: • doing a good deed; • participating in community activities; • demonstrating community pride e.g. picking up trash;
• deterring crime or observing school crossing rules; or • as an "icebreaker" to establish a rapport with kids in their patrol area. "Mac's is excited to once again partner with the OPP on this important initiative that encourages kids across Ontario to make positive decisions within their communities" said Sean Sportun, manager, loss prevention and security for Mac's in Central Canada.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

GEDDES, Grant 1947-2019 It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Grant Geddes on June 12, 2019 at the age of 72. Beloved husband to Eileen Geddes (Cardiff) of 48 years. Devoted and dearly loved father of Jay (Fiona), Rhonda (David) Summers and Bow (Jill). Adored grandfather of his seven grandsons, Grant and Jordan Summers, Noah and Cooper Geddes and Rory, Grady and Crosby Geddes, who he loved with all his heart. Predeceased by his parents Ralph and Jessie Geddes. Survived by his sister Ruth (Lindsay) Stewart, his brother Dean (Marlene) Geddes, and in-laws Marie and Billy Smith and Glen and Marie Cardiff. He will also be missed by nieces, nephews, and friends. Grant was a hardworking, extremely generous, fiercely strong, humble, supportive, loyal and respected man. He was a reserved and private person but he really enjoyed having one-on-one conversations with people; many were surprised by his wisdom, vast knowledge on various topics, and his witty disposition. He often surprised people with his wise cracks and oneliners! He enjoyed telling jokes and recounting stories to his family and friends, often leaving everyone in stitches! He truly left a positive impression on people; he was remarkable. Grant’s passions were vast. He loved going on long drives and travelling with Eileen, boating on Hurds Lake, trying new restaurants, and he was an avid reader who kept up on current events. He particularly loved working outside in the yard at home on his hill, down at the creek and in the meadow. He died doing what he loved, which is consoling as he didn’t suffer, but painful as it was so sudden and far too early for him to be taken from us. Above all, Grant was an avid supporter of his seven grandsons. He loved being a part of their lives and watching them grow up; he couldn’t wait to see them to hear all their updates! He travelled around the Ottawa Valley cheering them on in their many sports, providing encouragment and praise. He particularly enjoyed following their hockey, going to various arenas around Renfrew County, in Ottawa and beyond, which made for a busy winter given all 7 grandsons played. His grandsons will miss not seeing grandpa in the stands cheering them on, and many of the fans will miss his commentating in the stands as well! Respecting Grant’s wishes, there will be no visitation, only a private cremation. We will forever miss him and he will always stay close in our hearts.

CALABOGIE SUMMER MARKET WOOL DAY JUNE 22 June 22 is Wool Day at the Calabogie Summer Market, to raise awareness of the environmental benefits of using wool. As concern grows for the negative long-term effects on the environment of synthetic fabrics made from fossil fuels, wool is once again getting the respect and appreciation it deserves. The market welcomes many vendors, with
various types of wool products, from all over the Ottawa Valley. There will be demonstrations of shearing, spinning, weaving and felting, to show how wool goes from sheep to finished product. At the Kids Corner at 11 a.m., kids will learn how to spin wool into yarn on a homemade drop spindle. There will be about 50
vendors showcasing their art, baking, produce, cheeses and meats from local farms. The market is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Calabogie Community Centre, 574 Mill St., Calabogie. For more information on this event, please see www.calabogiemarket.ca, find us on Facebook or email to info@calabogiemarket.ca.
