Timber! Watch out for the Saw Tech Log Expo at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre June 23 to 25. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady spoke of the impact of the conference on June 13 saying it is set to bring 10,000 people into town and feature 250 exhibitors. The exhibit spaces will be filled with all sorts of forestry equipment and products from as far away as New Zealand. A large proportion of the exhibitors are from Renfrew County. Among the most popular features of the show are the live demos - the sawdust will be flying with the portable sawmills. Over 20 exhibitors will be demonstrating their equipment at their booths. In fact one of the exhibitors needed to secure air space to demonstrate the use of a drone in its forestry application. For a full schedule visit www. sawtechlogexpo.com .

Horton OPP Const. Tina Hunt recognized at Renfrew Town Council TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Renfrew council has recognized a community hero. Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police Const. Tina Hunt and Horton resident, received a town scroll from Coun. Tom Sidney, who sits on the police services board for the town. “I wanted to take a moment and recognize Const. Tina Hunt, especially in 2017, police officers don’t get the recognition they deserve and they kind of get brought up in the media in a different way,” said Sidney on June 13. “Fortunately enough for the Town of Renfrew OPP we have many outstanding police officers but one has been highlighted for outstanding work both on the job and in the community that she works and lives in.” Sidney congratulated and praised Hunt’s outstanding community work including her interactions with local youth, her fundraising skills and facilitating in the schools for the Drug Awareness, Resistance Education program. Sidney read the scroll, which states: “Const. Tina Hunt is hereby named to recognize your many years of outstanding service advocating, fundraising and volunteering for all of us in your community and for promoting cultural diversity.”
In May, Hunt along with six other first responders, received the Public Hero award in Ottawa for their dedication, altruism, and community involvement. Round Lake Robert Norris from the Round Lake Property Owners Association asked Renfrew Council to support a letter for a comprehensive review of the Bonnechere Water management plan to help prevent flooding. Norris updated council on the history of the request to the provincial government dating back to the spring of 2011. Norris called the flooding this spring the worst flooding they have experienced. He also noted that Renfrew Power Generation (RPG), which is owned by the town, provides them with summer water levels that they value. As well as support for the letter for the review he asked that RPG to give them the necessary tools to prevent future flooding. “Also direct RPG to work with all stakeholders to be a good neighbour and corporate citizens and to be part of the flooding solution and not part of the problem,” said Norris. Mayor Don Eady said they do not get into the technical aspects of RPG Tiffany Lepack/Metroland and the request for support would be Const. dents,” said Eady. “The area is one big happy family.” Parking The Town of Renfrew awarded a parking needs study to WSP Canada Inc. costing $27,780. It will be funding from the 2017 budget, which has allocated $70,000 for downtown rehabilitation. Director of Development and Works for the town Mike Asselin updated the council on the proposed plans. “It seems like a lot of money but when you are making decisions on purchasing property that could be $100,000 … there is rational in having the background to support future council decisions, said Asselin. Coun. Tom Sidney supported the study. “It’s a very intensive parking study that Renfrew needs,” said Sidney. Coun. Andrew Evans was the only councillor who voted against the study asked why it could not be completed internally. Asselin responded by saying staff does not have expertise for a comprehensive review. “Given enough time we could do it but it would consume hundreds of hours,” said Asselin. Coun. Mike Coulas, who sits on the development and works committee, said there was a lot of debate at that level. “It’s a difficult decision to make but money well spent,” said Coulas.

New electric vehicle charger turns on in downtown Renfrew TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Just charge it has taken on a whole new meaning in downtown Renfrew. On June 14, a charging station for electric and hybrid vehicles was officially plugged in for the first time on the west side of Metro on 83 Raglan St. S. It’s a joint partnership with Metro, Renton Patterson, Yemen Electric, Briscoe Property Management and the Renfrew Industrial Commission (RIC). Dave Lemkay, executive director of the RIC, calls the charger a paradigm shift currently happening on how people approach electric vehicles. There is also a charger at Hydro One on Innovation Drive but the location of the new charger is key. “This was selected mainly to allow visitors to town to come and take advantage of the charger but at the same time be able to go shopping or have lunch or visit the library or spend a couple of hours in the business section of the town,” said Lemkay. “So, this location is critical and it was the reason we talked to Charles Briscoe, who owns the building and Ray Vidler as the Metro store owner to take advantage of this parking space.” Lemkay says the project has been on the go for a couple of years as they tried to locate the perfect location, initially thought to be Low Square.
All eyes are on Renton Patterson, centre as he plugs his electric car into the newly installed charger at Renfrew Metro on June 14: Jim Miller, Renfrew Downtown BIA; Amy Rule, Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce; Ron Brazeau, Renfrew Industrial Commission; Ray Vidler Renfrew Metro; James Briscoe, Briscoe Property Management and Dave Lemkay, executive director of RIC.
“I said either this end of town or the other because people can walk downtown,” said Patterson. The Sun Country Charger was donated by Patterson, and it cost approximately $2,000 to install which was covered by Yemens Electric and RIC. “This is not a high capacity charger compared to other chargers,” admitted Lemkay. “It’s a good start and a stepping-stone. We are on a cusp of a change … and the electric vehicle is Tiffany Lepack/Metroland one of mitigating factors dealing with climate change and we are trying to be ahead of the curve and its conducive to business downtown.” Jim Miller, chair of the Downtown Business 566 Cataraqui Woods Dr, Kingston ON K7P 2Y5 Improvement Area, thought it was a nice initiative for the downtown. “I think it shows the innovation of the down$15 SHUTTLE TO LAC LEAMY $10 SHUTTLE TO RIDEAU town businesses, bringing customer service into TUESDAY’S & SATURDAY’S MON, WED & FRI the 21st century,” said Miller. “I think it’s important that we offer such services, we have gas $10+$10 Pembroke West End Mall: Depart 8:00am in points stations why not have a charging station.” Pembroke East End Mall: Depart 8:15am “I think it’s great, definitely a step forward in Cobden Main St. and Crawford St.: Depart 8:40am bringing new people into Renfrew,” added Amy Rule, Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce Renfrew Info Booth Across from Walmart: Depart 9:00am president. Renfrew principal retires after more than three decades Connie Dick, principal of St. Thomas the Apostle (STA) Catholic Elementary School for the past eight years, will retire June 30. She has spent her entire career with the RCCDSB, beginning in 1984 as a teacher at St. John XXIII and at St. Joseph’s in Arnprior for a total of four years. She then moved on to teach at St. James Catholic School in Eganville for one year before shifting to an administrative role as viceprincipal at Holy Name School in Pembroke, followed by principal of St. Mary’s in Wilno, St. Andrew’s in Killaloe, Our Lady of Fatima in Renfrew and finally STA.
“I have worked throughout the RCCDSB in eight school communities, and we have always worked, prayed, and played together. We have, together, ‘sustained safe schools characterized by warmth, hospitality, good humour and joy,’ and I have been blessed to be part of many faithfilled communities,” said Dick. Dave Howard, board chair, thanked Dick for her long-standing dedication to the board as well as to her students and staff. “Connie has been an exemplary leader of Catholic education with a commitment to improved academic performance and student success. She has been a mentor to her coworkers
through the New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP). She is a community builder, always working to bring together the home, school, and parish communities. We will miss her enthusiasm.” She shared her favourite aspects of the job. “I love school, especially being with the children, in the classrooms and on the schoolyard. Our schools, homes and parishes, together, are making a difference in the lives of our children and I
hope to continue to help with this in the future,” said Dick. She also commented on the support provided by the board and administration over the years. “I have been blessed to be part of this community for almost 33 years. The board is secondto-none in the province, and is known not only for its high academic standards, but for its sense of community, co-operation and positive relationships,” she said.

Enjoy some delicious treats and support the Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) at the same time at a special event coming up June 30. What is it about this bake sale that we all love so much? Is it the individual delicious strawberry shortcakes? Is it the melt-in-your-mouth pies and cookies, or is it because everything is made by men and women who love to bake?
Probably all this, plus much more. Stop by Scott & Sons Hardware, 150 Raglan St. S. in Renfrew on Friday, June 30 and pick up a yummy treat or two for your Canada Day celebrations. Cancer survivors honoured at Relay

Two Renfrew cancer survivors were honoured at the Arnprior and District High School’s (ADHS) Relay for Life on June 8. The event raised more than $14,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society and more than 200 students heard passionate speeches from two Renfrew residents. St. Joseph’s Catholic High School also helped with Arnprior’s Relay for Life as they held a special buy-out during an ADHS versus St. Joe’s soccer game, raising $1,500 for the cause. St. Joe’s has supported the relay before but this year there was a special meaning as ADHS teacher Laura Carter, from Renfrew, was recently diagnosed with cancer. Her husband, Mark Valliquette, is also a teacher at St. Joe’s high school. The students enjoyed a number of fun activities during the day but there was also a message of survival. Carter spoke on what it is like when one suffers a loss, and noted that her mother also passed away as a result of cancer. “One of my close friends, who also lost her mom to cancer, took me in and explained how we’re in our own special ‘club.’ Here’s the thing, however: it’s a club that no one wants to belong to!” said Carter. “That being said, I know there are others of you, who like me, have lost someone very special and important. Suddenly that club that no one wants to belong to is incredibly bonding.” She said the relay was a chance to gather support. “For me, each one of you is a source of comfort. In going through this experience and meeting other cancer patients, I know I’m one of the lucky ones,” said Carter. “My cancer was caught and treated. The same cannot be said for my mom and so many other mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends, etc. As survivors, we will continue to stay strong, stay inspired and most importantly stay hopeful, as we make a difference in the fight against cancer.” At the opening ceremony Renfrew Collegiate Grade 7/8 teacher, Elizabeth Brumm, who proudly wore a t-shirt declaring ‘Yes, they are fake, the real ones tried to kill me,’ shared her cancer journey with the students. Brumm said it was an honour and a pleasure to walk in the survivor lap. Fighting back tears she told the students what happened after she was diagnosed: a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. “It wasn’t pretty, I was bald, couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep and tried to be positive,” said Brumm. “Cancer changes you. Apart from all the physical scars, there are emotional ones as well. You’re not the same person you used to be and that makes you realize how fragile life is.” However, she reminded them she was standing there today. “I am one of the lucky ones, I have survived,” said Brumm.

Driver donated electric car charger From page 3
The space itself will soon have green lines painted so drivers know specifically it is for green vehicles. “I think it’s obviously the convenience of people shopping here but it’s also something that people will talk about,” added Vidler. “You don’t see these things around every day so people might say have you seen the one at Metro?” “What comes first chargers or cars?” asks Patterson who also admits he will now be shopping at Metro when he comes to town. Patterson, from Pembroke, is no
stranger to electric vehicles. The former electrical engineer and Fellowes High School teacher taught his students how to convert vehicles to electric vehicles multiple times in the 1970s all named ThunderVolts. Although his current vehicle is not named a ThunderVolt, he admitted with a laugh, the Nissan Leaf 2012, was one of the first models on the market, with the only things needing to be replaced are the tires and wipers. Before he was able to purchase it, he had to have a charger installed at his home, now he plugs the car in once a week as it’s better to have to battery

drained a little bit before charging it. The car runs on a 24-kilowatt battery and when its fully charged it can travel 140 kilometres depending on the speed. Patterson spends his summers at Hurds Lake and often travels to Renfrew and says his motivation for having an electric car is twofold: it’s cheap and convenient. “I was a teacher so it was a real-life situation for kids to get involved with something new, I’m an environmentalist and don’t like greenhouse gases,” said Patterson. “It just makes sense.”

Benefits may be minimal The Ontario government’s recent announcement that the minimum wage and other related rates of pay would be increasing significantly in 2018 and 2019 generated an expected mix of responses. Some praised the proposal as a step in the right direction of the province’s working poor, while others slammed it for being a job killer and a desperate attempt to pull an election win out of the perceived jaws of an upcoming defeat. We can relate to those who are trying to make ends meet on the current minimums. That task must be even more challenging when dealing with larger households and in urban areas where the cost of living is higher than what we experience in the Renfrew County area. Trying to save for education or retirement is difficult if not impossible without taking on multiple jobs. And yet, it stands to reason that certain businesses will have little or no choice but to insist that consumers offset the increased labour costs
in order for those businesses to survive – and cutting into those wages gains for lower-income individuals as a result. If the choice is to reduce staff or close the business, the affected workers do not realize the benefit of higher rates. Fewer workers gainfully employed would presumably lead to higher social service costs. And it’s fair to ask about how some businesses that are already being asked to donate on a regular basis would be willing and able to continue their support of sports teams and community projects if they have to make adjustments to compensate for paying more in operating costs. We are conflicted by the potential benefits of moving in the direction of a guaranteed living wage being offset or cancelled out by higher prices and the possibility of there being fewer lower-level job options in the future. The bottom line is companies are in business to make money; they do not exist merely to employ people.
Music from the McDougall Mill Museum KEVIN MCSHEFFREY
Although I have visited the McDougall Mill Museum several times over the years, since becoming a member of the museum, I’ve really started to notice the many unique features of our collection. As a musician myself, I decided to have a closer look at our musical collection. I would consider the highlight to be a functioning player piano. It is one of the big attractions especially for the children who love to pump the pedals while the keys play themselves with such tunes as The Twist, You Are My Sunshine, and Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer. The collection contains 60-70 rolls (each roll has one song) with other oldtime hits such as Bye, Bye Blackbird, Yes We Have no Bananas, and several Irish Jigs and Christmas Carols. In addition, there are two pump organs. Each of these instruments is wonderfully ornate,
a testament to the fine craftsmanship of years gone by. Also on display are several radios dating back to the 1930s. Included in these are the Marconi and Philco brand radios, such as your grandparents might have listened to, following the exploits of The Shadow (who knows what evil lurks in the heart of man), Flash Gordon, or The Lone Ranger (Hi Ho Silver!). Then there are the ‘talking machines’, such as the Berliner Gramophone produced by Victor Talking Machine Co. Although creaky, it still plays the old 78 rpm records. Even older, is an Edison brand player that uses wax cylinders, with one dated at 1913, also playable. There is an interesting display of vinyl records featuring Ed Sullivan, Don Messer and the Islanders, and a sizable collection of older 78rpm record albums to browse through. The collection also has a concertina, an autoharp from the 1920s, harmonicas, and a trombone!

8 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 22, 2017
Aside from records, music players, and instruments, there are photos and posters highlighting the musical heritage of Renfrew. Renfrew had a group called the Renfrew Bijou Orchestra, which performed all over the Valley during the 1920s, including the O’Brien Opera House. There was also the Renfrew Citizen’s Band which performed around that same era. The last item that caught my eye, was an O’Brien Theatre poster. It proclaimed that its theatres in Renfrew, Pembroke, Arnprior, and Almonte were now “Equipped for Sound Productions.” Since motion pictures entered the talking age around 1930, it also proudly stated that you could now “See and hear your favourite actor on the screen.” This music collection is only one small part of the museum. There are so many other collections of artifacts, memorabilia, and local history to explore! Drop by this summer and check them out. Time for a swimming pool is now Shame on MP Gallant To the editor:
We moved to Renfrew in 1989, 28 years ago. At that time Ma-Te-Way was fairly new and we were told that a pool was about to be added to the facility. It was one of the reasons we decided to settle here. I was one of the difficult-to-attract health professionals and the hospital hired me from England to work as a physiotherapist at Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH). RVH still has trouble recruiting doctors and an aquatic centre would help in getting young families to settle here. Renfrew has flirted with a pool many times but I honestly believe our best chance is now. I can tell you in my professional opinion, nothing beats water as a therapeutic tool. I have treated people with arthritis, post surgery, brain injured, and back pain in warm water with great results. I also went with many young children from Renfrew with various disabilities to do therapy in the pool in Arnprior where they could move in the water so much better than on dry land but so much time was lost in getting there and back.
Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise as it has no impact on the joints, not to mention it could save a life – yours or someone else’s. To achieve both these aims, therapeutic exercise and aerobic exercise, we need two pools - a warmer one to help exercise and a cooler one to swim in. Both are possible under the plan put forward at the public meeting on May 29 and on the town’s website. It is completely affordable. Even if no other municipality helps out, and no fundraising is done the six per cent tax increase for my large home in Renfrew is $150 a year that’s only $12.50 a month or 40 cents a day. Think of the money raised in this community every year, it is in the millions, and just a portion of that would knock off quite a chunk of the cost of the pool. Exercise is
a huge health issue as is water safety unfortunately, so many children in Renfrew don’t learn to swim as there is no pool or beach within easy reach. I also wonder where the philanthropists are, such as people like O’Brien (movie theatre, opera house), Low (Low Square and Cenotaph), Plaunt (land for churches and schools), Mrs. D.W. Stewart (Rec. Centre) who all gave freely of their wealth to help make the town a better place. There are lots of ways to help pay for the pool but first we should just get going and build it. Please email or phone the town to tell them you support the aquatic centre. Make sure you ask for a warm exercise pool as well as a swimming pool. Do it today and we may be all swimming in the next decade!
Shame on Cheryl Gallant! Her sole vote against the Paris climate accord in Parliament was not only wasted but also wrong for the constituents she represents. I don’t often write to my MP (I don’t get a response) but again, I have sent her an email expressing my disappointment at her 1 vote against 277 votes, in the House of Commons, supporting the Paris Agreement climate change motion.
This number includes MPs from her own Conservative party, including the new party leader Andrew Scheer. I believe the people of the Ottawa Valley are concerned about their environment and the welfare of future generations. In addition, we cannot ignore what is happening in the rest of the world. It is time that Cheryl gets over herself and her own agenda and starts properly representing the people that live in Renfrew/Nipissing/ Pembroke. Jane de Snaijer

Not just a ‘woman’s issue’

ERIN NORRIS
Most would agree that domestic abuse is an issue that affects family, friends and the community at large. It is also sometimes mistakenly labelled as a “woman’s issue,” a private matter. Certainly we are well aware that child abuse carries a legal responsibility, “a duty to report.” Yet there still seems to be hesitation to recognize that intimate partner violence affects everyone, in particular women. Stats Canada (20l4) has reported that 68 per cent of women who experience abuse turn to family and friends for support, and 26 per cent turn to their co-workers. Also it is reported that 70 per cent of women who are being abused do not report it to the police. Sadly, research clearly shows the trauma that women who have experienced intimate partner violence has similar effects to PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). The impact is often long term and include “feelings of detachment, being constantly on guard, nightmares, and avoidance behaviours: (Stats Canada 2014). These effects are not surprising given that 25 per cent of victims experience the most severe types of abuse which include sexual assault, choking, and threats with a weapon. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please contact our voluntary agency, Bernadette McCann House, 24-7, at 613-732-3131 or 1-800-267-4930.

The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 22, 2017 9
The reality show that never ends Today, television offers plenty of “reality” shows. From backwoods hillbillies in swampland to teams surviving challenges on remote islands, the topics are varied and wide-ranging. But in truth there is only one bonafide reality show and it requires no pay-for-view fees and can be seen in any local woods, meadow, pond, river, marsh, or backyard, and at any time of day. That reality show is, of course, nature. At any given moment a diversity of performances can be viewed, their genres ranging from romance to drama and even horror. Currently, exciting dramas are on view, with life and death battles galore. Many of the battles involve insects on the attack and plants on the defensive. In particular, caterpillars of moths and butterflies are busy devouring plants as they prepare for their next stage: the transformation into adulthood. One species of caterpillar is currently present in really large numbers. Eastern tent caterpillars, those well-known but seldom-loved caterpillars that create tentlike webs in trees, have had a good spring. Many trees that bore their webs have been defoliated, and the caterpillars have been forced to leave in search of new restaurants. If they got lucky, they found suitable substitutes in the leaves of rose bushes or apple trees. Eastern tent caterpillar moths mate in late summer, and lay their eggs in neat bundles on
stems of cherry trees. These overwinter and in spring the tiny caterpillars that emerge collectively work to spin a silk web in the fork of their host tree. They leave the web to feed on leaves, and this takes place usually at night. After returning to the web to spend the day inside it, they decorate its silk strands with myriad droppings. As the caterpillars grow, they enlarge the web, keeping a number of entrances open. In most years, the caterpillars are found in moderate numbers, and few trees become defoliated. But in some years, such as this one, they can be abundant, and their effects on trees can be prevalent. In many cases, new leaves grow back and the trees survive. But if a tree experiences a second defoliation, it might not survive. So can anything stop these caterpillars from killing all of the choke cherry trees and their relatives? Well, in nature when any resource occurs in great abundance, something soon takes advantage of it. Soon after snowshoe hares in the boreal forest become abundant, lynx experience an exponential growth in their population and they and other predators, which also become more plentiful, soon starting knocking hare numbers back. Eastern tent caterpillars are hairy and most birds do not eat hairy caterpillars. But one local species does, and it is taking ad-

Black-billed cuckoos not only eat tent caterpillars, they also can eat part of their protective tent webbing. They do so because their crop can remove the hair and silk, and these items get coughed out, not unlike a cat releasing a hairball. And cuckoos are currently being seen all

funds will have and the Foundation’s appreciation. “The St. Joseph’s school community is definitely making a difference and helping to ensure quality health care for the future. We truly appreciate all the time and effort that went into this very generous gift.”
St. Joseph’s High School chooses RVH Two years ago, after seeing the huge need at RVH and the amazing care it provides to all of us as community members, it became crystal clear that St. Joseph’s High School could help out says Brennan Trainor, Principal. In the early days of the major construction and redevelopment project, Trainor and vice-principal Tony Jacyno were invited to tour RVH by Dave Gallagher, a member of the I Choose RVH campaign team. “From this starting point, we had several school information sessions and school assemblies, in which we educated
students on the importance of the RVH and we created our school plan to spend two years raising money for the RVH. At one assembly, we were fortunate to have a father of one of our staff members tell his personal story of being a kidney patient at the RVH. This was particularly moving for our school community,” recounts Trainor. Two years later, after countless fundraising activities, events, dances, yard sales, etc., a handful of staff and students, made a surprise presentation of $26,100 dollars at the RVH Foundation’s annual Charity Golf Classic tournament on June 9 at the Renfrew Golf Club.
The team from St. Joseph’s High School hit an ace at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation’s Charity Golf Classic on June 9 with their donation of $26,100 raised over the past two years for the I Choose RVH campaign. Staff and students present the cheque to the Barb Desilets, RVHF Executive Director.

The County of Renfrew assumes no responsibility for paint damage claims from motorists who cross wet paint lines. Facts:
• • • •
Line painting is done primarily during daylight hours only Most County Roads and some local municipal roads are painted each year It takes about 2 minutes for traffic paint to dry Wet traffic paint on the road may splatter on your vehicle if you cross the centerline before the paint has dried
If you encounter a line painting crew on the road: Don’t: • Pass, unless the warning signs direct you to do so • Cross the centerline
Do: • • • •
Slow down and stay well behind the truck Obey the warning signs on the truck Be patient Unless otherwise directed, wait for the truck to pull over before passing
If your vehicle is splattered with paint:
• Go to a car wash as soon as possible • If the paint does not wash off, spray the affected area with WD-40 and allow it to dry for 2 hours, then rewash the vehicle • If the paint remains, consider submitting a claim to your insurer

HINKING ABOUT MAKING A MOVE?
I can help you! Call me today!
When you walk into Haven Salon in downtown Renfrew, it truly is a haven for all your hair-care needs. Co-owners Lorraine Vincent and Miranda Haines recently opened the new salon at 198 Raglan St South and describe their new salon. “Haven is your safe haven, it is your retreat,” said Vincent. “We love to come here and we hope our clients love to come here too.” Vincent has been a hairstylist and makeup artist for 12 years after studying at Versailles in Ottawa. Haines has been a stylist for three years after attending the Pembroke Beauty Academy. The two are longtime friends with Vincent growing up in Renfrew and Haines from Barry’s Bay. “This is the best business move for both of us to grow together,” said Vincent. “We have the perfect downtown and we are right in the core and we love it.” They are also both very excited about their new chic, industrial and vintage location “We knew going into this we wanted to keep the original heritage of the building and we
have kept the original floor and brought out the pipes,” said Vincent. Their goal is to adapt to their clients’ needs. “If you want country music, that is what we will turn on or if you just want peace and quiet, that’s what we will do,” said Vincent. “We want you to feel comfortable there.” “We offer an inviting atmosphere and hope our clients feel comfortable, always in our Haven,” added Haines. They offer a wide array of services including cuts, full advance colour, and styles for men, women, children, as well as facial waxing, makeup and a full line of products. For more information on Haven Salon call 343-361-0333. Both think beauty is more than just a hairstyle. “It’s all about inner beauty. As a hairstylist, we get tears because we have made them feel good about themselves,” said Vincent. “It’s not always about the beautiful hair, it’s about their inner beauty and how they feel about themselves.” Haines says her favourite thing about being a hairstylist is what she has with her clients. “I love making a connection with my clients,” said Haines. “It’s not always about hair, but the relationships we build.”

The Raise the Roof golf tournament on Friday, June 16 was another fun and fruitful event, raising about $56,000 for the roof at the outdoor rink in Calabogie. Above, Bill Graham tees off on hole three. The tournament at the Calabogie Highlands featured a very popular auction, the highlight of which was a signed Sidney Crosby photo that went for $10,500. Daryle Leclaire was the winner of the side-by-side.

Scavenger hunt with a hockey twist in downtown Renfrew June 23 and 24 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
They shoot, they score — but only if they find the right hockey cards hidden in downtown Renfrew. On Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the NHA/NHL Birthplace Museum and the Renfrew Business Improvement Area (BIA) are teaming up for a unique scavenger hunt. “It’s all about giving back to the community, that’s what this museum is all about, promoting tourism, our local history and binding our community together,” said Jim Miller, museum executive director. It all starts at the museum at 249 Raglan St. S. where participants will pick from one of four different hunts with directions to find different hockey cards located at downtown businesses. Once the form is completed they bring it back to the museum. “They start with a few hidden items right here at the museum and then venture out into the downtown core,” said Miller. “When they are done, they just bring the form back here and submit it with their contact information
for the draw.” The draw will take place on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both the BIA and the museum have put up $150 in prize money; first place will receive $150; second place will get $100 and third place will earn $50. “It all ties in with the Canada 150 theme,” said Miller. “It’s a good chance to see some local stores and their Canada 150 exhibits.” The hockey cards will be hidden at 12 local stores along Raglan Street. There is no cost to enter for the all ages event and anyone can enter into all four hunts. On June 29 the Canada 150 Street Hockey Game will be hosted by the NHA/NHL Birthplace Museum and the Town of Renfrew. All the local schools have been invited for a street hockey tournament starting at 9 a.m. with an official opening ceremony with the national anthem at 11 a.m. The event will feature mostly school-aged teams, but there are some time slots available to the public. Each Tiffany Lepack/Metroland player involved will receive a souvenir The NHA/NHL Birthplace Museum and the Renfrew BIA are hosting a puck with the Canada 150 logo and scavenger hunt on June 23 and 24; participants will have to hunt for the museum logo on it. “It’s a way to celebrate the fact hockey cards on display at local businesses.
that the NHA started here and that morphed into the NHL and it’s a way to bring the community together,” said Miller. “It’s for everybody to bring them together for Canada 150 and what hockey means to the Ottawa Valley.” They have received a grant from the Town of Renfrew for $1,675 for the event and town officials will also be refereeing the games. Raglan to Argyle streets will be closed for the event and there will be stands brought in for spectators. The Town of Renfrew with the support of the Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce and the NHA/NHL committee made the following proclamation on the history of the O’Brien family on June 10, 2002: “Renfrew, Ontario, Canada was the place where the Honourable M. J. O’Brien lived all of his adult life, and due to his initiative, influence, resources and the organizational skills of his son Ambrose, the National Hockey Association (1909-1917), later to become the National Hockey League (1917) was born.” For more information contact the museum: 613-433-2155 or online at nhanhl.ca.

Busy week for Dragonfly golfers BILL RAINBOTH Dragonfly Golf Links
Fifty years ago, John Lennon wrote the song “All you need is love.” Apparently, all golfers need is sun. Last week, Dragonfly put a wrap on the busiest week of June in her 20-year history. Highlights included four nights of league golf (without rain), and a visit from Michelle Cassista and her Paramedic Golf Day, and a Member Fun Day/Qualifier. This event had 48 golfers competing for fun, and the chance to represent Team Dragonfly on Interclub competitions starting in July. Great scores on this day included the “sibling rivalry” of Jesse and Justin Riopelle who both shot 2-under-par 70 to take low gross, (Jesse won the tiebreaker), and Chris Bacon winning low net. Women’s low net was won by Alix Bell, and Pat Lee had her best competitive round of her life to take low net. Closest to the pin was won by Tim Lemoyre Jr., and Richard Labrie on the men’s side, and Pam McFarlane and Linda Kidd were closest for the ladies. Monday Men’s League were all happy to get the chance to play, as more than half of the Mondays this year have been rained out. The happiest team on this night were the Bunker
Busters who edged Riopelle Painting by one stroke to claim victory. Closest to the pin were Dustin Howard on No. 5, and Russ Unsworth on No. 7. On Tuesday Beatty Pilgrim Construction won the tiebreaker with Valley Automation & Controls to take A flight. B flight champs were the team from RVH, who were three shots better than the next best team. Don Rouble was closest on to the pin on hole 5, and Dragonfly Player Assistant Chuck “Dustin” Johnston was closest on hole 7. Low rounds for the week came from Wednesday night where Brisco Plumbing and Cobus Homes both shot 66, with the latter winning the tiebreaker to take A Flight. Another tie needed to be broken in B flight with the Mountain Men coming out on top of Apollo Property Management. Closest to the pin winners were Jamie Cobus on No. 13, and Tom Hyland on No. 18. Ladies night just finished their round of golf on Thursday before heavy rain drove them in to the shelter of the clubhouse for a delicious meal and prizes. A flight champs were the Senioritas, the Birdie Bandits won B flight, and Underskilled & Over Par took C flight. Debra McFarlane was closest to the Pin on hole 7 and draw prize winners included Laurie Stroud, Danielle McGregor, Debbie Holmes and Shelly Riopelle-Cram.

Smashing success
On June 19 and 20 the Renfrew Police Services Board, Days Inn and Rocky Mountain House sponsored presentations in Renfrew schools by Sebastian Sauve, Shane Sabre and KC Spinelli, professional Wrestlers from Smash Wrestling. They spoke to the kids about chasing their dreams and anti-bullying. They will be back for a show on June 30 at the Horton Community Centre outdoor rink at 6 p.m. VIP tickets cost $10, which includes reserved seating and a picture in the ring or $5 advance regular ticket. Tickets at the door will be $10.

Champlain Senior Centre offers shuffleboard every Tuesday STAN MCCORMACK
Do your part to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary while ensuring your good health. Join the Champlain Seniors to engage in euchre or shuffleboard. Floor shuffleboard is competitive, healthy, challenging and good fun. Every Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Champlain Senior Centre, 164 Argyle St. in Renfrew, you will find shufflers from Renfrew and surrounding area competing on the courts. We invite you to read just a bit about floor shuffleboard to see if you would like to join in the weekly activity. Costs are minimal. Floor shuffleboard is a game that challenges the mind, more so than the body. The actual physical act of playing the game is relatively easy and gentle. An extremely light touch is required on the cue, which is light in weight. The discs glide down the court with speed
and ease. It is a game that anyone can play, from youngsters to seniors. The strategy of shuffleboard can be compared to curling and lawn bowling. It is not merely a matter of pushing the discs into the scoring area and hoping for a score. Creating hides, clearing the board, snuggling/freezing and scoring your hammer are all very exciting and challenging aspects of the game. Should you find the weekly activity fully satisfying, so much so that you want more, that too is possible. Each year Renfrew shufflers compete with other shufflers in the county and earn the opportunity to compete in Ontario Senior Games. Renfrew shufflers have a respected reputation in such competition. Why not drop into the Champlain Senior Centre and see for yourself the level of enjoyment taking place. We look forward to welcoming you. RGC hosts Sunshine Coach fundraiser KEVIN SEBULSKI Renfrew Golf Club
Thank you to Lesley Wright for organizing last week’s Sunshine Coach fundraiser in memory of Lee Sharpe. A great turnout of 50 people raised more than $2,000 for Lee’s favourite cause, the Ride the Bus campaign. Ride the Bus is raising funds to replace the accessible bus in the Sunshine Coach fleet. We hope this is the first of many years of this event. Coming up this Saturday is our 49th annual Links of Friendship golf tournament. Links of Friendship celebrates not only RGC’s long heritage, but also all of those golfers who have been members and supporters of RGC throughout our history. And on Sunday we have our mixed two-ball championship, sponsored by J.S. Wilson. The mixed two-ball is a championship that was on our calendar for years and we’re bringing it back in 2017, complete with a new trophy for the winning team. This Friday, RGC starts its home and home series with Smiths Falls, home of this past weekend’s LPGA winner Brooke Henderson. Our men travel to Smiths Falls while their ladies come to Renfrew. In July, our ladies will visit Smiths Falls and their men come here. It’s just another reason why it’s great to be a member at RGC. It was Ladies Rec who finished their two-week
cycle this past week. In A Flight, Sunlifers shot an incredible 111 their second week to win the flight by two over Captain’s Crew. Winning B Flight, and moving up to A Flight for at least the next two weeks, are the Happy Hookers with the Dependables hot on their trail. C Flight winner HighBallers are going to see what B Flight is like, along with second place Strokers. And in D Flight no more, Beside the Green and Classy Ladies tied with 289 over the last two weeks and move up to C Flight. Weekly winners on June 7 were Molly Mullen, Pam McFarlane and Simone Kemp and on June 14 Vi Rossy, Barbara Anderson, Pat Lee and Mary Etmanski won skill prizes. In our Thursday Men’s Day, Bill James was the big winner in A Flight with 21 par points on our front nine. Second was Tim O’Connor with Rob Warren third. In B Flight, Chris Graham and Phil Marcella tied with 20.5 points with Tim Lemoyre third. C Flight was a three-way tie between John Wilson and Lawrence Gallagher and Clem Simard and in Super Senior, Dave Cummings had the high score of the week with 24.5 to win the flight over Brian Francis and John David. And in our Tuesday Ladies’ Day, unfortunately all we have are the winners from June 13. Cheryl Campbell was victorious in A Flight, Vi Rossy won B Flight and Bev Savicky took C Flight.

The Debenham Brothers are releasing a new CD at the end of June and have a number of local concerts in the Ottawa Valley in the coming weeks. Above is the album cover for the new release.
Please, join Food Banks Canada and help feed your neighbours today
TENDER CALL
Ottawa Valley’s Debenham Brothers release new CD The long-awaited new Debenham Brothers CD launched at the end of June and the band is gearing up with a number of local tour dates. Jim, Bill and Dave Debenham grew up in Toronto, but their family moved to Cobden when they were teenagers. Music was always part of their family gatherings when they were young. In 1977 the brothers formed the bluegrass band High Strung. The band won several competitions, including second at the Carlisle Bluegrass Festival in the open talent contest featuring both amateurs and professionals. Today the trio plays a combination of bluegrass, country, folk, Irish and celtic. Over the years they’ve played numerous festivals, including the Havelock Jamboree, fairs in Shawville, Carp and Renfrew, and at the Douglas Tavern on St. Patrick’s Day. They also played several times on the Reach for the “Rainbow Telethon;” and sang a song on Wayne Ronstad’s “Christmas in the Valley” album. In 1990 the Debenham Brothers released their first album with 10 original songs. Half the album was recorded in Nashville and the rest in Clayton; it received airplay as far away as Europe and Australia. The first release off that “Forever” album went No. 1 in Saskatchewan, while the second release “Dreaming of You,” went No. 1 in Alberta. Over the next couple
of years the brothers were nominated for eight CCMA awards, including song of the year and group of the year. They also recorded an original tune called “Christmas Is Upon Us,” in conjunction with a Kingston radio station’s Christmas album. They continue to play regularly in Renfrew, Almonte and Cobden. In recent years the Debenham Brothers performed in the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame Award Show at Centrepointe Theatre. Last fall they debuted the title track “Summertime in the Country“ from their new CD. The new CD consists of 10 more original songs, including a few driving tunes like “Life Out On the Road” and “Luck Be With Me.” There’s also the ballads “Nothing Else Matters” and “The Locket.” The CD was recorded in Arnprior and will be available at the end of June. Local schools do their part to support annual Hike for Hospice event Local elementary schools were invited to participate in this year’s Hike for Hospice, a national event held in May. Our Lady of Fatima School, Admaston Public School and St. Thomas the Apostle school partnered with Hospice Renfrew in an initiative to work together to create a compassionate palliative care community in Renfrew County. Having children participate in a fun, healthy activity helped spread awareness and raise funds for their local Hospice. Hospice Volunteer Liz Mosco, a retired teacher, gave a presentation about what a hospice is and what is it like to live at Hospice Renfrew. The children had fun participating in a warm up dance session before heading outside for their school hike. The schools raised over $1,200 which will stay within our community, providing much needed financial support to operate our local Hospice. For more information about your school joining 2018 Hike for Hospice or to request a speaker please check out our new website : www.hospicerenfrew.ca

Electric storms much worse for Mother in Renfrew than New York I could sense Mother’s fear. She moved from the stove where she was working to take a quick glance out the window to the West Hill. I sat on the creton couch holding one of my favourite dolls, which helped the nervousness I felt because of Mother’s growing concern over what she saw beyond the river to the back reaches of the farm. Black clouds were coming closer, and thunder could be heard in the distance, like a heavy barrel being rolled across the kitchen floor. Even though it was the middle of the day, Mother lit two coal oil lamps and set them in the middle of the table. For some reason, she felt safer if the kitchen wasn’t so dark. There wasn’t much Mother feared. She could work among the livestock as well as someone born and raised on the farm, and often at night, when it was blistering hot, she would take a kitchen chair and sit outside on the back stoop, alone in the darkness. But an electric storm had her blood run cold. And one was coming, there was no doubt about it. She was sure it was just a matter of time until our old log house was struck by lightning and everything we owned would be burned to the ground, and unless we took extreme precautions, so would we. Fire and an electric storm, I knew, were the only real fears Mother had. And
sheer nonsense, sitting inside the house with our feet stuck into two pairs of rubber boots! If we could get our hands on a MARY COOK rubber ball, so much the better. And if the phone that day, the storm sweeping toward us had turned the sky black as pitch, rang off the wall, we were forbidden and by the time it hit the barnyard, the to go anywhere near it! And that day, rain was pelting down and you could our number rang two or three times, scarcely see beyond the pump. Father, and we just sat there and looked at it. of course, was in the barns, and there Now, the storm was raging. Mother he would stay. Not to escape the light- counted the seconds between the ning, but the rain. Father had no fear lightning flash and the clap of thunof a storm, even though we once lost der, which she said was a sure way of 11 cows when the big maple tree on the telling how close it was. At that young West Hill was struck by lightning. But age, I caught the fear of an electric that day was never far from Mother’s storm from Mother. Hiding under the mind whenever a storm hit. Those of covers in my bed was no solution, beus in the house had to sit on chairs cause it was vital that I be downstairs in the middle of the floor. No being in case we got hit. Of course, if a storm came in the near an outside wall or a window! It wasn’t unusual, if the storm seemed middle of the night, we were all orto be a real dilly, for Mother to hang dered out of our beds, and made to a blanket in each of the two kitchen sit in the middle of the kitchen until windows to shut out the storm, and it blew over. Father, of course, never she fully believed that by doing so, she moved a muscle, and slept through could actually keep out the lightning. the most raging storms as if they were She also thought if we had some- happening in some other country. But he would hear again from thing made of rubber in our hands, that too was a safeguard, and so there Mother how electric storms were sat my sister Audrey, who thought it much worse in Renfrew County than

they were in New York City. Living beside the high buildings, she said, shielded her from the fierceness, but out in the country there was nothing to stop the roar of the thunder or the cracking of lightning. The storm was over almost as soon as it came, and all I could hear was the distant rumbling of the thunder, as it headed away from Northcote. The lamps were blown out, the windows
opened to daylight, and Mother’s Rosary put back in her bedroom. We survived yet another raging electric storm in Northcote. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Bridge club to celebrate Canada’s 150 MIKE NAGRODSKI
Though a sunny day beckoned outside, 15 full tables of Renfrew Bridge Club players still turned out to play for the June 14 contest. The afternoon’s cards were predealt or STAC hands and as usual they were designed to be challenging to bid and play. While some hands had very similar results (Board 6 was played 13 times and had 11 successful slams), others had results where the final contracts were completely scattered and it was rare to find two results that were the same. Congratulations to the June 14 winners: North – South: 1: Ernie Berndt - Eric Brown
2: Bob Bouchard - Garry Irving 3: Dennis Brehm - Doug Gonu East – West: 1: Rick Duncan - Leanne Cheliak 2: Yolande Baillon - Bette Rowe 3: Sharon Phillips - Doe Acker On June 28, the Renfrew Bridge Club wants to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, by having 150 people play bridge. There will be two playing sessions available, morning and afternoon, with lunch included. There will separate sections for both contract and duplicate players and all skill levels are invited to come out for an enjoyable time. For additional information contact Ruth Grant at 432-8235 or rjgrant@ bell.net.

Vacation Bible School rides into Calvary Pentecostal July 7 to 9 TIFFANY LEPACK
tlepack@metroland.com
Calvary Pentecostal Church will soon be turned into a theme park, of sorts. Its annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) is set for Friday, July 7 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, July 8 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, July 9 at 10 a.m., and this year the theme is Sonworld Adventure Park. “What we are setting up is an adventure park, like a theme park,” said Pastor Peter Snow. “We can’t really create rides but we are making cut-outs of rides and decorating the church sanctuary like a theme park.” The adventures will include games, contests, music, the Zoo Crew, bouncy castles, and more. There will also be draws for bikes, Barbies, soccer/Nerf equipment, and other prizes. The aim is to create a real fair atmosphere with a special play on words: ‘Sonworld.’ “Son refers to the Son of God, Jesus, which is the biblical theme that underlines all of the songs, stories, and all of the activities that will be going on,” said Snow. “It’s a VBS, its bible learning that is fun.” Along with the fun, the children involved will also be learning along the way. “I think it’s a great opportunity for kids to learn values, which they can use not only in a church setting but at home, at school, and the rest of their lives,” said Snow. There is no charge for the camp, but organizers do encourage people to preregister to help with planning. “Unlike many other things, this has no cost involved — all of the food, activities, cotton candy, barbecue, all meals provided and everything is free,” said Snow. “We prefer people to preregister so we can order the food, but people can register up until the day of.” For more information on the VBS at Calvary Pentecostal Church, 56 Wrangler St., Renfrew, call 613-4326785. Please leave a message and they will get back to you.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
