Fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin – it will have it all. That’s right, it’s time to toe tap your way to the Johnston farm for the 22nd annualREGION Valley Bluegrass REGION Festival. The annual event runs from July 7 to 10 with numerous bands from across North America descending on the farm. The event is organized by four local couples: Dar-.CA .COM rell and Carole Mooney, Bob and Julie Johnston, Kevin and Shelly White and Arnold and Barb Dickson. Darrell Mooney says it’s a family-friendly event with traditional bluegrass music for everyone. “Bluegrass has been around for years and there is such a history to it,” he said. “The bottom line is it is great heritage music. All of these bands are top-notch bluegrass bands” Organizers estimate about 3,000 people will arrive in Renfrew and Horton this weekend. “I encourage the community and local businesses to welcome bluegrass fans because they come to town everyday. They are here and spend a lot of money in Renfrew,” said Mooney. He is also very appreciative of the hundreds of volunteers who help run the festival. SHERRY HAAIMA/METROLAND “Without the volunteers, the festival would not be. The volunteers do a lot of things before and after the festival.” He says he doesn’t have a favourite band. Siblings Rylee, Aubrey and Carson Giroux are among those who enjoyed Canada Day festivities at Ma-Te-Way Park in Renfrew. .CA

“I can’t pick one band over the others!” He says the Larry Stephenson Band, who are here all the way from Tennessee and perform on Saturday and Sunday, is one the crowd will enjoy. “People will really like to see them, they are really professional,” said Darrell. Providing some local content to the event is Concession 23 from right here in the Ottawa Valley. They hit the stage on Friday and Sunday. “People are surprised they are so good,” said Mooney. “They are so good, amazing and they work hard at what they do.” He speaks very highly of Traditionally Wound from Central/ Western Ontario who will entertain on Friday and Saturday. “They are one of the prides of Canada, they are fantastic. They have really developed their music and songs.” The Dick Smith/Mike O’Reilly Band is on for Saturday and Sunday and hail from Virginia and Canada. They are the only one who has played every year.” The annual music weekend is not a fundraiser, however the volunteer committee feels it is important to give back to the community where they live and work says a statement on its website. Since the festival started, more than $80,000 has been donated back into the community. This year, proceeds from the event will be shared with the Renfrew Victoria Hospital and Hospice Renfrew. “Everyone alive depends on our hospital. I don’t think you can pick a more important place to donate money to than the hospital,” said Mooney. “Now that we have the
hospice, how did we ever do without it? They are both community assets, for sure.” For the last few years money donated to the hospital has gone to the Healing Garden project. This year they will also be directing funds to that project. Tickets are available at the gate of the Johnston Farm (408 Castleford Rd., County Road 20) a weekend pass is $80, Friday $20, Saturday $35 and after 5 p.m. $20 and Sunday is $20. Renfrew Art Guild rolls out 2016 Art in the Park July 16-17 Sherry Haaima
Art in Park runs July 16 and 17 at Haramis Park, near the caboose, in Renfrew. Participating artists include, from left, Frank Harper, Fred Halliwell, Chris Mussett, Diana Wakely and Jack Stekelenburg. For more information visit www.renfrewartguild. com , email info@renfrewartguild.com or find ‘Renfrew Art in the Park’ on Facebook.
sherry.haaima@metroland.com
The Renfrew Art Guild is all set to host out the 2016 edition of Art in the Park. The event will run July 16-17 at Haramis Park in Renfrew and everyone is invited to come out and check out the various artists’ work, which will be on display and for sale. Guild members Diana Wakely and Chris Mussett were at Renfrew council June 28 to update council on event preparations. “It’s a great event, it brings people to town, we have wonderful artists,” said Wakely. The town has always been a great support for Art in the Park, she said. “This is our fifth year and it couldn’t have happened without the co-operation of the town and the recreation department,” said Wakely. “So we’re asking you to come along and join us - the public as well.” Not only is the event an art exhibition, there are several features that make it unique, explained Wakely. “We have a Graffiti Board, which is a board that is put up and everybody can paint as they wish on it,” said Wakely. “It’s been a lot of fun for a lot of people. Let your childhood come forth and just have some fun.” Admission is free and the event includes food vendors, kids zone, demonstrations and a kids zone. “We also have what we call Battle of the Canvas where all the artists who want to take part have 20 minutes to paint a painting and then it’s judged,” said Wakely. The challenge lies with the instructions – participants may be required to use three colours or incorporate a certain theme, said Wakely. “It’s a lot of fun and everybody enjoys it,” she said. Organizers hope the weather will co-operate. “It has been known from time to time as art in the oven,” said Wakely, alluding to the hot weather that often greets the event. “But we can’t do anything about the weather.” Art in the Park was the first event ever held in Haramis Park five years ago, Wakely told council. Coun. Tom Sidney said he attended the event last year and was impressed. “I wonder if you ever thought of doing a council art battle challenge,” he suggested. Participating artists include: Joe Federer, Kathryn Bossy, Kathryn Kasaboski, Lesley Barnes, Megan Hazen, Pat Harper, Peter Sidock, Steve Stott, Terry Cowan, the Verreglas Workshop, Tuscany Concrete By Design, Vera van Baaren, Victoria Slight and more. “That would be great,” said Wakely. “For the 150th I’m lining you up.” Art in the Park runs Saturday July 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Haramis Park near the caboose along O’Brien Road in Renfrew.

Horton explores sign issue Sherry Haaima

Horton Canada Day fun Cash Simons and his grandpa Blair McCanna get a close up look at a Horton fire truck during Canada Day festivities July 1 at the community centre. The event kicked off with breakfast and included a model train display and games for kids.
Cal Smith and Debbie Hurrell will be allowed to keep a billboard they installed on their property on Gillan Road in Horton Township but they may end up with a bill in the future. June 21, Mayor Robert Kingsbury noted something the Rural Mayors’ Forum of Eastern Ontario is exploring further - as part of Ontario Provincial Police billing, townships are charged a base rate for billboards. “They’re billing us a base rate of $193 per year for a sign,” he said. “Cal Smith and Debbie Hurrell installed a sign/billboard on their property at 1217 Gillan Road with the intention of renting out sign space,” explained planning committee chair Coun. Glen Campbell. “And council had previously requested the owners to apply for a zoning amendment to permit the commercial use in rural zones.” The owners had asked to meet with the committee to ask for a reconsideration of the request. The one property owner living adjacent to the sign provided a letter indicating she had no issues with the sign. The couple explained they did do their due diligence before erecting the sign last year. They consulted the township and were directed to contact Renfrew County because they’re on a county road. They were told the county has no jurisdiction outside of the road allowance so they went ahead and constructed the sign. “We called here and then were referred to the county in Pembroke and basically they told me to be 13 metres from the centre of the road and a metre off the edge of the property,” said Smith. “We went ahead and did that thinking full well we were ok in what we were doing until later on we got a letter from the bylaw officer. We didn’t want to cause any problems, we thought we were doing the right thing.” Hurrell added they wanted to add to the community and draw visitors and welcomed the township to possibly add their own sign to the billboard. “It’s tastefully done, it’s a nice sign,” said Deputy Mayor Bob Johnston, adding that he has no issues with the sign. Staff have learned that the Township of
Madawaska Valley has a bylaw that prohibits and regulates the erection of signs, billboards, poster panels and other advertising devices. Their bylaw sets up a permit system for a sign. The annual permit fee is $150 for a sign larger than 32 square feet. That township is a little bit upset with themselves, said Kingsbury, having learned that while they’re charging $150 annually per sign, they’re being billed $193. “We’re after the government to change the way they’re billing us for OPP costs,” said Kingsbury. Base rate for households is $193 per year. Properties with a granny flat are charged an additional $193 and the township is charged another $193 for billboards. “Your assessment won’t pay us that kind of money back to cover those costs,” said Kingsbury. Planning committee member Bob Lockwood addressed the issue. “I don’t mind the sign,” he said. “I do see the need to do something if we’re going to be charged $193 per sign per year. We’ve got to get some kind of income to cover that.” This particular case came about before the township’s knowledge of the issue, noted Lockwood. “At some point in the future Mr. Smith and Ms. Hurrell should expect to be paying some kind of a fee for having that sign there,” said Lockwood. Coun. Jamey Larone said he was initially the one to raise the issue about the sign. Among his concerns was that a neighbour has no say in the look or placement “If we’re going to let signs happen on a property and they’re not zoned property for it, there better be some criteria as to what we will allow to be put up,” said Larone. “What if all of a sudden that sign had have been done on a fencepost, wasn’t aesthetically pleasing,” he said. Larone said the township needs to at least establish some guidelines regarding signs, he said. The couple said if the township is being billed for the sign, they have no problem paying. The township will hold off on permitting any signs to be erected until they have more information.

Woman receives OPP investigate Greater Madawaska break-in lifetime ban on owning animals On June 20 Amanda Jennings of Renfrew was found guilty of six counts of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act and received a lifetime ban on owning animals. In October 2015, the Ontario SPCA launched an investigation after receiving information that animals in Jennings’ care were in distress. Two search warrants were executed at Jennings’ residence, and four dogs were removed from her care under certificate of a veterinarian. The court heard evidence that the animals were underweight, one was in need of immediate medical care, and all were subject to unacceptable conditions. Jennings was found guilty of: • causing four dogs to be in distress; • failing to provide adequate and appropriate medical attention; • failing to provide suitable and adequate food and water; • failing to provide sanitary conditions; • failing to provide care necessary for its general welfare; • failing to provide adequate ventilation. Jennings was ordered to pay fines of $6,000 plus costs, and banned from owning animals for the remainder of her life. She must submit to inspections from the Ontario SPCA to ensure that she is not in possession of, caring for, or living with animals. “There is no excuse when it comes to failing to care for your animals,” said Steve Toy, senior inspector, Ontario SPCA. “We are pleased to see the judicial system take animal welfare so seriously in this sentencing.”

Renfrew County Futures Development celebrates 30th anniversary Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
It was a celebration of helping entrepreneurs through business, exploration, start up, expansion and succession. That is how Darrel Ryan, board chair of Community Futures Development Corporation Renfrew County (CFDC), described the organization’s 30th anniversary. Ryan addressed a large group of well-wishers at the Horton Community Centre on June 28 as the organization marked the important milestone. “We will continue to be a catalyst in our region through community economic development, strategic planning and partnership building,” said Ryan. “These elements are essential to building healthy and strong rural communities.” CFDC was established in 1986 and is funded through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario; with the mandate to administer a community loan fund in support of small and medium-sized businesses. They also help businesses with training, coaching, access to expert resources and more. The CFDC are non-profit organizations with a volunteer board

of directors staffed with business professionals and they have 269 offices across the country. Over its 30 years they have authorized $278 million in loans. Ryan called the current and past board of directors a dedicated group and thanked everyone for their efforts over the years. John Yakabuski, MPP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, told the crowd it was an honour to help them celebrate what he called a wonderful occasion. “Community Futures has been that little push for a lot of businesses time and time again,” said Yakabuski. “We really do appreciate the work you do, without you a lot of people don’t know where to turn. You have made a difference.” Yakabuski also presented them with a certificate of accomplishment for their work over the years. Jennifer Murphy brought official greetings from Renfrew County on behalf of Warden Peter Emon and also gave Ryan a congratulatory certificate. “Congratulations (CFDC) on 30 years of service in our communities promoting entrepreneurship in the pursuit of economic growth of the Ottawa Valley,” said Murphy. “Programs such as the Entrepreneurs Tool Kit, delivered through
the county’s economic development office, provides a one-stop shop for business planning and tools to assist business start-ups. As a local business owner, I personally recognize how important a tool such as this can be when setting up a company.” During his remarks Ryan presented some impressive numbers on how powerful of an impact CFDC has had in Renfrew County. In 2016, the Conference Board of Canada completed a study of the Ontario CFDCs and their total economic impact. The formula used to calculate economic impact was that for every dollar invested, it increases the gross domestic product (GDP) by $4.50. “To highlight the successes of the Community Futures Loan Program in Renfrew County, we have disbursed 450 loans totalling over $24 million impacting the total GDP by $108 million,” said Ryan. “These loans have maintained and created 2,592 jobs since inception.” Renfrew Coun. Kate Windle also congratulated everyone for their success.“I have been so happy to have one name over the last 30 years to go to,” said Windle. “Thank you very much and keep it up!”

“The Best Thing That Ever Hit The Market” for GOUT … Get It Out!

Canada Day in Calabogie Much of the Calabogie Canada Day festivities got rained out this year. However, before the storm, the Greater Madawaska fire department hosted a fireman’s challenge. Firefighter Corey Moss, above, leads a young participant through the course. The village fireworks were also cancelled because of the burn ban.
Workers at Community Living ratify agreement Less than a week after reaching a tentative agreement, developmental services workers with Community Living Renfrew County South ratified their two-year collective agreement on June 27. Beginning on April 1, the agreement provides significant improvements to wages, benefits and working conditions for members, including: • a $1.20 -per-hour wage increase for all job classifications • 20 cents per hour retroactive pay for all employees for all hours worked from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016 • job security, seniority and layoff and recall language • a comprehensive grievance procedure • a comprehensive process for requests and approval of vacation time • a new “sunset clause” that removes letters placed on members’ files by the employer • movement through a wage grid that has been frozen since 2007 “We’re really happy with this agreement,” said bargaining team chair Derek Ouellette. “We needed to see wage increases across the board, as well as real job security, and we got it.” Ontario Public Service Employees Union president Warren (Smokey) Thomas was also pleased. “Workers deserve provisions like these. I’m happy to see our workers at Community Living Renfrew County South have ratified the agreement.” Local 472 members work in the towns of Renfrew and Arnprior, supporting people who have developmental disabilities. They have been OPSEU members since August 2014.
Gout is referred to as a recurrent attack of an acute inflammatory arthritis in the joints. The joints are usually red, very tender, hot and swollen. Gout often sets in in the feet or hands, but there are many other forms of gout able to appear throughout the body. It is caused by elevated uric acid level in the blood. The uric acid crystallizes and these crystals can deposit in your joints, tendons and the surrounding tissue. I see these uric acid crystals frequently, when patients seeks me out to have their blood analysed. Besides of course many other things we find in the blood, the uric acid crystals are very easily characterized due to their unique shape. As part of the Live Blood Analysis, I provide guidelines how to rid the body of these toxins in order to prevent conditions like gout to become chronic. But even more frequent, I am treating patients for another condition and as a side comment they’ll mention their gout attack and discomfort. So, it happened recently with an older lady I’ve been treating for a while. She started complaining of a swelling in her foot and the “damn” throbbing pain. “I can’t even wear any shoes!” she said annoyed. The gout had set in on her right foot, on top of the foot, underneath and in her big toe. I gave her some remedies and at her next visit she smiled and said in her raspy voice:“This gout stuff is great stuff. I even told my daughter about it.The swelling is down, the throbbing pain is gone and I am getting my shoes back on.” she smiled. “This is the best thing that ever hit the market!” she laughed. Suffering from GOUT?….Get It Out!

OPINION
Connected to your community
Rain, rain come our way The pockets of rain that hit this area on the weekend were welcome, although some Canada Day organizers and revelers might disagree. Mother Nature could have picked a more opportune time than prime time Canada Day to drop a dousing on us, but the rain is desperately needed. As we have been through one of the driest Junes on record, the rain received so far in July is only a splash compared to the drenching we need. River levels are down dramatically (10 per cent of normal in some small tributaries), gardens and lawns are dry, and wells are low. And if the long-range forecast is even close to being correct, things are not likely to improve anytime soon. Sun-lovers may rejoice, but the drought-like conditions can cause some serious difficulties, especially for those dependent on wells for water. It is already causing ill-feelings between rural neighbours. A local resident who has already suffered through one dry well period is urging the newspaper to remind people to be mindful that Environment Canada is predicting a drought this summer and to not hog water. “The experience of having no water is nothing I look forward to anytime soon,” she writes. She reports she has a neighbor who insists on running her sprinkler 24/7 even
during the hottest of days. “We need to consider being thoughtful in these times and conserving water in the heat is a good place to start,” she says. Here, here. She points out there are ways to save water without parching the homestead. She notes she has a large garden, but uses rain barrels for watering. That’s one of the recommendations being made by the Missisippi and Rideau Valley conservation authorities. With flows in these major rivers only 15 to 25 per cent of normal, the groups suggest people capture rain to water lawns and gardens and avoid using pressure washers to clean houses, driveways, decks and fences. They note that “significant rainfall” over a large portion of the watershed will be required to return the watershed to normal conditions. Folks in the Madawaska and Bonnechere river watersheds are more fortunate when it comes to river flows. But the water table can drop quickly and coupled with tinder dry forests, it could be a recipe for disaster this summer if people don’t adapt to the new reality. So enjoy the sunny days, and keep yourself hydrated, but keep in mind that wasting water in the summer of drought could have dire consequences for not only farmers and well-owners, but us all.
Property tax system unfair, discriminating To the editor:
After my letter to the editor was printed in the June 9 edition of the Renfrew Mercury regarding Horton Outrageous increases, I have received many requests to elaborate on this issue. So, that is what follows. Example: the property tax system is both unfair and discriminating. In our case, our neighbour pays approximately $2,500 per year in property taxes and we pay approximately $5,000 per year. We get the same services. If our neighbour saves the difference between our two tax amounts, in 20 years this neighbour would have approximately $60,000, which would include interest etc.

We would have zero because for 20 years we would have subsidized the neighbours taxes. Is this fair? Definitely not. Consider this: Your and/or your partner go to a grocery store, fill up your cart, and go to the check-out counter. The cashier looks you up and down and considers that you can afford to pay double what others pay so the cashier says “You will be charged double the price others are paying.” You would scream discrimination. That’s what the property tax system does and the council members seem to agree with this practice. What are they doing about it? Nothing! If you are a manager or a cashier at

the local stores, the next time you serve a council member or their partner, tell them they have to pay double what others are paying...see if they like it, after all, they believe in this practice. Why don’t our council members do something to change this ridiculous way of charging property taxes ? What do we pay them for ? Isn’t this the kind of thing we pay them for ? Why are they not fighting to level the playing field ? Again, another reason to kick them out of office.

I can’t imagine. You will never become whole again.” She hopes the song will raise money and also hopes it will bring healing to others. “Writing the song was therapeutic. It was a source of healing for me. I hope it is healing for anyone who hears it or anyone who has lost a child,” said Krieger. “I really believe this song will bring healing because music does that.” She calls this a unique fundraiser. “It will not just be one cheque. It will continually give back,” said Krieger. VE
Krieger recently went for a tour of Roger Neilson House, which opened in 2006 to deliver palliative care services with a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists and support staff. It is a ‘home away from home’ for children and their families and it offers a number of services such as end of life care, grief support and more. “It would be really nice to see the number of downloads go up because Roger Neilson House depends on fundraising and they do specific child care,” said Krieger. “They make families comfortable in an uncomfortable situation and I would like to send them a large donation.” Helen Yoxon, manager at Roger Neilson House, called Krieger a beautiful person and knows she

The lyrics are hauntingly beautiful. “A mama shouldn’t have to bury their baby...Daddies shouldn’t have such sorrow inside...Rest now those tired eyes, you’ve been through so much in so little time...Rest now this is not goodbye.” The lyrics describe the short life of Evelyn Furniss, daughter of Melanie and Jeff Furniss of Renfrew. Evelyn was born on July 27, 2015. In February she was admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) due to uncontrollable seizures. She had vision troubles and it was discovered her cerebellum had stopped growing and would never grow again. She passed away on May 19 in her parent’s arms. Singer songwriter Danah-Lee Krieger from Arnprior is Melanie’s cousin. She knew going to the wake for Evelyn would be sad but she said she was not prepared for how devastatingly heartbreaking it was. “It just doesn’t seem right for this to happen,” said Krieger. She could not bear to go to the funeral and while everyone was there she wrote Evelyn’s Song. “The words just came to me… mamas shouldn’t have to bury their babies,” said Krieger. “It came to me they were actually having to do this, they didn’t even get a full year with her.” The Furniss’ spent time at Roger Neilson House, a hospice on the grounds of CHEO. Krieger has released the song on all digital platforms for 99 cents with a portion of every song going to Roger Neilson House. Evelyn’s Song is an acoustic song with a few guitars, mandolins and she describes it as a folk song. She recorded it at Harbour Music, which has locations in both Fitzroy Harbour and Renfrew. This song was done in Renfrew and produced by David Campbell. Melanie and Jeff have heard the song and they are very touched by
composed it and is very proud of it,” said Yoxon. “It’s all about healing.” The song can be purchased on Google Play, iTunes, Spotify, AmazonMP3 and a preview can be heard by visiting www.facebook. com/danahleemusic

FCS celebrates successful year in Renfrew County AGM celebrates significant reduction of children in care NOTICE OF OPEN HOUSES AND PUBLIC MEETINGS FIVE YEAR COUNTY OF RENFREW OFFICIAL PLAN REVIEW (AMENDMENT #25) PURSUANT TO THE PLANNING ACT, TAKE NOTICE THAT THE COUNTY OF RENFREW WILL BE HOLDING OPEN HOUSES AND PUBLIC MEETINGS ON THE FIVE YEAR REVIEW OF THE COUNTY OF RENFREW OFFICIAL PLAN The County of Renfrew is updating its Official Plan. An official plan is a policy document that guides the physical growth, use of land and development of a community. The Ontario Planning Act requires an official plan to be reviewed and updated at five year intervals to ensure it meets the needs of the community, has regard to provincial interests (e.g., protecting ecological systems, conservation of mineral aggregate resources, appropriate locations of growth and development), and is consistent with the Provincial Policy Statement (PPS). The proposed updated Official Plan affects all lands within the County and therefore a location map is not provided. The five year review of the County of Renfrew Official Plan will eventually result in changes to the Official Plan by way of an amendment to the document (Official Plan Amendment No. 25 is the assigned number for this purpose). The County of Renfrew is responsible for preparing and adopting Official Plan Amendment No. 25 and the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) is responsible for approval of the amendment. A draft of the highlighted and strikethrough version of the proposed updated April 2016 Official Plan (including all map schedules) has been prepared for discussion purposes and is available on the County of Renfrew website at http://www.countyofrenfrew.on.ca/departments/development-and-property/planning-and-land-division/ official-plans-and-amendments/ A copy can also be viewed at the County of Renfrew Administration Building located at 9 International Drive in Pembroke, or at any local municipal office. To engage, inform and seek input from County residents on the proposed changes to the Official Plan, a series of six open houses and public meetings have been scheduled that will follow the format below: 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. (OPEN HOUSE) – County staff will be available to meet, speak, and answer questions one-on-one with residents. 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. (FORMAL PUBLIC MEETING) – The meeting will begin with a presentation by County Staff on the Official Plan and the proposed changes. After the presentation any persons may provide oral submissions regarding the proposed changes. (It is requested that oral submissions be no more than 5 minutes.) If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting, or make written submissions to the County of Renfrew before the proposed Official Plan amendment is adopted, the person or public body may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the Ontario Municipal Board unless, in the opinion of the Board, there are reasonable grounds to add the person or the public body as a party. Family and Children’s Services
The best place for a child is at home. And that is a key goal for Family and Children’s Services (FCS) of Renfrew County. At the agency’s annual general meeting June 29, FCS staff, board members, volunteers and members of the community celebrated a significant reduction in the number of children the agency has had in care since launching its strategic plan in 2013. “We made reducing the number of children in our care a key goal in our strategic plan,” said executive director Arijana Haramincic. “Our programs and staff initiatives have been focused on keeping Renfrew County children safely and happily in their homes. Since we made that commitment, the number of children in our care has gone from 245 to 212 and we are closing in on our target of less than 200.” The general meeting was also a chance to celebrate the agency’s work on all fronts. That included helping launch young people into higher education. This year, a total of 10 young people were presented a Millenni-
um Scholarship, to help outstanding students further their education in the field of their choice. This is the greatest number of students ever to receive the scholarship. Six years ago a single student benefitted from the scholarship. The recipients this year represent a tenfold increase in scholarship awards. HIGHLIGHTS
Other business at the meeting included the review of the annual report, a territory welcome from Chief Kirby Whiteduck from the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan, greetings from the County of Renfrew by Warden Peter Emon, and greetings from the agency’s funding partners with the Ontario government. Highlights of the evening were entertainment and presentations from youth and aboriginal drumming. Board chair Sue McCrae also paid tribute to board member Jerry Lavalley, who is retiring from the agency’s board of directors. GRAND ROUNDS 20th Annual Bluegrass Festival to help grow RVH gardens “A little bit of bluegrass is a powerful thing.” In Renfrew and surrounding area, bluegrass music is a very powerful force that has been making a real difference throughout our community. A portion of the proceeds from the annual Valley Bluegrass Festival held at Bob Johnston’s farm in Horton Township are once again being directed to our local hospital. “We continue to be extremely grateful to our friends on the Bluegrass committee,” comments Barb Desilets, RVH Foundation Director. “Over the last three years, funds have been directed to our beautiful outdoor Healing Garden at the front of the hospital. Since opening in May 2015, the comfort it provides to patients and families is immeasurable. We see individuals using the
area and now the new oncology looks onto the garden for patients receiving treatments.” This year, proceeds will go towards the second phase of the project—a beautiful indoor garden space on our second floor. The event started in 1995 and once the festival began to produce a profit in 1997, the organizers (a volunteer committee) made a decision to support local organizations— starting with RVH. Two decades later, the bluegrass festival has a large North American-wide following and a massive impact on the community. Talented musical acts lift spirits while incidentally improving local health care services—to the tune of more than of $90,000 for RVH. Donations in previous years have supported our dialysis department and capital equipment needs.
“The festival itself is all about the love of bluegrass music,” shares Darrell Mooney, one of the committee members who has been with the festival since it began. He reiterates that it’s not meant to be a fundraising activity, but the overwhelming success has provided them with an opportunity to bring two Healing Gardens to life at RVH. With most of the organizers born and raised in Renfrew, he says they are proud to continue their support. “It’s quite unique—we are the only hospital in Canada that we know of that has two gardens.”
Likewise, the atmosphere they have created at the festival is unique and Mooney says it’s all because of the people involved. He thanks all of the hard-working folks who help behind the scenes: “We couldn’t do any of it without our volunteers! They are simply the best in the world.” Be sure to take in the banjos, guitars and fiddles at this family-oriented festival. It runs July 7–10 at 408 Castleford Road, Renfrew. Passes can be purchased at the gates or for more details, visit valleybluegrass.ca.

Renfrew Collegiate Institute honours class of 2016 Tiffany Lepack

The 110th commencement at Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) was a first in the school’s history. It was the first time ever a graduating class started at RCI in Grade 7. Seventy-five students walked across the stage on June 24 to mark this momentous occasion in their lives. Principal Terry Hughes told the class this was a day to showcase their achievements with great pride. “By graduating from high school you have made a big step towards a successful life,” said Hughes. “Most of the world’s youth are envious of the education you have now completed. Today is all about you.” He acknowledged that from the day they were born everything was about them and they had someone looking after them. “I wonder what tomorrow will bring? Will tomorrow be all about you as well? Will your life centre around your needs and your wishes? Or will you dedicate yourself to improving the lives of others?” Hughes asked them. He reminded them that tomorrow there will be fewer people to guide them and tell them what to do. “You will be free to make more choices that affect you and those around you,” said Hughes. “The decisions you make will determine how you will be perceived by others. If you are giving, you will be seen to be generous. If you tell the truth, you will be considered to be honest. Your actions will dictate your character.”
He said their character tends to be altruistic as he referenced some of the many things they have done to give back the community; such as raising over $840,000 for Relay for Life, and trips to Tanzania and Kenya to help build schools. “I have been very proud to be your principal. And I am anxious to see you change the world for the better,” said Hughes. “Enjoy your new freedoms. You have earned them and you can be trusted to make wise decisions. For you are and always will be Raiders and you will carry on our tradition of excellence!” Sage Melville was honoured and humbled to be this year’s valedictorian, she told her fellow graduates they have seen a lot together. “Through all the changes and challenges that have been thrown at us over the years, we have persevered and rose above them to get to where we are right now; sitting in this stuffy gym for three hours so we can walk across the stage and receive a piece of paper,” said Melville. She said the night was about more than just receiving their high school diplomas. “(Today) we celebrate the closing of one chapter and the beginning of a new one,” said Melville. She recalled the challenges the students faced as the first class to be at RCI for six years. “During our time here at RCI, we have grown together and formed bonds between one another that will outlive our high school careers. No matter where we go after this, RCI will always be a part of who we are,” said Melville. “Once you’re a Raider, you’re always a Raider. These halls have
provided us with a sense of belonging and comfort over the past four years, and we’re about to lose all of that within a few short months.” Melville said they were losing something good in their lives: RCI. “But the next chapter of our lives will be even greater. We get to continue on to great new adventures, which will bring us new friends, new experiences, and new opportunities.” She challenged the students to put their phones down and make memories. “As you continue on your journey after high school, remember not to collect ‘things,’ but also memories...A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a memory is worth so much more. I know that I will always look back on my days of being a Raider and remember many special moments from my time here.” Melville told the graduates to remember where they have come from. “Renfrew and RCI will always be our home no matter where we go or what we do. As we set off on a new journey with little certainty of what it will turn into, we can always be certain that we have a place to come back to,” said Melville. “We have impacted this school in a positive way and our mark will be forever printed within these walls. RCI has become a part of who we are, and we will take that with us wherever we go. “No matter what path we choose, I know, that I for one, will always be excited to come home.” She finished her address by wishing her fellow grads good luck in their future endeavours.
“Our time at RCI has come and gone, but it is our time now to go out and begin shaping our dreams into reality,” said Melville. “So class of 2016, good luck wherever your next journey may take you, but remember this building, this school, this institution will always be your home and will always be the best there is.” ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMAS

St. Joseph’s Catholic High School celebrates 2016 graduates Sherry Haaima

St. Joseph’s Catholic High School celebrated its graduates in a ceremony on Friday, June 24. Graduates and their families joined staff at St. Francis Xavier Church for a mass and gathering before the convocation at the school in the evening. Following the procession was O Canada, led by retiring teacher Kevin McSheffrey and Krista St. Louis. Salutatorian Emily Helferty and Renfrew County Catholic District School Board trustee Anne Haley brought greetings. The rose ceremony, a St. Joe’s tradition of having graduates bring single roses to a family member or supporter in the audience, was once again a touching part of the graduation event. Valedictorian Keelin Dowdall has accepted a scholarship to study forensic science and biology at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ont. Dowdall told the audience that her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother all attended St. Joe’s. “I would like to take a moment to thank all the people who have supported and nurtured our faith throughout the years. Thank you to the staff of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School,” said Dowdall. “Whether you took part in music, sports teams, student council, the DR (Dominican Republic) Team, Europe trips and more, the staff of St. Joseph’s go out of their way to provide quality academics, amazing extracurricular experiences, and most importantly, have helped each one of us grow in our faith.” In her speech, she also paid tribute to her peers. “Although there have been many people throughout our lives such as teachers, friends, family, parents, and community members who have guided us and encouraged us along the way, it was you, fellow graduates, who have gotten yourselves here today. Your perseverance, dedication and hard work has brought you to this very moment-your high school graduation,” said Dowdall. For principal Brennan Trainor, the graduation was an especially proud moment, as his daughter Lindsay was among the graduates. 14 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, July 7, 2016
“All here tonight can certainly agree that you as graduates of St. Joseph’s High School, represent our collective best wishes. On your graduation night let me extend a heartfelt congratulations. We are so very proud of you,” said Trainor. “As your principal and your father let me say, we love you. Wherever you go and whatever you do we will always be a part of your success. May you always recognize where your happiness comes from and may your faith always guide your actions for the years to come.” Sarah Power and Quinn Solar closed the graduation event with a student farewell song. Ontario Scholarships were presented to students with an average of at least 80 per cent, including: Levi Huyer (97%), Lindsay Trainor (96.83%), Emily Helferty (96.67%), Simon Rowat (94.17%), Jacqueline Enright (92.33%), Nycholas Paquette (91.00%), Drew Coghlan (90.00%), Keelin Dowdall (89.83%), Lacy Narezney (89.00%), Austin Gougeon (88.16%), Jordan Vandersleen (88.00%), Minda Wood (88.00%), Emma Crozier (87.67%), Taylor Duncan (87.67%), Jocelyn Virgin (87.33%), Quinn Solar (86.83%), Alyssa McKee (86.17%), John Ryan (84.67%), Nicholas Wouda (84%), Alexander Woertink (83.17%), Sarah Malatesta (82%) and Jared Pallen (80.50%). St. Joe’s alumnus from Renfrew finishes college-curling career as MVP “We were able to get a little bit of revenge,” said Mann. Making it to the national final was a first for any team from Sault College. “We were in uncharted waters and felt a lot of pressure,” said Mann. “We were tied after five ends versus the Humber Hawkes, then we lost our focus the second half of the game.” They lost in the final 8-4. Overall in his college career he won two provincial championships

He’s a sweeping success. St. Joseph’s Catholic High School alumnus Matthew Mann recently graduated from Sault College from the public relations and event management program with a 4.0 GPA, which earned him the recognition as an academic AllCanadian. Mann said he had a lot of experience curling before college but it was still a challenge. “It was definitely tough to balance, you want to be competitive and you have to practice but you have to make sure you are doing well in school because that is what you are there for,” said Mann. “I was really happy to be named an academic All-Canadian, I never had over a 3.7 GPA before.” His success in the classroom carried over to the curling rink.
Mann graduated from St. Joe’s in 2008 and started to curl while in high school. In his final year he skipped the team and in his Grade 11 season they made it to the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association championship, finishing second. He says he learned a lot as a Jaguar. “I learned perseverance because we never were really able to break-

and one silver medal and came second and third at the national competition. “I’m really happy, I didn’t have any idea I would be playing on such a competitive team. “I am proud of what we accomplished,” said Mann.
ONTARIO FINALS
In the 2015/2016 season his team earned the Ontario College Athletics Association (OCAA) silver medal for men’s curling. The team had won provincials for two years in a row and Mann says it was a tough loss. “When we made the final we were definitely expecting to win but we did not come out with our best performance and the other team won.” They lost to the Fanshawe Falcons 5-0 after going undefeated in the roundrobin. The national championships for the Canadian College Athletics Association (CCAA) were hosted at Fanshawe and Mann’s team won the silver medal. They were able to beat the Falcons 8-2.

St. Joseph’s Catholic High School alumnus Matt Mann recently finished up a very successful curling career with Sault College, here he holds up one of his most recent awards for being named to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s curling championship second team all-star.
He also won a number of personal awards this year; he was named to the curling second team all-star for OCCAA. He won the most dedicated player for golf and was also the most valuable player (MVP) for curling. He was very happy to be named the MVP. “I was pretty excited, I would definitely trade it for a gold medal but it’s nice to be recognized,” said Mann. “It’s always good when the skip is the MVP because he is shooting the last two shots,” Mann added about the award.
through,” said Mann. “That made us more determined.” Mann hopes to make it to the provincial play-downs again this year. They made it last year and faced Olympic champion Brad Jacobs. “It’s nice because he is from here and gives us a lot of encouragement.” Mann gives a lot of credit and thanks to Renfrew coaches, including Andy Sklepowicz, Ian Scott and Paul Villard. Andy was the one who basically got me started in curling,” said Mann. “(Andy Sklepowicz) was really encouraging and he was one of those people who kept me in the game.” Mann also graduated from Laurentian University with a bachelor of arts in history. He graduated in June and is now looking for full time work in his field with hopes to continue curling in the future.

New Tee it Forward tees at Dragonfly ready for the weekend Bill Rainboth
Dragonfly General Manager
As many of you may know, Dragonfly Golf Links has a wide variety of tees that suit players of all skill levels. We have our Championship Blue Tees, which play 6,670 yards, and our new Tee it Forward tees that play 3,500 yards, not to mention four separate tee choices of yardages in between. Sod was recently laid on six ‘brand new’ tee decks on our Tee it Forward tees and I am happy to say that they will be open for play this coming weekend. These new tees are awesome, and blend into the existing layout as though they had been there since the inception of Dragonfly Golf Links. They are specifically intended to cater to golfers who do not hit the ball a long distance, but still want feel like they have a reasonable chance at making a par – or even better, a birdie! Tuesday night Men’s League resumed play on the front nine this week. Ray Flowers regained their early season swagger winning A Flight. Legere Industrial broke through for their first win of the season to take B Flight. The Music Men sang the praises of the playing format (three teams of two aggregate
score) with the lowest score of the night, and handily took C flight. Closest to the pin winners were Andrew Ritchie on hole five and Chad Gillan on hole seven. There was a tight race for A flight on Wednesday night with Apollo Property Management edging the perennial favorites from Renfrew Pizzeria. The Mountain Men reached their peak with the lowest score of the week to take B flight. Doug Brydges had his second closest to the pin title of the year on hole five, and Scott Campbell was the winner on hole seven. In Ladies League the Lost Balls have “found” their game with a season low net score of 28. Needless to say they won A division. Wood Duck and the Garden Lake Loonies tied for the lead in B division – Wood Duck won the coin toss to break the tie. Bev Clarke took dead aim at hole five as did Nancy Cameron on hole seven to win the closest to the pin competition. Save the date: The next Open Mike night is Monday July 11 at 7 p.m. The first one was a huge success, so get here early to reserve your spot on the stage, or your seat in the Dragonfly Lounge. Congrats to all this week’s golfers, and a belated Happy Canada Day!

of the day that we knew who would have the gold; who would have the silver, and who would have the bronze. John and Marjorie Watt of Calabogie overpowered their opposition, Bob Archambault and Ed Quesnelles of Barry’s Bay to take the gold; silver going to Bob and Ed. The real excitement was for the bronze medal. Pearl Smith and Joan Archambault were playing Jerry Cockwell of Renfrew and his partner Marlene Savage of Combermere. When the final frame began, Jerry and Marlene were down eight points. In shuffleboard this is not ‘the end of the world’ as Jerry and Marlene had ‘two hammers;’ that is they were shooting black, and black was shooting last. Unfortunately Marlene did not make her hammer, the first hammer. That doubled the pressure on Jerry because it meant, to win, he must score more than eight points. Jerry’s opponent left a seven on the board with her last disc. Jerry must now score with his last disc; and to the delight of the crowd, he did just that. Bronze medal goes to Jerry Cockwell and Marlene Savage. Congratulations to all of the participants, and a ‘Big Thank-You- to Virginia Lyon, Convener for the Floor Shuffleboard Competition.

It has been two exciting weeks for Renfrew Minor Soccer Club. Both our U12 boys and girls were away for a crossover in Pembroke. U12 Boys Quick Lane Urban Sport tied their first game and won their second. U12 Boys Century 21 won their first game and lost their second. Both teams then had a win during regular season play only to face off against each other with Century 21 taking the win over the other Renfrew team. U14 Boys had a week off with school trips but came back both with victories against rival teams. Renfrew U14 Boys M&R Feeds defeated Pembroke #1 Score 4-1. U14 Boys Deslaurier Custom Cabinets were away and brought home the win from Petawawa. U14 Girls Urban Ford had a win at home against Deep River 2-1. U16 Girls JDF Kitchens had the two weeks off. They are still undefeated in season play. U16 Boys Renfrew Pizzaria tied Pembroke at home with a score of 1-1. U19 Boys Mack MacKenzie Motors had another win at home 3-0 against Deep River. The boys are having an exceptional season and are still undefeated.

Your expressions of kindness were genuinely appreciated during this difficult time. The family would like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest appreciation to Andre Pilon of Pilon Family Funeral Home and his staff for the thoughtfulness presented to us and the kindness we have been given during our time of bereavement. We thank you greatly for your help and support during this sad time. We would also like to give our thanks to Andrew Smith and Jessica Lesway for speaking at Dad’s memorial service. In my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me here, you are my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you. From the bottom of my heart. To succor me in my necessity (Make request). There are none who can withstand your power. Oh Mary conceived without sin, Pray for us who have recourse to thee (three times). Holy Mary, I place this Prayer in your hands (three times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days then you must publish and it will be LEWIS – In loving memory of our Dear Dad, granted to you. LP
Father-in-law, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa, Jack Lewis, who passed away on July 9, 2007. We will take this special moment to turn our thoughts to dad, thank him for the home he gave, for the things we had. We think about the fleeting years, too quickly gone for good, It seems like only yesterday, we would go back if we could. A time when Dad was there, always strong when things went wrong. He held our lives together; he strived so hard, he worked so hard and kept the family name. He taught us that hard work pays off and you reap what you sow. Our lives have been beautiful because he taught us how to give. In his firm and steadfast way, he taught us how to live. Dad, we love you and miss you always, Hilda (Jim), Keith (Linda), Norm (Sue), Ann (Bob), Leonard (Jean), Brenda (Sam), Randy (Marjorie), all your grandchildren and great- grandchildren Ken & Patricia & family

At our final June board meeting, the Renfrew County District School Board budget was finalized and approved for the 2016-17 year (pending Ministry of Education approval). The board’s total budgeted expenditures have increased $2.8 million to $128,542,345, which reflects a two per cent increase from last year. The board’s funding is driven by enrolment and it is projected that enrolment will be down about one per cent. A variety of cuts have brought down the final deficit from $1.2 million to $388,960. Included in the budget are savings from: the relocation of Sherwood Public School to Madawaska Valley District High School building; the closure of Westmeath and Madawaska Valley District public schools; the downsizing of one full-time position in director’s office; the reduction of two adult teacher positions in continuing education; the reduction of one elementary student success teacher; a reduction in the curriculum budget by 10 per cent; a reduction in negotiations budget; and a reduction in health and safety and administration budgets. We will continue to struggle with our 4,000 empty student spaces. These spaces come with a cost and no funding from the province. A further review of pupil accommodation across the county as well as efficiencies throughout the system will be required in the upcoming years. GRADUATIONS

HELP WANTED
Congratulations to all of the graduates completing high school, intermediate school, adult education school, Young Parents as well as Grade 6 sendoffs. The third week of June was a very busy time in the Renfrew area for celebrations of many types of scholastic successes. I was lucky enough to attend most of the grads in the Renfrew area public board schools and was most impressed with the caliber and enthusiasm of the students that were moving on to their next adventure. Thank you to all of the teachers, principals and vice principals, parents and grandparents who were so instrumental in making sure that these young people are engaged and excited about their education. Wishing each of you a very safe and happy summer holiday time. Student trustee, Connor Webster was unable to attend but did provide his report. In late April, a student summit was held with representatives from each high school in the county. Part of the day was spent on planning a board-wide mental health awareness initiative while the rest of the day was spent on reviewing candidates who were running for RCDSB’s first ever co-student trustee. Five candidates ran for this opportunity and voting took place with the winner being Nic Edge from Arnprior District High School. In early June, RCDSB hosted the Renfrew County Youth and Educator’s Forum on Inclusion at the Algonquin College, Pembroke Campus. Approximately 100 students from seven high schools heard a panel of LGBTQ+ former students, attended sessions on a variety of topics including: transgender identity, feminism, two spirit peoples, using correct pronouns, and addressing LGBTQ+ student learning in the classroom. The event was very successful in raising awareness about the need for greater inclusion and acceptance of all individuals.
Turmoil was a symptom of special visitor’s arrival The house was in a turmoil again. The whole place was upside down. Mother was in a bad humour, ordering us around, Emerson said like a drill sergeant! Even Father, who hardly ever got flustered, was all keyed up. All because Father’s sister, Aunt Lizzie of the hand-me-down boxes from Regina, was coming for her annual visit. She always came in the hottest month of the year, to make sure the old homestead was still standing. Aunt Lizzie didn’t think Mother was good farm-wife material, coming from New York and all. Mother was out to prove her wrong! Of course, Audrey and I had to give up our bed and sleep on the narrow creton couch in the kitchen. That meant the bedroom, which was really the large upstairs hall, had to be scrubbed within an inch of its life. Audrey had to stand on a chair,

and using the broom, sweep the ceiling, which was only whitewashed over tar paper. This was to make sure no flakes would fall on Aunt Lizzie’s face when she was in bed, as they often did for Audrey and me. The feather mattresses, tickings and pillows had been thrown over the back fence and pounded with the broom within an inch of their lives. Audrey said we wouldn’t be going to that much trouble if the Queen of England was coming! The kitchen, which was always spotless to begin with, was as clean as a whistle, and Mother, just to prove she knew a little more about being a farm wife than she was given credit for, had the bake ta-
ble loaded down with sticky buns, homemade bread, freshly made pickles, raspberry preserves, and a basket full of newly picked tomatoes and cucumbers. Aunt Lizzie rarely gave us notice of when she was coming, and more than once, we would get a call from the station in Renfrew that she had arrived. At least this time, a letter had arrived a week before telling us when she would be coming. Of course, we five children would love to go into Renfrew to meet the train, but that would mean taking the flat bottomed wagon with the one seat, pulled by the team of horses. Aunt Lizzie wouldn’t like being paraded through her hometown on a flat bottomed wagon, hauled by a team of work horses. So Father and Mother would take the two-seater buggy. We kids would stay at home. We were in our next-to-Sunday best clothes too.
The five of us had our noses pressed to the kitchen window when we saw the buggy coming down the lane, and there sat Aunt Lizzie, white dress, huge red leghorn hat and gloves to her elbow. When she pressed me to her chest, I could smell Lily of the Valley perfume. Her suitcases were brought in and taken right upstairs, and I couldn’t take my eyes off the big leather satchel she carried, because inside I knew would be gifts for all of us. My present was the last to come out of the bag. I had never seen anything like it. It was a book, about the size of a scrap book, and the cover was made of push-out paper dolls, and inside were the clothes they could wear, all made of paper, and she had even brought me a little pair of snub nosed scissors. I got right to it at the kitchen table. Each dress, when cut out, had little tabs beyond the body, and
they, when folded over, were what held the paper clothes on the little cardboard dolls. I was sure even bad Marguirite had never laid eyes on anything so exciting! I didn’t care about all the work we had to go to, to get ready for Aunt Lizzie’s visit. I didn’t care that she wasn’t our favourite visitor to come to the farm at Northcote. I was too young to think beyond the wonderful gifts she would bring all the way from Regina. Imagine! Little paper dolls and a wardrobe of paper clothes to keep me entertained for hours ahead! That Aunt Lizzie sure knew how to bring joy to a young girl’s heart! Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books?
