You’re invited to celebrate Calabogie’s 100th anniversary This year marks our Calabogie Generating Station’s 100th anniversary, and we’re celebrating by inviting our neighbours to tour the station on Saturday, July 29, 1 to 5 p.m. A shuttle bus service will pick up visitors at Barnet Park (5179 Calabogie Road) for transport to the station. Space is limited. We’re proud to be part of the Greater Madawaska community, and look forward to generating clean, renewable hydroelectricity for many years to come. For more information, please visit opg.com/eastern

Near the pond on the beautiful Johnston Farm that hosts the bluegrass festival is Payton Cavanagh and her mom Amanda, the latter of whom has attended all 23 festivals. Her parents Kevin and Shelly White are among the main organizers. 2 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, July 20, 2017

Hospice Renfrew is building its staff thanks to the support of the United Way of Renfrew County (UW). Earlier this spring UW announced that nine charities would receive over $198,000 to fund health and social services for 2017-18. Hospice Renfrew officials received their cheque from the UW on July 5 for $15,000 to create the new resident and family support counsellor position. Tracey Cummings started in the new position June 26. “Hospice Renfrew is very pleased to have received funding from the United Way to create the new position,” said Judy Cobus, manager volunteer and community development services at Hospice Renfrew. “We are so fortunate to have Tracey Cummings as a resource to our residents and their families during what can be a challenging time in their lives. “We also offer enhanced grief and bereavement support for families in our care. “We hope to be able to receive ongoing sustainable funding for this position to become permanent. It is our vision to be able to offer support to those in our community going forward.” Patricia Lafreniere, executive director with Renfrew County United Way explains that they fund programs and services that align with priority goals, which are set through community assessment. The priorities include: youth, child poverty, seniors, transportation, medical services (health), and safe affordable housing. These strategic priorities arose from a series of public consultations held throughout Renfrew County. “For the first time in history our region has more residents over the age of 55 than under the age of 15, which means the need for services supporting seniors issues is on the rise. With this comes the need to support those dealing with loss and crisis, whether it is the loss of a loved one or the loss of one’s own independence,” said Lafreniere in an email statement on the announcement. “Renfrew County United Way runs a fundraising campaign each year to fund programs such as the one at Hospice Renfrew and without these dollars many would not receive the help to move past some of life’s hurdles.” Cummings recently completed her degree in human relations and spirituality at St. Paul University in Ottawa and has a background in social work. For the last four years she was the regional manager for the ALS Society in Ottawa, where she worked on front line support and with families in their homes. “This is a really nice fit to bring it all together,” said Cummins who resides in Fitzroy Harbour. “Spirituality is very important for me and I am comfortable to have those end-of-life conversations with people.” While with the ALS Society part of her region was Renfrew County and she says she feels very familiar with this area. She also referred a former client to Hospice Renfrew and visited it before; she speaks very highly of it. “This is about life, music, laughter, baking and supporting people who live here at the end of their life, it’s a very nice place,” said Cummings. “It seems to be a very good place, it’s very homey and nice.” Lafreniere encourages the public to please donate to Renfrew County United Way at renfrewcountyunitedway.ca or contact the office in Pembroke at 613-735-0436.

Monday, July 31st to Thursday, August 3rd 8:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M. Flushing is part of a routine maintenance program that is necessary to maintain the integrity of the water system. The hydrant will be opened to discharge water and pressure tests will be performed. This procedure ensures that all hydrants and valves are working properly and any problem areas are identified. It also flushes and cleans the mains and helps to maintain chlorine residual in the drinking water. NOTE: During this process the homeowner should refrain from running their washing machine or using a dishwasher. You may notice brownish sediment in the water. To clear this common problem, let a COLD WATER tap run (suggested taps: outside hose, bathtub or laundry tub) for a short period of time until clear water returns. Please DO NOT use your hot water until you have clean water again. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Golden Age Activity Centre hosts powwow in Renfrew on July 22 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Renfrew’s Golden Age Activity Centre is celebrating Canada 150 by hosting a powwow on July 22 at O’Brien Park at 2 p.m. The event is made possible by an Ontario 150 grant for community celebration programs. “It’s a new experience for seniors and the community,” said Fay O’Reilly, admin. programmer at the Golden Age Activity Centre. In her grant application, O’Reilly explained

the celebration explores Ontario’s proud history and the people, places, and events that helped to shape it. They will explain the history and purpose of the powwow ceremony and to understand First Nations culture and beliefs. It will be a ceremony of celebration by the members of the Algonquins Bear Nation Drum and Dance Group. They will have five drummers, five dancers, and one speaker. “It’s a powwow and they will explain the dif-

ferent dances,” said O’Reilly. “This is a cultural event and the reason we thought of this was for Canada’s 150.” There is no admission for the event and everyone is welcome. “It’s open to everyone and for our senior population we want to give them the opportunity

to experience this cultural event,” said O’Reilly. “We wanted our seniors to have an opportunity to celebrate with their family at an event they may not otherwise attend.” There is free but limited parking on-site, as well as the Family Fries food truck. For more information, contact the centre: 613-431-8289.

Several water-related deaths have already occurred this season and emergency officials remind the public to keep safety top of mind. Tragic and avoidable fatalities, caused by drowning, occur across Canada every year, say the Ontario Provincial Police. It is especially important for adults to keep an eye on their young children, whether they are playing on the beach, the backyard pool, or in a bathtub. Small children can drown in only a few centimetres of water. Police remind the public that even older children or strong adult swimmers can find themselves in distress when swimming or wading in an area with a strong current or in a weeded area. It’s always best to know your waters, swim with a buddy and consider wearing a lifejacket. Alcohol consumption is another factor that

contributes to fatalities in the water, both for swimmers and boaters. If boating this summer, the OPP would like to encourage the public to follow these safety tips: • Always wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) • Ensure the PFD fits snug and securely • Use common sense and operate any vessel responsibly • Operate your watercraft at safe speeds at all times, especially in crowded areas • Be courteous of others using the water and obey all boating rules •Be cautious of swimmers and other marine operators, and always have a spotter for waterskiers and tube riders • Stay alert and keep your eyes on the water. • Avoid alcohol- alcohol and watercrafts don’t mix If you suspect that someone is operating a boat while impaired, call 9-1-1. For information on boating safety check www.boatingsafety.gc.ca.

Applause for MP Cheryl Gallant for standing up for personal beliefs To the editor:

For two weeks in a row RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant has been roasted because of her beliefs. I am on her side regarding climate change. If you open your eyes, read and listen to others on this subject you may see how this Paris Accord on climate change is possibly a hoax in order to redistribute wealth around the world. When the Liberals signed on to the Paris Accord they did not have any requirements to meet the objectives set on reducing CO2 gasses. They only had to agree on sending money to underdeveloped countries. So much for helping the environment. I have been called a climate change denier. If you try to engage in con-

versation about climate change you are told it is a closed subject and let us move on to fix the problem. Since when has any science been a closed subject never to be challenged? I am surprised that only 97 per cent of scientists have said that climate change is real. It should have been 100 per cent. Climate is changing, always has and always will. If asked the question “is man’s influence on climate so severe that it will cause the world to self destruct in 100 years?” you may find that scientist may not be as agreeable. Now let me be clear, I believe that the climate is changing, and will always be changing. However I do not believe that it is solely caused by man. We do contribute to climate change;

however it is only a small piece of the puzzle. The effect of the sun has a far greater influence. Since the dawn of time this world has had climate change. How many ice ages have there been? Did you know that at one time our country was a tropical forest? Man could not have had any effect on these changes. Twenty plus years ago a career politician (not a scientist) by the name of Al Gore shocked the world into believing in global warming. According to him the polar caps would be gone today, the oceans would have risen by several feet and the polar bears would be extinct. What became of these predictions? After 18 years of stable temperatures he changed the subject to climate change, and the money started

votes. Yes Cheryl had had a few gaffs in her 8 plus years as a member of parliament. She has been elected with a huge majority all these years. To a lot of politicians votes are more important than integrity. On a one on one private conversation with politicians of both sides, I doubt that there would be anywhere close to a 99.9 per cent consensus on climate change. I applaud Cheryl for her stance on climate change. It is nice to have a politician stand up for personal beliefs instead of trying to get the next vote. Best of luck Cheryl in 2019. Pool decision should be made with heads not hearts: reader To the editor:

There seems to be a rush towards a second ice surface and a new pool without careful examination. I remember an extensive review was done a few years ago and at that time it was viewed as too expensive. In fact an outside pool was looked at and that fell through due to unforeseen high costs. We have this new kick at an old can. Yes it would be nice to have all of this but do people really know the costs involved coming to their property taxes. I suspect not. First to hit is the transfer of costs due to the MPAC decision on commercial property taxes. The mayor back in March of this year stated that this shortfall would be placed on residents. This may be a hike in property taxes or cuts in services. We do not know how much we will face. This will be an ongoing surcharge. Next the proposed construction guesstimates. No one really knows the final costs. The practice has been to underestimate the cost of a project and overestimate its benefits. One can see that with our water/sewage treatment facility. We were told we could save money by reduction consumption. When people stopped watering their lawns and used rain barrels for plant and gardens, what happened? Both usage fees and base rates went up and there were no savings. We have reduced our consumption. We now use only two-thirds of the water prior to this expansion. Our bills have not reflected that. So I am very sceptical of these reported numbers. Added to these costs are operational costs that have not been identified. Previously, numbers as high as $400,000 per year were quoted. A consultant used by the town basically stated that a pool is a money loser. We see this in Smiths Falls attempt to resurrect their

community pool. It lasted a short time before its neighbours did not chip in to help. As for the proposal, the Renfrew Recreation Centre needs to be retrofitted for accessibility and parking. Yes it may need more ramps and other concerns but this can be done. As for parking, this is a town bylaw that the council can easily provide a variance to. That centre has been with limited parking for decades. Now it’s an insurmountable problem that can only be fixed by knocking down buildings for parking space. If so what are you going to do about the library? Knock down the surrounding buildings for it? Next what are you going to do with that building if it is vacated? Is it another empty building in town? We have several. As for the proposed Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre having space for the hockey museum, this seems like a nice fit. The townspeople will have to pay for it. Question becomes is there a cheaper alternative like having it at in the town hall where the OPP once resided. That space is empty and not in use. Could it not be used for that? It is still on the main street accessible to all visitors who go down main street. Now as for the two retail spaces suggested – why? We have all kinds of available retail space located only on the main street but in strip malls as well. One can go from small storefronts to large boxstyle buildings like the Staples one. No, we do not need more wasted space at residents’ costs. As for the proposed second ice surface, why? We do not run hockey camps, power skating, ringette training, figure skating clinics in the summer. In fact we no longer have the March Break hockey tournament for the house league teams like we once did. We only have ice for 33 weeks what happens for the other 19 weeks? If we had those kinds of clinics then I could

se a demand. Next for the Kanata Lazers, a U18 team, the suggestion of them coming here makes me question the motives of the owner and the credulity of our director. We may have seven or eight games up here on a trial basis but are these high schools going to come up here for practices and home games? Are their fans going to drive for an hour in winter to see them play? I doubt it. I would question the owner’s motives. Is he using us to ratchet a better deal at the existing site and why not go to a nearer arena? As for the pool it’s nice but how many people are going to use it. We are a community that has little to no growth. Stats Can reported the Town of Renfrew grew by five persons over five years (2011-2016). We are a town that the number of seniors is larger than the under 15 crowd. That is why we have high water rates and now high property taxes. As for support from Horton and Admaston townships, I seriously doubt that they will help through increasing their property taxes. We saw what happened in Smiths Falls. Yes it would be nice to have all of these things but this council must show good governance knowing that costs are coming down the line due to the MPAC decisions, real construction costs, any increases due to OPP costs, added to that regular operational town costs, plus finally increases due to the water treatment retrofits that may be needed. This facility is rated for a 20-year life cycle. It doesn’t mean it will be totally decrepit at that time but some retrofits may be needed. It has already been in existence for 10 years. I suggest instead of a heart decision that everybody use their minds and make a careful intellectual decision.

Elena also participated in the 2017 Relay for Life, and with her friend, Dori Pilgrim, raised $250 for their group by setting up a lemonade stand and selling cookies and squares that they made. “It’s a cause that obviously hits very close to home,” says Laura.

Barb Desilets, RVH Foundation Executive Director thanked Elena and said the donation would be earmarked for the oncology unit. “You are a very generous and unselfish young lady, and your gift will help to make a difference for our cancer patients.”

A special birthday celebration makes a difference for oncology patients While many of her classmates were enjoying the first week off school playing with friends or travelling with family, Elena Valliquette was on a special mission. She accompanied her mom to her chemo treatment at RVH on July 5, just one day after her eleventh birthday, and a few months after losing her grandma to cancer, to make a $205 donation to the hospital. She had celebrated her day with a sleepover and an escape room adventure, but let her friends know that she didn’t want presents—instead she asked for gifts of money to put towards the donation.

“I did it because of my mom and my grandma,” says Elena. This is not the first time Elena has put others ahead of herself. Her mom, Laura, notes, “This is what she wanted to do this year. She has given to Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) and hospice in the past.” “Such a thoughtful and mature gesture from Elena. I know her Mom and extended family are very proud of her. It’s been a pleasure watching her grow into this responsible young lady,” remarked Randy Penney, RVH President & CEO.

Elena Valliquette presents funds raised at her birthday party in lieu of gifts for the RVH oncology unit. Flowers blooming for fair RENFREW AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY

Summer rain means beautiful gardens. And while you are gardening this summer, why not take a look at the floriculture list for the 2017 Renfrew Fair. The list is ready now and can be picked up at the office in the Armouries. We look forward to seeing new exhibitors. There are entries for cut flowers, established plants and floral arrangements. As soon as one fair is over, the committee meets to discuss concerns and to make up a new list for the following year. We try to make enough changes to make it fun and challenging for our exhibitors. Our theme for 2017 is ‘Canada — Celebrating 150 Years.’ The committee tries to find class titles that reflect the theme and are interesting and fun. A couple of examples are ‘Space Odyssey’ and ‘The Old Ice Cream Parlor.’ Included in the entries for cut flowers are petunias, marigolds, hosta,

asters, gladiolus and many more. Entries are judged on the quality of the exhibit, the cleanliness of the plant and container and following the directions in each class. Included in the list are rules and hints to help you with your entries. All exhibitors must purchase a $5 membership to enter in the fair competitions and then they can enter in as many classes in any of the sections in the Agricultural Hall as they wish. An entry tag (available at the fair office) must be attached to all entries before bringing them to the hall. The fair office will also give you an entry form which must be filled in and handed into the office when the exhibits are dropped off to the Exhibit Hall. All exhibits are dropped off on the Tuesday evening before the fair starts, between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. The exhibitor returns to the fair on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. to retrieve their exhibits. If you can grow a plant, you can find a class to enter.

Canadians, it’s time to give something that’s inside you to mark Canada’s 150. Blood. It’s in you to give, now more than ever. “There is a critical need for more blood donors this summer,” said Mary Ann St. Michael, territory manager for Canadian Blood Services (CBS). She noted they have not had to stop any procedures yet due to the critical need level. On June 28, the County of Renfrew and CBS announced a new goal for units of blood. The County of Renfrew is an official member of the Partners for Life program with CBS. In 2016, the county pledged 80 units of blood from employees, friends and family. This year, to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial, the goal is 150 units of blood. On June 28, Renfrew’s Canada 150 Clinic was held at the Bonnechere

Manor. To officially open the clinic, Joyce Scott and Barry Dick cut the ribbon with officials. Scott, who is from the Calabogie area, lives with a form of leukemia and received blood in 2015, while Dick, from the Douglas area, is also a blood recipient. CBS and the county are now set to hold a number of different blood donor clinics in towns that have hosted them at least once this year, in honour of the new 150 target. The clinic collected approximately 80 units of blood. At each of the clinics, the county and CBS will host sign-up drives, as well as give each donor a Canada 150 pin as a thank you. A Canada 150 clinic was held in Arnprior on July 12. The next CBS and Renfrew County Canada 150 Blood Donor Clinics are: July 18 at the Petawawa Civic Centre, Aug. 8 at the Germania Club in Pembroke and Nov. 6 at the Eganville Royal Canadian Legion. It was another successful year of the Silver Chain Challenge, especially for the County of Renfrew as they take home the Warden’s Plate for another year. There were over 160 participants in this year’s Silver Chain Challenge, and over 120 of those who participated were from Renfrew County. County residents recorded more than 28,000 kilometres of walking, running and biking. Warden of the County of Renfrew, Jennifer Murphy, said, “Thank you all for your participation and for making Renfrew County a healthier more active place to live. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this friendly competition, it was one big step closer to a more active and healthier community.” The Ottawa Valley Cycling and Active Transportation Alliance and the Physical Activity Network work diligently on promoting active transportation and active lifestyles, all of which helps create a healthier and happier community. Their partnership and support of the Silver Chain Challenge has been gratefully accepted. The challenge doesn’t end here; residents can still input their kilometres year-round on the Silver Chain Challenge website at www.silverchainchallenge.ca. Organizers are hoping that residents take the challenge as a launch point to set goals, challenge themselves to be more active and get ready for June 1, 2018 when the Silver Chain Challenge will begin again.

Proposal tackles cellular dead zones across Eastern Ontario Mobile broadband critical to growth: Renfrew County, Eastern Ontario Regional Network The County of Renfrew is pleased to support efforts by the Eastern Ontario Regional Network to seek federal and provincial support to improve cellular coverage in the region. Gaps in cellular services are standing in the way of the region’s economic growth and public safety. The Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) is proposing a $213-million public-private partnership to improve both the reach and quality of cellular data services in the region. According to an engineering study commissioned by EORN: • About one quarter of the area where there are homes, businesses or major roads in the region cannot access any cellular services. • Depending on the cell carrier, another 28 per cent to 40 per cent of the area has inadequate capacity to provide high-quality mobile broadband service given the demand, which continues to grow. “Residents, businesses and first responders are relying more and more on effective and reliable communications every day. “Mobile broadband is an essential tool to grow local businesses, generate jobs, and would continue to strengthen Eastern Ontario as an area that provides the expected services that attract residents, businesses

and tourism,” said Warden of the County of Renfrew Jennifer Murphy. The gaps are the result of market failure. Rural areas don’t generate enough revenue for cell carriers to build adequate services. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission recently designated both mobile and fixed broadband as basic services for all Canadians. A public-private partnership would reduce carriers’ infrastructure costs, creating a stronger business case to improve services and meet the commission’s basic services goals.

Too often, Eastern Ontarians find themselves with no signal or dropped cell services. J. MURRAY JONES

“Too often, Eastern Ontarians find themselves with no signal or dropped cell services. EORN is building on the investment we’ve already made in fibre optics across the region to close the gap in cell services and improve economic growth, quality of life and public safety,” said EORN chair J. Murray Jones. “The demand for mobile data is growing exponentially, but our region is deeply lack-

ing the needed infrastructure to keep up. This project is our top priority because Eastern Ontario’s future is at stake,” said Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus chair Robert Quaiff. EORN has submitted a detailed business case for cell expansion to the federal and provincial governments. The proposal also includes a dedicated, public safety broadband network to seamlessly connect first responders regionwide. Building both networks together would cost about $299 million, saving about $47 million compared to building them separately ABOUT EORN

EORN, a nonprofit created by the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus, helped to improve fixed broadband access to nearly 90 per cent of Eastern Ontario through a $175-million network funded by the federal, provincial and municipal governments and the private sector service providers. It works with governments and community organizations to improve and leverage broadband access to fuel economic development and growth across the region. The wardens’ caucus directed EORN to prepare and submit a project proposal to improve access to mobile broadband services and support the creation of a public safety broadband network.

The world’s largest collection of Allis-Chalmers tractors went to auction near Renfrew on July 15. About 300 machines were up for sale at Lochwinnoch Road farm. George Nesbitt, together with his common law wife Ginette Baillargeon, says goodbye to his massive collection of Allis-Chalmers tractors. The auction at his farm was expected to generate about $5 million in sales. His fascination with the tractors goes back to childhood when he flipped through his father’s farm magazines. He first three were purchased when he began farming on his own at age 20. Below left: Greeting potential buyers at the gate are, from left, William O’Shea, Robert Baillargeon, and Heritage Radio’s Vic Garbutt. Below right: There were plenty of strange looking machines to satisfy the curious, including a 1954 Narrow Gauge. Bottom: Many participants at the auction brought digital cameras with them. The 1966 Allis-Chalmers 190XT, middle, drew more than a few toward it.

Kids Week at the museum Good friends, good music, good cause at July 27 fundraiser MCDOUGALL MILL MUSEUM

Wear your Sunday best - gloves, hats, fascinators, and bring your favourite tea cup! The history of tea parties, proper etiquette, light snacks and of course fresh brewed tea. The museum will also have displays showcasing beautiful dishes and tea sets. Please contact the museum if you would like to attend, as spots are limited. Admission is $10 and goes towards fundraising for the museum. Musicians and music lovers alike are invited to Days Inn in Renfrew on Thursday July 27 for an open mic in support of the Robbie Dean Family Counselling Centre. Hosts Jamie Cybulski and Mitch Desilets are working with Chris Kyte to raise money for Robbie Dean Family Counselling Centre. Kyte is organizing Battle the Night Lip Sync Challenge at Festival Hall in Pembroke on Sept. 22. “I had to postpone the event last year when I couldn’t garner enough sponsors, so I’m holding smaller events to help raise the funds to pay for the costs associated with this kind of event” says Kyte, “I don’t mind doing the leg work. The cause is definitely

Mitch Desilets and Jamie Cybulski on stage during an open mic night at Days Inn. worth it and the local businesses have been so generous with donations of door prizes.” Everyone is invited to come enjoy the music and encouraged to get up to sing a song or two.

It’s free to attend, however Kyte will be on hand to collect donations. “Even a dollar two here and there adds up.” And everyone’s name will be entered into a draw

for great door prizes from Renfrew and area businesses. Musician sign up is at 7 p.m. and music gets underway around 7:30 p.m. “This community is famous for coming together to support fundraising and organizations; I see it every day in my job with myFM. It makes me proud to call Renfrew and the Valley home.” She reminds potential participants that if you don’t play an instrument that’s okay. “There are plenty of musicians on hand willing to accompany vocalists,” said Kyte. Robbie Dean Family Counselling Centre is a not-for-profit organization that works with families and individuals in distress or crisis on their journey to wellness.

Renfrew Golf Club ladies win intersectionals RVHF lottery prize KEVIN SEBULSKI Renfrew Golf Club

Our Renfrew ladies intersectional team were victorious on Sunday over Algonquin, Larrimac and Kingsway golf courses. Not only did our ladies play great, but they looked great in their Greg Norman python print tops. Thank you to Brad Gould and Finnigan’s Roadhouse for holding their Tee-Up the Tunes charity golf tournament with us on Saturday. The event benefited Renfrew and Area Health Services Village, and after a great day of golf and dinner, everyone was bused back to Finnigan’s for an evening of live music. Our ladies day winners from Tuesday are Anne Windle in A flight, with Kim McDonald in second. Alexa Legris was victorious in B flight with the week’s high point score of 40.5. Cheryl Cambbell was only a point behind Alexa, with Kathy McAllister, Joyce Stark, Leanne Reid and Karen Audette all tying for third. And in C flight, Lesley Murray squeaked out a half-point victory over both Jean Lacourse and Cathy O’Donnell. Honey pot winners were Marsha Hale in A flight and Simmone Kemp in B flight, who won $63 and may have to forgo her amateur

Volunteers needed for Whitewater Kings

The new Whitewater Kings hockey organization is seeking volunteers for game day duties for the 2017 to 2018 season. The information meeting will be held on Thursday, July 27 at 7 p.m. at the arena in Cobden. There are many responsibilities necessary to stage a game in the Central Canada Hockey League 2 (CCHL2), including off-ice officials, public address announcers, canteen staff, security, door people, music and video staff, among others. Experience is not essential, but it would be helpful. Training will be provided by the Kings’ operations manager, Jamie McConnell. “We encourage all hockey fans to take a strong interest in their junior hockey team and volunteer their services in a variety of capacities,” says a press release. These volunteer positions would be beneficial for high school students, as they are required to complete 40 hours of volunteer service to obtain their high school diploma. In the end, after all positions are filled, we hope to build a warm, hospitable volunteer staff, committed to ensuring that local hockey fans enjoy the experience. For any additional information, please contact McConnell at 613-717-2710 or wwkingsops@hotmail.com. Applications will be made available at the meeting on July 27. Those selected will be contacted for an interview/meeting to assure that you are placed in the correct position.

New Ottawa 67’s staff The Ottawa 67’s have their guys. The hockey club’s 50th anniversary season will feature a pair of key new faces that look to further the 67’s reputation into the next 50 years. The 67’s recently unveiled James Boyd as general manager and appointed André Tourigny as vice-president of hockey operations and head coach. “We’ve hit the jackpot here,” said 67’s governor Jeff Hunt. “This was a big decision for our hockey club and we scored big with James and André. There are 27 years of major junior coaching experience and 19 years of GM experience between them and both have been highly successful – we definitely got the right guys.” The 67’s have unveiled the schedule for their 50th anniversary season that will open Sept. 21 in Barrie, with their home opener set for Sunday, Sept. 24 against the reigning OHL Champions, the Erie Otters. Season tickets for the 67’s 50th anniversaryseason are on sale now at Ottawa67s.com, by calling 613.232.6767 X1 Option 2, or in person at The Box Office at TD Place. Season Ticket Packages start as low as $325 – less than $10 per game.

PRAYERS

In Memory of

BRADY LORNE MILLS

August 6, 1992 - July 15, 2016 It has been a long, sad year without Brady and his warm dimpled smile, adventurous spirit and kind heart. Despite the sudden loss of this talented young man’s bright future, we go on with our days trying to honour the life he lived - “A huntin’, fishin’, and lovin’ every day..” surrounded by all of the great memories we have of him. Lovingly thought of every day, Mom (Cheryl), Dad (Alan), and Big Brother Tyler. We’d like to thank family, friends, and neighbours for all the help and support on our worst days and throughout the year.

In loving memory of my dear husband September 20, 1923 – July 12, 2016 A lonely tear and the saddest eyes, I have ever seen, you suddenly passed away. You were my love, you were my life. The day you left, my life went to. Now I exist from day to day. It is so sad, to walk this road alone, instead of side by side. You gave to me, through the years, such joy and happiness. You were so kind, loving and gentle, always gave a helping hand. It was the joy you gave me, when you were by my side. You left me such beautiful memories, I will treasure through the years. Now there is only sorrow and tears. You joined the army in 1941. Shortly after you were posted overseas. In 1946 you were posted back to Canada to Camp Borden. In 1952 you were posted to Korea for 1 year. Through the years, you were posted to various locations in Canada including Whitehorse, Y.T. for 3 years. Then came 3 years in Germany. This posting was different. I joined you over there. We travelled when we could. Oh the places that we saw. The Leaning Tower, Vatican, and the Tower of London just to name a few. Your tour was finished and we were home again. There were more postings in Canada. Then you left the military. You served your country well. Then came civilian life. They said it is too hard to adjust. But as you went to work each day, you adjusted well. You retired in 1988. We travelled some. Oh how we enjoyed our quiet time. You would get out our picture album, down memory lane we’d go. As you turned the pages, laughter would ring out. It seemed like we were there again. When I get out our album, as I turn the pages, there is no laughter. It’s not the same. With a heavy heart I close the book. I’ll try another day. When my time has come at last, in your footsteps I will walk. I know when I’ve reached my journey’s end, I will see you standing there. With a joyful cry, together again, you knew I’d follow you. Oh how I miss you, Love you forever Olga

Dragonfly welcomes large family golf tournament BILL RAINBOTH

Dragonfly Golf Links

The group photo from the Hass family and friends golf tournament encapsulates what Dragonfly Golf Links is all about. Dragonfly prides herself as being a place where family and friends can get together for some fun on a beautifully conditioned golf course. Big shout out to Gary Hass for organizing the second annual Hass Family and Friends Golf Day on Saturday, July 8. Prizes and a barbecue dinner followed 18 holes of golf for over 60 golfers. This event started the week off on a great note, and we were fortunate that the weather co-operated (somewhat) for the remainder. On Monday, Layton Knight-Locke Contracting posted the lowest net and gross score of the night. Dustin Howard was closest to the pin on No. 5, and Justin Knight-Locke was closest on No. 7. Valley Automation and Controls were in

full control of their golf games to take A flight on Tuesday night, with Legere Industrial Supplies claiming victory in B flight. Rob Kimberly was closest to the pin on No. 5 and Matt Forrest was closest on No. 7. On Wednesday, Apollo Property Management managed their way to a win in A flight, beating the next closest competitor by seven strokes. A similar annihilation was occurring in B flight, where Valley Ventilation blew away the competition, posting a 65 — the lowest score of the week. Ladies night was picture perfect last Thursday. The Happy Campers won A flight over the Red Hot hybrids via the always popular tiebreaker. The Partee of Fore celebrated a B flight victory, and C flight was won by Underskilled and Over Par. The closest to the pin winner was Gail Keyes on No. 7, and the pro shop draw winner was Kat James. Congrats to all.

New provincial cycling funding could be used in Renfrew County Cycling and active transportation advocates are urging county and municipal politicians to take advantage of new provincial funding available to encourage people to get out of their cars and onto bikes. Local delegates to the recent Eastern Ontario Active Transportation Summit in Carleton Place were enthused with the details they heard about the new $50-million Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling Program, which has an application deadline of Aug. 18. Funding for the program comes from the province’s Climate Change Action Plan, and it is being invested in commuter cycling networks and installation of more cycling facilities. Although much of the funding is directed at urban needs, there is also a stream of funding for smaller municipalities (population less than 15,000), under which there is annual funding of up to $25,000 available per municipality on a first come, first served basis, with the province paying 80 per cent of project costs. Municipalities may also pursue funding partnerships with third parties, including other municipalities (upper, lower or single-tier), indigenous communities, conservation authorities and municipal service agencies. Under both streams, funding is to be used for capital investments in new commuter cycling infrastructure and enhancements to existing cycling infrastructure to better support commuting cyclists. It cannot be used to support low frequency or temporary cycling infrastructure. “Infrastructure such as hardened shoulders and signage that would help get kids to school or employees to workplaces might be considered,” said Ish Theilheimer, co-chair of the Ottawa Valley Cycling and Active Transportation Alliance. “So might bike racks, route signs and other facilities that encourage everyday cycling.” One of the highlights of the summit for local delegates was the workshop on the Voyageur Cycle Route, a trans-Canada cycle route being planned with leadership from the Discovery Routes, a nonprofit alliance from the North Bay area. They have successfully completed a route for cyclists travelling across Canada that extends from Sudbury to Mattawa, and now they are working on identifying and bringing together the needed resources and municipal partners to complete a route to Ottawa. Delegates from Renfrew County participated in a workshop session going through maps, looking at route options and listing the attractions, facilities and services along each route.

EDPS’s submission was entitled, “Learning together about Indigenous peoples and culture.” Data collected from student focus groups at EDPS — where the student population is about 20 per cent Indigenous — indicated that students were experiencing subtle and overt bias. In response to this, school staff took on the challenging task of exploring their own biases, engaging with the local Algonquin Community to learn more about Indigenous culture and its worldview, and providing culturally responsive instruction. We will miss your quiet yet resourceful leadership and wish you all the best in your studies. Marjorie Adam, finance and facilities services chair, recently presented the board budget for 2017-2018. The board has approved the expenditure of $134.9 million dollars for 2017-18. This is an increase of $6.4 million with a large portion of this as a result of provincially negotiated labour agreements with our unions. This included increases to salaries, direct funding to a benefit trust and additional staffing allocations with the union groups. Our special education program continues to be a priority for the Board. We have received additional grants over the past 4 years of which $1.2 million was directed to provide additional program services. Just over $14 million is allocated to special edu-

This past June Renfrew and Area Seniors’ Home Support held our annual Dessert Theatre. It was the fifth instalment in a series of plays written by Bob Bouchard of the continuing adventures of Hank and Alora. Bob has a long history with Renfrew & Area Seniors’ Home Support — he got involved shortly after he retired from his teaching job in 1988 as he had attended an information session at Ma-Te-Way Park hosted by Chris Cobus, the executive director at the time. Wouldn’t you know it Bob along with friend Jack Grant began volunteering with the income tax program and before he knew it he had joined the fundraising committee. The fundraising committee hosted a popular variety show for some time and then later partnered with Randy Foster the Fiddling Fireman to hold some very successful fiddling fundraisers. Bob worked very hard with the committee and always shared creative fun ideas to raise money. He took a break from the committee for while in the 2000s and was invited by Judy Ewart, our current executive director, to attend a volunteer luncheon in honour of past volunteers. It was at this luncheon that the idea for a “play” was born. Bob would rather call them skits, as he modeled them after a sitcom format complete with live entertainment between scenes instead of commercials. While tossing around fundraising ideas a committee member mentioned: “We should do a play!” it

sounded like a great idea until they realized that the cost of getting the rights to a play were very expensive. Bob responded: “Why don’t we write our own skits?!” and the rest as they say is history ... 7 words and 5 Dessert theatres later Bob has helped us to raise thousands of dollars through his creativity and generosity. In June alone from the sale of the geraniums, he generously donated, and his play “Who or What is it Anyways?” along with cast Doug Miller, Shirley Hill and Mike Nagrodski they helped us raise $1,200.00 for Renfrew and Area Seniors’ Home Support. These are the people who are helping people. These are the stories of how a volunteer is born, and it is as simple as having a conversation and sharing ideas. Be open to the conversation and do not be shy to share your ideas, we all have special talents we can share. Our 4th annual Charity Golf Tournament was held May 26 at the Renfrew Golf Club. Stop by renfrewhomesupport.ca under News and Events for our 2017 summer newsletter to learn how our community sponsors helped us to raise over $3,000 for our non-urgent medical transportation program. We were also the proud recipients of the 2017 Chamber of Commerce Presidents Award. Renfrew & Area Seniors’ Home Support will be moving our office this summer to our new location 214 Raglan St. S. (between The Golden Age Activity Centre and Aikenhead’s Pharmacy). We look forward to serving you from this location.

Sparky, old and orange, was king of the cats in the barn Sparky was older than I was. And he ruled the roost as far as the cat population went at the farm. He was an orange colour, and one eye was green and the other blue. He certainly wasn’t much to look at. The barn cats, and there were many of them, could be held and cuddled. Not Sparky! If I tried to pick him up, he would go stiff as a board, snarl, and glare at me, and act like maiming me for life was a distinct possibility. So, I left him alone. The barn cats were never allowed in the house. Mother thought anything walking on four feet should be in the barn! I never knew where all the kittens came from. I thought everyone in Northcote had a pile of them, and I heard that some people, when the numbers grew, put them in a grist bag and threw them in the Bonnechere River. The very thought sent chills right through my body, and I was

grateful none of our cats came to that end. A n d it wasn’t unusual for someone like Two Mile Herman to bring a kitten to the Northcote School and try to talk someone into taking it home. This rarely worked, since we all had our own barnful of cats. No one could remember when or where Sparky came from. But one day my older brother Everett said it was Sparky who was responsible for the pack of cats we housed in the barn. I couldn’t imagine how that was possible. He never left the place to bring a new cat to the farm. And when I mentioned that fact to

Everett, he just threw back his h e a d a n d laughed.

Sparky was as big as a small Collie dog, and he always looked like he had had a serious confrontation with some wild animal in the bush, which he frequented often. Sometimes he would be gone for days, and as soon as Father would say “good riddance,” there Sparky would appear as large as life. That was when I first heard that a cat had nine lives. How anyone figured that out was beyond me. Did someone stop to count them? I did know the barn cats survived many close calls though. Often a cow would

kick a cat and it would land several feet away, stand up, shake itself off as if getting rid of the chaff from the hay laying around, and walk off as if nothing had happened. I once asked my older and much wiser sister Audrey what the cats ate. We certainly never fed them. There were several old battered tin plates in the barn that were filled with milk when the milking was done. But to me that was all they ever put in their stomachs. But Audrey said they survived on eating mice. That too, sent chills up my back. I didn’t know whether to root for the cat or the mouse, since I loved animals of every description. So if the cats survived on mice and milk, they sure flourished. I once tried to give them names, but so many of them looked alike that I gave up. Except for Sparky. For the longest time he was the only one in the barn who

had different coloured eyes. On hot summer days, one of my favourite places was sitting on the cement platform that held the pump and often a barn cat would wander over, and I would take it on my lap, and my greatest joy was when it snuggled down and started to purr. Never in a hundred years could I do that with Sparky! Some of the barn cats were black and white, and sometimes a grey striped kitten would appear, and occasionally, I would go into the barn and find a new batch of kittens huddled in the hay, and they would be the spitting image of Sparky. Once I found one new kitten that even had two different coloured eyes. I could never figure out how a new kitten could look like old Sparky. By way of explanation, my brother Everett would just say, “old Sparky’s been at it again” whatever that meant. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
