A Renfrew man is facing charges of drugging and .CA sexually assaulting a.COMfemale. The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged Justin MacGregor, 22, of Renfrew, with several offences related to a sexual assault that was reported to police on Thursday, July 14. Police believe there may be other victims and are urging others to contact them. The investigation began when a victim reported to officers that she was sexually assaulted in late June by a male known to her. MacGregor was arrested and charged with sexual assault and overcoming resistance by administering a drug. He was held in custody for a bail hearing on Monday, July 18. There has been some confusion regarding the identity of the suspect as there is at least one other individual in the Renfrew area with a similar name around the same age. The family of a local man with a name close to the suspect’s is concerned he will be mistaken for the accused.

Renfrew County Paramedic drone helps at massive Lanark County fire Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

New technology in Renfrew County has helped tame an often-familiar foe at this time of year: a grassfire. On July 13 a grass and brush fire ripped down the CP Rail lines from Glen Tay to Tay Valley Township, scorching approximately 20 kilometres of grass and brush along the route. Fifty-four 9-1-1 calls came into the Smiths Falls Fire Department, the first at 2:30 p.m. and the fire was considered under control at 6:30 p.m. Multiple Lanark County fire departments and other emergency services were called in to assist on the fire that stretched down highways 7 and 43, including the Renfrew County Paramedic Unmanned Aerial Vehicle team (UAV-drone). Chief paramedic and director of emergency services for Renfrew County Mike Nolan explained the Lanark County Unified Command Team asked them to bring in the drone to assist with the situation. “We did hot spot analysis, to see if essentially the fire was out and to calculate the area that was burned,” said Nolan. “We were able to give live real time images to the OPP, rail authorities and fire services.”

The remote access team of deputy chief Brian Leahey, UAV (drone) operator, paramedics Steve Osipenko, Matt Lasek and Nolan were on scene for about two-and-a -half hours. “We were able to tell them the extent of the burn area as well as provide assurance that there were no hot spots or risk,” said Nolan. The UAV team, in partnership with InDro Robitics from British Columbia, has been running in Renfrew County for two years and Nolan says they consider themselves a regional resource. Drummond/North Elmsley, Tay Valley Fire Rescue fire chief Greg Saunders said this was the first time their department had used the drone. “I haven’t had a chance to look at the footage,” Saunders told the Perth Courier said as he held up a USB drive with images from the drone. “It’s new technology” CHIEF MIKE NOLAN RENFREW COUNTY PARAMEDIC Saunders said he knew Renfrew had the Renfrew County Paramedic deputy chief Brian Leahey operates the unmanned aerial vetechnology, but “never even thought about hicle (drone) during a fire in the Perth/Smiths Falls area on July 13. using it,” until Ed McPherson, EMS chief of The UAV was also recently used after the the Lanark County Paramedic Service, men- resource. “Lanark County Unified Command ex- landslide in Horton earlier this year. OPP deal with stolen, recovered vehicles On Thursday, July 7 shortly after 5 p.m. an OPP auxiliary officer reported seeing a possible stolen vehicle on Highway 60 going into Renfrew. The officer located the vehicle, a blue Toyota Matrix, which had been stolen in Pembroke overnight. Officers stopped the vehicle on Lochiel Street North in Renfrew and two occupants were arrested while a third ran away and was pursued by officers. He was not located, however, his identity was known to police. Later that night a 2005 Dodge Caravan was stolen from a residence on Albert Street in Renfrew. The vehicle was recovered in Quebec July 8. Charges are pending against a 17-year-old male from Petawawa. Many vehicle thefts are thefts of opportunity as keys are often left in vehicles. Secure your vehicle overnight by ensuring you remove keys and lock it. Thieves will move on to find an easy target. Don’t make it easy for them, be a hard target. OPP WEEKLY NEWS

Officers attended and caught the male in a backyard nearby. He was arrested for impaired driving. Following breath tests at the detachment a 28-year-old man from McNab-Braeside was charged with impaired driving, driving over 80mgs and failing to comply with a probation order. but critical condition. Renfrew Walmart manager Pat Rees confirmed on July 15 the Walmart employee was still at the Heart Institute. “They have induced him into a coma and will slowly bring him out on Sunday,” said Rees. She praised the response of the paramedics and the 911 operators. “They were absolutely awesome,” said Rees. “We were all scared and didn’t know what to do. They were fast and efficient.” Nolan applauds the efforts of the staff at Walmart for quickly recognizing the man was in distress and for calling 9-1-1 right

away. “We encourage the community to keep current with their CPR training,” said Nolan. He has helped install 200 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) across Renfrew County. “We encourage all businesses in Renfrew County to implement AEDs,” said Nolan. Walmart does not have an AED but Rees confirms they will be talking with their compliance manager at their next meeting about getting one for sure. “It would have for sure helped to have one on-site,” said Rees. “You can only do so much with CPR.”

OPP charge driver of July 4 collision Police have charged a male after a collision closed Highway 17 near Renfrew on July 4. The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) report that on July 4 at 3 p.m., a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck was westbound on Highway 17 at the Bonnechere River Bridge in the Township of Horton. The pickup was towing a 1990 McCoy, dual-axle dump trailer and was loaded with a soil/gravel mixture. This vehicle combination was determined to be a ‘commercial motor vehicle,’ within the meaning of the Highway Traffic Act by way of actual gross weight. The investigation revealed a wheel completely separated from

the front, right trailer axle, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The front-end of the vehicle struck the concrete wall on the bridge causing significant damage. The load carried in the trailer spilled across both lanes of the highway. Highway 17 was closed for approximately two hours as a result. A 64-year-old Horton Township man was the driver and registered owner of the both the truck and trailer. He has been charged with six offences and was issued a summons to appear in provincial offences court in Renfrew on Aug. 19. Sgt. Derek McLeod led the investiga-

OPP warn of iTunes scam in the Valley The Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to warn residents of an iTunes scam that has recently surfaced. Increasingly, police have received complaints where fraudsters request payment for various fraudulent reasons through the purchase of iTunes gift cards. In one scenario scammers impersonate the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and claim that the target owes ‘back taxes.; The target is advised payment must be made immediately to avoid arrest and serious legal consequences. The targets are instructed to purchase and activate iTunes gift cards and pro-

vide the codes back to the fraudsters as a form of payment. In a second scenario, scammers have impersonated a grandchild in need of financial help due to legal trouble and payment by iTunes cards is needed to bail the grandchild out of jail or pay fines. Consumers need to be aware and retailers should keep the scam in mind when faced with consumers interested in purchasing large quantities of iTunes cards. Sonya Bergin, Quinn Solar to perform July 30 in Low Square Sherry Haaima

Renfrew musician Sonya Bergin is gearing up to celebrate two things she loves – her music and her hometown – Renfrew. Bergin, with the help of fellow local musician Quinn Solar, will host an afternoon concert July 30 in Low Square in front of town hall on Raglan Street. The show will run from 2:30-4 p.m., weather permitting. Bergin has just completed her first year in the mental health and addictions program at Canadore College and has been in studio recording two songs, one she wrote, called Exhausted and another that’s been written by Taylor Abram and Zac Wrixon, producers at Wellcraft studios where she’s recording. Bergin a St. Joseph’s Catholic High School graduate, has been singing for about six years. “I first started out at an elementary school talent show,” she said. She praises the talents of her friend Solar, who will be providing finger-style guitar. The duo will perform original songs, as well as covers, said Bergin. PERMISSION GRANTED

July 12, Renfrew council granted permission for the use of Low Square, as well as access to a power outlet to plug in a microphone, speakers and instruments. Coun. OPINION

Connected to your community

A salute to new attractions Several major Upper Ottawa Valley summer festivals have come and gone. There was the Lumber Baron Festival in Renfrew with its salute to the lumberjacks of old, including the legendary Big Joe Mufferaw. Those days will be kept alive by the Loggers Memory Project at Red Pine Bay. Remember the Salutes to the Valley that attracted such stars and Tommy Hunter and Carroll Baker to Arnprior’s Robert Simpson Park. Then there were the dance halls that reverberated to tapping toes and snapping fingers as Mac Beattie and other popular fiddlers entertained residents and tourists alike. Ah, those were the days. But don’t waste time lamenting the past. While those festivals and dance halls have come and gone, there are many new intriguing summer attractions that have cropped up recently to keep people engaged and in many cases enlightened. For instance, the Midsummer Herbfest is relocating to our shores. The popular celebration of healthy living and the power of herbs is being held on the shores of White Lake at the Waba Cottage Museum on July 31. The marvelous gardens are an ideal site for an herb love-in. Arnprior’s newest summer festival is taking advantage of the growing popularity of dragon boating. Come down to Robert Simpson Park this Saturday, July 23, and find why it’s such an attractive exercise. Speaking of exercise, the Bonnechere

River Watershed Project has dramatically expanded its number of paddles this summer as it pays homage to our wonderful rivers (come on Ottawa, give the Ottawa River its much deserved heritage designation). Next up is this Saturday’s new paddle from Portage-duFort to the Horton boat launch Just outside Horton, the Avalon Ranch is hosting a two-day canine watersports competition this weekend. It’s another relatively new sport that is growing by leaps and bounds (especially by the dogs who appear to love the challenge). Another new endeavor this summer is Walk the Opeongo Line. Not content with just making the pilgrimage to St. Ann’s in Cormac on the long weekend, a band of intrepid hikers is walking there from Renfrew. The faithful begin their four-day inspirational trek next Thursday with the Renfrew to Mount St. Patrick stretch. There are plenty of other captivating events around the area this summer from horse shows on Scheel Drive and remote-controlled radio airplane fly-ins at Vydon Acres to motocross races on Kennelly Mountain and water skiing fun at Burnstown Beach. And Calabogie Peaks is starting its own musical tradition taking advantage of its natural amphitheatre with its Mountain Man and Blues and Ribfest festivals. Lumber Baron and Salute to the Valley may have become distant memories, but there are many other attractions to keep everyone occupied this summer. So get out there and enjoy them.

Safety ambassador urges you to play safe this summer To the editor:

As a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program and a Safety Ambassador for the PLAYSAFE Program, I have met kids who have lost limbs in accidents that could have been prevented. With the weather warming up, it’s a good time to teach kids about the dangers that can come with summer, such as lawn mowers, boat motors and playing around water areas. INSIDE

I encourage parents to go on a “safety walk” with their children and point out the hazards in their area. By spreading the PLAYSAFE message, children learn to spot the danger before they play, and become more conscious of potential dangers. It only takes a split second for an accident to happen, so let’s all PLAYSAFE!

MP Cheryl Gallant to attend public meeting on military Staff

The RCAF Wing in Renfrew is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, July 28 to discuss how government is treating members of the military. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant is the invited guest at the session, which will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wing. Gallant has been a strong critic of some recent moves by the new federal Liberal government regarding the military, going as far

as suggesting some of the decisions are putting soldiers’ lives at risk. However, Gallant and the previous Conservative government have also came under fire for poor treatment of servicemen, especially those dealing with post traumatic distress syndrome. RCAF Wing president Joan Price said public questions and comments will be welcome at the meeting. Gallant recently hosted a meeting at the Arnprior Legion to get input from

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant has fun with children at a community event.

MP defends campgrounds Cheryl Gallant, MP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, is calling on the Trudeau Liberals to drop plans to go after private, familyrun campgrounds as a source of revenue to pay for out-of-control spending. This is a direct assault on middle class Canadians, said Gallant in a recent press release. “Jobs in rural Ontario are scarce. This is another attack on rural Canada,” said the press release. “Referring to the little noticed headline in the recent Liberal deficit budget, ‘Enhanced Tax Collections,’ Trudeau tax collectors have been sending out letters to familyowned campgrounds, telling them they are not considered a ‘small business’ if they have less than five full-time employees,” said Gallant. “The targets in this case are small campgrounds typically run by a husband, wife and family. They may even be able to give summer jobs to a few local kids. Trudeau is actually denying the small business deduction to these campgrounds for being ‘too small’. The federal budget identifies this as one of their tax ‘integrity’ measures hoping to increase tax revenues by more than $1.2 billion dollars. All this to pay for things like the multi-million dollar renovations at the prime minister’s residence, his children’s nannies and bigger ticket items like $2.65 billion dollars for ‘climate change’ in other countries,” said Gallant. “I expected Trudeau to go after

small business with his public attack claiming they were mostly ‘tax scams’ set up to avoid paying taxes. However, the Liberals actually going after small campgrounds is almost unbelievable,” said Gallant. “What about going after their big business Toronto friends? Canadians never hear of any convictions of tax cheaters who use off-shore accounts to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.” The release went on to say: “Small campgrounds are asking to be treated like any other small business, which they are. By changing the way small campgrounds are taxed, they could be looking at a tax increase from 15 to 50 per cent. In the Ottawa Valley camping is a seasonal business. Employing five full-time year-round employees is not realistic. This is penalizing children, seniors and working couples by taking away an affordable family vacation. In addition to affecting the campground owners and the campers who use those campgrounds, the neighbouring businesses who service the campers will be adversely affected,” she said “Camping is a Canadian tradition. Not everyone can afford a cottage or a holiday property in the south of France like the current finance minister. He and the prime minister are out of touch with reality,” said the release. “Camping is family time, getting kids off video games and out in nature and the great outdoors.”

invited guests on the federal government’s review of defense policies. It resulted in a lively discussion on the purpose and future of the Canadian Armed Forces, public safety and cybersecurity, she said. CONSTITUENCY CLINICS

The July 28 meeting on the military is

scheduled to fit in with Gallant’s Renfrew Constituency Clinic. The MP will meet with constituents from 1 to 3 p.m. at Renfrew town hall. She suggests people with an issue or problem to bring up should call her office to schedule an appointment. Gallant held an Arnprior Constituency Clinic Thursday, July 14 at Arnprior Town Hall.

Strange sounds arise from marshes Nature provides stimulation for all of our senses. Twinflower, Trailing Arbutus and other wildflowers delight our nose. Scarlet Tanagers, American Goldfinches and other songbirds please our eye. And an astounding diversity of sound seduces our ear. In recent days, the at-times insufferable heat has enticed Cicada nymphs to abandon their subterranean haunts and climb up trees where as adults their ear-piercing whine fills the air. Soon a symphony of Field Crickets, Katydids and their relatives will serenade the night. And although much of summer’s bird sounds is diminishing rapidly, a few species including American Robins still greet the dawn with song. The songs of most songbirds are melodious and pleasing to the ear. The same, however, cannot be said for the vocalizations produced by much larger birds such as Great Blue Herons and Common Ravens. But to be fair to those species, their grunts, croaks and screams, unlike the pleasing offerings of songbirds, are not designed to impress potential mates. While the voices of herons and

ravens are indeed harsh and rather unpleasant, even stranger sounds arise from cattail marshes. Marshes are extremely rich habitats that harbour a great number of fascinating animals. The best way to visit a marsh is by canoe (or, reportedly, a kayak, for I have never been in one). A canoe allows you to silently float by a marsh’s edge, which is the most dynamic part of the habitat. But don’t be surprised that you will hear much more than you will see, for many of its fascinating inhabitants are very elusive. Of all birds living in marshes, rails are the most unusual. Lo-

cally, there are four species: Sora, Virginia Rail, American Coot and Common Gallinule. Coots are the least common, and are the only rails to possess toes with large flap-like lobes. The lobes allow coots to move through submerged vegetation by opening on the backstroke to provide a paddle-like surface and closing on the return stroke to slide through the vegetation. Other rails have extremely elongated toes for walking on cattail mats and floating vegetation. Rails’ bodies are compressed from side to side, a shape that allows them to walk between thick cattails. Rails are also noteworthy for their odd sounds. Soras utter shrill notes and a high-pitched whinny. Virginia Rails, the most common species locally, produce grunts that start fast and slow down, not unlike a giant coin rolling on its edge until it stops. An odd “kid-ik, kid-ik, kid-ik” is also in their vocabulary. Common Gallinules make even stranger, cackling sounds described by the famed American ornithologist William Brewster as “so varied and complex that it seems hopeless

MICHAEL RUNTZ

The long toes of this Sora allow it to walk across floating vegetation. to attempt a full description of them. Speaking generally, the notes were all loud, harsh and discordant, and nearly all curiously henlike.” If you are lucky, you will see a rail make a brief appearance at the edge of a marsh. More likely, however, you will hear its odd vocalizations arise from

somewhere behind deep inside the cattails. To the uninitiated, those bizarre sounds undoubtedly evoke an even stranger image of what their maker looks like! The Nature Number is at 613-3872503; or send an email to mruntz@ start.ca.

Bonnechere Bakery honoured with major business award Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

When you walk into the newly expanded Bonnechere Bakery and Bistro Fine Food Emporium in downtown Renfrew you know it has the wow factor. There is so much wow in the new 4,000-square-foot location, the owners were recently honoured by the Bank of Montreal (BMO) at its Celebrating Women event in Ottawa. Co-owners, and twin sisters, Maureen Hicks and Marie Schruder won the award for expansion and growth in small business for all of Eastern Ontario at a gala event at the National Arts Centre. Mary Harris, the community account manager at the Renfrew BMO, nominated the pair. “I’ve seen them grow from their small location to this and all of their creativity, said Harris. “They have done such a good job from a business perspective and I knew they were winners. In her nomination she said, “(The) creativity, talent and hard work they display is second to none. Their leadership style is unlike any other I have observed. They have an unusual blend of creativity, matched with a natural inclination for business sense. Neither one knew they were nominated for the award when they attended the event on May 22. “I just thought it was a business event where we could meet and connect with other women, said Hicks. The keynote speaker at the event was Janet Bannister who launched Kijiji Canada and during the awards presentation they heard the business description for the award winner and knew who it was for. “I was shocked, said Hicks. “We felt so honoured to step up on the stage, in our high heels! said Schruder. “They had a few gentleman to help us up, said Hicks with a laugh. “We had tears in our eyes, added Schruder. They are still letting news of the award sink in. “We feel really honoured and blessed, said Schruder. “I couldn’t take it all in that night. We are so amazed that happened. “When you get an award like this, that you weren’t expecting, you say all that hard work was worth it, added Hicks. Harris said the sisters are a shining example. “It’s inspiring. They are an example of what can be done. Sandra Henderson, senior vice president Eastern Ontario Division, explained BMO started the awards in 2012 to recognize small local entrepreneurs and now they hold eight different awards ceremonies across Canada. “It is a really good opportunity to recognize women and a way to

look at women making remarkable contributions to the community, said Henderson. She called the sisters phenomenal women. “Maureen and Marie have had a lifelong dream to be bakers and it is really interesting to see it expand and to be so wellknown, said Henderson. “What I love about them is they are so humble and warm. They are amazing women. EXPANSION

In describing the expansion Hicks recalls what she told her sister. “When someone walks in I hope they walk in with a big wow factor, said Hicks. She has been told it reminds people of downtown Montreal with a real urban feel. “We tried to have a piece of heritage, the wall coupled with the floor and we have new ideas too with a galvanized tin wall, it goes wonderfully with everything. The also have beautiful 21st century counter display units that hold their gourmet and fine foods, she noted. Near the back they even have a wall that is painted pink - the paint itself was called icing pink. “There are a lot of gentlemen who come in and it’s not too much for them, added Schruder.

The sisters were born and raised on a farm in Renfrew County, where they learned to cook from their grandmother. The idea for Bonnechere Bakery started one day when they were shopping at a mall in the city and someone had a place making fresh bread. “At that moment we said ‘let’s do that someday,’ recalled Hicks. “We thought about how our grandma made homemade bread and we started making bread. Every morning we would come in and make bread from scratch and one specialty loaf. The reason they started their first shop, at what they refer to as the yellow TIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND building, not far from the Mary Harris the community account manager at the Renfrew BMO, centre, nominated Macurrent location, walked rie Schruder, left, and Maureen Hicks for an award at the Bank of Montreal Celebrating into the store one day. The ladies purchased the entire building late last year, half if it has Fraser’s Clothing and the other half their bakery. “It gave Fraser’s a new lease on life,” said Hicks. “They are excited about it and so is the town,” added Schruder. The building itself was built in 1901 and they left a number of touches from the past in place during their renovations. They have a mirror that hides the original air conditioning unit and the one wall has decorative wainscoting. They have a vault from 1920 that was

in the O’Brien house (purchased by Fraser’s) that they think was used for prohibition. “It still works and we call it the Safe-Tea Room,” said Schruder. Inside the safe they have a number of specialty teas and coffee for sale. The pair has lived in Renfrew since 2003 and enjoy working with each other. “I think it is amazing because Maureen and I get to do all the amazing things we love to do, so we work together and go home,” said Schruder. “Look how lucky I am to work here and feel people enjoying it,” said Hicks. “We feel really blessed,” added Schruder. They now have the next generation working at the shop as they have succession plans in the work as well.

They are not done working on the new shop either, with future plans to put in a conference area upstairs. “ We hope to rent it out to people having lunch meetings,” said Hicks. The two are now using their wealth of knowledge to help other businesswomen in the downtown core. “We pop in and chat with other women in the area and encourage them,” said Hicks.

The downtown has gone square. The Square Nail, that is, opened at 188 Raglan St. South in June and is focused on reinvesting and upcycling antique pieces. Burnstown resident Deborah Pollard had a shop in the village that was opened only a few days a week wanted to go to a busier location. “I always wanted to open a store and I thought if I was going to give it a real shot I should go where there is more traffic,” said Pollard. She is very pleased and excited with the move to the downtown core. “This is the best thing I could have done,” said Pollard. “It’s been really good. I really like Renfrew. I try and spend as much time as I can here. This is my creative outlet and everything else melts away.” Pollard went to Ryerson University for fashion merchandise and also earned her professional accounting designation and currently works in finance. RELAXING

“I have a very stressful job and I find this very relaxing.” She started reinventing items when she was a teenager. “No-one wants them the way they are,” said Pollard. “They are really well constructed but don’t look nice. When you can take something old and repurpose it, it’s nice that someone can continue to use it and not bury it somewhere.” Five years ago she discovered chalk paint, which she calls a very addictive hobby. The Square Nail is the exclusive retailer for The American Paint Company, which offers an all natural, eco-friendly and solvent free paint. “I chose this one because it is 100 per cent natural and is safe for anyone,” said Pollard. The paints contain no acrylic, no

fungicide, and no co-polymers and are latex-free. Chalk paint works on furniture, wood, metal, plastic and glass. She also offers chalk paint workshops two to three times a month and people can visit her website or call to sign up. “You can bring in your own piece and I will show you how to do it,” said Pollard. “It gives them the confidence to do something bigger.” CUSTOMIZED

She does custom work and finds pieces for people. “I reinvest or transform or upcycle pieces,” said Pollard. They also sell a number of specialty items, including heirloom cutting boards from The Grain Trust based in Ottawa. She also makes bags and pillows from antique French grain sacks. “They all have different stripes on them and that is how the families would identify how to pick up their grain,” said Pollard. “They are very hard to find and they are coveted.” Pollard has hired Donna Fawcett as the shopkeeper and says it has been a perfect fit. “People come in who are looking for nostalgic items,” said Fawcett. “Deborah really has put herself into these pieces and they are beautiful and gives them a new life.” The store is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from

Avalon Ranch hosts Canine Watersports competition July 23-24 The Avalon Ranch Dog Sports and Training Facility, which has just become an official Canine Watersports Canada (CW) affiliate, is hosting a Jump into Summer competition July 23-24. The dog training facility, known for its dock dog events, is offering free admission for spectators to the two-day event. The CWC competition will be televised by Cogeco Cable on Saturday. The training facility on Lochwinnoch Road in Horton, just outside Renfrew, has been retrofitted with all the latest equipment and

rigs to train and prepare dogs for competition at all levels. Five divisions as well as two specialty divisions will be offered: Novice Dog: 0” – 11’.0”, Junior Dog: 11’.1” – 15’11”, Senior Dog: 16’.0 – 22’.11”, Master Dog: 19’.0” - 22’.11”, and Top Dog: 23’ and up. The four disciplines are: Jump (long distance jumping), Toss (similar to Jump, however the dog must catch the object thrown), Grab (Rookie or Pro, when a bumper is suspended on a rig over the pool), Lure (timed swimming race where the dog chaises a Lure in the wa-

ter). Activates at Avalon Ranch include Dog Diving and Swimming (private and group classes), Agility (obstacle course for dogs), Sport Scent Detection (competition for dogs to locate and alert when a scent is detected in box, vehicle and room searches), Pulling Sports (Bikejoring, Scooter, Canicross, Dog Sledding, Carting), K9 Sport Obedience (obedience that will allow easy transition into K9 sports), and Grooming (full groom, wash, trim and nails). Free camp at Calvary Pentecostal Church tlepack@metroland.com

It’s a jungle out there! And campers are about to discover all of the jungle and animal themes in the Bible at a free summer camp Aug. 12 to 14. Calvary Pentecostal Church is offering a free Jungle Safari Vacation Bible School (VBS) at the church located at 56 Wrangler St. in Renfrew. The camp is for youth ages five to 12 and runs Friday night from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. The camp is limited to 90 kids and people can register right up until the day of the camp. Pastor Peter Snow is inviting everyone in the community to come out. “Anybody from the community is welcome,” said Snow. “They will have a wonderful time. There will be singing, games, crafts and prizes.” Snow says holding it over the weekend is different than traditional VBS. “We will end on Sunday and there will be a barbecue with bouncy castles. All of the children and adults are invited,” said Snow. “It will be a chance for the parents to see what the kids have done and the kids will be doing a presentation.” On Sunday there will also be draws for an 18-speed bike - a Raleigh Scooter - and more.

Anybody from the community is welcome. They will have a wonderful time. There will be singing, games, crafts and prizes.

Helping you is what we do.

PETER SNOW

gerryoneil@royallepage.ca

Snow is going to call all of the parents to personally invite them to the Sunday conclusion of the VBS. “To have the parents here for a VBS service is an unprecedented approach to promoting and conducting a VBS,” said Snow. Little Ray’s Reptiles will be on hand to do a performance from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday to complement the jungle theme. “The church will be decorated like a jungle, there will be a waterfall and stuffed animals,” said Snow. On the spiritual side he says they will use the jungle theme to present the gospel. “There are lots of animals in the Old Testament. In the creation story God creates the animals, then Noah’s Ark,” said Snow. “Animals will be used to portray different stories in the Bible.” To pre-register for the camp, call the church at 613-432-6785 or fill out a form at the church, at 56 Wrangler St. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Fossil fun at Bonnechere Museum July 23 Saturday July 23 is sure to be filled with summer fun at the Bonnechere Museum. The day begins with our second Fossil Hunt of the year, led by ‘Caveman’ Chris Hinsperger of the Bonnechere Caves, and his colleague David Bell. Discover fossils from marine animals in the Ordovician time period, such as Crinoids and Cephalopods. The Fossil Hunt begins at the museum at 10 a.m., it’s sure to be a fantastic exploration. Or, if the Fossil Hunt isn’t really your thing, come and take a guided Geo-Heritage trail tour at 1:30 p.m. We will explore an old railway bed, an abandoned quarry and a lime-

stone trench. You will also see rock formations and discover fossils in an exposed bed of limestone. This walk features a scenic walk along the Bonnechere River with a lookout and five caves. The museum’s annual 50/50 lottery is underway.

Eganville’s Melissa Bishop earns her spot at the Rio Olympics Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

The Ottawa Valley will have a special reason to tune into the Rio Summer Olympics. Eganville’s Melissa Bishop has made the Canadian Olympic team and will be competing in the 800m on Aug. 17 and 18, and hopefully in the final on Aug. 20. The 27-year-old also competed in the 2012 Olympics and is looking forward to the games.. “It’s a huge honour to wear the maple leaf and represent Canada,” said Bishop. “You want to do well. Every time I get the uniform it is something special.” Bishop won the Canadian 800m Championship on July 10 in Edmonton with a recording breaking time of 1:59:32. The previous Canadian record was 1:59:46. Then on Friday, she broke her own Canadian record in the 800m at the TrackTown Classic with a time of 1:57:52. “It’s all been very exciting, I don’t think I have come down from the high,” said Bishop. She had a number of family members supporting her during the Canadian finals. “It was nice to have my family there,” said Bishop. “It’s exciting for them too because they have witnessed me on every high and low

on this journey.” She is very grateful for them being there. “A big thank you to them, I really appreciate all their support.” She also wants to send a thank you out to all of her fans in the Ottawa Valley. “I have seen all of the messages on social media and I do appreciate all of the support.” She knows the Valley is behind her and knows they will be cheering her on. “I can’t wait to see the Ottawa Valley spirit,” said Bishop. “In 2012 it was something else.” RELIEF

She is relieved she has secured her spot on Team Canada. “I was so focused on the national championship because nothing was set in stone until I won that race and punched that ticket,” said Bishop. The final race didn’t go exactly how she thought it would. “I hadn’t planned for such a fast race,” said Bishop. “My coach (Dennis Fairall) had set out a strict race plan. It was a controlled race, I was calm, having fun and enjoying the opportunity.” Her coach has progressive supranuclear palsy, a degenerative condition that has no cure.

“He will be in Rio with me,” said Bishop. “His disease is affecting his balance and his speech. We still talk on a daily basis and we are adjusting.” She hasn’t finalized her training plans with Fairall just yet. She is still out West and will be meeting with him when she arrives back in Windsor. She is focused on her main goal. “If I can make the final, anything can happen,” said Bishop. “I just need to perform my best that day.” She says she is aware of a lot of the concerns surrounding the Rio games, including the Zika virus. “It is a concern, my fiancé and I spoke with the team doctor and we are taking all of the necessary precautions, my clothes will be treated in repellent and we will be carrying DEET,” said Bishop. But she is determined to go to the Olympics. “They don’t want me to give this up, it is the epitome of why we train,” said Bishop. “I don’t want to give up the opportunity to represent my country when we can take every precaution.” CLAUS ANDERSON/ATHLETICS CANADA Bishop is building on her success Melissa Bishop is ready for the Olympics. She will be competing in the from last year when she won gold 800m on Aug. 17 and Aug. 18, with the hope of the final on Aug. 20. in the 800m at the Pan American Games in Toronto and she also medal, breaking a 14-year-old re- with a time of 1:57:52. At the 2012 Olympics she finwent to the IAAF World Cham- cord to become the first Canadian pionships where she won the silver to go below one minute, 58 seconds ished in 30th place.

Brown has just finished his first year at Augusta University (AU), on half scholarship playing for the AU men’s golf team. The Renfrew Collegiate Institute alumnus is studying communications at AU after graduating from Wallace College, where he was also on scholarship, with a bachelor of science. In 2014 he was the National Junior College Athletic Association champion as the individual medalist. In 2014, Wallace State’s golf team was one of the best as they captured its 11th state championship and were the runners up at the national tournament. The AU website says Brown “played sparingly in his first year as a Jaguar, competed in four tournaments and logged 11 rounds, posted a 78.82 stroke average, low round was 72 and he shot par or better once.” “I played well, but I didn’t win any big tournaments,” said Brown who is back home in Renfrew for the summer. “I had an OK year. I didn’t play as well as I wanted. Just being there was a good experience and I am excited to go back.” The highlight of his year was a chance to play at Augusta National Golf Club. The school’s booster club sends the team to the Masters course once a year. “It was a dream come true. It’s what you see on television,” said Brown. “It does not give it justice, it’s way more special than you can believe, it’s like a golfer’s Disneyland.” He finished the round at the famous course with a 79 and his favourite hole was the infamous hole 12, at which he made par.

Masters you get a locker,” explained Brown. “Normally no one else can go in there.” He says it wasn’t as big as he had expected it to be. “You feel like you had to be somebody to be in there,” said Brown. Although most people see the Master’ green jacket presented on television there is also a special piece of hardware. “We walked around and saw the Masters trophy!” He knows he will remember this experience for the rest of his life. “It’s one of those things I will be able to look back on,” said Brown. “In 50 years I will be watching television saying I had par on that hole.” The team didn’t make it to the national finals and he admits there is a lot of pressure on the 10-person golf team. “There’s no football team there, we are like the football team,” said Brown. “There is more of a spotlight on our team.” He says Augusta, the TIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND town, is very nice and reThe highlight of the year for Cooper Brown minds him of Ottawa. was the chance to play at Augusta National “It’s a lot bigger than I thought, there are four or Golf Club. five golf courses and lots “It amazed me. Plenty of good news at Dragonfly Golf Links Bill Rainboth

Dragonfly Golf LInks

So much good news from this past week – where to start? Let’s start with a rainy Saturday July 9, when the morning golf conditions were less than ideal.] Dragonfly Golf Links was honoured to host Luke and Mirian Ferguson (Delgado) and 150 of their guests for what turned out to be a beautiful wedding ceremony and reception. Love was in the air and the sun did finally break through later into the evening. Best wishes to the newlyweds from all of us here at Dragonfly, and profound thanks for trusting us with your big day. Last Sunday, our men’s team represented Dragonfly at the OVGA Intersectionals. They took on the host club from Nationview, as well as Lombard Glen and Roanoke Golf Clubs. At the end of the day Dragonfly was crowned champions of K Division and so they will be moving up for the second year in a row to take on tougher opponents in J Division in 2017. Congrats to Jack Quinn, Kris Barrie, Mike Riopelle, Jesse Riopelle, Chad

Thompson, James Miller, Patrick Neville, Chris McClure, Billy Karras, Michel Levesque and Jonah O’Connor. Here at Dragonfly, we are all quite proud of how the course has grown into a beautiful golf course while growing the member and client base, all with putting a premium on an exceptional level of customer service. None of this happens without an owner who is committed to improving his course’s product on a yearly basis. For the last nine years, Dragonfly owner Terry McLaughlin and his construction company, Terlin Construction, have hosted an annual charity tournament with proceeds going to CHEO. This year, Dragonfly hosted the event on Thursday July 14 and added the Children’s Aid Foundation of Ottawa to her list of worthy recipients. The day’s weather was hot and wet but spirits were cool and light as the event raised more than $50,000 – almost double what it did the year previous! Last week was one of the hottest on record. Tuesday and Wednesday night Men’s League kept the Dragonfly cart girl hopping. Tuesday’s A flight winners was

the “always dangerous” Ray’s Flowers. The Renfrew Firefighters had no problem fighting off the fiery competition capturing B flight, and let’s “sing the praises” to the Music Men, who composed a beautiful round of to win C flight. Closest to the pin winners were Curtis Thompson on #5, and on Bob (Bubba) Dykeman on #7. It wouldn’t be a proper Wednesday night unless a Riopelle won something, and so this week Jesse Riopelle was closest to the pin on #5, and Kean Hunt was hunting for his second ace in less than a week and settled for closest to the pin on #7 instead. Renfrew Pizzaria swallowed up A flight, and the Mountain Men found themselves at the summit of C flight. On Thursday team Seriously (?) were once again crowned champs of A Division with a scorching score of 31. Top Tees took B Division with an impressive 32. Closest to the pin winners were Jen Lane who let her tee shot inches from a hole in one on #5, and Colleen Wall was the nights sharp shooter on #7. Another busy, and great week in the books at Dragonfly. Congrats to all.

New addition to church pew was very entertaining Mary Cook’s Memories BY MARY COOK

nodded in her direction, but the old woman either had no desire to be friendly, or there was something wrong with her eyesight as well. It looked like someone had just propped her in the seat. In fact, I wondered if that was what had happened, and I wished at once, that we had been there to see her come in. PERFUME SIGN

Emerson hissed he thought she may have passed away. Mother poked him on the knee to hush him up. But then she opened her purse to take out a little lacy hanky, and a strong whiff of lavender perfume floated over the pew causing Emerson to raise his hand to his mouth and let out a loud gagging cough. He wasn’t too fond of perfume. But at least it proved the old lady was still alive.

And then Mother, to my horror, beamed at me after I said my thanks, and told me to go and put it in the offering plate at the front of the church. I couldn’t believe my ears! The old woman was beaming at me, and I knew I had to do what Mother said, and hand over the nickel. A whole nickel! With a heavy heart I went up to the plate and dropped it in. It was the fastest money I had ever earned, and it was the shortest time I had ever had a nickel in my possession! Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? blast for the last hymn. I must say it startled me too, and for the first time, the old lady looked over at us, and issued what passed for a smile. When the service was over, Mother reached across and extended a hand. Then the old lady opened her purse again, and another whiff of lavender settled around us. She took a nickel out of her purse and handed it to me, and said it was for being so good in church. I was dumbfounded, and Emerson pushed in beside me, but there was no more money in the offing.

Her skin looked like it had been drawn tightly across her face, and there was no doubt about it, she was going to give me plenty to think about during the long service, and I was secretly delighted, I confess, that she had lost her hearing and had to move up to the front of the church. I soon realized the sinfulness of my thoughts, and asked a quick forgiveness from God for harbouring such ideas. I had no idea what the minister was talking about that day. I was too engrossed in the old lady in the seat beside us. It wasn’t long before she started to doze off and yet she never moved a fraction of an inch in the pew. But her eyelids slipped down, fluttered open, and then closed again for good. Her eyes looked exactly like a chicken that had fallen asleep in the hot sun; almost transparent, with no eyelashes, and white as the driven snow. She flew awake when the organist let out a

Our family sat in the pew next to the very front of the church, which I always thought was a shame because I could never see a thing going on behind me. Mother forbade us to turn around in our seats, and my sister Audrey said the whole back of the church could fall in behind us, and Mother would expect us to keep our eyes peeled straight ahead. I thought the church service long and boring. The time dragged by, and even though Audrey said it was a real sin to let my mind wander away from what the minister was saying, I had no idea what he was talking about. And so it was with more than a bit of joy the day a very elderly lady moved from the back to the other end of our pew. Mother said she had lost a lot of her hearing, and through necessity had to move closer to the minister. My brother Emerson said she didn’t know how lucky she was, whatever that meant. I hardly knew the old woman, but I was delighted she was close at hand, because now I had something else to occupy my mind. That first Sunday, she was already sitting in her seat by the time we piled in beside her. The seats curved, so I had no trouble looking over in her direction and giving her a good going over. She was like a little bird…a wren...or maybe a robin. She sat with her hands folded in her lap on top of her opened Bible. Mother

CARD OF THANKS

THANK YOU On behalf of my family and myself, we would like to thank you so very much for everything that so many of you did for us at the time of my brother; Derek Barr’s passing on March 13, 2016. My family was somewhat overwhelmed with all of the flowers, cards, Mass cards, food, visits to the funeral home, and even the lovely messages left on my voicemail. It was so very kind and generous of you and very much appreciated! To my Pastor, Father John Burchat, and my church family, I love and appreciate you all so very much. Thank you, Andre Pilon for taking care of everything so beautifully (as always) for us. Gina, the obituary cards were sooo Derek “Go Giants Go!” Thank you! Steve, the video couldn’t have been more perfect. Wayne, Pat, and Rita… having you there in Ottawa was lovely! Thank you! I knew my family would be blessed and well taken care of in such a “homey” atmosphere at such a difficult time. The name, Pilon Family Funeral Home, speaks volumes not just in words but in actions as well! Derek would have been so very pleased, appreciative, and touched by all the love and care that went into his celebration of life. A very special “Thank You” to my Dear Friend, Joanne McLaren, for her accompaniment on piano as I had the privilege to sing at Derek’s service. Over and over again, we heard of all of the amazing ways in which Derek touched so many people in his 54 years of life. Even the week before he died, Derek continued to thank God for his countless blessings. His biggest blessing ever, which he never, ever stopped thanking God for, was his wife Darlene. Time and time again, he professed that God had sent him an angel. His angel as he called her had completely and forever changed his life. Derek also had been blessed with 3 stepchildren and 2 grandchildren who loved him as much as he loved them. I believe faith happens when we close our eyes and open our hearts. That is exactly what happened for Derek!!! I am so grateful to God for what He taught me through my brother in his last week before he went home to the Lord. What an amazing and humbling experience for me! Love, Roxanne God Bless You All! Good people will be remembered as a blessing. ~ Proverbs 10:7

Martin (Scotty) Paton 1923-2016 Martin passed away on July 14, at the Civic Hospital. He was 92. He was living at the Lord Landsdowne residence in Ottawa where he received exceptional care. Martin emigrated from Glasgow Scotland in 1947 and embraced everything about Canada especially fishing, hunting, golf and camping. He lived in Renfrew most of his adult life and was a proud member of the Renfrew Golf Club and the Masonic Lodge. Martin was married to Marie Marsters (d2000) and then Edna Burgess (separated). Martin is survived by his sons Richard (Julia) and William (Feng Min) and their children Michael (Jade) and their child Malachi as well as Jasmine (David) and granddaughter A Xi. His other son, Bruce died in 2002. Martin always regarded the Burgess children as part of his family-Gail, Billy, Helen, Murray and their children Robbie, Andrew, Sandi and Terri. Martin was a hardworking, responsible, caring and dedicated father and grandparent and a contributor to the community of Renfrew. As a Scotsman he knew how to laugh, enjoy a wee dram of scotch, and share a story with friends. He was always ready to support friends, family and those who worked with him. He loved Canada but he left part of his soul in Scotland and always had a passion for the Glasgow Rangers soccer team. He will be missed dearly and his legacy will remain in the DNA of the family forever. The Celebration of Life will be at the McPhail and Perkins funeral home at 85 Munroe East in Renfrew at 12:30 Friday, July 22. All those who wish to pay their respects are welcome.
