Donaldson was presented the Governor General’s Sov- Donaldson, moments before the presentation. “I am happy to be here in my community where I have served and given back and I am so proud.” The 89-year-old has volunteered with the Bonnechere Manor for 31 years starting with the gift shop to raise money, then became involved with palliative care, music program, the foundation and more. “I’ve pretty well served in almost every aspect,” said Donaldson. Lions Club looks to pass the torch on parade TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The Renfrew Lions Club is not organizing the 2017 Santa Claus Parade in Renfrew. Renfrew council was notified July 18 when they were reviewing the economic development and tourism committee minutes from its June 26 meeting. The report states “Santa Claus Parade Update: Committee discussed the letter received from the Lions Club notifying the town that they will no longer be organizing the Santa Claus Parade beginning 2017.” Coun. Andrew Evans, who does not sit on the committee questioned the state of the long-standing parade. “It’s a surprise to me and you may not be able to help, what about the Santa Claus parade update?” Mayor Don Eady answered the question. “The Lions Club will not be doing the Santa Claus parade. They have given me a package, to be honest I haven’t gone through it yet, we will hopefully be bringing
that to a meeting soon,” said Eady. “I think we will be fine as of today we don’t have volunteers, hopefully it will still be a go.” Evans noted the Lions club has volunteered to organize the parade for many years and their services have been much appreciated. Renfrew Lions Club president Bob Boyer stressed the club is optimistic that another group will come forward and take over the annual event. The Renfrew Business Improvement Area, for one, has expressed interest. For the last three parades the Lions have been getting “exceptional” help from the Templar Knights motorcycle club. The Lions Club is an aging group and membership is declining, said Boyer, and organizing the parade is a huge task. “It was a difficult decision to make but it was one we felt we had to,” he said. Club members will certainly be available to help the new organizers with whatever they need, Boyer added. Anyone interested in getting involved can email him at boboyer@ sympatico.ca .

Renfrew approves new hotel market study costing $15,264 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
If you build it, they will come. But, what are the requirements and needs for a new hotel in Renfrew? Council is seeking out just that with a new hotel study. On July 18, Renfrew council waived the requirement of purchasing and tendering policy, and awarded the professional consulting services for a hotel market student to CBRE Hotels for a cost of $15,264. Director of parks and recreation Kevin Hill addressed council, noting a hotel market study has been discussed on many occasions over the years. In putting together a report for options for recreation upgrades, he reached out to one of the firms he had been involved with in the past. “During those discussions, I asked them to submit a proposal for us to consider here at this table for the Town of Renfrew … I strongly recommend the principal we would be working with during this project. I have worked with them in the past … and I feel confident in their abilities,” said Hill. “That is why I am suggesting and recommending to council that they waive the requirement for purchasing and tendering policy, and award the professional consulting services to CBRE Hotels.” Coun. Kate Windle said she was tickled pink to see this being done. “We have some excellent facilities, but it is not enough. If we can get a new hotel in the Town of Renfrew, I think that’s going to go a long way to bringing more visitors and events in. So, well done,” said Windle. Reeve Peter Emon noted one common comment after the Saw Tech Expo. “Some of the vendors and visitors had to stay in Ottawa, because there wasn’t enough accommodations in the area and they were expecting
different styles, and that was the most common thing,” said Emon. “Looking to bring in more activities like Saw Tech, that’s always the first question. The venue works for them, but they don’t want to be busing people in. That will be a challenge if we want to bring in more events.” Emon said that hoteliers want information in a nice package before they build a hotel. “They want lots of information before they invest $10 million in putting up a facility. They want to make sure the area can support it and what goes along with that,” said Emon. Coun. Evans apologized for being a stickler when it came to money. “Do the box stores that move into town request feasibility studies paid for by the towns?” Evans asked. “I can’t see paying (for a study) that will be handed over to, say, Best Western or the Marriott. Did our two other franchises do the same when they moved into town?” Coun. Arlene Jamieson, who is also the chair of the economic development and tourism committee that reviewed the proposal on July 5, said this is the study hotels are looking for. “The first thing out of their mouth is they will say, ‘Have you done a feasibility study?’ They want to make sure they are going to get the turnaround, and money back, just like everyone else. It’s different than a box store,” said Jamieson. “Its good for us, because it shows we are interested and we are really making an effort here, because there are so many other places that are reaching out for those accommodators.” Mayor Don Eady called it one of the most important studies the town could do. “It will be sent out to three or four chains,” said Eady. “This is what they look at in order to make a decisions. It’s very important and the return could be astronomical. It is very, very important we do this and do it right.” The study is set to start immediately for six weeks. Once it is complete, it will become property of the town.

On July 11, the Town of Renfrew passed its 2017 tax rate bylaw at a special council meeting, with the final instalments due Aug. 31 and Oct. 27. However, at the council meeting on July 18, changes were made to the due dates. The 2017 residential tax rate is comprised of three different rates: town at .00930552, county at .00358971 and education at .00179000, for a total of .01468523. To figure out an individual tax rate, the total would be multiplied by the house assessment. “Residential taxes will increase by $55.13 per $100,000 of assessment, or 3.9 per cent (for the average homeowner),” said Town of Renfrew treasurer Keray O’Reilly. There is still a holdup on the final due dates because of a new classification. “The County of Renfrew has to set a tax ratio and tax rates for the new multi-residential classification, and then all 17 lower tier municipalities in the county have to confirm their data in Online Property Tax Analysis before we can print our tax bills,” said O’Reilly. On July 18, council amended the bylaw to
remove the reference to the due dates for instalments three and four. “We are required to give 21 days notice, but the town normally gives six weeks,” said O’Reilly. “Most likely, they will be due in midSeptember and at the end of October.” The town will still meet the required notice and the holdup will not affect its cash flow. Christmas in July On July 18, council approved a request from the Downtown Renfrew Business Improvement Area to close part of Railway Avenue and use Low Square for the Christmas in July shopping event on July 29. They are also bringing forward some of their Canada Day celebrations that were rained out on June 30. Sign review Coun. Andrew Evans opposed a proposed review of the sign bylaw, but it was approved by council to go ahead. Evans asked if it really needed to be fixed and was concerned with censorship. Town planner Ivan Burton said a majority of the issues were safety-related. Coun. Arlene Jamieson noted that the planning committee has received safety complaints, as signs were impeding pedestrians on sidewalks.
Suspects charged in Renfrew home invasion on Highway 60 Several people are facing charges after three suspects forced their way into an apartment and robbed a victim. Police were called to the scene on Highway 60 in Renfrew on Sunday, July 23 shortly after 6 a.m. The victim reported a male and two females forced their way into the apartment in the early morning hours, threatened the occupants and stole several items. The suspects have been identified and charges are pending. Const. Tina Hunt is leading the investigation. In other police news, the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 275 calls for service during the past week. Domestic Violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated 12 domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with uttering a threat, one male was charged with two counts of uttering a threat, and one male was charged with forcible confinement, three counts of assault and six counts of domestic mischief. No other criminal offences took place. Break and Enter A garage on Bell Street in Arnprior was entered sometime in the past two weeks. An Xbox One game system and approximately 15 Nintendo 64 games were stolen. There was no sign of forced entry and there are no suspects. Const. Mark Cranford is investigating.
Renfrew County Crime Stoppers needs pet pics Pembroke Renfrew County Crime Stoppers is currently in the planning stages for their 11th annual Crime Stoppers Cash Calendar. The program is looking for photographs of pets and service animals taken within Renfrew County to put in the calendar. Photographs are needed to represent all of Renfrew County, and for each season. The public is invited to submit photos for the calendar, with a fast-approaching deadline of Aug. 8. Photographs need to be of high quality (minimum 300 dpi) and in landscape format for inclusion in the calendar. Please include the name of the pet or service animal, and where in Renfrew County they reside or work. Please submit photos to Tina Spurrell at tinaspurrell@ yahoo.com or call her at 613-401-4709 if you have any questions. All photos must be submitted electronically. The calendar is a fundraiser for Crime Stoppers, and as a result, there will be no financial compensation for the photographs that are chosen. 2,500 calendars will be produced and will go on sale for $20 each. People who purchase the calendar are entered into a daily draw for prizes ranging from $25 to $1,000. Winners’ names are put back into the draw, so they can win more than once during the year. Not-for-profit organizations can assist with sales of the calendars. They can receive $5 for each calendar they sell. For more information — or if you are a not-for-profit organization looking for a no risk, no cost fundraiser — visit the Crime Stoppers website at www.valleytips.ca, or contact Tina Spurrell at 613 401-4709 or tinaspurrell@yahoo. com.
Thefts Several thefts from unlocked vehicles occurred during the past week. Stolen property includes a ring, loose change, sunglasses, ownership and insurance cards, tools, an emergency kit and a set of tires on rims from the back of a pick-up truck. Vehicle owners are encouraged to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables.
Marine Patrols The OPP marine unit has been busy on area waterways ensuring people are obeying the law regarding equipment, licencing and alcohol on boats. Three people were charged last week for having open alcohol on a boat, and one person was charged with not having enough life jackets on board for all passengers.

RVH pleased with funding for infrastructure With Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care (MOHLTC) approval of an Exceptional Circumstances Project (ECP) Grant, Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) will receive an injection of up to $2.46 million for repairs and upgrades. This funding is additional to $263,946 in one-time funding through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund (HIRF) program, bringing the total to $2,723,946 for the 2017—18 fiscal year, a substantial increase over 2016—17 funding of $441,319. “This request/positioning has been a real focus of our Senior Management team over the past number of years. lars,” says Randy Penney, RVH President & CEO. RVH’s application totalled just over $8 million for physical plant upgrades. The submission included elevator replacements, air handling units, chilled water plant replacement, boiler plant replacement, exterior windows, and generator replacement — items that are aged or nearing the end of their service lifetime. The boiler project, estimated at $1.985 million, has already started and will be completed during the nonheating months. “This ongoing investment in our hospital facility will address critical needs in infrastructure and ensure that RVH is able to continue providing care in a safe and efficient environment. I would like to thank the MOHLTC,” adds Penney. The hospital must meet the project completion deadline and reporting requirements set out by the ministry.

Donaldson epitome of kindness From page 2
According to the Governor General’s website, the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers is an official Canadian honour. The medal incorporates and replaces the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award, created in 1995. The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields. Coun. Kate Windle nominated Donaldson for the award and told the large audience of friends and family that she was very fortunate to receive Caring Canadian award the Volunteer Medal as well. “When the Governor General gave it to me, he said, ‘Do you know anyone else who would qualify for this?’ and Eleanor’s smiling face came to me right away,” said Windle. In the nomination letter, Windle says Donaldson is the epitome of kindness. She was named Renfrew Citizen of
the Year in 2009 and has also volunteered over the years with Meals on Wheels, the Canadian Federation of University Women, her church and more. Mayor Don Eady said it was an absolute honour to make the presentation to her. “It takes people like you to make our community,” said Eady. Donaldson has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of New Brunswick, taught at Renfrew Collegiate Institute in Renfrew and calls herself an import. “I’m a Maritimer. This is a very close-knit community a family (in Renfrew) and I realized right from beginning you were going to have to reach out if you were going to be part of this community, so I did,” said Donaldson. “When you do something that you love to do and every day you go, there is always something new and challenging and rewarding so it makes it all worthwhile.”

Spotting fakes We shouldn’t always be offended when the cashier takes a few seconds to check the bill he or she was just handed at the checkout. As much as the newer Canadian polymer currency is more elaborate than its previous paper forms, the issue of counterfeit notes has not gone away even with the safeguards taken by the Bank of Canada. A recent OPP release cites an RCMP report that indicates there were more than 17,500 confirmed counterfeit Canadian bank notes passed in 2016; almost 4,000 were passed in Ontario. That might be a drop in the bucket given $75 billion worth of Canadian bank notes are in circulation, but no one wants to lose out because of counterfeit money. The OPP note that a good counterfeit will look like the real thing, but it might only take a few seconds to spot a fake when checking the safety features (such as feeling the raised ink on the words Bank of Canada on a $5-dollar note, or looking at the metallic building and
seeing it change colour when the bill is tilted). The aforementioned security features can be viewed online at bankofcanada.ca. Cash handlers are advised to set aside any suspicious notes and jot down any information about the circumstances by which the notes were obtained. Provide the suspicious currency to police and request a receipt, so that genuine notes can be returned. Although the person might be trying to pass a counterfeit bank note, he or she might not be aware that the bill is fake and is an unwitting victim of crime, according to the OPP. Retailers are reminded that counterfeit notes are more likely to be passed during busy periods and to be wary of customers who want to pay with much higher denominations of bills than needed. “Cash handlers must ensure their own safety first,” the release states. So-called funny money is no laughing matter when you’re the one who is out of pocket.
What a wonderful world To the editor:
This is a special note of thanks to the people in the general vicinity of Our Lady of Fatima School. So very many of you have given me words of encouragement and extended to me the support I needed so desperately at times during my wife’s sickness. She was in Bonnechere Manor from November 2012 until her death on June 28 of this year. I am the man on the bike. All of my immediate neighbours are surrounding me with cards and flowers and words of kindness. I feel so blessed to be living in such a caring and peaceful community. As I go about doing my business in town I am amazed at the way people
reach out to me with love and support. On the evening of the day of the funeral I met a grandma with her little girl who wanted to talk and reached out her little arms to me, I thought of the song ‘What a Wonderful World.’ Fernie and I begun our journey in 1952, we met at Castleford in July of that year. It is most amazing how the earthly wishes is ending here. We have had a most wonderful life together, she was an incredible woman. Again, my heartfelt thanks for all of your support. MidSummer HerbFest in White Lake July 30 To the editor:
The ‘Annual Midsummer HerbFest’ is being presented on Sunday, July 30 from 9 a.m. — 5 p.m. rain or shine at Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens in beautiful White Lake. Admission is $2 per person or $5 per family. ‘MidSummer HerbFest’ is the 22nd annual celebration of growing and using herbs to help develop healthy lifestyles. HerbFest has moved from the Almonte vicinity. This is our second year of celebrating MidSummer HerbFest at Waba Cottage Museum
and Gardens. Our goal is to generate enthusiasm for the roles that herbs play in our lives. Activities will include cookoffs, vendors, displays, demonstrations, music, craft, food kiosks and children’s activities. This event is being presented by the Ottawa Valley Herb Association in partnership with the Township of McNab/Braeside. We’re holding MidSummer HerbFest at Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens. This is our south coast park. It is nestled in eight acres of lovely gardens and five museum buildings on the shores
of scenic White Lake. The park offers boat launch access to White Lake and features a cool shady maple grove with picnic tables. As a historic site, this is where the unstoppable and irascible Scottish Clan Chief Archibald McNab treated settlers like feudal serfs for almost 20 years. The museum is open seasonal hours and pays tribute to the enduring patience of the settler’s as well as Archibald’s reign of error.” Parking is being arranged with a free shuttle that will be available from a secondary parking lot. From the Renfrew Archives: Renfrew Junction HERITAGE RENFREW
The Station at Renfrew Junction stood at the intersection of two important and historic railway lines - The CN from Ottawa and the K&P from Kingston. For a long time the CN provided the only route of transportation for the whole country in the upper parts of Renfrew County and beyond and the K&P did the same thing for the country between Renfrew and Kingston. For years there used to be two passenger trains a day over each line. Freight traffic was heavy, especially on the CN where trains of 40 cars were not unusual. An agent was kept at Renfrew Junction mainly to operate the semaphores to protect the crossing for which ever train had the right of way. The CN, or the Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound as it was originally named, was built in the early 1890s by the lumber baron, J R Booth, primarily to great timber limits near the headwaters of the Madawaska and beyond. By 1896 he had built the line through to Depot Harbour on Georgian Bay. The K&P had been opened into Renfrew about 10 years earlier. Sections of both lines had been built with M J O’Brien as construction contractor. ln partnership with Chisholm and MacDonald he had built a long stretch of the K&P through Calabogie and in partnership with O’Neil and Ferguson he had built a section of the railroad through Barry’s Bay for J R

Ontario Festival of Small Halls announces energetic lineup The Ontario Festival of Small Halls is revealing the internationally-renowned musicians who will be raising the rafters with incredible sound in cherished rural community spaces this fall. The recently announced lineup will see the Festival of Small Halls ignite local stages across eastern Ontario and the Ottawa Valley from Sept. 14 to Oct. 1 with a mix of big-name familiar faces and boundary- pushing roots, folk, pop, soul and bluegrass-inspired musical acts. Now in its fourth year, the festival is again expanding its scope to include more than 30 unique gathering spaces with history and heart. General manager Kelly Symes said this year’s lineup will include some well-known names in Canadian music, while also showcasing emerging artists who will be new to rural Ontario. “This time around, we selected artists based on their captivating live performance, their stage presence and the ability to connect with their audiences,” she said. Some of the artists include Ashley MacIsaac, a household name in Cape Breton fiddling, as well as Halifax’s Jenn Grant, Charlottetown’s Rose Cousins and Montreal’s Leif Vollebekk. Kingston’s own The Abrams brothers will return after an explosive performance last year. Another festival favourite, Old Man Luedecke, who performed in the festival’s inaugural year, will return after recently taking home the 2017 East Coast Music Award
for Album of the Year. The Festival of Small Halls continues to offer a unique concert experience: seeing your favourite artist in a setting which allows you to relish the music and connect with local community. Local author to host Great Turtle Island book launch Aug. 3 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland
Deirdre McCabe-Berardi’s summer adventures include Superman, Olympic swimming lessons, Daisy Days; it’s the stuff great books are made of. McCabe-Berardi released her first book, Great Turtle Island, on June 27 and now has a book launch at the Arnprior Public Library set for Aug. 3 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The book is based on her life growing up on Mackinac Island and the unique experiences she and her brother go through. “I think they would fine they would relate to it,” said McCabe-Berardi as to why people she pick up a copy of the book. “It’s funny and a whole mishmash, lots of adventures of people growing up.” McCabe-Berardi moved to Arnprior in 1997 from Sault Ste. Marie. She obtained her teaching degree from the University of Ottawa and has also earned her bachelor of sociology degree. She has taught at various levels in the community at Renfrew Collegiate Intermediate School, Central and Queen Elizabeth Public Schools and in Arnprior at AJ Charbonneau Public School, Walter Zadow Public School and McNab Public School. Writing is in her blood as her father
was a show business biography and profiled Charlie Chaplin, James Cagney and more. “I guess I kind of got it from him; he was a teacher too,” said McCabeBerardi. McCabe-Berardi was born in New York and grew up in Michigan. She has dual citizenship and received her Canadian citizenship in 2000. This is her first book, a fiction novel, based on her life growing up on Mackinac Island, in Lake Huron/Michigan, which is just under 10 square kilometres. The book started with an idea after a class reunion on the island in 2012 and she remembers she was encouraged to write about something she knew. “Everyone has a story to tell,” said McCabe-Berardi. She finished the book in 2013 and revised it in 2014. She admits she doubted herself. “I finally said ‘I think I am ready!’” said McCabe-Berardi. She worked with Burnstown Publishing House and the book was released on June 27. “The editor was wonderful,” said McCabe-Berardi. “It ‘s so cool (to have it published), it’s a lot of hard work and now I have something to leave for my sons.” The book focuses on siblings Au-
rora and Blake, who have a typical childhood on the mainland but have summer adventures on Great Turtle Island. “It’s about things girls go through in life — her coming of age and dating boys,” said McCabe-Berardi. The island itself has been the set to a number of popular movies including Somewhere in Time, starring actor Christopher Reeve. “My brother and I were extras in the movie,” she says as she holds up a
photo of her and Reeve. One of the chapters in the book is called Superman, dedicated to that unique experience. There is another real-life antidote of what her brother did to get out of swimming lessons: the cover shows them getting ready for Daisy Days (she is dressed as a tap dancer and her brother as a magician) and more. She is already working on her next book, a historical fiction prequel focusing on her mother’s journey from
Latvia during the Second World War to the United States. “I feel that I need to share how hard a person’s life can be bit still be grateful for living each day to the fullest, she said always learn,” said McCabeBerardi. Great Turtle Island is 216 pages and costs $25. To purchase it, contact the author at deirdreberardi@gmail.com or 613-623-2698, or visit www.burnstownpublishing.com/product/greatturtle-island.

Heritage Renfrew celebrates HERITAGE RENFREW
Heritage Renfrew celebrated their 43rd anniversary as Canada celebrated its 150th. Renfrew County fiddlers with the joined effort of other musicians and fiddlers took the stage at the Royal Canada Legion on June 15. Square dances were called and great music and song was heard. Mayor Don Eady and the town historian, Olga Lewis, attended in support of the event. A silent auction and 50/50 draw was held. New members were signed up and books of his-
tory content were sold. On display were many samples of wool, made in late 1800s from the Renfrew Woolen Mill. Through the evening a visual display showed non-stop pictures from Renfrew’s past. Cupcakes and beverage were served to everyone. Website: www.heritagerenfrew.ca. For information contact: info@HeritageRenfrew.ca. Located at: 770 Gibbons Rd., Renfrew, behind the Canadian Tire. Hours of operation, Monday and Wednesday 1 to 3 p.m.

Ella and Tessa Reagan, pictured with mom Ginger, are ready for this Saturday’s Young Entrepreneurs Day at the McNab/Braeside Market on Russett Drive.
Young entrepreneurs get free tables July 28 at McNab/Braeside Market Saturday, July 28 is Young Entrepreneurs Day at the McNab/Braeside Market. Young people 21 years and under are encouraged to book a table at no charge and show off their wares to the community. Ella and Tessa Reagan, along with their mom Ginger, are ready. Ella explains that she loves making bracelets and earnings, then sharing that joy with others. Tessa makes bookmarks as an expression of her love of reading. She was looking for a way to “make a little” money but she “loves sewing with Mom.” Ginger and Tim Reagan encourage this entrepreneurial spirit in their children. “It’s a life skill,” explains Ginger. Certainly, knowing what you love and then understanding how you can make a living from it is something that we all need to experience in life. If you would like to encourage your young entrepreneur and book a free table, contact Rachelle at 613 623-0950.

Motocross mountain
Photos by Derek Dunn/Metroland
Sheri and Chris Kopetoske started KMMX Motocross near Calabogie, one of two tracks in Eastern Ontario, in large part to spend more with time their racer son Collin. They hosted the final series at the Kennelly Mountain track for about 200 riders on the weekend of July 15-16. Below: Riders can get to such great heights that it can seem they jump right into trees. Before KMMX opened three years ago, motocross families drove to Ottawa or, more frequently, to tracks in Toronto, Montreal and beyond.

Don’t worry about the ‘fore’cast at Dragonfly DRAGONFLY GOLF LINKS
Last Monday and Tuesday summarized our Dragonfly golf season to a tee! On Monday there was a 70 per cent chance of precipitation according to the Weather Network, AccuWeather and Environment Canada. A 70 per cent chance of getting wet on the golf course does not sound like a lot of fun and is usually enough to keep even the avid golfer from leaving the friendly shelter of home. Simply put, the “professional forecasters” hurt our bookings in a significant way. We never did get any rain, and the temperature was a pleasant 25 C with skies that were partly cloudy. On Tuesday, our tee sheet featured several more bookings, and we looked forward to a beautiful day with a forecast of only a 10 per cent chance of rain. Great news, as we also had our Men’s League, which is the largest of the four league nights at Dragonfly. It poured rain from 4 to 5 p.m., so I promptly checked my favourite weather sites for an update. None of them indicated any precipitation despite what was going on outside my window! As you may know, I am the proud GM of Dragonfly Golf Links. If my managerial forecasting was as bad as those of the weather experts I would have been out of a job years ago.
August is fast approaching, the course is in fantastic condition, and I encourage you all to get out and enjoy your golf season, regardless of the forecast. Now onto the “sunny” details of our league play from this past week. On Monday night, the Bunker Busters blasted off their first win of the season. Mike Riopelle and Garry Gourley were closest to the pin on #5 and #7. For the second week in a row, Tuesdays’ B flight winners were from Legere Industrial Supplies. Taking A flight was Ray Flowers with the lowest gross score of the night. Closest to the pin were Rob Kimberly and Steve Head on #13 and #18. Opeongo Bowldrome were unbeatable on Wednesday to take B flight, and A flight was won by the Abandoned Cubs with the lowest score of the week. Keith Bilson won closest to the pin on #13, and his son Chris was closest on #18. Ladies Night enjoyed a few more prizes on Thursday night with four closest-to-the-pin winners. Congrats to Crystal Hewitt, Cathy Campbell, Wendy Bowman and Colleen Wall for bringing our par three to its knees! The Senioritas won the tie breaker with Grip it and Sip it to take A flight. Team Seriously won the tie-breaker with the Top Tees to take B flight, and Par-Tee On took C flight for the outright win. Congrats to all ... and see you on the Links!

Renfrew Golf Club’s Carter Jarrett wins under-13 boys championship RENFREW GOLF CLUB
Congratulations to Renfrew Golf Club member Carter Jarrett on his Ottawa City and District Junior Boys under-13 win last Monday and Tuesday. Carter now travels to Toronto to compete in the Ontario Championships on July 31 and Aug 1. A great win for a great, young Renfrew player. And this just in, congratulations to our Junior Intersectional team who finished second at Kanata Lakes on Sunday, which means Renfrew Golf Club (RGC) had the home course advantage in 2018. Up next for our juniors is the defence of the Blakely Cup, here at RGC, on Aug. 9. Thank you to our Renfrew Rotary who held a breakfast golf scramble with us on Saturday. Beautiful weather combined with great auction and silent auction items made the fundraiser a great success. And a great time was had by 21 Smiths Falls members last Monday when they came to RGC for the second leg of our home and home series. All the members could not believe how great of condition our golf course is in. And our ladies thank the Smiths Falls ladies section for hosting us as well on Monday. Our third Friday Frolics of the

season, a French-Canadian Heritage themed event, was won by Mike and Sue Comeau, Robbie Deschamps and Peter Barnes. As first prize for winning, these four now get to set the theme and the game for next month’s event on Aug. 18. In three short months, we’ve grown this member and guest fun nine and dine from 20 or so our first month to 40-plus on Friday and we already have more than 60 signed up for August. Thank you to everyone for participating in all of the RGC social events this season. Next up is our Club Championship, Aug. 4, 5 & 6. It was the Men’s Rec league who finished their two week cycle this week with Rowat Insurance narrowly winning A Flight by one stroke over Schwartz Drywall. Rowat was down by a stroke after the first week but managed to pull out the victory over team Schwartz, who almost won D, C, B and A flights over four consecutive events. B Flight was won by Finnigan’s, who are now moving up to A Flight along with Welch LLP. Deslaurier Cabinets were the big winners in C Flight along with Weapons of Grass Destruction, who are also making their way back up the ranks. Submitted And the Long Shots and Precision Carter Jarrett recently won the boys under-13 championship in Ottawa. Contracting will be in C Flight for at

Weekly prize winners were: Steve Mulvihill, Mike Asselin, Randy Smith and Darrin Topping for July 10 as well as Terry Smith, Richard Barr, Stu Stark and Sean Rouselle for July 17. Tuesday Ladies league results had Julie Bonsor winning by countback over Marg Agnew in A Flight. Cheryl Campbell is finding B Flight to her liking as she picked up another win with the weeks high score of 39.5, with second going to Karen Audette and Kim Vandewouw third. And the crafty lefty Bev Savicky won C Flight (also with 39.5 points) over both Faith Mau and Sue O’Neil. All three hidden hole prizes carried over until next week. And on the men’s side, it was Jamie Aldrich who won A Flight with 22 par points, with new dad Tim O’Connor second and Rob Warren third. Jamey Larone was victorious in B Flight, winning by only half a point over Brad Sammon with Brian Hewitt third. Vic McSheffrey pulled out a win in C Flight with both Harvey Murray and Elio Domenicucci continuing their hot streaks by finishing second and third respectively. And in Super Senior, Bill McAllister’s birdie on hole 9 propelled him to victory over Bill Butson and Don Eady.

These 2 handsome boys are still looking for their forever homes
Bronx is a 2 year old neutered male boxer mix. He is a very energetic and affectionate dog and requires a lot of exercise. Bronx likes other high energy dogs but must be supervised during play as he can get over excited His ideal owner would have experience with large dogs and be willing to do obedience training with Bronx. Bronx would do best in a pet and child free home with an owner that can be, or is willing to learn to be a good, strong leader.
Russ is a 2 year old male, neutered sable German Shepherd. Russ is a happy, people friendly dog and enjoys outdoor pursuits, long walks and practicing his obedience and leash walking skills. Russ has great recall, bonds easily with people, is very food motivated and willing to learn. Although Russ likes to play with other dogs he must be supervised as he can become over excited during rough play. Russ would do best as the only pet in the home. His ideal owner would have large dog experience and be willing to do obedience training with him. He/She would be looking for a companion dog as Russ’s favourite thing in the world is hanging out with his person. Both of these dogs have worked with trainers and VAR is willing to pay for some initial obedience training for them and their new owners to ensure that they transition smoothly to their new home and to enhance the owner/dog bond.

It’s hard to say if it’s the friendly players, the bright room, the many delicious snacks or the high quality of play, but the Renfrew Bridge Club certainly hasn’t seen any summertime drop-off in numbers as 13 full tables of keen players showed up for the July 19 contest. As has been the recent case, the North-South pairs seemed to receive better cards and they were able to score several slams. Board 3 was a particular bright spot as the North-South pairs made 9 slams there. The trend continued, on Board 6 and 4 more slams

Two recent articles (Ontario Farmer & The Agrinews) revealed some startling information on syrup production. 1. Two-thirds of the syrup produced in Ontario is coming from producers with less than 5,000 taps. 2. A producer in Southern Ontario has five tanker trucks delivering sap to his sugar shack. There is certainly no question that the local syrup makers who enter their product in the Renfrew Fair work on less than 5,000 taps; And — as for a delivery system — one 5 gallon pail could be enough! As long as you can produce one 250 mL bottle of syrup you have an entry for the fair. The process should begin with making some maple syrup. Secondly contact the fair office (613-4325331) to arrange for a booklet that will provide all the necessary information for your entry. Please — read the information thoroughly! The classifications for syrup entries this year will come in line with that for all of Ontario.
Gold, Amber and Dark. Please use the colourmeter supplied by the syrup committee when submitting your entry. The maple syrup competition is the only competition at the fair to provide the contestants with a detailed analysis of the judging of their entry. This past syrup season was another weird one — are they all weird now? The well-organized people got in on the early run and then had quite a break before season two. When season two finally arrived, the results were all over the map. There were bushes where the run was quite satisfactory and those where the tree had to be squeezed (hugged) to encourage any flow at all. This brought a whole new definition to “tree hugger”. There were also cases of excessive sediment in some syrup samples which resulted in a number of filterings to gain clarity. The syrup committee looks forward to fair time and welcoming past competitors and is particularly pleased to welcome new entrants to our friendly competition.

Preserving time provided the right ingredients for good memories Just walking past the kitchen door from the outside, you could tell what was going on inside by the sweet smells coming out through the screen. It was preserving time again. It was a sweet smell, and I thought the best place for me to be was out in the swing in the grape arbour. It wasn’t that I didn’t like what was happening in the kitchen, it was because preserving time made the place unbearably hot from the steam coming from the boiling pots on the stove. That day, raspberries were being ‘put down’. We had picked them from deep in the bush, where we went every summer with the cream cans on the stone boat. And they sat in the summer kitchen overnight, and now they were ready to preserve. The berries simmered gently towards the back of the Findlay Oval, and right on the front burner Mother had sealers of every shape and size boiling in the biggest granite pot we owned. The fire had been started by Father before he headed for the barns, and you could feel the heat from every corner of the kitchen. It didn’t take me long to eat my breakfast and head outside. My poor sister Audrey wasn’t so lucky. She was in the stifling kitchen measuring out sugar, making sure there were lids to match the sealers in the boiling pot, and setting out cookie sheets which would hold the bottled preserves until they were ready to move to the swinging shelf in the cellar. I had watched the preserving many times, but always from a distance. Mother was too busy with the job at hand to tell me what chores she wanted done that day, and I was well aware that she and Audrey would be stuck in the steaming kitchen until every last berry was sealed in the jars. Some jars were what I called ‘store bought’, while others had once held pickles or relishes, or even berries put down the year before. I had everything timed perfectly. I could hear, from the opened window looking out into the grape arbour, that Audrey was lifting the jars out of the boiling water and putting them on the cookie sheets. And I knew everything would be in the final stages of preserving, and it would be safe to go into the kitchen again. It amazed me how quickly the steam disappeared once the boiling stopped, and the breeze from the open window and screen door cooled everything down.
Of course, it was still very early in the morning, and the sun was yet to move high into the sky. Soon it would be stifling hot outside, and putting down preserves was well planned to avoid as much as possible the heat of the day. When I peeked in the door, I could see my sister ladling the berries from the big pot into the jars on the kitchen table. And then I saw Mother, with a long fork, pick the lids from the steaming water, and gingerly seal each jar tight. Of course, it was impossible to hit the jar dead on each time, and there was always a bit of preserves running down the outside of a sealer. And so each one had to wipe clean with a wet string dishcloth. And I marveled how Audrey or Mother could handle those hot jars as if they had been cooled in the icebox! There were always some of the boiled berries that were not put in sealers, because Father would be expecting a fruit nappy for his dinner just a few hours away. The jars were allowed to cool completely before Audrey moved them to the cellar. There they would join whatever preserves left over from last year, and the pickles and relishes already ‘done down’ earlier. It took a long time for the sweet smell to leave the kitchen. The Findlay Oval would be allowed to cool down completely after dinner at noon hour, a meal, which would come right out of the oven, since the top of the stove was taken over by the boiling berries and jars. Preserving didn’t mean Father wouldn’t be having his usual big dinner when he came in from the barns. No siree...meat, potatoes and lots of vegetables...that’s what he expected, and that’s what he got! Sometime during the day I would go down into the cellar through the outside door, and marvel at what was before me. And I knew if there was nothing else to eat during the coming winter, there would be lots of preserves, pickles and relishes to keep us from starving. The thought warmed me right through. The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, July 27, 2017 35
Much ado in the waters of Algonquin Park This summer, I’ve spent a lot of time in Algonquin Park taking photos for a new book coming out next year. To capture the essence of this great park through the seasons, I’ve explored western hardwood hills, southern panhandle habitats, eastern floating peatlands and, most recently, northern lakes and rivers. Last week, I travelled to Brent on Cedar Lake in northern Algonquin. At one time, Brent was a thriving railway community complete with sawmill, general store and school. Today, the railway is gone as are the sawmill and most of the facilities, but a few houses and the store are still in use. Two marvellous rivers — the Nipissing and the Petawawa — flow into beautiful Cedar Lake. My planned targets included the Brent Crater, a famous meteoritecrash site just north of Brent, and High Falls on the Nipissing River. There are several other “high falls” in Algonquin and I was looking forward to adding one more to my photographic repertoire. Because the Nipissing River enters Cedar Lake across from Brent and the lake can be challenging to traverse when windy, I was in my canoe before dawn. Soon I was spending a generous amount of time admiring and photographing a beautiful sunrise. When I approached the opposite side of the lake, a loon surfaced next
to my canoe. Its close proximity told me that its mate was likely nearby, probably attending to a small chick. My speculation became reality a few minutes later. I came across a second loon, this one with a sleeping baby on its back. After a short while, the baby awoke and signalled it wanted breakfast. Unfortunately, the wind had come up and virtually every time one of the adults surfaced with a small fish to feed to its baby and I put my paddle down to photograph the moment, my canoe pivoted around like a weather vane. After a half-dozen mostly futile attempts to photograph this classic example of parental care, I gave up and set off again for the Nipissing.
Michael Runtz
Common Loons take good care of their chicks, often giving them rides on their back where they sleep. Like everywhere this year in southern Ontario, water levels are high and the mouth of the Nipissing, which normally consists of a shallow marsh with a narrow river twisting its way
through it, had sufficient water to al- metre-long portage that bypasses the low me to paddle in a straight line rapids. Halfway to the portage, I came through the forest of pickerelweed. across a very large bull moose feasting After the marsh, I followed the riv- on aquatic plants in a shallow bay. er’s winding course toward the kiloAlthough most of their nutrition is found in terrestrial leaves and twigs, moose gravitate to water in summer to feast on aquatic plants rich in sodium, an essential mineral lacking in their usual diet. After spending a few minutes taking the impressive bull’s portrait, I eventually reached the portage and High Falls, which although not a traditional waterfall, was nonetheless impressive due to the huge volume of water rushing through it. With plenty of rain still falling in eastern Ontario, there might be new high falls arising, and not only in Algonquin! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

Blue-green algae found in Muskrat Lake The Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has advised the Renfrew County and District Health Unit that test results from water samples taken from Muskrat Lake have confirmed the presence of blue-green algae. The samples were taken from a small area of algae that was observed around the municipal boat launch in Cobden. Blue-green algae blooms are a natural seasonal phenomenon that may appear in lakes, rivers and ponds. Some species have the potential to produce toxins which may be harmful to people and animals. Toxins are released into the water when the algae cells are damaged or begin to decay. Direct contact with the toxin can cause skin irritation
and if ingested in higher concentrations, may result in vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The health unit recommends that people using Muskrat Lake, or any waterbody for recreational or drinking water purposes, should become familiar with blue-green algae so they can make informed decisions about using the water. Although algae blooms degrade with time, the length of time potential toxins remain in the area is dependent upon local water movement characteristics. For info, http://www.ontario.ca/environment-andenergy/blue-green-algae or the Renfrew County and District Health Unit website at http://rcdhu.com/ healthy-living/safe-water/

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
