Greater Madawaska. Michael Donohue was unopposed for a second term as Admaston-Bromley mayor. He first won the position in a threeway race in 2014. Jennifer Murphy, the warden of Renfrew County, is back for a third term as mayor of Bonnechere Valley. She upset incumbent Zig Mintha in 2010 and won in a landslide in 2014. In Horton, Coun. Dave Bennett is challenging current Mayor Robert Kingsbury in what is expected to be a close race. Kingsbury won a three-way race for mayor in 2014 with just over 40 per cent of the vote, while Bennett polled the second most councillor votes behind Bob Johnston. Johnston is retiring after a long career on Horton council, including two terms as mayor. Greater Madawaska has three candidates vying for mayor, as Ward 1 councillor Brian Hunt and Madawaska Highlander newspaper editor Lois Thomson are challenging Mayor Glenda McKay in what is shaping up to be an intriguing three-way battle. With Hunt running for mayor and Wayne Fraser not running again, two newcomers running in Ward 1 (Calabogie area) councillor have been acclaimed. They are Chuck Rigelhof and Lucie Perrier. However, there are contests in the other two wards. Two well-known names, former Brougham reeve John Frost and Kevin Ryan, are vying to replace Howard Murphy in Ward 2 (Centennial LakeDacre). Donnie McAlear is challenging incumbent Glen MacPherson in Ward 3 (Griffith and Matawatchan). In Horton, seven candidates are seeking the four councillor positions. With Johnston and Jamey Larone not running again and Bennett eyeing

the mayor's chair, Glen Campbell is the only incumbent councillor in the race. Joining him on the ballot are Lane Cleroux who ran last time, Jeff Taylor who contested a council seat in Renfrew in 2014, and newcomers Douglas Humphries, Ian Moodie, Tom Webster and former township employee Peter Tippins. In Admaston/Bromley, six candidates are seeking the four councillor positions. All four incumbents - Robert Dick, Bob Hall, Michael Quilty and Kevin LeGris - are back in the race. They are joined by newcomers Jamieson Dyer and Angela Field. Joining Murphy on the next Bonnechere Valley council is Mervin Buckwald, who returns after being acclaimed in Ward 4 (South Algona). Incumbent Jackie Agnew is being challenged by Brent Patrick in Ward 1 (Eganville), while incumbent Meredith Jamieson is facing Tim Schison in Ward 2. With Bob Peltzer retiring, ward 3 is up for grabs between Val Collins and Jack Roesner. In Whitewater Region, Mayor Harold Johnson is being challenged by Michael Moore, while Coun. Cathy Regier and Joe Kowalski are seeking to replace retiring reeve Terry Millar. Thirteen candidates are seeking the five councillor positions. In McNab-Braeside, Mayor Tom Peckett is being challenged by Lou Laventure, Reeve Brian Armsden has been acclaimed, and Heather Lang, Scott Brum, Oliver Jacob, Robert Campbell and Shawn Regier are after the three councillor positions. In Arnprior, long-time Reeve Walter Stack and newcomer Gabriel Flowers are seeking to replace retiring mayor David Reid. Dan Lynch has been acclaimed County Council representative and 11 candidates are vying for five councillor positions.

ALL FIVE INCUMBENT COUNCILLORS ARE BACK IN THE RACE JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Peter Emon has been acclaimed to a second term as Renfrew Reeve. However, nine candidates are vying for five Renfrew councillor positions, including former town Mayor Sandi Heins who filed about two hours before nominations closed Friday, July 27 at 2 p.m. Sitting mayor Don Eady is being challenged by Callum Scott, who has sought the top post twice before. Joining Heins in filing on the final day was current councillor Tom Sid-

ney. That means all five incumbent councillors are back in the race, which also features and former councillors Jim Miller and Clint McWhirter and newcomer Adam Laviolette. Current councillors Mike Coulas and Arlene Jamieson joined the race earlier in the final week of nominations. Kate Windle had filed on opening day (May 1) and Andrew Evans made his candidacy official on June 25. The number of candidates became official Monday, July 30, when town clerk Kim Bulmer certified all 11 candidates as qualified to run and proclaimed Emon elected. Meanwhile, both Renfrew area school trustees have been returned by acclamation. Susan Hum-

ADMASTON TEEN FACES STUNT DRIVING CHARGE An OPP officer stopped a vehicle on Highway 17 in the Township of McNab Braeside on Friday, July 27, shortly before 7 p.m. The male driver was speeding, doing more than 50 km above the posted 90 km/hr limit. Devin Limlaw, 17, of Admaston Bromley Township was charged with stunt driving. He was issued a summons to appear in traffic court in Renfrew on August 17. His licence was suspended at the scene for seven days and the vehicle he was driving was impounded for seven days. The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 303 calls for service from Monday July 23 to Sunday July 29.

Domestic violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated 12 domestic disputes during the

past week. One male was charged with criminal harassment; one male was charged with two counts of uttering threats; one female was charged with mischief, resisting police, assaulting police, three counts of failing to comply with a recognizance and two counts of failing to comply with a sentence; one male was charged with three counts of breaching a recognizance, failing to comply with an undertaking and possession of marihuana; and one female was charged with failing to comply with an undertaking and possession of marihuana. No other criminal offences were alleged. If you or someone you know is living in or involved in an abusive relationship help is available. Contact Bernadette McCann House 24/7 for support, advice or the safety of a shelter at 1-800-

267-4930. The Women's Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County is also available 24/7 for information and support at 1-800-6633060. You could also attend the emergency department of any hospital in Renfrew County and ask to speak to a member of the Assault Response Team. In emergencies call 9-1-1.

Impaired drivers On Tuesday July 24 shortly after 9 pm Renfrew OPP officers were dispatched to check a suspicious vehicle on Rox Siding Road in Whitewater Region Township. When officers arrived they found a male to be in control of the vehicle that had been drinking and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. Following further breath tests at the detachment Shaun Graham, 40, of Eganville was charged with over 80 mgs care or control of a motor vehicle and impaired care or control of a motor vehicle. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on September 12. Const. Matt McLaren led the investigation.

On Thursday, July 26, shortly after 10 p.m. Renfrew OPP officers responded to a single vehicle collision on Lochwinnoch Road in Horton Township. The male driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to hospital by Renfrew County Paramedics. The driver had been drinking and failed the alcohol screening test administered at the hospital. Further breath tests were conducted at the hospital. As a result Justin Riopelle, 29, of Whitewater Region Township was charged with driving over 80mgs. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on August 15. PC Megan MacLeod led the investigation.

Fraud Renfrew OPP officers investigated two fraud related calls during the past week. One victim purchased

iTunes cards valued at $150 and provided the access code to a scammer who was to fix a problem with a cellphone and one victim reported someone obtained two credit cards in their name and made significant purchases or cash withdrawals. Many more calls were received where people were directed to report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre as there was no financial loss. Fraud attempts continue on a daily basis in Ontario and Renfrew County is no different. Fraudsters are creative and constantly create new scams to trick people into turning over their cash or personal information to them. Residents are encouraged to be proactive and learn about frauds and scams in order to protect you from becoming a victim. Some excellent educational websites to visit are:

On July 5, a group of enthusiastic young entrepreneurs gathered to meet with Enterprise Renfrew County staff and business community mentors for the official launch of the 2018 Summer Company program. This year, six students from across the Ottawa Valley were successful in earning a Summer Company award to run their own business during the summer. To qualify for the program, the students had to develop a comprehensive business plan, including market analysis, operations and financial feasibility. Instead of working in a summer job for someone else, these students decided to put their exciting ideas into reality, creating their own businesses and becoming self-employed entrepreneurs. Colleen Sadler, Enterprise Renfrew County business consultant, spoke to the essence of the program. "Youth and young adults hold the key to a bright future in Ontario. More employment opportunities will result across our province if young entrepreneurs are given the opportunity to succeed," she said. Here are the Summer Company participants for 2018: • Corbin Brydges operates Corbin's Firewood, in Arnprior. He can supply you with all your winter-heating, cottage or campfire needs. Contact Corbin at 613-3144722 or waynebrydges@hotmail.com. • Samuel Kuehl operates Sharn Craftworks from his home studio in Arnprior. He offers 2D and 3D carved, wooden items such as signs, intricate tops for memory boxes, a wooden picture of your child or a pet, and will also do custom work using a computer- controlled machine. Contact Samuel at 613-322-6250 or somebody.kuehl@gmail.com. • Connor Robinson operates Valley Tech Repair, in Douglas, and provides cellphone screen repair. He can be contacted at 613-281-5504 or connorbuffjoe@gmail.com. • Nathan Boor is operating NB Computers in Deep River. He builds custom computers for gaming, media and general use, in addition to offering computer repair. Nathan can be contacted at 613-602-3548 or nboor@hotmail.ca. • Daniel Fritzsche is operating Focus Photoprint, in Deep River. Daniel will take your photo and create a 3D printed lithophane, which is a 3D image that changes according to the intensity and quality of the light striking the image. You can contact Daniel at 613-602-0252 or danielfritzsche25@gmail.com. • Paige Mask is operating Paige Micalea Esthetics, in Barry's Bay. She offers esthetic services such as manicures, pedicures, acrylic- and gel-nail application, waxing, lash and brow tint, lash lifting, lash extensions, henna tattooing, bridal and special occasion makeup. You can contact Paige at 613-401-5099 or paigemmask@gmail.com. Because entrepreneurs are the back-

bone of Ontario's economy, the government is committed to boosting economic growth and fostering the entrepreneurial spirit. The Young Entrepreneurs Strategy was unveiled in May 2001 and was created to encourage young people to consider entrepreneurship as a viable career choice. The Summer Company program has guided over 130 young entrepreneurs to business success in Renfrew County and has proven itself to be an extremely worthwhile training program for students who want to build their own businesses and develop entrepreneurial skills. COUNTRY MUSIC STAR JASON BLAINE GETS BACK TO HIS VALLEY ROOTS WITH HORTON HOEDOWN HOLLIE PRATT-CAMPBELL hpratt-campbell@ metroland.com For Jason Blaine, country music is a way to share stories about all aspects of real life. "I've always been a country music fan first," remarks the Pembroke native, famous for songs such as Born to Love, Dance with my Daughter and Cool. "I grew up on country music and I think that they're really songs about real life - songs for a Friday night with friends around bonfires and having a great time; songs for Sunday morning; songs of family and faith - of life and love and loss and everything in between.

"Hopefully my music represents that," he says, adding "we sort of run the full gamut of emotions in my songs." Blaine is returning home to the Valley to headline the inaugural Horton Hoedown, taking place at the KOA Campground on Johnston Road Aug. 10-11. "I haven't done an Ottawa Valley show in a good few years," Blaine remarks. "And especially the Renfrew area, it's probably been over five years at least. So I'm really looking forward to this - seeing a whole bunch of friends, and it's close for my family to come out. It's going to be a great night." While his career in country music brought Blaine to Nashville 12 years

ago - an adopted hometown he quickly warmed to - his heart is firmly rooted in the Valley. This June, he hosted his fifth annual Celebrity Charity Golf Classic in his childhood home of Pembroke, which benefitted a number of local charities. And as his wife, Amy's, family is also from the Renfrew area, they make it back to visit fairly often. "I love to support my hometown area and I just love the Ottawa Valley in general. There's always such a sense of home when I arrive." Indeed, he notes that "I think part of the reason I love it down here and I connected very well with [Nashville] when I first moved here was that it

Submitted photo Ottawa Valley native Jason Blaine will headline the inaugural Horton Hoedown at the KOA Campground Aug. 10-11. looks a lot like the Ottawa Valley. I live about 15 minutes north of Nashville in a town called Hendersonville. There are farm fields and hills and lakes and rivers. That's part of what made it feel familiar to me." So what can fans expect at Blaine's Horton Hoedown show? He hints that there will be a little bit of old stuff, a little bit of new

stuff, and some fun covers thrown in. "I've been really, really fortunate and blessed to have a career that spans over 10 years now, so there are some fans who will be there who have known my music from the beginning," he says. "So they'll know the older songs and then I've also got some new music out over the past year so we'll

be playing some of that, some of the recent hits from the radio. And then we might throw in some cool cover songs - something fun and familiar that everybody can sing along to." Kira Isabella, the Reklaws and Andrew Hyatt will also perform at the Horton Hoedown, Horton Township's first country music festival.

GRAND ROUNDS Chocolate donation sweetens the day Her way to contribute back is to make customized chocolate bars as table favours for the RVH Golf Classic tournament each year. J&J custom RVH-wrapped mini chocolate bars are also a hit at physician recruitment events. “It’s good for people to know we can offer all the things that big centres have,” she notes. Special touches like Judy’s customized bars add to the success of the Foundation’s signature event says Sarah Robinson, RVH Foundation Director. “We are grateful for partners like J&J Chocolate Sensations. These types of gifts help offset expenses, allowing us to maximize our fundraising efforts for patient care and medical equipment. Even the smallest gift can have a big impact.”

Charitable giving doesn’t have to mean donating cash—there are many ways to make a difference. Judy Haist-Dick, owner of J&J Chocolate Sensations on the main street of Renfrew, has embraced this philosophy. Speaking from her experience as a cancer patient, Judy knows firsthand about the compassionate, quality care at RVH and is a strong advocate for the hospital. “We don’t know how lucky we are to have the hospital we do with such caring staff, and we’ll all need that care at some point. I’m proud of our hospital.” “Judy has been such a success story in so many ways. We are grateful for the recognition and her ongoing support,” remarks Randy Penney, RVH President and CEO.

INCREASE FINES FOR BUTTHEADS The Neiman Road resident had every reason last week to fume when seeing a motorist ahead of her carelessly throw out a cigarette butt from his window. Prior to recent rains, the woods and fields throughout the Upper Ottawa Valley were tinder dry. Several fires broke out in Renfrew County including a two-acre hayfield blaze on Neiman Drive in McNab-Braeside, a bush fire near Calabogie and three rather serious forest fires in the north end. So with the possibility of forest fires so high, it's plain stupid to flip cigarette butts into the grass or bush along our roadways. And illegal too. Fortunately more and more smokers realize that it's not acceptable to leave their butts lying around. Remember when gathering places such as the Renfrew Armouries had piles of butts littered outside after a major event. Gross. Especially for those tasked with cleaning them up. Now most smokers deposit their butts in receptacles provided for their convenience. But there are still those who think it's acceptable and safe to litter the landscape with their butts. They seem to think that one cloudburst will erase all worries about roadside fires. However, it's apparent that while Renfrew can get a dousing, an area a few kilometres down the road can be missed completely by the storm. Our careless smokers seem to believe that because of our deciduous forests Ontarians don't face the danger from fire they do in B.C. and Alberta. Wrong. Serious forest fires up the line from Petawawa and now in the Parry Sound area have affected traffic and air quality in those areas. It's just fortunate no homes have been lost, so far.

Last summer's devastating fires in British Columbia and Alberta sparked those provinces to crack down on motorists who throw 'lit debris' out their windows. In B.C. fines under the wildlife and highway acts can range from $175 to $575 for offenders. Vancouver has boosted the fine to $500 for those drivers caught "tossing smoking material in a hazardous way." Willow Creek in Alberta has instituted fines from between $500 and $10,000 if your butt starts a bush or grass fire. And it's not just Canada. Washington State has boosted the fine to $1,025 during fire bans. The $500 fine in Western Australia rises up to a maximum of $25,000 and/or 12 months in jail if the offence happens during fire season. Ontario's police tend to levy littering fines ranging from $110 to $180 if they notice flagrant instances. As the danger from forest fires grows in Ontario, it's time the province follows the lead of many other jurisdictions in giving police the discretion of imposing much higher fines if butts are thrown out during a fire ban. The danger is real. That has to be impressed on the few who are still oblivious to how perilous and unsightly their habit is of improperly discarding cigarette butts.

After moving to Lanark County, I've seen three Confederate flags: one in Lanark Highlands, one in Rideau Lakes, and one in Smiths Falls. Coming from Toronto, I'd never seen the Confederate flag on display by anyone – let alone out front of someone's home or business. Shocked by their presence, I asked around about why people would want to fly such a flag with deep history, rooted in hate. I’m told that for those who fly the "rebel flag" in

Canada, it's largely seen as a symbol of rural pride and resistance to big government. But its critics, including myself, maintain that while the flag might symbolize those things for some people, at its core the Confederate flag points to dark, racist roots. While Canadians in rural Ontario, including right here, may have coopted the flag as a symbol to show off their rural pride, they can't divorce the realities of the flag's history. People may want to debate in semantics about what the flag means to them. But, the racist roots of the flag can’t be ignored. As an area welcoming tourists, including international ones, I think we need to think about what message flying the Confederate flag might send. We cannot be complacent. Inequality, systemic oppression, and discrimi-

nation depend on people not speaking up. We can be better. Racism is not dead in our society. Rather, the contrary. And, while the people flying the Confederate flag may not be racist or hateful towards people of colour, we cannot forget the flag’s origins. It’s important for those who choose to fly the flag to think critically about its origins before proudly displaying it. They need to think less about themselves and more about what that flag may represent for someone else and what flying that flag may make others think of them. The flag has also been co-opted by organizations and people who are hatefilled and racist. These people understand what the flag’s history is and fly it proudly to express their own racist views. RVH STAFF PRACTICE EVACUATING 'PATIENTS' JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Patients were evacuated from Renfrew Victoria Hospital's second floor Friday, July 20. Fortunately, it wasn't a real emergency, but rather a mock evacuation exercise for RVH staff without any real patients affected. Exercise co-ordinator Kelly Hebert explained that the drill is held annually, alternating between the second and continuing care floors. The evacuation effort is assisted by the Renfrew Fire Department.

It provides a valuable run-through for staff, especially newcomers, noted Hebert, who is in charge of health, safety and infection control at the hospital. "We always learn something." The evacuation is simulated for a night shift when the least number of staff are available. Some staffers and students play nonambulatory patients who have to be helped or carried out of the hospital from their beds. Hebert said that staff provide feedback on how things can be improved after each mock evacuation.

Staff on Renfrew Victoria Hospital's second floor participated in a mock evacuation July 20 with the assistance of the Renfrew firefighters. Staffers await the all-clear from the fire department. Playing patients unable to walk so had to be carried out in sheets are Nellie Bertrand of RVH's tele-medicine department and business administration student Valerie Clarke.

A UNIQUE SPIDER CATCHES THE ATTENTION OF NATURE WRITER MICHAEL RUNTZ MICHAEL RUNTZ Column

When looking for animals I move slowly and quietly. I also constantly watch for movement. When a leaf shifts and there isn't a breath of wind, an animal is behind the scenes. When a dark spot shifts position on a wildflower, something is present on that bloom. But recently it was a lack of movement that alerted me to an animal's presence. I was looking for butterflies in a meadow, carefully scanning flower heads for movement. In particular, I was searching for thumbnail-size butterflies called skippers. As well as being smaller than most butterflies, skippers sport a distinctive hook tip to their antennae quite unlike the ball tip owned by their larger cousins. About 20 species of skippers frequent our area, with many having, like birds, fairly specific habitat preferences. Sedge meadows are especially good habitat for skippers because their caterpillars eat sedges and grasses. The meadow was a good one, and in no time I encountered large

numbers of dun skippers (one of the plainest butterflies) and a couple of broad-winged skippers. The latter's upper wing surface is boldly marked with orange and black (as many skippers are). When the wings close, the hindwing's underside displays an orange bar across its middle. Next I spotted a Peck's skipper, one of the smallest and prettiest skippers, sitting on a leaf. Something wasn't quite right, however, for its body was tilted on an odd angle. And when I approached, it didn't move. When I got really close, instead of flying, it shuffled sideways, its body still held on that odd angle. Then I saw the reason behind its strange behaviour: t was in the grips of an even smaller spider. Spiders have eight eyes, and this tiny individual had two large ones in the front of its face. This made it a jumping spider. When one thinks of spiders, a beautiful silk web might come to mind. However, jumping spiders don't build silk traps; they use refined vision to find prey, which they stalk. When within appropriate distance of their target, they suddenly leap on it and quickly give it a poison death bite. The eyesight of the jumping spider is the best in the spider kingdom. While the other six eyes help them spot meals in the space around them, their huge front eyes provide sharp vision and give their owner the ability to precisely judge distances. Depth perception is provided

There are a number of species of jumping spiders in our area. All are small, and most are dark, so one must look closely to spot one. They are fascinating animals, unique in the spider world for the way they see and hunt. And unlike most others of their kind, no tangled webs these spiders weave! The Nature email is

by the overlap of two visual fields. Many animals change the eyes' focal point by changing the shape of the lenses. Unlike all other animals, jumping spiders change theirs by moving their retinas with muscles. This makes the large front eyes perform not unlike little search beams that, upon convergence, provide sharp focus and remarkable depth perception.

HAPPY TRAILS FOR MCNAB-BRAESIDE PARK WORK BEE VOLUNTEERS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com A group of volunteers upgraded the main trail and carved out a new one at Alexander Stewart Provincial Park July 27. Ontario Parks warden Tim Courtney, who led the effort, said the work bee is a great start to ensuring the little-known park becomes a destination for nature-lovers from all over the area. "We've been kicking the can on this for three years," he said. "I'm glad it's finally happening." The park is close enough to Ottawa to become a major destination for birders and other nature-lovers, Courtney said. He praised the Township of McNab/Braeside and the Arnprior Fish and Game Conservation Club for partnering in the plan to make the park off Russett Drive and Mill Ridge Road more accessible. The aim of the low impact trail enrichment project is to "let folks see the park safely and use it for outdoor education"

without adversely impacting its biological footprint, he said. "It's beautiful back there." Courtney expressed optimism that students from nearby McNab Public School will be able to use the park for outdoor education, snowshoeing, and cross-country running and skiing. He sees the park as similar to Petawawa Terrace Provincial Park, which has proved a valuable resource for students in that area. Courtney said he will reach out to the Algonquin College forestry program to ask them to ID certain trees in the park. The park contains an interesting blend of tree species and there may even be a rare blue beech there, he said. He also envisions a blog where people can share their experiences in the park. "It's a great fit for our focus on outdoor education, especially for youth," said Arnprior Fish and Game Club director Eric Smith, who along with president Bill

The work bee was buoyed by the donation of two tandem loads of gravel from Elm Enterprises and cedar logs from Todd Sparling and McNab/Braeside firefighters. Another work bee will likely held in the park in late August or early September.

On Canada Day this year, two longtime Canada Day committee members were given recognition for their years of service. Marie Buscomb and Marjorie Watts have been on the committee from the beginning, which would be 20 years or more, and they both retired from the committee this year. They were honoured with flowers, a certificate and a bench, which was dedicated to both of them. The bench, built and painted by Leonard Emon and Stefan McDonald from the facilities department, is bright red with white maple leafs. The plaque on the bench reads: 'Marie Buscomb & Marjorie Watts - Thank you for your many years of dedication to Canada Day.'

“I feel like I owe my customer the best of my abilities, every day. They’re my family.”

RENFREW BRIDGE CLUB ENJOYS A VERY GOOD SUMMER MIKE NAGRODSKI The Renfrew Bridge Club had expected that attendance would slacken off during the hot summer months; but that has certainly not been the case as on average, there have been over 17 tables of players at each session. Most would agree that's quite impressive for a small club in a valley town. Each session's "highlight of the week" follows: • During the July 4 session, Board 22 was particularly challenging for the East-West pairs. Though their combined hands certainly held enough points for a

slam attempt, careful bidding was still required. Accordingly, the slam attempts in diamonds and hearts failed, while the slams in clubs and not-trump were successful. There was a lot of "what-weshould-have-done" discussions after that one. • On July 11, Board 9 was quite the battleground, recording everything from a five spade doubled contract by North (down three) to a five heart contract by West (down three). It's probably best that my partner's comments regarding that last spectacular crash and burn remain unrecorded! • The July 18 session saw every

East-West pair on Board 4 make 12 tricks in a spade contract. However, only Rick Duncan and Leanne Cheliak were shrewd enough to bid and make the slam contract. Well done, folks • On July 25, a Swiss team game was held and even the usually unflappable club director, Dave Sulpher, was surprised to see 18 teams show up. The team of Ernie Berndt / Eric Brown / Leanne Cheliak / Rick Duncan won all their matches and rightfully took the top spot. They were closely followed by the team of Dave Sulpher / Carol Sulpher / Audrey Jukes / Sharon Phillips.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

The organization is holding its annual meeting Sept. 21 at Carleton Reid Hall in Arnprior. It will feature an Irish stew supper and a guest from Dublin speaking on 'Searching Irish Family Records'.

variety of vendors and attractions at the event as well as admiring the beauty and atmosphere of the site. Nathan and Katie Gervais, the new owners of the Almonte area Herb Garden the location for Herbfest's first 20 years, said Waba's gardens and heritage buildings make it an exceptional venue for the festival. "We've met many interesting people here," said Nathan, adding there appeared to be a lot of visitors from Ottawa and the Carleton Place-Almonte area. Jonathan DeGroot of Wilno's DeGroots Farms and manager of the Barry's Bay Farmer's Market said it is gratifying to see so

many people interested in local produce and healthy products. "Twenty years ago hardly anyone gave a hoot," he said. One of DeGroot's garlic customers was Hannah Rauhanen, Nepean campus manager of the Institute of Holistic Nutrition. She said she usually stays in her own booth, but the Waba garden site "is so beautiful, I just had to walk around and see the other vendors." While he didn't have any firm attendance numbers, McNab/ Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett said it appears there was a "huge" turnout. The partnership between Herbfest and Taste in the Valley

proved to make the event "a fantastic success for the township," he said, noting that it attracted a lot of people from other areas. That helped raise the profile of Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens as well as the township, he said. Volunteers deserve a great deal of credit for making the gardens so attractive for the event, he added. Peckett said the township has had plenty of activities this summer to entertain residents and visitors. Next up is the second in the free concert in the park series, with local musicians playing at Burnstown Beach this Thursday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m.

There was a traffic jam in normally sleepy White Lake Sunday. The partnership between Renfrew County's Taste of the Valley and the Herbfest along with the sunny weather helped attract a large crowd to the Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens. The parking lot was full and cars were parked along Burnstown and MacLachlan roads. The significant increase in the number and scope of the vendors, largely due to the involvement of Taste of the Valley, was

frequently noted by visitors. Both first-time visitors and vendors were also effusive in their praise of the Waba gardens site. "This is fabulous to have all these local artisans and farmers here selling their own products," said Terri Loiacono, a first-timer at the event. She said she hasn't seen such an impressive display of local products since her Montreal days. "And the prices are reasonable," she said. "This is amazing for White Lake." Freda Mallory and Carol Theriault, members of a group of four women from Brockville attending Herbfest for the first time, expressed delight with the

DISABILITIES NO DETERRENT FOR BURNSTOWN WATER-SKIERS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com It was a water-skiing outing to remember. Seven clients from Renfrew and Arnprior Community Living and two others with disabilities had the chance to conquer the waves of the Madawaska River in Burnstown Sunday, July 29. SkiAbility Ottawa brought their boat and specialized equipment to the Burnstown Rowing Club dock for its annual water ski visit. The volunteer organization provides access to the sports of water-skiing and wakeboarding for persons with a physical or developmental disability. Calabogie's Graham Mlodozenec, who seriously injured his left leg and hand in a motorcycle crash in Ottawa in 2013, participated in the program for the first time. He showed off his prowess by conducting some tricky manoeuvres and despite wiping out a couple of times was all smiles when he came ashore. Chris Holden, who founded the program with his father Ross, said he expected Mlodozenec would do well as he still alpine skis with the help of an outrigger. The degree of difficulty is tailored to the skills and confidence of each participant, he explained. "Safety first, but we want to make them feel as independent as possible out there on the water." Mlodozenec said the experience had similarities with snow skiing, but dealing with the wake gave the sport a difference feel. But it was a totally enjoyable time. "I'd recommend it for anyone and everyone," he said. He said he learned about the SkiAbility program when he was in rehab in Ottawa. Holden said each participant is given about half an hour of dryland training to prepare them for the ride.

John Carter/Metroland (Clockwise from above) David Jakes of Arnprior Community Living calmly awaits his turn to go wake-boarding with the SkiAbility Ottawa program at Burnstown Sunday; Graham Mlodozenec of Calabogie shows off his confidence and balance by going one-handed on the sitski; SkiAbility Ottawa founder Ross Holden, left, and Community Living's Allan Yull prepare Kevin Inglis for his water-skiing experience as Community Living's Nicole Brown looks on; Renfrew Community Living client Christopher Bujold comes into the dock after an exciting water-skiing experience. Helping him land safely are Morgan Seabrook and Chris Holden. "Knees bent, arms straight, heads up ... that's the key," he said. He noted the water-skiing is ideal for persons with disability as it is a finesse rather than power sport. SkiAbility Ottawa makes its sessions a family affair with friends and family members encouraged to come along to share in the experience and provide support. The program succeeds when the participants feel a sense of accomplishment and want to come back to try water-skiing or wakeboarding again, said Holden. Some, like Alexandra Marta, even come back to volunteer for the program or take up the sport competitively. Among those taking part this year were Community

Living clients Christine Drouillard, Geraldine Prince, Christopher Bujold, Gary Inglis, Kevin Ostrofkie and David Jakes. The program is based in Taylor Park in Ottawa, but when Community Living Renfrew County South asked about a local session 10 years ago, it was arranged and has continued annually ever since.

The Burnstown Rowing Club and the Township of McNab-Braeside have been "absolutely fantastic" in allowing the SkiAbility program to use the park and dock each year, Holden said. The program welcomes volunteers and corporate sponsorships. More information is available at www.skiabilityottawa.ca.

OPINION

DESPITE THE DEPRESSION, FAMILY WAS STILL RICH IN MANY WAYS

SPENDING QUIET EVENINGS TOGETHER A WARM MEMORY FOR COLUMNIST MARY COOK MARY COOK Column

The heat of the summer had settled into the old log house. Even with the windows wide open, covered with the homemade screens Father had made, very little air came in, and no heat went out. At least the Findlay Oval had been moved to the summer kitchen. When it became unbearable, after supper and

after the kitchen had been redded up, we settled into a routine that gave us relief, while at the same time giving me the warmest feeling deep in my stomach, and it had nothing to do with the beating sun that had pounded down on our house all day. Father would be the first to move. He would drag out the back door the rocking chair that sat by the stove, and from where he could rest his feet on the oven door to read the paper. Of course, there was no stove there in the summer. Then my sister Audrey would take two kitchen chairs outside and put them on the grass beside the back stoop. Without being asked, my three brothers, well aware of the routine, grabbed the braided rug from the doorway and

tossed it on the ground a few feet away from the back step where the grass was high. Mother took the twig chair, the only piece of the twig furniture she could tolerate, and moved it off the stoop to help form the circle we had made on the east side of the old log house. The sun was going down, and long shadows soon touched us, and I knew that before long, dusk would be with us, and then the blessed darkness of a Renfrew County night. Until then, there would just be idle chatter. Father talking about the hay he had cut that day, the brothers about the catch of mud pout from the Bonnechere, Audrey asking Mother if she thought the wild strawberries along the train tracks would be

ready for picking. As for me, sitting on the grass at Mother's feet, I just listened, knowing I had little to add to the talk around me. Our arms and legs had been covered with something that came in a bottle from Ritza's Drugstore, so the mosquitoes stayed well away. Mother had her mouth organ, and as I knew she would, the first tune she played was "The Sidewalks of New York". Sometimes, if Audrey knew the tune, she would sing softly in her sweet high voice, and I would again marvel at her talent. The three boys played a game where you had to come up with a word that started with the last letter of the word they gave. Of course, I couldn't spell, so I was left out. I didn't mind

in the least. I was too caught up in the familiar night sounds around me. I could hear a cricket. Was it the same cricket we heard during the day? Mother said they brought good luck. As the night blackened around us, I could see the red smouldering tobacco brighten in the bowl of Father's pipe when he drew on it. Not enough to give us light, but enough to tell me that Father was content ... resting after long hours in the fields that day in the blistering sun. I could feel my eyes becoming heavy. I leaned my head against Audrey's shoulder. The night sounds around me couldn't keep me from nodding off. I knew I would waken in the morning in bed, laying

on top of the feather mattress in my flourbag underwear, not sure how I got there. But in those moments of darkness, I would again marvel at how rich my family was, while everyone was talking about something called the Depression, which to me was happening in some other land. SIXTY PILGRIMS LEAVE RENFREW TO 'WALK THE OPEONGO LINE' The day after the deluge, about 60 hardy souls set out in the sunshine from Renfrew Thursday, July 26 on a three-day pilgrimage to Cormac for Sunday's celebration at the Shrine of St. Ann. The number of Walk the Opeongo Line pilgrims is up by about 25 from last year, noted Rev. Scott Murray as the group headed up the Algonquin Trail to meet up with the K&P Line on the edge of Renfrew. The pilgrims from a variety of Upper Ottawa communities and beyond left Our Lady of Fatima

Church where they had participated in mass and breakfast. While the humidity and heat was rising as they set out, "better the heat than the (day before's torrential) rains" seemed to be the general consensus. It marks the third year for the 66-kilometre walk from Renfrew to Cormac. The first leg follows trails and back roads through Admaston on the way to Mount St. Patrick and St. Patrick's Church. The pilgrims were scheduled to walk to St. Joseph's in Esmonde Friday and on to Cormac Saturday where they will go to the Shrine of St. Ann's for a blessing and take part in the

third and final of three parish masses given by Rev. Dennis Lemieux, followed by a candlelight procession to the shrine. The pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Ann's, in its 80th year, attracts busloads of Catholics from all over eastern Ontario. While there are events on the three days leading up to Sunday, the highlight is the 11 a.m. pilgrim mass July 29 given by Bishop Michael Mulhall. It is followed at 2 p.m. by a mass of healing at the shrine. The shrine is dedicated to St. Ann, the wife of St. Joachim, mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus.

PROVINCE SUPPORTS PROJECT TACKLING CELLULAR DEAD ZONES ACROSS EASTERN ONTARIO The Eastern Ontario Wardens' Caucus and Eastern Ontario Regional Network welcomed the Ontario Government's commitment of $71 million to improve cell service across the region. Ontario Rural Affairs Minister Jeff Leal announced the funding formally at an event in Belleville on April 23. EORN has proposed a $213million public-private partnership to improve both the reach and quality of cellular data services in the region. The federal government and the private sector are also being asked to support the project. EORN submitted a detailed business case for cell expansion to the federal and provincial governments in May 2017. The project is expected to create 3,000

full-time equivalent jobs over 10 years and spur $420 million in new business revenue. "This commitment from the province is a great vote of confidence in the project. EORN is building on the investment we've already made in fibre optics across the region to close the gap in cell services and improve economic growth, quality of life and public safety," said EORN chair J. Murray Jones. EOWC chair Robin Jones added this is a priority. "Funding for this project has been the EOWC's No. 1 priority. The demand for mobile data is growing exponentially, but our region is deeply lacking the needed infrastructure to keep up. We thank Minister Leal, and Minister of Infrastructure Bob Chiarel-

li, for their support and for advocating for this project at the federal level. Eastern Ontario's future is at stake." According to an engineering study commissioned by EORN: ? About one-quarter of the area where there are homes, businesses or major roads in the region cannot access any cellular services. ? Depending on the cell carrier, nearly two-thirds of the area doesn't have enough capacity to provide high quality mobile broadband service given growing demand. The gaps are the result of market failure. Rural areas don't generate enough revenue for cell carriers to build adequate services. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission recently designated both mobile and fixed broadband as basic services for all Canadians. A public-private partnership would reduce carriers' infrastructure costs, creating a stronger business case to improve services and meet the CRTC's basic services goals.

AFTER THE RAIN, GOLFERS HIT THE LINKS AT DRAGONFLY After almost five inches of rain between Tuesday, July 24 and Wednesday the 25th, sunshine finally arrived on Thursday the 26th. It was an exceptionally busy day at Dragonfly Golf Links thanks is some part to the MyFM Summer Golf Tour. One member of the tour was Chris Kulas who was fortunate enough to make an ace on our 7th hole. Congrats, Chris! Let's back up the calendar to Friday the 20th and our Friday Stroke Play League. Marion Knox took third place and was bested only by second place finisher Mary Lynn O'Brien, and this week's champion Pam McFarlane. Monday the 23rd was a beautiful night for golf despite the historical amounts of rain that would fall in the next two days. Nobody enjoyed it more than Renfrew Pizzeria, winning for the second week in a row. The Bunker Busters were the runners up. Closest to the pin winners were Dennis Saumure on #5 and Kyle Williams on #7. Rain dampened our teesheet on Tuesday but it cleared off just in time for our Men's League. Touch wood, but Tuesday has not lost a day to bad weather this year! The Dragonslayers tied for low round of the night but had the best net score, winning A flight. Beatty Pilgrim Construction was the best of B flight. Closest to the pin winners were Will Vincent on #5, and his brother Phil Vincent was closest on #7. Out of a possible 13 teams only eight participated on Wednesday night. Cobus Homes constructed a great round to win A flight, and Scapa Tape stuck together as a team, and won B fight for the first time since early May. Closest to the pin winners were the two Glens - Glen Carter on #5, and Glen Pearse on #7. Thursday Ladies League had no team results to report as an intense storm prevented the completion of play. Though a few trees were lost, and several branches were blown off some of the weaker trees, we are thankful that there were no significant damages to the course. Here's hoping for a sunnier week ahead. Happy golfing!
