County reminds public about wild parsnip The County of Renfrew would like to remind the public about wild parsnip. Staff continues to receive inquiries about the presence of wild parsnip on public and private property,
and further calls are expected in 2017. Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) is an invasive plant that is increasingly common within the County of Renfrew in areas of uncultivated land, roadside
ditches, nature trails, as well as on and surrounding rural and residential properties. Further information about wild parsnip can be obtained from:

Horton Township has a new public works manager. Charles McDonald’s first day on the job was July 19, and so far it’s been a positive experience in Horton. “It’s a good bunch of people to work with,” said McDonald, who says everyone has been very welcoming. McDonald, his wife, and their daughter moved to Ottawa from Alberta last year for his wife’s work. Before leaving Alberta, he had been the roads supervisor at Parkland County, a rural community west of Edmonton, where he spent eight years in various positions. McDonald went to school at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alta., where he earned his civil engineering and technology diploma. He has also taken a number of additional management training courses.
He is very familiar with the rural lifestyle, as he grew up on a farm. “I can speak the language of the rural taxpayer,” said McDonald. He has spent a total of 12 years working with municipal governments, including five years on the consulting side. McDonald has toured the township and done a basic assessment. “There’s a lot of work that needs to be done here and I am hoping that I can make things better.” He notes the township is already undertaking a couple of large projects with the rehabilitation of Fraser and Johnston Roads. “From an operations standpoint, we need to get gravel on lots of the roads and there is brushing that needs to be done to improve the sightlines and the general safety of the travelling public,” said McDonald. Former public works manager Janet Collins has moved on and taken a position at the Township of Whitewater.

Three trucks and seven fire fighters arrived on scene in two minutes and 15 seconds. The fire at 136 Argyle St. was contained to the attached deck and was put out two minutes after arrival. The damage is estimated at $5,000. The fire has been deemed accidental and the investigation is now closed. Derek Dunn/Metroland
Three vehicle collision on Hwy 17 STAFF
A three-vehicle collision occurred on Highway 17 east of Renfrew near the intersection of Miller and Anderson roads on Saturday, July 29. Const. Dave Bird, media relations with the Ontario Provincial Police, says at least three people sustained injuries in the crash but was unable to confirm the severity of those injuries on July 31. “It is an ongoing investigation and no one has been charged at this point,” said Bird. The police received the call at 9:20 p.m. and detours were in place while they investigated on site.

Calabogie Generating Station marks 100th anniversary TIFFANT LEPACK
“Ministry”
tlepack@metroland.com
One hundred years of power is being marked in Calabogie. In November, the Calabogie Generating Station (GS) will be 100 years old, and the water is just as powerful as it was a century ago. At the start of a media tour of the GS on July 27, the water above the turbines in the intake area is a steady stream of what seems to be calm water; it’s not, as it drops 20 feet into the generating station that was built in 1917. Later on in the tour, the large group of officials moves to view the sluice gates, where the power of the water can really be felt and seen. It’s a special year at Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for three of its stations on the Madawaska River. Not only is the Calabogie Station celebrating 100 years, but Barrett Chute GS marks its 75th anniversary in August and Mountain Chute GS will celebrate its 50th anniversary in November. The tour marked the first time Jeff Lyash, president and chief executive officer of OPG,
“Jesus came to heal the broken-hearted and to set the captives free”. He will do it for you.

visited the area, which he said was a beautiful town. He hopes to find a cabin to stay longer next time. Lyash says it is interesting to think what a pioneering effort the Calabogie GS was at the time. “We are really proud of this station as a company and we are really glad to be part of the community here with this station as the anchor. You think about this station 100 years ago; this place was built essentially before the country was electrified,” said Lyash. “This was built for a local purpose and after Tiffany Lepack/Metroland 100 years it’s now On July 27, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) staff, toured the become an imporCalabogie Generating Station, on hand for the tour are: Ka- tant part of a much tie Caughey, tradesperson; Dave Fortin, electrical and control larger system. Randy Pitts, manager of works centre Upper Madawaska, has been the manager for four years with 20 electrical, mechanical, and clerical staff based at Barrett Chute. “On the Madawaska system, we have the trifecta — Calabogie is 100 years old, Barrett is 75 years old, and Mountain is 50 years old,” said Pitts. “These are monumental anniversaries and it’s a proud moment for the company. It’s a very proud moment for our staff who have been maintaining these GS for years, including family members that have worked here for a number of years.” The Calabogie GS is one of five on the Madawaska River and was constructed by the Calabogie Light and Power company in seven months. The crew did it all without the use of heavy equipment, except for a couple of concrete hoists and lifting devices. This development was owned and operated by M.J. O’Brien of Renfrew and was later sold to Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario, the predecessor to Ontario Hydro, in 1929. The five Madawaska stations, and two control dams upstream, operate a cascading river system that sees the river’s waters flow down through each station, covering a distance of 225 km and falling approximately 244 m — a drop that is four times the height of Niagara Falls. Together, the five plants power 615,000 homes with clean, renewable energy.

Fore goodness’ sake This year’s U.S. Open, arguably the most desired title in golf, was won by Brooks Koepka, a first time major tournament winner. The tournament was played on a first-time site, the Erin Hills golf course in Wisconsin that was a bleak, treeless non-traditional layout. But the Koepka win was not the most significant story coming out of that U.S. Open. That has to go to Phil Mickelson, a golfer who wants to win the U.S. Open more than any other tournament after six second-place finishes and the window closing on the 46 year old’s competitive golfing years. Phil withdrew from this year’s U.S. Open because his daughter Amanda, as president of her high school class, was to give a speech at the graduation ceremony. It was impossible for Phil to be in two places at one time and so he opted to withdraw from the U.S. Open and to be at home to hear his daughter speak. This was the same daughter who almost brought about Phil’s withdrawal from the 1999 U.S. Open as her birth was expected at any time during that tournament. Phil was prepared to leave that tournament at any point, leading or not, to be at home for the birth. As things turned out, he was able to finish the tournament (he placed second) and then fly quickly home to be there to witness Amanda’s birth.
What we like about all of this is that Phil seems to have his priorities straight. Family first, career second. We like that. It was a similarly heart warming situation when Smiths Falls golfer Brooke Henderson won the LPGA tournament at the same time as the U.S. Open was being held. To see her jumping for joy and hugging with her sister and her father after winning that tournament made your heart explode with pride. Here was a still 19 year old golfer who not only is exceptionally talented but who also obviously knows and appreciates the value of family. It is stories like these about Phil and Brooke which make you see athletes in a different light. You admire them because of their human qualities, not just their golfing skills. Eat your heart out, Tiger! Speaking of Brooke, she will be a star attraction at the upcoming Canadian Pacific Women’s Open golf tournament at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club from Aug. 21 to 27 later this summer. An estimated 70,000 spectators are expected and Brooke will be the centre of attention, as she should be. She’s not only one of the world’s top golfers already in her young career but she has shown that she’s the type of person that’s human and likeable. Arnold Palmer had these traits and he was known as the “King.” It not hard to see Brooke soon being the “Queen.”
The unjustified demonization of Omar Khadr To the editor:
The 15-year debate over the treatment of former jihadist child soldier Omar Khadr has been dominated by much emotion but little factual evidence. We see this continuing with the debate over the $10.5 million lawsuit settlement paid out by the Justin Trudeau government to Khadr and his lawyers. MP Cheryl Gallant and the Conservative Party continue to fan the popular flames of outrage. In the interests of clearing up the deep fog, let us review what should not be considered facts: It is not a fact that Khadr is a terrorist, certainly not in the sense of having plotted or committed an attack against a population. It is not a fact that Khadr is a murderer. It is not even a fact that Khadr

killed anyone, or that he threw the grenade that killed U.S. Sergeant Christopher Speer in a firefight in Afghanistan in 2002. It is a fact that the Supreme Court and other courts have ruled that Khadr’s charter rights were violated when he was held in Guantanamo Bay with the complicity of the Government of Canada. It is a fact that Khadr was subject to sleep deprivation and lack of legal counsel by his Guantanamo captors. It is a fact that Khadr made a guilty plea bargain to killing Sgt. Speer and to “terrorism” charges. This is poor evidence of criminality however, given the lack of due process in the charges against him by a kangaroo military tribunal, and given the threat of incarceration in Guantanamo for many more years beyond the decade already
spent there. Any innocent person subject to false charges would have rationally made the same bargain to return to Canada. No person ever witnessed Khadr killing Sgt. Speer. The prosecution against Khadr was supported by circumstantial evidence, and even contradicted by a Pentagon report which suggested that another combatant was potentially the killer. Khadr now maintains that he does not remember if he threw the grenade. Conservatives quibble whether “child soldier” is an accurate term for someone who was captured at the age of near-16. Khadr was however brought by his parents from Canada to Afghanistan to join the conflict there at the age of eight, which no one believes is an age of informed consent. Far from showing a dedicated enthu-
siasm for jihad, he has instead shown gratitude and humility in his public statements since his return to Canada. One does not need to read “liberal” or “left” media to grasp these truths. The National Post editors faulted multiple Canadian governments for failing to repatriate and rehabilitate Khadr at the earliest opportunity after his 2002 capture. After having an innocent childhood robbed from his parents, the U.S. and Canadian governments then colluded to destroy his years as a youth for a crime he possibly never committed. These facts provide much more justification for sympathy than for tone-deaf anger and righteous scapegoating of a former child soldier.

In nature, every day is Halloween MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way
Unless one is robbing a bank or attempting to flee paparazzi, apart from Halloween, disguises are seldom worn at any time of year. On that one special evening children and many adults put on disguises to transform themselves into something very different than what they are in real life. The costumes turn their wearers into bloodsucking vampires and superheroes such as Spiderman. Many animals also wear disguises. For some, the costume might involve sticking pieces of their environment onto their bodies. Caddisfly nymphs live in the water and make themselves look like non-living entities by sticking, depending upon the type of water they inhabit, small pieces of organic debris or sand grains onto a silk tube in which they hide. The camouflaged looper caterpillar similarly adorns its body with pieces of petals and leaves from the flowers on which it feeds. Some animals need not add items to their body in order to create a false impression of what they are, and instead wear their disguise all of the time. For some, such as the giant swallowtail caterpillar, the body can resemble a chunk of bird dropping, something at which most animals turn up their nose. For others, the disguise involves something that makes the animal look much larger than it really is.
There is more than one way of looking larger than life. American toads inhale air to inflate their bodies. Young great horned owls that leave the nest too early and end up on the ground spread their wings and fluff up their feathers. Many insects, however, employ a very different method of looking much larger than they really are. In addition to their real eyes that provide them with visual acuity, many insects sport large eyespots that make them look like larger animals such as snakes. A number of local moths sport eyespots on their hindwings, keeping them hidden when their owners sit on tree trunks. When attacked, the moths open their wings to fly away, and when they do large, colourful ‘eyes’ suddenly appear and startle the would-be attacker. The startle effect may only last for a second or two but that is often sufficient time to let the moth vanish behind the tree or disappear on the ground. Eyespots that are only displayed when their owner senses danger are known as startle patterns. Other insects own eyespots that are always on display. Many butterflies including eyed brown and common wood-nymph own eyespots on their wings that are believed to deceive potential predators such as birds into thinking that they have encountered something too big to tackle. A few caterpillars and beetles also own this eye-opening defence. One of my favourite beetles having eyespots
is the eyed elater, a beetle about an inch in length. Elaters are click beetles that when turned onto their backs, right themselves by bending a special prong on their underside in a receptacle until it snaps out, causing the beetle to flip into the air and right itself. When the prong flicks out, it creates a loud click, hence the name. The click can be repeated a number of times. That is, until a loaded chamber is finally hit. The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

USE BBQS OUTDOORS ONLY! They produce carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that can lead to unconsciousness and even death. Never use or store propane cylinders inside any structure, including garages. Take these steps when starting a BBQ: Open the hood.
Never leave the BBQ unattended when in use.
Turn on the gas release valve on the tank.
Make sure grease does not build up on the burners or at the base of the BBQ. This could cause a grease fire.
Turn on the grill controls or heat settings. Take a step back. Push the igniter button. If there is no igniter button, insert a long match or BBQ lighter through the side burner hole first, then turn on the heat control knob. If the burner does not ignite right away, turn the gas off and wait five minutes, keeping the hood open, before repeating the procedure.
At the start of the BBQ season, do this THREE-STEP SAFETY CHECK of your BBQ: 1 CLEAN Use a pipe cleaner or wire to ensure
burner ports are free of rust, dirt, spider webs or other debris.
2 CHECK Examine the hose leading from the tank to the burners. Replace it if cracked or damaged.
3 TEST Find leaks by applying a 50/50 solution of water and dish soap to propane cylinder connections and hoses. If bubbles appear, tighten the connection and/or replace the damaged parts and retest. McNab/Braeside Fire Dept Fire Chief Hartwick 613 623 5756 ext 233

Never throw water on a grease fire – this will only spread the flame. DO NOT place the BBQ close to wooden fences or walls, vinyl siding, or anything that can burn. The area behind your BBQ must be free of anything that can ignite – this is where hot gases escape. Keep loose clothing away from a hot BBQ. Keep children and pets at least one metre (three feet) away from a hot BBQ. When finished barbecuing, turn the gas valve off first, then turn off the burner controls so no gas is left in the connecting hose. Allow the BBQ to cool completely before closing the cover. If you live in an apartment or condo building, check with the building owner or property manager, or the Condominium Act of your building, regarding the use of BBQs on your building’s balconies. * SAFETY TIPS COURTESY OF THE TECHNICAL STANDARDS AND SAFETY AUTHORITY / WWW.SAFETYINFO.CA

Father’s idea ended in Mary running MARY COOK Mary Cook’s Memories
Mother said Father was playing with fire, and as it turned out, he was. It had to do with the constant annoyance of mosquitoes, which invaded us every summer. There was nothing we liked better at the end of a day, than to escape the heat of the house and move our kitchen chairs out in the backyard, and sit a spell as the night closed in around us. Mother would play her mouth organ, and my sister Audrey would sing, and off in the distance we might hear the frogs. My brother Everett, who could whistle better than anyone in Northcote, when coached would join Mother and Audrey. If you weren’t sitting on a kitchen chair, you were on a blanket on the ground, and since I was scared in the dark, I would sit as close to Mother as possible. We wouldn’t be out there more than a few minutes when one after the other of us would be swatting our arms and bare legs, hoping to connect with the horde of mosquitoes laying in wait for us. Soon Mother would say, “Enough of this, those blessed mosquitoes are eating us alive.” Then one night Father said he had an idea, and he vanished into the drive shed and lit the lantern. We had no idea what he was up to, but we could hear the hammer, and soon we could smell coal oil. We could faintly see his outline when he came out of the drive shed with the lantern in one hand and a long piece of wood wrapped at one end with piles of feed bags. And it reeked to high heaven of coal oil. Father told us to put our chairs in a circle, and once we settled down, he took a match from his pocket, scraped it along the thigh of his overalls, and touched the match to the coal oil

Art Pontiac Aug 4- 5 Artistes de la Riviere presents their special Event Weekend, with a Historic Walking Tour around the village of Portage du Fort at 11 a.m. starting near the boat launch. soaked bags on the end of the piece of wood. It sounded like a huge whoosh, like many people taking a big breath at the same time, and the whole thing burst into flames, and pieces of the feed bags flew everywhere. The fire lit up the entire area, including the barn yard, and the coal oil which had dripped down the piece of wood, set it on fire too, and those sitting on the kitchen chairs knocked them over trying to get away from the flames which I was sure were going to burn down the entire farm, including the log house and barns! Father dropped the flaming coal oil soaked mass and headed for the house right behind us. We didn’t need a lantern to see our way. When we got inside, and Mother lit the lamp, we saw that Father’s straw hat was minus its front brim, and his face was blackened with soot. He went right to the wash basin on the bench at the back door. Mother was determined that none of us should go to bed until the fire was out, but Father said it would burn itself out, and we had nothing to worry about. Mother wasn’t so sure. He was right of course. It didn’t take long for the feed bags to burn down. As for sitting out on a summer evening, that was the end of that. The mosquitoes won the battle. All that remained of Father’s idea was a half burnt stick of wood, a brown pile of burnt feed bags, and the smell of coal oil which lingered in the backyard for days. And just to remind us of Father’s attempt to rid us of the summer plague of mosquitoes was a circle of burnt grass right in the middle of the backyard. Cobden home to new CCHL2 team the Whitewater Kings TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Cobden has a strong, proud hockey history. And on Sept. 16, a new chapter will begin. The Whitewater Kings have joined the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League (CCHL2) and will play their first home game at Cobden Astrolabe Arena (43 Astrolabe Rd., Cobden). The team will be part of a unique trend started by the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Canada Tier 1 (CCHL1) Hockey League. Dale McTavish, president of the Lumber Kings, purchased the Prescott Flyers at the end of last season and moved the team to Cobden. He now owns both the CCHL1 Lumber Kings and the CCHL2 Kings. He is also responsible for the Hockey Eastern Ontario Under 18 team in Pembroke. They are now in the unique position of having a free flow of players from midget AAA to the CCHL1. Shortly after Pembroke lined up the three teams, the Carleton Place Canadians of the CCHL1 also acquired a CCHL2 team and will also implement the same free flow philosophy. It has been a busy summer for the Kings franchises as they look to line up a competitive roster for their inaugural season. “I’m pretty happy (with) how it’s going,” said McTavish. “We are getting some players signed and the team is coming together. We will be a young team, but competitive.” Township of Whitewater Region Mayor Hal Johnson says the new team will be a big boost to the entire township. “How can you lose with a team like the Whitewater Kings,” said Johnson. “It’s amazing for our township! They will be a very successful team because we are behind them. We don’t have a chant yet, but we are working on one.” The first general manager (GM) of the new CCHL2 team based in Cobden is Kevin Ready. He admits they

Kevin Ready, the new general manager for the Whitewater Kings of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League, stands outside the Cobden Astrolabe Arena, where the team will play their home games starting Sept. 16. have a lot of work to do and they must ice a talented team in order to gain support in Cobden. Ready aims to ice a competitive team that attracts solid crowds. “We hope we will be worthy of good fan support,” he said. McTavish is also hopeful the community will get behind the team. “It will be a lot of fun on Saturday night in Cobden,” said McTavish. His goal is to have a competitive team with a mix of local players and some recruits. “On the ice, we have to be an exciting team,” said Ready. “Saturday night in Cobden, we want people to mark that on their calendars.” Long term he wants to make the Whitewater Kings a destination for players. He is also working to establish some community partnerships to use the team to support local initiatives. “We have identified areas in the community where we can help,” said Ready. “We want to be a good corporate citizen.”
Ready himself has a wealth of hockey knowledge after decades at various levels: a player, scout, coach, GM, and as a bonus, he is also a Cobden native. From 1995 to 1999, he was the GM of the Pembroke Lumber Kings. After relocating to Montreal, he still coached there for 12 years. Then work moved him back to the Ottawa Valley in 2011, he relocated to Arnprior, while working in Ottawa. The connections with the Pembroke team are strong. While Ready was the recreation director in Peterborough, he billeted McTavish while he played in the Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes. “He was the perfect kid to billet, he became a big brother to my kids,” recalls Ready. Ready, recently retired, reconnected with McTavish and wanted to be involved with the team. “I got wind of the fact that Dale was considering buying a Jr. B team. In truth, I called him and said I got time on my hands, how about it?
I made a pitch and thankfully, he agreed,” said Ready. “Dale’s focus is on Pembroke. We want to run this team as autonomously as we can.” McTavish also has a lot of confidence in him. “I think he brings a lot to the team. He’s an experienced GM and has been around hockey for a long time,” said McTavish. “I’m excited to work with Kevin and I think he’ll do a great job.” Ready’s first order of business was to hire a new coach: Daryl Faught. The two have worked together in the past and Ready always took note of his teams. “I would see his teams in October and seeing them (later in the season) they were a completely different team and would go deep in the playoffs,” said Ready. Faught, a farmer and iron worker, is a local guy, living just three miles from the rink. “He’s got a way of developing players,” said Ready. “He’s very dedicated, committed, has 30 years of coaching

experience and he is the best known minor hockey coach in Cobden.” When McTavish acquired the Prescott team, they soon found out none of their players would relocate. They now have the challenge of putting a team together from the ground up, including the U-18 players, local players, recruits and more. The Lumber Kings held a development camp in June, a first chance for Ready to see some of the recruits as well. “We were there to watch. Some of the players might not be ready for them.” The team is coming together, although he was tight lipped on any of their recruits. “It’s still clear as mud,” said Ready with a smile. “There are some high quality guys who have committed to coming with us.” The Kings will play their homeopener against what Ready says is their natural rivals in the Renfrew Timberwolves, on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. “I think its great for both teams. We can sense the buzz in and around Cobden,” said Ready. He knows the Cobden midget hockey team has a good following and hopes they will come out and support the new CCHL2 team. “We know there is a very sophisticated fan base in Cobden,” said Ready. “My nephew in tyke played there and the place was jammed.” The Kings are now accepting registrations for their first ever-training camp from Aug. 28 to 31. The camp will be held at the Beachburg Arena from 8 to 10 p.m. and are open tryouts. Following the camp they will play two exhibition games against the Renfrew Timberwolves on Sept. 1 in Renfrew and Sept. 3 in Pembroke. For more information on the camp, contact operation manager Jamie McConnell at wwkingsops@hotmail. com or 613-717-2710 or visit online: http://pointstreaksites.com/view/ whitewaterkings/.

SPORTS August 2017 We are well into summer and unfortunately the weather has not gotten a whole lot better. Still way too much rain for the land to bear—and even too much for the lakes and rivers. It has certainly been a tough season for everyone, and visibly so for the farmers who have been trying valiantly to find enough good days to get the haying done. I’ve spent much of July travelling on a legislative committee holding public hearings on Bill 148 which proposes changes to the Employment Standards Act and the Labour Relations Act. The most contentious part of this bill is clearly the rapid change proposed to the minimum wage in Ontario. If passed, it would increase by over 20 percent on January 1st, 2018 and by 31 percent as of January 1st, 2019. As would be expected, advocates for an increased minimum wage made their views known in committee. In fact, many felt that the change should come even sooner. They certainly believe that these changes will benefit those they advocate for. Deputations from small businesses across Ontario, and those organizations representing small business, had a much different view. They expressed serious concerns regarding the proposed changes. They used the word “fear” and believe these changes could lead to hurting the most vulnerable instead of helping them. They indicated that the changes would force them to decrease the number of employees, reduce the hours of work, and require them to raise prices significantly. We in the PC Party have said right from the moment the Bill was introduced, that before changes of such magnitude are made, a comprehensive economic impact study should be completed. This would provide the opportunity to properly analyze how this would affect not only those individuals which the changes are supposed to help, but also the small businesses that would be primarily footing the bill. We heard from businesses all across Ontario—businesses like Calabogie Peaks—who explained that their business competes with ski hills mostly on the Quebec-side of the border. Owner Paul Murphy stated that the legislation would have a dramatic effect on their ability to compete. Additionally, Galen Weston, CEO of food giant Loblaw’s, said this would be a $190 million hit to his company. Can you hear the sound of grocery prices rising? Under increasing pressure from business analysts, Premier Wynne has said that she will help businesses through the transition, but gave no details of what that help may be. If she had done what she needed to do in the first place and conducted an economic impact study, we would have had a much better idea of what that impact will be. We will have to wait until September to find out what changes the Liberals may bring forward. It has happened again: the anti-logging alarmists are rearing their ugly heads, calling for an end to logging in Algonquin Park. The British Columbia-based Wilderness Committee recently started petitioning the Province. This battle has been going on for decades. And everyone knowns that the forest-management plan in Algonquin Park is world class in nature. My Father fought the anti-logging lobby some 40 years ago and I can assure you that I will do the same. Logging in Algonquin Park is not only done to the highest standards, but it is also done in a way that is least disruptive to other activities in the park. It is a major economic driver in our region. We will not allow the claims of some groups in British Columbia to go unchallenged. I commend the County of Renfrew for once again standing up, as they always have, to defend the practice of harvesting timber from Algonquin Park. The well-managed harvesting of timber makes Algonquin a better park, provides jobs for our men and women, and adds millions of dollars to the local economy. It is vital, sustainable and worth fighting for. 20 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, August 3, 2017

leagues are now on the same two-week cycle. That means no report this week and a double report from both ladies’ and men’s rec leagues next week. The results from Tuesday Ladies play are in with Mary Ann Abrams winning A flight by a mere half point over Anne MacNeil. Cheryl Campbell continued her winning ways in B flight with a half point win over Cheryl Cogswell with Colleen Sheehan third. And in C flight, Sheila Kemp took first place with Sue O’Neil second. Sharon Collins was the only hidden hole winner this week, taking home $41. And Barb Westgarth won longest putt on hole 15. Thursday Men’s Day sees Rob Warren and Steve Mulvihill tied atop A flight with 19.5 par points for 9 holes with Kip Mulvihill a point behind in third. After seeing his wife win the week before, Ray Vidler had enough of being teased and won B flight by 2.5 points over Fergus Wrinn with Peter Parnes third. C flight had a first time winner in Terry Mosco with Andrew Rowat second and Peter Cranston and Vic McSheffrey tied in third. And in the very competitive super senior division, John David returned from holidays to win the flight with the weeks high score of 24, followed by Bill McAllister in second, and Jim Senack and Bill Butson tying for third. See you all next week at Renfrew Golf Club.

We had a great event this past Saturday at Dragonfly. Chad Gillan and Mike Hunter have held a very popular golf day at Dragonfly for the last number of years, in memory of Crystal Gillan. Proceeds from the day went to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Congrats Chad and Mike for another great day! I told myself that in this week’s column I would not mention anything to do with the weather, rain, wet conditions or the like. And then it rained for the entire day cancelling Monday night’s men’s league. The sun shined again on Tuesday. It shone particularly brightly on the Wild Horseman who rode away with B flight, and who also had the lowest net score of the night. Winning A flight with the lowest gross score of the week was the team from TF Custom Signs. TF Custom signs do all of our golf course signage and Dragonfly has been very happy with their prompt and professional service. Closest

Closest to the pin winners were Glenn Carter on #5 and Scott Campbell on #7. This past ladies night, pro shop superstar employee Shawn Mosiondz, (and owner of a new puppy) decided to double up the value of his closest to the pin prizes. Taking full advantage was “sniper” Alynne Miller on #7 and Lynn Nolan was “on target” on #13. There was a tie between Birdie Bandits and the Happy Campers in A flight with the Campers winning the tie breaker. 2x67ag DR. SHARPE
Louis Ramon Born 91 years ago on the island nation of Trinidad & Tobago, Louis Sharpe aspired to a different life than that of government service, which he initially enjoyed. He set off for Canada, and McGill University to complete a Bachelor of Arts and ultimately a Doctorate of Dental Surgery, completed in 1963. From there he moved south, practising at New York Polyclinic, extending his studies to a Dental Fellowship in Anaesthesiology at Mount Sinai Hospital, and teaching briefly at Columbia University. He established his own dental practice in New York where, in 1964, he met his future wife, Gisela (nee Molk). They spent many happy years in the city, and had a son, Robert. In 1977 Louis moved his family to Almonte, Ontario where he practiced dentistry until his death. Louis had an immediate charm and a mischievous wit. His quirky sense of humour and easy laughter gave him a talent for putting others at ease and for making them feel welcome and important. Rarely would he be seen in public without suit and tie. He was passionate about fishing, classic British mystery novels, dentistry, and about his family. Louis passed quickly and peacefully at the Ottawa Heart Institute on July 27, 2017. The family wish to extend thanks to the compassionate physicians, nurses and all the kind staff who cared so well for him. His family will sorely miss him. A funeral will be held at Holy Name of Mary Parish in Almonte on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 11am. Renfrew Bridge club welcomes new members The Renfrew Bridge Club’s reputation for friendliness must be spreading throughout the Valley, as new players continue to show up for the Wednesday afternoon sessions and are welcomed by the Club members. On July 26, enough old and new players turned out to fill 11 full tables. The cards seemed to be very evenly dealt and only six slams were made by the North-South pairs over the course of the afternoon. Often, due to different systems, different player skills and different levels of daring, the contracts reached on the same boards can be quite varied. As a result, it was rather surprising to see that every North-South pair on Board 19 reached the same contract (4H) and each pair scored exactly the same result (making six). The wild swings in the contracts’ results are what makes the game so interesting and sometimes so aggravating. Bridge players wouldn’t have it any other way! Congratulations to the July 26 winners: North — South: 1: Jeannie Yagminas — Mona Brydges 2: Steve Gray — Sue Phillips 3: Sandy Towner — Ian Towner East — West: 1: Brenda MacPhee — Margaret Leach 2: Bob Bouchard — Garry Irving 3: George Caldwell — Suzanne Caldwell

Renfrew Fair: junior division guidelines Welcome to Junior Fair (Class 10). Our department is open to members 18 years of age and under. Each exhibitor must be a member of the Junior Fair. The membership fee of $1 entitles the member to enter any or all of the classes in which he or she is eligible. This also entitles the member to three free admissions to the fair. Only one entry is allowed per section. Note: Individuals must exhibit in their appropriate age group and are entitled to exhibit in any higher age group as well in the Junior fair. Our committee has met and here is a sneak preview of what we have to offer to our junior exhibitors for our 163rd Renfrew Fair — there will be a monetary prize for the most points in the Junior Fair again this year. The winner for the 2016 Junior Fair was Elijah Budarick. This year as we celebrate Canada 150, we are also offering prize money for most points in the Canada Day categories. A special thank you to our individual sponsors for contributing materials and prizes. There are many categories to choose from including model making, artwork, handicrafts, baking, fruit, vegetable & field crops (two sections), flowers and 4-H. The artwork and handicrafts division has many interesting entries to choose from. Many of the articles called for, are items readily accessible in your home, including recyclable materials. Create, decorate, draw, snap pictures, sculpt, make collages, or use the computer ... the decision is yours. This year along with any article sewn, crocheted, knitted or quilted we have added any article of woodworking. Hint: Please ask your parents to view Pinterest with you, as they have many interesting craft ideas that
will help you prepare your entries. There is also a section asking you to decorate an unopened, non-perishable box or can of food, which is then distributed to the local food bank. Be sure to check over our baking section for this year, as we have made many changes … perhaps you like being creative and wish to decorate? The fruit, vegetable, field crops and flowers have a large selection of entries to choose from. Perhaps now is the time to decide what your favourite vegetable, flower or field crop entry will be. The Renfrew Fair Poster Competition is open to three age categories and the first-place winners from each will be eligible to compete in the district competition in October. Should they be the successful first-place winner there, they will advance to the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies level competition, which will be held in Toronto in February 20. The first-place entry for 8 eight chocolate chip cookies advances in the same way. Our Carter Shows midway is sponsoring a 3-D poster competition. Ride bracelets or tickets will be awarded in each section to the first, second and third-place entries … plus all entries receive one free cotton candy at the midway Interested in a different challenge? Take a look at the new entries available this year, and we are always open to new suggestions for entries for next year. The 4-H has three sections to choose from: open 4-H class, 4-H interclub competition and 4-H club competition. Entries must be in between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017. The prize list is available at the Renfrew Armouries or at www.renfrewfair.com. We look forward to seeing all of your entries!
