Summer splash Haley Perrigo holds Bentley Ellie-Daye with Brianna Elie as they run through the sprinklers on July 27 at Ma-Te-Way Park to beat the heat.

Local politicians are expressing their disappointment the extension of fourlaning of a vital roadway up the Valley has been left out of a new provincial funding plan. The next two phases of Highway 417 construction from Scheel Drive to the Town of Renfrew are not included in the Ministry of Transportation’s newlyreleased five-year capital plan. Renfrew-Nippissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski said he is both disappointed and frustrated with the decision. “This is a top priority for us in Renfrew County and I want to make sure we keep pushing it forward,” said Yakabuski. Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon also expressed his disappointment in a news release from the county, which has been strongly lobbying to have the fourlaning continue soon after phase two out of Arnprior is complete in the next month or two. “We are obviously very disappointed by this decision. The County of Renfrew remains strongly committed to this project as it will transform the regions along the important trade route across the north of the province from Sudbury to Ottawa,” said Emon. See Renfrew County page 2

Renfrew County to continue lobbying From front page

“We will continue to work with the Government of Ontario, and the Government of Canada in the coming months to ensure we move this important project forward,” said Emon. A county delegation has asked to meet with provincial Infrastructure Minister Bob Chiarelli at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) convention Aug. 14 to 17 to discuss possible a speed-up in the funding for the four-laning. The county stresses that it is committed to “keep working with local, provincial and federal partners to ensure that this important infrastructure investment is made as soon as possible.” The county has been attempting to obtain federal support for the project too, using the argument that the route is part of the TransCanada Highway. Cheryl Gallant said the Government of Canada’s hands are tied until the province writes it into the five- or even 10-year plan. “We have to be asked,” said the MP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. “My constituents feel the highway four-laning is very important. I think the majority of my constituents want it done, so I’m supportive of that. But it is the province that has to make it happen.” Yakabuski has also sent a letter to Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca. “I want to speak with the minister as soon as possible to see what are the next steps to advance this project,” he said. The news isn’t all bad though, he said. “I did receive some encouraging news that it wasn’t a turn-down, but it wasn’t included in this plan,”

said Yakabuski. The County of Renfrew and Yakabuski have been advocating for an expedited expansion of the four-laning for a number of years. Yakabuski knows the county has made a strong case for the importance of the highway expansion. “We know there has been work done, some being done right now, but the progress is not satisfactory ... when one part is done the next should start,” said Yakabuski. The county’s first presentation to the province was made in 2008 and after further research it submitted a formal request in 2012 to accelerate the extension west of Arnprior. Two meetings followed with ministers of transportation in 2013 with more get-togethers in Ottawa and Toronto featuring various levels of government. The county stresses the project has a number of benefits, such as helping reduce strain on the highways around Toronto, improving road safety, enhancing regional capacity, and unlocking positive regional economic development across Eastern and Northern Ontario. Yakabuski also touts the benefits. “It’s all about safety and economic development for Renfrew County.” Phase two of the project out of Arnprior is seeing the four lanes extended from Campbell to Scheel Drive. Phase three would see the expansion through to Calabogie Road and phase four to the far side of Renfrew, across the Bonnechere River to Bruce Street. -With files from Derek Dunn

Renfrew County Paramedic chief Mike Nolan says a response call to the Renfrew Walmart on July 14 underscores a number of reminders related to being able to recognize when someone is in distress and in need of first aid or CPR. Nolan was one of the paramedics who responded to a cardiac arrest victim at the store. At this time he does not have an update on the patient who was sent to the Ottawa Heart Institute. He would like to thank the bystanders and staff for their assistance in this matter. “The County of Renfrew applauds the efforts of anyone willing to jump in during times of crisis,” said Nolan.

Nolan says there are a number of CPR providers in Renfrew County and he encourages businesses and residents to ensure that they remain current with these important skills. “CPR is an excellent way of feeling prepared if dealing with a worst-case scenario of a loved one or a neighbour,” said Nolan. Nolan also encourages all businesses where the public has access, to consider implementing an automated external defibrillator program.

Ottawa River finally designated a Canadian Heritage River John Carter

john.carter@metroland.com

After more than a decade of waiting, the Ottawa River has been officially designated as a Canadian Heritage River to the delight of many Valley politicians, tourism officials, environmentalists and history buffs. “We’re very happy. It was long overdue … it’s very encouraging,” said Ottawa River Institute president Ole Hendrickson. “It’s great timing with the Canada’s 150th celebration coming up.” He said the heritage designation will “open the door for more tourism in this area and could help with (grant) funding.” “It is an exciting day for all residents of the Ottawa Valley and for all of Canada,” said Ottawa Valley Tourist Association (OVTA) president Chris Hinsperger. “The Canadian Heritage River designation is national recognition of the historical, cultural and recreational importance of the Ottawa River,” he said in an OVTA news release. “We know the Ottawa is a vitally important river, the key travel route for our First Nations and for explorers, fur traders, settlers and loggers, and now all of Canada and the world will share in this knowledge and recognition.”

He pointed out that thanks to the river the area is already known as the Whitewater Capital of Canada with its world-class whitewater rafting, kayaking and canoeing in the Rocher Fendu section in Whitewater Region. “As we approach the celebration of Canada 150th in 2017, this Canadian Heritage River designation of the Ottawa River is a powerful new promotional tool for us to promote all the recreational and heritage features of the Ottawa River, and all our other tributary waterways, tourism businesses, museums, artists and communities,” added OVTA manager Alastair Baird. Hendrickson the Ottawa River has symbolic significance in that it brings together the country’s three founding peoples – the native Indians, French and English. The watershed is seen as a “pretty special place” both nationally and globally, he added. He noted that a large number of people had worked hard for years to bring about the designation. The Ottawa Riverkeeper organization was a strong supporter and always talked it up at its gala gatherings, he said. The area’s former Liberal MP Len Hopkins chaired a broad-based committee that has argued for the designation since 2003, he added. Hendrickson said its research was excellent, well documenting the historical and

geographical significance of the river. While the designation only includes the Ontario side of the river, Hendrickson is confident that Quebec will follow suit with some sort of heritage recognition. He called the designation more a celebration of history and recognition of the importance of the river rather than the implementation of new rules to protect it. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant has voiced opposition to the designation in the past, expressing concern that it could result in regulations that stifle development and compromise property rights. In Renfrew for a meeting July 28, she reserved comment, saying she hadn’t seen details of the announcement. The granting of the heritage designation, rumoured since the Liberal government was elected last year, was proclaimed in a news release July 28. The joint federal-Ontario announcement designating the Ontario portion of the Ottawa River as a Canadian Heritage River “for its outstanding cultural heritage values” was made by Ontario Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Kathryn McGarry and Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna, who is also the minister responsible for Parks Canada. The government news release points out the Ottawa River travels through the heart of Algonquin land and has been used as a thoroughfare and transportation route for millennia. Known as the ‘original Trans-Canada highway’, the river was “invaluable to the economic and politi-

cal growth of the region during the fur and timber eras and continues to be an essential economic engine today.” Under the leadership of Parks Canada, the Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS) is a joint federal-provincial-territorial initiative that gives national recognition to Canadian rivers of extraordinary natural, cultural and recreational significance. It promotes, conserves and enhances Canada’s river heritage, helps to ensure that Canada’s leading rivers are managed in a sustainable manner, and encourages the public to enjoy and appreciate them. “Our nation’s capital owes its long history and indeed its very existence to this great river,” said McKenna. “As a vibrant part of Ottawa’s tourism industry today, and the heartland of the Algonquin First Nations, the Ottawa River has a fascinating and diverse history and continues to provide cultural and business opportunities for the communities along its banks. I am thrilled this river is getting the recognition it so rightly deserves.” “The Province of Ontario is delighted that the Ottawa River has now fully joined the Canadian Heritage Rivers System,” said McGarry. “This Canadian Heritage River designation will provide the opportunity for communities both large and small, from Hawkesbury to Haileybury to join together with the Algonquin First Nation in celebration of the Ottawa’s rich cultural heritage and its world class recreational activities.” See River page 5

Plaunt homeowner seeks break on water bill John Carter

John.carter@metroland.com

A Plaunt Street resident feels the town is treating her unfairly by not giving her a break on her water bill. Like many others living on the street that is under construction this summer, Joan Code has had her meter turned off and gets her water through a hose. While she doesn’t mind continuing to pay the base amount for water, “I shouldn’t be paying full price for water coming from a hose,” she said. Adding to her frustration is the town’s policy of charging her based on last year’s usage. That’s been happening since the

water meters were turned off on June 6, she said. While that might be fair for some, she had several visitors last year at this time, so her usage was up significantly over what is normal for her. As well, there are a couple of weeks this year when she turned off the water while away, using no water at all, she added. Code has raised the issue with town staff, but so far has received no satisfaction from their answers. She did receive a call from Mayor Don Eady recently, but he indicated that he couldn’t do anything to change her billing. He explained that there are policies in place and the town pays depart-

ment heads to look after such things based on those guidelines, so it has no choice but to accept their advice, she said. The town did test her water, so it is safe, although it took some persuading by her to get a town worker to take a drink, she said. “It still is water from a hose,” she commented. “There should be some recognition of that (by the town) when it comes to the billing.” She stressed that she realizes the reconstruction of Plaunt Street is necessary. And she has no quarrel with JOHN CARTER/METROLAND contractor Cavanaugh Construction. “They’re doing an excellent job,” A hose distributes water to homes on Plaunt Street while the she said. “They clean up at night … water mains are being replaced as part of the street’s reconthey’re all very polite.” struction.

River designated From page 4

The designation covers the entire course of the Ontario portion of the river through the Ottawa Valley and the Renfrew County and all the way upriver to Lake Timiskaming and downriver to the Quebec border at East Hawkesbury, a length of 590 kilometres. If, as expected, Quebec assigns its own heritage designation to its portion of the river, adding the 681 kilometres of the ‘Outaouais’ that flow entirely in Quebec, it will mean all 1,271 kilometres of the river will have heritage status. HERITAGE

There are 42 Canadian Heritage Rivers (39 designated and another three nominated) across Canada. When a river is designated, a management plan is put in place that describes voluntary actions to promote, celebrate and conserve the river. The designation will provide communities with a platform to promote their region and the “incredible history, nature and recreational opportunities” associated with the Ottawa River.

Kids week wraps up at McDougall Mill Museum Scott Campbell

scottcampbell@metroland.com

Have you visited McDougall Mill Museum? According to staff member Lainy Boldt-Johnson, it can be surprising on who has not seen the inside of the building. “There have been people, who live up the street and said they have never been here.” From July 18-24, the museum hosted their summer kids week. The kids were able to visit the location for free with crafts, games like I Spy and a scavenger hunt, face painting and more, to keep them entertained. “There is an emphasis on kids,” said Boldt-Johnson. “But they bring their families as well.” Boldt-Johnson said the week is always hit or miss, with many factors coming into play like the summer weather etc. “We have had over 100 people,” she said, on July 22. “A lot of them families. Last summer, I would say there was 200 kids.” The McDougall Mill Museum was a gristmill that was built in 1855. “This is the last of the industrial Renfrew,” said Boldt-Johnson. There are three floors with everything in the building has been donated from farm equipment to dresses, the clothes have been a popular part of museum. The fifth edition of the museum’s ghost walk is set for Aug. 19. The event has been growing in popularity and SUBMITED Boldt-Johnson predicts there will be a great turnout. The Canada-wide celebration supports Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, which in Ottawa and the Valley is CHEO. Dairy Queens in this area, including the outlets in Arnprior and Renfrew, have raised nearly $200,000 to help CHEO make kids and families in the region the healthiest they can be. The doctors, nurses and staff at CHEO touch the lives of more than 500,000 children and youth each year. For those planning to order at least 10 Blizzards on Aug. 11 for family, friends or co-workers, they can preorder online at www.cheofoundation.com.

The power of the Internet The Internet can be a powerful tool in today’s society influencing our world both positively and negatively. From social media to blogs to trusted news outlets it is out there to explore every moment of everyday. In this week’s paper we shine the light on two positive uses of the Internet. One is a seasoned veteran in the world of websites and the other is someone who is just emerging on the scene in a very poised matter. Eighty-year-old Stan McCormack from Calabogie started his website The Shuffler in 2002. Over ten years it attracted more than 250,000 hits. In 2012 he started a blog (theshuffler.net) which gets thousands of hits every week. He blogs on shuffleboard activity from Canada, the United States and around the world. That’s right, an 80-year-old blogger shuffling along! He has done such a good job promoting the sport that last week he was inducted into the United States of America National Shuffleboard Association Hall of Fame. He humbly states that his bottom line is to increase the participation of seniors in shuffleboard to help them stay healthy. It is remarkable that someone his age is taking a fairly new tool, a blog, and directing it to an aging demographic to get them more active. As one of his many accolades says ‘Stan is the Man.’ At the other end of the spectrum is 16-year-old Kathleen Barr, Miss Teenage Eastern Ontario, who is living out every little girl’s dream of being a real life princess. Also last week, she represented Douglas and Renfrew County at Miss Teenage Canada in Toronto and she sure has made the

Valley proud. During her reign she has attended many events in our area and she is always graceful, respectful, passionate and kind to everyone she meets. One of her pageant requirements was to share her experiences via a blog, which was fun, insightful and very personal as she shared some of her sister’s journey with cancer. It received high praise and overall she was one of the top three bloggers at the event. Social media also played a part determining the People’s Choice Award winner. When people voted for Barr they knew they were backing a winner. Out of the 54 delegates she finished third, not bad for someone coming from this small part of the world. The two biggest accomplishments for Barr must also be applauded; she received the top fundraiser award and was awarded a trip to Ecuador with Free the Children and she was also the third runner-up overall at the pageant. Quite the accomplishments for a Valley girl in the big city of Toronto! These online changes have also had a profound effect on the community newspaper industry. In addition to your weekly print edition of the Mercury, our website (InsideOttawaValley.com), Facebook and Twitter accounts allow us to share our stories with you on a daily basis and continue to grow in popularity. These additional options keep our readers up to date on the very latest and we thank you for your continued support. Congratulations to both Stan and Kathleen for representing the Valley on the worldwide stage, the Internet and the Valley wait for their next adventure.

Response to ‘Rain rain come our way’ To the editor:

Chanting to the rain god does not work even in an editorial (July 7.) Well, here goes nothing. I have lived without running water for 35 years. My hobbies include gardening, tropical fish (1,000 gallons) and for the last 29 years as many as seven warm blood horses. All these activities require considerable amounts of water. So I consider myself to be something of an expert when it comes to water use. There are dozens of ways to reduce, recycle and reuse water. What is needed is imagination and creativity. I’m not going to bore you with the details of how I manage to provide soft acidic (3°K, ph 6.4) water for Amazonian discus and cardinal tetras in one aquarium and hard, alkaline (20°K, ph 8.2)

What is important is for individuals to learn how to appreciate H20 as one of the most valuable resources on the planet, instead of using it as a repository for our excrement. Water is the hydrological part of our fluctuating climatic pattern. We are in the middle of a three-year (normally) El Nino event, which is also producing massive flooding in South Central China and parts of Europe. Here in eastern Ontario, it results in warmer winters with less snow, that dryness persists into spring and early summer.

Climate is what you anticipate and weather is what you get Continued from front

In late summer (looks like July 1 this year) the precipitation increases and farmers have more hay than they know what to do with. That was the pattern last year and this year, and I expect will continue next year. Climate is what you anticipate – weather is what you get. El Niño precipitation tends to be localized as thunderstorms leaving some areas dry and others deluged: hence the flooding. But, part of the problem does not come from the sky (hence the futility of prying for rain) it’s in the ground. There is more fresh water in the ground than all the lakes and rivers combined on this planet. These, aquifers, like lakes, have history that goes back 100,000 to several million years, which most people know nothing about. What makes you think that if your neighbor gets 12 gallons per minute out of their well that a subdivision of homes will all get the same rate of flow? You may want to read ‘Syrias climate refugees’ in the March issue of scientific American. Kemal Ali, a successful agricultural well digger went from digging 60 meter wells to depths of 500 to 700 meters. Only to have to give up

the business as farmers could not afford the cost. Their drought has displaced 1.5 million farmers, even though Syria is part of the fertile crescent where agriculture began 4,000 years ago. The article goes on to explain how some of Syria’s water crisis is largely due to its own mismanagement. Back home my little creek is low, but still flowing, which is average for July based on 35 years of observation. Build a subdivision upstream and the creek will probably disappear. That’s what happened to the creek I had to cross every day on my way to Danesbury Public School in North York. That former farm field is now a subdivision and on the other side of Marlee Ave. is the subway line/expressway that takes you north to Yorkdale Plaza. As children, we skated and played hockey on the duck pond and cat-tail marshes that were once there. It only took ten years of my lifetime for all that water to disappear. It’s not just a shortage of water, as it is an excess of overdevelopment; when is directly proportional to increased population. There are parts of the world today where entire lakes have disappeared, were once viable fresh water fishing communities thrived. Close your eyes and visualize Lake

how to discern between development and mismanagement or join a long list of failed civilizations like Syria. P.S I love the irony of the water sprinkler on the newly sodded

Dore, Lake Clear, the Bonnechere and Madawaska Rivers – gone! That is the magnitude of what has already occurred when human over development coincides with climatic change. We need to learn

After 20 years Smart-Care Clothing company founders Les and Rossie Smart have decided to retire. It was a hard decision for them to make, but once they found Bill and Karen Colbert of Burnstown they knew they were leaving their business in good hands. As a nurse Rossie saw a need in the Ottawa Valley to provide good quality adaptive clothes for people with mobility issues. She looked until she found just the right companies to make her clothes to the standard she was looking for, and then she and Les set out in their car to sell directly to their customers. Over the years they expanded, bought a van and a trailer and travelled all over the Ottawa and Seaway valleys to sell much needed clothes for active seniors, and adaptive clothes at long term care and retirement homes. Along the way they made numerous friends and had many repeat customers. As time went on, they found themselves looking towards retirement but were reluctant to sell their company to a big corporation that would no longer look after their customers in the way they have become accustomed. That’s when the Smarts decided that Karen Colbert had all of the qualities they were looking for in a new owner for their ‘baby’. They met at Island View Retirement Suites in Arnprior where Karen worked as the life enrichment co-ordina-

The store in Shawville has closed, but the Colberts continue to service all of the homes that the Smarts did.

GRAND ROUNDS Traditional events and new activities on the horizon for RVH Auxiliary

One of the newest members of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital’s Auxiliary has taken over the reins as president. Shauna Lemenchick is quite excited about carrying on the role with a healthy mix of fresh ideas and long-standing traditions. Lemenchick says they’re hoping to start a few different fund-raising activities in the next year as part of their pledge of $250,000 to RVH for the rooftop solarium that has been named in their honour. “They’re a wonderful group of ladies who are very helpful,” Lemenchick says about learning the ropes and the history of the 75-year-old organization from the veteran members. “Everybody makes it so easy.” She says she was immediately amazed by their commitment: “Some of the

members have been involved in Auxiliary for more than 50 years.” To round out the Auxiliary Executive, Lemenchick has the guidance of Marilyn York, Past President and Doris Handford, Treasurer. Another new face to the executive is no stranger to this community or being an advocate for RVH. Since retiring from politics, Audrey Green has stepped up to be the Auxiliary Vice President and Secretary. They have ongoing major traditional fundraising activities (like the bake sales, break-open lottery tickets, and the Victoria Gift Shop), but the first project for the new executive is shaping up to be one hot ticket, Lemenchick promises. The “Wheelbarrow of Cheer” is a raffle of a wheelbarrow filled to the brim with

all kinds of great prizes including gift certificates, meals, bottles of wine, local craft beer tastings and many other items that are still rolling in. “I’m very impressed by the amount the community contributes and offers to help our hospital,” Lemenchick says. “People are so willing to give and support our activities.” They will soon sell tickets for the wheelbarrow in the Gift Shop, and they

will be available for purchase at the Renfrew Fair. RVH is grateful to the Auxiliary members who act as promoters and assist the efforts of the hospital to provide the highest-quality health care services. To date, this volunteer group has raised more than $1 million to improve care for our patients. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call 432-4851 ext. 263.

Renfrew Refugee Welcome Group receives good news After “glacially slow” progress on its community efforts to resettle a Syrian family, the Renfrew Refugee Welcome Group (RRWG) has its first good news in months of patient waiting. “We have just found out that our application to the federal department of Canada Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (CIRC) has made its way through the queue to the next step, in fact to the next three steps,” said Henry Venema, the RRWG chairperson. “There is light at the end of the long dark tunnel for our Syrian family of five who have been waiting four years in a United Nations refugee camp in Amman, Jordan.” In May, the Renfrew group publicly stated that its application had been held up so the community group has been “talking with and writing to whomever we could in the government, including asking for help from our MP Cheryl Gallant, as we tried to move our case forward in the government queue. “ “Finally, two weeks ago we were asked by the CIRC department for more pertinent information on our finances and the availability of accommodations for the Syrian family’s resettlement in Renfrew,” Venema said. “Last week we heard that our Renfrew application had been approved, and then we were advised the application went to the third step as it has been forwarded to the Canadian officials in Jordan,” said Venema. “The next step is an interview with the family of five as well as medical and security checks. Once they are approved, the family can obtain an exit visa and arrange transportation to Canada.”

Venema said that there is renewed optimism because the Renfrew sponsorship group is “totally ready for our family” and can even pay for the overseas transportation. “The fact that the Syrian family is located in Jordan is favourable because there certainly is a faster processing of refugees in Jordan than other Middle East countries.” “So now we wait again. It is very frustrating but we are now more optimistic that our family can be part of the thousands of privately-sponsored refugees which the federal government hopes to bring to Canada by the end of year,” said Venema. On July 14 in a CNN TV interview, Chrystia Freeland, the Canadian minister of international trade, stated that: “We said we would accept 25,000 Syrian refugees (by Feb. 29); we are now almost at 29,000 and our minister of immigration (John McCallum) has said he think we will get between 35,000 and 50,000 by the end of this year.” The Renfrew Refugee Welcome Group is planning a community information meeting for Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. at the Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church in Renfrew.

ENERGY $AVING$! Before buying an air conditioning unit or system, find out its energy-efficiency ratio (EER). Calculate the EER by dividing the unit’s cooling capacity (BTUs/ hour) by its energy requirement (watts). An EER of 10 or more is very good, and 6 or 7 is fair. Remember to buy the smallest capacity unit or system that will meet your needs.

Miss TEO Kathleen Barr wins big at Miss Teenage Canada Kathleen Barr, Miss Teenage Eastern Ontario 2016 spent last week at the National pageant in Toronto, she won one of the major awards and finished as third runner up. The entire week was an “opportunity of a lifetime” Barr said. The 54 delegates from across Canada toured Toronto, participated in preliminary judging competitions, attended rehearsals for the final pageant production and had an opportunity to have official photo shoots and video shoots with the MTC official photographer. “This week was exciting, busy and so much fun! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and taking part in this life changing experience is something I always will look back on and smile about.” Barr represented the Renfrew area with poise and enthusiasm and her positive and upbeat personality made her a favourite with the MTC Staff. One of the criteria for the pageant was for each delegate to share her experience and charity platform through their official Miss Teenage Canada Blog. Barr’s blog www.missteeneasternontario.com was exceptional and she was in the top 3 Bloggers as indicated by the Social Media Judge. Her Childhood Cancer awareness blog series focused on her sister Jill’s cancer journey was exceptional and gained her very high praise. Another component of the pageant is the People’s Choice Award. The opportunity is given to the public to go onto the MTC website and vote for their favourite delegate. Barr received the third highest number of votes! Quite an accomplishment for a small town girl. Barr credits this to the amazing support she received from the entire region! Pageant night was an amazing

cause this moment will never happen again. So that is exactly what we did. The whole night seemed like it went by in the blink of an eye. When they were calling top 20, I never expected my name to be called. My legs couldn’t stop shak-

ing when I made my way to the centre of the stage. The top 20 then went on to do our bathing suit walk and then returned to find out who would make top 10. To hear my name called again made my heart pretty well stop. I couldn’t believe it, and then being called for top 5 was equally as exciting. Next up was impromptu questions. I was so impressed by how poised and confident all of the girls were when they answered. All of the girls did so well throughout the evening I’m sure it was a difficult decision for the judges to make” Prior to the announcement of the Miss Teenage Canada 2016, there were several awards to be handed out. Barr was awarded the coveted Miss Teen Top Fundraiser award. Each delegate was given a seven week time frame to raise funds for the MTC charities Free the Children and Fort McMurray Relief Fund. Bar took this challenge with a personal goal to win this award. And she did, she raised an incredible $14,403 in just seven weeks. As the recipient of the Miss Teen Top Fundraiser award, Kathleen was awarded a three week trip to Ecuador with Free the Children. “Miss Teen Top Fundraiser is

a title that I am incredibly proud of. My fundraising and volunteer work is something I am very passionate about and love doing. I have been volunteering ever since I was a little girl and plan to continue on this enriching path.” As the final announcements were being called, Barr was standing centre stage as one of the top five vying for the title of Miss Teenage Canada 2016. Her very loud supporting group of family and her Miss Teen Ontario East Pageant team was enthusiastic and so excited when she was presented the third Runner Up to Miss Teenage Canada 2016! “Thank you to my family, friends and community for your love and support, knowing you were all cheering me on this weekend means the world to me and I couldn’t have received Miss Teen Top Fundraiser without your support. To my MTOE family and my new MTC family I love you all, thank you so much for this experience. This has been an amazing time in my life that I will never forget.” Congratulations to Barr third Runner Up to Miss Teenage Canada 2016! You were an outstanding representative for the Teen Ontario East Pageant and our entire region!

The Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County recently applied for and received a grant from the Ontario government’s Innovation Fund to expand its services throughout the county. “The Innovation Fund invests in projects that support survivors who may be at higher risk and require services tailored to their needs,” explained centre communications coordinator Jancy Brown. The project, one of just seven funded across Ontario, focuses on offering supports to women living in less accessible parts of the county. “Renfrew County is a large area and women do not always have access to transportation to receive

Correction: Donation to MWC In the July 28 issue of the Renfrew Mercury the paper incorrectly identified someone in the above photo; the paper apologizes the error. The Muskrat Watershed Council recently received two funding commitments from SRB Technologies (Canada) Inc. On hand for the announcement are: Stephane Levesque, president, SRBT; Jamie MacDonald, manager, Health Physics & Regulatory Affairs, SRBT; Ross Fitzpatrick, vice-president, SRBT; Karen Coulas, chair, MWC; Debbie MacDonald, treasurer, MWC; Evelyn St. Amour, volunteer, MWC; and Julie Sylvestre, director of Science & Water Quality, MWC.

Correction An article in the July 28 edition of the Renfrew Mercury titled ‘Cubs descend on Hurd’s Lake’ stated Camp Legewade is one of the last locations in the country to still have a campsite operated by Scouts Canada. In fact, Scouts Canada owns and operates 125 camps for youth across Canada – 50+ in Ontario and Quebec alone. For more information on the campgrounds visit: http://www. scouts.ca/sites/default/files/canadian-campsites-directory-scouts-2016.pdf. The newspaper apologizes for the error.

When you walk into The ShoeLounge in downtown Renfrew one of the first things you see is its stunning 3-D sign. The sign was created by Arnprior sign maker Shirley Carron of Black Sheep Designs and it recently won a national award from the Canadian sign magazine Sign Media in its national sign competition where it won for top building sign. The sign was inspired by a glass mosaic piece created by Renfrew artist Kathryn Bossy. “I took inspiration from that sign,” explained Carron. Carron says as a sign maker her job is to make sure everything stays consistent with the store brand. She has been making signs for 29 years and she says this win confirms what she should be doing in her life. She found out she won via email a few weeks ago and is very humbled by the honour. “I thought wow, I wasn’t expecting it because it was all across Canada,” said Carron. “I am excited to do more 3-D work in the Valley. The lower piece of the sign was supplied by T.R. MacMunn in two pieces, it has a metal mounting bracket which is hidden between the two sides. The shoe itself was handcrafted from high-density urethane and the bows are made of epoxy clay over mesh and all mounting hardware was concealed behind the knot. “It took 80 hours to make,” said Carron. “Shaping, sanding and painting it by hand.” The Shoe Lounge owner Jill Soucie, commissioned the sign in early 2015 and it was completed last fall. Soucie says it took a lot of back

What flies like a Hummingbird but looks like a Bee? Nature is full of surprises. There are squirrels that glide (Flying Squirrels), frogs that climb trees (Gray Tree Frogs), and snakes that play dead (Hog-nosed Snakes). In Nature there are also in many animals that look like something that they are not. Gardens are wonderful places to see fascinating insects. Hover Flies are common visitors and many are yellow and black, the same colour as bees and wasps. However, unlike their colourful look-alikes, Hover Flies don’t sting, and by bearing the stinging insects’ warning colours, the harmless flies gain inexpensive protection. One of my favourite insects is one that is often mistaken for other animals, usually not an insect. It is a moth, but one that neither flies at night nor sits on screen windows illuminated by lights. This unusual insect flies in the daytime and hovers at flowers. Its size and flying ability make it look surprisingly like a well-known bird that also hovers at flowers. The insect is a Hummingbird Clearwing and it behaves just like the namesake bird. Clearwings are a type of Sphinx Moth and there are actually two

species in our area. The Hummingbird Clearwing and the Snowberry Clearwing look very much alike and because their wings move so rapidly it is often difficult, sometimes near impossible, to see the subtle differences in wing venation that make separating the two species an easy task. However, a good view at the moth from behind usually provides sufficient clues to its identity. Snowberry Clearwings have a pale back (thorax) with a dark stripe running down the middle, and their abdomen sports a yellow band near its black tip. Hummingbird Clearwings have a uniformly pale brown back and on their abdomen resides a chest-

nut-brown band with a darker mark down the middle. In addition to these markings, the dark edges bordering Hummingbird Clearwings’ hind wings tend to be wider than those of Snowberry Clearwings. Clearwing moths are sometimes mistaken for Bumble Bees because they are round and fuzzy and visit flowers. However, when Bumble Bees get nectar or pollen, they land on the flowers and their wings go motionless. Clearwing moths drink while they are hovering and their wings are a blur; a Clearwing sitting at rest is a sight not commonly seen by human eyes. Like other nectar-drinking moths (and butterflies), Clearwings have a long, extensible tongue. When not in use, the tongue is coiled like a rolled-up garden hose and safely tucked away. While we regularly see the adult moths in our gardens, the caterpillars tend to be less visible. As larvae, the two species dine on a variety of plants with Hummingbird Clearwing caterpillars most often feeding on the leaves of viburnums and Snowberry Clearwing caterpillars eating dogbane leaves. The two species do share some

Muskrat Watershed Council receives donations from Jp2g Consultants Inc. The Muskrat Watershed Council (MWC) has received two funding commitments from Jp2g Consultants Inc. Pembroke. One portion of Jp2g’s donation ($2,000) will provide for half the cost of MWC’s report on 2015 water quality monitoring data. This second annual report will provide analysis of water sampling data, draw comparisons to 2014 results and consider new solutions for Muskrat Lake and its watershed. DONATION

Jp2g will also make a donation of $1,000 to support the MWC’s ongoing work for 2016-17. Jp2g is now one of the first Gold Level Corporate & Club members of the Muskrat Watershed Council. Twenty-dollar personal memberships have provided core support for MWC’s operations since 2014. As its work in the watershed continues to expand to include annual water sampling, shoreline buffers and controlled tile drainage projects for 2016, MWC is seeking to grow partnerships and fundraising support through the addition of Corporate & Club Memberships. MWC SUPPORT

Over the last two years, local businesses and community groups have supported MWC in many ways including in-kind contributions of time and services, door prizes and cash donations. MWC is now seeking Corporate & Club Members to work with us in support of a healthy watershed for the future. Corporate & Club members of the Muskrat Watershed Council will be recognized at the following donation levels each year: Gold - $1,000 and up, Silver - $500 - $999, Bronze - $200-$499 and Friend of MWC - $20 - $199. Shuffleboarder Stan McCormack inducted into US hall of fame Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Calabogie’s Stan McCormack has shuffled his way into the hall of fame. The 80-year-old was inducted into the United States of America National Shuffleboard Association Hall of Fame with a service award on July 21in Ohio for his promotion and dedication to the sport. McCormack started to play shuffleboard in the mid-1990s when he and his wife Lois started to winter in Florida, which has the greatest number of shuffleboard players in any state. “For us perhaps the social interaction is perhaps greater than the physical aspect,” said McCormack. “But don’t under estimate the intensity of emotions when a match is on.” In 2002 he started the website The Shuffler and reported on results from every major tournament in Canada, Florida, Arizona and Texas. “I commented on the personal aspect of the game and it was those stories that caught on and that’s what made it grow,” said McCormack. He worked on the site with three other people and when it shut down in 2010 it had more than 250,000, hits more than any other Shuffleboard websites combined. In 2012, he decided to start blogging on shuffleboard and started a TheShuffler.net, where he posts multiply articles each week and gets thousands of weekly views. As an 80 year-old blogger he says it’s hard to believe the attention his site gets. “It’s because they are interest-

ed in shuffleboard!” he said with a big smile. He was recognized with the service award in the hall of fame for his promotion of the sport. “The bottom line is to increase the participation of seniors in shuffleboard,” said McCormack. “I think it contributes to their health.” This is not the first time he has been recognized for his work with shuffleboard. He was also inducted into the Canadian National Shuffle Board Association Hall of Fame, Florida Shuffleboard Association Hall of Fame and more. He doesn’t want to minimize any of his awards but he says the recent induction makes him feel great. “It was time,” said Lois. “He has done so much for shuffle board and there are only six other Canadians in the hall of fame. It took a lot of people by surprise he made it and I am really pleased that it happened.” Lois is a well-decorated shuffleboard player in her own right. Along with Stan she has also been recognized by the International Shuffleboard Hall of Fame where she was inducted in 2014 with a special award. The couple has travelled around the world to play shuffleboard to Brazil, Australia, Germany, Ireland and Lithuania. So what’s next for the pair, they are set to take a vacation from the game they love this fall going from Berlin to Budapest. They also plan to travel to Arizona, Texas and Florida for a month each to shuffleboard. Stan says to maintain their connections in the game and one other important reason. “To ensure I have something to write about!”

Highlights from Dragonfly Golf Links Bill Rainboth

Dragonfly Golf Links, General Manager

With the long weekend that past my newsletter submission had to be in earlier and I will not be able to tell you about all the cool things happening at Dragonfly this past weekend – Like out Club Championship, and the Hass Family tournament, and the Ashby Lake tournament, or the Colterman Group… So let’s just assume that everyone had a great time and the weekend was a massive success! Thankfully our leagues always provide me with lots of exciting content – starting this past Tuesday where MacDonald Glass is

still holding a hot hand winning A flight by four strokes from the nearest competitor. Speaking of hot, the Renfrew Fire fighters won B Flight for the second week in a row with a scorching round of 64. A nd it give me great pleasure to tell you the Yolkowskie Hackers hacked away for the their first win of the year to take C flight. Closest to the Pin winner were Curtis Thompson on #5, and Andrew Ritchie on #7. On Wednesday Apollo Property Management won for the second week in a row (despite me lowering their handicap) to take A flight, and Opeongo Bowldrome had the best round of the night with a 64.

Closest to the pin winner were Chad Thompson on #5, and Tim Lemoyre Jr. on #7. Ladies Night was a perfect night for golf! Team Lost Balls and the Garden Lake Loonies would be quick to agree with me, as they won A and B Flight respectively with handicap adjusted scores of 31. Closest to the Pin winners were Judy Dubeau on the #5, and Pauline Martin #7. Anybody out there looking to buy a membership for 2017? Busy summer at Calabogie Highlands Golf Club Val Trotter

Calabogie Highlands Golf Club, President, Members Association

The 2016 golf year at Calabogie Highlands Golf Club is well under way having just completed both the Men and Women Intersectional events. The Senior Intersectional’s will be held in August with Calabogie hosting the women’s tournament this year. The Thursday Women’s league boasts over 42 women this season, the Men’s league have 56 men registered and the Monday Ladies “Fun” league recorded 19 players. Our mixed golf has monthly activities with the June event having being the “Battle of the Sexes.” For the third year in a row, the men squeezed in their third win on a hot humid day with much laughter and socializing afterwards. The ladies are determined to win in 2017. On Thursday, July 21, the ladies held their annual member guest day. The theme for this year was “Camo” and many women from the valley were dressed in camouflage attire and wandered aimlessly around the golf course with fear of being snapped up by the course photographer.

And speaking of photo’s, our Buzz McConnell event was recently held, with our past president winning the treasured prize from last year’s winner, who anticipated another win this year, but alas, Carole Mundy took the coveted trophy away from Donna Marie Kennedy, much to her chagrin. LADIES

Monday ladies have had a blast as well this year, realizing that golf can be relaxed and fun when one lets down their hair and enjoys nine holes of golf before dinner and drinks in a laid-back atmosphere while our new chef caters to their whims and wishes. Match plays continue in both the Men’s and Women’s leagues with winners soon to be declared. Stay tuned for more information coming from the Highlands following our Women’s Annual Charity Golf Tournament in support of the Bernadette McCann House for Women. Bridge turnouts holding in heat Lewis MacDonald

Eleven-and-a-half tables competed at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre July 13 and July 20 respectively. An anticipated summer drop-off in attendance for these sessions didn’t materialize, cheering organizers. In the Chalk Talks preceding play on the July 13 date, Carol Sulpher provided valuable tips to interested players. Sulpher focussed on the Convention Card explaining the distinctions between sections of the card highlighted in blue or those in red. Any blue section requires an announcement while a section in red requires players to use the ‘alert’ card. Wayne Daze, on July 20, had players decide on the appropriate lead in a variety of contracts. Seeing only their own hands, players were made aware of the importance of paying close attention to the bidding in order to make the lead. Only two slams were successful on July 13. Joni Fine and Gord McArthur took all 13 tricks in a doubled six spades contract on Board 18. Also bringing home a six-spades contract were Gail Gamble and Suzanne Kennedy on Board 24. Congratulations to both pairs. On July 20, a grand slam of seven clubs was successful on Board 29. Basking in well-deserved praise

were Ellen Penney and Jane Wilson. Nine other pairs made contracts of six with Audrey Jukes and Mona Brydges racking up two of these small slams. Fine efforts all. Congratulations to the July 13 winners: NORTH-SOUTH

Renewable Power Session August 4 Though still somewhat new to Ontario, the idea of communitylevel renewable energy has been quite successful across the pond in Europe. In countries like Germany, more than 50 per cent of renewable energy is generated by co-operatives and farmers. Similarly, in Denmark three-quarters of wind turbines are owned by co-operatives. Here in the nation’s capital, the Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-op empowers Eastern Ontario residents to support the growth of the local renewable energy sector through responsible, long-term investments that finance projects together as members of a democratic co-operative. With 510 members already on board and 13 solar projects in its ever-expanding portfolio, OREC is now setting it’s sights on Renfrew County. The co-op is working towards building new projects West of Ottawa and it can’t be done without support from the community. The Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-op is holding two information sessions in Renfrew County to discuss the benefits of community-owned renewable energy.

These sessions will discuss trends in community-owned power in Ontario, the economic and societal benefits of cooperativelyowned projects, and the 5 Ws of OREC. There are two upcoming sessions in the Renfrew area. Community-Owned Renewable Power: Information Night in Renfrew Thursday, August 4, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Renfrew Recreation Centre - Games Room - 67 Argyle Street South. Community-Owned Renewable Power: Information Night in Eganville Monday, August 8, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Eganville Legion - 57 Pontiac Street, Eganville. Everyone is welcome to join our free information sessions. Both locations are wheelchair accessible and refreshments will be provided. We ask that participants register through Eventbrite to ensure we have adequate refreshments. Links to the event page can be found online at http://www. orec.ca/renfrew and registration can also be done over the phone by calling toll-free 1 (855) 338OREC (6732).

Summer weekends were kept busy with visitors at Mary’s house On most hot summer weekends, we could expect any number of cousins, aunts and uncles to find their way out to the farm in Northcote. Mother said it was to escape the heat of the city. We never knew who was coming, but Mother was always prepared. Extra loaves of bread, sticky buns and pies filled the bake table and the narrow shelf underneath it. No one would go away hungry! If they came on Saturday and stayed over until Sunday, that meant my three brothers would have to bed down in the tent in the yard, giving up the back bedroom upstairs. Of course, my cousin Richard, a couple years younger than I was, was thrilled to be able to sleep outside with the older boys in a tent. His mother, my aunt Lily, protective of her only child, could be heard slipping out the kitchen door a couple times through the night to make sure nothing had happened to her son, which of course, would waken everyone up. Especially Audrey and me who had been moved to the narrow creton couch in the kitchen. Of course, as soon as the door was open, our old Collie dog Sport would start to bark, and the whole house would be wide awake. But no one seemed to mind, because having a house full of company on a weekend broke the monotony on the farm. The only problem was that Aunt Vanetta, a devout

Mary Cook’s Memories BY MARY COOK

Catholic, insisted on being driven into Renfrew on Sunday morning for Mass, and I wasn’t sure what good it did, because Uncle Johnny, could be heard swearing a blue streak all the way out to his car, and it was a known fact he refused to darken the door of the church, but sat out Mass in his car, blowing blue smoke out the window from his ever-present cigar. And the weekend was like one long party! There was always lots of music and singing, and Uncle Johnny was always telling jokes that Mother laughed at but said weren’t fit for the ears of young children. Aunt Vanetta was like a little bird, small and dainty, with a cloud of white hair and the bluest eyes I had ever seen. Her daughter Aunt Lily was tall and stately, and even though she was coming out to a farm, she arrived wearing white gloves and a beautiful hat, and we never saw the same one twice. I used to dream that she was a relative to the Queen, because of the hats she wore. And I was sure she was pretty rich too... wasn’t she the telephone operator at the

I never used a hanky, except at school or church. The cuff of whatever I was wearing suited just fine. Chateau Laurier hotel? What elegance, and what an important person she was, I would think. My cousin Richard was game for anything. He loved playing in the hay mow, which just happened to be one of my favourite places on the farm, too. We would climb the little ladder in the end of the cow byre and run madly through the hay and then push a pile of it down through the opening in the floor, and jump down the hole, and then do the whole exercise over again. We would be covered with bits and pieces of hay and chaff, and when we had enough, Richard would go find his mother to get a hanky to blow the hay dust out of his nose. I never used a hanky, except at school or church. The cuff of whatever I was wearing suited just fine. Mealtime was a challenge for Mother. Everyone couldn’t sit at the old pine table, so two planks were brought in and put on the backs of chairs, covered with a heavy quilt

and then a couple flour bag sheets, and the overflow ate there. By the time Mother had the meal ready, the kitchen would be like a blasting furnace, but Aunt Vanetta and Aunt Lily said it was cooler than in Ottawa, and dug right in mashing potatoes, making gravy, or cutting pies. We younger ones had to set the tables, fill the glasses with water, and make sure everyone had a chair to sit on. The weekend passed far too quickly to suit me. By late Sunday, the company was ready to go home. And I often wondered if they were as rich as I thought they were. Because before the car left the yard, boxes would be tied to the running board, and they would be filled with meat from the smoke house, a couple cleaned chickens, and bags of vegetables from the garden. Aunt Vanetta always fell into Mother’s arms before she climbed into the car, thanking her and saying something, which at the time meant nothing to me. She’d say, “Thank you Mabel...you’ve saved our lives. We’ll sure eat well for a long time to come.” Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Smokin’ hot duplicate bridge session Lewis MacDonald

Eleven tables competed at MaTe-Way Activity Centre July 27 in a bridge session that saw hot hands, steamy weather, and a false fire alarm necessitating an evacuation of the building mid-afternoon. Firemen blamed some loitering vandals for the disruptive mischief. Play resumed with the whole afternoon chalking up a rare grand slam and fourteen small slams. Joni Fine and Gord McArthur walked away with the grand slam honours. In the Chalk Talk preceding the afternoon’s play, Wayne Daze continued his emphasis on the best leads for defenders. He set out six defender hands and had six pairs determine the most effective leads in each contract. The whole group then analyzed each pair’s decisions. Once again, Wayne reiterated how important it is to pay attention to the bidding for clues to the best lead. A valuable bridge maxim for no trump contracts emerged in the analysis: “Two tells, One asks.”

When there are two unidentified suits, a bid of one of them tells partner you have coverage in that suit; when there is only one unidentified, a bid in that suit asks partner if she has a stopper. Congratulations to the June 27 winners:

Explore Rose Hill Nature Reserve In 2015, the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust was delighted to receive a donation of an additional 258 acres to its Rose Hill Nature Reserve near Denbigh. On Saturday, August 6 we’re planning a dedication ceremony with the unveiling of a new plaque in honour of the families who donated this land. Following the ceremony, we will head out to explore the new Brodey Trail which leads to a beautiful picnic spot at Fufflemucker Pond. Rose Hill Nature Reserve lies within typical Canadian Shield country characterized by very hilly terrain of granite bedrock and frequent rock outcroppings. The Reserve is densely forested except for one small area that was once the location of an old farm where you can still see remnants of an old stone foundation. On a rise beside the old farm stands a magnificent glacial erratic boulder. On the side of this boulder is a large bronze plaque commemorating two family members who died in a car accident after visiting the property back in 1979. The new plaque will also be mounted on the side of the great boulder in honour of the donors from the Armstrong, Brodey, Fincher, Hatton, and Nevers fami-

lies. The Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust (MMLT) has protected over 2,400 acres of ecologically sensitive land in eastern Ontario to date. However, its mandate goes beyond the long-term protection of its properties. MMLT holds a deep conviction that nature offers numerous benefits that contribute to our physical, emotional and spiritual health. To that end, the Land Trust attempts, whenever possible, to allow public access to these properties so that the general public can enjoy their benefits. This Nature Walk will provide an opportunity to visit the property, explore some of its trails and hear the story behind the reason for its conservation. On Saturday, August 6 we’ll gather at the site at 10:30 a.m. Admission is by $10 donation to the MMLT.Following a short dedication ceremony, we’ll head over to the Brodey Trail. Visitors are invited to bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy together at Fufflemucker Pond. For more information about the Land Trust and this property, please visit http://mmlt.ca/protecting-nature/ourprotected-properties/rose-hill-nature-reserve/

McLEAN - In loving memory of our Dad, Ray McLean, August 7, 2015. He never looked for praises He was never one to boast He just went on quietly working For the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken His wants were very few And most of the time his worries Went unspoken too. He was there…. A firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold on to In times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to When times were good or bad One of our greatest blessings The man that we called Dad. Love all your kids

McLEAN – In memory of my loving husband, Ray McLean, August 7, 2015. Those special memories of you Will always bring a smile If only I could have you Back for just a little while Then we could sit and talk again Just like we used to do You always meant so very much And always will do too The fact that you’re no longer Here will always cause me pain You’re forever in my heart …until we meet again Love forever Libby

Remembering her with a smile today, As she was not one for tears, Reflect instead on memories, Of all the happy years. Recall to mind the way she spoke, And all the things she said, Her strength, Her courage, Her caring soul, Remember these instead. The good advice she gave us, Her eyes that shone with laughter, So much of her will never die, But live on ever after. As we loved you, so we miss you, In our memory you are near, Loved, remembered, longed for always, Bring many a silent tear. Ever remembered and sadly missed, Your loving family

Laughs, crafts, saving the world with the Burnstown WI Georgia Quinn

Burnstown Women’s Institute As we enter the lazy days of summer and watch as the sun sparkles and dances on the Madawaska, the glowing members of the Burnstown WI have been taking the area by storm engaging in laughs, crafts and saving the world. We have had a lot of fun over the past year doing something different every month. We have enjoyed going on field trips, travel-

ling to plays, hosting a Quilt Trunk Show, learning about local history, and inviting guest speakers that included women in the military, downsizing and preparing to move just to name a few. We have enjoyed plenty of people for our Monday walking group, and also take pride participating in the Adopt-A-Road Program. From September until June we have welcomed everyone who would like to partake in Craft Day Wednesdays at the Burn-

stown United Church. This year amongst learning a few different crafts and best known for our Figit Blankets for Alzheimer’s patients, the Burnstown WI added a new ‘twist’. We had the pleasure of learning to tie-dye and have started making caps for cancer patients. The WI is putting the ‘cap on cancer’. What is wonderful about Women’s Institutes is the sense of belonging, an outing of socializing, serving your community to the best of your ability and having

fun as you simply ‘make a difference’. It is what you can teach, learn and apply to help others and better the world as a whole. It is the sense of accomplishment that makes you feel with a warming heart. WI is about each and every one of us. It is what you want it to be for you, your community and for the world you want to live in. It is about having fun and doing good all at the same time. Come and join us. Be our

guest the second Thursday of each month as in September we will start to cover a wide range of topics: Alzheimer’s, WWII ‘under the sea’, making a centerpiece for Christmas, Christmas luncheon, where are your ancestors from, card and board games, back to basics with soap making, and honey bees. For more information on attending Burnstown WI meetings or and joining the group, contact Georgia Quinn at georgiaquinn48@ hotmail.com.

Before buying an air conditioning unit or system, find out its energyefficiency ratio (EER). Calculate the EER by dividing the unit’s cooling capacity (BTUs/hour) by its energy requirement (watts). An EER of 10 or more is very good, and 6 or 7 is fair. Remember to buy the smallest capacity unit or system that will meet your needs.

COME GROW WITH US!

Our membership has continued to grow over the last 3 years. This confirms that our mandate to constantly improve our operation is working, and our members like what is happening at Dragonfly. Our golf course has never been in better shape than it is right now: Our irrigated fairways are lush, the rough is weed free, and the greens run pure and smooth. We hear compliments daily from guests who rave about our new tee decks, the landscaping improvements, and widening of some holes making the course a little more golfer friendly. We provide a fun, friendly atmosphere with great customer service and exceptional value. Come see why we continue to grow!
