The Town of Renfrew is considering whether ATV use .COM on designated streets may be a .COM good way to boost tourism and the local economy. Allowing ATVs on designated streets could provide riders an opportunity to access amenities, say town officials. A public meeting will be held Thursday to discuss the issue. Recent changes to the Highway Traffic Act mean individuals can now drive ATVs or side-by-sides within the town, explained Renfrew recreation

Canada 150 grant. Her re-election team is set to spring into action and her campaign signs are at the ready, she added. Asked if she was looking forward to a longer than usual campaign, she would only say she will be happy to
have the campaign officially begin as there has been plenty of electioneering already. “Actually, we tend to operate in campaign mode most of the time anyway,” she noted. See LEADERS, page 2

Legion roof campaign receives Canada 150 boost Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant was busy with a number of Canada 150 funding announcements in the Valley on Thursday, July 30. Renfrew Legion Branch 148 received $13,025 towards its roof fundraising campaign. The Legion needs to raise $25,000 to replace the leaky roof at its Raglan Street facility. On hand for the presentation are, from left Ella Box, Bill McLeod, Ron Kilby, Greg Walbeck, Gallant, Randy Dowell and Huguette Jobin. Gallant also made a presentation of $5,833 to Horton Township and $39,960 for the McNab Centre Park Expansion.

Burnstown United Church is going energy efficient for Canada’s birthday. A Canada 150 funding grant for the church’s renovation was made official on July 30. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant visited the church to announce the
Gallant was first elected the riding’s MP in 2000 and has been re-elected four times with large margins. Attempting to unseat her this time are NDP candidate Dan McCarthy, a labour lawyer from Burnstown, and the Liberal’s Jeff Lehoux, a retired combat medic from Renfrew. Both have been touring the riding and bringing up issues in news releases for the past couple of months. The big question mark is whether former MP Hec Clouthier will run again. The Liberal MP who was upset by Gallant 15 years ago, Clouthier ran as in Independent last time and came second. He has indicated he would seriously consider another run, particularly if it appears it will be a close three-way race nationally. That could potentially give an Independent MP more power, he maintained. Meanwhile, the Green Party of Canada expects to have a candidate in place within two weeks, said regional organizer Jonathan Halasz. He said at least two people have expressed interest in the nomination, but wouldn’t say if they are residents of the riding. If there are others, they should email him at jonathan.halasz@ greenparty.ca, he said. Late last week, rumours swirled
that Prime Minister Stephen Harper would call an Oct. 19 election on the long August weekend (after press deadline). If he does, the 11-week campaign would be the longest in almost 80 years. The last two federal campaigns have been the minimum 37-day (fiveweek) campaigns. first debate
Whether Harper made it official or not last weekend, the first leaders debate is scheduled for this evening (Aug. 6). The debate, organized by Maclean’s magazine will feature Harper, NDP’s Tom Mulcair, Liberal Justin Trudeau and Green Party’s Elizabeth May. It will air at 8 p.m. on Rogers television stations (City, Omni, CPAC) and be livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube as well as MacLeans.ca. Opinion polls taken last week have indicated that across the country the Conservatives and NDP are running at about 33 per cent voter support, with the Liberals at 25 per cent. In Ontario, most polls show the Conservatives in the lead by about five percentage points over the NDP (37-32), with the Liberals in the high 20s.

Renfrew’s Dean Black has received a very special commendation. On July 10, the Honourable Erin O’Toole, Minister of Veterans Affairs, presented a Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation to Black, who retired as a lieutenant-colonel from the Canadian Armed Forces in January 2007 after 30 years of service as a tactical helicopter pilot and senior defence analyst. His last flying responsibilities were as commanding officer of 403 Helicopter Operational Training Squadron in Oromocto, New Brunswick. “Through volunteer efforts, these citizens provide invaluable support to the Armed Forces veteran community, promoting greater awareness of the sacrifices and achievements of Canada’s military veterans, and dedicating themselves to veteran care,” says a press release announcing the commendation. Black works to ensure veterans are recognized for their efforts Continued from page 3
Part of the festivities was a helicopter ride and a journalist from the local paper came out to cover the event. When Black later received the newspaper, he saw a whole centre spread had been dedicated to the reunion, with a photo of Amigo on his helicopter ride prominently featured. Amigo contacted Black shortly after people in the veteran’s hometown saw the article. He had been inundated
by his fellow citizens. Turns out, he had never told anyone about his military service. He told Black that in 1948 his mother’s housed had burned down. “He returned from the war and all his possessions – uniforms, medals, his cherished pilot’s log book – had been destroyed,” he said. “For 60 years he had said nothing.” When Amigo received copies of the article he had hung them all around town – in the grocery store, the Legion, etc. “On that day he hung all
those articles up the whole town came to see him,” said Black. “They were beside themselves to learn all that time they had a hero in their midst.” Black said he decided then and there to find a mint condition Second World War pilot’s log book and populate the book with Amigo’s info, historical photos and other memorabilia. He then invited the veteran back out to New Brunswick for a formal dinner and event at which the log book was pre-
sented. “That’s what this is about. These guys who are silent or don’t understand how much what they did means to all of us,” said Black. He wouldn’t trade his 30 years of military experience for anything. “I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said. “I went to Royal Military College in Kingston right out of high school, graduated in ’81 and went to pilot training. My mother will tell you I wanted to be a pilot ever since I was little.”
He was born in Montreal and since his dad was in the air force, he’s lived in many places. What would he say to those considering a career in the military? “It’s the best decision they could ever make,” said Black. Minister O’Toole paid tribute to those receiving the commendations. “I am honoured to recognize the efforts of Canadians who provide outstanding contributions to military veterans. Their dedication and com-
mitment to serve those who have served Canada speaks volumes about their character and their dedication to our great nation,” said Minister O’Toole. The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation was created in 2001 by warrant of the Governor General and with the approval of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Government of Canada is proud to recognize those who honour the sacrifices and contributions of our nation’s heroes.

Taking voters for grant-ed You think they could have at least waited for the summer holidays to come to an end. But all the signs lead one to believe it’s likely we’ll be officially into a federal election campaign by the time you read this. Of course, we’ve been in an unofficial campaign for some time now what with attack ads flying about, politicians criss-crossing the country and child benefit payouts landing in families’ mailboxes. But the activity has accelerated in the past week with government announcements coming thick and fast. Our own MP made a stop in Renfrew last Thursday to hand out $13,025 to the Renfrew Legion towards their roof replacement fundraising campaign. Gallant braved the highway construction to make five appearances in three hours in Arnprior, McNabBraeside, Renfrew and Horton last Thursday afternoon to dole out Canada 150 grants. Usually, such announcements are spread out to maximize the impact, but with the writ about to be dropped, the money needs to be presented before Parliament is dissolved and sitting members go from being MPs to mere candidates (if they are running again). Handing out money just prior to an election and supplementing it with promises during the campaign is a time-honoured political tradition. All parties, once they take power, can’t seem to resist bribing the electorate with their own money. They do it, of course, because it usually works. And it can work time and time again. Take the Central Station Lofts se-
niors housing project on Hugh Street in Arnprior, which Gallant visited last Wednesday. The 19 subsidized units were built a couple of years ago by two local developers with help from federal, provincial and county funding. When the funding was first announced in the fall of 2011, there were announcements from each level of government emphasizing their contributions to the project. When ground was first broken and there was an official sod-turning in August 2012, the funding announcements were reiterated. And we were reminded about the grants again when the Lofts were completed and the building was officially opened in April 2013. And again more than two years later on July 29 when our MP issued a news release to say she stopped by to see the “results” of $2.2 million in grants for the seniors housing project. That’s a lot of mileage the federal and provincial governments have got out of one project. Don’t get us wrong. We like seeing our riding get its fair share of grant money. But remember, it’s our tax money coming back to us, not a generous gift out of the blue from a sugar daddy. After two of the shortest federal election campaigns on record, you will have plenty of time this year to evaluate the parties, candidates and the leaders as we endure one of the longest campaigns ever. Become informed and make a decision based on policies, character and vision. Don’t vote for the highest bidder. It just encourages them.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Pets, death and educating young children To the Editor:
Summer is often the time when families acquire a family pet. It is a general truth that most pets will not outlive their owner’s lifetime; unless, you acquire a Galapagos tortoise (lifespan 100-150 years) or a sea anemone (100,000 years, give or take a few centuries). Children take the death of a pet personally, either with feeling of abandonment or responsibility for the pet’s demise. Children who only experience the growth of a pet to maturity but fail to participate in the birth and death of living creatures have missed the opportunity to experience the cycle of life that we all belong to. That is our most human characteristic – knowing our lives are finite yet, we continue to go on living each day as though there will be a tomorrow. The problem with the experience is the abrupt nature Sales Manager: Leslie Osborne leslie.osborne@metroland.com Arnprior / WC - 613-623-6571 Renfrew - 613-623-3655 DiSplay aDverTiSing: Paula Inglis - Arnprior/WC- 613-623-6571 paula.inglis@metroland.com Stephanie Jamieson - Renfrew - 613-432-3655 stephanie.jamieson@metroland.com Alicia Whyte – Renfrew 613-432-3655 awhyte@metroland.com ClaSSifieD aDverTiSing SaleS: Adrienne Barr - 613-623-6571 The DeaDline fOr ClaSSifieD anD DiSplay aDverTiSing iS MOnDay 9:30aM
of the event. One morning ‘Puff’ is alive, yet by the day’s end ‘Puff’ is nowhere to be found, having gone to the ‘vet’ for one last trip as an elderly cat. A good way is to allow the awareness to develop slowly and in a more natural rhythm. Do this by asking your child to count; if they can count to 10, then purchase 14 small fish and set up a natural planted aquarium. I can probably count to a million but have difficultly counting 14 actively swimming, identically coloured cardinal tetra (small tropical fish) housed in a well planted 50-gallon aquarium. Don’t purchase guppies, each with a unique colour pattern, combined with children’s acuity of vision, may result in individual names for each fish. You don’t want that, as they will notice when ‘Goldie’ the guppy goes missing.

Children need to learn to take best care of all pets Continued from page 8
What does happen over time is a decline in the number of fish. In a good-sized planted tank with snails and freshwater shrimp, a small deceased fish will be consumed before it is discovered. The child will notice over time, as their numeracy skills improve, there are fewer fish now than there were before. This is the time to discuss the cycles of life. If a live bearing tooth carp is selected (ie. Platty or swordtail), then it is likely some baby fry will have appeared which helps the child accept the notion that “death is nature’s way of making room for birth.” If you want to teach the concept “sooner than later,” perhaps an elderly

family member is becoming ill, then select an “annual fish” like neo tertas – most will not live more than a year. If your child is not yet even born and you want to practice your nurturing skills, then try white cloud mountain fish which can survive severe conditions (36°F for several weeks, that’s 4° F above the freezing point of water) and still live up to 10 years. As your child matures, they can then handle the responsibility of taking care of a hamster – short lived; albino rat, medium lifespan; cat or dog, 10 to 20-year lifespan. It is important for the child to appreciate that these creatures originally came from nature and have sacrificed their freedoms to enhance the quality of our lives. Children need to learn to

take the best care of all pets. Then, when the end comes for your family pet, your child can participate as they now understand that ‘Puff’ has a finite lifespan, which they knew, about their pet even as a kitten. They can exercise special care by feeding favourite foods, spending the day together, grooming and tying bows into its fur, taking pictures, brushing its teeth, washing. Doing all those things that their pet taught
them to become a responsible and loving pet owner. Now, they are ready to say thank you and goodbye to ‘Puff’. We will miss you, but we always knew you could not live forever. Our love for you lives on through the skills we learned and will make us better pet owners of the next generation of kittens, some of which may even be yours. Joseph Schwartz Douglas

Feeling Sorry for yourself? We’ve all done that…”feeling sorry for ourselves”… and the world all of the sudden looks quite different. Not a happy, easy go lucky place anymore. When we look around, everybody else seems to be having a great time laughing and being engaged in conversations. “Feels I am like a magnet…pushing everyone around me away or make them angry…every day!” said a patient. If this sounds familiar, here is a story for you: I’ve been treating a lady who is legally blind and even though we were able to get her eyesight back so far about 25% so she can start seeing again a little bit, some colour and more and more details, it’s long not enough to stay and live by herself. So a few years ago her daughter convinced her to move in with her and her husband. Even though financially she paid her dues, she couldn’t get out of the rut feeling inadequate, not appreciated and actually a huge burden. She felt weaker and weaker as she had lost her independence and over time was afraid to open her mouth as anything she’d say was countered and ended up in a yelling match from her daughter. More and more her guilt, shame and insecurity set in that she even got sick to her stomach, couldn’t eat and was shaking from head to toe. She said: “I cant go on like that! It’s killing me!” We shifted the focus of her treatment to help her grow a “back-bone” again. It took a little while, but last week she was a new person. “I am sick and tired of “pussyfooting” around and haven’t been putting up with the shit here at home!” “Yeah” I thought “Awesome” she finally grew a back-bone. I couldn’t help myself smile. She was beyond excitement and happiness that she found her “voice” again and that didn’t mean that they both now have “yelling” matches…no…not at all! She is capable of being emotionally detached enough and above the situation so to speak, to not let anyone mess with her and doesn’t feel guilty or lesser than others anymore. With her newly gained sovereignty she giggly said: “The funny part is, they even listen to me now…and I don’t have to raise my voice! Let’s keep working on this stuff, so I can live on my own again in a few years!” What a transformation! What a healthy ego can do! And remember GROW YOUR BACK-BONE!

The last week of June was a time of celebration for a large Grade 6 graduating class of over 50 students at Queen Elizabeth Public School. They were celebrating the end of their years in elementary school, and the excitement of moving on to Grade 7 at RCIS. Many wonderful memories were created this year as the QEPS Eagles enjoyed football, volleyball, basketball, and soccer competitions. Student artists had a chance to shine as they demonstrated their talent and creativity at a fabulous art show. A oncein-a lifetime opportunity was had by those students who made it all the way to Global Finals in Tennessee with Destination Imagination. Many students participated in social action, contributing their time, effort and talents to Global Citizenship causes. This included supporting the Ryan’s Well

GRAND ROUNDS Young philanthropist encourages her generation to support RVH Paige Dillabough is sending out a strong message to fellow students across Renfrew and area about an organization close to her heart. Dillabough has spent a lot of time in health care facilities. In January 2003, she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour that left her requiring 56 weeks of intense radiation and chemotherapy and a long recovery process. Spending weeks upon weeks in the hospital ignited a passion to help as a fundraiser for health care initiatives. She has been heavily involved in RCI’s annual Relay for Life events. In May 2013, Dillabough organized a fundraising event in Renfrew to help purchase a scale that benefitted the CHEO clinic at RVH. As a student, she spent time working alongside those who raise funds for RVH on a daily basis for her co-operative education placement in the RVH Foundation office. Foundation staff extends a heartfelt thanks to Paige for all her efforts and to the RCI Coop program.
Dillabough recently shared her thoughts about her experience to inspire others to become involved—no matter how little or large their contribution: “Giving back through volunteering and donations is important and not only makes a difference to the hospital enhancement program but it will also make you feel good about yourself. I have been fortunate to have been a co-op student with the RVH Foundation over the last couple of years and I really enjoyed my work with the Foundation. I use the hospital and I am proud that I have contributed to its success even in a small way through my co-op time with Barb and with the new association between the RCI Relay for Life committee and our new directive to give back to RVH. Every little bit helps. It is up to our generation to take the reins in the coming years to continue the work that is being done by the RVH Foundation to make sure that the hospital continues to grow its services so our grandchildren will have a wonderful hospital to look after them.”
Paige Dillabough chose to fundraise for a new weigh scale for RVH’s Pediatric Clinic. The 50s-style dance-athon she organized raised more than $600. R0762121695

Muskrat Watershed Council hosts AGM Muskrat Watershed Council hosts its second annual general meeting on Saturday, Aug. 8, 9 a.m. to noon at the Cobden Legion, upstairs at 43 Main St., Cobden. Guest Speaker, Dr. Rebecca Dalton, will provide an expert overview of her report, funded by the Cobden Civitan Club, on the 2014 water quality data collected for the watershed in partnership with Algonquin College. The presentation will be of particular interest in light of the recent discovery of bluegreen algae in Muskrat Lake.
The event will feature updates from the fundraising, agricultural and science committees. It’s also election time for the board of directors. Organizers invite members of the public to get involved and stay informed by becoming a member of the council. Membership costs $20 per person, per year. Meeting goers can also support the Legion by purchasing lunch at their barbecue.

An open house information session will be hosted by Trillium Solar Power Cooperative at The Neat Café in Burnstown on Thursday, Aug. 6 from 4-6 p.m. The co-operative was established to give Ontario residents a platform to support the deployment of solar energy in their local communities.
Their goal is to find Ontarians who believe in sustainable development and clean energy initiatives and want to see investment into projects such as solar energy circulate within their communities. Representatives will be in the area to inform residents about the concept of the co-operative and to sign up
members who will then have the opportunity for those interested to participate in direct investment into solar power projects, including a local project. If you are unable to come to The Neat for the open house, more information is available any time at www. trilliumpower.ca .

The staff at the museum is very excited about the month of August. If you or your friends and family members are looking for unique things to do this month, the McDougall Mill Museum has lots to offer! Thursday, Aug. 6 and Friday, Aug. 7 are our very first Fun Dayz. The museum has decided to host this event due to the huge success of the 2015 Kid’s Week, which brought in nearly 200 visitors. Fun Dayz are for kids ages 5-10. Thursday is a Pioneer Theme Day with activities such as making butter, tin punching, and outdoor activities. Kids are encouraged to come in costume! Friday will be a craft/outdoor activity day. On this day, there will be tie-dying; the museum will provide the dye if participants could bring something white to dye such as a t-shirt or bandana. There will also be outdoor games (including water-balloon activities) and other crafts. Snacks and drinks will be provided each day, as the event runs from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. Price is $10 per child per day. Registration forms available on our Facebook page or at the museum. Call 613-432-2129 for questions. Our next upcoming event is the fourth annual Ghost Walk, taking place on Friday, Aug. 14. It is a guided haunted house tour through the museum. Participants can attend one of the two family-friendly tours (8-9 p.m. or 9-10 p.m.) or the scarier version of the tour, happening at 11 p.m-midnight. Tickets are on sale now at the museum, anyone under 16 is $2 and 16+ is $4. Tickets will be sold at
the door, but prices will go up, so get your pre-sale tickets asap.

Bowser and Blue, one of Canada’s foremost musical comedy duos, will perform this Saturday, Aug. 8 in Calabogie. The 8 p.m. show will be held at The Valley Food and Drink Co restaurant at Calabogie Lodge. “We are so honoured to have them performing here on our stage,” says owner Cath Reynolds. “I remember their live music shows I attended in the past and it makes me laugh every time. Comedy and music performance at its best.” George Bowser and Rick Blue write and perform music and comedy. Their latest work, ‘Schwartz’s - The Musical’ inspired by Bill Brownstein’s best-selling book about the Montreal delicatessen, ran for nine soldout weeks at Montreal’s Centaur Theatre. They have appeared in theatres and concert halls across Canada, and from 2007 to 2012 they headlined the Canadian Snowbird Extravaganza concert series, both in Canada and the U.S., returning again in 2013 / 2014. Bowser and Blue recently appeared at the Palmer Rapids Twin Music Festivals and at Yuk Yuks in Ottawa. They have appeared frequently at the Just for Laughs comedy festival and they can often be seen on CBC
television and the Comedy Channel in shows compiled from those appearances. Their Christmas CTV special, ‘Two Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire’, was nominated for a Gemini award. They have written and performed in many theatre shows, including ‘The 25th Century Belongs to Canada’ and ‘The 4 Anglos of the Apocalypse’, a comic perspective on the last 30 years of politics in Quebec. They were collaborative works, written and performed with film-maker and humorist Josh Freed, and award-winning cartoonist Terry Mosher (Aislin). They have recorded with Supertramp’s Rick Davies and Katrina and the Waves, as well as releasing 16 CDs. Bowser and Blue also provided the music for the NFB animated film ‘Scant Sanity’ by John Weldon, and for the TV show ‘Misguided Angels’. The Valley Food and Drink Co. is located inside Calabogie Lodge on the shore of Calabogie Lake. The restaurant offers visitors an opportunity to experience Ottawa valley culture, heritage, music, and, of course, food and drink. “Menus have been designed to highlight the diverse cultural nature that created Ottawa Valley heritage,” says co-owner Byron Hermann. “Recipes have been prepared

Intriguing hands at duplicate bridge
OPEN HOUSE GUIDE
North-South: Joni Fine and Gord McArthur; Ernie Berndt and Eric Brown; Ed McCann and Lew MacDonald. East-West: Carol Sulpher and Dave Sulpher; Bernadette Culhane and Tom Culhane; Mona Brydges and Steve Gray. Players should note that there is no game on Aug. 12. The barbecue planned for the end of the month is postponed until late August or early September. More information to follow. Chalk Talks begin at 12:30 with regular play starting at 1 p.m. The cost of an afternoon of challenging endeavour and fun is $5. Refreshments and snacks are included.
Lewis Macdonald
Players filled seven tables for duplicate bridge at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre July 29 where the pre-game Chalk Talk was all the buzz. Carol Sulpher dealt out four hands for practice bidding demonstrating that players could make a grand slam with each of the hands. The lesson learned was that a hand with voids and length in a couple of suits doesn’t need a very high point count to have slam potential. The team of Ernie Berndt and Eric Brown took home all the slam honours of the afternoon with success at both grand slam and small slam contracts. Congratulations to the July 29 winners: R0013398345

Pipe in the Brine fundraising continues Renfrew Curling Rink launches summer challenge Renfrew Curling Rink
Renfrew Curling Rink has raised more than $50,000 to support replacement of the brine (cooling) pipes at the curling club. The board and our fundraising director are overwhelmed and impressed with the generosity of our members and community. As the Pipe in the Brine Fund climbs higher, there are so many people to thank –members, corporate donors, family members, memorial donors and all the many people in our community
who came out to fundraising events. To all of those who have donated, supported or worked to raise funds - we thank you. At our most recent annual general meeting, we heard that we have another $20,000 to raise in order to have a solid application for the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant program. We need to raise it by Aug. 31, 2015 to make an application this year. Otherwise work will have to be delayed to the summer of 2017. Renfrew Curling Rink is ready to meet the challenge
as it has met many challenges in the last 150 plus years! It is with this in mind that we are announcing the Pipe in the Brine Fund Summer Challenge with a goal of raising $20,000. This is a perfect time to keep our dream alive for a 2016 construction date. All donations small and large are greatly appreciated. Monthly or one time pledges will be gratefully received. Please contact Lee Sharpe, fundraising director, at 613432-8163 or leesharpe@bell. net for information on how to make a donation.

What’s trending on the long weekend? What was and is trending on the August civic holiday? On the August civic holiday in 2007, seven common loons were trending on Garden Lake as reported by Dennis Ladoucear. He says the birds appear early in the morning amid much calling, wing flapping and splashing. They swim around the lake in a long line feeding and preening. An addition to the loon population on Calabogie Lake was trending on the Civic Holiday 2014 with the arrival of a loon chick. Doug Cram shared the photos he was able get of the very small bird floating between its two very protective parents. Cedar waxwings are trending
Deb Stevens sent us this email. Hello Jim and Ila. We are pleased to have cedar waxwings nesting in the horse chestnut tree in our back yard. There are three hatchlings, and the parents are kept busy bringing them their meals. The only downside to this has been that the branch on which the nest sits is resting
JIM FERGUSON Scene from the Hawk’s Eye on my clothesline. I’ve been unable to hang out any laundry for the past few weeks, and our electricity bill will be somewhat higher than normal as a result of using our dryer. Robbin` robin trending
This email sent from “a not impressed Sybil Ferguson.” For two days I have seen a parent robin with a huge orange beak hopping across yard. I thought it a most unusual sight. It must be carrying food, to its young, but there are no fruit that colour in the garden. Then I realized I needed to check my grape tomato plants. This morning when I went to water the plants I was not impressed. Some of the small tomatoes were missing and one of my bush beefsteak tomatoes was on the ground, half eaten, I wanted to blame
it on the chipmunk. Now I am policing my tomato plants in the hope of at least seeing the robber robin and solving the mystery. Albino birds trending
An albino blue jay was visiting feeders on Airth Boulevard Aug. 3, 1992. Janice Brown and Colleen and Wayne Leskie saw the bird. It was entirely white except for some gray-tipped feathers on the wings. This unusual bird is a member of a flock of between 10 and 12 jays, possibly two separate families that have been at the Brown feeders. At the Leskie feeding area it appears with a flock of seven, two adults and five young. The flowers and the feeders at the home of the Valley Carver, Delbert Juby, were the feeding places of an albino ruby-throated hummingbird Aug. 3, 1992. The white was striking, making it easy to follow the flight and the rapid wingbeats of the bird. The bill and legs are pale pink but the eyes are dark, almost black, indi-

cating partial albinism. The bird has visited several of the feeders in the area but took a special liking to the Juby feeders.

Summer camps trending
The Calabogie Day Camp was trending Aug. 1, 1993. Leaders Jody Larocque, Susan Smith and Judy Dubeau had an interesting and fun program for young people in the Calabogie area. Birds, plants, animals, insects and fish were all studied. The Renfrew Housing Authority, now Renfrew County Housing Corporation, had a day camp for all the children living in the houses under the direction of the Housing Authority. Hiking was a big part of the program and it was enjoyed by all. Marie Enright and Nancy Houwen directed the program with help from Cory Bennett and Russ McNulty.

American Bittern are trending In August 2008 Helen Burgess owned and operated a chip wagon in Burnstown. On the civic holiday weekend an immature American bittern arrived and took a liking for fried potato chips. It was unusual for this species to approach an area where there are people and vehicles moving about. But young birds are not very adept at getting their own food and must take their chances at finding food wherever they can. They do learn very quickly but if you have never had to select
your own food it is difficult to tell the difference between a stone and a potato. This particular bird was most likely born in a nest along the Madawaska River and once out on its own wandered around until it found Helen’s chip wagon. These are some of the events that were trending on the civic holiday weekend. Enjoy your birding. Ila and Jim Ferguson, 5313 River Road. Quilts at Bonnechere Museum Aug. 4-9 Bonnechere Museum
The Bonnechere Museum is pleased to welcome Winnie Mason from Braeside to put on the annual Quilt Show, Aug. 4-9. Mason was born and raised in Pembroke, before moving with her husband to Brampton to raise their family and work (she worked as a CMA). They retired to Braeside seven years ago. She has sewn her whole life, and began quilting 15 years ago. Her quilt designs are traditional, with both piecing and hand application techniques used. She will also be displaying four quilts that were shown in the United States at the American Quilting Society and the Houston Quilt Show, and award winning quilts that were shown at the Waterloo Quilt Festival.

Quite a bit of ceremony involved in the day of thrashing Quite a bit of ceremony involved in the day of thrashing Regardless what it said in the dictionary, everyone at Northcote called it “thrashing.” Threshing was a foreign word to the farmers who gathered at the homesteads this time of year to separate the grain from the chaff. To us five kids, the day was almost as good as going off to the Renfrew Fair. We didn’t go to school that day. Every hand was needed on the farm. Chores would have to be done before the sun was up on thrashing day, and certainly breakfast over with and the kitchen made ready for 15 or 20 men Mother would be feeding at dinner. Neighbours came when their own chores were out of the way, and they would gather in the barn yard, leaning on their wagons, smoking their pipes and passing the time un-

til Mr. Briscoe with his team of horses pulling the big thrashing machine came through the gate. And then it was time. Teams of horses would bring in the sheaves from the fields, feed them into the big machine, coaxed into action, once bright red, but now faded from the elements. The noise was deafening as the thrasher chugged away under the blistering hot sun. My three brothers worked right alongside the men, and I, when I wasn’t pressed into service in the kitchen, pulled a chair up to the window, look-
ing out into the barn yard, watching all our neighbours working as one. My sister Audrey had the job of keeping the granite pail of water filled to the brim, with shards of ice from the ice house floating on top. One tin cup would serve all who wanted to stop for a cold drink of water. In the house, the kitchen would be beastly hot. All night the big haunch of beef would be cooking in the oven. The day before thrashing, Aunty, who came each year to help, would have turned out 8 to 10 pies, and they would be on
the bake table, already cut in four. All morning the kitchen buzzed with dinner preparations. The old pine table wouldn’t hold all the men, so three planks stretched across chair backs. The planks were covered with a thick quilt, and then sparkling white flour bag sheets, all to take care of the overflow. Every last plate, cup and saucer, and every piece of cutlery was spread out on the two tables, and it was my job to go outside and into the dark hole under the house, which served as a cellar and was the bane of my existence, and bring up at least four different kinds of pickles from the swinging shelves. There was little formality back then. The full jars were put two to a table, with a big serving spoon at each. By the time the CPR clock struck noon, the thrashing

machine was closing down. Mother had put two wash basins at the back door, with a new bar of Ivory soap. Each man splashed water on his face, gave it a rub with the huck towel, and handed it off to the next in line. They were far from clean when they piled into the kitchen, found a place to sit, and awaited the heaping platters and bowls of food. There were creamed potatoes, carrots, turnips, cabbage salad, jugs of gravy, and of course, platters of hot beef and cold sliced roasted pork. Two plates of fresh bread and butter sat at either ends of the two tables, with Mother and Audrey at the ready to refill the bowls. No one bothered with clean plates when it came time to dole out the pie. The dinner plates looked like they had been washed in soap and wa-
ter, wiped clean with thick slices of bread. There was no loitering after the meal. Mr. Briscoe was the first to push his chair back from the table, and I could hear the thrashing machine roar into action, and the work began again. My three brothers and Father had barely enough energy to do the chores afterwards. But the bags upon bags of grain stacked inside the barn would once again show what it meant to live in a tight community where farmers depended on each other. That, simply, was the way things were done back then. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? and our schools.” The RCDSB has partnered with SRB Education Solutions to allow parents to start the registration process from the comfort of their own home. While parents will still have to come in to either the school or board office to show proof of residency, birth and other documentation,
their children will already be in the system and the visit will be more streamlined and quicker. For more information or to register a new RCDSB student, visit the board’s website at www.rcdsb.on.ca and click the Registration and Transfers tab underneath the Parents dropdown tab.

FLORENCE CATHERINE BOYLE (OWENS)
CLR625330-0806
Florence Catherine Boyle (Owens) passed away peacefully on July 24, 2015 at the West End Villa, Ottawa, Ontario at the age of 91. She was the daughter of the late Florence Mary Owens (Halpin) and Frank C. Owens. Catherine was a resident of Saint John until 2008 when she moved to her daughter’s home in Pakenham, ON. Friendly, outgoing, generous and strong-willed, Catherine was a devout Catholic; a graduate of St. Vincent’s Girls’ High School and Modern Business College. Her first jobs were at the City of Saint John in the Taxation Dep’t. and secretary to the Chief of Police. Catherine was very well celebrated by the auditors at Revenue Canada when she retired after 13 years of service, and was fondly nicknamed ‘Boomer’. An avid bridge player, long serving church choir member and soloist, ardent supporter for the Liberal Party, and volunteer for many charities, especially those supporting children, Catherine always found time to help her coworkers, friends and neighbours. She kept very busy with cooking, baking, knitting, sewing, embroidery, needlepoint and social events. Her focus, however, was always on her 7 children and 11 grandchildren (Allan, Stephanie, Danielle, Jennifer, Shawn, Matthew, Michael, Christopher, Sara, Aaron and Max) whom she carefully nurtured and loved unconditionally. Catherine put her talents to work in all aspects of her life by: volunteering to coordinate the United Way campaign at the Income Tax; by being a member of the executive of Westvale Park housing association and by whipping up a birthday cake if she heard it was someone’s birthday. Swimming was a favourite pastime – in the ocean, in SJ Aquatic Centre, in the Kennebecasis and pools. She won medals at the Senior Olympics. Singing was important to Catherine her whole life, especially in church and at parties. She sang and danced in the Knights of Columbus operettas during the war. Catherine loved to travel using the airline passes from her son, David. She flew across Canada regularly to visit her family and she also traveled to Mexico and Japan. She enjoyed Caribbean cruises with her sister, Frances and winter days with her sister, Betty in Arizona and Florida. Catherine loved to socialize with her cherished friends at Chapel Grove in the summer and go on shopping trips to New York. She is survived by her children Shawn Hayes, Pakenham, ON; David (Alison) Sonora, Mexico; Tom, Victoria, BC; Cathy MacLaren (Sean) Calgary, AB; Paul (Lynne), Quispamsis, NB; and Greg, Victoria, BC; sister, Elizabeth Owens, Fredericton, NB and brother, James F. Owens, Saint John, NB,11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Catherine was predeceased by her son, Patrick; sisters Frances Flood, Kennebecasis Park and Patricia Coughlan, Edmonton; brothers William, Edward and George; sisters-in-law Margaret Owens, Jacqueline Owens, Joan Owens and Jean Owens; brothers-in-law George F. Flood and Hon John C. Coughlan. All are welcome to the Memorial Mass to be held at St. Peter’s Church, Clarendon St., Saint John, New Brunswick on Saturday, September 5th, 2015 at 11:00AM followed by a reception. Donations to charities of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. Condolences/Tributes/Donations www.pilonfamily.ca

They say there is a reason They say that time will heal, But neither time or reason Will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles No one know how many times We have broken down and cried. We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to live without. Some may think you are forgotten Though on earth you are no more, But in our memory you are with us As you always were before

God looked around his garden And found an empty place He then looked down upon this earth And saw your tired face He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best He knew that you were suffering He knew you were in pain He knew that you would never Get well on earth again He saw that the road was getting rough And the hills are hard to climb So he closed your weary eyelids And whispered, Peace be thine It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone For part of us went with you The day God called you home. If roses grow in heaven Lord Pick a bunch for us Place them in our mother’s hands And tell her they are from us. Tell her that we love her and miss her And when she turns to smile Place a kiss upon her cheek And hold her for a while. This week’s puzzle answers in next week’s issue
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 It almost seems as if something is working against you this week, Aries. It could just be your overactive imagination. Channel your energy into a creative project. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 You may get swept away in some lifelike dreams this week, Taurus. It may be difficult to discern when you’re awake or asleep. Don’t get carried away. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, a professional predicament may have you feeling as if you have been run ragged. Regroup, even if it means taking a few days off. This time away is just the remedy you need. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 It’s nearly impossible to stick to your schedule this week, Cancer. Too many things will pop up, and you’ll be spending your time juggling multiple responsibilities. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, your imagination may push you in the wrong direction this week. Daydreaming instead of getting things done is risky. Focus on the tasks at hand. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, your coworkers will come through in a big way this week. Make the most of this opportunitity to work together as a team, and it will pay dividends going forward.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, a little daydreaming can be good for the soul. Give daydreams their due time, but remember to refocus on real life as well. You’re up to a challenge you face this week. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, your schedule is about to clear up so now is a great time to take some time off. You deserve a break after buckling down for so long. Relax and enjoy yourself. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 You know what needs to be done, Sagittarius. You may not have enough manpower to get everything accomplished, so put out a few feelers to see who is up to helping. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, continue with your consistent approach to handling your many responsibilities. You’re juggling a lot these days, and you’re benefitting from your work ethic. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, adhere to your original plan this week, avoiding distraction until the tasks at hand are a distant memory. Your plan is reliable and sure to work. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 It’s nearly impossible to hide your emotions right now, Pisces. So why not share them and get some support from friends and family? 0806
