Tea time at the museum on Aug. 13

Riley Rose Thacker takes her turn behind the water gun at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre’s splash pad on a busy Aug. 2. The weather finally felt like summer for a few days before a wild storm on Wednesday night, see page 3 for full story and more summer fun on page 7.

Oolong, green, rooibos, black, herbal, and white – what do these words all have in common? These are all types of tea. On Sunday, Aug. 13, the picturesque O’Brien Park will be transformed into a beautiful scene for a Tea Party hosted by the McDougall Mill Museum. Afternoon Tea in O’Brien Park is going to be a tea-lightful event and is open for anyone to attend upon purchasing a $10 ticket at the Rec Centre, chamber or museum. This event is from 1 to 3 p.m., and guests are asked to show up 15-20 minutes before to settle in. Jo-Anne Dowdall Brown, an Independent Consultant for Steeped Tea will be providing multiple different types and flavours of tea for guests. It will not only feature delicious teas and treats, but also a performance by local talent Sonya Bergin, tea trivia, bingo, a photo booth, and of course the raffle. To contact the museum about this event, please call 613-432-2129 or email students@renfrewmuseum.ca.

Volunteer appreciation event set for Aug. 19 Horton flood costs incurred to date total $83,511 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Flood clean up in Horton Township is almost complete and council/staff are preparing to show their appreciation to local volunteers. A Flood Appreciation Barbecue and Dance is set for Aug. 19 at 1005 Castleford Rd. from 4 p.m. to midnight. FLOOD COST

According to treasurer Jennifer Barr, costs incurred to date for the flood are $83,511. The township has also met its three per cent levy threshold of approximately $63,000 to be eligible for the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance, which its now in the process of applying for. Sue Klatt chief administration officer for Horton says the township is doing very well with it’s clean up efforts. All of the sandbags were removed approximately a month after the flood. Storie Road has been rehabilitated to pre-flood conditions as well as other pri-

vate roads. “We are now in our last phase of diverting flood related debris to an Ottawa waste facility by Topps Environmental, council choose to divert to save landfill space,” said Klatt. She says the goal was to have clean up finished by the end of August, which they will meet. The township is also thankful for the support it received from the Red Cross, who will be onsite during the event and other organizations for the assistance. APPRECIATION

When council drafted its flood recovery plan part of the discussion was to ensure that businesses, individuals and adjacent municipalities who offered or provided help had the venue to celebrate the community spirit. “Council and staff want to host the event in recognition of the amount of assistance that was provided during the flood and the overwhelming calls and assistance received during and after the flood,” said Klatt.

During the peak of the flooding they had 100s of volunteers and offers of assistance roll in on a daily basis. “It will also allow residents who received the assistance to say thank you,” said Klatt. “If any resident who was grateful for the assistance they received and wants to flip burgers or share their musical talents, give me a call!” A community member is sponsoring the two bands: Fifth Street and Bahoo, Brat and The Commander with ‘Jon Park Wheeler,’ and Klatt is also looking for one more band to round out the line-up. The event is free and as they don’t have a list of everyone who helped out they are issuing an open invite. “We welcome everyone who played a role to come out and stop in to enjoy the music and the free barbecue,” said Klatt. The event is being held at the Horton outdoor rink, which has a covered roof so it will go rain or shine. Also onsite there will be a cash bar and a kids play zone with lending hub activities. To donate, set up a vendor table or to help out contact Klatt: 613-432-6271.

were no injuries however she was quite startled by the situation. “It’s not good the roof came off but in the grand scheme of things it was not on power lines or staff cars, it was quite a shock … and no injuries,” said Galbraith. The roof landed on the store’s main roof leaving several holes and flipped/ rolled down coming to a rest on the stock room roof and their truck at approximately 5:15 p.m. “We were all looking outside and one of our staff members was holding the front door due to the wind and the hail,” said Galbraith. “Then we heard a loud bang!” Former Metroland Media editor John Carter happened by and went into tell them about it. “I was walking back and part of the roof just peeled off,” said Carter. “There was a very sudden burst of wind for about 15 seconds and it blew right off to the right and landed on Scott’s. It was just a sudden burst it was just a really strong wind.” Carter was out for a walk and took cover under the overhang at the old Fraser’s store and said he could hardly see the post office the rain was so heavy. Staff at Wallace’s do not have an estimate of damage yet and they still have a roof as the portion that landed on Scott’s was covering another section of the building.

A severe thunderstorm blew through Renfrew Wednesday, Aug. 2 and the clean up continued for a couple of days. Renfrew development and works director Mike Asselin confirms they have received reports of approximately 10 trees down, with the first call coming in Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. “They were down in various locations including several that were on municipal rights of way and some on private property,” said Asselin. One of the biggest trees down is at the corner of Plaunt Street South and Hall Avenue East. The roots of the large, old tree were visible on Thursday morning, with town barriers out as some of the debris spilled out on the road. “That was definitely a mature tree that was there for a long time,” said Asselin on the age of the tree. “It will change the landscape in that area.” Asselin also received a report of a tree on a house on New Street, however there are no reports of injuries. Asselin advises if a tree is down on a municipal right of way or a road allowance to call the town and they will do an assessment. If it is within private property it is the responsibility of

West Nile virus found in mosquitoes in Renfrew County RENFREW COUNTY & DISTRICT HEALTH UNIT

Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus (WNv) have been found in Laurentian Valley Township around the intersection of Highway 41 and Whitewater Road. This is the first time that mosquitoes have tested positive for WNv in Renfrew County and district since the health unit began monitoring mosquitoes for WNv in 2005. Mosquito traps are set up on a weekly basis across the region during the summer months. There have not been any reported human cases of WNv so far in 2017. “The Renfrew County and District Health Unit has been actively monitoring mosquitoes for West Nile virus,” said Dr. Kieran Moore, acting medical officer of health. “This recent finding of local mosquitoes carrying WNv serves as a reminder that even though the risk is low, individuals should take precautions to prevent bites and reduce breeding sites.” ABOUT WEST NILE VIRUS

WNv is an infection found in birds, and carried by mosquitoes which feed on infected birds. WNv is spread to humans and animals through bites by infected mosquitoes. Four out of 5 people infected will not show any symptoms. Others may see early symptoms of fever, headache, body aches, skin rash, and occasionally, vomiting and nausea. Of those showing symptoms, approximately 1 in 150 may develop more serious symptoms such as stiff neck, confusion, tremors, numbness or sudden sensitivity to light. If you believe you are experiencing symptoms of WNv, please contact your health care provider. The risk of being infected by the West Nile virus is low, but now is a good time to reduce your risk by the following actions: COVER UP WHEN OUTSIDE BY

Wearing light-coloured clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, jackets, long pants, hats and socks, especially between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Applying federally-registered insect repellent (containing DEET) on exposed skin to limit exposure to mosqui-

Doing laundry is most likely part of your every day routine. But did you know how important taking care of your clothes dryer is to the safety of your home? With a few simple safety tips you can help prevent a clothes dryer fire. - Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional. - Do not use the dryer without a lint filter. - Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Remove lint that has collected around the drum. - Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to sustain proper air flow and drying time. - Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted and the outdoor vent flap will open when the dryer is operating. Once a year, or more often if you notice that it is taking longer than normal for your clothes to dry, clean lint out of the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you. - Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks. - Make sure the right plug and outlet are used and that the machine is connected properly. - Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer. - Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed.

Dryers should be properly grounded. Check the outdoor vent flap to make sure it is not covered by snow. Keep the area around your dryer clear of things that can burn, like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc. Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solvents should be laid outside to dry, then can be washed and dried as usual.

A rare snapping turtle was found with a piece of metal driven into its shell, puncturing a lung, in Calabogie last month. It is recovering at a turtle sanctuary. An investigation is underway to find the culprit.

An at-risk turtle was found with a metal spike hammered into its shell — puncturing a lung — in Calabogie early last month. The turtle likely suffered numerous days before found in a creek across from Barnet Cottage. Snapping turtles enjoy a long lifespan but reproduce infrequently. So when it was discovered with what appears to be the latch of a fence gate driven into its shell, a rescue operation was put in place. So was an investigation to find the culprit. According to Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) spokesperson Jolanta Kowalski, the tortoise was transported to a turtle sanctuary in Peterborough. The metal was removed and the turtle remains on antibiotics. She can’t say if it will survive.

“That injury is appalling. It’s even more appalling because snapping turtles are at-risk,” Kowalski said. “Even losing one can have a drastic impact on the population.” She said the investigating conservation officer has no doubt of human involvement. The object was driven into it. Anyone with information is asked to contact MNR or Crime Stoppers. “Let’s hope we can come to a good resolution with this and the turtle is able to return to the wild.” Dan Luker was asked by the area warden to post a photo of the turtle to social media. He said the massive response has been one of disgust and a desire to uncover the perpetrator. “It’s pretty cruel. It looks like someone took a hammer to it,” he said. “Whoever did it had to put a bit of thought into it. Everybody thinks it’s pretty disgusting and justice should be served.” Crime Stoppers’ phone number is 1-800-2228477. MNR’s tip line is 1-877-847-7667.

Have we reached peak Trudeau in this country? It’s easy to love Justin Trudeau. It’s easy to hate Justin Trudeau. He’s polarizing, not in a way that, say, Stephen Harper or Mike Harris were. But you either really dislike him, or believe him to be the second coming. Or you want to like him personally, but don’t jive with how he’s running things. This past week, it all came to a head when he graced the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. And when you saw it, you either swooned or wretched. Or shook your head. Granted, it was an American take on Trudeau, a “Why can’t he be our leader?” contrast with Donald Trump. (They even called the RCMP the Royal Canadian Mountain Police in an early draft ... whoops!) Now, to be fair, other world leaders are more than capable of making complete fools of themselves, too. Ireland’s new leader, Leo Varadkar, went all fanboy on Justin on July 4 in Dublin when he proudly showed off his maple leaf socks for him, like a younger brother seeking big bro’s approval. Varadkar, in his first meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May, pointed to the spot

at 10 Downing St. in London where Hugh Grant had done his dance routine in the 2003 movie Love, Actually. (“Cop yourself on, Leo,” Ireland’s answer to The Onion, Waterford Whispers, wrote.) Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been going around topless in the summertime for years now. On the one hand, who cares if Trudeau introduces a music act on Canada Day wearing a Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Tshirt? On the other hand, while there is a lot of spectacle and performance to be had in politics - and few do it better than Trudeau he is a fallible being who had let us down on many fronts (proportional representation, a muddy foreign policy, Omar Khadr, skyhigh deficits.) One of the more damning lines about Trudeau’s cover story came from a Vancouver cartoonist, J.J. McCullough, writing in The Washington Post, who said, “It is the luxury of foreigners to treat politics of other countries as parable, entertainment, or escapist fantasy. Actually living in a country run by a social media celebrity is a lot less fun.”

engaged, the site was chosen, and M.J. Sulpher Ltd., a Renfrew contractor, was engaged to build the club house. The nine-hole course was officially opened on May 24, 1930. In 1945 a cottage was built at the first tee to accommodate caterers and the pro. In 1958 excavations were undertaken under the present club house and new washrooms, lockers, and heating were added. The first nine holes and club house are on the west half of lot 23 and date back to 1856 when it was deeded from the Crown to William Peever. In 1903 the lot was purchased by James Cole, and in 1914 by Narcisse Lapointe. The Lapointes remained until 1928 when they sold to Andrew

Crozier, who in turn sold to the Renfrew Golf Club in 1929. Golf club notes reveal that 10 cords of wood were purchased from Andrew for $70, and he was paid $10 to remove his ice house. Ten dollars was realized from the sale of a pig-pen and $100 from the barn. The east half of the lot, originally deeded in 1860 to William McWhitty (McQuitty) was acquired by the Golf Club from Bernard Luker in 1972 and the course enlarged to 18 holes.

Right now black bears are busy devouring the fruit of blueberries and other plants. able amounts of time. It was fascinating to see such large animals dining on tiny berries. When feeding on Blueberries, a bear would keep its head low to the ground and sometimes use a large paw to pull a berry-laden bush towards its mouth. The bears never seemed to bite off chunks of bushes and instead used their thick lips and tongues to pull berries from them. Whenever a bear raised its head to scan for danger, unlike a Moose browsing on vegetation, leaves and twigs never dangled from its mouth. There is a reasonably good crop of Blueberries this year in Algonquin and Black Bears are certainly aware of it. However, bears were not alone in enjoying the fruit. Dozens of American Robins and Blue Jays also devoured the berries, and they will soon be joined by Cedar Waxwings. While it might seem that these animals are exploiting berry-producing plants, the real

story is the complete opposite. When birds or bears devour Blueberries, they are interested only in the sugar-rich pulp that surrounds the seeds. The seeds pass unscathed through the animals’ digestive tract and leave their body with the droppings. When this happens, the plant has succeeded in sending off its seeds to a new location, which is the ultimate goal of any plant. Animals do more than unknowingly disperse seeds of berry-producing plants. They also supply them a nice bed of fertilizer! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca

Respond helpfully to domestic violence To the editor: We have all at some point in our life experienced personal hardship and adversity. For many of us we doubt our ability in how to support a relative, friend or co-worker when they find themselves in a crisis. The uncertainty of whether we should get involved is often compounded by our hesitation of knowing, what can we do to help? It is not because we do not care, it is more often mistrust in our own knowledge of what someone is experiencing. This is particularly true of domestic violence, especially if it is happening within the workplace. You know and “feel” something isn’t right. You have seen warning signs. Your co-worker is often late for work, or missing work, they avoid you, you have observed small bruises, you sense emotional stress. It is reported (Stats Canada) that one in three workers experience emotional abuse in the form of stalking by text or phone, and harassing at the workplace itself. Often employers will see a decline in job performance due to workers feeling anxious, fatigued and fearful of losing their employment. There are ways in which you can support a co-worker, family and friends who are experi-

encing domestic violence. Listen without judgment, blame or criticism. Verbalize you believe them and reaffirm they are not responsible for the abuse they are experiencing. Once you have established their trust you are in a better position to advocate and encourage them to seek out the following resources: Bernadette McCann House: call the 24/7 Crisis/Support Line at 613-732-3131 or visit the website at www.wsssbmh.org. A number of events are marking the passing of summer. Nights are cooler and the days shorter. Bird song has all but ended and blackbirds are gathering in increasingly large flocks. And currently the fruit of Raspberries and Blueberries is ripening. The maturing of fruit is a welcome event for many animals. Eastern Chipmunks will soon start stashing away larger items such as Chokecherries for winter consumption. Cedar Waxwings are currently nesting so that their young can soon exploit the rich bounty. And Black Bears are feasting on berries in order to put on fat that will not only help keep them warm in the months to come but will more importantly provide nutrition next spring when they arouse from their winterlong dormancy. Black Bears are large carnivores that generally pose little risk to humans. Still, it is always best to treat them (as we should any animal) with respect and keep some distance from them. Thus, recently when I was in Algonquin Park photographing bears for an upcoming book, I used a long telephoto lens and kept close watch on their body language for any sign of distress or alarm. Now, it isn’t easy to sneak up on a bear for these fascinating animals see well and have remarkable hearing and a well-developed sense of smell. Thus, only a handful of my recent encounters with almost twenty different bears ended up providing good photo opportunities. Once a bear became aware of my presence, it would usually quickly bound away with surprising speed. Sometimes curiosity would cause one to stand up on its hind legs to gain a better view of the intruder before vanishing into the woods. But I was able to gain good views of a few bears in action and watch them for consider-

Don’t forget the crown! Miss Teenage Eastern Ontario, Sophia DeCarle, is packing her bags and getting ready to represent this area on the national level. She is off to the Miss Teenage Canada Pageant in Toronto from Aug. 7 to 13. The recent grad from Madawaska Valley High School, will attend the University of Ottawa in the fall, is focused on representing this area. “I’m really excited, I feel it’s a great opportunity and I’m happy to come from this pageant, because it is a pageant with a purpose,” said DeCarle. She is very passionate about promoting childhood cancer awareness, which is the main platform for the local pageant. Her goal while at the pageant is to learn and grow. “I want to take the experience and cherish the memories,” said DeCarle. “I want to use the skills to help me in

Her Aug. 1 ‘Street Chic’ entry focuses on a number of stores in downtown Renfrew, including Chanto and Co., Scott’s Shoe Store, Keeping Company, A Dash of Fab, the Shoe Lounge and Heartsong Yoga. “I find all of the businesses are unique and it’s always fun (in downtown Renfrew),” said DeCarle, who wanted to focus on family-run shops. “There’s so much history in Renfrew.” Gearing up for the weeklong event, she says she needs to focus on being herself. “I know I am unique and I wouldn’t be here without the help from the community.” As Miss Teenage Eastern Ontario, she has attended a number of local events — one of the most memorable being the Renfrew Home Show. “I really enjoyed it because it was more relaxed, and I had a chance to visit and get to know people in the community.” She is reaching out for support while she is at the Miss Teenage Canada Pageant for the people’s choice award and encourages everyone to vote. “Follow my Facebook page for the link,” said DeCarle. “I’ll need the community’s help Tiffany Lepack/Metroland The Miss Teen Ontario East Pageant committee, which hosts the event in Renfrew and every vote matters.” DeCarle’s Facebook page is Miss Teenage Eastern Ontario 2017 every spring, hosted a Good Luck Send Off event at Coco Jarry’s in Renfrew on Aug. and her blog is http://missteeneasternontar3 for Sophia DeCarle. io.com.

Renfrew resident receives letter from the Vatican TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Pope Francis is called the ‘People’s Pope’ and he has reached out and touched one local devote Catholic. Renfrew’s Lawrence Mahusky wrote a letter to him in early March to tell him “How happy I am to celebrate your anniversary as our beloved Holy Father.” Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who hails from Argentina, is the first Pope of the Americas and was elected Supreme Pontiff on March 13, 2013. Mahusky received the reply on July 25, which he thought was pretty good. “It just affirms your way to God is your way to God. And to hear from your Pope that he does indeed care for his people and what they are doing for Christ encourages you to keep discerning and offering up my gifts of music and drama,” said Mahusky. When he first got the envelope he thought it might be a Catholic newsletter. “I turned it over and something said oh this might be from the Holy Father! I took it inside and sure enough it was from the Holy Father!” said Mahusky. As to why he is the ‘People’s Pope.’ “I feel he doesn’t push things aside, he’s for the people,” said Mahusky. “A lot of people are rejoicing because he is so kind and willing to do activities for the poor.” Mahusky passionately shares the well-known stories of the Pope going to homeless shelters to help feed them, or paying for a pizza dinner for them. “It’s such a gratefulness that someone is very caring for what your bringing to the table,” said Mahusky. “All jobs are challenging but he takes the time to see and hear the person, which is very grateful himself.” Mahusky is well known in the Renfrew area for sharing his musical talents with local youths at a variety of music and drama camps.

In the letter he says that God has given him the talents of music and drama that he often shares. “I sing at two masses a week so that would make me a pretty devote Catholic!” With the letter he also sent his Broadway CD Lawrence Mahusky Live so he could share his musical talents. “I feel in this day and age we all have different gifts, mine being music and theatre. I wanted to share these gifts with him knowing he’s very appreciate of our roles as cantors and choir directors,” said Mahusky as to why he wanted to send the letter. The reply acknowledges the gift specifically, it states: “His Holiness Pope Francis is Tiffany Lepack/Metroland pleased to acknowledge the kind letter and gift which he received. McNab-Braeside seems to be following in the footsteps of Arnprior by having a village’s main street repaved. In Braeside, River Road’s rehabilitation began in late July and will finish up in mid to late August, according to County of Renfrew public works director Steve Boland. The project will cost county taxpayers $460,000. The township will contribute to rebuilding sidewalks. Some residents may believe other roads deserved fixing first, but Boland said the county follows a particular formula to determine priority. Volume of traffic plays a role, but so does getting ahead of repairs. It is cheaper to do minor work and delay a full reconstruction.

“It was time to do a rehabilitation before it got worse,” Boland said. “It would have been much more expensive.” The township follows the same principle, according to public works director Ryan Frew. A combined reconstruction and rehabilitation of Scheel Drive, between McLean Drive and Hwy. 417 should be finished in mid September. It will cost $1.1 million and include new culverts and a widening of the road. Four others will be resurfaced before the end of August: McLeod, Meyers, Mountain View, and part of Pinegrove. That will cost township taxpayers $160,000. In September and October, rehabilitation will take place on Kippen, Deerfield and Lorlei to the tune of $360,000.

Entrepreneurial summer spirits set sail in Renfrew County A group of enthusiastic young entrepreneurs recently gathered to meet with Enterprise Renfrew County staff and business community mentors for the official launch of the 2017 Summer Company Program. The evening centred on learning what it takes to be a successful businessperson, and how to effectively pitch their product or service to potential clients. This year, six students from across the Ottawa Valley were successful in earning a Summer Company award to run their own business during the summer. To qualify for the program, the students had to develop a comprehensive business plan including market analysis, operations and financial feasibility. Instead of working in a summer job for someone else, these students decided to put their exciting ideas into reality creating their own businesses and becoming self-employed entrepreneurs. Colleen Sadler, Enterprise Renfrew County business consultant, spoke to the essence of the program. “Youth and young adults hold the key to a bright future in Ontario. More employment opportunities will result across our province if young entre-

The Renfrew and Area Seniors’ Home Support executive is made up of, from left, in front, Dave Bennett, president and Horton Township representative), Jasper Lafrance, treasurer, Jack Ledger, Carol Ann Simson, past-president, Joanne McDonald, secretary, Admaston/ Bromley Township representative, and in back, Andrew Evans, Town of Renfrew representative, Bob Johntson, Rand Elliot, vice-president, and Judy Ewart, executive director.

Renfrew & Area Seniors’ Home Support celebrates 30 years A vital local agency — Renfrew & Area Seniors’ Home Support — is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Officials recognized the milestone at its annual general meeting in June. President Dave Bennett noted the special anniversary. “Thirty years of caring for seniors of Renfrew, Horton, Greater Madawaska Admaston/ Bromley, McNab/Braeside, and Whitewater Region,” he said. “Thirty years of dedication by staff, board of directors, and, most of all, the community volunteers that are the heart of our organization, in our mission to preserve the independence of seniors and adults with disabilities by enabling them to remain as active as possible for as long as possible in their own homes and communities.” The agency and available services have grown over the years to include providing transportation, visiting with friends, telephone assurance, home maintenance, frozen meals, grocery delivery, and client intervention and assistance. Government funding, along with fundraising, has ensured the services are available to all who require them, he said. “And, to celebrate our 30 years of work, our fundraising committee has asked everyone to consider supporting their request of 30 for 30! This asks you to donate $1 per year for the previous 30 years!” he said. Plans for this year include a move to the Golden Age Activity Centre, with new offices and a boardroom. “As president, I would like to relay a special thank-you to staff, the board of directors, advisory committee, and all the volunteers for all our success in the 2016-17 year,” said Bennett. “No matter what program we at Seniors’ Home Support provide, it could not be done without you and your commitment and dedication to helping others.” He also thanked area municipal representatives for their support and contributions. The goal is to work with our government funding partners to get as many sustainable dollars as possible through grants and increased funding. “In closing, I would like to rewrite some JFK words ... This increase in the lifespan and in the number of our senior citizens presents Renfrew and Area Seniors’ Home Support with increased

opportunities. The opportunity to draw upon their skill and wisdom, and the opportunity to provide the respect and recognition they have earned. It’s not enough to merely add new years to life. Our objective must also be to add new life to those years.” Executive director Judy Ewart said 2016-17 was a time for the organization to “catch our breath, incorporate new business practices, and start to learn more about the new projects on the horizon”. In the past fiscal year, the agency supported 926 individuals through programs and 310 members took part in activities at the Golden Age Activity Centre. “While we continued to serve a large number of clients through our transportation program, we did see a decrease in the number of drives requested,” she noted. “These decreases were offset by increases in demand for our frozen meal and friendly visiting programs.” The Client Intervention and Assistance program remains strong, helping 619 individuals, many with their income tax returns. The Golden Age Activity Centre had a successful year with 13,353 program attendances and 1,261 drop-ins for a total of 14,614 individuals attending the programs or dropping by. “Volunteers are a vital part of our program — providing services and programs, hosting, assisting in the office, fundraising, and serving on the board of directors and advisory committee. This past fiscal year, 84 Home Support volunteers donated 6,355 hours and 40 Golden Age Activity Centre volunteers donated 3,479.5 hours,” she reported. “Music is a very popular program at the Activity Centre and 60 different entertainers and musical groups have given their time during the year to entertain the members.” It was a successful term for fundraising, as well. “With the support of our community, clients, and fundraising committee, we were able to reach our Home Support fundraising target of $42,000,” said Ewart in her report. “We are indebted to the Helping Hands Thrift Store for the many financials donations they have made to our organization. The Golden Age Activity Centre has had a successful year fundraising thanks to the support of the members and the community.”

The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, August 10, 2017 19

Weather doesn’t have to damper summer experiences the Valley If you had to choose one word to describe this year’s summer, chances are you would choose the word “wet.” A recent cartoon put it perfectly: “To think it only rained twice this summer! Once for 45 days and again for 35 days.” That sounds about right. The summer to date has definitely been a soggy one. For many it has made it difficult to get excited about being outside and doing the

things we normally associate with summer; hot lazy days on the beach, family camping trips or outdoor adventures followed by local brews and sizzling barbecues on the deck. Luckily, there is no need to lament the dog days of summer. Rain or not, there is never a shortage of activities for you to do in the Ottawa Valley. It is always dry and a comfortable 10 degrees in the Bonnechere Caves. An Ottawa Valley in-

stitution, the caves offers an incredible opportunity to wander paths underground and learn the stories of our earth from knowledgeable tour guides. Wear low heels; pack a picnic lunch, your camera, and your sense of adventure. Looking for indoor adventure? Both Renfrew and Eganville have escape rooms that are fun for folks 12 years and up. Gather up a team and test your mettle as you use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles, find clues, and escape the room within a set time limit. Renfrew County is home to over 20 museums, each with their own unique collection and programming. The Canadian Clock Museum in Deep River is celebrating 150 years of Canadian clocks with a special tour. The Champlain Trail Museum and Pioneer Village in Pembroke is currently hosting a remarkable exhibit on The Life and Legacy of Sir Arthur Currie. Whichever museum you decide to visit, be sure to ask for a copy of the 2017 Renfrew County Museums Network Passport. Visit three or more museums in the Ottawa Valley and receive an instant gift and a chance to win a grand prize. For those who are not afraid of getting a little wet, whitewater rafting might be just the experience needed to make this summer one to remember. Rain or shine, the Valley’s whitewater rafting operators are taking adventurous souls out for an adrenalin filled day on the water. In their 42 years in business, Wilderness Tours has never once cancelled a trip because of the weather! Once out on the water, rafters are going to get wet anyway ... what’s a little bit of rain when you’re bouncing over the mighty rapids of the Ottawa River? Embrace the wet and celebrate the river. After all, the Ottawa Valley is the Whitewater Capital of Canada!

Whitewater rafting down the Ottawa River is great fun for anyone 50 lb. and up. For the smaller members of the family, Madawaska Kanu Centre’s family rafting trips down the Madawaska River are just the ticket. Suitable for those aged two years and older, these two hour trips are a great introduction to whitewater adventure. If you are looking for other ideas or recommendations of things to do this summer, be sure to visit one of the 12 Visitor Information Centres (VICs) located throughout Renfrew County. VIC staff underwent a tourism focused Customer Service Workshop and three day Familiarization Tour prior to the summer tourism season. Hosted by the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association (OVTA), and sponsored by Discount Car and Truck Rentals, the FAM Tour allowed VIC staff to experience firsthand a number of the region’s tourism offerings. Despite the rain, they participated in whitewater rafting, horseback riding, hiking the Eagle’s Nest Lookout in Calabogie, touring Elements Luxury Tented Camp and Nature Spa, SUPing at Petawawa Point, testing out the Construction Yard Bike Park in Petawawa, (un) successfully solving the riddles of Escaping Renfrew, checking out the blueberry bushes at Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch and learning all about the local food and forage programming behind Calabogie Peaks Resort’s new menu. It was an incredible three days and helped prepare our tourism ambassadors for the summer tourism season. So don’t let a little rain get you down this summer. The Ottawa Valley has tons of opportunities for you to experience indoors or outdoors, or even underground! After all, bad weather always looks much worse through a window. Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Women’s League celebrates Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Women’s League celebrated the 50th anniversary of its establishment as a council on June 21, during its annual awards dinner at the Renfrew legion. The theme for the evening was “Inspired by the Spirit, Women Respond to God’s Call” which proved appropriate since we were honouring our founding members. The following courageous and dedicated women still alive today are Rita Burnett, Viola Chaput, Marilyn Holmes, Veneta MacDonald, Genevieve McCallum, Lois Murphy, Giovanni Stavole, Jeanette Holmes, Teresa Manion, Gerarda Mulvihill, and Mamie Siroski. We were blessed to have three present with us; Rita Burnett, Lois Murphy and Giovanna Stavole. They were acknowledged for their gifts to the league over the years, presented with a corsage and given a medal and prayer card of our patroness, Our Lady of Good Counsel. Following a delicious turkey dinner catered by the Renfrew Legion Auxiliary, seven new CWL members were welcomed by president Nancy Guyea and those present Carol Ann Walters and Doris Long, were gifted with the Insignia pin. The members prayed the Litany of the

Supher receives Maple Leaf Service Pin At St. Francis Xavier Catholic Women’s League (CWL) Council’s June dinner the Maple Leaf Service Pin was presented to Carol Sulpher. This pin is intended for presentation to members who have served the League in an exceptional or meritorious manner. It recognizes a member who has made a specific high impact in a particular project, or a member who has given exceptional service to the League over many years. The recipient, Sulpher, has done both. In this past year, she has orchestrated the English Second Language program for Renfrew’s Syrian refugee family. Assisting with the sponsorship was our CWL Year of Mercy project, and that, in itself would make her worthy of receiving the Maple Leaf Pin, but Sulpher has served the league exceptionally in many capacities in her 26 years as a member, including two years as president in 1993 -1994. League acknowledging and giving thanks for the many gifts of our council members. Several members were acknowledged for their many years of service to God and Canada through the Catholic Women’s League and those present were presented with pins respective of their years of service by Guyea. Peg Clemow received a pin for 45 years and Peggy Roy received a pin for 20 years. The prestigious Bellelle Guerin Award was bestowed upon Pauline Hughes in recognition of her contributions and tireless work in keeping the spirit of the Catholic Women’s League alive over the past 41 years as a member and also her work in Our Lady of Fatima Parish. She was surprised by the presentation, but truly deserves to be recognized.

Our guest speaker, Judy Cobus, manager of Volunteer and Community Services from Hospice Renfrew, gave a moving presentation about the goals of hospice and the care and comfort given to residents during their stay whether for respite, pain management or end of life journey. She also explained how a person can be referred to Hospice Renfrew. It was a very informative and heart warming presentation. The evening ended with a prayer invoking the Holy Spirit to bless us with the gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and awe of the Lord. Each member was invited to take home a carnaSubmitted tion. Submitted by Our Lady of Fatima Catho- Peggy Roy receiving her 20 yr. CWL pin from Nancy Guyea. lic Women’s League

RMH announces art contest winners

The Rocky Mountain House Restaurant (RMH) recently held its first ever Art Contest. RMH has been the site of many ‘paint nights’ for local charities. This was a natural progression to spotlight art in our community. Teaming up with the Renfrew Art Guild, owner Amy Rule put out the challenge as part of the 150 celebrations in our town. The theme in any medium was Rocky Mountain. There were 20 entries, some with the Rocky Mountains and some with the painting of the restaurant. The paintings were displayed in the restaurant for 10 days in which the patrons could vote on for People’s choice. The paintings were judged and the winners were as follows: Dwyene MacNabb first, Frank Harper second, and Jim Robertson third. In the Rocky Mountains category Ed Goddard won the RMH award for the fabulous painting of the restaurant, and David Lawrence won the Peoples Choice Award for a wonderful black and white painting of the restaurant. Honourable mention went to Brandy Thompson for her painting in which she combined both themes. Con-

Valley boy shows Redblacks made right move with historic first- ever pick JAKE DAVIES jake.davies@metroland.com

Spending his first five years of life in the Valley was all Nolan MacMillan needed to entrench the work ethic and community spirit needed to be the Redblacks’ first ever draft pick, setting the foundation for a team that has won one Grey Cup, competed in two and brought football back to Ottawa. MacMillan, a six-foot-six, 294-pound offensive lineman who lines up at guard for the Redblacks, spent the first day of his life in the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital. “I was in Arnprior for about 24 hours and then moved to Renfrew until I was five,” the 26-year-old said. “My younger brother was born in Renfrew.” After kindergarten, the MacMillan family moved to the Toronto area. It wasn’t until he attended St. Michael’s College School in Toronto that he was able to apply those Valley-instilled characteristics to football. “They have a great football program there; I won three championships in four years,” MacMillan told Metroland Media following the 31-31 tie against Calgary at the Redblack’s season-opener on June 23. “It’s a tremendous winning culture, where I was instilled with a hard work ethic by coach Paul Forbes. All my best friends are from high school football.” From there, MacMillan spent a

Although, hard work, dedication and skill had more to do with it than luck. MacMillan was a decorated member of the University of Iowa Hawkeye football team — a program known for its offensive line. In his 2013 senior year, he was a member of the Academic All-Big Ten team for the second time in his career

while playing right guard in five games. In 2012, he played in nine games playing the left guard, left tackle and right guard positions during the season. He missed the final three due to injury. In 2011, he was named to the All-Big Ten third team in the pre-season. In 2010, he was named to the Freshman AllAmerica pre-season fourth team as well as several other pre-season all star teams by outlets covering college foot-

ball. He was a starter at right guard throughout the season but missed several games due to injury. MacMillan was drafted ninth overall by the Redblacks in 2013, with the expectation he would play for Iowa in his last year. He signed his first contract with the Redblacks on May 28, 2014. Since that time, he has played in 45 regular season games for the Redblacks — every one in 2014 and 2015, and seven last year as he missed several due to injury. Although he missed more than half of last season, MacMillan made the most of his time away from the field by working in the community. Last year, MacMillan was one of nine CFL nominees for the Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award. The award is presented to the Canadian CFL player who best demonstrates the attributes of Canada’s veterans: strength, perseverance, courage, comradeship and contribution to Canadian communities. As MacMillan rehabbed a wrist injury, he led all Redblacks players in hours spent working in the community. MacMillan served meals to the homeless, helped out as a minor football guest coach on several occasions and participated in various school assemblies to engage and mentor youth in the National Capital Region. General manager Marcel Desjardins says what’s important during the draft is if the player can play. “To have him play for us from the get-go and contribute right away was

a big boost for us,” Desjardins told Metroland Media on July 5. “He came from a good pedigree, even before Iowa. He has athleticism, flexibility based on his sound football knowledge. He gives us some flexibility even within a game. If there’s an injury, we know we can move him to tackle, if necessary. It definitely helps our depth, (as) tackle is the harder position to play. The offensive line is the foundation of everything we do on offense. So, they might not get the glory in the papers, but we know they are important to us.” But an athlete who is good in the community, is often good in the locker-room too. “It’s very important to us,” Desjardins said. “It shows the character, not only as a football player, but as a person. It’s important for him to get out and share what he has learned and be a positive role model. In order to do that, you have to spend a lot of time in the area in the off-season.” MacMillan says he’s visited the Valley a couple of times since playing with the Redblacks, but no longer has family there. When asked if he’s considered a Valley ambassador for football, he says he’ll “have to work on that.” But Desjardins, who has relatives in Pembroke, doesn’t quite agree. “It’s nice to know our reach has expanded to the Ottawa Valley,” he said. “And you (the Upper Ottawa Valley) should take credit for him, he’s been a good contributor for the Redblacks.”

New Dragonfly member scores first hole-in-one BILL RAINBOTH Dragonfly Golf Links

Great things happen when you join Dragonfly Golf Links! Just ask Giuseppe (Joe) Marzano, new member to Dragonfly, who had his first holein-one on Thursday, Aug. 3. His great shot occurred on the fifth hole with an eight iron. I will be requesting tips from Joe … as I am still “patiently” awaiting my first hole-in-one. Dragonfly hosted its third, and best, Open Mik night on Monday, July 31. I say “the best” because we

had our largest complement of performers, who all knocked it out of the park! Special thanks to Mike Asselin who supplied the sound equipment on this night! The next Open Mik is the Monday, Aug. 28. Hope to see you all there. The often “rained-out” Monday night men’s league was back on track this past week. Layton Knight-Locke Contracting fabricated the lowest gross and net score of the night. Neal Gibbons was closest to the pin on #5 and Glenn Wilson was closest on #7. On Tuesday, the Dragonslayers

slayed the “Dragon” (15th hole at Dragonfly), and the other eight holes as well to win B flight. TF Custom Signs won A flight for the second week in a row with a “picture-perfect” round of their own. Closest to the pin were Mike McDonald and Butch Villamere, on #13 and #18 respectively. A wicked thunderstorm blew through on Wednesday, putting the men’s league in jeopardy. Six out of the 12 teams patiently waited for calmer skies. Home Health and Supply had one of the lowest rounds of the year with a gross score of 58 to blow away

Iob named CCHL coach TIFFANY LEPACK

tlepack@metroland.com

Tony Iob is moving up from the Valley. The Renfrew native and former Arnprior Packers coach is the new head coach and director of hockey operations for the Cumberland Grads of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL). The announcement was made on July 31 via the clubs Twitter account. Most recently Iob was the head coach of the Packers and on Friday, July 28, Packers general manager Brent Sylvester announced that Iob had stepped down from the club “effective immediately.” In an email statement Packers general manager Brent Sylvester says the entire Packer organization wishes the best of luck to Iob and is excited for him. “Tony has left the Packer organization on an upswing and its players in good place for us to continue and build off of last year’s success and into the future,” said Sylvester. “We thank Tony for his time as the Packers bench boss.” Sylvester does not currently have a replacement but confirms they have it narrowed to three candidates. “I am hoping to have a replacement announcement by next Tuesday (Aug. 8),” said Sylvester The Packers training camp is set for August 15,16,17. In a press release on the CCHL website it is noted this is Iob’s third position in the CCHL as he was previ-

ously with Pembroke and Kanata. “Cumberland is a very well-run organization (and) the roster looks fantastic so far,” said Iob, who played in 850 professional games over a 16-year playing career, in the release. “Sylvain Favreau (former coach) has put a good team together, so I don’t feel like I’m walking into a time bomb — this team is going to be competitive.” In the same press release Grads owner and general manager Steve Barban praised Iob’s on and off ice skill. “Tony is a natural leader and possesses all the qualities of an excellent coach,” said Barban. “As good an athlete and leader that Tony is, he’s an even better person which is number one in my books — we’re very pleased to welcome Tony to Grads country.” Iob grew up in Renfrew near the Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School rink, which no longer exists but was key in his hockey development. The Italian-Canadian dual citizen also scored two goals during the 2006 Winter Olympics for Italy. He has also coached for the Renfrew Timberwolves and the University of Ottawa. In 2012 he told the Renfrew Mercury his childhood dream was to play in the NHL and now as an adult he dreams of coaching in the NHL. With the new position he is one step closer to achieving that dream. -with files from Steve Newman

the competition. Matt Brennan was closest to the pin on #13, and Jack Ferguson was closest on #18. We had four closest-to-the-pin winners on Thursday Ladies Night: Linda Kidd was on target on #5, Erin Thompson “hit the mark” on #7, Christine O’Hara used surgicallike precision to win #13, and Judy Dubeau went “Boo yah!” on #18. Winners of A flight were the Birdie Bandits, Partee of Fore are still celeSubmitted brating their victory winning B flight, and the Garden Lake Loonies “lit up” Joe Marzano got a hole in one at Dragonfly on Aug. 3. C flight.

Carter Jarrett places third in Ontario KEVIN SEBULSKI Renfrew Golf Club

Renfrew Golf Club’s Carter Jarrett placed third in Ontario at the U13 Junior Boys Championship. After firing a first-round 75, Carter came back with a fantastic -1, 71 to finish all alone in third place. Carter made birdies on his first and 17th holes along with only one bogey on the 16th. Congratulations Carter! Both Ladies and Mens Rec Leagues finished their two-week cycles this week. On the ladies side, Annie’s Angels narrowly pulled out a one-stroke victory over First Choice Hair Putters with a two-week score of 68. In B Flight, Strokers won by three over Smokin’ Tees, and both teams will test their skills in A Flight over the next two weeks. The low score for the event was tuned in by C Flight winners Dependables with a fantastic 65! They’re moving up to B Flight along with Renfrew Metro. And in D Flight, somehow, the Golf Bags won the flight with the Rocketts second. Weekly winners were AJ White, Marion McDermid, Debbie Chalmer, and Evelyn Miller on July 26, and Esther O’Brien, Sheila Kemp, Julie Bonsor, and Kelly Coughlin on August 2. In Men’s Rec, we might have had some rain last Monday so a few teams did not come out, but we still played. The Executive Committee decided we would still give out prizes for all the flights, but we would not move any-

one up or down flights. Both Rowat Insurance and Schwartz Drywall tied with identical scores of 65 each week for a 130 total. B Flight was won by Deslaurier Cabinets with a great score of 131. In C Flight, Scott’s Shoes won with Publican House second, and in D Flight, Pontiac were the big winners with Bushwackers and Yolkowskie Hackers tied for second.Weekly winners were Wade Ellison, Brian Yolkowskie, Kevin Brown, and David Hall on July 24, and Mike Comeau, Kip Mulvihill, Jim Vandwouw and Ralph Banks on July 31.For our Aug. 1 Ladies Day, Mary Peer won A Flight with a score of 37 to beat Lisa Smith by 2.5 points, with Mary Ann Abrams third. B flight was a two-way tie between Kathy McAllister and Cheryl Campbell, with Barb Westgarth third, only a half-point behind. C Flight saw Bev Mau eke out a narrow halfpoint victory over Sheila Kemp. Lisa Smith won Longest Putt on #6 and Vi Rossy won the Hidden Hole and $37. In men’s Thursday play, Rob Warren is rounding into Club Championship form by easily winning the week with a score of 22, four points better than Kip Mulvihill. B Flight was won by Fergus Wrinn with 21.5 points, one better than Keith Brydges. Harry Luth had the week’s high score with a 24 and won C Flight by four over Brad Sammon and Paul Papousek. And in D Flight, Don Eady took home the honours, with Dave Cummings second and Brian Francis third.

Thrashing time was like a holiday for Mary Aunt Lizzie called it “threshing,” but everyone I knew called it “thrashing.” Father said his sister got high-minded when she moved to Regina and left the farm at Northcote behind, and sometimes he had no idea what she was talking about. Anyway, it was thrashing time and to me it was like a holiday ... just like the Saturday night card parties, only there was no music. Early in the morning, farm neighbours would start to arrive, and they would stand around the barnyard, smoking their pipes, waiting for Mr. Briscoe to bring the big thrashing machine, pulled down our long lane by his tractor. There was nothing to do until that boozer of a machine was situated, and the daylong work began. As many as 15 neighbours would be there, and that meant they would have to be fed their noon meal, as the thrashing could go on until late in the afternoon. Mother and my sister Audrey would be up before dawn, and the old Findlay Oval would be fair hopping by the time the first few neighbours had arrived. That year my best friend Velma came across the 20 acre field. With the wild rush to have dinner ready at

the stroke of 12, Mother and Audrey had no time to bother with the likes of me ... barely seven years old. And so Mother said I could have Velma over to play. We sat in the grape arbour in the two-seated swing, and could hear the kitchen sounds coming through the opened window. The clatter of dishes as the big table was being set, the bake table used, and another make shift table made of planks on two ‘sawhorses,’ covered with flour bag sheets, all needed to feed the neighbours who had come to help with the thrashing. Of course, Velma’s father, Uncle Alec was there too, as were a couple of her older brothers. The wonderful smell of roast pork and boiled turnips drifted through the open window, and Velma, far more adventurous that I was, said she couldn’t see any reason why

we couldn’t go in and get ourselves a plate full of dinner, and eat it in the grape arbour. I said it was probably better if we waited until the men were served, and then we could venture in. Velma was all for charging in right then, but I told her she could go if she wanted, but I was waiting until I knew the workers were digging into their pies. And so we sat it out until Velma took a peek in through the window and said the pie was on their plates. It didn’t take long for the men to clean their plates and head out the door to the job at hand. Velma and I went into the kitchen, where Mother and Audrey had collapsed onto two chairs with their plates in front of them at the old pine table. We grabbed two plates off the bake table, and loaded them with what was left of dinner, which wasn’t much. There wasn’t a scrap of pie. It looked like Mother and Audrey were all in. It didn’t take long for me to realize we had walked right into a pile of work. Mother said we could fill the dishpan with hot water from the reservoir, and start into

washing up, and Velma could grab a clean tea towel. Well, that certainly wasn’t what either of us had in mind! Mother made sure we had everything in order for the job at hand, and then she and Audrey took their loaded plates out into the grape arbour, and it wasn’t long before we could hear the sound of the swing seats gently going back and forth. Velma wanted to know how we got into cleaning up the dishes. I didn’t have an answer. I took a peek out the kitchen window. The swing had stopped moving. Audrey was asleep in one seat, and Mother in the other. My friend and I had no choice but to dig into cleaning up the dishes. Just when we thought we were finished, Mother said I was to get a pail of fresh water from the pump, and chip off shards of ice from the icebox, take a tin cup out of the cupboard, and take it out to the workers in the barnyard. There was no time left in the afternoon for Velma and me to play, and right then I decided when it came time for the thrashing machine to go to her farm, I would stay home. Spending a whole afternoon cleaning up the kitchen after more than a dozen farmers had eaten a full meal, was not my idea of a fun time. The last I saw of Velma that day, she was heading across the 20 acre field with her head down, and every step an effort. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Bridge club chalk talk dives into partner’s opening bids Aug. 2 must have been a good day to play cards, as 11 ½ tables of keen players turned out for the Wednesday afternoon session at the Renfrew Bridge Club. Wayne Daze started the day off with his Chalk Talk. He dis-

cussed different ideas and methods of replying to your partner’s opening bid. During the afternoon’s play, all the North — South pairs were wearing huge grins as there were several slams to be found in their direction.

Also, the results from some of the Boards demonstrated once more that “Fortune favours the brave”. For example, while Board 30 was Passed-out without play twice, 2 other enterprising North — South pairs fearlessly

bid and made 4H games. Also, while all the North — Souths who played Board 27 made 12 or 13 tricks; only 3 of them boldly bid and made the slam. It’s the wide variation in results that keeps dedicated bridge players

coming back week after week. Congratulations to the Aug 2 winners: North – South: 1: Ernie Berndt - Eric Brown, 2: Jeannie Yagminas Mona Brydges, 3: Anna McCallum Gwen Latendresse. East – West: 1: Rick Duncan - Leanne Cheliak, 2: Janet Osborne - Marilyn York, 3: Loretta Hennessy - Carolyn Milford.

Barclay Dick and Son gives back

On July 14, Barclay Dick and Son Farm Supply celebrated its 25th anniversary. As part of the celebrations several generous donations were made to community organizations. A beautiful bar crafted by Brady Dick was sold at auction to Duane McLaughlin of McLaughlin Transport of Haley Station. The proceeds of the by-donation bar and the sale of the bar were donated to the to the Renfrew 4-H Beef Calf Club $913 and $913 to Renfrew Agricultural Society who had provided helping hands throughout the occasion. Pictured are: Veronica Dick with a presentation to Emily Bromley (Leader of the Beef Calf Club) Colby Campbell, Beef Calf Club member thanking 4-H alumnus Duane McLaughlin and Krista Davidson for their support, and Judy Dobec, manager of the Renfrew Ag Society receiving a donation from Kevin Dick. Submitted

In this division headed by Barbara Jamieson and her committee of Jan Buelow, Diane Briscoe, Barb Cole, Signe Kubiseski, Shauna Lemenchick, Kim McDonald, Mary Richards and Denise Washington, the quilt section always attracts a lot of attention. As one enters the Exhibition Hall the talent displayed in this area receives lot of oohs and aahs. The first section is for articles which are hand quilted and are eligible for awards not only here at our local fair but also at the district level and perhaps even at the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies at Toronto. Whether you are interested in appliqué, piecing or a little of both you can easily be intrigued and amazed at the beautiful array of talent. There is a category to suit each one’s level of proficiency from beginner to experienced quilter. They now have a new section for those quilters who enjoy making quilt tops and wall hangings but have a professional long arm quilter do the actual machine quilting. This allows more quilters to participate in the fair. In home accents you can show your expertise in knitting, crocheting or home decorations. The sections include dishcloths, fridge magnets, card table covers and other creative items. For those who enjoy knitting you can show your talents by making socks, mitts, tuques, shawls, afghans and sweaters. The weaving class is popular and if you enjoy this craft be sure to enter any one of the sections i.e. rug, blanket, afghan or wall hanging. Nothing like having Christmas in September to show all the wonderful things people make for this season. Perhaps a Christmas stocking, a wall hanging, a Santa, a centrepiece, a table runner, ornaments or other numerous articles to choose from. Autumn festival — if this season is your favourite and you appreciate the vibrant colours of Thanksgiving and/ or Halloween you can find many items that will interest you. Whether it is a table runner, placemats, or a decoration you will again be able to show your creativity. The golden years — oh the joy of being over 60 years of age. You have a category just for you and lots of ideas to display your skill whether it be crocheting, embroidery, knitting or penmanship. We are sure there is something in this section for each one of you. If none of these sections appeal to you and your crafts, check out the section “your creative side”. We have tried to give a wide array of ideas so everyone will be able to find an item of interest that they can create.

sudoku

Bearsaeinrs

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
