OPG IS CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON THE OTTAWA RIVER TO PROTECT ONTARIO’S BIODIVERSITY. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is conducting research in the vicinity of its hydroelectric generating stations on the Ottawa River. This research, which is being carried out by Kleinschmidt Associates and Bowfin Environmental Consulting, is in support of OPG’s ongoing American eel and lake sturgeon mitigation studies for these species at risk.

Kleinschmidt and Bowfin boats may be in close proximity to the shoreline as they complete day- and nighttime fish abundance studies and shoreline inspections. This annual research is conducted under permits from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and in accordance with O. Reg. 242/08 (as amended by O. Reg. 176/13), under the Ontario Endangered Species Act. Work will continue until the end of September.

Renfrew long-term care workers want action for more hours of care TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

It’s time to care.

That was the message members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) delivered during a public information session on Aug. 8 in front of the Renfrew Public Library.

The small group wanted to share information on the Time to Care Act (Bill 33), which had its first reading in the legislature on Oct. 4, 2016.

“It’s to give people some facts and figures to inform them about what is going on in long-term care. It’s underfunded to the point that you can’t provide the care needs that are now increasing in long-term care,” said Collins Ferguson, a nurse at Renfrew Victoria Hospital. “The days of having a cup of tea and being pushed in front of a window to watch the traffic after your meals is long gone; people’s needs have changed considerable.”

Ferguson made it clear that this is not what he sees at the local hospital, but this is about facilities across Ontario.

Now, patients have more specific diet needs, physiotherapy, and more.

“We just don’t have the staff to perform those needs so that people can age with respect and dignity,” said Ferguson.

According to CUPE, the annual provincial funding per long-term care bed in Ontario is $43,970, compared to the figure of the rest of Canada (minus Ontario) of $52,185.

“Last year, we worked short nearly every day of the week in the summer. This year has not been as big of a concern because they hired a huge amount of students,” said Cathy St. Michael, food services worker at the Bonnechere Manor. “Our residents are not getting the care and respect they deserve, not through a lack of trying but through a lack of just not having enough minutes in the hour.”

Currently, there are 0.590 health care full-time staff per resident in Ontario; in the rest of Canada, that figure is up at 0.687.

Both St. Michael and Ferguson wanted the funding to be increased to the standard of the rest of Canada and for change in the hours.

“That’s what this bill is all about, Bill 33, it’s about having legislated four hours of minimum care per resident per day for personal care,” said St. Michael. “Now, it’s 3.15, but that’s not personal care, that’s all care — diet, laundry, etc.”

Currently, the rest of Canada stands at 3.67 hours per day.

“That’s not a nurse standing at the bedside. People think that it’s somebody standing at your bedside — that includes maintenance, laundry,” added Ferguson. “If you want to guarantee you’re not going to have your first bowel movement in [the] morning in your brief, you might want to get on board with this.”

They are both encouraging people to contact their local MPP to show support for Bill 33.

Province confirms design plans for Highway 17 expansion TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

It’s the news many in Renfrew County have been waiting for.

The next stage of the Highway 17 expansion is one step closer, as it is now at the design phase.

In a press release on Aug. 8, the County of Renfrew operations committee received a copy of a letter from the Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca that was sent to RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski.

The letter stated: “I am pleased to advise you that the ministry did secure approval to proceed with detail design for the next phase of expansion of Highway 17 from Scheel Drive to 3 km west of Bruce Street (Town of Renfrew).”

Yakabuski told Metroland Media he received a call from Del Deca last week and knew the letter was coming.

“It’s good news but not all the good news we’ve been waiting for,” said Yakabuski. “It’s good news from the point of view there is a clear commitment to move on to the next phase.”

Yakabuski has been working on this file for a number of years.

“This has been an ongoing top priority for myself, the county, and its wardens since I’ve been elected.

While there has been progress, we always need to press for more,” said Yakabuski.

“Hopefully, it will mean once this phase is complete we will move on to building highways.”

As to when there will be shovels in the ground, Yakabuski hopes it will be as soon as possible.

“I will be really happy when I hear the sound of bulldozers in the ground,” said Yakabuski. “That’s what we are really looking forward to.”

As to the cost of the design, Yakabuski was unable to confirm the details.

He also noted the minster has been very supportive of the project, and Yakabuski and Del Duca discuss it on a regular basis.

In the release, McNab/ Braeside mayor and county councillor Tom Peckett, also chair of the County of Renfrew operations committee, thanked the minister

for the excellent news and expressed his gratitude for all those involved in bringing attention to this vitally important issue for Renfrew County, including Yakabuski.

Peckett told Metroland Media this was wonderful news.

“It’s unprecedented; they have gone ahead and approved this study without the road being on the five-year plan,” said Peckett. “Nobody in Renfrew County has heard that being done. It indicates that it should be in the five-year plan soon.”

Peckett says it will have two major impacts on the area.

“It will be safer for everyone, especially in our township at the Calabogie Road intersection,” said Peckett.

“And, the economic value to our township and Renfrew County will be substantially increased.”

Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy was also pleased with the announcement.

“This announcement allows the ministry to move forward with all the steps that lead to getting the highway corridor ready for four-lane expansion to just past Renfrew,” said Murphy in the press release. “ I want to take a moment to specifically thank MPP John Yakabuski and councillor and former Warden Peter Emon. Their tireless efforts to keep bringing this issue to the forefront with the province and creating dialogue with stakeholders without a doubt has contributed greatly to the realization of today’s announcement.”

Renfrew Reeve and county councillor Peter Emon added this is an important piece of infrastructure.

“The County of Renfrew, John Yakabuski, and the community have worked hard to demonstrate the need for the development of this critical piece of provincial and community infrastructure,” said Emon in the release. “I believe our partnerships with and the support of North Eastern Ontario also demonstrated the importance of Highway 17 in serving Ontario and Canada.”

Emon told Metroland Media it was great news that the minster had recognized their ask.

Highway 417 now stretches up the Ottawa Valley to Scheel Drive. The next section has now gone to the design phase.

“He (Del Duca) has been fair and direct,” said Emon.

“We have had some sign posts we developed and one of them was to have the design done.

That’s the next milestone and he has moved that forward. The next step for us is when they finalize the

design, allocate the funding, after that issue the tender and start digging.

We are getting closer and it’s been a steady progress.”

Emon hopes it does not become a political issue in the near future.

“The important piece for us going forward is

to make sure this project does not become a political football in the next election,” said Emon.

“I would hope all three parties would commit to moving it forward and speeding it up.”

Yakabuski said this is something they agreed to work on together.

“This is a major priority,” said Yakabuski.

In the press release sent out by the county, it was noted that the letter outlined that the Ministry of Transportation will now be acquiring design consultants, and continuing with property acquisitions, utility relocations,

environmental approvals, and consultations with Indigenous communities, the public, and stakeholders.

Once construction funding is confirmed, the ministry will identify the project in their five-year plan portion of the Southern Highways Program.

Congratulations are pouring in for the Helping Hands Thrift Store located at 290 Veterans Way as they celebrate their 15th anniversary.

The for-profit thrift store, which donates to a number of local charities, started out to support the Renfrew Christian School 15 years ago and has carried on after the school closed in 2013.

Every month, the store donates to the Renfrew and Area Food Bank, Renfrew and Area Seniors’ Home Support, and Valley Animal Rescue.

They also donate to a number of other charities, including Hospice Renfrew and Valley Heritage Radio during their annual fundraising campaigns.

They are marking the “crystal” milestone on Aug. 18 and 19.

On Friday, there will be treats and lemonade, and on Saturday, Valley Animal Rescue will be running a barbecue. There is also a silent auction that will go toward a local charity.

Highway expansion nears?

Yes, residents in Arnprior and Renfrew and all points in between should take a moment to enjoy the latest development in the Highway 17 expansion saga.

It has been years in the making; virtually every top community leader along the route has lobbied Queen’s Park for it.

And now the provincial Liberals have issued a letter saying the government is at the design stage.

But don’t grow too complacent, not, at least, until shovels are in the ground.

Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca sent the Aug. 8 letter to Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MPP John Yakabuski, who passed it along to the County of Renfrew operations committee. The letter states: “I am pleased to advise you that the ministry did secure approval to proceed with detail design for the next phase of expansion of Highway 17 from Scheel Drive to three kilometres west of Bruce Street (Town of Renfrew).”

Designs are good. Designs are expensive.

Designs usually mean a builder is serious about proceeding. The obvious question is when, and we have no obvious answer to that question.

It isn’t officially in the government’s five-year plan.

That fact has allowed doubt to seep in.

Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon already hinted as much.

He hopes it will not become a “political football” in the next election.

Are the Liberals using the plan as bait for

votes? Would the PCs suspend and review all infrastructure plans if elected? How would the NDP move forward?

Emon, former county warden who took the lead on this file for many years, didn’t make any guesses.

He simply stated a hope the expansion will go forward, and that Del Duca has been “fair and direct” in their exchanges.

There is no question that the sooner this road turns into four lanes, from Scheel Road to three kilometres past Renfrew’s Bruce Street, the more lives will be saved.

Especially at the Calabogie Road intersection, which will become a cloverleaf.

Human error will be greatly reduced even as traffic moves more quickly.

This is true regardless of assertions some have made in social media: namely, blame bad drivers not the road.

The almost bumper-to-bumper traffic on the narrow Highway 17 is less forgiving of careless drivers.

That is why the government is indicating it will spend millions of dollars to widen it.

However, there is much to be done before travellers get to that point.

Design consultants must be hired, property acquisitions made, utility relocations, environmental approvals, consultations with Indigenous communities, the public, and stakeholders. There is plenty of talking still to do, unfortunately.

But, yes, we should enjoy this next step.

Pedestrians are to fully cross the road before drivers can proceed To the editor: I am writing this letter to share with others both drivers and pedestrians of my experience on Aug. 3 after the 10 a.m. hour at the downtown Renfrew main intersection of Raglan Street and Renfrew Avenue West.

I was on the walk signal which had just appeared and I was crossing as a pedestrian when a woman driver in a red SUV turned left from Renfrew Avenue to go north on Raglan.

I was in her lane and was exiting it near the yellow line when I had to jump ahead to narrowly miss being hit by her.

I do hope that the driver will read this letter and realize her error for future pedestrians she encounters while driving and especially while turning left.

I wish I would have gotten her license plate as I would have reported her, but I was too shaken to think of it and my only concern was to get out of her way before I was hit.

Since I am a solution focussed thinker I urge the town to place better signage and an audible signal as well as the walk sign to alert drivers that this intersection has a pedestrian

When she finally noticed my actions she stopped and did not give any gesture of ‘oops sorry’ or that she was even in the wrong. She frowned at me and pointed to the red hand signal that had just popped up.

I was shaken by the event, but glad I was quick and agile enough to escape the near collision.

She was not texting and was just driving blindly ahead on her green light without any regard for what might be in her way.

As I was doing business in Omega Jewellers I shared my story with the owners.

They told me that this happens often and that they know six people who were hit there this summer.

Drivers holding a valid driver’s license should know the rules of the road and that pedestrians have the right of way especially in a marked and light signaled cross walk. This means that drivers need to stop and wait for pedestrians to be fully across both lanes of the road before they proceed.

The pedestrian being fully across before the driver proceeds is in fact is a new law as of January 2017.

An unexpected encounter in Algonquin MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

One thing I enjoy about nature is that in the wilds, there are always unanticipated encounters. It might be a spectacular wildflower or unusual insect whose identity remains unsolved until you return home and search the books. Or it might be an encounter with a larger animal, even one with which you are quite familiar.

Recently, I experienced the latter. I was in Algonquin

Park looking for Common Branded Skippers, tiny northern butterflies that fly in August. For two hours I searched for them in a small meadow near West Smith Lake. This year, apart from Monarchs, most butterflies are scarce; the incessant rain has likely had a negative effect on caterpillars and pupae.

The Joe Pye Weed and other meadow wildflowers were alive with bees and flies, but butterflies were near absent; I encountered only three Least Skippers, one Painted Lady and one Aphrodite Fritillary.

I was on my knees taking photos of Bumble Bees when I glanced toward the narrow canal that ran along the meadow’s edge to a pond farther out. To my surprise I was looking into the eyes of a beaver.

As I slowly moved to change my camera lens, the beaver, which had been floating silently, responded with an explosion of water. Waves soon rippled down the canal toward the pond. Eventually the animal’s head emerged far away and soon was out of sight. I waited quietly and after about 15 minutes the beaver returned. It swam up the

canal, one that had been dug years ago by its ancestors, stopping mere metres from me. For several minutes it silently floated, its nostrils flaring as it smelled the air. When a breeze blew my scent to it, the beaver dove and again vanished.

Over the next hour this scenario was repeated several times until the beaver decided I posed no threat.

Once satisfied I was harmless, it swam past me and climbed out of the water onto a trail leading to the meadow. It vanished into the dense cloak of Virgin’s Bower that smothered the Bracken Fern and grasses. I could always tell where the beaver was by the violent shaking of the plants, a scene reminiscent of one in Jurassic Park.

Eventually the beaver emerged, a long bouquet of plants clenched in its teeth and trailing behind it. It entered the canal and towed its cargo to a widening where it stopped and began noisily devouring its bounty.

A smaller beaver, likely last year’s young, arrived a short time later. When it tried to steal part of the larger beaver’s meal it was met with an angry response, so it settled for nibbling on chunks of Water-lily floating on the water’s surface.

Both beavers regularly swam past me to harvest more plants. One time the larger beaver returned with an impressive White Birch in tow. The physical effort it expended in dragging the tree along the canal and across the pond was admirable.

As I have experienced in the past, once Beavers learn your scent they will tolerate your presence. It just requires a lot of patience. And not showering or changing clothes for a week also helps!

Let’s get the facts straight on global warming

To the editor: In inspiration from MP Cheryl Gallant’s unfortunate House of Commons vote to repudiate the Paris Climate Accord, pseudoscience has been filling these pages in recent weeks. In a July 5 letter, A.M. Azulay argued, “The truth is that climate change is a political tool.” July 19,, Bob Boyer argued, “Twenty plus years ago a career politician (not a scientist) by the name of Al Gore shocked the world into believing in global warming.” July 13, Brian Tourangeau wrote, “scientists and Al Gore were caught red-handed falsifying documents in order to provide the data results they wanted.”

Let us review the real facts: The science linking global temperatures to atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels was first developed in the late 19th century by the Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius.

CO2 has been confirmed within laboratory settings to trap heat by trapping sun radiation.

At the start of the Industrial Revolution, atmospheric CO2 levels were around 280 parts-per-million (ppm). Today atmospheric CO2 levels are above 400ppm, higher than they have been in millions of years. Humans are emitting hundreds of billions of tonnes of CO2.The earth’s natural climate changes have usually correlated with changes in atmospheric CO2 levels. That humans cause global warming through greenhouse gas and CO2 emissions is the conclusion of thousands of peer-reviewed scientific journals. Unfortunately, sharing more of these scientific facts is not likely to change the minds of those who fervently dispute the human causality in global warming. The

problem is not that they lack information, but rather that they are falsely educated with misinformation. They also fear to accept the science. Boyer wrote, “climate change is possibly a hoax in order to redistribute wealth around the world.” A.M. Azulay wrote, “half-baked science and popularized political bandwagons and corporate selfishness have caused problems but not solved them.”

Easing the deniers’ fears requires arguing that controlling CO2 emissions does not require either big government or small government, nor more powerful nor less powerful corporations, but rather only smart government.

Generally, there are four methods that governments may choose to reduce greenhouse gases: picking and choosing “green” businesses to subsidize, sector-by-sector regulations, carbon cap-and-trade, and direct carbon taxation.

Economists generally endorse revenue-neutral carbon taxation to reduce emissions, with the revenue of the tax kept out of the public purse and redistributed back to the citizenry. Preston Manning, one of the patriarchs of Canada’s modern conservative movement, endorses this form of carbon pricing.

Conspiracy theories are not always wrong, since humans do at times cynically manipulate each other. But the real conspiracy is in the millions of dollars that oil companies invest in climate denial propaganda, despite their own CEOs acknowledging human-caused global warming. The conspiracy is not in the science that is older than the lifetime of any person on earth.

Renfrew Fair: roots, fruits and vegetable department BILL GAGAN Renfrew Agricultural Society

Renfrew Fair has been an agricultural fair for the past 163 years and while most agricultural fairs are slowly turning into carnivals, the Renfrew Fair continues the tradition.

Gardening was a necessity in our early rural life that turned into a tradition for those who recognized the superior flavour of homegrown products and appreciated the sense of accomplishment in producing their own

food.

There is a certain joy in seeing seeds sprout and plants grow that non-gardeners may find hard to fully understand.

And there are those who actually enjoy getting down on their knees, pawing in the soil (not dirt) and pulling weeds.

The “roots, fruits and vegetable” department certainly welcomes gardeners of all stripes.

In the coming fair of 2017, a new category for first-time exhibitors has

been created.

We hope that this will encourage people to enter and not fear that they would have no chance against experienced gardeners.

It should be noted that the size of your garden is of no importance.

It has been shown many times that prizewinning entries can be grown in a pot on the deck.

There are approximately 60 categories in the roots, fruits and vegetable department.

An Exhibit Hall booklet can be obtained by contacting the fair office at 613-432-5331 or on the website at www. renfrewfair.com.

For those 18 years of age and under, there is the Junior Fair which has gardening categories also.

Another great year for Camp Glissando CAMP GLISSANDO

A music camp like no other, Camp Glissando held two showcase concerts for family and friends at Trinity St. Andrew’s Church as the culmination of each week’s music making. Campers performed vocal solos and choral singing, as well as displayed their talents on percussion, woodwind, brass and string instruments.

Week one (ages six to nine) was

amazing with crafts and musical games focusing on pirates and detectives.

Campers in week two (ages 10 to 13) created wind chimes and honed their composing skills to create their own compositions that they also performed at the concert.

All the campers had so much fun that they are already looking forward to next year’s camp.

Johnson family to mark 169th anniversary of arrival to Canada This summer will mark the first time in a few decades since the Johnson clan have had a reunion.

The descendants of John and Janet Johnson who arrived in Canada from

Scotland in 1848 will celebrate the 169th anniversary of their arrival this summer!!

John and Janet’s first-born son Alexander married Elizabeth Brown

in 1876. Their offspring were John B (Susan Brown), Janet (Robert Thomas Brown), Samuel (Mary Brown), Dan (Martha Sutherland), Margaret (Howard Jackson), Elizabeth (Silas

Thibeau).

These siblings all settled in Westmeath Township except for Janet and Robert Thomas Brown who settled in Campbell’s Bay, Que. Subsequent gen-

erations have travelled far and abroad.

Lola (Edsel) Johnson started a family tree book that included all the history of Alexander and Elizabeth Brown’s family that she kept current to the mid 1980s.

It includes milestones such as weddings, births and deaths of the growing families.

It is the hope of the committee that this history can be brought up-todate, through the contacts made for the reunion.

Last year a couple of the cousins made the decision to pursue the idea of the reunion and see if there would be interest. With a few more of the clan, a committee formed to start the process.

It has been an interesting process to track down all the descendants of the six siblings, and it is the sincere hope of the committee that no one has been missed. The event will take place on August 19, 2017 at the Shady Nook Recreation Centre. Festivities will commence at 12:30 p.m. with registration and an afternoon of visiting, children’s activities and entertainment. A catered dinner will follow at 5 p.m.

Local openers confirmed for Festival of Small Halls Familiar faces will join up-and-comers opening for big name musicians on rural stages during the Ontario Festival of Small Halls this fall.

After announcing the 2017 fall headliners earlier this summer, the community opening acts are now finalized for almost all the shows, happening Sept. 14 to Oct. 1 in more than 30 cherished small halls across Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa Valley.

From a father-daughter duo, to a singer-songwriter who has charted in the United States, this year’s opening acts are set to bring home the community vibe at the festival performances.

Festival general manager, Kelly Symes, said many of the small town venues on the schedule have played a role in launching local musicians over the years, giving them a chance to be heard while playing for community events at suppers, dances and celebrations.

“So much wonderful talent can be found locally, in the towns and rural areas the festival is in this year,” Symes said. “The local music scene is usually kick-started at community halls themselves; we’re thrilled to showcase that authenticity during the festival.”

To give an idea of the calibre of some of the openers, Sacha, who will be performing with The Abrams at Stonefields in Beckwith on Sept. 14 is already earning accolades in the country music industry. She kicked off the new year as an opener for Brett Kissel’s Ice Snow 30 Below Tour and was named 2016’s Next Country Music Star while being invited to play the Havelock Jamboree. Sacha was also chosen by the Country Music Association of Ontario to perform on the Artist Spotlight stage during the Lucknow Music in the Fields festival.

Bishop places 5th Eganville’s Melissa Bishop fell short of her goal for a medal at the International Amateur Athletic Federation track and field world championships in London, England last weekend.

The 29-year-old ran 1:57.68, enough for fifth place.

She later tweeted, “Something new is gained through every experience.

It had to be a disappointment. At the 2015 world championship she finished the 800 metres with a silver medal.

It was a tough season for junior hockey in Renfrew last year, but that’s going to change with the 2017-18 season.

The Renfrew Timberwolves of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League finished in last place of the Richardson Division with only eight wins, 36 losses, and four ties, for just 20 points.

Kevin Gould, general manager with the Timberwolves, admits it was a rough year.

“We are very excited to get things going this year; last year was a very tough year for the players and the fans, and we are looking forward to putting that in the past,” said Gould in an email.

Training camp is set for Aug. 23, 24, and 30 at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre (MAC) from 8 to 10 p.m., and Gould is hopeful for the new season.

“We have a lot of returning players coming

back from last year but we also encourage anyone who has a goal of playing junior B hockey to sign up for our open tryouts. We plan to make some changes this year and there is always an opportunity for new players to make the roster,” said Gould.

He is focused on one main goal for the new season.

“Seeing how we missed the playoffs last year, our goal for this year will be to make the playoffs and we strongly believe that will happen,”

said Gould.

The Timberwolves are scheduled to play four exhibition games: Aug. 26 at MAC versus Richmond at 7:30 p.m.; Aug. 27 in Beckwith against Richmond; Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. against the newlyformed Whitewater Kings at MAC; and on Sept 3. in Pembroke, they will play the Kings again at 7 p.m.

The Upper Ottawa Valley’s only dirt bike track is motoring past its third year in operation.

Dubbed “Ontario’s naturally elevated track” the Kennelly Mountain Motocross (KMMX) race series this year was on two weekends, one in June and one in July.

That’s when dirt bike racers from across the region bring their campers and equipment and machines up Ontario’s highest mountain ridge near Calabogie and Mount St. Patrick to a unique destination.

The sandy loam soil track winds along the mountain’s ridge offering two-minute lap times of continuous elevation change.

Owners Sheri and Chris Kopetoske opened the second track in Eastern Ontario (the only other is south of Ottawa,

in Richmond).

After years of driving their son to tracks in Toronto, Montreal and beyond, they were sure a spot in the valley would work. And it has. More than 200 participated in the July 1516 series, up significantly from the previous year. Hundreds of kids – both boys and girls from towns like Arnprior and Renfrew have joined KMMX. Riders up to the age of 65 participate.

“We’re having a terrific weekend,” a busy Sheri said on July 16. “The kids are having a great time. Motocross is a really great family sport. You are with your kids on the weekend, and many of the families get to know each other.”

Riders take the tournaments quite seriously, she added. It’s usually lights out (or at least generators off) at 11 p.m. and helmets on at 6 a.m.

The competition is real, and the stakes are high for those looking to turn professional in Canada or the U.S. Sheri said about five riders from the Ottawa area are making a living off the sport.

It’s also a good cardio workout, surprisingly. A motorized bike does require daft handling and peak awareness.

When the helmet comes off the driver is usually exhausted and sweating.

The couple hasn’t regretted taking the plunge and opening a motocross business.

The entire family and some friends are involved. Son Collin, now 19, has a major role to play.

“The sport has been good to our family,” Sheri said. “It’s a huge community of friends, too.”

We have had our fair share of electrical storms this year, and team VAC (Valley Automation & Controls) zapped the competition on Tuesday night to take A flight. Legere Industrial Supplies had such a good game winning B flight that they will be competing in A flight next week. Rob Kimberly was closest to the pin on #5, and Matt Snyder was closest on #7.

birdies on Wednesday Night to win A flight, and the Skunk Alley Boyz had a pot pourri of great shots of their own to take B flight. Rick Quade was closest to the pin on #5, and Craig Briscoe was closest on #7.

Thursday was shaping up to be a hot and steamy night for our Ladies League when a wicked afternoon thunderstorm flushed all the humidity away. Grip it and Sip it took home first place in A flight, Partee of Fore won B flight, and the Driving Fours claimed victory in C flight. Closest to the Pin winners were April Scheuneman on #7, and Jen Kunopaskie on #13.

Laurel Rafuse golf tournament Sept. 17 at Renfrew Golf Club Laurel Rafuse had a passion for working with children and youth with disabilities.

Laurel was devoted to organizations such as the Children’s Outreach Summer School and Camp, where she worked with children, and to Community Living Renfrew County South, which supports camp programs for children and youth.

She had great empathy with the individuals who received support and she volunteered a great deal of her time working with them.

Laurel often brought individuals to her home and family cottage for delicious meals prepared by her mom, Marilyn Rafuse. Laurel hoped that

after college she would work at Community Living in some capacity. Unfortunately, Laurel was unable to finish college; she was taken away from us too soon, but her memory is alive in the joy given to the individuals and families through the summer camp generously funded by the proceeds from her memorial golf tournament.

Marilyn and Ned Rafuse established the Laurel Rafuse Memorial Golf Tournament so that the summer camp program for children and youth with disabilities could flourish in her honour.

This is the 24th year of that legacy, and the golf tournament continues to provide much

needed respite for families and so much fun for the children and youth who participate. They have the opportunity to experience activities like fishing, swimming, rafting, museum tours, visits to the zoo, and afternoons at the park and water park. They get to do this with proper support and staffing to make it a fun, safe and successful summer camp experience. These programs would not exist for these children and their families without the generous support of everyone associated with this special tournament.

Over the last 23 years, the Laurel Rafuse Memorial Golf Tournament has raised over $200,000 and has been able to expand from sum-

mer camp to also include a March Break camp.

Laurel’s memory has surely been honoured, and she would be proud that something so important to her is continuing to benefit those she cared about.

This year the tournament is on Sunday, Sept.

17, at the Renfrew Golf Club. Organizers are holding the tournament on a Sunday this year in the hope that even more teams can participate. • Take a step back.

Never throw water on a grease fire – this will only spread the flame.

• Push the igniter button. • If there is no igniter button, insert a long match or BBQ lighter through the side burner hole first, then turn on the heat control knob. • If the burner does not ignite right away, turn the gas off and wait five minutes, keeping the hood open, before repeating the procedure.

At the start of the BBQ season, do this THREE-STEP SAFETY CHECK of your BBQ: 1 CLEAN Use a pipe cleaner or wire to ensure

burner ports are free of rust, dirt, spider webs or other debris.

2 CHECK Examine the hose leading from the tank to the burners. Replace it if cracked or damaged.

3 TEST Find leaks by applying a 50/50 solution of water and dish soap to propane cylinder connections and hoses. If bubbles appear, tighten the connection and/or replace the damaged parts and retest.

DO NOT place the BBQ close to wooden fences or walls, vinyl siding, or anything that can burn. The area behind your BBQ must be free of anything that can ignite – this is where hot gases escape.

Keep loose clothing away from a hot BBQ. Keep children and pets at least one metre (three feet) away from a hot BBQ. When finished barbecuing, turn the gas valve off first, then turn off the burner controls so no gas is left in the connecting hose.

Allow the BBQ to cool completely before closing the cover.

GRAND ROUNDS Bringing out the creative side of dialysis patients A unique new project underway in the nephrology unit is turning many patients into budding artists.

Using tiny pieces of wood no larger than a toonie and paint, Ottawa University student Valiyah Khurshid is bringing Arts in Dialysis to RVH and to the satellite units in Pembroke and Barry’s Bay. “Patients and staff are painting small, personalized pieces of a mural which will be put together to form a larger piece of artwork,” explains Khurshid, a Health Sciences and Visual Arts student. “This artwork will be put up in the waiting room for patients, family and staff members to enjoy and be reminded of the presence and interconnectedness of one another.”

As the daughter of RVH Nephrologist, Dr. Amtul Musawir, she wanted to volunteer over the summer months in the unit, and has a passion for the arts.

After discussing the volunteering options with her mom, they figured this was the perfect way to blend Khurshid’s expertise and interact with the patients during treatments.

Krista Helferty, RVH social worker in the unit, is overseeing the project and says that this is a fresh idea to RVH, but it is very popular in the U.K. in various forms (creative writing, poetry, painting, drawing, etc.). “There is an active program in Saskatoon—which first piqued my interest— as well as one in Vancouver.”

RGC hosts 88th club championship KEVIN SEBULSKI

What a fantastic three days we had for our 88th Renfrew Golf Club (RGC) championship, presented by our friends at Ottawa Valley Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine.

On Friday night we started off the weekend with our very own RGC Par-3 contest.

On Saturday after the first round of play we had surprise leaders in almost every flight and on Sunday we had a new course record set on the ladies side.

We now have someone who has won our men’s club championship in a record five decades and neither of these people shot the low round of the day!

Congratulations to Rob Warren, our 2017 men’s club champion. Rob not only won his 11th men’s club championship on Sunday, but he becomes the only person in RGC history to win a club championship title in five different decades. Rob previously held this distinction with his mother Doreen (Warren) Latraverse.

Rob fired rounds of 75-73 overtake Saturday leader Paul Simard. Paul finished sec-

ond while 2017 Junior Club Champion Ryan Boudreau finished third and took home Low Net honours in Championship Flight as well.

Congratulations to Mary Jo Wertwyn who not only captured her third consecutive ladies club championship (and fourth overall) but set a new ladies course record while doing it with a fantastic 74! Mary Jo’s twoday total was 162.

Finishing second, and 2017 Senior Ladies Champion, is Mary Ann Abrams with 175.

Kim McDonald is our Championship Low Net winner with a 145.

The low round of the day was fired by Dave Hall, who shot a fantastic 71 to come from behind in B Flight, taking the title by one over both 2017 senior mens champion Rick Desilets and first round co-leader Dave Gallagher, who won Low Net in B Flight.

Anne Windle won Ladies B Flight in a one-hole playoff over Kim Vandewouw.

Both ladies had identical 190 scores and Anne won the playoff with a birdie on #10.

Kim was the overall low net ladies winner with a score of 140. Cathy McNally placed third, missing the playoff by a single stroke.

Clem Simard held onto his overnight lead

and successfully defended his C Flight title by two strokes over mens club captain Lawrence Gallagher (who took home low net honours), with Rob Carroll only one stroke behind Lawrence.

Barb Westgarth also held onto her overnight lead and distanced herself from the field with a great 101 to win Ladies C Flight.

Faith Mau, in her first ever Club Championship not only finished second, but she also took home the Low Net prize.

And Bill Butson also defended his super senior title, this year in a playoff over Don Eady. Bill and Don needed one extra hole after both shooting matching 170’s. Bill closed the door on Don by chipping in on hole 10.

Friday’s Par 3 contest was won by Mary Ann Abrams on the ladies side and Rob Warren on the men’s side, shooting 55 and 54 respectively.

Finally, thank you also to R&D Insurance for sponsoring Saturday’s Hole-In-One on Hole 14. Unfortunately, no-one is $10,000 richer.

College/University students living away from home should take a few minutes to make sure they are living in a fire-safe environment.

Educating students on what they can do to stay safe during the school year is important and often overlooked. Nearly 85 per cent of dorm fires were started by cooking “The Renfrew Fire Department wishes all students the best of luck in the upcoming school year,” said Mike Guest, fire prevention officer.

Guest offers the following safety tips for students: Look for fully sprinklered housing when choosing a dorm or off-campus housing.

Make sure your dormitory or apartment has smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside every sleeping area and on each level. For the best protection, all smoke alarms should be interconnected so that when one sounds they all sound.

Test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms at least monthly.

Never remove batteries or disable the alarm.

Learn your building’s evacuation plan and practice all drills as if they were the real thing.

If you live off campus, have a fire escape plan with two ways out of every room.

When the smoke alarm or fire alarm sounds, get out of the building quickly and stay out.

During a power outage, use a flashlight.

Cook only where it is permitted.

Stay in the kitchen when cooking.

Cook only when you are alert, not sleepy or drowsy from medicine or alcohol.

Check with your local fire department for any restrictions before using a barbeque grill, fire pit, or chimenea.

Check your school’s rules before using electrical appliances in your room.

Use a surge protector for your computer and plug the protector directly into an outlet.

Ensure doors and windows open easily to provide two ways out of every room.

children grow up in poverty, they are at high risk of dropping out of school and/or not transitioning to post-secondary education. This then puts them at risk of being “unemployable” as adults, and if they then have children, these children are more likely to live in poverty, continuing the cycle of poverty. CPAN’s Tools for School program was created to allow all children to reach their full potential in life and enjoy a bright future.

When CPAN was formed in 2000, our goal was to take action and help children living in poverty. Back then, we stuffed one backpack at a time and gave them out to children on a case-by-case basis. Tools for School has grown substantially since then and now helps between 1,000 and 1,500 local children/youth in need annually by providing a backpack, school supplies and shoes. We cannot do this alone, and need your help.

Back to school has never been so delicious or natural.

The students at St. Michael’s Catholic School in Douglas are in for a special treat when they return, as their garden, for which they handselected the seeds, is flourishing.

The natural outdoor play area has been truly a community effort to build from various fundraisers to more than 60 volunteers helping to construct it.

Funds were raised through a spring dance and paint night.

The area was constructed on the May long weekend and cost approximately $2,500.

However, that was not the total cost of the project. The cost was covered by many generous community members giving of their time, materials, labour and more.

In fact, all summer there has been a watering schedule to help ensure the garden keeps on growing.

“All the time was donated, it was very cool,” said Rebecca Holly a kindergarten teacher who was out watering the garden on Aug. 9.

“The volunteer support was overwhelming.

We guessed the project was ‘worth’ much, much, more and could not of been possible without all the help.”

Her teaching partner Tiffany McGrath and Erin Watson from the parent council were also driving forces behind the project.

McGrath’s husband even constructed a small wooden playhouse for the project; it’s often a lemonade stand, explained Holly.

However, the fall will be the first real chance for the students to experience the garden.

They all picked out different seeds to plant in the raised beds, including wildflowers and lavender to attract butterflies, ever berries, carrots, beans, tomatoes, lettuce and Swiss chard.

“We hope the kids will be able to make a soup or salad when they get back,” said Holly.

Each area of natural play has been meticulously thought out.

The rock garden was created by the students and was placed in the shape of a rosary. An old well has even been covered in wood with plans to add a ramp for the students to climb on.

The students are encouraged to climb the wooden lodges and experience nature.

Holly says the area has been well used in the summer from children playing on it during volleyball or baseball nights.

January 18, 1956-August 7, 2017 Former Town of Arnprior By-Law Enforcement Officer & Animal Control Officer It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our “rock”, our mom and devoted wife and best friend of our dad Bill MacMeechan of Arnprior.

Mom, Mary Barbara ‘Barb’ MacMeechan, passed away unexpectedly in the comfort and peace of her Arnprior family homestead on Monday, August 7, 2017. Mom was only 61 but filled a lifetime for us with lasting memories. We will always remember those years filled with so much love surrounded by family, friends and love of community. She was born January 18, 1956 the daughter of the late Clifford and Delima (Kilbride) Lebrun and sister to five brothers and three sisters. Mom and Dad started dating at a young age and soon knew they were soul mates.

They were married December 15, 1973. Later came their children, Meagan MacMeechan (Ottawa) and Mandy Stinson of Arnprior. Mom was so dedicated and loyal to her family, a strong lady who was there for all of us. She would later share that special love and dedication by showering her grandsons Deven and Liam Stinson. Together Mom and Dad shared their love of music as members of the Spirit of 69 (drum core marching band) for 10 plus years. They spent many nights at the ball diamonds in Arnprior; Bill coached and Barb as score keeper or running after her daughters. She had a strong respect for animals and her community serving both in her career as the former Town of Arnprior By-Law Enforcement Officer and Animal Control Officer.

Barb is also survived by siblings Marian Miller of Galetta, Anne Shirley Lebrun of Arnprior, Maureen Larkin (Danny) and James Lebrun, all of Galetta, brother-in-law Dwight Miller, two nephews, two nieces, many cousins and her special and true friend, Linda Roy of Ottawa. Everyone was “Kiddo” to mom but to us she will always be our mother, wife and grandma. Arrangements by the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street N., Arnprior. It wasn’t a secret for long ... even if it was meant to be. But no one got a brand-new car without the news spreading pretty fast.

Being next farm to Uncle Alec’s though, meant that we got a look at the new Plymouth before anyone else at Northcote.

And what a beauty it was. Certainly many steps up from the old Model T with the hole in the back floor, and the two front fenders different colours, which we got in a trade.

I was just as excited as was my little friend Velma when the new car came into her family.

My sister Audrey wondered where the money came from.

Did Uncle Alec sell off his herd of cattle, or his workhorses?

No, he didn’t. The cows and the horses were right there in the barnyard.

Uncle Alec, the good neighbour that he was, was more than generous letting us all have a ride in the new Plymouth, taking Mother to Briscoe’s General Store, and our family taking turns, and once driving Velma and me all the way to Douglas. He was pretty fussy about his new car too.

None of his sons were allowed behind the steering wheel, even though they were old enough to drive.

Even when they were courting, they had to take the horse and buggy, just like every other young fella in Northcote, who wasn’t lucky enough to have a new Plymouth sitting in his yard.

My friend Velma said her father could often be seen wiping the shiny fenders with his handkerchief, and when it rained, he covered it with a canvas to keep it dry. Yes, he was pretty fussy ... at least at the start of ownership. But like all things bought for use on the farm back then, the time would come when it would have to be put into other service.

It wasn’t that the thrill of a new car had worn off. Certainly not!

It was still the nicest car to be parked at the Lutheran Church on Sundays. Ralph, one of the older boys, was eventually allowed to get behind the wheel, but only after Uncle Alec let him run it around the 20-acre field a good many times.

I was always amazed that Aunt Bertha never learned to drive the new car. Certainly, we didn’t have the old Model T more than a day or so, before Mother got behind the wheel, drove out the long lane, and headed all the way into Renfrew. But not Aunt Bertha. She left the driving to Uncle Alec.

Well, as the novelty of the new car wore off, and it was commonplace to see it parked in the rain, and the Thom boys, one by one, were allowed to get behind the wheel, you could see that Uncle Alec would be putting the Plymouth to other uses, to get the full value out of the dollars he spent on it.

No longer did we have to take our shoes off when we got in the Plymouth, and it wasn’t unusual to see Uncle Alec unload a few bags of wheat from the grist mill.

But I knew the new car had lost its glory when I was over playing with Velma one Saturday, and Uncle Alec had parked the car close to the barn.

When he wheeled the car over to the house to tell Aunt Bertha he’d be back in time for supper, a Holstein calf had its head out one back window, and a sheep out the other. Uncle Alec headed into Renfrew to market the two, and the fastest way to get there was in the Plymouth that only a scant few months before was treated like a member of the family.

Full house stays at bridge club Mike Nagrodski Aug. 9 saw 12 full tables of enthusiastic Renfrew Bridge Club players turn out for the afternoon session.

Wayne Daze started the day off with his always informative Chalk Talk. He stressed how important the defender’s first lead would be and talked about the different considerations one should have when playing against a suit or a No Trump contract.

Regular play commenced and all went well, until the fourth round, when Arthur Ham was surprised to discover he held 15 cards rather than the usual 13. Not surprisingly, it took the director some time to sort out, who should hold what. (Arthur seemed to recover quickly, as he promptly made 12 tricks on a 3 NT contract).

The cards were very evenly distributed and only three slam attempts were successful. Board 13 saw several North-South pairs make 12 tricks; but only Jeannie Yagminas and Mona Brydges were daring enough to bid and make the slam. Well judged, ladies!
