News - Renfrew may have its very own swimming pool, after all, just not an indoor one. Renfrew council has voted 5-1 in favour of seeking requests for proposal (RFP) to build an outdoor pool for not more than $1.5 million. Last year, council decided not to pursue building a facility that would house a second ice pad and an indoor pool. The decision was made after council members saw that the anticipated annual operating costs were prohibitive and that partial government funding for the project was unlikely in the next few years. Now, council is looking to receive RFPs from a few companies, by September, so construction can start this fall and conclude next spring on an outdoor pool that would be open 10 weeks the first year and about 15 weeks in year two. The 10 weeks would include a week of training for on-site staff. The only council member who opposed the move was Jim Miller, while Reeve Au-
drey Green was out of town and unavailable to vote. “I’m not being critical of the pool,â€? stressed Miller. He went on to say that he’s mostly concerned because the town already owes $13 million and has other current or potential financial challenges, including a 14 per cent increase in police budgeting as of 2014 and a loan guarantee for Renfrew Power Generation’s $20 million for the new generating station project. “All I’m saying is it’s not a great time to keep on borrowing money,â€? said Miller. “I leave you to have your opinion,â€? responded Mayor Bill Ringrose. “This council can’t hamstring itself with what-ifs, what-ifs,â€? said Coun. Clint McWhirter. “We have a job to do and we have to move forward on projects. To sit on our hands for this project to finish or that project to finish, you’re not moving ahead ‌ I see this as an opportunity to do something. People in this town have been talking about pools for over 20 years. Finally, somebody is going to address it.â€? See POOL, page 2
