Peaks festival a rib-roaring success SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

By all accounts, it was a finger licking good time. Aug. 18-20, Calabogie Peaks hosted Calabogie Blues and Ribfest, drawing thousands, campers and day visitors alike, to the venue. “This year was a good bounce back year for the festival after two years of terrible weather that included a monsoon event last year,” said Ed Torres, president of Torres Media. “The crowds came early on Friday and the campgrounds were quite busy by the time the festival gates opened.” Along with a number of rib booths from across North America, the event featured a musical lineup that pleased the considerable crowds. “Victor Wainwright wowed the crowds on Friday night and had everyone dancing,” said Torres. “Saturday we feel was our most solid single day line-up in the seven-year history of the festival, capped off with Big Sugar.”

Big Sugar lead singer Gordie Johnson on stage Saturday night.

Brendon Bartlett with his handmade guitar string jewellery is among the vendors featured at the Calabogie Blues and Ribfest.

The fun continued Sunday and the crowds “hung in until the final note.” Reports are still being finalized, but organizers estimate there were 15,000 festival goers over the three days.

Wynne addresses Highway 17 DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Premier Kathleen Wynne spoke to doubts over the planned expansion to Highway 17. Wynne was in Arnprior recently for a funding announcement. While there she took questions from Metroland Media on topics that affect residents in the valley and Ottawa. Her government’s commitment to twinning the highway

from west of Arnprior to Renfrew has long been an important issue for local community leaders. On Aug. 8, the County of Renfrew obtained a letter from Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca that said, in part, “I am pleased to advise you that the ministry did secure approval to proceed with detail design for the next phase of expansion.” See NO DATE, page 7

CHEO fundraiser Aug. 26

Aidan and Finn Muldoon hold up a CHEO Foundation banner as the two young Renfrew brothers are preparing for their annual fundraiser for the hospital on Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 335 Lisgar Ave.

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

They are determined, dedicated and they need your help. Twelve-year-old Aidan and his younger brother, eightyear-old Finn Muldoon are at it again for their fourth annual fundraising raffle for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). The raffle will be held on their front lawn, with the many prizes on display, on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 335 Lisgar Ave. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $2 per ticket or $5 for three tickets. Last year they had more than 30 items donated by friends and local businesses, including gift certificates and prizes. Over the last three years they have raised close to $2,000 for CHEO. “Each dollar is helping another kid and you can win some cool stuff,” said Aidan. These two young men already know what it means to give back to the community. “There’s a lot of kids who need help and live in the hospital,” said Aidan. “They need money for the equipment and medicine.” “The kids need help,” added Finn. The event is completely organized by Aidan and Finn. “They go out and pick everything up on their own and they are the ones speaking,” said their mom Tricia. “They tell us that the kids at CHEO need help so they don’t want to stop.” She beams with pride as she describes her sons’ work ethic. “I’m very, very proud of them,” said Tricia. “It’s nice to see them do it and they want to do it, that’s the best part.” The idea for the fundraiser started after a trip to Dairy Queen for its annual Miracle Treat Day. Mom Tricia Muldoon explained it was a treat to get a blizzard and why they were supporting the hospital. A few months after their first fundraiser Finn was rushed by ambulance to CHEO to receive treatment for epilepsy. He continues to be treated for the condition. “I can’t imagine life with out CHEO,” said mom Tricia. For Finn the treatments are kid-friendly. “I like that I get to watch movies when I have an MRI, it makes it fun,” said Finn. The event has the full support of the CHEO Foundation. “Partners like this play an important role in making sure the hospital has the necessary tools to help each and every child today, and conduct important research that will lead to more positive outcomes down the road,” said Mandy Arsenault, co-ordinator, special events and community engagement stated in a support letter for the event. “We are very grateful to be working with Tricia Muldoon and her family, and that they chose the CHEO Foundation as a beneficiary.”

No date for highway construction of highways to be considered. They base their decisions on road conditions, safety, traffic volume and other measurables. She is aware design work is beginning on Highway 17, and that is a long process that will produce specific answers related to timelines and costs. “I know this is on the radar of the minister,” said Wynne. “We really need to rely on the integrity of the engineering process.” She admits that politicians do listen to constituents on these matters, but that evidence plays a significant role. She did not specifically say the highway expansion will go ahead if the Liberals are reelected.

Continued from page 3

However, there is no word on when shovels will hit the ground. It has yet to be put on the government’s five-year plan. The cost is unknown. And there is the looming election. Former warden Peter Emon is concerned that a new government could change direction when it comes to infrastructure work. He doesn’t want to see it “become a political football” for the three main parties. Wynne was asked if her party would drop design plans after an election victory. She drew from her time as transportation minister to say experts in the bureaucracy bring forward a list

“Jesus came to heal the broken-hearted and to set the captives free”. He will do it for you.

Fair wages for fair work Minimum wage. Two words that are leading to a maximum amount of discussion these days. Should it go up to $15 as the provincial government is proposing or is this $3.60 per hour increase in wages an action that will cause distress and, some suggest, even cause bankruptcy for businesses. Some economists predict doom and gloom from this increase in the minimum wage. Others say that it will spur the economy. What are we to believe? It seems this decision should not be made on economic predictions, as there are economists on both sides of the issue putting forth what at face value appear to be valid and opposite suppositions. Rather, this is a decision that very much should be made in the context of our Canadian values. Canada is a country that prides itself on equality, fairness and acceptance. In so many situations, Canadians step forward and do (or try to do) what is right and fair and just. It’s part of our DNA. It’s why our society and country are so admired around the world. And so when we know that the prescribed socalled minimum wage is not adequate, we as Canadians should apply our principles of fair play and justice and equality and do something about it. This is what the provincial government is proposing to do, but not without lots of pushback from the business community which seems to view

“minimum wage” as the “maximum wage.” These businesses don’t want to pay a fair wage, just the lowest possible wage. They have been built on low minimum wages and any change will threaten their existence — or so they say. These are businesses that have absorbed increasing electricity rates and presumably will be benefitting from lower power rates beginning this summer. These are businesses that are always susceptible to rent or tax increases. All these varying costs are managed when they happen, either through increasing the charge for products or services or improved, more efficient management. So too can any wage increases. It’s time business stopped relying on this minimum wage crutch and started treating employees with fairness and equality, paying a fair wage for work provided. That’s the Canadian way. We do it in so many of our actions. It’s time we did it for the rate that we pay the workers on the bottom rung of the economic ladder. They won’t be getting rich, but at least they will be closer to earning a living wage that is fair and just. The Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce is hosting a special meeting on Bill 148 Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs with guest speaker Karl Baldauf, vice-president policy and government relations with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. The event is taking place on Sept. 20 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Centre in Pembroke. For more information call 613-732-1492.

MP Gallant knows climate change is a hoax to fund poor countries To the editor:

I’d like to thank Bob Boyer for his timely letter in the July 20 issue of the Renfrew Mercury, ‘Applause for MP Cheryl Gallant for Standing up for Personal Beliefs.’ In defending MP Gallant for standing up for her personal beliefs he is actually typifying the gutless Liberal tolerance for their agenda only, and nothing else - swimming downstream with erroneous dogma. I applaud Cheryl for her stance on man-made global climate change (as her stance on other key issues from the past). She sees the Paris Accord for what it really is: control by the Leftist elites to destroy the economy of the richer nations, the United States being in the forefront, by mandating transfer payments to Third World countries. Isn’t it ironic how Turkey opted

out of the accord when they learned they wouldn’t be receiving cash from the United States, the main contributor. We don’t know how Trudeau has pledged Canada for, but it must be remembered that Stephen Harper was dragging his heels towards this fiasco. Former U.S. President Barack Hussein Obama joined the accord in 2016 by executive order because he knew Congress wouldn’t pass it. The agreement obliged America to pay $100 billion a year to the United Nations, possibly the most corrupt institution in the world. We are supposed to believe the UN will use this money to protect the environment, namely the reduction of carbon dioxide which would be extremely costly; and many governments want to increase regulations, even more rules that would gut

prominent industrial economies. The Left has made climate change something like a religion, an article of faith regardless of the evidence. It is a tool they are using to increase their control. But what about the evidence? Is there really consensus amongst the world’s scientists that human activity is causing catastrophic climate change? Mr. Boyer mentions the oft-quoted 97 per cent of scientists who agree that climate change is real and threatening the planet. Do you know how the 97 per cent figure was arrived at? Well here it is: (Source,The Heartland Institute, International Conference on Climate Change: Art Robinson, Voice of Reason Award) “The 97 percent figure comes from a survey of almost 12,000 peer-re-

viewed science papers conducted by Australian scientist John Cook. The survey actually found a 97 percent consensus only among peer-reviewed papers taking a position on the cause of global warming. The catch is that only 34 percent of the papers took a position on the subject. Since 33 percent of the papers appeared to endorse the notion that humans cause climate change, Cook divided 33 by 34 to arrive at his 97 percent figure. It would be more honest to claim that 1 percent of scientists say humans are not causing climate change, one third of scientists say they are and two-thirds of scientists are not making such dogmatic proclamations. “ “When University of Delaware Prof. David Legates re-examined Cook’s study, he found that even the 33 percent figure might be artifi-

It was a broad-winged bush katydid, and as I watched, its wings opened over its back and their bases began to rub together, producing a series of soft shuffling sounds. It was stridulating! Bryan Murray By Scott Campbell Bryan Murray is my uncle. I sat down to interview him at his summer cottage - found just outside of Ladysmith, Quebec - on August 1. Looking back, it is an honour to have done it. I thank Uncle Bryan, Aunt Geri, cousins Heide, Emma and Addie (the three were visiting at the time), for allowing me this snapshot of time. Bryan Murray has a lifetime of hockey memories making for many stories that could fill plenty of pages. The Washington Capitals hired the Shawville native as head coach in 1981, marking the start of a career in the NHL, which spans five teams. Since those early games, he’s seen the game of hockey change dramatically. “First of all, the toughness in the game is not what it was,” he said. “I think the rule changes with the red line gone and the tag-up rule, and things like that make the game appear faster. It is faster. I think the skill level of the kids today is better overall, and that goes along with being faster. The game is changed, and probably for the most part has changed for the better.”

SHAWVILLE KID

Murray’s story begins in the small Ottawa Valley town of Shawville, Quebec. Bryan is one of 10 children of Rhoda and Clarence Murray, a brother to Laird, Barrie, Darleen, Terry, Bill, Laurie, Lorraine, Karen and Kim. Clarence built the Murray home on King Street in Shawville in the late 1940s. He did most of the work on his own. Until Rhoda’s passing in 2013, it remained in the family.

The Murray clan didn’t live in the house right away. Clarence needed the rent money so everybody moved out to the farm outside of Shawville in Yarm. “I think we were all glad to get back at Shawville at some point,” said Murray. “But I think when we went through that life on the farm there were a lot of great memories of that too.” “I don’t know how mom and dad did it, honestly. We had the benefit of good guidance and parents that made sure we had enough. We never had too much, but we always had enough. They expected discipline and decent behaviour. I think it shows that we’ve all grown up to be pretty reasonable people. When you look back on it, so many great memories and so much fun, I think the closeness of most of us in the family is because of it. “It was a full house, no question. Mom somehow, some ability, whether we were out playing hockey, or out playing baseball, or just coming home from school, she had a meal on the table.” For kids growing up in Shawville, a lot of them chose hockey and baseball to play. Murray played a lot of baseball – senior level to the Upper Ottawa Valley League. The home games actually took place on the fairgrounds, not at the R.A field like now. Teams from Quyon, Campbell’s Bay, Vinton, Fort Coulonge, Sheenboro, Otter Lake, Pembroke, Petawawa and Chalk River provided the competition. There was a lot of hockey too. Murray was skilled enough to play with the seniors when he was 14 or 15 years old. He played against Royce Richardson and others who were twice his age.

16 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, August 24, 2017

“It wasn’t hard to fall in love with hockey. Like a lot of guys around here, I was pretty good at it. Everybody played hockey and that was our outlet,” said Murray. He even drew the attention of one of the NHL expansion teams, the Philadelphia Flyers. “I was playing senior hockey for Shawville in Smiths Falls one night. They watched me before they told me … I scored six goals in the game, which I did a few times in college. They called me the next day and offered me to go to their farm team. I said OK … $20,000. They said Gordie Howe makes $20,000, you can’t make $20,000. That’s what the salaries were.”

PONTIAC HOUSE

Before the call of the NHL came, Murray was a school teacher. When Pontiac Protestant High School first opened, in his eyes, it felt like 600 kids were walking the halls. He helped open Murray’s sporting goods store with brother, Bill. (Bill and his family ran the business for over 40 years.) They built a new building and brother, Barrie, moved in. Murray also bought Pontiac House in 1979. “I went to talk to the owner and the price was right.” Sister Darleen and her husband at the time and Murray’s wife Geri joined in running the business. They sold a pint of beer and a pack of cigarettes for 25 cents and a quart of beer for * 55 cents. It was a time when the tavern catered exclusively to men. Murray remembers Saturday nights and some Fridays in Shawville when all the farmers came into town and people could hardly find a parking spot on the street. “We didn’t rent rooms at the Pontiac House, but we had food, alcohol and bands on the weekend. The place was packed. There was a beautiful dining room and lounge. We had family come in and help us in the kitchen like Lorraine and mom. They helped us a lot. Friday night and Saturdays there would be 100 men in the tavern.” Pontiac House eventually succumbed to a fire and Hursty’s restaurant now resides in the location. Murray coached teams such as the Rockland Nationals and Pembroke Lumber Kings during this businessman period. Then he received an offer from the Western Hockey League Regina Pats to coach there. He told his wife, Geri, he wanted to go out west for one year to say he did it. Regina won the championship, paving the way for his career in the NHL. What if the Washington Capitals had never called? “I probably would have been a businessman in Shawville and maybe taught a little longer,” said Murray. “I would have been a Shawville guy, I think at that stage. I would have been involved in hockey but I don’t think I would have been running out of town a lot. That’s life, you never know.” “I thought I was a good coach, thought I could make part of a living from coaching.”

“I don’t get tired talking about home.” - Bryan Murray

LIFE IN THE NHL

how he treats people and is he a good guy, does he have a chance to be a committed hockey player? I think you evaluate all of that, but I think the bottom line is you try to draft good players and talent. You have to draft certain types and it takes a lot of work and good scouts. If you get three out of seven players to play pro hockey for you, you had a good year.”

General manager David Poile was hired during Murray’s second season, and he made some trades that stimulated fan interest.

Erik Karlsson, Zack Smith, Mark Borowiecki, Chris Wideman, Mike Hoffman, Mark Stone and Jean-Gabriel Pageau are a few - not all - of the notable draft picks made by Murray with the Senators.

Washington was a struggling team when Murray stepped in as head coach. The team had not made the playoffs in eight years. He stayed behind the bench with the Capitals for seven full seasons and earned the Jack Adams Trophy in 1984, as NHL coach of the year.

“It gave the players a sense that we were trying to get better,” said Murray. “We had some great runs like in Game 7 against the Islanders and Pat Lafontaine scored. There’s Game 7 against the Philadelphia Flyers and Dale Hunter scored for us. Fan interest was quite high at that time and it got better. It’s (now a) good hockey hotbed.” The Game 7 against the Islanders is known as the ‘Easter Epic’ in NHL history. The match took four overtime periods to decide and finished in the early hours of Easter Sunday. In 1988, the Capitals were down 3-1 in the playoff series and managed to fight back to force a Game 7 against Philadelphia. The contest went into overtime before Hunter tallied the winner for Washington. Murray next headed to the Detroit Red Wings. It wasn’t smooth sailing, as it was evident on his arrival that the team faced player issues. “I got the chance to go in and help fix that. We had some runs in Detroit. I was only there for four years, but we had a lot of kids, and we knew we were going (to) be really good.” Next up was the Florida Panthers, which managed a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in their third year. Murray helped craft the team for that unexpected run. He remained in Florida until 2000 and then moved on to Anaheim. “In Anaheim, we went from a nothing organization where nobody cared, to drafting (players) really well,” he said. “Tim (Murray) was a big part of that. We drafted Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. We went to the Stanley Cup Final (in 2003) when I hired (former Wing, now Leaf coach) Mike Babcock. We went to Game 7 against New Jersey and lost in New Jersey.” Murray arrived in Ottawa in 2004, but missed an entire season because of the lockout. Murray is still the only modern Senators coach who took the team to a Stanley Cup Final. That 2007 run, he considers a major highlight. The 2016-2017 season was also a memorable one for the Ottawa Senators and Murray. There was plenty of excitement and surprises that didn’t end until the Game 7 double overtime loss to the eventual repeat Stanley Cup champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins, in the eastern final. “Obviously, starting off we weren’t predicted to be a contending hockey team,” said Murray. “But I thought as the year went on we got better. There were a lot of tough games and then making the playoffs and the excitement of winning a couple (of) rounds. The opportunity with Game 7 to move on to the Stanley Cup final, has to be marked as a very good season.” As a general manager, Murray has kickstarted a lot of players’ careers by drafting them. “There have been some surprises and some real disappointments. I think you try to find out is the character of the person. What he behaves like in school, around his parents,

HOME

The old Shawville arena was owned by Ebert Richardson for a period of time. The building, which no longer exists, became known as Richardson’s Rink. Once in a while, a gang would sneak in through the windows for the chance to play indoor hockey. “It was a smaller ice surface,” said Murray. “What that meant was that you had to have skill, you had to be able to control the puck. When I coached - when Boston had the Boston Garden - players had to have the skill because they had to take short passes and quick plays, because people were all over you. You had no room to operate. I always thought the games were better because of that. “Richardson’s Rink was natural ice, small dressing rooms, and a furnace in the rooms to keep you warm and that was it. There was no Zamboni then; most of the time (it was flooded) by a hose. “But Shawville was a great place to grow up,” he said. “Mom cared so much about everything that went on in the family. Dad was in Ottawa working; he probably wasn’t involved early in our life as he could be because of work.” Murray always found time in his off-season to return to summer at the cottage with wife Geri and daughters Heide and Brittany. Son-in-law Don and granddaughters Emma and Addie have spent time there, along with many family and friends. Forty-six years ago, Murray bought the land for $1,800. “People thought I was crazy,” he said. “I’m glad I did it. There was no electricity and no water. We had this big pine tree. We put the drum up in the pine tree, had a motor with a hose. I would go down to start the motor. Geri would wait [until it] started to flood over and I would turn the motor off. That way we would flush toilets. Then we had coal oil lamps and that’s how we started. We were like that for four, five years and then we added power and we grew from that.” Murray’s NHL career took him away from the Shawville area for most the year. In the beginning, teams even travelled on commercial airlines. They flew along with everybody else. Now, it’s a world of difference with teams having their own planes and first class service. The biggest change of all is they can come and go, whenever they want. Yet, no matter how much hockey business there was to do and how far he roamed, Shawville and the Pontiac never seemed to be too far from Murray’s mind. “I don’t get tired talking about home.”

RVH Sleep Products opens in new location on Sept. 5 The Renfrew Victoria Hospital sleep program will soon lay its head down in a spacious new home base at 100 Health Village Ln. This means the respirology clinics, Sleep Products store, and later this year, Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) clinics — all your respirology and sleep services — will operate under one roof for a better customer experience. A related service, the RVH Sleep Apnea Study Laboratory will remain on the third level of the hospital. “Our new space was designed with all of the functional aspects of the sleep program in mind, as well as many other wonderful improvements to help us better serve our clients and customers,” shares Melissa Gourley, registered respiratory therapist and sleep educator. Topping the improvements list is the ease of access on the ground level through the main entrance of the new professional building. “The lack of stairs will be a huge bonus for many of our clients.” Their new accommodations will include a large retail space for sleep equipment and related products, with expanded space for inventory. Gourley says she will have no issue keeping

the store well-stocked with a variety of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines and masks. The program will continue to be staffed by the same experienced technicians who provide service in the sleep lab — registered respiratory therapists or polysomnographic technologists specializing in sleep. In the new store, all patients will be assessed and fitted in one of the three private consult rooms by registered polysomnographic technologists (RPSGT). Patients will use the same waiting area for all clinic appointments when booked with one of three visiting RVH sleep specialists. There are separate clinic rooms for physician consultations. “Before the end of the year, we will also be equipped to run our own OTN clinics — eliminating the need for people to go back and forth between the hospital,” notes Gourley. “Overall, there will be improved flow for our patients and staff.” Since June 2009, RVH Sleep Products has been fitting, selling and servicing sleep apnea products to patients diagnosed with a sleeping disorder such as sleep apnea. In 2014, RVH Sleep Products went digital, with an

Hospice Renfrew donation

A lively crowd of 56 people recently joined in the fun at the Renfrew Golf Club (RGC) Thursday for a mosaic evening in support of Hospice Renfrew. Each person created their one-of-a-kind version of a spring mosaic using glass, beads, tile, paper, string, wire and wood. The group was treated to lovely nibblies created by the RGC kitchen and wonderfully refreshing Steeped Tea cocktails, thanks to Mel Clemmer and Jo-Anne Brown. All proceeds from the 50/50 draw were generously donated back to Hospice Renfrew by Sheila Kemp. Watch for a similar mosaic event next spring. Khloe Bertrand competed in the 29th Annual Northern Ontario Singing Contest on Aug. 3-6 at the Billy Barber Complex Community Centre, which is near North Bay. Khloe, only 13, from Haley Station, entered the 18-and-under category. She had to meet with the band on Thurs, Aug. 3 to go over her songs. With this being her first time ever meeting this band, she nailed it. She could pick the songs of her choice, but one had to predate the 1990s while the other could be more recent. On the rehearsal day, which was Friday afternoon, she wowed the crowd with her rendition

of Daddy’s Hands by Holly Dunn and her upbeat rendition of It Happens by Sugarland. Saturday was the preliminaries. There is a panel of six judges who not only mark these competitors on their vocals, but also on enunciation, dictation, voice range, timing, pitch, feelings, and stage presence. Sunday was the finals and the day to bring it. With Khloe competing against an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old, she knew she had to step it up as they were two very strong competitors. Well, she did just that; her final performance was outstanding and breathtaking. Everyone loved her and she came home with first place.

Many ways to volunteer for Seniors’ Home Support

I think most could agree that at some point in their lives, they have had an experience with a local non-profit in some way or another, whether it is through volunteerism, utilizing a service, or receiving supports. Aside from providing essential services to the community, the goal of the non-profit is to secure funds to maintain programs and services — the message often repeated is the financial needs of our many local service providers and charities, and the importance and demand for ongoing financial support. As a non-profit only partially funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, we at Renfrew and Area Seniors’ Home Support are not unique in our need for funds through donations and sponsorships. However, the ongoing need for volunteers for the operation and sustainability of our programs and in our community is also high and the service they provide is indispensable. We are constantly looking for people to make an investment of their time — money is always important, but it takes real live people taking action and working together to achieve greatness, and without volunteers we would not be able to provide quality services for our clients. For those of us at the Home Support, that investment of time often means something many of us take for granted - human contact, a friendly visit, a welcomed phone call — things money cannot buy. Time is a valuable and priceless gift. In business, time is money. In the current economy, everyone is strapped for both and it is difficult to commit to an ongoing volunteer opportunity with so many conflicting demands. There are many ways an individual can volunteer and donate. Like many non-profits, we have been evolving with the changing landscape and are adapting our volunteer programs to meet the needs of those wishing to volunteer but whose lives do not fit in with traditional volunteer roles. There are many ways an individual can also donate without donating actual money; maybe you have expertise in a particular area and some free time. Advertising, promotion, website design, and social media expertise are all great examples of a valuable donation to a non-profit. Non-profits often do not have the budget and staff resources to make improvements. Our top priority is always investments into programs that are of direct benefit to the clients we serve. The ways in which you can help your favourite charity are endless; it does not have to be in person or on the front line, and it does not have to mean opening up your pocket book, either. It can be through your talents, expertise, creativity, and willingness to think outside the box. Send out that email or make that call — I know we would love to hear from you.

Savickys and O’Donnells win Friday Frolics at Renfrew Golf Club KEVIN SEBULSKI General manager, Renfrew Golf Club

Bev and Greg Savicky and Bob and Cathy O’Donnell were the big winners of Renfrew Golf Club’s most recent Friday Frolics. Even with a bit of rain, everyone had a great evening of golf followed by an Italian dinner hosted by last month’s winners, Sue and Mike Comeau, Robbie Deschamps and Peter Barnes. The Savickys and O’Donnells have promised next month will be a Ukrainian feast! Thank you to the St. Joseph’s High School teachers and Alumni who held their fourth annual golf tournament with us on Saturday. Even though the forecast was for rain all day, the afternoon didn’t see a drop of precipitation. Both ladies and men’s Rec leagues finished up their latest two-week block last Wednesday and Monday respectively. On the ladies side, Captain’s Crew had a total score of 72 and narrowly beat out Sunlifers by a single point with Annie’s Angels only a stroke behind in third. Joining these three teams in A Flight will be Brokerlink Senoritas, who had the low score of the event with an even par 71 and Happy

Hookers. C Flight winners were the Bridies with the Dirty Birdies in second. Both of these teams will be movin’ on up to B Flight and Beside the Green and Sue’s Crew move up from D Flight to C Flight after finishing 1-2. Weekly winners were Diane Wright, Evelyn Miller, Bonnie Thompson and Pat Lee on Aug. 17 and Monica Harrington, Jen Cobus, Diane Wright and Bonnie Carty on August 24. In men’s rec, Rowat Insurance continued their run of winning with a five-shot win over both Schwartz Drywall and Yemen Electric. Joining these three teams in A Flight are OPG and Midtown Flooring who tied atop B Flight. Publican House is starting their climb back up the standings as they move from C to B along with Scott’s Shoes. And the boys from Pontiac along with the Yolkowskie Hackers get to try out their games against C Flight competition after being 1-2 in C Flight. Weekly winners were Sean Rouselle on both #2 and #4, Hank Sukker and Curtis Shepherd on Aug. 7 and Dave Hall, Denis Saumure, Bill James and Sean Rouselle Aug. 14. On Tuesday’s ladies day,

Anne Windle won A Flight with a score of 39, followed by Lisa Smith with a 36 and Mary Peer with a 34.5. In B Flight, Marion Graham won the week with 40.5 points, Dorothy Sharpe was second with 38.5 points with Barb Westgarth third with 37 points. And in C Flight, JoAnne Brown finally made an appearance on ladies night and won the day with a 39. Jo-Anne was followed by both Bev Savicky and Sheila Kemp with 37.5. Paul Simard was the A Flight winner on Thursday men’s day with 21.5 points, with Larry Vice second and Bill James third. The crafty veteran Fergus Wrinn won B Flight, also with 21.5 points by a mere half point over Dave Gallagher with Brian Hewitt third. In C Flight, Brad Sammon won the week with a score of 23. Terry Mosco finished second a half point behind with Peter Cranston a point behind Terry. And in our always entertaining Super Senior division, Dave Cummings was the big winner with 23.5 points followed by Jim Senack 23 points and Bob Gould with 22. Renfrew Golf Club’s Carter Jarrett continued his winning ways last week by winning the Ottawa Valley Golf Association’s (OVGA) Under 13 Match Play title at the Meadows Golf and Country Club in Ottawa. Carter not only had the low score during qualifying with a -1 under 71, he also defeated two other golfers in the semi and finals to win his second OVGA event of the season. This title goes along with Carter’s Ottawa City and District Under 13 title and his third place finish at the Ontario Under 13 Championships. And if that wasn’t enough, Carter made his 1st ever Hole-In-One on Monday morning on the Par-3 17 hole here at Renfrew. Witnessing the shot were his playing partners Lois Butson, Cheryl Campbell and Joyce Stark.

Dragonfly Golf Links crowns champs BILL RAINBOTH General manager, Dragonfly Golf Links

Big thanks to Norm Dagg, and 20 of his family members for choosing Dragonfly for their Family Golf Day on Saturday, Sept. 12. The next group to thank is from Renfrews’ own RCAF Wing who on the same day braved a few passing thunderstorms before completing their 18-hole event. Thank you Mark Guyea for pulling it all together! Pretty busy Saturday right? Well it was even busier when I tell you that on the same day we started the 2017 edition of our club championship. The competition concluded Sunday. Congrats to Jonah O’Connor for winning the men’s title, Donna Falcon for winning the women’s, and to Mike Riopelle for winning the senior championship. I am so proud of

all the participants, including Glenn Wilson who won the men’s B flight, Andrew Wagner who won C flight, and Tamara Adams who won the women B flight. Monday men’s league night convened after a very busy day. Renfrew Pizzeria took a bite out of the competition beating the next best team by seven strokes. Closest to the pin winners were Rob White on #5 and Joey Dufour on #7. On Tuesday The Renfrew Rehabs were in fine form winning A flight, and Team Dragonfly were the winners of B flight. Closest to the pin winners were Kevin Cybulski on #5, and player assistant extraordinaire, Russ Rousselle on #7. On Wednesday Cobus Homes crafted a great round to win A flight, and the Mountain Men found themselves at the summit of B

flight. Reg Scully was closest on #5, and Ken Dick (my student and protégé) was closest on #7. The rain held off Thursday night to allow our ladies league to proceed without a drop. Scorching the A flight were the Red Hot Hybrids, team Seriously (?) won B flight, and Closest to Pinned were the winners of C flight. Closest to the pin winners were Amanda Cameron on #5, April Scheuneman on #7, Julie Mahusky on #13, and Claire Rouble on #18. As I conclude the composition of this article we look forward to the Ottawa Sun Scramble on Tuesday, Aug. 22. This “premier” event brings over 110 golfers from across the Ottawa Area to showcase our humble course here at Dragonfly. I know it will be a great day for all involved. See next week’s article for details.

Aikenhead’s Hospice Classic raises $35,000 for Hospice Renfrew JO-ANNE DOWDALL-BROWN Hospice Renfrew

The 11th annual Aikenhead’s Hospice Classic was played Aug. 11 under the beautiful skies overlooking the Renfrew Golf Club. Golf course superintendent Dave Wilson had the course in pristine condition after a large rainfall the previous night. The efforts of the committee, sponsors, volunteers and players were able to raise $35,000 for Hospice Renfrew. Executive director Maureen Sullivan-Benz stated that this would cover the water and hydro bills for a year! An amazing effort by all of the staff at the club under

the direction of Kevin Sebulski resulted in 156 players on and off the course, fed, prizes given and on their way home hours before nightfall. Leonard Lewis of Renfrew was the lucky $3,000 draw winner. The lowest-scoring team was the mixed team of Dan Buch, MJ Buch, Morgan Buch and Cooper Brown, scoring a 56. The men’s team from Apotex, Tom Van Natter, Gord Davies, Doug Kinna and Paul Chow, came in second with a score of 59. The ladies’ team of Patty Brydges, Vi Rossy, Sheila Kemp and Simone Kemp tied with a 72 and won by retrogression. We are looking forward to the 12th annual tourney on Aug. 17, 2018. A big thank-you to everyone involved!

BACK TO SCHOOL & FALL REGISTRATION

TSA Thrift Shop Supports Child Poverty Action Network

On July 31, Trinity St. Andrew (TSA) Thrift Shop presented $980 to Lyn Smith, the executive director of the Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) for their Tools for School campaign. In 2000 CPAN started helping a few local children in need with back-to-school supplies and shoes on a case-by-case basis. This program has grown, as CPAN currently helps between 1000 and 1500 Renfrew County students in need annually, allowing them to return to school prepared and ready to learn. Sponsorship is only $75 per student, a relatively small dollar amount that makes a huge differSubmitted ence in the life of that child in need. Lyn Smith from CPAN receives a cheque for $980 from thrift shop volunteer Faye Gagan. This donation of $980 to Tools for School will provide supplies, backpacks, and shoes for over 13 local children in need this September. Research proves that children who go to school fully prepared are more likely to graduate and transition to post-secondary education, breaking the cycle of poverty and allowing every child the opportunity to reach their full potential in life. To celebrate Canada’s 150th year, CPAN has also challenged groups in Renfrew County to help children by raising $150 to sponsor 2 local children in need. August 17th, 24th & 31st This can be raised in many ways, one is to

simply fill a 500 ml bottle with dimes and that will come close to the target of $150. CHALLENGE

TSA is taking on this challenge with the help of its congregation and encourages others to follow suit. For more information on CPAN’s other programs that take action against child poverty, please visit their website www.renfrewcountycpan.ca, or ‘Like” their Facebook Page at: www. facebook.com/childpovertyactionnetwork. The TSA Thrift Shop (basement of the United Church – corner of Plaunt and Quarry) sells clothing, books and small household goods at affordable prices. A portion of net sales is given back to the community each quarter. TSA Thrift Shop hours are Mondays 10 a.m. to noon, Thursdays 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (except holiday weekends). Donations of goods may be made when the Shop is open. Enter through the Quarry Avenue entrance. The Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) recently hosted its annual Golf Fore Kids tournament at the Oaks of Cobden. Over 100 golfers participated in the day-long event where golfers and non-golfers alike enjoyed lunch, dinner and prizes. “This year’s tournament was bigger and better than last year,” said RCDSB chair Wendy Hewitt. “It showed us the generosity that runs through Renfrew County and I am pleased to know that the funds raised will help many students who are not able to participate in school activities, events and programs due to financial strain.” Golf Fore Kids was established as a signature fundraiser for the Student Support Fund (SFF). The mission of the SFF is to provide opportunities for RCDSB students in all our schools across the county by providing financial support. As a registered charity, the SSF is managed by a committee of between five and seven members, including a combination of board staff and community members. There is a minimum of one elementary and one secondary principal or vice principal, one of which acts as the committee chair. Committee members may serve two year terms and the chair may serve for two consecutive terms. Donations from the public and businesses will be used to provide mini grants to schools who distribute them to students. By providing support to students that would normally face challenges due to financial constraints, the SSF is aimed at enhancing the educational outcomes of each student so that we can ultimately improve the health

world, one must make even the smallest contributions to assist and improve the well-being of the people around them.” During his time at Queen’s, Johnathan spent much time working and volunteering on activities within the Alma Mater Society, such as Walkhome, a service that walks students home late at night and Ooch, (group that supports a camp for children with cancer). Off campus, he spent time volunteering with the Kingston humane society, as well as the food bank over the four years he attended Queen’s. “Of course, I must thank the Wasmund Family, because without their WFMS Scholarship, none of this would have been possible. He stated, “Thanks to them, I was able to focus not only on my studies, but also devote time to what really matters when leaving home: growing as an individual, forging friendships that will last a lifetime and most importantly, providing the time to discover who I am as a person.” As for the future, Johnathan plans to take the next year off to work and travel (likely to Southeast Asia), before he heads off to college to pursue a degree in paramedics. COURTNEY MILLER

Courtney Miller, the daughter of Glen and Annette Miller, grew up in Renfrew, where she attended Renfrew Collegiate Institute. Following in the footsteps of her two older sisters, Courtney has earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours) at Queen’s, majoring in biochemistry with a science minor in mathematics. Courtney chose to major in biochemistry, following her first year of immersion into fundamental science courses. The next three years were filled with biochemistry-related courses and labs that focused on interactive seminars and challenging current topics. She stated: “I am definitely glad that I chose to study biochemistry, as it is an expanding field that provides many new medical uses and future

research opportunities. “Academically, I enjoyed my studies and completed my four years very successfully by maintaining a place on the prestigious Dean’s Honours List every year. “I was also delighted to win the Craine Professor Scholarship on graduation. “Extracurricularly, I was able to participate in many activities at Queen’s and in the Kingston community. “In my second and third years, I volunteered at the Kingston General Hospital where I primarily offered direct patient care, support and information to patients in the Cancer Centre. In my third and fourth years, I actively engaged in weekly visits with the After School Buddies Club at Queen’s. “Many lifelong friendships were kindled through these encounters. “My future plans are to get accepted into a Pharmacy school and obtain a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. “I have already completed my interviews, so am now awaiting acceptance offers from the different schools. “I have had a wonderful four years at Queen’s and I am sad to leave. “I am very thankful to the Wasmund Family for the opportunity to receive the WFMS Scholarship that helped relieve financial burdens and let me focus on my time at Queen’s, academically and personally. “I can’t imagine completing my undergraduate training anywhere else.” The families of Courtney and Johnathan, along with members of the Wasmund Family who endowed the scholarship awards, are very proud of their accomplishments at Queen’s University and offer sincere congratulations on their graduations as well as best wishes for splendid future careers. They are great tributes to their families and the citizens of North Hastings and Renfrew counties.

NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT Design-Build for Highway 132 Constant Creek Bridge Replacement Highway Realignment and Pavement Reconstruction Townships of Bonnechere Valley, Greater Madawaska and Admaston/Bromley DB 2016-4001 THE PROJECT The Miller Group (Miller) and their design consultant Morrison Hershfield (MH) have recently been selected by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to undertake the Detail Design Study and complete the replacement of the Highway 132 Constant Creek Bridge. Also included within this project is a realignment of Highway 132 to accommodate the replacement bridge, as well as pavement repairs and culvert replacements. The existing bridge will remain open to traffic throughout construction. The recommended plan for these improvements to Highway 132 was determined during a Preliminary Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study that was completed and documented in a Transportation Environmental Study Report in September 2013. The limits of the project extend along Highway 132 from the junction with Highway 41 to Renfrew Road 5, as shown in the following Key Plan.

THE PROCESS The study will follow the approved planning process for a Group ‘B’ project in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000) with the opportunity for public input throughout the study. The design phase has recently started and should conclude in fall 2017. The construction phase is expected to start in winter 2017 and be completed in fall of 2020. Although there could be some temporary disturbances to local traffic due to construction staging, the existing Constant Creek Bridge will remain open to traffic throughout construction. A Design and Construction Report (DCR) that documents Detail Design and proposed mitigation to avoid or offset negative impacts associated with the project will be prepared and made available for a 30-day public review period. Advance notice of the DCR review period will be placed in this publication and mailed to individuals and organizations on the project’s stakeholder mailing list, once details become known. COMMENTS We are interested in hearing any comments or concerns that you may have with the study. House hopping with visitors MARY COOK Memories

Mother never seemed to be concerned about the number of people who would descend on our farm to spend the weekend. Goodness knows there wasn’t much sleeping room, with only four beds in the whole house to put down the seven of us in our own family! It wasn’t unusual for three or four carloads of relations to arrive at the same time, and Mother greeted them with open arms, and as suitcase after suitcase was unloaded, you didn’t have to be the sharpest knife in the drawer to know they planned on staying overnight! This onslaught of visitors usually came when Mother’s brother, Uncle Lou, was arriving from New York. Father would say it was like someone had sent out a carrier pigeon with the news to our relatives in Montreal, Ottawa, and sometimes even as far away as St. Catharines, that Uncle Lou was coming, and that was all it took. Aunt Vanetta, Uncle Johnny, Aunt Lil, Uncle Dick, and my cousin Richard would be the first to arrive from Ottawa, and always they brought dinner rolls, a store-bought cake from the bakery and bags of oranges and bananas. Aunt Vanetta, who I thought was the picture of the Queen, came wearing a fancy hat, and it never left her head, except when she sat down for a meal. As aunts, uncles and cousins arrived I would wonder where everyone was going to sleep. But that seemed to be the least of Mother’s worries. We younger ones would be bedded down crossways in a bed. sometimes as many as five or six of us, and of course, Aunt Vanetta and Uncle Johnny got Mother and Father’s bed, being the most senior of the visitors. Meals were served right from the stove, everyone loading his plate, and heading for a chair either inside, or out in the grape arbour. And the old Findlay Oval fair jumped all weekend, with the oven full of roasts or chickens, and with potatoes and vegetables cooked in the preserving kettles in-

stead of the pots we usually used. Once the supper meal was cleared away, the real festivities began. Mother, Grandfather and Mother’s brothers, sang at the top of their lungs, and to me it sounded just like a choir coming off the movie screen I once saw in the O’Brien theatre in Renfrew. And as the evening wore on, they were spurred on by the tumblers of homemade brew Father brought up from the cellar. Where they came from, I had no idea, but sometime during the early evening, my brother Everett would go outside with the older cousins, and put up two large tents. There were no cots or beds inside, but feather covers and quilts would be used for mattresses, and sometime during the night, the overflow would wander out, find a spot to lie down, and settle in for a few hours sleep. The next day, the party would start all over again. To me, having car loads of relatives come for a weekend, was even better than a trip into the Renfrew fair! On Sunday, of course, Aunt Vanetta would insist on being driven into Renfrew for mass. And again, the music and singing would start. I would find a place to sit where I could watch my mother, her brothers and Grampa with their voices raised in song, and I would think we were the luckiest family in the entire world. Such talent, I would think. I dreaded when it was time for them to pack up their cars and head out. They wouldn’t go empty-handed. The back seats in the cars would be filled with trussed-up chickens, meat from the smoke house, potatoes and vegetables from the garden, and Father would make sure that each car went out the lane with a bottle of his homemade brew. The tents would be down, and long after they were gone, I could hear voices in my head. It took a few days to put the house back in order, and all that was left to remind us of their visit, were a couple bananas and an orange. But best of all, Mother would be humming and full of joy, and for those few days, her longing for her beloved New York would be forgotten.

Bridge Club boldness not rewarded MIKE NAGRODSKI

The Renfrew Bridge Club saw 12 full tables of dedicated players turn out Aug. 16. Now, while no one would ever accuse the Renfrew players of being timid, perhaps the kindest description of the day’s play would be to say that: “a number of players were bidding with unwarranted enthusiasm.” Though many of the contracts did make with overtricks, others failed (and suffered a penalty double) by three or more tricks. Ouch! Slam contracts were attempted on nine occasions and not a single one was successful. Double ouch! Board 19 was a prime example of the type of adventurous bidding that was going on,

as every possible flavour of suit contract was attempted; spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. Not surprisingly, though the board was played nine times, only two of the varied contracts squeaked home successfully. Sometimes caution really is the best policy. Congratulations to the Aug. 16 winners - North – South: 1: Jeannie Yagminas - Mona Brydges 2: Arthur Ham – Phyllis Brennan 3: Carol Sulpher - David Sulpher East – West: 1: Loretta Hennessy - Carolyn Milford 2: Bruce Tennant - Judy Hill 3: Audrey Jukes - Eleanor Thompson

INSIDE

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, change is afoot, but there is no use trying to cling to the past. Look to the future and find a way to embrace the changes and challenges that lie ahead.
