Josh Barnes of the host Renfrew Golf Club hits out of the bunker to the 13th green. He bogeyed the hole on day one of the Ontario under-17 championships, but birdied the par-three 14th. He and Lauren Middlemiss of Whitetail Golf Club were the only local golfers competing in the three-day event. For details, see pages 33 and 34.
News - It wasn’t the best of summer holidays for Pontiac County Warden Mike McCrank, but he’s hopeful the county’s business climate will improve following the most recent Quebec Superior Court ruling. Instead of enjoying time off in mid-August, McCrank found himself back on the job trying to prevent the dismantling of the local Canadian National rail line. Then, in an Aug. 20 hearing, a Quebec judge asked CN to respect a local bylaw that stops the dismantling of CN’s rail lines within the county. In a carefully-worded response, Jim Feeny, the Canadian National vice-president of corporate and governmental affairs, specified that CN had agreed to cease dismantling of its rail until the next hearings, scheduled for Oct. 10 and 11 of this year. The injunction, says Pontiac director general RÊmis Bertrand, gives the county more time to establish its case, and to work to obtain some support from the federal and provincial government. As of Monday, Bertrand says the

county hasn’t heard from the premier’s or prime minister’s office, but had been speaking with the regional ministry for Outaouais. “We’re not expressing disappointment, said Feeny. “From CN’s point of view, we were asked to agree to halt removal of the rail until October and CN has agreed to do so. Until that Aug. 20 decision, MRC Pontiac had kept a vehicle parked across the rail line, between the Litchfield industrial park and Portagedu-Fort. Rail cars parked on the line ready for dismantling and storage of the rail line’s equipment have left the county. Earlier this year, CN dismantled its local line between Pembroke and Beachburg. Ensuing protests or calls for government action included an MRC Pontiac staff protest Aug. 13 when one of the county’s vehicles was left parked on the rail line. There was also an Aug. 19 news conference that included a demonstration by more than a dozen placard-waving local citizens. As examples, placards asked that CN not derail its future and exclaimed that CN’s closure will kill the community. The Superior Court decision Aug. 20 gives the county a chance to present its case. “To me, it’s a good thing because at least we have a chance to organize and to present our view to the judge, said Philippe of the Superior Court’s ruling Aug. 20.
