Fair season is here
Never too old for fair fun
Tiffany Lepack/Metroland
The Cobden Fair was held on Aug. 25 to 27 at the fairgrounds in Cobden with tons of fun for the young and young at heart. One of the many attractions at the fair were the rides, of course, which were enjoyed by eight-year-old Ruby Dunn and her grandfather Barry Breen, 73 years young. The two were out on a sunny Saturday, Aug. 26. For more coverage of the Cobden Fair, see pages 2 and 13.

Construction to start on Plaunt Street with $1.1-million project increase Tiffany Lepack tiffany.lepack@metroland.com
Renfrew councillors were visibly upset as they discussed a $1.1 million increase for an upcoming construction project. The Plaunt Street Phase II project (from Railway Avenue to dead-end of Plaunt Street North) was originally set to cost $2,047,271. However, after a detail design, addition of work on Munroe Avenue East, and only two tenders, the project has now come in at $3,161,752 or a difference of $1,114,480. “I have a really hard time of swallowing a $1.1-million oversight,” said Coun. Tom Sidney at the Aug. 22 meeting. “We’ve got to get better and more accurate, I am getting really frustrated.” Renfrew development and works director Mike Asselin explained to council they had done their due diligence and there are a number of factors that contributed to the increase: short time frame to construct, contractors are busy due to the poor weather, a limited number of bidders and the addition of work to be done on Munroe Avenue East. “When the project was in the detail design stage, the designers found storm water connections that were diverted to the sanitary sewer. Proper design required the storm drainage from the road
be directed to a storm sewer, which required an outlet to be improved from Plaunt Street to the ravine at Legion Park,” explained Asselin. Staff presented the committee numerous options, including not moving forward. The basic repair was an additional cost of $300,000, however the public works committee felt if one side was being repaired, the other side should be repaired as well, which increased the cost to $450,000. Sidney thought staff should have caught the Munroe issues earlier. “It required the detail design phase to identify it, it was previously unknown to the town until the detail design phase identified the deficiency,” stressed Asselin. Another reason for the late start of the project was the timing and conditions of two key grants that are helping to fund the project. The town received $517,331 from the federal Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF) and an additional $258,666 from the provincial CWWF in May. With this funding the project must be completed in March 2018 (60 per cent of the funds must be spent prior to this date, the town is eligible to apply for an extension in 2018).
Coun. Mike Coulas addressed the grant situation and some discussion to re-tender or put a pause on the project. “If we turn this thing down our chance to be awarded (grant money) in the future becomes less because we turned this down,” said Coulas. “We are between a rock and a hard place. It’s the cost of doing business, that’s the situation we are in. We can’t turn it down, it makes no sense to turn down three quarters of a million dollars.” Both Mayor Don Eady and Sidney agreed the committee worked on this project. “There was much discussion at the public works committee on this,” said Eady. “That is part of the game you play in this grant thing. I have to defend the public works committee as there was much discussion, every question asked here was asked at committee. I guess we could always say we could of done this … at the end of the day we are trying our best to handle it.” Council approved, with Coun. Andrew Evans and Sidney opposing, awarding the contract to Bonnechere Excavating Inc. for the reconstruction of Plaunt Street Phase 2 at a cost of $2,946,754. Pre-construction meetings have already occurred and construction will start the first week of September.

OPP arrest suspects Woman dies in White Lake road collision after foot chase Derek Dunn
derek.dunn@metroland.com
Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com
Police made arrests following a crime spree that stretched from Calabogie to Arnprior’s outer limits. OPP from the Renfrew detachment were busy responding to two break-and-enters on the morning of Aug. 24. One was in Calabogie, the other Admaston/Bromley. “We responded to a third at 1:25 (p.m.) and interrupted the culprits on Calabogie Road in McNab/Braeside township,” said Const. Janice Sawbridge. “They fled in a white Mazda.” A home was then broken into in the Pine Grove Road area just outside Arnprior. A male and female fled on foot, Sawbridge said. The car was recovered in a nearby ditch with damage to the passenger side. Several police vehicles descended on the scene, including the K-9 unit and emergency response team (whose members wear military fatigues). “Two suspects were subsequently located and arrested in a bush area,” Sawbridge said. They were not carrying guns, but OPP is investigating possible missing firearms from the break and enters. They are waiting on a warrant to search the vehicle. “We are really happy to say we arrested two people,” she said. “They are not from this area.” The two are from Clarence Rockland, east of Ottawa, and await a bail hearing.
Woman hurt in ATV crash Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
One woman is in stable condition after an ATV collision over the weekend. Ontario Provincial Police responded to the call at approximately 5:50 p.m. on Aug. 26 on private property on Southside Way in the Township of Greater Madawaska. “I have no update at this time,” said Const. Janice Sawbridge on Aug. 28. “The only thing I can release is that it is a female operator. We are not releasing the name at this time.” Sawbridge also noted there is no update on any related charges at this time. The woman was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries after the single ATV collision and was updated to stable on Aug. 27. She was operating the ATV when she lost control and was ejected according to the police release. Technical Collision Investigators are assisting with the investigation.
Man charged with weapons offences On Wednesday, Aug. 23 officers were conducting a RIDE Spot Check at Hwy. 132 near Riverview Drive in Admaston/Bromley. A male refused the demand to conduct field sobriety tests and was arrested. A search incident to the arrest resulted in officers seizing a loaded prohibited firearm, ammunition and drugs. A 27-year-old male of Renfrew was charged with: failing or refusing to provide a breath sample; possession of a schedule one substance - morphine; two counts of possession of a schedule two substance - cannabis resin; three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon; carrying concealed weapon; occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm; Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a prohibited weapon; occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was ammunition; and possession of a loaded prohibited weapon. The accused appeared in bail court in Pembroke on Aug. 24. Provincial Const. Sarah Darraugh led the investigation.
A woman died at the scene of a single motor vehicle collision on White Lake Road on Monday, Aug. 28. The dark blue Ford Fusion was heading down toward Arnprior sometime before 6:25 a.m. The steep road curves at that point. The compact car crossed to the far side and slammed into a wooded area. She was found dead at the scene. Initial information provided by OPP indicated she was thrown from the vehicle when in fact OPP discovered her, when they arrived on scene, near the vehicle.
OPP will not release her name before next of kin is notified; also until the coroner’s office, which leads the investigation, finishes its duties. Technical collision investigators are assisting. White Lake Road remained closed Monday evening, with detours in place. Traffic from the village of White Lake was rerouted onto Highland Road toward Waba and Pakenham. Kippen Road to Stewartville Road is another option. From Arnprior, traffic was directed to Robertson Line, again toward Pakenham. Derek Dunn/Metroland OPP will provide updates A woman was killed during this single vehicle collision on White as more information becomes Lake Road. available.

Renfrew Fair runs Sept. 6 to 10 with something for everyone Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
The Renfrew Fair, without a doubt, is not only “the greatest fair in the Ottawa Valley since 1853,” but is the best fair around. It is a tradition, a time to run into to family and friends in the grandstands while rocking out and having not one but most likely two bacon-on-a-bun sandwiches. There truly is something magical about sitting on the large ferris wheel and appreciating the fair in all its glory and knowing all the hard work that goes into it. Little eyes, some for the very first time, gaze at the lights and sounds of the rides, fish for a certain prize and devour cotton candy. All year, exhibitors work passionately to prepare something for the exhibit hall, and a red or blue ribbon rewards them for all of their hard work. And who can forget about the award-winning cattle and other
animals on display for farmers to appreciate and to pass on their knowledge to the next generation. This year the 163rd Renfrew Fair runs from Sept. 6 to 10, with entertainment that appeals to numerous generations. The gates open on Wednesday at 2 p.m., with the Exhibit Hall and Armouries and the rides by Carter Shows open at 5 p.m. Family Day, free admission to children up to 16 years of age, is Sept. 7, the gates open at 9 a.m., the rides start at 2 p.m., the official opening is at 6:30 p.m. and ‘Whiskey Jack presents Stories and Songs of Stompin’ Tom’ at 8 p.m. on the grandstand. Then on Friday, Sept. 8, the ever-popular heavy horse show featuring the North American Six-Horse Hitch Classic starts at 1 p.m. and the fair goes country with Valley boys Rainwater Whiskey and River Town Saints at 8 p.m. at the grandstand. On Saturday, horse and cattle and 4-H shows start at 9 a.m., with the heavy horse show back
at 1 p.m., and that night Lighthouse performs at 8 p.m. on the grandstand. The last day of the fair is Sunday, with gates opening at 9 a.m. and closing at 5 p.m. At 10:30 a.m. is the Ultimate Cowboy Obstacle Race. View a detailed schedule of the fair online at www.renfrewfair.com/renfrew-fair-poster-2017. Advance tickets are on sale until Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m., for five admissions: $40, a savings of $10. Cost to get into the fair is $10 for adults, children seven to 16, $5, and children under six, free. Parking cars on the grounds will cost $5. Advance ride vouchers are now on sale and can be purchased until Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. The vouchers are good for any one day at the fair for an unlimited ride bracelet, and cost $25 in advance and $35 at the fair. The annual Demo Derby at the Renfrew Fair always draws a huge crowd. This year it is set for Wednesday, Sept. 6
Demo derby set for Sept. 6 Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
It’s time to get crashing. One of the most bashing, banging good times at the fair is back again. A fall favourite, the annual demo derby is set for Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Renfrew Fair grandstand. Entry forms can be picked up at the fair office Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. prior to the fair, but all applicants must register before Sept. 6. Entry forms are available on a first come, first served basis until they run out.
GRAND ROUNDS Employer adds to volunteer support of ATS program Becoming a volunteer with RVH’s Addictions Treatment Services (ATS) was an easy choice for Marci Joyce. Being recognized for it by her employer is icing on the cake. The Renfrew RBC Branch Manager was selected as a recipient of the bank’s Employee Volunteer Grant that recognizes employees by supporting the charity for which they volunteer. “RBC is passionate about volunteering and helping our communities prosper. It’s one aspect of my job that gives me a lot of pride,” states Joyce. “We have been fortunate to receive three donations from RBC/Marci—$500 each time,” says ATS Service Director Kim MacLeod, noting that Marci has been a valuable advisory committee member for the past 6 years. “Her commitment to helping those who struggle with substance abuse or gambling issues is to be respected and honoured,” adds MacLeod.
Joyce shares that her involvement with ATS comes from a very personal place, having lost her father to a drug overdose when he was 37 and she was just 13. “It’s something that impacts the rest of your life. I needed to find a way to get involved, to contribute in some way.” While the program is funded by the Champlain LHIN, local support is key to help the ATS program promote awareness in the community. “I want to keep building awareness, inclusivity, and acceptance for those struggling—as well as their loved ones, as they struggle too,” notes Joyce. The funds received from RBC/Joyce have been used to advertise in the community in an attempt to educate people about the availability of ATS services, and connect with those who may benefit from them. “We are so appreciative of Marci’s continued support and feel that her contributions have led to many people

MacLeod and Joyce also co-facilitate a monthly support group in partnership with Parents’ Lifelines of Eastern Ontario for parents and caregivers of those suffering with mental health and/or addiction challenges. “We are connecting with people in a way that they feel safe and know they are not alone, or judged. Canada should focus on its issues The events in Charlottesville, Virginia where a clash between white nationalists and counter protesters turned violent and deadly have exposed the racial divisions that still exist in the United States. That such racism is still percolating in the United States is depressing, especially after the country elected its first black president in Barack Obama, seemingly closing in on the end of such racism. Then along came Donald Trump and suddenly racism has blossomed again in that society. Racism seems so Neanderthal-like when it happens. But sometimes there is no rationale for human behaviour. For instance, there’s lots of evidence of the health dangers from smoking. Yet people smoke. There’s much scientific evidence of the adverse impact of climate change on the world. And yet some continue to deny its existence. So, we humans are a doubting bunch – move over, St. Thomas! And yet, why does racism continue to hold such sway over us humans? Before we Canadians get on some high horse on this matter, let us not forget our attitude towards Jews in pre-war decades, our treatment of Japanese Canadians in the Second World War and, most depressingly, our residential schools’
history and our treatment of indigenous peoples in general. We are far from innocent on this human rights/racism file. We view ourselves as a nation that values equality and fair treatment of all. But while these attitudes can be legislated and preached, the challenge remains to wipe racism from the thoughts and actions of our society. The United States, as the events in Charlottesville show, has not eliminated racism in that society. And we in Canada, given our current ineffective grappling with our indigenous legacy, find ourselves in a similar scenario. Let the States worry about its situation, Hopefully its racism will be eliminated someday. But for us, we should resolve our indigenous quandary. Politicians continue to talk about the issue but we need action and we need it now! Let’s get it resolved so that we can all go forward together as a true society that not only talks the talk but walks the walk when it comes to fairness and equality and universal respect for one and all. We have seen in Charlottesville what happens when racism and bigotry are allowed to fester. That’s not the route that we as Canadians should travel. Rather, let’s get done what needs to be done and let’s get it done now.
Minimum wage increase is a common sense issue How much more evidence is needed? To the editor;
I’m not sure what was more appalling about the recent editorial about minimum wage increases, the absence of math or the absence of basic economics. First, if it’s the Canadian way to push a minimum wage increase of this magnitude on to every business in Canada then I must have missed the part about living in a democracy. What hypocrisy. This newspaper uses boys and girls ages 10 to 13 to deliver its papers, and, at what, $2 maybe $3 per hour? I’m guessing a new policy is in the works where older students are hired at $15 per hour to deliver papers and mileage paid as well, it’s the Canadian way right? Newspapers all across the world have had to lay off thousands of employees because the bottom line of all business has to be met.

But, your editorial states that it’s up to large and small businesses to ante up and pay more for unskilled labour. Ok, fine, and here’s where math and economics comes in. To a small business the addition of costs mean that either, the product they make has to go up, the amount of employees they have on payroll has to go down, or, the cost of business has to go down, and that would mean less advertising, less charitable donations, etc. You see, no business, small or large “absorbs” cost increases, that’s just a silly thing to say, consumers absorb costs increases, always have, always will. The final issue I have with the editorial is, you fail to address the root cause of trying to live on minimum wage. Education. The education in this country and in this province fails our children. Why are so many young people
working for minimum wage and not moving into better paying jobs? The answer is education. The average welder in Ontario is 58 years old, a qualified welder should make $35 per hour, and this is the same for most trades. Why are so many students attending Liberal arts schools when upon graduation they have absolutely very little skills to offer most businesses. I agree that a fair wage is important to every Canadian, but, the answer is not increasing the minimum wage from 11$ to 15$ per hour. The answer is for one political party to have the courage to offer up an answer to our abysmal education system and offer our children better choices. This is not a left or right issue, its a common sense issue. Bill Griese Arnprior
To the editor:
When Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant stood alone in the House of Commons to vote against the Paris Climate Accord, I thought she stood alone here in the Valley, but no, some people actually applauded her courage. Courage, some might call it, but in reality it is ignorance. Her climate change denial is as ignorant as the U.S. president who claims it is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese and Frank Scheer claims it is a hoax to fund poor countries. Help, I think I am living in Cloud Cuckoo Land! How much more evidence is needed? BC salmon numbers are down for many reasons and one is the warmer water caused by increased CO2. The permafrost is melting, causing houses to sink and due to the organic nature of the ground, it catches

Weather upheavals are happening throughout the world. Polar bears are starving because of the receding ice shelves. This is a small sample of climate change as a result of global warming which is man-made due to our reliance on fossil fuels. We must all reduce our carbon footprints for the sake of our children and grandchildren and not let hysterical climate deniers ignore real modern science. Farm leaders send message to NAFTA negotiations on behalf of Canadian farmers Renfrew county National Farmers Union
Tim Tabbert, president of the Renfrew County National Farmers Union said as the first round of talks to renegotiate NAFTA have wound up, organizations from Canada, the U.S. and Mexico are concerned about the possible talks. Despite repeated demands by civil society organizations in all three countries, the governments have refused to open talks to the public or to publish proposed negotiating texts. All signs point to negotiations designed to increase agribusiness exports and corporate control over the food system, rather than to support fair and sustainable trade and farming systems. Tabbert noted Jan Slomp, the president of the National Farmers Union (NFU), has recently reported that under NAFTA and its forerunner, the Canada-US FTA, farm

input costs have gone up and inflation-adjusted commodity prices have dropped, yet the farmer’s share of the grocery dollar is smaller. “We export more, but imports have increased faster, which means our share of our own domestic market is actually shrinking,” Slomp said. Farms in Renfrew County are experiencing this same decline, Tabbert said. Jim Goodman, a Wisconsin dairy farmer and member of the National Family Farm Coalition agreed. “Federal and state governments and Land Grant Universities, at the behest of the dairy industry, have done all they can to encourage the U.S. dairy farmers to produce more milk, never questioning how much milk might be too much or how the subsequent cheap prices affect farmers. “We cannot expect Canada, at the expense of their dairy farmers, to bail us out,” Good-

man said. He added: “Farmers, whether U.S. or Canadian, are nothing more than part of the machine to the industry and NAFTA. That’s the way free trade works.” Tabbert added, the first round of talks in Washington concluded with a media statement. “There is a great deal of work to be done in order to upgrade this NAFTA deal.” The leaders of the NFU (Canada) and farm organizations from the US and Mexico continue to work to send a strong message, he said. “The message is that the goal of the NAFTA deal should be to restore national sovereignty over food and farm policy to support local farming communities. “The Canadian supply management is part of that farm policy and food sovereignty and must not be negotiated,” Tabbert concluded.

RVH
GROWING FORWARD
August 2017 • In partnership with the Renfrew Mercury
Leading the way in rural telemedicine Anyone who has ever had to drive to the city for a doctor’s appointment knows all too well the burden associated with the journey. It’s taxing for both patients and their caregivers, costly, stressful, and time consuming. Luckily for many patients in Renfrew and the surrounding area, access to a specialist is just a click away. With RVH’s telemedicine unit, many local patients are able to utilize services for pre-op, post-op and assessment care with their specialist right at RVH. Assisted by a nurse, patients meet “screen-to-screen” with their doctor. State-of-the-art equipment like a hand-held camera and telesteth allow specialists the ability to monitor patient heart and lung sounds, and mobility, view wounds and provide pre- and postoperative care without the patient ever leaving Renfrew. “It’s an extremely convenient healthcare service here in our community,” says Anne McGregor-Prince, whose mother directly benefited from the telehealth services at RVH. “Mom could be assessed by her neurologist within a five-minute commute from her home. With the help of the nurse, Dr. Mendes could do the full assessment over video and we were in and out within fifteen minutes. What would have easily been a half- or full-day appointment in Ottawa was done within half an hour door-to-door.” “The fact that telemedicine can make whatever journey a patient is going through a little easier is a very rewarding feeling,” states Nelly Bertrand, current Telemedicine Coordinator. “Bonnie Nolan (previous coordinator) worked very hard to make telemedicine at RVH what it is today, and it’s clear that her hard work has paid off for our patients.” “In addition to the value for patients and families, our physicians and medical staff have the opportunity to take part in a variety of training sessions using this equipment,” states Kim Dick, Nursing Manager for ER and Clinics. “This is of tremendous value to us, as it allows us to stay in-house while accessing education.”

August is wolf howl season Michael Runtz Nature’s Way
August is one of my favourite months for several reasons. One is that by its end, the biting insects start disappearing. Another is that the nights are deliciously cool and the days clear and bright. And last but not least, Algonquin wolves are howling. Of course, wolves howl all year long. Howling is how wolves communicate not only to fellow pack members but also to other wolves. Howls are audible “no trespassing” signs that tell other wolves where property limits reside. Wolves howl to tell pack members their location, and to no doubt convey other information. Howling also seems to play a role in social bonding in a pack. Why is August better for hearing wolves howl? One reason is that the night air is cooler and calm, and sound carries better under those conditions. Another is that wolf packs take up residence then in “rendezvous sites.” At rendezvous sites pups are left to play and rest while adults go hunting. Pups howl a lot and do not discrimi-
nate between the howls of pack members and stray wolves or their impostors, and reply to either with equal enthusiasm. A rendezvous site (named for the reuniting of adults and pups at the site) can be used for days, weeks, or even months. In August, because wolves reply readily to human howls and rendezvous sites are in use, Algonquin Park holds Public Wolf Howls, events in which attendees are taken out to hear Eastern Wolves reply to human howls. The Wolf Howls are world famous, with more than a thousand people taking part in one event. I used to take part in the Howls when I worked in Algonquin as a summer naturalist. Since 1993 I have conducted my own Howls in Bonnechere Provincial Park and in more recent years also at Achray in eastern Algonquin. Last weekend I held Wolf Howls in both parks, and had responses from wolves on both events. Prior to the Howls I searched for wolves and had great success, locating three rendezvous sites, one situated along the shores of a remote beaver pond. After quietly sneaking
in prior to dawn and patiently waiting for an hour, I was rewarded by seeing an adult wolf stroll into view and howl. The wolf was wearing a radio transmitter, placed there by an OMNRF biologist. After a twohour wait the second day, three pups wandered into view and howled. I was silently ecstatic as my camera clicked away. Another rendezvous site was located along the shores Michael Runtz of another beaver pond. This August is an excellent month for hearing Eastern Wolves howl in Algonquin Park, espeone, however, lacked any good cially pups like these.” vantage point for observation or photography. As I first snuck stealthily through the woods toward the pond, a wolf pup wandered within three metres of me, completely unaware of my presence. Unfortunately it was too close to photograph and vegetation blocked my view as it wandered away. The memory of its oversized head peeking through the Bracken ferns so close to me is one that will never fade away. Wolves are uncommon, elusive animals and hearing them sing their wild music is always an exciting privilege. Having one approach so near you can almost touch its fur is an indescribable thrill.

EMA LEE FASHIONS CELEBRATES FOURTEEN YEARS! BREAKING NEWS HOT OFF THE PRESS Ema lee Fashions is still opened and celebrating their fourteenth year!
Kevin McSheffrey
We are not ready to retire yet and our business etiquette would be to politely announce it to our many loyal customers old and new Everyone knows that the store is located seven kilometers north of Perth on Hwy 511 in the hamlet of Downtown Balderson. What people don’t know is why Ema Lee Fashions is not your typical everyday boutique. What makes it different? It’s the people! Here are a few examples: Fourteen years ago when we first opened Mr. and Mrs. Steve Clyne came into the store. He brought his guitar, sat in the “husbands chair” and played and sang while his wife shopped. This still happens! Customers come in; looked puzzled and then I can hear them humming to the same tune that he is playing. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Clyne! The late Miner Bell told me stories about the dances that took place in our building and how the nickelodeon machine would play “Irene Goodnight” over and over again. Men come in with their wives and tell how they use to deliver to my store when it was George Myers General Store or worked here years ago making Cheese and collecting milk. Others come in and within five minutes of talking, there is some kind of connection with history of family members that used to live in this beautiful area.
Musings from the McDougall Mill Museum: businesses past
A McDougal family use to own the store and their family members from Oshawa told the story about how scarlet fever hit. They had to close the store because people were afraid to go near them. A McLaren family member from Alberta brought in framed photos and newspaper articles about their Grandmother Lillian Cameron being the first telephone operator in Balderson. A gentleman by the name of Dalton Bradley dropped off two of his wives hats to add to my vintage hat collection. She had been a nurse at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. Then one day a customer came in and asked where did you get that hat? When I explained, she said that she had been with her mother the day that she had bought it and was pleased to see it on display. She was Mr. Bradley’s daughter.
courage and strength. What an inspiration! There has also been a lot of laughter at Ema Lee Fashions especially the days when the late Mrs. Ora Paul came in. Just when I was taking life too seriously or upset when someone tried to return a bathing suit at the end of the season, Ora actually helped me keep my act together. Thanks Ora. I’ve watched children grow up and come back to shop and show me their wedding or graduation pictures. I’ve met 100-103 years old ladies full of spunk come in and buy their Birthday Party Bling. One of the told me ‘My dear it’s all in the attitude!
So we are not only celebrating fourteen years in business but celebrating the journey of meeting such wonderful, interesting caring people at Ema Lee Fashions. More Two customers from Perth than a ladies fashion store! heard that my grandson was very ill As many customers have said ‘if back in 2008. They placed his name on a prayer list across Canada and you can’t find something to wear the US. That was nine years ago. here you are not shopping. Thank you! This Labour Day weekend I have seen customers with from Thursday to Monday we are medical conditions that chose to having our fourteenth anniversary carry on and fight with dignity, celebration sale.

It was with some sense of loss that I noted the recent closing of Fraser’s, and Donohue’s businesses, as well as Imbleau’s before that. Although I’m new to town, having been here only 28 years, the business landscape has changed dramatically in that time. When I moved to Renfrew in 1989 the town had Mitel, Lockwood’s Lumber, Renfrew bottling plant, Blue Bell (producing Wrangler jeans), Playtex, Westinghouse, Bargain Harold’s/BiWay, Quinn’s fabric store, and no chain stores by the highway. The west end had a mall, although the only growth seen there now are the weeds in the parking lot. If you grew up here, you might be amazed to see all the items we have in the museum from those long-gone businesses. It’s remarkable how many of them once gave out mementoes with their names on them. In the museum you can see a 1977 Haramis restaurant pizza cutter, a Clan Lounge swizzle stick, a Wilfred’s Place matchbox, a McArthur’s Men’s Wear and Sports Shop ashtray, a Raglan’s Drug Store token worth 1 ¼ cents in merchandise with phone #139, a Douglas Moore’s soap dish, a Walford’s Druggists and Stationers 5 cent token, and a McElligott Travel Agency ashtray. In the basement is an impressive collection of bottles from the Central Creamery (Renfrew was once known as the Creamery Town), the Renfrew Dairy, the Centreside Dairy, and the Renfrew Bottling Works. Beside them stands a considerable number of massive ceramic jugs, with such names as Barr and Wright Merchants, G.A. Ellis Wines and Liquors, D. Brennan Wine and Spirit Merchants, and E.F. Kelly Wines and Spirits plus a letter from 1910 by Kelly apologizing for a mix-up in one of his orders. It seemed the old timers in Renfrew enjoyed a drink now and then. Other bottles are from Davy and Clarke Chemists and Druggists, and S and J.H. Walford. Near the bottles is a Wright Honey Co. Renfrew wooden box. Browsing through one of the many albums in the museum I came across a

It’s remarkable just how many industries and businesses the town has seen, such as manufacturing plants, woolen mills, flour mills, brick kilns, the munitions plant which apparently did a ‘booming’ business. All these companies have mementoes on display in the museum. There are Renfrew axe heads, a Renfrew Acorn Woodstove, and Renfrew Electric products. One of the most interesting items was a desk model icebox belonging to Alexander Barnett. If you’re feeling nostalgic, and want to revisit some of those old ‘haunts’ drop into the museum, open 7 days a week, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. But don’t delay. The museum closes after Labour Day. And if you have any memorabilia or items from these former businesses that you might wish to donate to the McDougall Mill Museum, feel free to bring them in!

First day of school tough for both students and parents This year my son, John, starts his first day of school in Renfrew County. The emotions are overwhelming, for sure. Any guesses if I drive behind the bus that first day? Tiffany’s Take Or how many outfits will I make him try on for the perfect first day of school photo? He has had great experiences at home-based I am confident he knows how to get his coat daycares and I am thankful for the last year he and shoes on, line up, sit in a circle and more; has been at a daycare centre. the centre experience has prepared him well.

Honestly, I don’t think he knows what is coming. He knows where his school is and every time we drive by, he says, “That’s going to be my school.” We are working together to do everything possible to prepare him, including recognizing his name (he can spell it, too) and opening the tough lunch boxes. But, you have to ask yourself: is it all really enough? Kindergarten sure has changed since I went to school; all he can remember from the orientation is that he will get to play with iPads. Please, let there be more than just iPads, right? As we remind him to listen, share and say “please” and “thank you,” I ask myself: have I equipped him with the proper tools to succeed — not only in school, but in life? He is a strong and resilient four-year-old, and it is probably more me than him who is really nervous. Lunch time
I have been very stressed about what type of lunch kit to buy and send with him, as silly as that is. I must admit, I have purchased three: one small, medium and large. I have taught him how to open each and hope they all fit in his backpack.
I’m sure he hopes he finds the Batman lunch kit and not the plain blue kit, each labelled with his first and last name, as I hope he doesn’t lose it all the first week. All I really hope is he eats a balanced meal and snacks during the day. Look around
They say all you really need to know, you learned in kindergarten: share, play fair, don’t hit, put things back where you found them, clean up your own mess, don’t take things that are not yours, say sorry when you hurt someone, the golden rule, wash your hands, flush, dance/ play/work everyday and look. They are such simple concepts that we should all embrace — not just kindergartners, but everyone going back to school and big kids, too. In today’s society, life can get so busy for adults and children alike. As students of all ages head back to school next week, remember to take time to look around and take it all in. You will always look back at your school days and remember these are the best days of your life. And kids: be kind to each other, your parents, and try not to cut your hair by yourself on picture day. Oh, wait, that is probably one of my favourite kindergarten memories.

RCI set to host street party Sept. 5 Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
Raiders, get ready to be welcomed to high school with a fun new event. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) is holding a street party from 8 to 11 a.m., to celebrate the return of students for another school year. “We chose to celebrate the starting of school and the return of our students this year. “This is the first time we have planned an event like this. “Our intention is to remove some of the anxiety that often accompanies returning to school,” said Terry Hughes, RCI principal, in an email. “School is a good thing for students, and we are throwing a party to let them know how happy we are to see them and to have school starting again.” They also received approval from town council for the closure of Bonnechere Street South, between Cross Avenue and Renfrew Avenue West. They were planning to visit their neighbours to inform them of music that will be played on outdoor speakers (at a reasonable volume, stated the memo to council) and inflatable structures on the front lawn. RCI has a total student population of around 550, and they are welcoming more than 80
Grade 7 students. Hughes said his favourite part of getting back to school is seeing the students again and meeting new ones. “The challenge for me is finding ways to meet the diverse needs of all of our students, so they can benefit from all that our school has to offer,” said Hughes. He said there have been a few minor renovations at RCI this year, as well as some new teachers and education staff hired. “The most exciting change is our new students who will be in attendance.” The Continuing Education Centre has moved into the RCI building. “That required building a separate entrance and giving up some classroom space to them. There were some renovations pertaining to that,” said Hughes. He has a few words of advice for new and returning students. “RCI offers so much to students. “Students can pursue their interests in so many ways,” said Hughes. “My advice is to join clubs or teams and get involved in school life as much as possible.” RCI is located at 184 Bonnechere St. S. in Renfrew. For more information, visit: http://rci. rcdsb.on.ca.

School starts at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Renfrew on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
St. Joe’s welcomes students for new year Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
Jaguar pride is sure to be on display for the start of the 2017-18 school year. St. Joseph’s Catholic High School principal Brennan Trainor says he is always excited for the start of school. “It’s a time for starting over, to turn over a new leaf,” said Trainor. “For others it is a continuation to make their way to a place after school.” Each year SJHS starts things out with an assembly with a liturgy of the word, where Trainor addresses all grades and gives them a challenge based on a gospel message. “One of the things for them to recognize is all of us are made in the image of Christ and that all of us would like to be treated with kindness, caring, inclusiveness and the golden rule — treat others how you would like to be treated,” said Trainor. “It allows students to be unique individuals
and celebrate who they are.” This year they’ll welcome 79 Grade 8 students and the returning students with an orientation barbecue on Aug. 31. In total, SJHS has 550 students from Grade 8 to 12. With the increasing enrolment, they have added two more portables and have expanded some of their courses, such as foods/hospitality and digital/media arts. Also new this year is a change in their charity of choice. For the last two years they have raised more than $25,000 for Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Starting this fall they will raise money for Hospice Renfrew. “It makes it very organized and defined as to where the funds go and what we are raising money for,” said Trainor. “We will also have someone from Hospice come and share with the students.” The school is located at 835 First St. in Renfrew. FCS launches new five-year strategic plan At the recent annual general meeting, Family and Children´s Services of Renfrew County (FCSRC) unveiled its new strategic plan that will direct the efforts of the agency over the next five years. The action plan for 2017-2022 will focus on developing collaborative partnerships with community agencies to increase the availability and accessibility to quality care for children, youth and their families. As a multi-service agency, FCSRC will also continue advancing its preventive and early intervention focused model that it introduced over the previous five years. The executive director of FCSRC, Arijana Haramincic, described the new strategic plan as a “navigation map” that graphically depicted the plan’s three strategic directions: caring community, caring services, and caring culture. The first strategic direction — caring community — will take advantage of synergies that will be developed through strengthening partnerships and optimizing communications with other agencies and organizations that also work for the well-being of families in the county. “For example, we have successfully implemented this type of collaborative work with many organizations throughout Renfrew County.”, said Haramincic. “The idea is to keep looking for different ways to increase availability, accessibility and quality of care so nobody is left behind.” The second strategic direction — caring services — directly relates to the multiple services the agency provides to the community. The executive director explained, “Our goal is to enhance the existing proactive, collaborative and flexible service delivery model that promotes early health and crisis prevention. “The basic idea is to keep innovating by creating new programs dictated by community needs. Our main goal is to help families be the best they can by empowering young parents to develop their skills. Where intervention is necessary, we want to promote healing and create stability for the kids in our care”, said Haramincic. Finally, within the third strategic direction — caring culture — the agency will strive to become an employerof-choice by cultivating a team-orientated work environment that values the achievements of all employees. The strategic plan unveiling was preceded by a business meeting during which the agency tabled and the membership approved the 2016-2017 annual report. David Studham, vice-chair of the board of directors and chair of the AGM, said that the agency’s 2016-17 fiscal year ended on a positive note with a significant financial surplus that will be used to fund more innovative programs and services. “Everyone did an excellent job in carrying out the mission of the agency and the board wants to thank and congratulate them on a job well done”, said Studham. “Over the past five years, significant progress was made in achieving the agency’s strategic goals. Among these achievements was the development of a supervision model, the upgrade and enhancement of current facilities and the construction of a new office in the Town of Renfrew. In addition, a disaster recovery plan was developed, a staff succession plan was approved and staff training opportunities were enhanced.” The highlight of the evening — and a vivid example of the agency fulfilling its mission — was the awarding of three Millennium Scholarships of $5,000 each to three deserving youth in care. The scholarships will enable these youth to continue their education beyond high school at a college, university or technical school of their choice. RenfRew County CatholiC DistRiCt sChool BoaRD NOTICE OF INTENTION TO PASS A BY-LAW TO DESIGNATE 249 RAGLAN STREET SOUTH TO BE OF CULTURAL HERITAGE VALUE AND INTEREST PURSUANT TO THE PROVISIONS OF SECTION 29, PART IV OF THE ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT (R.S.O. 1990, Chapter O.18) TAKE NOTICE that the Council of The Corporation of the Town of Renfrew intends to pass a bylaw under Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, Chapter 0.18, to designate the lands at 249 Raglan Street South (Lot 15 &16, Plan 3, Town of Renfrew ) as having cultural heritage value or interest. The property located at 249 Raglan Street South (Lot 15 &16, Plan 3, Town of Renfrew ), also known as the Renfrew Post Office, has cultural heritage value or interest. The property is located midblock on the east side of Raglan Street South between Renfrew Avenue East and Prince Avenue East. It has physical/design value because it is a representative example of the Romanesque Rival Post Offices constructed by the Federal Office of Public Works under Chief Architect David Ewart. It is unique in its use of stone as a cladding material. The 1956 addition, using the language of the International Moderne Style, is both sympathetic and secondary to the 1908 original structure in terms of its massing and the use of materials on its façade. The property has historical/associative value because it has direct associations with people and institution that are significant to the community. This includes: the Federal Office of Public Works under Chief Architect David Ewart, with Aaron Abel Wright, the Customs Service, and the Post Office (which has been a continuous tenant since the building’s opening in 1908). The property, notably the Post Office Building proper, demonstrates or reflects the work of several key architects and builders including: The Department of Public Works under Chief Architect David Ewart; Joseph Bourgue and Co. from Hull Quebec; architect John McNichol of Renfrew; M. Sullivan and Son Ltd of Arnprior; and Belcour and Blair Architects (supported by J. Klassen Consulting Engineer and Raymond C. Gaulther). The property has contextual value because the Renfrew Post Office Building is important in defining and maintaining the streetscape character of Raglan Street South. It is linked physically to Renfrew’s historic main street (Raglan Street South), it is visually a key part of the streetscape, and is historically linked to its surroundings. Its site was specifically chosen to serve as a terminal vista at the end of Renfrew Avenue West. It is also a community landmark. Additional information, including a full description of the statement of cultural heritage value or interest and heritage attributes is available upon request from the Town Clerk during regular business hours. Any notice of objection, setting out the reason for objection and all relevant facts, must be served upon the Town Clerk within 30 days of the first publication of this Notice. Thunderstorms, lightning, torrential downpours, threats of tornados; nothing prevents the Renfrew Bridge Club members showing up for their Wednesday afternoon game. Aug. 23 saw the number of players increase to 14-and-a-half tables. Considering the way the club is growing, it’s indeed fortunate that they’re located in a spacious room at Ma-Te-Way. As usual, there were some boards of interest. While the cards on Board 15 were passed out without play on five occasions, one intrepid North-South pair managed to eke a successful four-club contract, well-judged and played by Ruth Grant and Mary McCann. Though Board 18 saw all the North-South pairs make 12 or 13 tricks, only four adventuresome pairs shrewdly bid the slam contract. However, in typical Renfrew style, there was still great variety of thought, as the successful pairs demonstrated that a slam could be made in clubs, diamonds or no trump. Congratulations to the Aug. 23 winners: North – South: 1: Irene Churchill - Sheila Perras 2: Arthur Ham - Phyllis Brennan 3: Dennis Brehm - Doug Gonu East – West: 1: Sandy Towner - Ian Towner 2: Bob Bouchard - Garry Irving 3: George Caldwell - Suzanne Caldwell

Gas iron made Mother hot under the collar It wasn’t like every other Saturday morning. Mother had loaded the Model T the night before for all her door-todoor deliveries in Renfrew that she did every week. But that Saturday was different. Mrs. Stewart, (we called her the ‘rich Mrs. Stewart’) had also ordered two dozen of Mother’s sticky buns with her usual order of eggs, butter and one fat chicken. That meant I would have to help Mother take the order to the kitchen door, and I’d get another peek into the kitchen, which was almost as big as our whole house! Mother rapped gently, and the door was opened by Mrs. Stewart herself, and I could see she was ironing. But it wasn’t like our ironing board on the farm that she was using. This board had its own legs, not like ours, which was really only a rough board, wrapped in flannelette sheets, and when used was put on the backs of two chairs. And the irons had to be heated on the hot elements of our cook stove before you could use them. But Mrs. Stewart’s iron sure was different. It had a bulb affair at one end, and what looked like a pipe going upwards. “This is a brand new type of iron, Mrs. Haneman,” Mrs. Stewart said when she saw us looking at it. “It heats with gas.” She looked as proud as punch, as if she had just discovered gold! “And it heats very quickly ... far quicker than the electric plugin I can tell you.” She propped it on its end, and I could hear it sizzle, and steam came out onto the damp and starched doily she was ironing. Mrs. Stewart made some comment that Mother should have a gas iron, since she was pretty sure we had no electricity on the farm, and it would sure beat heating the flat irons on the cook stove. Mother already had her money in her purse, her hand on the doorknob, and was push-

I dared to ask her what all the fuss was about. “Did you see that iron? “Well, let me tell you about a gas iron my friend Rosy had in her New York apartment. It looked just like that one too.” Mother was breathing hard, as if the memory was causing her pain. “The first time Rosy used it, she called me in from next door to see this new invention. “Well! It hissed, it sputtered, and the blue smoke came out of it, and then there was this big puff. “It hit the ceiling, taking Rosie’s husband’s best white shirt with it, and there was a hole in the ceiling as big as a pumpkin.” Mother took a hanky out of her purse and wiped her forehead. The memory almost too much for her. “No thank you. I’ll stick with the flat irons I heat on the cook stove until we get electricity.” And I knew that wasn’t going to happen any time soon. Great conditions: RGC Kevin Sebulski General manager, Renfrew Golf Club
Thank you to everyone who has played Renfrew Golf Club (RGC) recently and for the great comments about our golf course conditions. Our golf course team, led by superintendent Dave Wilson, has been working non-stop to maintain this fantastic golf course. As we’ve said many times, RGC can take all the rain Mother Nature can throw at us. We’re sand-based and all of our elevation changes ensure water runs off our golf course. If you haven’t played RGC yet this season, you’re missing something special. Both our ladies and men’s rec leagues are midway through their two-week block so we’ll have results next week. A reminder, ladies rec closing day is Sunday Sept. 24 and men’s rec closing day is Saturday Sept. 30. Unfortunately our ladies day on Aug. 22 was rained out so we have no results to report. But, we did get in our men’s day on Thursday and to switch it up, we’ll start with super senior and end with A flight. In super senior, Don Eady showed he’s getting ready for the RBC PGA Scramble Regional Finals on Sept. 5 by winning the week with 22.5 points. Dave Cummings was second with 21 and Brian Francis was third with 20.5. In C flight, Harry Luth had the high score of the week with 24 points with both Paul Papousek and Brad Sammon tying for second. In B Flight, the ol’ wiley vet Fergus Wrinn was able to hold off Keith Brydges by a point with Chris Graham third. And finally in A Flight, Rob Warren continued his winning ways, winning the day by four points over Kip Mulvihill and by five over Hessel Vandervelde. Just a reminder RGC is proud to once again host the 24th annual Laurel Rafuse Memorial Golf Tournament on Sunday Sept. 17. Laurel had a passion for working with children and youth with disabilities and was devoted to organizations such as the Children’s Outreach Summer School and Camp, where she worked with children, and to Community Living Renfrew County South which supports camp programs for children and youth. Marilyn and Ned Rafuse established the Laurel Rafuse Memorial Golf Tournament so that the summer camp program for children and youth with disabilities could flourish in her honour. Over the last 23 years, the Laurel Rafuse Memorial Golf Tournament has raised over $200,000 and has been able to expand from summer camp to also include a March break camp. For information on this year’s tournament, please contact Ann or Jennifer at Community Living at 613-432-6763. Finally, our 2018 membership rates are now online. The Central Canada Hockey Tier 2 League is skating into the new year with a number of pre-season games. On Aug. 24 the Arnprior Packers fell to the Ottawa West Golden Knights 5-3 on the road. On Aug. 27 the Packers easily defeated the Knights 7-1 at home. On Aug. 26 the Renfrew Timberwolves defeated the Richmond Royals 2-1 at home and the next day the Wolves lost to the Royals 6-3 in Beckwith. Coming up this week the Packers are on the road as they visit the Carleton Place Jr. Canadians on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Also on Sept. 1 the Whitewater Kings travel to Renfrew to face the Wolves Friday night at 8 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 3 the Kings and the Wolves face off in Pembroke at 7 p.m. and the Packers are back in Carleton Place for a 2 p.m. rematch.

Dragonfly hosts Ottawa Sun Scramble Bill Rainboth General manager, Dragonfly Golf Links
League play resumed on Monday night with Enright Tree Service “chopping down” the field — sawing off the Bunker Busters and Riopelle Painting by one shot. Closest to the pin winners were Colin Schwartz on No. 13, and Mike Riopelle on No. 18. Tuesday was a violent day for weather. During the day Dragonfly was hosting the first round of the Ottawa Sun Scramble, Absolute Comedy division. Despite being called off the course twice due to thunderstorms and heavy downpours, 112 golfers from around the Ottawa area managed to complete their rounds. The conclusion of this event led into the beginning of Tuesday night men’s league. Some teams took the night off for fear of getting wet feet. Those who played were “shocked into submission ” by the team from Valley Automation and Controls, who were crowned the overall winners. Doug Pilgrim was closest to the pin on
No. 5, and Dustin Zohr was closest on No. 7. A full field returned for play on Wednesday night where Mackenzie Motors drove through the A flight teams, and Valley Ventilation blew away the B flight teams with the lowest net score of the week. Closest to the pin winners were Tim Lemoyre on No. 13, and Alex Holmes was closest on No. 18. On Thursday, cooler temperatures could not chill some great golf from our ladies league. Sharp shooters on this night were Gail Keyes and Megan Lewis who were both closest to the pin. We Be Clubbin “thumped” their way to win A flight. Team Seriously (?) were dead serious about winning B flight, and the Tee Time Girls won the tie breaker with the Garden Lake Loonies to win C flight. Hard to believe that by the time you read this article we will almost be through August. School will start the next week, and the Renfrew Fair is the week after that. The year 2017 will be remembered by many as the year we never really had a summer. Here’s hoping for a long, and warm fall golf season!

horoscopes
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

It’s the greatest time of the year: president Bob McMullin Renfrew Fair president
I have always said that the greatest time of the year is fair time. Renfrew Fair is known as “The Greatest Fair In The Ottawa Valley.” 2017 is shaping up to be no different with five days packed full of awesome things to see and do. I wouldn’t want to miss it if I were you. I am very excited for our entertainment lineup, which will feature some of the best talent around. We would like to welcome back Carter Shows Ltd. as our midway provider and they promise to bring the best rides for all
ages. This year we will look forward to some of the best livestock in North America exhibiting at our fair. I encourage everyone to stop by the Exhibit Hall to visit our Homecraft Division and see all the wonderful displays. Plus come check out our maple syrup division — the best in the Ottawa Valley. Don’t forget to stop by the Barnet Barn if you are looking to see many different animals all in one spot. I would like to say a special thanks to all of our sponsors and donors that support the Renfrew Fair. On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to welcome you to the 163rd Renfrew Fair.
Something for everyone at 2017 Renfrew Fair Teresa McCarroll Renfrew Fair Homecraft president
This year marks our 163rd fair and the celebration of Canada’s 150th, and on behalf of the homecraft division, I would like to welcome you. Our fair finishes, then our directors start reviewing and updating the various categories for you to exhibit in the next year. A special thank you to all our directors and volunteers for the many hours they give to the fair; their time is much appreciated. Our fair would not be possible without all our volunteers.
Each year, we proudly display the work of all our exhibitors with their skills in quilting, floriculture, baking, hobbies, crafts, photography, woodworking, art, bottled goods, junior fair, school work, 4-H and agricultural products. We would like to thank returning exhibitors and look forward to new ones. Take some time to read through the prize book, check out for anything new. There is something for everyone. Come on out, meet up with friends and neighbours, and enjoy one of the finest fairs in the valley.

163 RenfRew faiR Rainwater Whiskey hits the stage Sept. 8 rd
“The Greatest fair in The Ottawa Valley” September 6th - 10th
Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
It’s a homecoming for two members of Rainwater Whiskey at the Renfrew Fair Friday, Sept. 8 on the grandstand stage at 8 p.m. Lead singer Thomas Watson and bass player Robert Pallen both hail from Renfrew. Watson was born and raised in Renfrew. He went to Admaston Public School, Renfrew Collegiate Institute and played hockey for the Jr. B Renfrew Timberwolves. He is quite looking forward to performing at the Renfrew Fair. “You always had to go to the Renfrew Fair,” said Watson. “It was a good time and a place to meet up with friends.” He says one of his favourite memories of the fair was when he played with his former band Make Shift. “We got to play the fair and that was pretty cool and now I get to do it again,” said Watson. The band is rounded out by Kent Clingin on drums from Lanark and Mark Bolton from Constance Bay on guitar. “We are all valley boys!” said Watson. The band is no stranger to Renfrew as they have played Coco Jarry’s and Finnigan’s. “It will be cool to play some originals at home,” said Watson. Rainwater Whiskey is described as “a hardhitting country band from the Ottawa Valley. The boys have been stomping all over local bars
in the Ottawa and Valley area since 2013 putting a little whiskey on all your favourite old and modern country tunes.” “We are country with a rock and roll edge,” said Watson. He is really excited to be playing at the Renfrew Fair. “It’s going to be awesome. We are really good friends with River Town Saints (who we are opening for) and I want to show them how we get down in Renfrew,” said Watson. “I hope a lot of friends and family come out too, I hope they come out in droves.” Rainwater Whiskey has been performing in the Ottawa Valley for four years and have just released their first EP The Long Time Coming recorded at Audio Valley Studios and produced by Steve Foley, with original music. “We’ve had the songs for awhile,” said Watson. “It’s pretty amazing that we did it after talking about it for so long.” By the end of the summer they will have performed in front of 10,000 people as they have opened for Kira Isabella, Aaron Pritchett, Brett Kissel, and at the fair The River Town Saints, where they have featured a number of new songs. He hopes the first single will be Read that Wrong. “It’s a song about getting too drunk and putting yourself in situations that you read wrong,” said Watson. On Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. ‘Whiskey Jack Presents Stories and Songs of Stompin’ Tom’ hits the stage at the Renfrew Fair.
‘Whiskey Jack Presents Stories and Songs of Stompin’ Tom’ Sept. 7 Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
Stompin’ Tom was a Canadian icon whose music continues to live on today after his death in 2014 and will be showcased at the Renfrew Fair. On Thursday, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m., see ‘Whiskey Jack Presents Stories and Songs of Stompin’ Tom’ at the Renfrew Fair on the grandstand stage. The show was started shortly after the well-known Canadian passed away as Whiskey Jack performed with Stompin’ Tom for close to 20 years. “Tom taught me how to entertain,” said bandleader Duncan Fremlin. “I like to think the show we bring to Renfrew has many of the same ingredients as a Stompin’ Tom. It’s playful and it’s upbeat.” He also notes the show is funny and interactive. “There are a lot of laughs because Tom was a jokester, a trickster,” said Fremlin. “For the song Name The Capitals (of the provinces) I go out with the mic and encourage the audience to name the capitals, it sounds easy but it’s not! It’s all great fun!” Stompin’ Tom has many popular songs focusing in on unique aspects of Canadian culture; one of the most famous for the Ottawa Valley is Big Joe Mufferaw. “We go to the Ottawa Valley and of course we will play that song,” said Fremlin. “He spent a lot of time in the Ottawa Valley there as a young man and there was something special about it for him.” The songs are also special for those
who hear Whiskey Jack. “Last year in Carleton Place, a woman got very emotional after the show and she had tears in her eyes because we were keeping his music alive,” recalled Fremlin. During the show, they have audio clips of Stompin’ Tom and he will introduce some of the songs. “People will hear from him during the show and his love of Canada,” said Fremlin. According to the band’s biography, Whiskey Jack has been together since 1977 and have been quite successful, releasing a number of albums and having a five-year run as regulars on CBC-TV’s Tommy Hunter Show. “Vocally, we are probably the best version of Whiskey Jack with five fantastic lead vocalists,” said Fremlin. They were also featured often on TV specials and CTV’s Alan Thicke Show. In the 1980s, they were often described as the most televised Canadian country music band in the country. “The fans at the fair will enjoy a mix of Connors’ greatest hits, stories and audio recordings of him during performances. It will also be unique to the communities in and around Renfrew,” said Fremlin in the release. “Tom’s own voice will be heard throughout the show and the band guarantees that it will put a smile on your face.” For more on Whiskey Jack, visit www.whiskeyjackmusic.com and catch them at the Renfrew Fair on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m.

Lighthouse brings explosive sound to Renfrew Fair Sept. 9 Sherry Haaima sherry.haaima@metroland.com
If you’d like to enjoy Sunny Days at the Renfrew Fair, No More Searching, 1970s rockers Lighthouse have the Saturday night performance just for you. “Anyone who shows up will have a unique experience,” said keyboardist Paul Hoffert. “It’s different every single night. That’s what keeps it fresh for us and the many fans who come from gig to gig.” Toronto-based Lighthouse burst on the scene in 1969, with an explosive sound that defied all conventions. The band has a long history of accomplishments — between 1970 and 1973 they were awarded four Junos, four gold albums and Canada’s first platinum album for Lighthouse Live! With hits including One Fine Morning, Sunny Days, Hats Off to the Stranger, 1849 and Pretty Lady, the

lot for ourselves, we’re really into music at this stage in our careers,” said Hoffert. “We just love getting together and playing music. It’s all live, there are no gimmicks, no pitch tools. We’ve got a lot of energy.”

The members have been working at it a long time, he said. “When we put the band together we wanted a group with the best players in the world — and we’ve kept that up,” said Hoffert.

He said band members are pleased to be encountering not only audiences that remember Lighthouse from the old days but “a new crop of younger people who know all the words to our songs.” Modern-day Lighthouse features original founders Hoffert and Ralph Cole leading an all-star lineup that includes original members Russ Little and Steve Kennedy with Dan Clancy, Doug Moore, Don Paulton, Chris Howells, Simon Wallis and Jamie Prokop. In September, Lighthouse will have their first new recording in quite awhile, said Hoffert, a nod to Canada’s sesquicentennial. “We’re part of a Canada 150 record compilation featuring our country’s 150 most important tracks ever released,” he said. “We’re humbled and very thankful that of all the fantastic bands on the record from Justin Bieber to Neil Young, etc., Lighthouse is the only one that has two songs.” Sunny Days is among the songs, as well as a new recording produced by famed producer Bob Ezrin, a new arrangement of Leonard Cohen’s Tower of Song. The album is expected to be released in September. Hoffert, who has travelled and performed around the world with Lighthouse, reflected on what Canada means to him. “I remember that when we first got started we played a lot of rock festivals all over the world,” he said. “We were playing in Atlantic City and were the first band on the third day of a big festival and we got on stage and because we had so much equipment we played a big chord and blew out the entire outdoor sound system.” With some 50,000 people in the crowd and the knowledge that recent similar concert situations had turned tragic — the mood was tense. “We couldn’t talk to the whole crowd and it started to look like it might get ugly, so we started talking to the first 10 rows or so of people, saying ‘Look, we’re from Canada, where things are a little more peaceful, the sound guys are working hard to get this issue resolved, everybody just have a good time, chill out, turn to whoever is next to you and see if we can start something positive,’” said Hoffert. Then, something pretty cool happened, he said. “A Canada flag came out and was waving, you could see the ripple effect. Kids just started chilling out and dancing around. Everyone started calming down,” he said. “I’ll never forget that, it was such a Canadian moment and made me feel so proud.” Lighthouse takes to the stage at the Renfrew Fair at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9.

River Town Saints Friday night headliner at 163rd Renfrew Fair Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
The River Town Saints (RTS), one of the top bands in Canadian country music, is set to rock the stage at the Renfrew Fair on Friday, Sept. 8. The band recently released their first album and their first single Woke Up Like This has been climbing the charts this summer. Other big hits include: A Little Bit Goes A Long Way, Cherry Bomb and Bonfire, which went top 10 at country radio. Lead singer for the band Chris Labelle has never been to the Renfrew Fair but has heard nothing but good things about it. “The show will be high energy and we like to show off the harmonies too, everyone will get to hear the songs from the album and a few covers/

The River Town Saints are hitting the stage at the Renfrew Fair on Sept. 8. The popular country band is comprised of Jeremy Bortot, Jordan Potvin, Chris Labelle, Chris McComb and Daniel DiGiacomo. medleys,” said Labelle. “I am super pumped because it is so close to my home and I can bring my family and friends out. I can’t wait, I’m from Ottawa but I am always in Renfrew and I know the area loves country music
and we will bring it!” RTS has had a busy summer touring with a bunch of big names Labelle says his favourite memory this year was when they performed with Kip Moore in Western Canada.
“We learned so much from him, how to be professional and save out voice,” said Labelle. “If we can take 10 per cent of what he gives on stage Renfrew will be blown away for sure.” The crowd is also in for some new music the band is working on. “We will be playing a couple of new original songs for the fans and the audience will help us decide what the next single is just by looking at their reactions.” Two of the members of the band are from the Ottawa Valley and are really looking forward to playing in their own backyard. River Town Saints singer-guitarists Chris McComb, from Arnprior, has a lot of memories of the fair. “My grandfather used to take me to the Renfrew Fair. There was a merrygo-round with motorcycles and he kept giving me tokens,” McComb
told Metroland Media when the entertainment lineup was announced. McComb is really looking forward to playing the fair. “We get to play in front of a hometown crowd. It’s cool but more nerve racking because there will be more people I know,” said McComb. “Fall fairs always feel homey to me too, the smell of the food, the lights of the rides, it feels natural.” Drummer Jordan Potvin lives in Arnprior and is excited to play the Renfrew Fair. “It’s such a rare moment for us to play close to home. I mean we have a good amount of friends and family out this way, and they’re always checking in to see how the band is doing,” Potvin recently told Metroland Media. “So now instead of just talking about it, they can come to see how much we’ve developed as a band and what the show is like now. It’s going to be an awesome fair this year!”
