Students returned to school this week and motorists should be on the lookout for school buses and students. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind everyone that school buses are back in service. Every driver meeting or approaching a stopped schoolbus with lights flashing from the rear must stop before reaching the bus and must not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signallights have stopped flashing, say OPP. Many children walk and bike to school and motorists should also be aware of the increased pedestrian traffic, as well, say police.

County proposes less ambulance service to city DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
GRAND
Ambulances could be in Arnprior and other Renfrew County communities ready to respond to emergencies more often if the province agrees to a new model. Right now paramedics respond to about 300 calls per year within the City of Ottawa limits. That’s because provincial rules say the nearest ambulance must respond. If the ambulance responsible for West Carleton is dropping a patient off at The Ottawa Hospital, Arnprior’s will have to respond to Carp or Dunrobin or elsewhere. That leaves Arnprior with no local service for what could be a long time, if it is held up at a city hospital. An ambulance from Renfrew or elsewhere then becomes responsible for Arnprior. It has long been a thorny issue for wardens and local politicians in the county. Last year alone the county did 370 calls in Ottawa, according to Chief Paramedic Michael Nolan. However, Nolan has proposed to the county’s health committee that ambulances only respond to unconscious or cardiac arrest patients. There were 15 of those cases last year.

Janice Visneskie Moore, mayor of the Township of Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards, is chairwoman of the county’s health committee. She is confident both the committee and council as a whole will vote in favour of Nolan’s proposal. “This is to the benefit of the people of Renfrew county. That is who we serve,” Visneskie Moore said. “We don’t mind being the good neighbour and all that, but we are responsible to the people of Renfrew county.” She is “hoping” the provincial government will approve the new arrangement, which is also being proposed by other municipalities bordering Ottawa. “We are hoping that once they see it that they will view it as a new door to solve this problem,” she said. She hasn’t spoken to Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MPP John Yakabuski on the matter. Asked about the financial savings, Visneskie Moore was less sure. It would be good for county taxpayers, but the main point is residents have service. “There’s huge monetary value, but also we’ll be able to provide a better service.” Nolan’s original hope was to have the new plan in place by Sept. 1. He is now aiming for Oct. 1.

The fair is finally here! The 163rd annual Renfrew Fair officially opens on Sept. 6 and goes until Sept. 10. General manager of the The Renfrew Agricultural Society/Fair Judy Dobec encourages everyone to come and check out what is billed as ‘The greatest fair in the Ottawa Valley since 1853.’ “We are getting very excited and hope the weather holds out with five days of sunshine,” said Dobec. “The board of directors has been working very hard and we will be ready.” New this year to tie in with Canada 150 celebrations is an antique car/farm display beside the Barnet Education Centre on both Saturday and Sunday. “It’s a chance to see what kind of equipment our forefathers used,” said Dobec. Also this year they have moved the local entertainment in front of the grandstand. “We just like to showcase the talent we have in the valley,” said Dobec. “We have amazing talent in the valley and we wanted to showcase them on the main stage.” Local entertainment on Saturday includes: The Heartbeats at 1 p.m., and Gerry Papousek from 3 to 4 p.m. And on Sunday: Scott Judd at noon, Classic Roots Trio at 1 p.m., Mark Audet at 2 p.m., at 3 p.m. Heritage Hillbilly Orchestra with Mike Clouthier and Joanne Dubeau and at 4 p.m. Kyle Felhaver. The Red Stage will feature several Little Rays Reptile Shows. Carter Shows Ltd. is back again with its midway featuring 24 rides. “New this year is a bingo tent. We’ve had requests from fairgoers, they wanted a bingo so Carter Shows is bringing it in,” said Dobec. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday there are a number of horse shows and 4-H events as well. “We are proud to have kept the agriculture component,” said Dobec. “We have outstanding horse and cattle shows, which people should watch.” Grandstand entertainment includes: Whiskey Jack Presents Stories and Songs of Stompin’ Tom on Thursday, Sept. 7, on Friday night is: Rainwater Whisky & River Town Saints and on Saturday, Sept. 8 is Lighthouse. Renfrew fire chief to help with Township of Whitewater Region TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It’s the neighbourly way. Renfrew Fire Chief Guy Longtin will be providing the services of an acting fire chief for the Township of Whitewater Region for approximately three to five months. “It’s good that we can help our neighbours this way,” said Longtin on Aug. 28. “The future of a regional fire service needs to be looked at and I am

a strong advocate of a borderless fire service.” Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon says that there is no initiative at the County of Renfrew level to consolidate fire services, as it is a municipal responsibility, but agrees this is a good partnership. “I think it’s a good thing when one township needs assistance and there will be compensation,” said Emon. “The chief as our administrative model does not necessary have to be the incident commander.”
As to the time away from Renfrew, he is confident his staff will be able to handle the duties. “It’s going to take some of my time from here. With the staff I have, the captains can well look after Renfrew if I am out of town,” said Longtin. The motion was approved during the regular Renfrew council meeting on Aug. 22 and confirmed by the Township of Whitewater the following night. Under the agreement, Longtin will provide a minimum of 30 hours a
month to Whitewater Region and they will pay the Town of Renfrew $3,000 a month, which includes an administration fee. The report provided to council stated the fire chief and the deputy fire chief for the township of Whitewater Region resigned their respective positions in July and they were left with no management at the top end. The Fire Protection and Prevention Act specifies that a municipality with a fire department must have a fire chief.
Lindsay family donates property Town looks to preserve old post office TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The Town of Renfrew is thankful to the Lindsay family for a donation of land on the Bonnechere River. At the Aug. 22 council meeting, the town passed a motion to receive a land donation at 345 Arthur Ave. (1.3 acres) for a charitable receipt. “This is a very, very good piece of land for the Town of Renfrew to receive. It joins one of our properties, thank you very much,” said Mayor Don Eady to family members who were in attendance at the meeting. According to the report, the town is very appreciative of the offer by Mr. Allan Lindsay and family as it will provide opportunities for additional community enjoyment of this area
of the Bonnechere River. “It’s a very generous donation and a beautiful way to keep their memory alive,” said Reeve Peter Emon. “The property will remain in the public domain, thank you.” The report on the donation says the town and family have agreed to a land value of $28,279, which will be reflected in a tax receipt issued by the town. The town was notified about the proposed donation of the vacant piece of land in late 2016. In the spring of 2016, the 1960s bungalow was flooded beyond repair. The report states a professional evaluation has determined that the highest and best use now is as vacant park land or a lot addition to the adjoining properties. Council discussed the land acquisition during a closed session of council on July 18.

It is one of the most iconic landmarks in Renfrew. The Town of Renfrew has posted a notice of intention to pass a bylaw to designate the old post office at 249 Raglan St. S. to be of cultural heritage value and interest under the Ontario Heritage Act. On Aug. 22, the town received a cultural evaluation on the building, which clerk Kim Bulmer said was the last key component to allow them to proceed in the designation. “I would like to congratulate staff,” said Mayor Don Eady. “This building is the centre point of our town and it is surprising it hasn’t been designated before — now, it will look the same forever.”

Some of the features identified in the report prepared by Letourneau Heritage Consulting Inc. are the 1923 clock tower with its weather vane, the mansard roof, front entrance steps, stone chimney, 1908 date stone, and the metal coat of arms/ façade of the 1956 International Modern-style addition. “This will protect the features that are identified in the report,” said Bulmer. “Those are the features that would be protected from any future changes [which] would need to be discussed with the town.” Council agreed to move forward and on Aug. 31 the notice was posted. There is now a 30-day period in case anyone wants to object to it. At its March 14 meeting, the Town of Renfrew declared the building to be surplus and a real estate company has been hired to put it up for sale.

OPINION
Connected to your community
Coverage fair, despite opposition When tragedy strikes, everyone has a job to do. We have the utmost respect for emergency officials and frequently see firsthand how critical their measured, valiant and often-heroic service is to the community. This newspaper faced considerable criticism for its online coverage of a recent fatal crash on White Lake Road. Readers were concerned our description of the scene, which included the colour and make of the vehicle, would identify the victim to her family before police could deliver the awful news. Ethics is top of mind when we are called out to cover such incidents. In this case, the photo we chose to run was taken from a distance and neither the vehicle nor the licence plate were in sharp focus. The details describing the collision were provided by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The photograph and story appeared online at least four hours from the time of the incident. The way we covered this tragedy and posted the news to our website was no different than what we’ve done in the past.Motor vehicle collisions, especially those involving fatalities, are the assignments reporters dread most. Critics pointed to a recent OPP memo that asked “drivers” to refrain from posting collision
photographs from the scene. This was a directive to the public and not trained, professional journalists. And while learning the make and model of the car via an online news post would certainly be frightening for those knowing someone driving that particular type and colour of car in that specific area – there is a much larger percentage of the public whose fears were perhaps allayed learning it was not their loved one involved. We appreciate that not all decisions we make will sit well with our readers but in the end, we are in the news business and our job is to inform the public of the good and the bad, in as timely a manner as possible. Photographing motor vehicle collisions are part of a journalist’s job and top of mind for us is the balance between respecting an individual’s privacy and the public’s right to know. These photos can be a valuable information tool – alerting readers to a particularly dangerous spot, reminding them of the dangers of speeding, impaired or distracted driving and/or highlighting the difficult job of emergency personnel. The debate whether or not to post these stories and when is a constant in our newsrooms and not taken lightly, especially in this new age of social media. That debate continues to evolve.
Thanks to all who helped during spring flooding: mayor To the editor:
On Aug. 19, Horton township hosted a volunteer appreciation dinner at the Horton Community Rink and provided a free dinner and raffles to the residents of Horton Township and welcomed volunteers that came from other areas to join in. The mayor read the following letter at the event: I want to say thank you to some people who were instrumental in helping us during the crisis. I want to start with all the residents who were affected by the flood. I want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we were trying to get organized and put our emergency plan into action. I know it was a very stressful time for all of you. Thank you for your patience. I want to thank our staff directed by our very capable chief administrative officer/ clerk Sue Klatt. We were very fortu-

nate to have her experience to guide us through this unfortunate time. Special thanks to the public works department, fire department as well as our treasurer and office staff who worked long hours trying to help in whatever capacity they could. You all did a fantastic job. Well done and much appreciated by everyone. I want to thank all the volunteers and believe me there are too many to name but you know who you are from the people filling the sand bags, the contractor delivering the sand, the ones who used their own vehicles to deliver them and help install them, also the ones who went door to door checking on neighbours and all the organizations and residents that donated food; a huge thank you. I want to thank Steve Osipenko and all his staff for the planning and ex-
ecution of the emergency plan and all the follow up, we were indeed fortunate to have them at the helm. I also want to thank Renfrew Mayor Don Eady of Renfrew for the help they gave us. Don called and asked me what they could do to help and I replied send people to help fill bags and sure enough a short time later they arrived. I want to thank Mayor Tom Peckett of McNab/Braeside who also called and offered help for whatever we needed. Also I want to say thank you to Renfrew County Warden Jen Murphy who took time out of her busy schedule to come and see how we were doing. Last but not least I want to thank Steve Seller from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing for the advice and direction he gave us, which helped us in making some of our deci-

Town should Red Cross swimming tests held at the beach in 1969 be more accessible HERITAGE RENFREW
To the editor:
Hi, my name is Amanda Curry I have lived in Renfrew for 33 years and I have seen a lot of good changes and a lot of bad changes but today I am writing you this letter because I think we need to come together and have a meeting. I am writing this letter because I think there needs to be changes. I think we need to talk about how to make this town a better place for people with disabilities. I think we need to redo all the sidewalks all over town because they are cracked and not wheelchair or walker-friendly. I think every business in town should be wheelchair accessible because it is not easy trying to open doors or being independent when you need to be getting in and out of places. I think we need to come up with ideas and work together to make change in our town. Amanda Curry Renfrew
The tests were held for junior, intermediate and senior classes, all who have been taking lessons in preparation for the examinations. The generating station at Chenaux will let out above normal amounts of water, causing a potential danger to those using the Ottawa.
Beware higher, faster levels on the Ottawa River: OPG Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is advising users of the Ottawa River, downstream of Chenaux Generating Station, that water will be spilled through the sluicegate spillway from Sept. 11 until Oct. 6. This will be done to assist with
work happening at both the station and the neighbouring switchyard, say officials. River users may experience faster and higher than normal conditions and should be cautious during this time.
OPG would like to remind all users of the river to take every precaution around dams and generating stations. To learn more about water safety, please visit opg.com/ watersafety . OPG generates safe, clean, reli-
able, low cost power for Ontario. More than 99 per cent of this power is free of smog and greenhouse gas emissions. OPG’s power is priced 40 per cent lower than other generators, which helps moderate customer bills.

Janice Visneskie Moore, left, Renfrew County and District Health Unit, Board of Health chair, Carolyn Froats-Emond, who has received the Peer Recognition Award from the Ontario Society of Nutrition Professionals in Public Health with Community Dietitian and Liz McLaren, Coordinator of Health Promotion Programs.
Renfrew County dietitian recognized by board of health for provincial award The Renfrew County and District Board of Health is pleased to announce that Carolyn Froats-Emond, community dietitian, has received the Peer Recognition Award from the Ontario Society of Nutrition Professionals in Public Health (OSNPPH). At its May meeting, the board of health congratulated Froats-Emond on receiving this provincial award that acknowledged her exceptional leadership and contributions over the last 15 years in the areas of school nutrition and food security. “Carolyn is very deserving of this prestigious award and exemplifies excellence as a registered dietitian working at Renfrew County and District Health Unit,” stated board of health chair Janice Visneskie Moore. Highlights of Froats-Emond’s work include her leadership in the development of Bright Bites, a webbased program that guides schools in providing an environment that supports healthy eating for children. She also led a provincial group to develop Sip Smart! Ontario, a program designed to address the issue of sugary drinks. This was in response to research that identified that consuming too many sugary drinks puts children at higher risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and cancer. Teachers across Renfrew County and District have been trained to deliver this classroom education program to students from grades 3 to 7, in order to help children make healthy drink choices.
In the area of food security, she worked on OSNPPH’s Position Statement on Responses to Food Insecurity. This document highlights the inadequacies of food charity — such as food banks — as a response to food insecurity, and calls for the implementation of a basic income guarantee as an effective, long-term solution to reduce food insecurity rates. This statement was endorsed by the Renfrew County and District Board of Health, and now guides the health unit’s advocacy efforts for income-based solutions to food insecurity. “I love doing work that I think is important and has an impact on public health nutrition,” said FroatsEmond, as she reflected on the award. “I have been able to work with skilled colleagues across Ontario on developing provincial programs, and then see them implemented locally. This has been rewarding.” Froats-Emond has worked as the Renfrew County and District Health Unit’s community dietitian since 2007. She began her career as a public health dietitian at the North Bay and District Health Unit, prior to returning to the valley where she grew up. “Carolyn is highly respected by her peers and colleagues at the Renfrew County and District Health Unit, and we are proud of her accomplishments,” stated Liz McLaren, co-ordinator of health promotion programs at the health unit.

IN PHASE 4!!
TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Get ready for the first-ever Bonnechere Manor Foundation Gala. The premier event, which according to organizers is sure to sell out, is set for Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Rotary Hall of Bonnechere Manor. Tickets officially went on sale for the event on Aug. 31 with Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy purchasing the first ticket for $100, with a tax receipt for $60 from committee member Violet Rossy. Murphy encourages everyone to purchase a ticket and support the manor. “Our hope is to fundrasie for 83 beds, which would equate to $185,000,” said Murphy. “Certainly a gala such as this is not only a fundraiser but will be a lot of fun as well!” The event will include a champagne reception at 6 p.m., a served dinner by Arnprior’s Krave Bistro at 7 p.m., followed by an evening of music and dancing featuring the Ottawa Valley’s own Ghost Town Cryers. A number of local businesses have stepped up to help out. The champagne reception has been sponsored by the dress down days of the Aikenhead’s PharmaChoice staff; entertainment by Hobin Architecture; wine by Cobus Homes Inc.; and dessert by McNab, Stewart & Prince. The dinner sponsor and table sponsor opportunities are still available. The committee has been working hard on securing silent auction items from local businesses, including: tickets to Medieval Times, the Ottawa Senators 100 Classic outdoor hockey game, upcoming Shania Twain “Now” concert, Sens games, an iPad, iPhone and three nights of lodging and three rounds of golf in Myrtle Beach for two golfers, and more to come. The event will also be celebrating Canada 150 so black tie is optional or red and white attire is encouraged. There are less than 100 tickets available. For info or to buy a ticket, contact 613-432-4873, ext. 1252 or bgardiner@countyofrenfrew.on.ca or any committee member.

TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Terry Fox is a Canadian hero and his legacy continues to live on today. The 37th edition of the Terry Fox Run in Renfrew will take place at MaTe-Way Activity Centre on Sunday, Sept. 17. In May, 2016, The Terry Fox Foundation announced that over $715 million has been raised to support cancer research in Terry’s name. And since 1982, $401,000 has been raised by Renfrew and area. For 13 years, Tanya Campbell and Sheena Pilgrim have organized the event and is a cause that is close to both of them. “It is important to fundraise for cancer research because in some way cancer affects all of us,” said Campbell. “He is a Canadian hero and especially in this 150th year it would be great to see more participants out to celebrate Terry.” The pair has also made a tough decision as this is the last year they will be the head organizers and they are reaching out to the community to see if someone is interested in taking it over. “If we don’t have another organizer there will not be a Terry Fox Run in Renfrew next year,” said Campbell. “If we want to keep Terry’s memory alive in Renfrew, we need a new person or group to step up and keep this

Cobden Cobden’s annual Terry Fox walk is also taking place on Sunday, Sept. 17 at Logos Land. Registration time is anywhere between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and there is a barbecue for participants. This year the Cobden walk is in memory of Patsy Moore, who had never missed a walk. “She lost her fight with cancer, this spring and we will miss her,” said organizers. They are also planning a balloon launch at 12:15 p.m. It is not necessary to collect pledges. You can make a donation when you come and enjoy the beauty of the trails at Logos Land, located at 15906 Highway 17.

Golf news from Calabogie Highlands DONNA MARIE KENNEDY Calabogie Highlands
As with all courses in Ottawa Valley, the rain has played havoc with the best laid plans of mice and golfers. Despite the inclement weather, golf at the Highlands has continued at its regular pace. Both the women and men’s groups have played a variety of games and attendance has been exceptional considering that umbrellas were often the 15th club in the bag. The men’s intersectional team came second in their division and as such Highlands will be hosting its men’s division next year. This year the men introduced a member-guest day in their schedule. It was well-attended and hopefully will become an annual event. A good time was had by all those who attended and the Vegas-style scramble made it that much more interesting (and frustrating for those who rolled the wrong number). The women’s group also had an exciting season with match play arrangements being made between weather warnings. The addition of a B side consolation tier has made the game even more challenging for those who didn’t have

Over 75 people participated in the women’s member-guest with teams competing to see who would have the best decorated carts and costumes. This year’s theme was Canada 150 and as expected the golf course was a sea of red and white. The women intersectional team
came third in their division, hosted by The Oaks of Cobden. Club Championships were held the weekend of Aug. 26 with stiff competition in all categories. While it has taken a while for summer to arrive, the sun is finally shining and still lots of time for golf. Come and play a round at the Highlands.
Glow Ball at Dragonfly Golf Links on Sept. 15 BILL RAINBOTH General manager, Dragonfly Golf Links
Thanks to John Lacourse of J. Lacourse Carpentry and Sons for bringing his group of over 55 guests for nine and dine Friday, Aug. 25. On Sunday, Aug. 27 Dragonfly had the pleasure of hosting another 50 guests from MacKay Manor. The gang from the Manor are always a pleasure to serve. It is that time of year again when we start to run out of sunshine for our league play. There are only a few more weeks to go before the men’s closing on Sept. 16, and the ladies closing on Saturday, Sept. 30. The Bunker Busters blasted their way to a winning score on Monday men’s league with a one-shot victory over Riopelle Painting and Enright Tree Services. Closest to the pin were Joey Dufour on #5, and Joey Dufour again on #7. On Tuesday Scapa Tape “stuck it to the competition” winning B flight, and the team from Renfrew Victoria Hospital doctored a victory in A flight. Making up for a drought of holes in one earlier in the season, Gary Potter of Ottawa made his second career hole in one on Dragonfly’s longest par three - #13. #5, and Barry Pilgrim was closest on #7. Thursday ladies night felt a little like the end of summer with a cool high of only 14C. Four “hot shots” to tell you about are Amanda Cameron who was closest to the pin on #5, Jenn McNulty on #7, Kathy Hamilton on #13, and Lindsay Scobie was closest on #18. Savoring their victory in A flight are Grip it & Sip it. B flight had a tie between Top Tess and the Tee Time Girls with the latter emerging victorious. C flight was also hotly contested with the Garden Lake Loonies winning a tie breaker over the Driving Fours. Dragonfly is pleased to say that it is hosting the third annual Glow Ball Golf Night on Friday, Sept. 15 with proceeds going towards the Sunshine Coach. Spots are limited in this event. RGC ladies win senior intersectionals week, with Schwartz Drywall knocking off season-long winners Rowat Insurance in A flight. Midtown Flooring finished second in A flight, with Rowat third. In B flight, Finnigan’s shot the low score of the week with a 60, with Welch LLP finishing second and Team Corona third. Both Finnigan’s and Welch will be moving up to A flight. In C flight, we had a tie between our friends from Pontiac and (finally, we can write the best golf team name ever) Weapon of Grass Destruction; both will be in B flight for at least the next two weeks. And in D flight, Silverbacks and Bushwackers finished one, two. Weekly winners were Jim Horner, James Briscoe, Denver Mullen and Reg Lutz for Aug. 21; and Chad Routcliff, Jim Senack, Chris Guyea and Doug Letang for Aug. 28. In Wednesday’s ladies rec league, Annie’s Angels shot a great 25 for their second round to win A flight by

Congratulations to our ladies senior intersectional team, who narrowly defeated Greensmere, Brockville and Madasawka to win the Ottawa Valley Golf Association’s E Division. Renfrew Golf Club’s (RGC) team of Mary Jo Wertwyn, Mary Ann Abrams, Anne MacNeil, Marg Agnew, Barb Desilets, Cheryl Campbell, Marsha Hale and Anne Windle ended up tied with Greensmere at the conclusion of the matches. After the first tiebreaker — headto-head matches against Greensmere — produced another tie, Renfrew was declared the winner using the second tiebreak method: head-tohead matches starting with the lowest handicaps. Congrats to both Mary Ann Abrams and Anne MacNeil, who both scored all six points in their matches. Both men’s and ladies rec leagues finished their two-week blocks this

C flight was won by Beside the Green, with HighBallers finishing second. Haven and Slice Girls finished one, two in D flight and move up to C flight. Weekly prize winners were Yvonne Sklepowicz, Lesley Wright, Cathy Valleau and Bonnie Beattie for Aug. 23; and Mary Ann Abrams, Dirty Birdies, Arlene Smith and Kelly Pultz for Aug. 30. It’s hard to believe we’re almost into September and our rec leagues are getting close to their season-ending tournaments. The ladies rec league closing is Sunday, Sept. 24 and the men’s rec league closing is Saturday, Sept. 30. Both tournaments have 12:30 p.m. shotgun starts.

Jiu Jitsu academy to offer bully-proofing program DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
A bully-proofing program opens in Arnprior in September with an instructor who is one of a handful in the country certified by Gracie Academy. Registration opens Sept. 1 at Nick Smith Centre during regular business hours for Gracie Bullyproof, a nonviolent, self-defence based program meant to give children the confidence and tools to stand up for themselves. “We teach children to diffuse confrontations with verbal assertiveness and to neutralize a threat without punching or kicking if they are attacked,” reads Arnprior Gracie Jiu Jitsu’s website. “Essentially we teach your children to fight fire with water.” The California based academy, established in 1925, was founded by the Gracie family of Brazil. Royce Gracie is a UFC Hall of Famer considered by many fans to be the most influential figure in the history of modern mixed-
martial arts (MMA). However, the bully-proofing program in Arnprior has little to do with the punching, kicking and blood-soaked mat seen in the octagon cage. Some of what they do is “verbal assertiveness and training” during role-playing. Learning mount control (how to be on top of the opponent) is also included. “There is no striking or choking,” instructor Kyle Donnelly said of the Bullyproof program. “We teach nonviolent self-defence. You don’t learn to fight but gain the confidence to stand up and control the bully until an adult arrives. “One thing that sets the Gracie Bullyproof program apart is the character development program.” His method involves using natural body movements, energy efficiency, and punch protection. “We talk about what really happens when a bully wants to punch you,” he Submitted said, adding that karate was too unreDonning his blue belt, Kyle Donnelly is with head instructors Ryron, alistic for him to teach to his own chilleft, and Rener Gracie at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, California. dren. That’s what drew him to Gracie.

Donnelly moved to Arnprior almost four years ago with his young family. He grew up practicing karate and competed on the varsity wrestling team at the University of Guelph. He has been training Gracie Jiu Jitsu for the last three years. In that time he has earned his blue belt under Rener and Ryron Gracie and completed the intensive instructor certification program. It included him travelling to California for the final exam. Bullyproof classes are broken up by age: four to seven, eight to 12, and 13 to adult. Classes will take place at the Arnprior Curling Club two nights a week. The Town of Arnprior approves of the program, as do a few local service groups and the town’s safety council. The one-hour class costs roughly $7.20 or more, depending on age and other factors. Class sizes are capped at 40 participants. Free trial classes will be offered to children and adults. Classes start Sept. 20. For more, see arnpriorgjj.com.

September is right around the corner, and the Arnprior Community Choir is busy getting ready to start its new season of making joyous choral music under its founding director of music, Lisa Webber. Membership in the choir is open to all adults who love to sing and who are willing to commit to the “team sport” of choral singing. And don’t be
concerned if you’re not sure whether you are a soprano, alto, tenor, or bass -- Lisa will help you decide. Should you decide to join the choir, you will be asked to make a commitment to attend all rehearsals held on Tuesday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch on Daniel Street. These rehearsals will be for public performances in December 2017 and May 2018 and for various presentations at community

Greater Madawaska Township opens public gallery Local art work will be gracing the hall of Greater Madawaska’s township building at 19 Parnell St. Calabogie. The building is open for the public Monday — Friday 8:30 a.m. — 4 p.m. This building was the village’s public school with a rich history and has been retrofitted to be the central offices for the township of Greater Madawaska for several years now. The first exhibit to be on display was on July 4 of the Canada 150 arts event — The Art Tree Project. It was an impressive showing of 15 art trees of groups creatively depicting their story and place in their community. The second show is of students’ art from classes offered through Burnstown Arts. Some of these students have been taking drawing classes for up to five years with art instructor Marlene Schaly. Margaret Duggan’s art work is a great example of what has been learned in art instructor Iya Carson’s adult classes. This exhibit shows students work from children, teen and adult classes that have reached an intermediate to advanced level in skill development. This exhibit will be up until Sept. 29. There will be ongoing rotating art exhibits. Check out the Facebook page: Burnstown art workshops for more pictures of this exhibit and about upcoming art Tristan Layman age 17, of RCI, also has work on display at the new gallery. classes.
There is a new public art gallery at the Greater Madawaska township building at 19 Parnell St. in Calabogie. Work includes this piece, far left, by Cassie Campbell, age 17, of St. Joe’s high school, Renfrew. Left is a piece by Hayden Forrest, age 10, of McNab Public School, that is featured at the new art gallery at Greater Madawaska’s township building.

dependently project into the air. That bill belongs to the crossbill. There are two species of crossbills and both occur sporadically in our area. Red crossbills have black wings, but only the males are red; the females are green. The sexes of white-winged crossbills also bear different colours (males are pink, females are green). Both sexes bear bold, name-giving white bars on their black wings. Both crossbill species eat the seeds of conifers, which they extract with the use of their unusual bills. The first step to successful dining for a crossbill is to find the cones of a preferred tree (white pine for red crossbills and black spruce or white spruce for white-winged crossbills). Cones are often plucked from the branch and clenched tightly in one foot. A crossbill then inserts its crossed tips under the adjoining scales of a cone. It opens its bill sideways, the curved tips prying apart the scales. When the seed hidden beneath the scales is exposed, the bird’s long tongue extends in and plucks out the seed. Seeds are tough and hard to physically break down, even for the crossbill’s tough gizzard — a muscular organ lined with a tough cuticle containing sharp projections. To help the gizzard do its job, crossbills swallow small stones and grit. When the gizzard’s muscular walls
contract, those items help it function like a gristmill. Grit is often picked up from gravel roads where, sadly, crossbills and other finches, like pins struck by a bowling ball, fall victim to speeding cars. Red crossbills, like their close relatives, are nomadic and move widely to find huge seed crops, delaying nesting until they find one. Their courtship songs are strange things, sounding to me like tiny mechanical toys being wound up. Because of their dependency on large seed crops, crossbills delay nesting until one is found and thus are known to nest in almost every month of the year. While resident red crossbills eat pine seeds, a smaller-billed race from the Rockies dines on hemlock seeds. Recently, this race appears to have moved into our area and can be seen dining on spruce seeds. The approaching seasons should be alive with both species of crossbills, because most species of conifers are currently laden with cones. In Algonquin Park, pine branches are bending under the weight of their cones. If you see a crossbill, be sure to watch how it expertly uses its oddlyshaped bill to extract seeds from the cones. For these birds, a messed-up bill works just fine. The Nature email is mruntz@start. ca
BEING A GRANDPARENT IS SUCH A GIFT. THROUGH THEIR FAMILY FOUNDATION, DAVE AND ANN TRICK ARE BRINGING SOME MAGIC TO THE LIVES OF CHILDREN AT CHEO. Dave and Ann Trick are so proud of their nine grandchildren. Over the years, many of the Trick’s grandchildren have visited CHEO for everything from broken bones to tests and treatment for various health issues. Dave and Ann are grateful that today, they all are healthy! But that wasn’t always the case.
GRANDPARENTS DAY IS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2017. A gift to CHEO’s Grandparents Program, either as a grandparent or to honour special grandparents, will transform your gratitude into specialized care for all families who need CHEO.
In 2011, their youngest granddaughter Emily suffered a stroke in-utero. She spent two weeks in CHEO’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Thanks to their interventions, and continued care through CHEO
and OCTC, Emily is thriving. For the Trick family, supporting CHEO was an easy choice. Dave and Ann established their foundation with one clear goal in mind: “We wanted to inspire philanthropy within our own family,” Dave explains.
“We are delighted to help provide an excellence in care that all grandchildren deserve,” says Ann.
Please support the Grandparents Program

36 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, September 7, 2017
Back to school time was yet another reminder of Depression Getting ready to go back to school after the summer was over, was no big deal. Smart’s Drug Store put out long tables of the school books we would need, and what couldn’t be traded or handed down from an older brother or sister, had to be bought. That meant more chickens, eggs and whatever else could bring in a few dollars would have to be peddled door to door by Mother to pay for what we would need in school supplies. For me, unlike bad Marguirite, there would be no new clothes. What I had worn before would be washed and starched if needed, and any missing buttons sewn on. If I was lucky, I might get a new pair of store-bought bloomers to wear in place of my flour bag ones I wore every day. But I would be allowed to wear them only for the first day back to school. As if anyone, other than me, would know I even had them on! It was a Saturday. A week before school was to start. We were on our way into Renfrew, just Mother and me. The back seat of the Model T was loaded with what Mother hoped would sell so that we could buy our house supplies, and have enough left over to buy what books we needed for school. There’s no use in asking, I said
“They don’t have to be fancy... as long as they are girl’s shoes,” I said again, barely whispering. Again, Mother didn’t answer MARY COOK for the longest time. “Mary, I know to myself. ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, don’t let plans that don’t come to fruition discourage you. Many of your plans will fall into place, and there is plenty of time to think of others. Keep dreaming away.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
