Piping out summer at O’Brien Park Brothers Gage, Tate and Landon Skelhorn settle in for the Aug. 24 Renfrew Highland Pipes and Drums concert at O’Brien Park in Renfrew.
The 162nd edition of the greatest fair in the Ottawa Valley is on. The Renfrew Fair that is, runs from Sept. 7 to 11 at the fairgrounds on Veterans Memorial Boulevard. Judy Dobec, general manager for the Renfrew Agricultural Society is very excited about this year’s edition of the fair including the addition of a new midway provider: Carter Shows. “So far they have been very good to work with and I am sure that will continue,” said Dobec. Carter Shows is set to bring 25 rides to the fair including the Zipper, Polar Express and many more favourites. The excitement of the fair kicks off on Wednesday night with the annual demolition derby at the grandstand at 7 p.m. “The cars are selling quickly and we are expecting a large turnout,” said Dobec. “It’s a nice and noisy night out.” The entertainment line-up promises something for everyone. On Sept. 8 Leahy-Next Generation will perform at 8 p.m., on Sept. 9 Jess Moskaluke hits the stage at 8 p.m. and on Saturday Honeymoon Suite will play at 8 p.m. “It’s an amazing line-up for the grandstand shows, we feel,” said Dobec.
During the day there will be plenty of music for fairgoers. “We have local entertainment on the Valley stage,” said Dobec. “It’s a chance to showcase local talent.” Dobec encourages people to visit the Exhibit Hall to see all of the amazing creations. “It’s a friendly competition between families and neighbours,” said Dobec. “And grandparents love to go upstairs and see the kids work.” There are a variety of agricultural exhibits and Dobec is looking forward to the weekend horse shows. “We have a phenomenal heavy horse show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. and we have the North American Six-Horse Hitch Classic too,” said Dobec. “Those majestic horses are beautiful when they are hitched up.” On Saturday there will be a number of free youth activities including Little Ray’s Reptile Show, Rock The Arts Puppets, face painting and crafts. “It’s all free for the kids,” said Dobec. The fair opens Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. and runs until Sunday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. For more details on the fair visit: http://www.renfrewfair.com/. Dobec encourages everyone to come out to the fair. “It’s the best fair around!”

Renfrew County family earn BMO Ontario Farm Family award Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
One of the areas most well known families is growing in stature. McGregor’s Produce has been named one of ten Ontario families who will receive the 2016 BMO Ontario Farm Family award. “It certainly is an honour to be given the award and to be one of the 10 in Ontario,” said Jim McGregor, who is the fourth generation of McGregor’s to farm on the land. His children Ian and Cameron are now the fifth generation on the land. “It’s humbling to be chosen.” The families are being honoured for their dedication to Ontario’s agriculture sector and the rural way of life. He feels the award is a chance to shine the light on farming. “In our business its positive to get some exposure,” said Jim. “It also makes you feel good that people in the community think you are contributing.” The farm started with 200 acres of land, which dates back to when Jim’s great grandfather and great uncle moved from Beckwith to McNab Township in 1856. At that time they erected a log home close to where they later built the current stone home. Jim’s father and grandfather were both born in the
home. Ian and his wife Deb now live in the homestead. McGregor’s Produce is located in McNab/ Braeside Township on Lochwinnoch Road and they have 1,000 acres of owned and leased land and this year 1,500 apple trees were planted. They have 14 fresh produce stands throughout Renfrew County and participate in four farmer’s markets. Some of their produce includes: strawberries, raspberries, beans, tomatoes, corn and more. Mary Harris, account manager at Renfrew’s Bank of Montreal, nominated the family for the award. “When I think of a family who exudes all of the traits and attributes that contributes to rural life I think of them right away, they are very active in so many charities,” said Harris. “They really are involved in the community and they have so much depth in the community.” The family has been involved with a number of farm and church clubs over the years and also donate produce and money throughout the Valley to several local food banks and senior homes. Harris also thinks they work very well together as extended family and says its nice to see the different generations work together. See McGREGOR’s, page 5 SUBMITTED

Wardens push for more natural gas, high-speed in rural areas Eastern Ontario’s rural communities need better natural gas, hydro and high-speed Internet services and lower policing costs. Those are some of the issues members of the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (EOWC) raised with provincial Cabinet ministers at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) annual conference held in midAugust in Windsor. Among the “significant issues” facing the region are the need to: • extend natural gas into rural communities for the residential and commercial sector: • bring improvements and expansions to the hydroelectricity transmission grid, on an urgent basis, to serve the growing needs of businesses and industries across the region; • make mobile broadband services available to businesses and residents by closing the coverage and capacity gaps in the current cell networks, while building a first responder public safety network that can serve as a model for the provincial and federal levels; • urge the provincial government to focus on plans for growing rural Eastern Ontario’s economy rather

“They are the perfect farm family because they are ambassadors for agriculture.” Harris also points out that for the fifth year in a row Renfrew County has had a winning family. “We are the only county in Ontario to be able to boast a winner for each of the five years,” said Harris. Past local winners include: The Bromley Family of Spruce Briar Jerseys, The Stewart and Vera McBride Family of CMcB Holsteins, The Reid Family of Davdonest Holsteins, The Alex and Betty Briscoe Family of Briscoelea Holsteins. “We have a lot of good farms in Renfrew,” said Jim. “A lot of farm families are involved in the community and interested in both sustainable and environmentally friendly farming.” They will be formally recognized at the International Plowing Match Expo in the Town of Minto (Harriston) on Sept. 24. Eighteen members of the family who are involved in the farm will make the trip for the presentation. “It’s going to be great,” said Jim. “There will be a presentation and a lunch under the tent. It will be fun and nice to have all the family there.” MO GAT VIE ES S S OPE TA N 7 RT PM @ DU SK

than creating more barriers to development; • stem the rising tide of Ontario Provincial Police and other emergency services costs, which are impacting the ability to invest in local municipal infrastructure. “In the case of energy costs, they are increasing at an unprecedented pace, with no end in sight, and the reality is that rural customers are shouldering a disproportionate burden compared to their urban counterparts,” said EOWC chair Peter Emon, who is Warden of Renfrew County. “High energy costs force families to choose between electricity bills and other basic necessities and services, posing a growing threat of ‘energy poverty’ across our region and the province.
They also hurt the growth potential of our businesses, which have also expressed the urgent need to address grid reliability issues and high expansion costs.” As part of its advocacy work during the AMO Conference, the EOWC delivered a written formal submission to the Ministry of Energy regarding the province’s next Long-Term Energy Plan. The submission includes recommendations around making the necessary infrastructure investments needed for the expansion of energy systems; bringing a reliable flow of natural gas and electricity to rural and remote areas of Eastern Ontario; and advocating for more affordable energy solutions for rural Ontario. “We also spoke directly with Ontario ministers about other concerns that create
significant financial burdens on municipal budgets, such as the rising cost of policing and emergency services, the broken interest arbitration system contributing to those escalating costs, and the current legal system known as joint and several liability that holds municipalities financially responsible for issues often out of their control and jurisdictions, and raises their insurance premiums,” said Emon. “Municipal taxpayers are increasingly realizing that local governments cannot continue to manage these costs and that the Province must take action on these issues to ensure we can continue to fix our roads, bridges and water systems,” he added. The EOWC represents 13 counties and single-tier municipalities and 90 local municipalities across rural Eastern Ontario.

Campus and dorm fire safety tips College/University students living away from home should take a few minutes to make sure they are living in a fire-safe environment. Educating students on what they can do to stay safe during the school year is important and often overlooked. • Look for fully sprinklered housing when choosing a dorm or offcampus housing. • Make sure your dormitory or apartment has smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside every sleeping area and on each level. For the best protection, all smoke alarms should be interconnected so that when one sounds they all sound. • Test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms at least monthly. • Never remove batteries or disable the alarm. • Learn your building’s evacuation plan and practice all drills as if they were the real thing. • If you live off campus, have a fire escape plan with two ways out of every room. • When the smoke alarm or fire alarm sounds, get out of the building quickly and stay out. • During a power outage, use a flashlight. • Cook only where it is permitted. • Stay in the kitchen when cooking.
FACT:Nearly 85% of dorm fires were started by cooking.
• Cook only when you are alert, not sleepy or drowsy from medicine or alcohol. • Check with your local fire department for any restrictions before using a barbeque grill, fire pit, or chimenea. • Check your school’s rules before using electrical appliances in your room. • Use a surge protector for your computer and plug the protector directly into an outlet. • Ensure doors and windows open easily to provide two ways out of every room. The Renfrew Fire Department wishes all students the best of luck in the upcoming school year. The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, September 8, 2016 5

Camp Glissando 2016 a resounding success Vicki Luhta
Camp Glissando, now in its second successful year, was an amazing two weeks of music, fun and games. Week one had campers from ages six to nine singing, playing all sorts of woodwind, brass, string and percussion instruments, learning about music and composers, and having fun with crafts and games. Week one ended with a Friday evening concert for parents and friends as they displayed all their musical talents they had learned thoughout the week. Week two had campers from ages 10 to 13 singing in two-and-three-part harmony, exploring all the instruments, learning music theory and composers, and having fun with crafts and games. Again, the week ended with a Friday evening concert to showcase all the new musical skills and songs they had learned. There were also performances on violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone , trumpet and trombone. We had a terrific and talented student helper – thanks goes to Emily Helferty for all her assistance. A special thanks to Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church and our sponsor – the Ottawa Valley Music Festival. It was an amazing two weeks and the campers were awesome. Camp Glissando is a great place for children to experience all kinds of instruments, learn and explore music and make new friends. Everyone is already looking forward to next year’s camp! If you missed this year don’t worry. Information on Camp Glissando 2017 will be available in the new year. Like us on Facebook and stay tuned.

OPINION
Connected to your community
Try keeping it kind September brings so many changes to our lives it is sometimes hard to process them all. This week students in Renfrew County hit the books for another year, for some it is the most exciting time ever but for others it can be quite scary. In a recent interview one local principal gave out two key pieces of advice: get involved and stay positive. No a days there are so many things to do before and after school it is a balancing act to pick and choose what you would like to do. It is key to get involved in something from sports to the arts to technology clubs the opitions are endless. Getting involved will give students a whole different perspective on their school experiences. Students and parents can learn so much together from these new adventrues from balancing schedules, to meeting new friends and learning how to make a difference in society. Making a difference brings us to the second piece of advice: stay positive. Such a simple concept for not just students but everyone. For students going back to class you will all be starting with 100 per cent, stay positive and you will be able to do any-
thing you want. For the rest of us not in school, maybe we should try staying postivie and being kind to one another as well. What kind of world would this be if there were more please and thank you or more people offering to open the door for you when you have your hands full. It is our responsibility to be an example to the next generation not only when they enter the classroom but everyday. Being positive and kind will change the world. When was the last time that you made the extra effort to be kind to your neighbour or helped someone down the street. As the leaves on the trees start to change this week, we are reminded of how special the Ottawa Valley is. This time of year can be one of the most stressful times for students and adults. Embrace the unique fall traditions we have in the Valley such as the Renfrew Fair from Sept. 7 to 11 or the Taste of the Valley in a few weeks. Remember sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone and take a leap of faith off of a cliff, figuritivly speaking of course, to make a difference in your life. But most of the time all you have to do is get involved, stay positive and be kind.
Group home for brain injury patients proposed September declared Prostate To the Editor:
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the result of an accident, such as vehicle, sports, farm, household, military action. Our son has been living with the effects of a severe traumatic brain injury acquired in a van/train collision in 1980 when he was 18. We are now elderly, and quite concerned about his future, especially when we note that there are very few resources in Renfrew County that are designed to meet the unique requirements for management of his care. Renfrew Mayor Don Eady has officially proclaimed September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Renfrew in support of the one in eight Canadian men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and their families. Statistically comparable with breast cancer, it is of vital importance that we increase our collective understanding about a disease that, when detected early, is over 90 per cent treatable. In 2015, an estimated 24,000 Canadian men were diagnosed, and this number is expected to double by 2030 due an aging population. Stephanie Cole Prostate Cancer Canada

Enbridge Gas donates to Renfrew Fire Department On Aug. 29, Enbridge Gas Distribution announced its partnership with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council to help the Renfrew Fire Department purchase firefighting training materials. “Safety is a priority at Enbridge and we are proud to support Ontario firefighters who share in our commitment to help keep our communities safe,” said Michael Wagle, Enbridge Gas Distribution. Project Assist is a program that supplements existing training for Ontario volunteer and composite fire departments in the communities where Enbridge operates. This year’s $100,000 donation will be shared by 20 Ontario fire departments, including the Renfrew Fire Department. Funds will be used to purchase educational materials for firefighters to enhance life-saving techniques. Since the launch of Project Assist in 2012, 84 Ontario fire departments have received additional firefighter training. “The Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council is proud to partner with Enbridge Gas Distribution for Project Assist. Firefighting is a dangerous and unpredictable profession and firefighters need to be prepared for any hazardous situation,” says Arthur Pullan, executive director of the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council. “Project Assist helps fire departments access a variety of training materials to supplement their regular training programs and ultimately contributes to firefighter safety on the job.” “A few years back, Enbridge Gas, partnered with The Fire Marshal’s Public Safety Council, gave a helping hand to the Renfrew Fire Department with a Project Zero grant. That generous donation of carbon monoxide/smoke alarms are currently serving Renfrew residents, by

Enbridge Gas Distribution helps Horton Fire Department On Aug. 29, Enbridge Gas Distribution, the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and Horton Fire Department announced they are partnering to improve home safety and bring fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths down to zero. Horton Fire Department received 104 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Project Zero – a public education campaign that is providing a total of 3,330 alarms to residents in 15 Ontario municipalities. This year, Enbridge invested $100,000 in Project Zero. Since 2009, Project Zero has been
launched in 78 Ontario communities. Last August, Thorold Fire and Emergency Services responded to a report of a carbon monoxide alarm being activated at a Richmond Street address. The responding fire crew, coincidentally, were the crew that attended the residence in October 2014 to install carbon monoxide alarms as a part of the Project Zero program. Through this partnership - and the resources supplied by Enbridge and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council Thorold Fire and Emergency Services were

able to ventilate the home and divert a potentially tragic situation. When properly installed and maintained, combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms help provide the early warning that is needed to safely escape from a house fire or carbon monoxide exposure. Carbon monoxide is a toxic, odourless gas that is a by-product of incomplete combustion of many types of common fuels. It is important that all fuel-burning equipment be properly maintained to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Carbon monoxide alarms are recommended as a second line of defense to protect against the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. “Safety is a top priority at Enbridge and we are committed to helping ensure that there are no deaths due to carbon monoxide exposure in Ontario,” says En-
bridge Gas Distribution “This partnership will help educate customers about the importance of installing a combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm as well as properly maintaining fuel-burning equipment.” “The ongoing partnership between Enbridge Gas Distribution and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council for Project Zero has resulted in the distribution of over 24,000 combination alarms in Ontario communities,” says Arthur Pullan, executive director of the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council. “Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives and we are proud to support this program in an effort to help ensure the safety of Ontario residents who may have otherwise not been able to have these life-saving devices in their homes.”
Randy Corbin, Horton Fire Chief was grateful for the donation. “On behalf of Horton Fire Department and the Municipality of Horton, I wish to take this opportunity to thank both Enbridge Gas Distribution and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council for this generous donation of Smoke/ CO Detectors,” said Corbin. “It is our intention to distribute these, as much as possible, to the most vulnerable within our community. It has always been our intention to ensure that all homes are protected with these life saving devices. Distribution of these gifted smoke alarms will go a long way towards our fulfilling that goal.” Project Zero Smoke/CO Alarms are available in Horton Township at:Horton Community Centre 1005 Castleford Rd and Horton Municipal Office 2253 Johnston Rd.

Predictions for what could be a difficult Fall for wildlife With a blink of an eye summer has slipped by. Bird nests are now nothing more than empty egg cartons and their makers have fallen mute and will remain silent until next spring. Overhead, while a million stars burn brightly against the black curtain of moonless nights, peeps and cheeps tell us that warblers and thrushes are winging their way south. The severe drought that held much of southern Ontario hostage this summer will likely have ramifications extending well beyond this year. Areas with shallow soil were particularly hard hit. While deciduous trees that turned colour prematurely or dropped their leaves will likely recover next year, Eastern White Cedars that turned brown are undoubtedly lost. Other plants either failed to produce fruit or produced lower than normal amounts. In many areas, raspberries, Blackberries, Elderberries, and Pin and Choke Cherries are devoid of fruit. This will likely have serious consequences for Black Bears because these animals fatten for winter by devouring carbohydrate-rich foods. While lean bears might survive the winter, especially if temperatures are favourable, they’ll have a difficult time next spring. After leaving their dens in April, bears are confronted with a paucity of food for many weeks, and during this time their fat provides much of the nutrition that keeps them alive. Many White Spruce and White Pines
failed to produce cones this summer. While a lack of conifer seeds may not affect bears, it does determine what types of birds will be present this winter. Red and Whitewinged crossbills are major consumers of pine and spruce seeds, respectively. Thus, these fascinating birds with their odd, name-giving bills could well be absent from local woods this winter. The lack of cones might also be bad news for Red Squirrels. These vociferous rodents stash piles of cones under logs and tree roots, and these stores are dug up and consumed in winter. Only the seeds housed inside the cones are eaten, and a pile of scales on top of snow is a sure sign that a Red Squirrel has eaten well. A paucity of cones could affect the winter survival of these squirrels, which also store mushrooms after drying them on tree limbs. But not all trees and shrubs are devoid of fruit. Bumper crops adorn White Ash, Black Cherry, Wild Raisin, and a few other species. Scarlet Tanagers, Red-eyed Vireos, Blue Jays, and other birds are currently devour-

Beavers don’t hibernate; they depend on water under the ice for access to their food stores. All of this, of course, is speculation, and time will tell the true tale. ing the cherries so there’ll likely not be many left by the time snow arrives. However, if the ash crop remains intact, flocks of Bohemian Waxwings and Pine Grosbeaks might well liven our winter. The drought may also affect animals in other ways. Many beaver ponds currently display low water levels. If a severely cold winter descends on us, some ponds may freeze to the bottom, spelling disaster for

Ten tables of duplicate bridge competed at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre August 31 in an afternoon that saw a computer glitch force North players to get up to speed again on the use of the traveler scoring sheet. Some players needed the practice. In the Chalk Talk preceding the afternoon’s play, Wayne Daze gave guidelines to players about pre-emptive opening bids of two and three of a suit. First of all, he gave the range for weak two-bids as 5-11 points. A response of 2NT is artificial (conventional) and forcing, showing game interest and asking opener for a further description of the hand. If the opener has the minimum for the weak two-bid (5 to 8 points), then she rebids the original suit at the three level. With the maximum (9-11 points), opener bids another suit to show a feature – usually the ace or king – in that suit; with no outside feature, opener rebids 3NT to show a maximum. Wayne emphasized that a void is not considered an outside feature.Congratulations to the August 31 winners: NORTH-SOUTH

Another summer here at the museum has drawn to a close. Thank you to each and every visitor that took the time to stop in at the McDougall Mill Museum and explore what this place has to offer. The museum hosted guests from all across the world - including places such as Israel, Austria, Finland, New Zealand, Australia, England, Germany, France, China, Japan, Poland, Brazil, and all across Canada and the United States. This year, the museum put up a world map and visitors were able to visually display where they were visiting from - what an awesome addition this was! KID’S WEEK
Once again, the museum held its annual Kid’s Week, which ran from July 18 to 24 and saw nearly 140 visitors. Kids and families could come and experience the museum, take part in interactive activities, get their faces painted, and visit with the staff. Bringing children into the museum is always a great learning experience for them, and teaches appreciation of the past. GHOST WALK
On August 19, the McDougall Mill Museum hosted the fifth annual Ghost Walk, this year with a haunted house format, which allowed participants to come and go as they please. The turnout exceeded expectations with approximately 150 people. Cogeco was able to attend this event and filmed participants walking through, this video can be found online on the Cogeco Ottawa Valley Facebook page or the museum page. Thank you to all volunteers and participants for making this a success! STATS

All in all, summer 2016 at the museum was a busy and wonderful summer. Nearly 1,500 people came through the doors of the historic Grist Mill, many with memories and comments on Renfrew’s history. July was the busiest month with around 630 visitors - wow! The museum is closed as of Monday, September 5. Thanks for a great season, everyone - hope to see you next year!
Choir welcomes newcomers Did you ever wonder what it would be like to sing in a 75-voice choir? If you like to sing, now you have the opportunity to find out about choral music by joining the Pembroke Community Choir (PCC) as they begin their new season of practices for their Christmas concert. Registration and the first rehearsal will take place on Monday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Wesley Community Church, 210 Renfrew Street, Pembroke. This will be an exciting year for the choir – their first concert on Dec. 4 will feature beautiful Christmas choruses from classical composers, and to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, their spring offering will showcase several selections by Canadian composers. The PCC has been bringing choral music to local audiences for over 50 years and is also involved in the community through concerts at various seniors’ residences, caroling at the Santa Claus Parade or surprising unsuspecting shoppers with some fun singing flash mobs. Last year, 23 members of the PCC joined an international choir of 250-voices to perform a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City, an exciting and challenging experience. They welcome new members every year – their ages range from 14 to 84 and every age in between. There are no auditions to join;
prospective members are encouraged to come to any of the first three practices to try it out before they commit to joining—on Sept. 12, 19, or 26. If you drop in, a choir member “buddy” will show you the ropes and answer any questions you might have. The singers all agree that one of the great things about singing in a choir is that no matter what your ability, there will be another 65 or 75 voices to back you up and make you sound like a professional. The registration fee for a half-year is $50; full-year $80. Students or additional family members pay $50 or $30 for full or half-year. The fees help pay for choir expenses such as their music scores, rehearsal and concert hall rentals, guest soloists and musicians. The choir feels fortunate to have the continued participation and professionalism of director, Gerald LaRonde and accompanist Darlene TerMarsch. They always bring out the best in the choir, challenging members to continue to improve and to strive for an excellent performance. So, if you love to sing but have been hesitant to join a choir, this is your opportunity to try it out. For more information, visit their website at www.pembrokecommunitychoir.org or contact choir president, Linda Clark at 613-735-6604.

How often do you think about your feet? What about other people’s feet? Mary Etmanski has been an advanced foot care specialist for the

last 14 years. “It’s about looking after the healthy foot,” she said. “People say, well all you do is cut nails. It’s really not.” The work can be helping someone with diabetes to dealing with calluses, dry or cracked skin, to warts and ingrown toenails. Etmanski said at her busiest, she was dealing with 200 clients and estimated a ratio of 60 women to 40 men. Etmanski has worked in reflexology and even with wigs over the last three decades but has reduced her workload within the last few years, while referring her clients to other people. At 65 years old, her final day as a foot care specialist was August 31 with a round of golf planned to cap everything. She was also looking ahead to a trip to Halifax with her husband Mike, who retired back in May. “I had some fun,” said Etmanski. “I liked the one-on-one attention, it’s hard to describe the feeling. I’m very grateful to my clients and their generosity and loyalty.” Etmanski’s kitchen had plenty of cards and gift certificates on her fridge.
She is not ready to sit idly either in retirement. She has an idea with her husband for a very simple version of a home monitoring business, but that is just in the early stages. Etmanski will also be busy with sitting on numerous boards and even sang at a wedding recently. “There is no question that someone could do this as full-time work, if they wanted to,” said Etmanski, citing the numbers for the growing aging population. Etmanski has begun referring clients for the advanced foot care to Annora Mckinnon. She is a medical aesthetician, working at 72 Prince Ave West, Suite C in Renfrew for W Esthetics and she had been involved at a spa in Shawville beforehand. The twosome had met because Etmanksi had called for an appointment. “It’s a little nerve-racking,” said Mckinnon, noting doing work on someone’s feet, who also does it for a living can lead to doubts. “Does she go home and say, ‘I would have done this better,” she laughed. “It was a good sign when Mary came for another appointment.”

Etmanski decided to ask Mckinnon to get into the business because the two became friends. “I thought Annora had a nice heart,” she said. “I think that is very important when you are dealing with people everyday.” McKinnon will also be trained in the Gehwol products, which Etmanski believes are the best foot care products around. “It’s the learning process and advancing my training,” said Mckinnon, which peaked her interest in the work. “I feel I was going in this direction for my field. I am happy and very grateful that I could be someone Mary can refer her clients too and be [trusted with that.]” Mckinnon said, she doesn’t believe that people realize there are other options to care for their feet. Mckinnon is slated to take the same advanced foot care course that Etmanksi had done in Toronto, which is offered by Gehwol. Mckinnon will be officially into the advanced foot care specialist work come October 1. To book an appointment with Mckinnon call 613-432-8986.

Be safe around school buses
With a new school year now here, the Canada Safety Council is reminding drivers to be extra cautious as school buses return to the roads. Despite it being an annual occurrence, the return of school buses often brings about episodes of impatience, confusion regarding some of the rules of the road and a spike in fatalities and injuries among young pedestrians from September to November. With this context in mind, here are a few tips to ensure that everyone, from you to the littlest bus rider to the driver getting them to school, is staying safe on the roads: • Leave yourself a bit of extra time to get wherever you’re going. Being in a rush is no excuse for disobeying the rules of the road and endangering the lives of others. • When a bus has its arm extended and flashing lights, stop. It’s the law. Do not proceed until the lights are turned off, as there may still be children coming or attempting to cross the street. In most cases, traffic in both directions must stop unless separated by a median.
BACK TO SCHOOL & FALL REGISTRATION
Ten easy ways for students to save energy, money Students starting university and college may have graduated high school, but they may not have received an education in energy efficiency. Hydro One has a quick, 10-step lesson to help students keep electricity costs down for the new school year. When researching an apartment or house to rent, find out if your electricity bill is included in your rent or if you are billed separately. Study the time-of-use schedule and use high electricity-use appliances like the dishwasher, space heater, stove and dryer during off-peak hours as much as possible.
way to turn them all off. Get an honorary conservation degree by trapping the heat in your home in the winter. Keep doors and windows closed, hang thick-lined curtains to keep the heat in and install weather stripping around the doors to get an A+. Get additional credit for limiting your use of air conditioning. Keep your home or apartment cool in the summer by opening windows at night when it is cooler and closing blinds during the day to keep the heat out.
Consider using a fan to cool down, especially during peak hours. Air conditioning can use up a lot of electricity. Study your taps to ensure that you have no leaks. Ensure that you have your landlord fix any leaking taps to avoid sending extra money down the drain. Experiment by washing your clothes in cold water, during off-peak hours to keep costs low. Clothes dryers also consume a lot of electricity so hang dry your laundry to save on your bill.
TURN LIGHTS OFF
Regularly review your electricity usage by setting up an online account at www.HydroOne.com/MyAccount to track your electricity consumption by the hour. When you leave for class, make sure all unnecessary lights are turned off. After pulling an all-night cram session, turn off your computer and laptop. Remember science class? Electricity is drawn from household gadgets, electronic devices and appliances even when not in use. Plug appliances and equipment that are not used constantly into a power bar with an off switch for an easy and quick

The Renfrew Timberwolves are howling to go for the 2016-2017 season. The team has now finalized its roster and they will hit the ice with 12 forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies. The Wolves finished the preseason undefeated sporting a 3-0 record under the direction of new bench boss Mike Riopelle who is pleasantly surprised with the new team. “We came together quickly,” said Riopelle. “There’s a good range of players age wise and experience.” Riopelle says overall the players seem to be a good fit. “As coaches we are looking forward to the new season,” said Riopelle. The team has also named its three on ice leaders. Nolan Rook, a 21 year-old defenceman, will continue to wear the ‘C’ on the ice. “He’s been the captain for a couple of years and he is a good quiet leader,” said Riopelle. Isaac Perreault, a 19 year-old, centre/winger is one of two assistant captains. “He has a great connection with both the younger and older players.” And the other assistant captain
is Andrew McIntyre a 18 year –old centre. “He has the potential night after night to be the best player on the ice,” said Riopelle. “And maybe he represents the teams future as he has a couple of more good years with the team.” The Central Canada Hockey League Tier 2 regular season kicked off with a Labour Day weekend showcase at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata. The Wolves faced the Char-Lan Rebels on Friday, Sept. 2 and played Clarence Beavers on Monday, Sept. 5 (due to early press deadline, results were unavailable). It’s a busy week for the team this week with three games including the home opener at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre against rivals, the Arnprior Packers on Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. “It’s going to be exciting but it is not going to define us,” said Riopelle. “But it’s nice to play a rival.” He encourages people to make it out to the rink to check out the new team. “So far so good and the team is exciting that is why people should come out, to see the energy on the ice.” On Sept. 15 the Wolves travel to Ottawa to play the Ottawa West Golden Knights and it is back to home turf on Friday, Sept. 16 as they host the Prescott Flyers at 8 p.m.

Calabogie Trail Ride dedicated to memory of fallen rider Staff
This year’s Calabogie Boogie trail ride has been dedicated to the memory of a wellknown rider who died in a crash in the Calabogie area this spring. Blake MacMillan of Ottawa died at the age of 36 on May 1 in an off-road motorcycling collision in the Calabogie Highlands. The annual two day off-road race is being held Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11 in the hills and trails around Calabogie. The race has again attracted the maximum 200 riders. The Calabogie Boogie is touted as Ontario’s premiere ride event. Participants from all over Ontario, Quebec and the Northeastern U.S. are attracted by some of the best and most challenging riding terrain in the province. The ride is suitable for advanced novices
to expert riders, but not suitable for children or beginning riders. As well, small wheeled motorcycles will have difficulty, warn organizers. The riders are cautioned that most trails on the route will be single track, although dirt road and ATV tracks are used as connectors. There is a main loop, with various optional routes varying in difficulty. Saturday’s staging area is at the Calabogie Highlands Golf Course at 9 a.m. The start of Sunday’s ride is at Calabogie Peaks Resort. The event also includes a banquet Saturday evening for riders. MacMillan was an advanced trials and off-road rider who contributed unselfishly to the development of the skills of other riders. He was a director of the Bytown Motorcycle Association and its director of training. Just prior to his death, he led a novice skills camp for riders in Shawville.

A short but eventful week to report starting with our new inductees to the Hole in One Club. Huge congratulations go to Pam McFarlane who had an ace on hole five with her seven iron, and Jason Stewart had his hole in one on hole eighteen – also with a seven iron. I guess the moral of this story is that if you want a hole in one at Dragonfly you need only tee off with a seven iron! Beautiful weather returned to Dragonfly this past week and our league players were the beneficiaries. Starting with Tuesday, the team from MacDonald Glass won A flight for the first time since spring. The team from Valley Automation and Controls showed the precision and accuracy that makes them the choice of all Dragonfly’s electrical needs winning B flight. C flight champs were from Beatty Pilgrim Construction who “hammered” the back nine with the low score of the night, a 62. Closest to the Pin winners were

Local musician to hold EP release party Sept. 16 at Sand Point Golf Club “Momma said I was a dancer, before I could walk. She said I began to sing long before I could talk …” A famous line from an ABBA song that demonstrates nothing less than the start of Vicki Brittle’s musical talent and interest. Since the age of two when she began to sing, she has yet to stop. Making singing not only a passion, but a dedication at a young age, she began singing lessons with Arnprior Community Choir musical director Lisa Webber, studying Royal Conservatory Vocals. After developing beneficial and proper vocal abilities throughout the time of being Webber’s student, Brittle moved on to begin writing and singing on her own, and introducing herself to different genres. As Brittle began to explore herself and who she was as a musician, she began writing more than she could speak. Books upon books would be bought from the local dollar store just to keep her thoughts and songs contained. After some time of writing and attending Main St. School of Music, Brittle began to play local gigs and performing the national anthem for the Junior B Packers hockey team. This led to the first moment her family remembering her knowing who she was and who she was going to be. Brittle sang the national anthem at the Telus Cup that aired nationally in 2011 from the Arnprior Civic Centre. The joy on her face was beyond contagious as she shared the song of her country with fellow members of Arnprior, and visitors from all over. Although the cold weather didn’t bug her, she began MADISON IRONS/MOMENTS BY MADISON getting busy with music in all seasons, from bonfires and gigs to music school organized events. Vicki Brittle, shown playing on her single ‘Candy’, is inviting everyone Once music became an all-around-the-year thing, to her EP release party at the Sand Point Golf Club Friday, Sept. 16 at Brittle knew she was comfortable being hand in hand 8 p.m. with music 24/7.
Craig Cardiff to perform Sept. 11 Arnprior’s own singing sensation Craig Cardiff will perform two shows Sunday, Sept. 11 in support of two community initiatives. “One hundred per cent of the ticket sales will be split between Walter Zadow Public School’s Activity Fund and the Arnprior Public Library’s iPod Project” said Cardiff. “It’s my way of helping my daughter’s school and a music-based initiative spearheaded by the library.” The iPod Project is a fundraising endeavour to get a personalized musical playlist to each of the residents of the Grove Nursing Home. To date, 70 per cent of the fundraising goal for this project has been raised. “This concert will help us complete the first phase of this exciting project” said chief librarian Karen DeLuca. With a voice described as “warm, scratched, sad and sleepy,” Cardiff sings songs that expose the human condition, putting a magnifying glass to the clumsier and less proud moments. He can turn any setting into an intimate affair, infusing his music and lyrics with an uncompromising humanism. Cardiff makes it a point to keep the relationship with his fans personal, inviting and accepting any opportunity to make his audience as much a part of the performance as he is. Tickets cost $10 and available at the library for both the 3 p.m. matinee and the evening performance at 7. Kids 12 and under get in free.
Now is the time to change your Dentures Feel good about yourself
Through the bumps in the road, many learning experiences and personal discoveries, she has written and recorded her first E.P (Extended Play album) with a heavy heart and released her first single called ‘Candy’. With a heart built at home, Brittle is holding her E.P release party in Braeside at the Sand Point Golf Club on Friday, Sept. 16. She will be releasing and selling ($10) her whole album to the attendees the night of the release, and releasing the official E.P on iTunes Sept. 17. With a long list including her mother and father, Hedley and Angela Brittle, Vicki thanks everyone in the community who helped her assemble her wings in order to fly, with special mentions of Anders Drerup, Barb Martin (Main Street Of Music), Marty Jones, and studio musicians Rob and Stu. With open arms, the Brittles welcome everyone to come out to support their local musician/talent who is about to take flight. If you wish to attend the E.P release, doors open at 7:30 p.m. with showtime at 8 p.m. Special guests Two Tone Sunburst will also be performing. Let the music play.

Sisters share daydreams and fears under sunny skies The hot sun was beating down on my sister Audrey and me. We were on our backs in the long grass watching the soft white clouds form and reform in the mostly blue sky above. It was a favourite pastime for me. Not so much for Audrey, who went along with it because she knew how much I liked to pretend the clouds were little dogs, someone with long flowing white hair, or any number of things I could muster up in my young imagination. But that day was different. Audrey talked to me just as if I was her best friend Iva. Rarely did my older sister ever include me in serious chat. After all she was years older than I was. But that afternoon, it was like she had to get off her mind what she was thinking about. “I wish I could see the future,” she said softly. I knew there was more to come. “I would like to know what I will be doing when I am finished at the Northcote School.” I looked over at her face.
Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK
Her eyes were closed. She wasn’t looking at the clouds above us. “I really want to be a nurse. Or a teacher.” I knew she would make a wonderful teacher. Didn’t she spend hours with me showing me how to knit, embroider, print in my scribbler, and go over my spelling? And as far as being a nurse was concerned, I didn’t know one living soul in all of Renfrew County who had a kinder heart. She would make a wonderful nurse. And I could picture her in her uniform, with a nurse’s cap on her brown hair, and a pin on her collar to show the world she had graduated. Audrey let out the longest sigh. I wanted to get into the conversation and so I reminded her
of what our mother always said: “You can do anything you want to do, if you want to do it badly enough.” I thought that would make Audrey feel better, because she certainly didn’t seem too happy to me. But what I said didn’t seem to make her feel any better. And I told her I thought she should be a teacher and come back to the Northcote School when Miss Crosby was too old to teach anymore. “That will never happen,” she said in a voice I could hardly hear. “Well, what about being a nurse? Now, it’s the last thing I would want to be. I hate blood! But, Audrey, you would make a wonderful nurse.” She opened her eyes and looked at the soft white clouds moving in the sky, and I was pretty sure I could see that she was trying awfully hard not to cry. Why she would be feeling so sad on such a beautiful day was beyond me! “No, that will never happen,” she said, in a voice so low I could
hardly hear her. I wanted to know why. After all, she was smart and I thought she could be anything she wanted to be, and if she wanted to be either a nurse or a teacher, all she would have to do, is go out and do it. So I asked her why. What would stop her from being either? “Because there is no money. It costs money to be a nurse, and we could never afford to send me to Teacher’s College. No, I’m afraid I’ll never be either.” Now, there really were tears. Just gently rolling down her cheeks and into her hair. I knew if I reached out and touched her, it would cause a flood, so I stayed perfectly still and waited for Audrey to say something else. Finally, there was a big sigh, and she brushed the back of her hand across her eyes. And she pointed to a huge white cloud above us, and said she thought it looked like someone riding a horse. I couldn’t see anything that resembled a horse, but I said noth-
ing. Audrey had returned, and that was all that mattered. But long after we got up and went to do chores, I thought about what Audrey had said. Would that be my fate too? Was I destined to live out my life on a farm out in the country? And would my sister end up like so many other young girls who finished public school, working at cleaning houses for the rich people in Renfrew or married to another farmer? Was that all could happen to a child of the Depression? I knew I would not have the answer that day. I knew, like my sister Audrey, only time would determine what the future would hold for both of us, long after the Depression was behind us. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? About 30 people gathered at the Cobden Legion on Aug. 6 for the annual general meeting of the Muskrat Watershed Council (MWC). MWC chair, Karen Coulas invited Hal Johnson, Mayor of the Township of Whitewater Region, to say a few words. Mayor Johnson congratulated the MWC on what it has achieved so far and said the Whitewater Region Council supports the MWC in its efforts. “Success breeds success,” he said, “Keep going … It’s so important for us to work on this.” Coulas introduced the first guest speaker, Gerry Richards, of the Renfrew County Water Quality Leadership Group. He explained how six agricultural stakeholder groups came together in the fall of 2014 to explore how the agriculture community might participate in efforts to improve the health of watersheds across Renfrew County. The six groups were: the Renfrew County Steward-

The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, September 8, 2016 39
Report focuses pros and cons of watershed management models From page 39
The report also discusses the pros and cons of various models used elsewhere in Canada for organizing watershed management, such as conservation authorities (CAs); the Muskoka Watershed Council (a nonCA watershed council); the Alberta Shared Governance Model; environmental advisory committees and the community organizing approach. Richards said all groups consulted agree on several things: everyone wants clean water. And everyone understands the need to work together, to co-ordi-
nate and collaborate across different groups, and to have a united vision for how Renfrew County can take care of its watersheds The overwhelming consensus was that a conservation authority model would not be possible or desirable in Renfrew County. It is the most expensive option and CAs have become very demanding organizations in some places, said Richards. Instead, the watershed groups consulted said they wanted a way of coordinating watershed management that involves municipal decision makers but that is driven by commu-

nity and industry stakeholders. A sustained effort to manage the watersheds in Renfrew county will require full-time staff of some sort, such as a paid co-ordinator. Fundraising alone is a huge challenge. Applying for grants takes a great deal of time and specialized skill. Volunteer efforts alone will not sustain the momentum needed to coordinate watershed management across the County. The second guest speaker of the morning was Heather Murphy, program co-ordinator of the Love Your Lake program, which is funded by the Canadian Wildlife Federation and Watersheds Canada. This free national program is delivered through regional organizations such as the MWC, and lake associations. Love Your Lake will partner with the MWC to run this program on Muskrat Lake in 2017. Murphy started by describing how shorelines work to enhance wildlife and reduce erosion and flooding. She listed the signs of healthy and unhealthy shorelines and the impacts of each. The process of implementing Love Your Lake starts with a partnership agreement with a local organization or lake association. An introductory letter and values survey is sent out to property owners with shorelines. Trained staff and students then assess the shoreline of each property on the lake from a boat, with no disruption to property owners. The assessment consists of observations only, with a photograph for the report. Assessors look at structures and docks, retaining walls, vegetation and habitat. An individual report is written for each property owner, who receives a personal code to access their private report. The report contains a summary of the observations made, recommendations for voluntary actions and additional local resources. Recommendations could include such things as planting trees along the shoreline, removing lawns along the shoreline and allowing nature to take over, or installing eavestroughs and rain barrels to reduce erosion. The individual report is non-regulatory and is not shared with anyone but the property owner. A general, lake-level summary report is sent to the local organization that Love Your Lake partners with. port does not include any identifying information about property owners, such as names or addresses. For more information, visit LoveYourLake.ca After the guest speakers, MWC committees gave updates on their activities. The science committee reported two Algonquin students have been hired by the MWC to work with Julie Sylvestre, director of MWC’s science committee, and Sarah Hall, Algonquin’s environmental technical program coordinator on two projects aimed at monitoring and helping restore water quality in the Muskrat watershed. Algonquin College received funding from OMAFRA to set up controlled tile drainage (CTD) demonstration sites this summer, in collaboration with the MWC. Controlled tile drain systems allow farmers to control when and how much water leaves the field, potentially enhancing crop productivity while improving water quality. CTD structures are attached near the outlet of subsurface drains of an agricultural field, designed to hold back water and nutrients, and subsequently raise the water table for improved water availability to root systems. The structures contain a series of adjustable boards which can be raised or removed depending on the user’s preference. Generally, during the winter and spring they are open to allow water to drain and flow out of the field, and are closed in the summer to hold back water during dry weather. Mark Sunohara, a watershed science specialist for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, provided initial training on these structures. As well, the MWC’s agriculture committee organized two very well-attended meetings for farmers to discuss CTDs. The MWC also received funding from the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund (GLGCF) to support CTD work and shoreline restoration around Muskrat Lake. Other partners such as the Renfrew County Soil and Crop Improvement Program and Agriculture and AgriFood Canada are also collaborating on these initiatives. Four CTDs have now been installed at two properties, with the help of local drainage expert and contractor, Peter Neill. The two sites are easily accessible by car. To arrange a visit, please email muskratwatershedcouncil@gmail.com. Monitoring equipment is being used to record water level in the structures over time, in combination with a weather station that measures precipitation, wind speed and direction, air temperature and soil moisture content. The goal is to get a comprehensive understanding of optimal water retention for ideal crop yield based on crop type and environmental factors. The team will also be implementing other best management prac-
tices such as buffer strips and riparian (shoreline) zone enhancement on these farm properties and along Muskrat Lake. The group may also investigate the options of alternative tillage and cover crops. Data collected will be made public for other farmers who wish to try alternative methods or CTDs to improve their farming practices. For the shoreline restoration project, the team used the self-assessment criteria from Love Your Lake to choose potential properties to restore. These criteria include such things as the percentage of vegetation within 10 metres of the shoreline, signs of erosion, the presence of retaining walls, areas of natural wildlife habitat, the presences of beaches, etc. They used aerial imagery from the public Renfrew County mapping system to try to determine where there is opportunity for enhancement. Right now, the team is at the stage of contacting owners of several properties identified as candidates for shoreline enhancement to see if they are interested in a free shoreline restoration. This restoration would involve planting native species such as dogwoods, willows and alders. As well as the above projects, the team is continuing its partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) by collecting water quality data within their sampling network to further understand broader water quality factors and characteristics. MOECC has provided Algonquin College with in-kind donations to help with water quality monitoring (sampling), which covers monthly sampling at 24 sites. In addition to the grants mentioned above, the fundraising committee reported the MWC applied for many grants this year and was successful in receiving financial contributions from several municipalities: Whitewater, Laurentian Valley and Admaston-Bromley Townships. The MWC also created a new Corporate and Club Membership Program this year to encourage and recognize donations at the following levels: gold $1,000, silver $500-$999, bronze $200-$499 and friend of MWC $20-$199. SRB Technologies and Jp2g Consultants Inc. became the first Gold Corporate Members by each donating $3,000. The funds will be used for various projects, including the 2016 monitoring report to be prepared by Dr. Rebecca Dalton, the research specialist in chemical and environmental toxicology who prepared last year’s monitoring report.
