MP Gallant hosts large crowd for tax meeting DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
A group of about 150 people, in a line that stretched into the parking lot, attended a meeting over proposed small business tax changes. Hosted by Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant at the Cobden Agricultural Recreation Hall on Sept. 28, the meeting dealt primarily with effects on farm operators, some of who have joined forces across Canada with doctors. “Owners of small businesses will take a big hit, Gallant said, “because of this sneaky tax grab. The Liberal government has floated the potential changes for weeks on end, and has received pushback from various sectors. Many observers believe adjustments will be made in specific areas. Even finance minister Bill Morneau got a tongue lashing during a recent tax reform meeting in his riding. Folks at the Cobden meeting were considerably less heated, interested more in the facts and likely adjustments made prior to the reforms passing into law. Gallant was joined by two guests who attended other Conservative meetings in the region. Tom Kent worked at Revenue Canada and Chuck Rotenburg taught income tax

law at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. They zeroed in on three practices the Liberal government is proposing to end: • Income sprinkling diverts income from high earners to a family member with lower personal tax rates; • Passive investments funded from after-tax active business earnings; • Capital gains conversion from private corporation’s regular income for lower tax rates and limit access to the lifetime capital gain exemption.
sprinkling involves a part-time nurse who does the bookkeeping for her family farm. Her primary-breadwinner husband currently shares income with her or other family members over the age of 18 to lessen his tax burden. After Jan. 1 that could change. “Everyone chips in on a family farm, Gallant said. “They run errands and share in the ownership. Now they are being called tax cheats. “It’s insulting. They want to set tax collectors loose on our small businesses. She said the passive income pracThe example provided for income tice “is the most controversial be-
cause it could lead to $27 billion more in tax revenue for government coffers. It would be tantamount to “double taxation on the same savings. Or, about 73 per cent of total investment income would be taxed. “Government wants the money now because Justin Trudeau wants to spend it now, she said. “And with capital gains, all this is on top of all the other taxes. A group called Canadians for Tax Fairness has more than 14,000 signatures in support of the proposed tax reforms. They point to three “myths critics are spreading.
The first myth is the so-called attack on the middle class, according to the group. To noticeably benefit from the tax advantages (which they call “loopholes), someone would need to earn at least $150,000 per year. The average Canadian makes $49,000 per year and would not be affected. The second myth is that the changes will hurt small businesses. Most small business owners don’t make enough money to benefit from the tax advantages, according to Canadians for Tax Fairness. Small businesses will continue to benefit from the small business tax rate. The third myth is that farmers won’t be able to pass on family farms. “The reforms do not affect the $1 million lifetime capital gains exemption in place for transfer of family farms, reads the group’s website. “We support your reforms to start making the wealthy pay their fair share in tax, said Dennis Howlett, executive director of Canadians for Tax Fairness. “These loopholes have let a small group of very wealthy Canadians take advantage of a system that wasn’t meant to be used as a tax shelter for the rich. Canadians across the country are obviously very concerned about the high level of inequality that is dragging down our economic growth and well being.

Renfrew councillor taking it one day at a time after major accident Benefit dance planned for Coun. Tom Sidney at the Royal Canadian Legion in Renfrew on Saturday, Oct. 28 Tom Sidney is a fighter. The sheer will and determination in his voice is evident as he speaks from his hospital bed about his recent debilitating accident and what he faces next. “It’s all about gratitude, I am thankful I still have my brain and I can bend my finger a little more each day,” said Tom. “I try to find the positive in things and how I can turn things into something positive.” The Renfrew councillor is receiving treatment with the rehabilitation team at the Ottawa General Hospital after an accident on Sept. 1 that left him with little to no movement in his arms and his legs. “I’m feeling not too bad, some good days and some bad,” said Tom. After the accident a GoFundMe page was set up to support Tom and his wife Shelly during this difficult time, it has since surpassed its original goal of $7,000. “The support is a little surreal, it’s been overwhelming and that’s an understatement. I get a little emotional because I am just a regular family guy,” said Tom. “There are no words to thank the community enough. Thank you doesn’t seem enough for the awesome outpouring.” There is a second benefit event planned for Oct. 28 at the Renfrew legion. Tickets will be available at the door. He also praises the work done by the Renfrew County paramedics who responded, the Renfrew Hospital and Civic Hospital staff. He was also recently able to come to Renfrew for the
of strength to hold things, he has grippers for utensils, they have so many neat tools for him to try and they are trying to hook him up with devices to work on his fine motor skills,” said Shelly. “His legs are coming along, he does 15 minutes on the bike but his knees tend to buckle, he can stand holding on to something. They are really worried about him taking steps.” He has been able to utilize a number of different rehabilitation techniques at the hospital from working in the pool to a virtual reality lab that was built for military use during the Afghanistan conflict. Shelly is also thankful for another form of technology. “He can hit the words on the tablet and
they auto fill, thank God for technology, he can communicate through that,” said Shelly, who is able to text him when she leaves the hospital each night and travels back in Renfrew. He is still unsure when he will return to the Renfrew council table; he does have a tentative release date of Nov. 23 but is also looking into the possibility of using Skype (video chat) for the meetings. “If I work hard it could be sooner, it’s a juggling act,” said Sidney. “My goal was by Nov. 1 but the doctors trump me.” As to what’s next for him. “For now it’s one day at a time and hopefully one step at a time.”

weekend via the Sunshine Coach, because his house is already wheelchair accessible, which was also an emotional experience. Sidney’s wife Shelly admits he has good days and bad ones during the treatment. “We are feeling hopeful, things are moving along fairly well, it is slow,” said Shelly. “He’s doing quite well but every day is a challenge.” After his fall he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis — a hereditary spine deformity that was causing him sudden weakness and falls. He underwent emergency spinal cord surgery in Ottawa after the fall. She explains the status of some of his injuries and current state of mobility. “His arms work but he doesn’t have a lot

Accused triple murderer Basil Borutski was seeking revenge BRIER DODGE brier.dodge@metroland.com
Basil Borutski was seeking revenge when he went on a morning spree, killing three women he believed wronged him, Crown attorney Jeff Richardson alleged during his opening address on Oct. 4 at the Ottawa courthouse. The 59-year-old is charged in the Upper Ottawa Valley deaths of three women: 36-year-old AnasBASIL BORUTSKI tasia Kuzyk of Wilno; Nathalie Warmerdam, 48, of Bonnechere Valley and 66-yearold Carol Culleton of North Gower. During the opening address of what has been predicted to be a 17-week trial, Richardson said Borutski felt that the justice system was against him and took matters into his own hands. He’d been previously charged with matters relating to two of the victims as well as a son of one of the victims. Richardson told the jury that for the length of the trial, they are acting as residents of Renfrew County, describing the landscape, geography and population of the area before turning to the case he and co-counsel Julie Scott plan to present against Borutski. He said Borutski had befriended Culleton, a widow who owned a cottage near Barry’s Bay, but wanted more from the relationship than a platonic friendship. He found out Culleton had rekindled a relationship with a former boyfriend, later telling a friend he caught his girlfriend in bed with another man. On Sept. 22, 2015, he texted her, saying “karma will take over” and later showed up at her home, took a television cable, and strangled her, Richardson alleged. Richardson said Borutski then stole Culleton’s car and continued his spree, heading to Kuzyk’s home in Wilno. She had previously been in a relationship with him. He said when Kuzyk saw Borutski, she hid beneath her kitchen counter and screamed. Her sister saw him at the door and ran. “As she was leaving, a shot rang out,” Richardson said. “Anastasia Kuzyk died in her kitchen. Before 9 a.m. on this beautiful Renfrew County fall day, Basil Borutski had killed two women — but he wasn’t finished.” He alleged that Borutski then drove to the home of another former girlfriend. Nathalie Warmerdam was home with her son, Adrian, when Borutski arrived. Adrian heard his mother scream and then hid in the bushes in the back of the house and called 911, Richardson said. “By 9:20 a.m., Borutski had murdered three women,” he said. Borutski was arrested later that day in Kinburn, the gun he allegedly used in two of the killings was found in a nearby field. In police custody, he gave a statement confessing to the murders that was expected to be presented in court on Oct. 5. “This trial is not a whodunnit,” Richardson said.
“For Basil, these murders are all about justice. His kind of justice (against these women) for using what Basil says is a corrupt justice system against him.” He said that Borutski thought up the plan, then in the span of a couple hours executed his revenge plot to kill the three women he
felt wronged him. Borutski has chosen not to participate in the trial thus far, refusing to stand when asked or respond to any questions — even when asked what his plea was. He also has not hired a lawyer, so is representing himself, with a court ordered “friend of the court” there to act when needed.
Justice Robert Maranger instructed the jury “don’t try and guess why he has no lawyer, and why he is not participating,” reminding them the onus is on the Crown to prove that Borutski is guilty, not the other way around. The trial is ongoing, and expected to last 17 weeks.

Ottawa River heritage designation officially marked in Petawawa The Community Futures Development Corporation, serving Renfrew County, hosted a meeting to celebrate and discuss the designation of the Ottawa River as a Canadian Heritage River. The Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS) is Canada’s national river conservation program. It promotes, protects and enhances Canada’s river heritage and ensures that our leading rivers are managed in a sustainable manner. The governments of Canada and Ontario have designated the Ottawa River in Ontario the 39th Canadian Heritage River to the Canadian Heritage Rivers System. On Oct. 4 the plaque unveiling ceremony occurred at Petawawa Point Park, 1073 Island View Dr., in Petawawa. Becoming a Canadian Heritage River requires two formal steps; nomination and designation. Designation as a heritage river is not prescriptive and does not involve any legislation or restrictions. Land ownership and management does not change with the designation of a river. The Ottawa River was accepted on the basis of the river’s outstanding heritage values. “I’m delighted that through this plaque, we are commemorating the designation of the Ottawa River as a Canadian Heritage River. For Indigenous peoples, this river was a historic trade and transportation route, and today it continues to be important to communities along its shores. Canada 150 provides the perfect occasion to recognize and celebrate the importance of the
Ottawa River and its pivotal role in building Canada — and I applaud all the organizations involved that put so much effort in making this happen,” said Environment Minister Catherine McKenna. “The Ottawa River has been a vital channel for Ontario’s economic, social and cultural development throughout our history. OPINION
Connected to your community
Break the silence Talking about child abuse is difficult. However, the fact that one in five kids are subject to physical or sexual violence before the age of 18 means it’s a conversation that needs to happen in our communities. Many children who experience violence also live without access to a quality education or health care services, live in an unsafe home, or have parents facing unemployment. Family Children Services Renfrew County, the Phoenix Centre for Children and Families and Algonquin College Waterfront Campus partnered to launch the annual Purple Ribbon Campaign, which runs throughout the months of October. Every October, Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies (OACAS) and Children’s Aid Societies raise awareness about how to identify and help prevent child abuse. Among the key goals of the campaign is to educate the public and key partners about how calling a Children’s Aid Society (CAS) is one of the most effective ways to prevent child abuse. As part of this campaign OACAS and member CASs work closely with school boards, schools, and community partners on a provincial Dress Purple Day. The official Dress Purple Day will take place at schools and agencies this year on Oct. 24 and everyone is encouraged to participate.
While both men and women are perpetrators of violence against children, close to 90 per cent of all violence against children is perpetrated by men. Michael Coteau, MPP for Don Valley East and Ontario Minister of Children and Youth Services found a unique way to raise awareness of the issue. This October, Coteau painted one of his nails to participate in Polished Man, a campaign that encourages men to paint one of their five nails with nail polish to represent the one in five kids who are subject to physical or sexual violence before the age of 18. “The nail polish triggers a conversation, which leads to a question, and ultimately the difficult conversation of child abuse and what we can do to combat it,” says Coteau’s office. Local events include a paint night being held Oct. 19 at Rocky Mountain House in Renfrew. And while it’s great to talk about and recognize the issue of child abuse in October it’s important to keep the conversation going all year long. T-shirts supporting the campaign, bearing the slogan #iBREAKthesilence, are available for sale at the Family and Children’s Services offices. For more information on the campaign and various events taking place this month visit ‘Purple Ribbon Campaign Renfrew County’ on Facebook and commit to help.
Thanks for timely, important messages To the editor:
Thank you to both Vanessa Cormier and Christina Edgar for their contributions to the Sept. 28 Renfrew Mercury. Christina addressed the ‘senior-proof’ containers in her letter to the editor. This is so true! My son, at two years old, realized all he needed to do was break the container! Of course, that isn’t thankfully always a good idea. And my mother, now in her 90s, searches

for workmen to open jars or bottles. Vanessa wrote regarding the mental health care crisis. Thank you - more than words. Seeking timely, appropriate mental health care is appalling. Should the issue be a broken bone, or serious infection, the person would likely succumb. There are many empty words spoken yet no on-the-ground realities. We mourn suicides. We anger over increased health costs.
Mental health affects more and more over time and the issues often intensify. Without mental health, complete health, for both individual and community, does not exist. I am so grateful for the Robbie Dean Centre, a caring physician, and wonderful, supportive friends.

Energy East cancellation welcome news to township councillors DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
At least two area politicians are pleased by the news that Energy East won’t be going forward. The highly controversial proposal to ship 1.1-million barrels of bitumen daily from Alberta to an oil refinery in New Brunswick met with resistance from environmentalists, First Nations, and a group of outspoken Montreal area mayors. The $15.7-billion plan was to convert a natural gas pipeline and add new ones along with pumping stations. The company proposing Energy East, TransCanada, estimated the creation of 14,000 direct and indirect full-time jobs each year during development and construction. Heather Lang, a councillor with the Township of McNab/Braeside, along with council colleague Mark MacKenzie, spent more than a year studying the issue and possible local

effects. She is glad the plan is off the table. “I am pleased that Energy East has been cancelled, and felt the writing was on the wall when (U.S.) President (Donald) Trump cleared the way for the Keystone project,” Lang said in a statement. “As far as I am concerned, there’s no economic need for Energy East.” Water quality was a “huge issue” for her and felt the pipeline would put the drinking water of her residents and those living downstream from the pipe-
line, including residents of Ottawa, in “severe jeopardy” in the event of an oil spill. Township council pushed hard to convince TransCanada to move the proposed pumping station away from its proposed location on a hill overlooking the Madawaska River near the Stewartville Dam. “While we were successful, I for one was never convinced an oil spill would not happen,” Lang said. She recalled Mayor Tom Peckett saying, during a meeting attended by Trans-
Canada officials, that township residents “love their river.” She also indicated demand is shifting away from oil to renewable energy sources such as wind and sun. And that some countries are reducing their carbon emissions with economic growth. “There’s no reason why we can’t do the same,” Lang said. “This is a new world and our energies are best focused on clean energy alternatives.” The Town of Arnprior sent a letter to those overseeing the project asking for safety to be top of mind. Mayor David Reid didn’t come out for or against the proposal, saying there is limited influence a small municipality can have in national projects. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski called it loss for the economy. Along with travelling under the Bonnechere and Madawaska rivers, the pipeline would have crossed the Rideau River in Ottawa.
Mayor Jim Watson hadn’t taken a strong stance on either side, but did declare it a victory for the environment. The federal Liberal government said TransCanada made a business
decision and that the low price for oil likely played a factor. Proponents of the project say, when the government changed the approval rules via the National Energy Board, the project was effectively doomed.

GRAND ROUNDS RVH Difference inspires community leadership Laura Carter and Patty Gravelle stood before almost 150 participants and volunteers at the RVH Foundation walk/ run to promote breast cancer awareness on October 1 and shared their personal stories. The two best friends are forever linked by a journey that began with diagnoses of breast cancer, followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatments at the very same time. “Going through this together has made us twice as strong,” notes Gravelle. Because of their cancer experience, the two have decided they would like to spearhead the RVH walk/run event in the future.
“Because of the care we received here, this is something we want to continue – to give back as part of the community,” says Carter about the commitment. They both have participated in similar events in Ottawa previously. “We want to keep our fundraising dollars close to home. We have a passion for our hospital and our local community. We received top-notch care here at home in the oncology department at RVH. It’s a very special place with very caring staff and physicians,” states Gravelle. For over 30 years, Sunshine Coach has been providing transportation for people in Renfrew and area who live with mobility challenges. As the service grew from a single coach in 1985 to the fleet of 12 vehicles that are on the road every day currently, public support has been crucial to the success of the Sunshine Coach service.
The need for the service is great and continues to grow. Sunshine Coach now conducts nearly 34,000 trips annually, a volume that is 77 per cent higher than it was in 2010. Traditionally, Friends of the Disabled and Sunshine Coach have reached out for public support through a single major event. The Reach For The Rainbow Radiothon will again be hosted by Valley Heritage Radio 98.7.
Every year local businesses, service organizations, schools, churches and community minded individuals throw their support behind this service that is so critical from a quality of life perspective to all of our fellow citizens who depend on it every day. The Radiothon will take place on Sunday, Oct. 22 between the hours of 1 to 5 p.m. and will be broadcast live over Valley Heritage Radio 98.7 on the FM dial. The broadcast will be anchored
by Art Jamieson who is well known throughout the Ottawa Valley as a tireless worker for charities and who has been a perennial host of past Sunshine Coach events. The aim of the Radiothon is to raise funds to ensure that Sunshine Coach remains viable and that fares remain affordable for everyone who relies on the service every day. Pledges can be called-in to the dayof pledge line at 613-432-7299, or secure online donations can be made by

Award-winning folk musician to perform in Renfrew, Ottawa JAKE DAVIES jake.davies@metroland.com
Kate Weekes is setting up shop in Ontario and bringing her award-winning music to Renfrew on Saturday, Oct. 14. Batstone’s Northern Ramble is hosting a Songwriter’s Showcase with Dean Batstone and special guest Kate Weekes. Weekes, who grew up in Lanark County, has recently moved to Kingston after spending roughly the last 12 years based out of the Yukon. The traveller spent last winter mushing dogs in Norway, and the summer before that working as a canoe and hiking guide in northern Canada. But now that she’s back in Ontario, “I’m going to be focusing on music.” Weekes was recently honoured with the 2017 Songs From the Heart Award given out by Folk Music Ontario. She earned the songwriting award in the political category, for her song Sing it to the Hills. Weekes won’t be receiving her award until after her Renfrew concert, when she heads to Mississauga for the 31st Folk Music Ontario Conference.
“That was really exciting to find out,” Weekes told Metroland Media. “It was a bit of a confidence booster for me after making the decision to focus on music.” Weekes has five albums to her credit, two solo projects, two albums with the fiddle trio Home Sweet Home and an album with Grant Simpson. “I like playing a lot of different styles and these projects give me an outlet for that,” she said. “Now I’m collecting a body of new work. Getting to perform it live is a great way to get feedback. Sometimes, when I perform a song live, I see it in a new light, or get a new idea on how to present it.” Weekes, who has spent time in some of Canada’s most unique areas as well as travelling all over the world including Ireland, China, Norway and many other destinations, uses those experiences when crafting her music. “For the last two years I’ve kind of been backing and forthing, and couch surfing,” Weekes said. “In Norway last winter, I wrote a bunch of songs based on my experiences mushing dogs and living there. I write a lot based on my travels and life experiences.”
Weekes says her music is a lot like her experiences. “Rich and diverse,” she said. “I’ve been around folk music my entire life. I sort of grew up in it. Both my parents are folk musicians. I grew up going to music festivals. It’s kind of my culture.” Weekes says audiences can expect “a diverse range of musical styles. A mix of singer-songwriter style music, traditional jazz and a lot of storytelling.” Weekes has only been back in Ontario for two weeks, just enough time to set up a creative space and a home, but is looking forward to touring some of the music venues of eastern Ontario. “My brain is still trying to catch up to my body,” she said. “I’ve been travelling a lot the last few years, so staying still seems a little odd to me at the moment.” Weekes will be at the Batstone’s Northern Ramble on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. Weekes will be performing at the Bronson Centre on Saturday, Oct. 28 for a concert called A Gathering of Angels, a fundraiser where all proceeds go to benefit Little Angels Blood Cancer Fund. For more information on Kate Weekes and to hear some of her music, visit her website at www.kateweekes.com.

Longtin. “There’s no time to figure out how to escape your home after a fire starts. Practice an escape plan before there’s a fire so you can get out safely.” In a fire, you may have just seconds to safely escape your home. Be prepared in advance with these simple steps for home fire escape planning: • Assess the needs of everyone in your home. • Identify anyone who requires assistance to get out of the home safely, such as small children or older adults. • Make sure that you have working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm. • Identify all possible exits (doors and windows) and make sure they work. Know two ways out of all areas, if possible. • Everyone must know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Assign someone to help those who need assistance. Identify a safe meeting place outside. • Call the fire department from outside the home — from a neighbour’s home or a cellphone. • Practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year. Have everyone participate. Make changes to your plan if necessary. For more information contact the Renfrew Fire Department on 613432-2811 or fire@renfrew.ca.

STA hosts Toonie for Terry
Photos submitted
On Friday, Sept. 22 students from Susan Pasch’s Grade 2 class at St. Thomas the Apostle (STA) organized the school’s annual Toonie for Terry Fox Run/Walk. A goal of $400 was set for the students to meet. If this goal was reached, some of STA’s staff agreed to receive a pie in the face from students. Students met and surpassed this goal with an amazing grand total of $745. Quinn Brabant, above, smiles as he pies Lindsay Ireton as Pasch looks on. Left, Leah Gillian gets set to give new principal Rory Donohue his due. Liz Richards, Jennifer Spencer, and Kathleen Wilson were the other lucky “victims” who enjoyed a whipped cream pie on a very hot day.

The Purple Ribbon Campaign launches in Renfrew County October is Child Abuse Prevention Month, which is recognized publicly as the Purple Ribbon Campaign. Family Children Services of Renfrew County (FCS), the Phoenix Centre for Children and Families, and Algonquin College Waterfront Campus have combined efforts to launch this annual awareness event to remind the community that we all have a role to play in protecting our local children from abuse and neglect. The campaign’s objective is to encourage the public to speak up for kids and help raise awareness about the importance of calling Children’s Aid Society if you are concerned about the safety and well-being of a child or youth. To kick off the campaign, two events were
held, one in Renfrew and the other in Pembroke. Various smaller events are organized throughout the month, which can be viewed in detail by following the campaign’s Facebook Page @purpleribboncampaignRC. Local events include a paint night at the Rocky Mountain House in Renfrew on Oct. 19. Various schools throughout the county will be participating in at-school activities and the public is encouraged to participate by wearing purple on Oct. 24, the official Dress Purple Day. Arijana Haramincic, executive director of Family and Children’s Services states that: “We all have a role to play in ensuring that our most vulnerable, our children, are safe, well looked after and given an opportunity to build healthy and happy lives.”

Renfrew’s Frewtober pie contest results in a tie TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It was a delicious date for the second annual Town of Renfrew Frewtober Pie Contest on Thursday, Oct. 5 in Low Square. There were nine pie entries with a wide variety of pies, including: a peach pie by Claudette Lockwood, spice apple rhubarb with custard top by Hilary Packard, pumpkin pecan by Theresa Hackbarth, apple and lemon meringue by Freda Hoppin, apple crumble and pumpkin by Barbara Patzer, apple rhubarb by Emma Russell and a maple pecan by Susan Parker. Judges Jeff Scott, from Scott & Son Hardware, Renfrew Mayor Don
Eady and town staffer Karen Clemow judged all of the pies. They could not decide on a winner and declared a tie between Hoppin’s lemon pie and defending champion Patzer’s apple crumble pie. “I just wanted to do it for fun and Canada 150,” said Hoppin. “And my husband says I make the best pies.” Patzer used two different kinds of apples and wasn’t planning on defending her title until someone encouraged her to do it. “I just love baking and I’m in absolute shock I won again,” said Patzer. The women split the winning prize: a $100 gift certificate from Downtown Renfrew BIA and they both decided to donate their prize to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation.

What kind of wheel drive do you want? Choosing a vehicle based on wheel drive Several factors are considered before drivers purchase new vehicles. Wheel drive may not be the first such factor to come to mind, but it can be an important consideration when car shopping. Despite the considerable rise in popularity of sport utility vehicles, automotive expert Edmunds says most passenger cars sold in the United States today use a twowheel-drive system. With options such as 4WD, AWD, FWD and RWD, consumers should understand the differences of each type of drive in order to make the most informed decision.
Apart from passenger seating, horsepower and color, wheel drive should be a consideration when car shopping.
Light the way for safer nighttime driving (MS) — Few drivers may understand the importance of maintaining their vehicles’ headlights, and just how compromised they and their passengers might be when driving with old, dimming or foggy headlamps. Headlight bulbs don’t just burn out overnight. As bulbs age, their light output gradually reduces due to use and factors such as humidity, electrical resistance and filament fa-
tigue. Drivers concerned about the efficacy of their headlight bulbs can take steps to improve their visibility when driving at night. • Accept your own vulnerability. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision. • Learn to recognize headlamp clouding. Clouded headlamps often appear hazed and yellow and reduce headlight output considerably. • Restore clouded headlamps.

Clouded headlamps do not necessarily need to be replaced. • Drivers whose vehicles are equipped with standard halogen headlights may be surprised to learn that such lights typically begin to break down within two to three years of installation, during Front-wheel drive which time light output might be The National Motorists Association reduced by as much as 30 percent. 4-wheel-drive & All-wheel-drive 4WD is designed for rugged, off-road applications and AWD is for pavement driving. Pure 4WD is good for low-traction situations off of pavement, where additional grip is needed. In some 4WD vehicles, this drive needs to be engaged through a transfer switch. In such automobiles, the vehicle operates in FWD or RWD until that switch is engaged. All-wheel-drive provides the best of FWD, RWD and pure 4WD systems. The main advantage is excellent traction on both dry pavement and in poor weather. Some AWD vehicles may be able to go off-roading as well. Potential disadvantages to AWD include cost, vehicle weight and, because there are more components in AWD, more parts can fail and require servicing. AWD typically comes in partand full-time versions. Choosing a wheel drive requires an understanding of how one plans to use the vehicle and which attributes are most important.

Rear-wheel drive With rear-wheel drive, the power goes to the back wheels to drive the vehicle. This used to be the system of choice because RWD systems were relatively easy to manufacture, offers Kelly Blue Book. RWD is the choice for many trucks because added load can offer additional traction in the back. Furthermore, rearwheel drive is coveted for sporty vehicles and luxury cars. That’s because, as vehicles accelerate the weight is transferred to the rear wheel, enhancing traction and further acceleration. This drive also distributes weight more evenly, so cornering and handling is better.
day, is cheaper to design and build than RWD. Fewer parts mean the drivetrain is easier to install. It is also less heavy than others, helping vehicles to be lighter and consume less fuel. In rain and snow, FWD has excellent traction, so it’s an asset under poor weather conditions. Front-wheel drive vehicles are not prized for their handling because the front wheels have to put power to the ground and steer the car. Furthermore, unlike RWD, which is more rugged and durable, FWD is more fragile.

Plan your fall foliage excursion Autumn means different things to many people. Students may embrace the dawn of a new school year, while others might embrace the crisp weather after a season of heat. One of the more widely enjoyed aspects of autumn is the chance to take in the brilliant foliage. Although New England may be renowned for its bright, orange, red and yellow panoramas, dazzling displays of foliage can be witnessed anywhere temperatures descend enough for deciduous trees to shed their leaves. The first step to a successful fall foliage excursion is to find the right spot. The Catskill and Adirondack Mountains of New York, Amish Country in Pennsylvania, the Great Lakes from Michigan to Ohio, and
many other areas can be great places to witness nature at its most colorful. To make the most of fall foliage road trips, drivers can keep the following suggestions in mind. • Get off the highway. To see great fall vistas, take a detour from major thoroughfares and visit small towns and mountain passes. Invest in some maps, as cellular networks may be inaccessible in remote locales. • Avoid tourist-heavy areas. Drivers may prefer less crowded roadways to accompany the great scenery. Such drivers should visit areas that are not tourist meccas. Any area that plays home to forests and sprawling landscapes will do. • Go on foot. To get the best photos, head out at sunrise or sunset. Soft, golden light dap-
pled by leaves will bring out the golden tones in photos. Going on foot will help you discover the nuances of the season and slow down for a change. • Don’t overlook overcast days. Traveling in the rain may not be fun, but overcast days might be ideal. On such days, the sun won’t be too warm and drown out the colors. • Bring along binoculars. Wildlife is often mobile and abundant in the fall, as animals scurry to feed and gather supplies before the winter. As a result, autumn is a great time to spot wildlife that’s normally hiding in thickets and woodland areas. • Plan for stops along the way. Don’t forget to bring some spending money in the form of cash so that you can enjoy the

Off-road driving is a fun hobby for many drivers. Such driving requires more than turning the wheel and seeking adventure. Knowledge of how to traverse unpaved roadways and having the proper equipment can help off-roading enthusiasts avoid pitfalls. Anyone new to off-roading should know the basics, but even experienced off-roading enthusiasts can benefit from brushing up on their skills.
slippery conditions in areas that might already have been traversed. Climbing hills can be tricky, and crossing deep water, descending hills and crossing ditches is also challenging. Knowing to cross ditches at an angle, avoid braking when descending hills and skip fastmoving water until you are more experienced comes with time and probably some trial and error.
Equipment A vehicle equipped to traverse unpaved roads is a necessity. Although many SUVs and trucks are promoted for outdoor living, many need some modifications to handle the rigor of offroading. While aftermarket experts can help motorists prepare their vehicles for off-road excursions, drivers should know that the wheelbase and clearance of their vehicles may need to be adjusted. Modifying traction control, choosing the right tires (and possibly lowering the air pressure for more grip) and determining if axle strength is sufficient are additional considerations. Engines might need to be tuned for slower speeds. In addition, vulnerable parts under the hood and under the vehicle may need to be treated for muddy or especially dusty conditions.
Speed One thing that can take some time to adjust to when off-road driving is slowing down. Navigating tricky terrain means slowing down considerably. Speed can be the enemy because reaction time is greatly diminished when off-roading. Slowing down means being able to gauge obstacles and focus on surroundings — including wildlife — more readily. According to Popular Mechanics, much of off-roading takes place in low gear. Use four-wheel drive or, for AWD vehicles, lock the center differential early on for maximum control.
Skills Choosing the right off-road route is key, especially for novices. This means avoiding obstacles such as trees or rocks. The presence of existing tire tracks may help, but drivers should still anticipate muddy ruts or
Extra gear Off-roaders are bound to get stuck from time to time. Recovery gear, such as towing straps, mats to place under stuck tires, hiking survival gear, and flares, can help in emergency situations. A day off-roading on trails or in rural terrain can be an enjoyable way to spend time, but such driving requires skill and practice.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, a newfound commitment to living healthy will benefit you in the short- and long-terms. Keep up the good work and enlist others to help you stay motivated.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, a renewed passion for a hobby has motivated you to be more creative. Embrace this newfound vigor, even enlisting others if you so desire.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, racing through all of your activities will get you somewhere fast, but the results may be sloppy. Slow down and see the bigger picture.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, others trust your instincts when it comes to making big decisions. Follow your heart and explain your thought process along the way so loved ones feel in the loop.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, if you continue to vacillate on a decision, pretty soon you will begin to doubt your decision-making abilities. Trust your intuition.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, allow others to explain their position before you make an important decision. Outside input can give you a more well-rounded perspective.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, embrace a newly presented challenge as an opportunity to hone your skills and illustrate to others your abilitiy to adapt and thrive. Your efforts won’t go unnoticed.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Taking everything onto your shoulders is one way to get noticed, Cancer. But it’s also a way to burn out. When others offer to lighten your load, take them up on it.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
CLUES ACROSS
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, if you have a gut feeling about something but not much tangible proof to back up your suspicions, use your intuition as a guide. It seldom leads you astray.

Renfrew Curling Club juniors at Roar of the Rings ANDY SKLEPOWICZ AND MARG DAWSON Renfrew Curling Club
Most leagues have now started or have made the ice available for practice or pick-up games and even the Ladies of Leisure, aka afternoon ladies, have finally pulled themselves off their lounge chairs and away from late summer mojitos long enough to throw a few rocks; but the more strenuous side of curling, sweeping, will have to wait for another week. The competitive Monday Night set teams league has now reached 15 teams and counting and once again top teams beg, borrow and steal to improve their chances. Rob Warren picks off Rory MacKay from Gary Smith’s crew and drops Joe who now fills Andy Sklepowicz’s new foursome with new addition Marg Dawson. Gary turns around and “borrows” Andy Miller from a surprised Brian Yolkowskie who is now trying to fill two spots as Phil
Marcella has also left and formed his own team. Another new entry is the team of Matt Forrest which features a young guns lineup that looks very good on paper. You would think that more was at stake than bragging rights of championships that no one can remember who won the following year. The ladies as usual refrain from such shenanigans and hold steady for another year. Wednesday Skins is still looking for players. So, if you haven’t signed up yet or are looking for an extra night to curl just call Marg Dawson 613-432-7445. And from the junior end of the curling spectrum at our club, news comes that Tammy Wall will be co-ordinating the junior curlers this year. A former Renfrew Curling Club Junior provincial level curler Tammy will bring her extensive knowledge and enthusiasm to this growing part of the club. Tammy reports that three of our junior
curlers, Shanna Beauchamp, Hannah Cameron and Calen St Denis, qualified to be a junior star for the Roar of the Rings. They will be a part of the 72 junior curlers’ contingent from the Ottawa Valley region who will receive a unique opportunity at the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials in Ottawa from Dec. 2 to 10. The junior curlers are the winners of the Ottawa Valley Curling Association (OVCA) Future Stars program. The 72 junior curlers – one for every player on the nine men and women’s teams competing at the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings in the Canadian Tire Centre. OVCA Future Stars will be matched with their curlers after the final two teams for each gender have been selected through the Home Hardware Road to the Roar Pre-Trials from Nov. 6 to 12 in Summerside, P.E.I. If you’re interested in youth curling, contact the club.

Historical society revisits last county hanging BROMLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Was the murderer really guilty? Was the murder victim as innocent as believed? The trial that resulted in the last hanging in Renfrew County will be depicted by Bryan Hendry, former journalist and current senior policy adviser to the Chiefs of Ontario, at the next Bromley Historical Society meeting. It will take place on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Old Town Hall, 498 Micksburg Rd., Osceola. Mr. Hendry’s talk will draw on his book, Reasonable Doubt, published in 1995. Hendry came across the story of the murder while looking through the archives FOR SALE

of The Eganville Leader, where he was working. It grabbed his attention and he read all the Renfrew County papers that covered the crime. Eventually, with assistance from then-Renfrew County MPP Sean Conway, he obtained permission to access the trial records in the Ontario Archives. “The murder case gripped the Valley in 1951,” Hendry said in a recent interview. “It was frontpage news across the province. It was the third murder of a taxi driver in the county in six years. And the lawyer for Lloyd Wise, the accused, was the well-known Renfrew lawyer James Maloney.” The post-war years, he went on to explain, were difficult times.

Men had returned from the war and many had difficulty finding employment. It was the post-Prohibition period when there was a lot of heavy drinking, yet liquor was not easily accessible. The murder victim, Lloyd Barber, was a taxi driver who frequently made runs for clients to the nearest liquor store, which at that time was in Eganville. He also had a reputation as being a womanizer. Barber was found in his bathroom in Killaloe on April 13, with lipstick on his shirt, evidence of recent sexual activity, and shallow cuts on his face and body. He had bled to death. Lloyd Wise, a resident of Golden Lake, was arFOR SALE

rested in Hamilton. He was wearing one of Barber’s suits and had traded in Barber’s car to a used car lot in Hamilton. Maloney presented the argument that as Wise was a strapping man, he would have inflicted deeper cuts. He asserted that the wounds could have been inflicted by a woman. The jury found Wise guilty. Maloney appealed the decision but it was dismissed. Come and learn more about this fascinating story of Renfrew County history. Copies of Mr. Hendry’s book will be on sale. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served following the presentation. FOR SALE

OTTAWA VALLEY BAHA’IS
Baha’is and their friends in the Ottawa Valley and around the world are preparing for the bicentennial celebration of the birth of the Prophet-Founder of the Baha’i faith, named Baha’u’llah (Glory of God), on Oct. 22. Condemned as a heretic, He revealed to the world modern, progressive social and spiritual principles that will ultimately lead to the unity of the world’s people, whether from the East or the West. His message followed that of a personage named the Bab (Gate) whose mission was to bring freshness and purity to religions that had become corrupt. The Bab was martyred in 1850. His birth is celebrated on Oct. 21, the day immediately preceding the celebration of the Birth of Baha’u’llah. Since the beginning of the Baha’i Era with the Bab’s Declaration in 1844, the Baha’i Faith has spread around the globe with more than seven million adherents who work with their fellow men on a path of service to humanity, promoting the organic unity of the human race. Baha’u’llah taught that only by establishing unity will peace be possible. The Baha’i teachings offer an important key to understanding the confusion and perplexities of our present age. Just as adolescence is a turbulent and rebellious time of life, humanity is currently passing through a painful, transitional age. This age of transition is marked by the passage from excessive nationalism and state sovereignty to a wider recognition of global interdependence, internationalism and world citizenship. The offering of these teachings for the healing of the nations is one of the main reasons that Baha’is and their friends around the world will rejoice in the celebration of the Births of the Bab and Baha’u’llah on Oct. 21 and 22.

Could this be the end of the fall colours?
Michael Runtz
In leaves, as the green veil of chlorophyll begins to break down, the colours hidden beneath (as in this Red Maple) are revealed.
Walk with Charles Macnamara at the 2017 Macnamara Banquet KAREN RUNTZ
Lord of the Rings has walking trees. Game of Thrones has walking gods of ice. But did you know that Arnprior has its own real-life walking legends? One is a colony of rare “rock walkers” — walking ferns that live and breathe today. Another is field naturalist extraordinaire Charles “Charlie” Macnamara, who found and photographed the ferns in the early 1900s while walking from town to his cabin at Marshall’s Bay. Macnamara’s steps would have taken him in the vicinity of what is now the Macnamara Trail and where, in this century, its #6 stop marks these rare ferns over a large rock cavern favoured by porcupines. Imagine if you could meet “Charlie” and see many of the orchids, birds and insects he spotted on his solitary journeys. And what if you had acclaimed naturalist, author and photographer Michael Runtz as your natural history guide?
The opportunity is yours for the taking on Nov. 4 when the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ hold their 2017 banquet, featuring The Nature of Charles Macnamara. Members of the public are welcome to attend the event, which will be held at the Sand Point Golf Club. One caveat: all tickets must be purchased in advance. Attendees can also count on good fun, well-prepared food, door prizes and one or more auction items. Note that the banquet is at a new venue this year — the Sand Point Golf Club, 38 Golf Club Road, Braeside, Ontario. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m. Keep in mind that tickets will not be available at the door. The ticket price of $35 per person applies up to midnight, Oct. 27, and payment must be received by the club by that date. Tickets for children 11 and under are available at a special price of $15. Buy your tickets at the Arnprior Public Library, the Arnprior McNabBraeside Archives, or purchase them online at mfnc.ca.
With the arrival of autumn predictably come a number of natural history phenomena. Moose enter their breeding season, the rut. The night sky becomes crisp and clear, with the aurora borealis wildly dancing across it. And forests turn into visual extravaganzas with an explosion of fall colours. The Ottawa Valley and Algonquin Park are famous for this annual event, the third week of September usually bringing the peak of the colour. Brilliant red, orange, and yellow dominates when maples change their colour. Actually, reveal their colour might be more appropriate, for most of the brilliant fall hues are present in the leaves all summer long. They are unseen because they are hidden under the green mask of chlorophyll, the driver of the leaves’ sugar-producing factories. Most bright colours arise from pigments called carotenoids. Rich yellows and oranges of Sugar Maple leaves are due to carotenoids, as they are those colours in bananas and Yellow Warblers, and oranges and Baltimore Orioles. However, the co-
lour red is different. Red leaves (and crimson and purple) are due to anthocyanin, a pigment manufactured when the chlorophyll begins to break down. Anthocyanin generates heat, which helps prolong the life of leaves as trees start reclaiming some of the sugars locked in their leaves that would otherwise be lost when they fall to the ground. The colourful show is a product of the preparation that trees undergo in response to winter’s approach. To survive extremely cold temperatures, trees must become cold hardy. Cold hardiness involves changes to cellular structure, and the internal movement of water and sugars. These processes prevent ice from forming inside the cells, which would be fatal, while the formation of ice crystals between the cells is tolerated. After all of the modifications are complete, trees can survive temperatures as low as -80 ºC! It takes time for trees to become cold hardy. It is a two-stage process, the first being initiated by the change in photoperiod (the amount of light between sunrise and sunset). The sec-

ond and final stage involves exposure to cold but not freezing temperatures (between 0ºC and 10ºC). It is the second stage of acclimation that accelerates the appearance of leaf colour including anthocyanin reds. This year by early September male Red Maples were already turning brilliant red (female Red Maples turn yellow) and an extremely rich display of fall colours was forecast. But then things went awry. Unexpected extraordinarily hot, sunny, and dry conditions persisted for weeks. As a result, hardwood trees became heat and drought stressed, and in response, their leaves turned brown and began to fall off. In mere weeks we went from anticipating a spectacular show of fall colours to being witness to one of the most subdued displays seen in decades. With climate change, warmer conditions in the autumn are predicted to dominate in the years to come. Without cool temperatures to kickstart their preparation for winter, maples and other hardwoods may never again produce those rich colours that we have so very much enjoyed in years gone by. Could the disappearance of fall colours be the canary in a coalmine? The Nature email is mruntz@start. ca

Mystery relative Ethel unexpectedly cuts her intended lengthy visit short Ethel was just one of the many people who came to visit the farm in Northcote, and no one was ever sure how she was connected to the family. The first time she came, suitcase in hand, Father said he never saw her before in his life. And certainly Mother, who hadn’t been on the farm that long, didn’t know who she was either. However, she came bag and baggage one day in the early Fall, claiming to be related on Father’s side of the family. She wasn’t about to give particulars, just saying, “we’re kin you know...and we go way back.” Ethel claimed to live in Pembroke. But Father said he was pretty sure he didn’t have any relatives there. However, none of that seemed to matter. Ethel was here, and she planned on staying. I was delighted. I loved company. The only problem was my sister Audrey and I had to give up our bed, and sleep on the creton couch in the kitchen. It was too narrow to sleep side by
side, so we had to sleep foot to foot, which didn’t please Audrey one bit. It was soon pretty obvious to everyone Ethel hadn’t spent much time on a farm before coming out to Northcote. It was a warm day for Fall, and Mother had the kitchen window wide open, looking out onto the grape arbour. When we sat down for supper, Ethel wondered what that strong smell was. We all looked at Father. He took his merry time to reply, chewing what he had in his mouth first. “That’s plain manure. We spread it out on the fields. What did you say your name was again?” “It’s Ethel, as you well know, Albert. And does that smell go away?” Father said, “Yes, when the snow comes.” Ethel just picked at her food, and more than once took her hanky out of her sleeve and covered her nose, pretending to wipe. And then there was the question of the Gerry pot under her bed. She had two choices, use it when

Well, Ethel decided she had better get back to Pembroke, and if Father would just drive her to the station, she’d be on her way. To me, he seemed only too delighted to oblige. Her long-stay visit lasted exactly one day and one night. When Father got back, Mother wondered how the old gobbler got out of the pen. Father blew smoke out of his pipe, pushed his straw hat to the back of his head, and said, “I knew that old bird would be useful some day. Even the turkey hens will have nothing to do with him. And he must have figured out how to open the pen gate all on his own.” And he threw back his head and laughed. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books?
