Renfrew Hydro rates could be going up. However, less than 10 members of the public showed up to a meeting hosted by the Ontario Energy Board to learn about Renfrew Hydro’s application Oct. 6 at Renfrew’s Days Inn. Bill Nippard, president of Renfrew Hydro, said they were anREGION REGION ticipating more people. “I think people in general are happy with their local distribution. They are not happy with the price of electricity per kilowatt, which isn’t controlled by the local distribution company,” said Nippard after the meeting. .COM During the presentation he explained the proposal. .CA “What we are looking for in our application is about $3.19 (increase per month) for the average residential customer who uses 750 kilowatt. That’s an average, some people use more and some use less, but on average most customers are 750 kilowatt hours per month,” said Nippard. “We are looking for a nine per cent increase on the delivery portion only. We are looking for $270,000 above the 2010 revenue, which was the last time we did a cost of service application for Renfrew Hydro and the effective date is Jan. 1, 2017.” Ted Antonopoulos, director of rates for the Ontario Energy Board, emphasized they have been putting more focus on customer input in the process and it is now required for the utility to include it in their application. Renfrew Hydro held two days of public consultations on April 26 and 27 and over the two days 13 people attended. Antonopoulos explained the board’s purpose is to keep things balanced. “We try to keep prices low but ensure the utility can operate at reliable and adequate levels,” Antonopoulos said. Antonopoulos said the purpose of the meeting was to explain how customers can provide input, including submitting letters to the board online or via mail. Push for Change: cross-country trek arrives in Renfrew Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

A shopping cart being pushed down the street by a homeless person is a powerful image. Just imagine what message is sent when a former homeless youth turned successful businessman is the one behind the cart. Joe Roberts has set out on a mission using the shopping cart as a symbol of change. His walk across Canada to support the end of youth homelessness will take 517 days and 9,000 kilometres, with 400 community events in all 10 provinces and the three territories. His journey included three kilometres in Renfrew. On day 151, Roberts, who is the executive director for The Push For Change, brought his inspiring message to Renfrew youth at the RCAF Wing on Sept. 28. “It’s an initiative that we kind of cooked up on how we could engage Canadians in a conversation on what we could do to prevent and reduce youth homelessness,” said Roberts. “In 1989 I was on the streets of Vancouver. I got a second chance, I had really great community support. I had support from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and a mom who wouldn’t quit. I got a second chance, went to drug rehab, back to college

TIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND

The Push For Change stopped in Renfrew on Sept. 28 during its 9,000km and 17-month trek across Canada. Joe Roberts, centre right, is pushing a shopping cart across Canada to raise awareness and dollars to end youth homelessness, with Mayor Don Eady and Coun. Tom Sidney, far right. and within 12 years I went from a young person with very low probability of success to finding myself as a celebrated Canadian entrepreneur.”

IT’S BACK! We’ve got the GO ahead

He says he was unfulfilled as he was living the Canadian version of the American dream. “There’s still something missing

and I made a promise back when I was in Vancouver that if I ever got off the streets I would do something to pay it forward,” said Roberts. “So we start having a conversation how

do you engage Canadians, how you raise awareness, how do you inspire Canadians to think differently about a very difficult issue.” A friend of his told him when Canadians want to raise awareness for things they walk across the country. “I said I’m 45 years and I don’t feel like running across the country,” said Roberts, but his friend had a suggestion. “I got a better idea, why don’t you push a shopping cart? It is a symbol of chronic homelessness, the thing you are trying to avoid. I was sort of smitten by that idea and so we began planning and that was five years ago.” His journey started on May 1, when he began walking 24 kilometres every day and on Sept. 22 he arrived in Ontario. “I was met by our community safety partner the OPP and the world’s greatest hockey dad Walter Gretzky and on day 149 we reached Parliament Hill,” said Roberts. “We were notified that we’re actually going to be in the House on Oct. 25 when a declaration is going to be read in support of Push For Change.” Along the way he is having conversations with not only youth but municipal stakeholders, companies, law enforcement, educators, and health care and children’s aid officials See RURAL, page 4

She was the marketing and sponsorship chair for the International Plowing Match and was one of the chairs on the organizing committee for the Men’s Curling Tankard in Smiths Falls. She started out in dentistry but realized it was not for her and went to work in her family’s construction business. She went back to school, completing a two-year travel and tourism program and has also taken some project management courses.

“So there’s been a lot of background for me and I’m able to attribute that to my successes because I can pull it all together and have a clear understanding of practice of business,” said Leach. She said as soon as she arrived in Renfrew she realized there were a lot of great community projects already underway such as the downtown revitalization project and the recreation master plan. velopment of the corporate website to Running Tide Inc. for $19,950), deliver a community ambassador program, develop a land survey and create data sheets related to the economic profile in the community. Leach is from Lanark County but has a wide breadth of experience when it comes to economic development. She has worked in southern Ontario in economic development roles split between two municipalities and in Western Canada.

“About what we need to do to protect people and prevent homelessness from happening. I was a good kid from a good family from a town just like this but I came from a family conflict that I couldn’t live with and left home at 15,” explained Roberts. “Shortly thereafter I left school and so the two big pillars of support in my life gone, and quickly I cycled out and showed up on the streets of Vancouver.” He thinks because it is a known problem it can be addressed. “If it’s predictable, it’s preventable and so when I step back and said ‘How can I lend my voice in a transparent way to this national issue and point to the particular pieces that we need to improve on to support young people’s transition into adulthood?’ Push for Change gave us a backdrop to have that conversation with Canadians,” said Roberts. The trip across Canada is also a fundraiser with a goal set at $17,000 or 50 cents from every Canadian, which will support Raising the Roof, to fund The Upstream Project – a school-based prevention framework to end youth homelessness.

When it comes to rural homelessness and the current situation in Renfrew County, he admitted he did not know specifics but was able to speak on the topic in general. “Rural homelessness is very much invisible, it’s one of those things that’s unseen,” said Roberts. “That young people or older people, they are couch surfing or they are living in poverty or the living environments that are not conducive to growth and functionality. So there’s a stifling and an inability to break that cycle whether it’s poverty, whether it’s mental health, whether it’s trauma, whether it’s addictions. It becomes very difficult and then there’s this notion of if I don’t see it in public I don’t walk down the street and see somebody sleeping on a piece of cardboard then you don’t have that issue and so it’s a public mindset but it’s also a municipal government mindset sometimes that I don’t see it it’s not here and it’s very much here.” Renfrew Coun. Tom Sidney, who works as a youth counselor in his day job, agrees with Roberts. “It’s hard to pinpoint stats because it is not seen like in the big cities,” said Sidney. “It becomes hidden

homelessness, it’s the couch surfing and the things you don’t see. It does exist.” When asked what kind of advice he would give a youth today, Roberts recalled a story from 1989. “A man named Gus came up to me and at the time I was disheveled, had dirty hair, layered old clothes and looked I looked homeless,” said Roberts. “He put his hand on my shoulder and he said ‘Joe, on the exterior you don’t look good, but on the inside you’re an incredible human being. There’s more you can see inside every single one of us despite their circumstances but things that happened to us and happening around us. The things that have been said to us or the things we say to ourselves, underneath all of that is something absolutely extraordinary, the only way we find what that is to get in action,’ so I advise anybody young or old find something that you’re passionate about in your life and it begins to unfold in an incredibly way, but we have to have the courage to take those steps.” For more information or to follow his journey across the country visit: http://www.thepushforchange.com/.

Falun Gong members seek council support to stop organ harvesting in China Tiffany Lepack

A small group of demonstraters, Hanyu Liu, Grace Dai, Hongyan Lu and Ling Yu Zhang, gather at Low Square in Renfrew on Oct. 3 to urge town council and residents to help them stop the forced organ harvest of Falun Gong members in China.

tlepack@metroland.com

A daughter is still waiting to hear from her mother, as she is held captive for practising her religious beliefs in China. “It’s pretty sad,” said Hongyan Lu, in front of Renfrew Town Hall on Oct. 4. “We can’t get any updates on her.” Lu and her husband Jay Brauneisen, who is from the Ottawa Valley, drove from Edmonton to Ottawa this summer to share her story and raise awareness of the fate of many Falun Gong (also Falun Dafa) practitioners in her former country. She said her mother was “abducted” by police while visiting other Falun Dafa practitioners in Shijiazhuang City. The movement has grown quickly over a short period to include tens of millions who perform spiritual meditation movements similar to tai chi while exercising their beliefs in “truthfulness, compassion and tolerance.” The government - which officially is communist hence atheistic - calls it a cult holding superstitious beliefs. Her mother was taken in June, around the same time an update report by the activists estimated between 60,000 and 100,000 prisoners of conscience, primarily Falun Dafa members, are killed in China each year for forced organ harvesting. Her mother’s case is just one of millions taking place in China. They estimate that before the persecution started there were approximately 70 to 100 million people practising Falun Gong. Now families are being torn apart because of this. Lu and her family are working with lawyers to try and help her mother. “We are trying to get a lawyer to my mother but they have said she cannot speak to a lawyer until they start the ‘legal process,’ said Lu on Oct. 4 on the legal struggles they are facing. Her mother started practicing Falun Dafa in 1998 while searching for a way to improve her health. She suffered from hepatitis B, cirrhosis, stomach problems and endometriosis. Lengthy hospitalizations and long-term medication were gone after a few months practising Falun Dafa, Lu said. “After practising Falun Dafa, both my mother and I benefited from better health and a positive, righteous mindset,” she said. “If the persecution had never started, I could have had a very happy family life and stayed close to my parents and relatives. “My story is only one of millions of practitioners’ families like mine who fell apart because of the persecution.” The small group was set to present a package to the mayor after they were finished their demonstration. Grace Dai hopes the town will support their fight. “We have prepared a suggested resolution for council if they can pass it to stop the forced organ harvesting in China,” said Dai. She is also hoping to gain support from residents. “The help is moral support,” said Dai. “That’s what people can do in small towns, the grassroots support.” Similar resolutions have been passed by the United States House of Representatives, the European Parliament and the Canadian Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development. - with files from Derek Dunn

Town explores town hall options Sept. 27, Renfrew council approved a staff recommendation to commission Environmental Engineering Consultants Ltd. to complete a preliminary design and space analysis at 127 Raglan St. (town hall) costing $5,500 in preparation for when the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) leave the building in mid-December. “It is very important to have this done for the building,” said Eady. Sidney added that with the OPP leaving it will change the landscape of the building. “It is going to have a bit of a shift,” said Sidney. “We have no choice, we have to ensure it’s done right.”

Renfrew’s Meals on Wheels celebrates 40th anniversary Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Being able to stay in your home when you age is a remarkable gift. Helping residents of Renfrew do this for 40 years is something to celebrate. The Meals on Wheels 40th anniversary was marked on Sept. 30 at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital at a special tea with a number of local volunteers on hand. The program started in 1976 by Dr. Ron Lavigne and Elizabeth Frank, a dietitian at the hospital who saw a need in the community. As Lavigne is a Rotarian, the Rotary Club of Renfrew has been involved since the start. Lavigne shared the story of the first delivery of the program to a former mayor who told them to leave because there was too much food for a mid-day meal. He also shared the story of meals getting delivered after a snow storm through the determination of local taxi driver Vera Forrest. “The stories are amazing and the community has been so supportive,” said Lavigne. “It has been my way to give back to the community and the real reason I am so glad to be a Rotarian.” He noted the program provides nourishing hot meals at a very low cost but it also helps to keep people in their own homes and gives peace of mind to their families because it means someone is going to the home and checking on the client. Randy Penney, president and chief administrator for the hospital, agrees. “I think anything that we can do to keep individuals in their home and supported is just a great thing and this program has done that for 40 years,” said Penney. Pam Cranfield has been the director of food services at the hospital for 28 years and has seen the number of clients grow over the years and she still goes out and makes deliveries when needed. “I realize when I go out it’s critical program because you see people that would not be in their own homes if we weren’t there delivering a hot meal to them,” said Cranfield. Currently the program delivers meals to 18 clients within the town limits and there are usually between 21 to 26 clients using the service, including hospice patients. Meals are delivered seven days a week and they offer regular and special diet needs (for example diabetic, renal, lower sodium and texture modified, serving the clients the same food that is served in the hospital to patients and in the cafeteria.) In 1990 the cost of a meal was $2.50, in 2001 it was $5 and last year it was $7, which includes soup, meat, potato, vegetables and a dessert. Over the last 24 years, 113,961 meals have been served to members of our community. Meals on Wheels client Harry Hanniman spoke very highly of the program in a prepared statement. “To me, at 91 years old, it’s a good thing. It helps me stay at home,” said Hanniman, who lives alone. “I like the people who deliver the food. They’re friendly and always take time to talk to me.” Volunteers delivering the meals have been key to the success of the program as it can take almost two hours to deliver all of the meals. Rotary members are responsible for delivering meals two days a week also helping out are the Monday Elves, Community Living, Hospital Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus and Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church. Penney acknowledged Cranfield and all of the staff that has worked hard over the years and everyone else that is such an important part of this whole program. “The backbone of this whole program are the volunteers that drive, it’s not just the delivery of the meal,” said Penney. “It’s the social interaction that they have with the client. I think it’s just a great part of the program.”

Natasha Goulet, has been a Rotarian for 13 years and has been a volunteer driver for the program since she joined. “We see a lot of people, but there are always new faces,” said Goulet. “They are always very happy to see us because for some of them it is the only communication they get all day.” She also shared some of her delivery adventures, including one person who answered the door not wearing anything. Rest in peace

PETER DEWOLF 1953-2016

We at Metroland Media were shocked and saddened to learn of the recent death of veteran Ottawa Valley journalist Peter DeWolf. A husband and father, 63-yearold DeWolf succumbed to liver cancer Oct. 4. DeWolf, who worked at My-FM Radio for the past almost 10 years, is also being remembered fondly as a veteran reporter for several area newspapers, including the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide. DeWolf was known for his hardhitting style. He asked the tough questions, wasn’t afraid to make waves, liked to stir the pot all qualities that made him a passionate and respected journalist. His memory will live on through his work, through the stories we fondly recall and through his family. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Quarter of a million dollars wasted To the editor:

A quarter of a million dollars wasted. Granted, it’s only 0.4 per cent of a $64 million budget, but it’s still money wasted, an example of bureaucrats throwing money at a problem in order to rectify a long-standing situation of poor math instruction. Years ago, I failed a senior chemistry three page solution because the answer was a mass value greater than the known mass of the entire universe. Students were given the problem to calculate the mass of water to extinguish the Hagersville tire fire. Calculations were to be based on enthalphy/heats of reaction. That excellent student had no idea how far out of this world their answer really was. Students have long been exposed to inconsistent math skills, a situation that requires no money at all to change. I offer a half dozens idea at no cost to Renfrew County school boards and any parent. Teach students to count at a glance: Start by holding up two fingers for a second, the aim is to be able to look at a flock of geese in flight and know there are 63 geese in that formation. Use your camera-phone to verify your count. Learn and add in Chinese: The Chinese language expresses numbers differently, thus allowing oriental students to early math skills in INSIDE

advance of acquire English-speaking students. When adding 73 plus 55 a Chinese student adds 7 ten 3 plus 5 ten 5 to get 12 ten 8 ie 128. You can expand this simple concept to add 4317 = 5281 in your head. If a student can add a single integers (3+4 =7.) They can add any two values in their mind. Success breeds confidence and confidence breeds’ success. Why make simple math so hard (87 + 34 = ?) because of language. Times tables: We taught students the multiplication table from 1 x 1 to 10 x 10. Why stop there? Why not continue to 100 x 100? I still remember memorizing the table. Wow! What a sense of intellectual power it game me. Not every answer is correct: Advanced calculus generates multiple answers. Some answers are of value others are not. Simpler math like square roots also generate multiple answers. The square root of a 90.0 metre squared yard is a plus of negative value of 9.48. If that answer represents the dimension of one side, the negative value is inadmissible as there are no negative dimensions in my background. Just as you cannot submit an answer of 486371.42 if the units are atoms, peoples or black holes. Sign posts: This is what generates good number sense. A collection of mathematical reference points to which all answers can be compared.

Teachers spend too much time teaching mathematical operations which they fail to associate with the reality of a child’s universe. I learned matrix multiplication in high school and still do not know how it applies to the universe I live in. Sign posts help one to find ones’ way through new territory ie turn right at James Street. Numerically what are they dimensions of the smallest know object in the universe? What is the size of the universe itself ? What is the mass of a black hole or a glass of water? What is the fastest velocity possible? What is the value of pi or the sine of 60 °? Those educators who claim all this data can be looked up failed to understand how the mind works. We are not born with an area of brain devoted to language and math, rather, we hijack and reprogram brain sectors. The more language and math we process the better our brain functions, so we actually use less brain as we get better. We also use different brain depending on the language we speak/think. Sign posts, in your brain, will keep your thinking from going astray. Music and math: Learning to play music improves math skills. Early activity improves both. Sitting on your ass in front of a screen improves the onset of obesity, diabetes and hypertension – period! Pay mathematicians to teach math: I taught high school science and some math

for 26 years. It was only in the last six years that we had one ‘math’ teacher on staff with a mathematics degree. That is important because a real mathematician knows how ‘messy’ math really is. It’s a reflection of how creative minds work and ‘math’ is one of the most abstract creative things the mind does. The curriculum tries to teach ‘math’ as a highly organized logical process, appealing to the wrong brain hemisphere. It is taught this way to teachers will find it easier to evaluate students work. It’s the equivalent of asking an art student to start painting in the top left corner of the canvas, then working left to right, top to bottom finishing the last brush stroke in the bottom corner. That’s why you see equating scrawled all over a blackboard in Albert Einstein’s office. If the sight of messy math scares you, always remember what Albert said, “If you think your problems are hard, they are nothing compared to mine.” Einstein was not a particularly good mathematician but thankfully he allowed his creativity to persevere and we now understand our universe far better because of those efforts. P.S. None of these suggestions requires any technology at all. What it requires is a new mind set on the part of the bureaucrats and teachers.

Migrating birds stop to refuel in Arnprior During this past Thanksgiving weekend, many of you travelled some distance to be with family and/ or friends. For those who drove, you likely stopped to refill your car with gas at least once during your trip. Just as you must stop to refuel on longer trips, migrating birds also stop to refuel during their great journeys south. How often a bird stops on its trip south and the type of fuel it loads up with depends very much on the species. For example, shorebirds that travel from the Arctic to South America feed on mud-dwelling invertebrates such as Corophium (tiny amphipods) and worms. Remarkably, small shorebirds such as Semipalmated Sandpipers fly from their nesting grounds to the Bay of Fundy and feast on Corophium for about 10 days. During that time their body weight doubles because of all of the fat they are accumulating. Fat is the fuel that powers their migration, which will eventually take them all the way to Suriname, South America. There are two remarkable aspects to this flight, which encompasses 4,650 kilometres. One is that it will take them no more than three days to complete it. The other is that the final leg of their journey south is flown non-stop.

While small songbirds also travel great distances to reach wintering grounds, they seldom perform incredible marathons. Their journey is generally a more leisurely one, composed of short segments spread out over weeks or even months, with each portion spanning up to 500 kilometres. These short trips generally take place at night because flying at night offers several advantages. It is safer because hawks, their main predators, are not active, they get better mileage because headwinds that make them burn up excessive amounts of their stored fuel are usually absent, and it is cooler, which is important because the massive flight muscles that power their flight generate a lot of heat, and the cool night air keeps the birds from overheating and dehydrating. After having flown a few hundred kilometres, songbirds land

to refuel. Insect-eaters such as warblers tend to search for caterpillars and other insects in the foliage of trees while seedeaters look for seeds either on the ground or still attached to a plant. They might spend several days at good feeding sites, which are known as stopovers, resting and MICHAEL RUNTZ replenishing their fat Warblers such as this young Yellow-rumped are normally thought of as reserves. Regardless of their insect-eaters but during migration many eat fruit including berries of main diet, songbirds Wild Raisin. -- TRINITY-ST. She admits there is a lot of work to be done as a team to move everything forward. “It can’t be done by one person and it can’t be done overnight. It’s going to take up to five to 10 years to deliver a lot of strong projects that will forecast the community forward as a leader in economic development in Eastern Ontario,” said Leach. Leach says Renfrew already has a lot of strengths. “There is a passion here within the community. There’s a lot of independent businesses and how can we work with those independent businesses to help them launch themselves into the next stage of development?” She told council that 60 per cent of a community’s growth comes from within. “So what services can we help provide to them, with our partners, to make sure they are successful and continue to be successful in expanding, in turn hire new employees and we want new entrepreneurs and we want our youth to invest in the community.” Coun. Arlene Jamieson told Leach after her presentation to council she was really glad to have someone like her on staff. “I’m really excited, I want to see Renfrew take this and move forward.

KIMBERLEY LEACH I have said before we are on the cusp and now we have some fire behind us.” Coun. Tom Sidney admitted the town has been stagnant and reactionary for a long time. “This is something to bring Renfrew forward,” said Sidney. “I think this addition will help Renfrew … and will help bring people here.”

“I’m coming to Renfrew to crash Cecil’s homecoming party. I have nothing to lose and everything to gain in this match,” is what Deeno Benjamin had to say about facing Cecil Nyx (Curtis McLean) in Renfrew on Saturday, October 22 at the RCAF Wing at 164 Argyle St. “All the pressure is on him. When I beat Cecil in the middle of the ring in front of his family and friends, everyone will know that the hometown boy never amounted to anything!” The two have been rivals for a longtime in the indy circuit and after being handed two consecutive defeats, Nyx has vowed he will get the win, thus this is why Benjamin requested to face Nyx as he personally wants to hand him his third straight loss in front of his friends and family. “He may as well hang up his boots for good once I’m done with him.” When asked what got him into wrestling Deeno said “my dad brought me to Wrestlemania 6 when I was seven years old. After watching Warrior beat Hogan for the belt I was hooked.” Since Benjamin started his training, he’s been in the business for 12 and a-half-years. “When I got into wrestling I had no idea

where it would take me. I didn’t even think I would get the chance to actually wrestle in front of a crowd.” Now he’s wrestled for close to 25 different companies all across Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. Some other matches you will see is Alexia Nicole take on Sassy Stephie in women’s action, Super Smash Bros (Stu Grayson and Evil Uno) versus Fight or Flight (Vaughn Vertigo and Ulises Vazquez) in tag team match. Also Mr. Jonathon Rukin taking on Sexy Eddy and others. Doors open for the show at 7:30 p.m. and the first match is at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show are $15 for adult, $10 for kids and can be bought at Renfrew Pizzaria or at the RCAF Wing. VIP tickets are being sold for $20 and if you wish for these please contact Eric McLean at 613-312 -7703 or Chris Johnston at 613-3127957 (they also have adult and kids tickets). Eight-year-old boy set to compete in karate world championship Jessica Cunha

jessica.cunha@metroland.com

An eight-year-old Ottawa boy with ties to Renfrew is set to compete as a member of Team Canada at the Unified World Championships in Italy next month. Gabriel Bastien’s movements are so quick, snapshots are just a blur of movement as he demonstrates his karate moves in his family’s living room in Kanata. Watching the fast and fancy footwork, the co-ordinated and practiced hand movements that send a bo staff, a martial arts weapon, exactly where he wants, is mesmerizing. Taking lessons since he was three years old, Gabriel is quick, agile and well placed to compete at the world championships in Italy. He will take part in eight divisions in the under-nine category. “I was really happy and excited,” said Gabriel about learning he had a spot on the team. “I’m trying to get the gold medal, the championship.” He had no idea he was in the running to compete in the world championship, which runs from Oct. 25 to 30. The selection process is based on a competitor’s results in a number of tournaments. “It was more just a surprise, I didn’t even know about this,” said Gabriel. “My coach, who’s the president of WKA (World Kickboxing and

Karate Association) Canada … he gave me an envelope saying you’re on the team for the Team Canada WKA Championship. I was really happy and excited.” His grandmother, Bonnie Green, of Renfrew, and her sister Nancy Sheedy will travel with Gabriel, his mom Stephanie and father James to Carrara, Italy, to cheer on Gabriel. “I’m pretty excited about that,” said Green. “I’m really, really anxious to see him, especially on this kind of a stage; the fact that it’s worlds, the fact that he’s eight and the fact that he got an invitation to this and he’s eight years old and it’s in Italy.” Green said it’s doubly special because of Gabriel’s ties to Mount St. Patrick. “This little tiny blip of the world and there’s this boy who has a connection to this little tiny town and he’s going to go to worlds,” she said. “We’re very, very proud of the fact that this little boy is there. It just makes it really cool. “I’m very biased because I’m grandma, but he’s one of those kids who’s just a really nice little boy. He works so hard and practices so hard. This is such an accomplishment and he’s only been competing for about a year and a half.” Currently, Gabriel is the North American Sport Karate Association national champion in the eight-tonine year-old division. To practice for the world champi-

onships, Gabriel, who is at the brown belt level, is competing against older black belts – and he’s winning. Over the Sept. 10-11 weekend, he placed second in a tournament in Kansas City in a U13 black belt competition. “It was my first time doing black belt,” said the John Young Elementary Grade 3 student. “I was really happy when I got that second (place) and also beating the other people that I wouldn’t think I’d beat.” He has three coaches from Kansas in the U.S. who he video chats with for regular training, and practices at the Endeavour Martial Arts academy in Bells Corners which recently moved from the Kanata Recreation Complex. He’s also the first nonblack belt to get sponsorship with the National Martial Arts Circuit for team MMAC, said his mother, Stephanie. “It’s pretty crazy, we put him in karate to learn how to do push ups and how to do jumping jacks,” she said. “Now its turned into this, but he’s happy. He loves it.” The family travels often for training or to compete in out-of-province and U.S. tournaments. Gabriel trains six days a week for about two hours a day, and thumps and bangs can often be heard throughout the house as he practices SUBMITTED on his own. “It’s fun to go against difGabriel Bastien, an eight-year-old with ties to Renfrew, is off to the ferent people I haven’t seen before,” said Gabriel. “It makes me better.” world karate world championship.

Renfrew Tennis Club wraps up season with awards banquet Racquet from the Courts

Long-time Renfrew Tennis Club members Eldon Ferguson and Robert Pelletier received standing ovations from an appreciative crowd at the club’s banquet and awards night held on Oct. 1 at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. The men were co-recipients of the Bruce Childs Volunteer Award, an Ontario Tennis Association honour

to recognize club members who have made a significant contribution to tennis at the club level. As active volunteers for more than 40 years, both men were driving forces in the construction of the courts at Ma-Te-Way. Garry Irving, last year’s recipient, in presenting the award to Ferguson, also spoke of Ferguson’s many years of organizing and running a very popular doubles league, and spon-

Nulty, who emceed the evening, presented a brand new award to Henry Schaly. The Lila Prince award recognizes a positive and supportive attitude toward the game of tennis and the Renfrew Tennis Club. The new award is also a tribute to long-time member Lila Prince, who was a wonderful ambassador for the club. Schaly, who put in many long

hours building a new storage shed for the club, was the proud first recipient of this special honour. Sandi Heins, who sponsors a Canada Day tournament, presented the Canada Day trophy to Garry Irving, who with Rob Hagerman was this year’s winner. Heins urged everyone to come out for next year’s event to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. See TENNIS. page 27

Every year, local businesses, service organizations, schools, churches and community-minded individuals throw their support behind the Sunshine Coach service, which is so critical from a quality of life perspective to all of our fellow citizens who depend on it every day.

Community rallies behind Sunshine Coach for annual radiothon Sunshine Coach

For more than 30 years, Sunshine Coach has been providing transportation for people in Renfrew and area who live with mobility challenges. As the service grew from a single coach in 1985 to the fleet of 12 vehicles that are now on the road every day, public support has been crucial to the success of Sunshine Coach. The need for the service is great and continues to grow. Sunshine Coach now conducts nearly 34,000 trips annually, a volume that is 77 per cent higher than

it was in 2010. Traditionally, Friends of the Disabled and Sunshine Coach have reached out for public support through a single major event. The Reach For The Rainbow Radiothon will again be hosted by Valley Heritage Radio 98.7. Every year, local businesses, service organizations, schools, churches and community-minded individuals throw their support behind this service that is so critical from a quality of life perspective to all of our fellow citizens who depend on it everyday. The radiothon will take place on

Sunday, Oct. 23 between the hours of 1 and 5 p.m. and will be broadcast live over Valley Heritage Radio 98.7 on the FM dial. The broadcast will be anchored by Art Jamieson who is well known throughout the Ottawa Valley as a tireless worker for charities and who has been a perennial host of past Sunshine Coach events. The public are most cordially invited to drop in to the Valley Heritage Radio studios located at 3009 Burnstown Rd. to enjoy the live entertainment on the Cavanagh Stage. The ever-popular Kilos of Coins

promotion will be part of the radiothon with a weigh scale located within one of our newest coaches, which will be parked outside the studios. Everyone who has some spare change and would like to ‘weigh-in’ is invited to come out, meet one of the Sunshine Coach drivers, inspect one of our vehicles and add their contribution to the total weight of coins. The aim of the radiothon is to raise funds to ensure that Sunshine Coach remains viable and that fares remain affordable for everyone who relies on the service every day. Pledges can be

called-in to the day-of pledge line at 613-432-7299, or secure online donations can be made by visiting www. sunshinecoach.ca and clicking on the ‘Donate Now’ button. In the weeks leading up to the event, donations will be received at the Sunshine Coach offices located at 44 Railway Ave. between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Community support has made the service provided by Sunshine Coach service possible and this same kind of commitment will help ensure that the service is available for all who need it for many years to come.

Figuring out the new ice at the Curling Club Andy Sklepowicz Behind the Glass

This week was the first opportunity to hit the ice and to experience what all the changes will mean to the curling surface. Skips are already mapping the new runs and amount of curl as well as the speed of the ice. Some of us will finally figure it out by December, just before the next flooding which will once again change the ice surface. And if you are still interested in trying the new ice there is pick-up curling for everyone on Friday at 10 a.m. or that evening. If you want to try the community league Friday evening, phone Ben Oakes for more information at 613312-9905. On Oct. 1 golfers/curlers hit the grass/ice for the annual sweep and putt and since my summer training was at the getting off the couch and sprint to the fridge state and missing

my still recovering bionic babe (talk about getting on her good side), I decided to pass on the opening festivities. However a Friday call that went like this sprang me into action. “Eh, Andy we need a skip for Saturday and we’re desperate. You available?” “Well ok, but I haven’t golfed all summer……” “No problem. You’re our last hope….” Well it wasn’t a glowing endorsement but….. So I arrived at the links and heard my team captain say, “Our team handicap… ah I guess its Andy”. OK, not a glowing endorsement but …. My three person team carried me thru seven holes before I hit a ball they could use and even that was a sympathy call as the other three balls were within a few feet of mine. Finally we were done and only 1 over par with special thanks to Val,

THIS WEEK’S FEATURE

Laurie and Capt. Larry. After a great lunch thanks to Anne, Sue, Yvonne and Lyn we hit the ice where we dominated…. the hand shake and the second end. Otherwise, the skip played well enough to ensure that our opposition took top place. Congratulations to Brian and Ken Thiessen, Chris Wentzel and Brian Hewitt. A special thanks to Brian and Lyn who did double duty on Saturday and to Karen who repaired, prepared and ‘womanned’ the bar. Most draw masters are at the stage of completing draw schedules and as usual players delay to the last minute. This causes problems and frustration for all involved. So, if you haven’t registered and/ or paid yet please do so or you may miss out on the first draw. The least you will do is make the people happy who are working hard to make the start of the season run smoothly.

OFAH/MNRF extend partnership for Community Hatchery Program Renewed three-year agreement underway to support community fish hatcheries in Ontario The renewal of funding for the Community Hatchery Program (CHP) is great news for fishing in Ontario. Another three-year partnership is underway between the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) to support Ontario’s community fish hatcheries. Volunteer-operated hatcheries not only stock millions of fish annually across the province, they serve as community education centres that promote good fisheries management and conservation. Each year, more than 900 volunteers donate nearly 60,000 hours of their time at community fish hatcheries across the province. In 2015, the CHP provided funding and technical support to 41 community hatcheries, which raised public fish for public waters in Ontario. These stocked fish contribute to rehabilitation, they help conserve local genetic strains and create additional fishing opportunities for Ontario anglers. Running a fish hatchery isn’t easy. Raising fish is not only time consuming, but the high costs of energy bills, feed and equipment can make hatcheries very expensive to operate -- and that’s where the value of an initiative like the CHP comes in. “Some community hatcheries would find it challenging to remain operational without the support of the CHP funding partnership,” says

The OFAH is a proud partner in this highly successful program and we look forward to the next three years. MATT BURLEY

CHP co-ordinator Matt Burley. “The OFAH is a proud partner in this highly successful program and we look forward to the next three years working with Ontario’s community fish hatcheries.” Community-based fish culture is built on a foundation of passion, dedication and genuine concern for resource management. Whether volunteers are raising Walleye, Lake Trout or Chinook Salmon, their commitment to raising and stocking fish is reinforced with funding and technical support through CHP. As we transition from summer to fall, when you are out on the water, think about the hard work and dedication of community hatchery volunteers who are helping to conserve local fisheries and create more fishing opportunities for all Ontarians. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is Ontario’s largest, non-profit, fish and wildlife conservation-based organization, representing 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters and 735 member clubs. Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) and St. Joseph’s Catholic High School facedoff in high school basketball action on Sept. 29, Jaguar’s Ashlyn Kilby-McLure brings the ball up the court as Sydney Perry and Maiya Bruce follow her up.

Girls high school basketball action heats up in Renfrew Fall means one thing for local hoopsters: girls basketball has hit the court. The Upper Ottawa Valley High School Athletic Association girls basketball season opened on Sept. 27. The Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) Raiders senior girls basketball team has started the season 3-0 and the St. Joseph’s Catholic High School (SJHS) Jaguars are 2-1. The junior Raiders are 1-2 and the junior Jaguars are also 1-2. SENIORS On Sept. 27, RCI opened the sea-

son with a 39-21 win over Opeongo High School. Seven players scored four or more points for the Raiders. High scorers were: Eli Scott and Courtney Roach who each scored eight points. “Haley Roderick had a great allaround game,” said coach Adam Noack, in an email to the Renfrew Mercury. Roderick had three assists, five steals and two rebounds. Noack says Sydney Smart also had a strong game with five points, eight steals and four rebounds. On Sept. 29, Renfrew’s cross town rivals played one another with RCI coming out on top 30-29.

Phone 432-3655

“The team showed a lot of guts and poise in defeating SJHS,” said Noack. “The Jaguars led most of the game but due to Scott and Georgia Clemmer’s shutdown defense on the Jaguars’ top two players, the Raiders were able to stick around.” Smart hit a free throw with under 30 seconds remaining to clinch the win. Roach finished the game with 10 points, while Madison Stroud had what Noack says was an incredible game with eight points, 10 rebounds and three steals. On Oct. 4, RCI improved to 3-0 with a win over Valour.

In Loving Memory of

Carol Lewis White

In Memory of our Mother and Wife October 13 2014 You can shed tears that she is gone or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she’s gone or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back or you can do what she’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear Always and Forever in our Hearts Mom Love Brian, Tracy, Michael Lisa, Patrick, Ryan, Jennifer Janet, Brian and Kimberly

October 8, 1991 Mom it’s been 25 years since dad passed It’s amazing that all those years Have slipped away You know every time we think of him A tear still forms in our eye You are still with us You’re 92, he would be 93 You never replaced the love you shared. To this day you have 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, another coming He would loved to have watched, The little ones grow They are his legacy It is unfortunate they will never know This wonderful man. A veteran of WW11, shot down over France, Where he jumped out of a burning plane. Into the night sky captured and Taken prisoner for 2 years, Where he escaped and made his Way home to you. The rest is history. This was a great and humble man. It is up to us to keep his memory alive. Always loved – Always missed. Your Family

FRIDAY NIGHT

MACGREGOR In loving memory of a dear mother, grandmother Evelyn, who passed away on October 14, 1989.

Your end came fast and sudden, No time to say goodbye, you were gone before we realized, And only God knows why. You left us with happy memories, And sorrow too great to be told, But to us who loved and lost you, your memory will never grow old.

Sales and Leasing Representative

It was time. There was a bite in the air. This was the day the Findlay Oval would be moved from the summer kitchen back into the house. It had been allowed to go out the night before after supper on Friday, so it would be well cooled off by the time it was moved. Being Saturday, the brothers were home from school, and it would take every hand to move the big stove back where it belonged. With any luck, the stove would be up and running in time for supper. Heaven forbid that Father didn’t have a full meal at the end of the day! Always, the stove was rolled in and out on logs, but Father had a better idea that year. He spent hours in the work shed building a platform on wheels and it was his intention to hoist the stove onto this trolley and slide it right into the kitchen. Of course, it would have to be lifted onto the trolley first. And I remembered how the brothers and Father struggled to get it onto the logs and then roll it into the summer kitchen. Father said it weighed more than two work horses put together. Everyone was in bad humour by the time it was all over. So the trolley, I hoped would work out just fine. The stove pipes had to be taken down first and it was my sister Audrey’s and my job to shake the soot out and make sure they were clean enough to attach back to the stove when it was back in the kitchen. I stayed well away from the summer kitchen when the lifting started. I couldn’t bear to see the red faces and the veins standing out in their necks, as they struggled with the load. Well! That move was different from all others! Father could be heard

Memories MARY COOK

swearing at Everett, who was yelling at Emerson, who was blaming young Earl. Someone, Father roared, had forgotten to empty the reservoir and as soon as the stove was tilted in the move, the water sloshed out and covered Father from his waist to the top of his work boots. To say he wasn’t happy was an understatement! So there sat the stove. Two legs on the trolley and the other two on the summer kitchen floor, with the water pouring out like a rushing river. I stood in the doorway and it was like watching a Hop-a-long Cassidy Movie. For a few minutes Father stood and looked at the water running down his front and the reservoir door hanging open. Emerson, Everett and Earl stood looking at Father for further instructions. I was amazed at how much water the reservoir could hold. With the toe of his work boot, Father maneuvered the braided rug that was close by, over to the pool of water on the floor. Of course, that only spread the water further and did nothing to sop up what can come out of the reservoir. He sent Earl in the for the rag bag. “And don’t bring one rag. Bring the whole bag,” he hollered. In the meantime, he was asking who had the job of emptying the water. Emerson pointed to Everett and Everett

pointed in the general direction of Earl going out the door for the rag bag, shaking his head and saying “not me.” Earl brought in what used to be an old flour bag pillow slip, now filled with pieces of old underwear, sweaters, and anything else that could no longer be considered usable. Father grabbed it and without taking one thing out of it, used the entire full bag as a mop. Mother would not be pleased and I knew the rags would have to be washed, dried and restored in the bag for further use. Finally, as much water as possible was wiped up, the stove heaved onto the trolley and moved back into the house. The pipes were put on. It took several hours to put everything back in order, a new fire lit, and supper put on the stove to cook. Father was as cross as a bear with a sore paw, the brothers were still accusing each other of failing to empty the reservoir and I was sitting in a corner of the kitchen pretending to read my newest book from the Renfrew Library. But I couldn’t help thinking of the night before when the whole house was getting ready for the big move and Mother, right in the middle of the chaos said, “I think Mary is old enough to help this year. She can empty the reservoir.” I was grateful Mother didn’t remember giving me the job and I reasoned owning up to it would just add more chaos to an already out-of-hand situation. Sulpher gives riveting Chalk Talk on signals at duplicate Lewis MacDonald

Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club

Carol Sulphur continued her focus on defensive strategies at Ma-Te- Way Activity Centre Oct. 5. She gave a fascinating explanation of two types of signals to communicate with your partner: attitude and suit preference. Carol summed up attitude as how much you like your partner’s lead. When partner leads or when he is playing a card on a trick, a high card (seven or above) is encouraging while a low card is discouraging. Some partnerships reverse this order, but that would be by individual agreement. Suit preference comes into play when a partner has to discard.

Carol emphasized that there is nothing random about a first discard. Her first rule was that a six or seven is a neutral card that says the partner has no preference. Play what you want. If you play an eight or better, you are asking for the next highest-ranking suit. For example, discarding the nine of hearts would call for a spade lead. A low card by contrast calls for the lower-ranking suit. The five of diamonds, for example, would call for a club lead. The afternoon had nine-and-a-half tables in play. No slam was attempted by any pair which is unusual.

Congratulations to the Oct. 5 winners: North-South • First: Phyllis Brennan and Arthur Ham; • Second: Ernie Berndt and Eric Brown; • Third: Jeannie Yagminas and Ted Amsridge. East-West • First: Bernadette Culhane and Tom Culhane; • Second: Sue Phillips and Sue Gray; • Third: Rick Duncan and Jim Perry. Important info: A Swiss Teams event is scheduled for Renfrew on Oct. 19. Plan now for your team of four and notify Dave Sulpher (613-432-5060).

RVH commits to providing French services in designated areas In order to enhance the patient- and family-centred care experience offered to its francophone clients, Renfrew Victoria Hospital is the taking the necessary steps to meet the requirements of the French Language Services Act (FLSA). RVH operates three regional programs in a geographical area of Renfrew County designated to comply with the Act: • Addiction Treatment Services (Pembroke satellite office) • Hemodialysis (Pembroke satellite office) • Regional Assault Care Program

(Pembroke-based clients) The City of Pembroke (along with the townships of Whitewater Region and Laurentian Valley) fall under the FLSA legislation. RVH’s board of directors recently supported the request for partial designation and approved the plan to implement changes to these identified programs to meet requirements of the act. Receiving health care services in French for Francophone patients can lead to increased patient comfort, feeling of control and better outcomes.

“We recognize how essential it is to recovery and well-being that Frenchspeaking victims of abuse are able to access health services in their preferred language,” notes Jennifer Valiquette, RN, BScN, SANE(A), clinical nursing manager, Regional Assault Care Program. Julia Boudreau, vice president of RVH corporate services, says improvements are now underway to fulfil the obligations of the act, and at first contact departments have begun the journey of providing service in the official language of the patient’s choice.
