News - Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski is outraged at the Auditor General’s report that the Liberals are responsible for at least $675 million of unnecessary costs after cancelling the Oakville gas plant. “The auditor’s report found that the contract to construct the plant contained several clauses that did not oblige the government to pay cancellation costs,” said an Oct. 8 news release from Yakabuski’s office. “Despite these protections, the McGuintyWynne government waived the clauses to speed up the cancellation and avoid having the plant become an election issue,” the release said. “For crass political reasons, the Liberals gave away the key to the vault and said help yourself,” Yakabuski said. “If you’re wondering why your hydro bills continue to skyrocket the culprit is Liberal mismanagement of the energy system, pure and simple” he added. Yakabuski said the auditor also found that the extra cost of delivering gas to Napanee, where the Oakville plant was re-located, could add another $140 million to the total. “Kathleen Wynne has some explaining to do. The auditor made clear today that the government knew as far back as October 2010 that the costs they were quoting for the cancellation was a fraction of what the taxpayers would end up paying” Yakabuski said. “The facts are clear; the Liberal party wasted hundreds of millions of taxpayers’ dollars just to save a Liberal seat. The people of Ontario will have the opportunity to pass judgement on their decision,” he said. The release said that as recently as her appearance at Justice Committee on April 3, 2013 Premier Wynne was telling Ontarians the cost of cancelling the Oakville power plant could be as low $33 million.

Insurance coverage to the rescue in Horton Steve Newman steve.newman@metroland.com
A July 7 windstorm inflicted major damage to the roof of Horton’s municipal garage. At first, Horton staff sought quotes for partial and
full roof replacement. However, the insurance company, following discussions with the company with the lowest quote, deemed it necessary to replace the entire roof. See INSURANCE, page 2
