Mooney keeps fine company at community gala Steve Newman steve.newman@metroland.com
More than 175 people gathered on Thursday, Oct. 17 to pay tribute to some of the people who help make Renfrew shine in good times and bad. The occasion was the Renfrew and Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual community awards banquet. As chamber president Rob Campbell said, it’s an important night for the community because “we’re here tonight to celebrate the people who make this community what it is.” Campbell returned to his native Renfrew a few years ago, he said, because this is a small town where “things get done.” Fine examples of that were the youth citizen of the year, eight-yearold Arleigh Prince of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School, and Darrell Mooney, who on his 69th birthday accepted the chamber’s citizen-of-theyear honour. Breigh Whalen of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School and Prince were the youth nominees, but Prince earned the selection committee’s nod after spearheading a drive for Renfrew and District Food Bank that filled a trailer with food and raised an additional $266. As she said in the televised profile played during the ceremony, hosted by emcee Dai Bassett, she undertook the fundraiser so poorer people could get healthier and stronger. “I’m happy and excited,” she said about receiving the award. The citizen of the year is a Horton resident, who has largely used his music with The Countrymen to help raise money for community causes, among STEVE NEWMAN/METROLAND them the Valley Bluegrass Festival and Youth of the year award recipient Arleigh Prince has a few words to say to emcee Dai Bassett.
