Community supports mourning families, Wolves TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The Renfrew Timberwolves and the entire community are grieving after a deadly collision on Friday, Oct. 27. Police believe alcohol contributed to the crash, the Ontario Provincial Police, said in a release on Monday afternoon. All four of the 18-year-old men involved in the crash were members of the Renfrew Timberwolves of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League. Brandon Thomas Hanniman, of Admaston/Bromley Township, was pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash on Calabogie Road, two kilometres south of the Village of Burnstown. On Saturday, Alex Paquette succumbed to his injuries from the crash. A statement issued by the team on Saturday night confirmed the two others involved in the incident were Ben Scheuneman and Jake McGrimmon. The statement said Scheuneman is in the intensive care unit with serious injuries and “has the game of his life to battle. We are with his family to support and cheer him on and are hopeful with his recovery.” McGrimmon has serious injuries and is awaiting surgery and “he too has a tough road ahead but we are hope-

Charges upgraded DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
First-degree murder is the upgraded charge a man faces after a collision claimed the life of an Arnprior woman over a month ago. OPP issued a press release saying Zachary Wittke, 20, of Eganville faces the murder charge after a Sept. 25 midafternoon chase from McNab/Braeside to Daniel Street ended when his stolen truck struck a car. Sheila Welsh, 65, of Arnprior died after pulling out of her driveway to pick up her grandchildren from school. “OPP officers from the Renfrew detachment under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman of the Criminal Investigation Branch are continuing to investigate,” reads the release. “Responding OPP officers had observed the suspect vehicle on Highway 17 travelling eastbound in the area of Calabogie Road. Shortly after, the suspect vehicle was involved in a collision on Daniel Street in Arnprior. The male suspect was apprehended and arrested at the scene.” Wittke’s initial charges remain: Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death; Flight while being pursued by police; Driving while disqualified; Theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000. His next court appearance is set for Nov. 1, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke. The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate, which it does when police officers are involved in incidents where someone has been seriously injured or dies.

“He just had that contagious smile and it didn’t matter what you may (be) going through he could make (you) smile too. “He was a cowboy at heart with his boots and hat, a true Ontario farmer and proud of it.” This was Hanniman’s first season with the Wolves, but he played Renfrew minor hockey his entire life. He wore #65 and “was out there every game loud and proud battling it out..We will miss him dearly.” Paquette or ‘Package,’ is being remembered as a strong, kind, compassionate and caring kid off the ice. He earned his nickname because he was the complete package when he played, offensive, defensive, an-all around great player. “On the ice he was a firecracker that you could not help but notice #88, his presence was felt any time he hit the ice,” read the statement. “He played with a passion and love for the
game.” This was Paquette’s second season with the Wolves and he “loved that he could play with his big brother Nych.” Paquette also played in the Renfrew minor hockey system as well as with the Valley Aces. Two of the players were students or former students at Renfrew Collegiate Institute and the other two attended St. Joseph’s Catholic High School. Both schools brought in crisis counselling teams to help the staff and students and lowered their flags to half mast. The flags were also lowered at the Ma-TeWay Activity Centre. Social media was flooded with support for the team and those affected over the weekend. The Renfrew Timberwolves Twitter handle was trending across Canada over the weekend as well as the hashtag #WolfPackStrong.

On Oct. 30 Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed new details in the Oct. 27 fatal crash on Calabogie Road. Brandon Thomas Hanniman of Admaston/Bromley died at the scene. Alexander (Alex) Paquette of Renfrew succumbed to his injuries in hospital. “Hanniman was driving the vehicle at the time. Three occupants were ejected from the vehicle. Police believe alcohol contributed to the crash,” said an OPP release issued Oct. 30. “The investigation has revealed the vehicle was travelling northbound towards Burnstown when it left the roadway and struck a rock cut.” The collision involved a 2006 car. Several of the occupants had been ejected, said the release. “That indicates three of the occupants were not wearing seatbelts,” said OPP Const. Janice Sawbridge. “If they were wearing seatbelts it may have changed the outcome and severity of their injuries.” Renfrew County chief paramedic Mike Nolan said they were called to the scene on Calabogie Road just west of Burnstown after midnight on Oct. 27. “While on scene, paramedics identified there were four patients,” said Nolan. “They pronounced one patient dead at the scene. The three remaining patients had critical lifethreatening injuries.” Two patients were treated by paramedics and transported directly to the trauma centre at the Ottawa Hospital, said Nolan. “One patient was brought to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital helipad and airlifted by Ornge to the trauma centre,” he said. He spoke to the gravity of the incident. “It’s certainly an enormous tragedy for our community and a loss to the community and the families of the vic-

tims,” said Nolan. “Certainly, the paramedics’ thoughts and prayers go out to all the people involved, including the victims.” Police, paramedics and firefighters from McNab/Braeside Township responded to the scene. Two OPP technical collision investigators are assisting with this investigation, which is being led by the Ontario Coroner’s Office. Officers would like anyone who may have information on this investigation to contact them, including anyone who may have seen or spoken to the four earlier in the evening. Public has until Nov. 17 to submit comments on updates to Renfrew’s official plan TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Renfrew is one step closer to an updated official plan. On Oct. 24, council held a public meeting on the proposed updates to the document. Bruce Howarth, senior planner for the County of Renfrew, made the presentation and included some of the key updates. Howarth explained the town needed to review the official plan to bring the town’s plan into conformity with current provincial legislation and policies and to address key issues identified by the town. “The current official plan that you have right now is working very well for the town; this exercise that we are doing right now is not intended to be a rewrite or not making major changes,” said Howarth. “There are a couple key updates; the main point is to make sure it is still meeting all of the provincial legislation.” One of the key changes is the secondary dwelling policy that is a self-contained residential unit with kitchen and bathroom facilities. A new policy has been added to the plan to reflect new provincial legislation to allow a secondary dwelling in a single, semi-detached and a row house. “Probably the biggest change is the second dwelling unit policy. This is a province-wide initiative … This is probably the most significant changes that could impact the town,” said Howarth. Some of the other proposed policy changes include active transportation plans, natural heritage, the building permit process and affordable housing. Officials have received some comments from different provincial agencies, town staff and members of the public. “We will take all of these comments that we have received and come up with a final version and come back in January and (we are) hoping for a date in February for council to adopt the official plan, and then it’s submitted

to the County of Renfrew for approval,” said Howarth. All comments must be submitted to town planner Ivan Burton by Nov. 17: iburton@ renfrew.ca or 613-432-4848. The meeting and open house that was held on Oct. 19 with five members of the public is phase five of the review. The process started in January and Howarth hopes it will be ready for council to approve in February of 2018. The last review started in 2006 and was adopted in 2008; there have been delays initiating this review because the province was updating their legislation. New staff The Town of Renfrew approved the selection of Victoria Thomas for the contracted position of Business Retention and Expansion Coordinator on Oct. 24. Coun. Arlene Jamieson was very happy with the appointment and said this was a crucial position. The town applied for and was successful in
obtaining funding under the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs under the Rural Economic Development Program to fund 50 per cent of the position at a cost of $41,941. The town budgeted for the rest in the 2017 budget. The one-year position starts Nov. 20. Building assessment Council also approved the contract for Morrison Hershfield to undertake a building conditions assessment of 1 Innovation Dr. at a total of $21,200. Mayor Don Eady said it is a pretty important building to the town and the town has completed similar assessments on every other building in Renfrew. Fee agreement Renfrew approved a five-year bylaw to enter into a non-resident user fee agreement with the Township of Greater Madawaska. The agreement sees the township pay the town $8,000 in the first year and $11,000 in the final year. The contract allows residents
to use recreation programs/facilities at the same rate as Renfrew residents. Eady said this was absolutely great for the town as it brings people into the town and helps increase economic development. Construction update The town is changing the scope of its construction plan for next summer to include some of the connecting streets. Council approved a bylaw to award a scope of change to the engineering services for the Highway 60 Downtown Project to Jp2g Consulting Inc. for $94,950. The additional work is also being listed as provisional items, which give the town an option to award these components, or not. According to the report, the public works committee was concerned that the connecting streets to Raglan Street South would leave a gap in the street improvements and felt that completion of connecting streets between Plaunt and Argyle may be warranted.

Poppy campaign underway
Sherry Haaima/Metroland
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 148 poppy chair Ron Kilby, left, and sgt. at arms/chaplain Rev. Bruce Ferguson get set to raise the poppy flag to kick off the 2017 poppy campaign in Renfrew. Volunteers will be at various locations from now until Nov. 11 distributing poppies and accepting donations. Funds raised assist veterans in need or in distress with things like food, shelter or medical attention. On Sunday, Nov. 5 there are two Remembrance Day services - one at the Horton Community Centre and a second in Calabogie at the cenotaph both at 2 p.m. On Nov. 9 a service will be held Chartwell Quail Creek Lounge at 10:30 a.m. The Renfrew service will take place in Low Square on Nov. 11.
Teams show support for Wolves From page 2
Many teams from all levels shared photos of what they were doing to honour and remember Hanniman and Paquette. From wearing the victims’ numbers on their helmets, taping their sticks blue and yellow or standing united at centre ice before their games. Former Wolves coach and Renfrew native Tony Iob issued two statements via Twitter. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the @ RenfrewJrB families that have been impacted by this horrible tragedy this morning. Having the honour of coaching these boys, and watching them grow up, makes the news that much harder to bear. Devastating not only (to) the hockey community, but the Renfrew community as well,” said Iob. The second post was after Paquette died. “Toughest thing in my life was saying goodbye to Alex today,” said Iob. “Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Alex.
Keep skating Alex, never stop.” TSN sports anchor James Duthie was one of the many who also sent his support. “My heart goes out to this team, and its families. Awful accident claims two young lives, two more in hospital. All of us at TSN with you.” The Timberwolves cancelled both of their weekend games due to the tragic event. “We appreciate everyone’s concern and are doing our best to stay strong and united as a team. #Wolfpackstrong,” concluded the statement. The team is planning to honour both Hanniman and Paquette, however team officials confirmed on Sunday afternoon “this may have to be delayed with funeral arrangements this week (is) going be a tough one so not sure we will play this weekend.” Both games have been cancelled. Hanniman’s funeral was held on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Whitewater Wesleyan Church. As of press deadline the arrangements for Paquette had yet to be finalized.
Nadine’s efforts to lobby for a forgotten WW1 hero resulted in a weekendlong celebration, historic plaques being placed in his honour, and a new marker being placed on Captain Brown’s previously unmarked grave.

OPINION
Connected to your community
Be #Wolfpackstrong Hockey is more than just a game. This weekend the actions of the larger hockey community proved that hockey is family. The collision that occurred early Friday morning is a tragedy for our small tight knit community, having claimed the lives of two young men. It seems everyone is connected to one of the four young men involved in the crash some way, somehow. The outpouring of support was overwhelming if you followed the hashtag #Wolfpackstrong on social media. The Timberwolves Twitter handle was trending in Canada. This shows the entire nation was behind our team, our community and our grieving families. Numerous hockey teams at both levels of the Central Canada Hockey League and minor hockey teams joined together at centre ice in a unity circle of support for the team and the fallen players. Teams and people from all levels were sending out support, prayers, thoughts, condolences messages. Members of the Whitewater Kings even wore Brandon Hanniman and Alex Paquette’s jersey numbers on their helmets to remember the fallen players. They put their competitive nature aside and understood the bigger cause: family. They are united not just in support but in grief. The crash photos are devastating. They show the severity of the collision and were difficult to shoot. Sadly, it is news. We are all affected by this tragic event that will define our community not just for the coming days but years. As the hockey family unites in its grief we as a community also grieve but we also must be there to support each other moving forward. Walking the halls of the rink is a somber experience. One can imagine
the hallways at both schools on Friday and this coming week will be much of the same. Young and old will be expressing their grief in various ways this week and it will be difficult. The boys were connected to both local high schools and they both have counselling teams in place. As well the Robbie Dean Counselling Centre has a crisis line available 24/seven: 613-629-4243. For some these days have been the most difficult days yet. Former Wolves coach and Renfrew native Tony Iob admitted such on Twitter: “Toughest thing in my life was saying goodbye to Alex today... Keep skating Alex, never stop.” Both boys went through the Renfrew Minor Hockey system and touched many lives. The team describes Hanniman as someone who could bring a smile to anyone’s face, a true Ontario farmer and proud of it. Paquette is being remembered as someone who was kind, caring, compassionate both on and off the ice. His nickname was ‘Package’ because he was the complete package when he played - an all round great player. In the second statement released by St. Joseph’s Catholic High School principal Brennan Trainor he stresses a message of unity. “We unite in prayerful hope that the lives touched by this event can find comfort in God’s love. And that all of us, the people of both the St. Joe’s and (Renfrew Collegiate Institute) communities, can find solace in the solidarity of the community, and in knowing that we are not alone in our pain.” As the Timberwolves team expressed thanks for everyone’s support they said ‘we are doing our best to stay strong and united as a team.’ Let us all continue to be united as a hockey family and community. Be #Wolfpackstong .

Thanks to MP Gallant for continued work To the editor:
My sympathies go to the author of ‘Local MP Cheryl Gallant should be constructive, not destructive’ (Renfrew Mercury Nov. 26) because the MP has gone out of her way to help small businesses understand the proposed changes. Unfortunately, it appears that the author was not a part of the MP’s September town hall. Even though I am not affected by the changes, I attended, and now have a better understanding of the confusion surrounding these proposed tax changes. Not only did the MP arm herself with a few expert tax professionals who told it as it is (and without fear
tactics), but also she gave attendees whatever help they may have needed to oppose the proposals if they wished to. Hopefully these opposers are on their way to being successful in having some major tax proposals revised. I also feel sorry for the author because if she tuned into at least one ‘Power Play’ on CTV per week, she would probably be aware by now that the one per cent she referred to as ‘using loopholes’ are not included in the tax change proposals. The proposals were aimed at small and medium incorporated businesses. She may have also become aware that a good case has been presented against the

finance minister as being the one to use loopholes, as well as for being in a ‘conflict of interest’. This latter issue is now with the ethics commissioner. She will make the conclusion. With respect to the climate change comments, I just want to thank my MP, Cheryl Gallant for the video she shared on this topic from an expert and author in this field. It really helped me, not only to understand the other side of the climate change debate, but also to realize that it may have not received its fair share of coverage. It’s almost like I was hearing this information for the first time! Mary Turgeon, Hailey Station

COUNCIL MEETING – CHANGE OF LOCATION
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 5, 2017

Odi’s Cruise Night gives back RAY BEIMERS
Another successful season of Saturday evening cruise nights concluded this year on Sept. 23. From May to September, a dedicated group of volunteers and vehicle owners attend the weekly cruise nights hosted by Odi’s Kingburger in Renfrew to spend some time together and raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Organizers Glen and Margaret Coules were very pleased to donate $740 recently as a result of this summer’s event. This is the most money they have raised in a single season since they’ve been hosting the cruise nights. They would like to thank Odi for allowing them to host their event and donating prizes. Thanks also to Scott McDonald of Renfrew Auto for allowing parking on his lot when necessary, and to the many local businesses and individuals that donate prizes to the show. And finally, thank you to the many vehicle owners that come from all over the Ottawa Valley and the Pontiac each week to attend the evening and add to the success of the event.
Time to fall back Don’t forget to turn back your clocks this weekend. Daylight savings time ends on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 3 a.m., when clocks are turned back one hour. Sunrise and sunset will be about one hour earlier than the day before. In 2017, daylight saving will resume on Sunday, March 11, 2018 when clocks will spring ahead and it will end on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018 at 2 a.m. When the clocks change it is also a good time to check your smoke alarms. Longer days mean colder nights and it is finally starting to feel like fall with the temperatures dropping below 10 degrees all this week. Monday, Nov. 6 is the start of the final leaf and yard waste week for the Town of Renfrew and in Arnprior the fall collection day is Wednesday, Nov. 15.
NOTICE CHANGE OF LOCATION The next council meeting will be held Tuesday Nov. 7 at 4 pm at the Horton Community Centre, 1005 Castleford Rd. Renfrew, in the upper meeting room.
Ceremony will be indoors

Fair board honours past president Thirty years ago, Jerome Mask, who was honoured by the Renfrew Fair Board Oct. 21, was talked into joining the group. Mask sat on many committees over his time on the board. He was a member of the Barnet Barn committee, the beef cattle committee, the lounge committee, the midway committee, the finance committee and the grounds and maintenance committee. Mask could often be seen down a dirty hole digging up a broken water pipe, fixing an overhead door in one of the buildings, driving around the countryside tagging steers, lambs and pigs or working behind the bar. In 2006 and 2007, Mask served as president of the Renfrew Fair Board.

New art studio opens in Greater Madawaska TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The Fractured Crow Studio has brought together local artists who have a passion to create and share their masterpieces. The studio is located at 982 Fraser Rd. and held its soft opening in early September. It will be open Saturday and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in November finishing with the December Christmas Customer Appreciation Weekend with cookies and cider on Dec. 2 and 3. Reggie Armonas is the owner of the studio and she has partnered with five other artists, all from Greater Madaswask. They offer a wide array of items,
including stain glass, concrete, photography, quilting, woodwork, fused glass, painting of various mediums, jewellery and more. “We have a little bit of everything,” said Armonas. “It’s unique art for the heart, the home and the garden.” The barn that houses the studio is a piece of architectural history in itself as it was built approximately 70 years ago and was originally owned by DW Stewart who donated the land for the Boy Scout Camp. It’s a very warm and cozy atmosphere in the barn and the artists are planning on baking fresh biscuits to add to the homey feel. Armonas makes stain glass and concrete art and just loves the property, on which she has lived since 1994.
“I want to share with people this beautiful view and entice them to come and share the experience and enjoy the beautiful things we have to offer and hopefully buy something too,” said Armonas. Traci Rae makes rustic wooden angels/wise owls, Christmas trees, bees wax candleholders, cedar wood slice coasters, wooden ornaments and hand made scarves. “If you like unique handcrafted art inspired by reclaimed wood or material then this is your destination spot,” said Rae. Vickie MacNabb has been quilting for over 40 years and makes pillows, Tiffany Lepack/Metroland quilts, wall hangings, coasters and Vicki MacNabb, Reggie Armonas and Traci Rae pose with dogs Chester table runners. In recent years, the members of the Royal Canadian Legion have asked the towns, cities, schools, businesses, churches and citizens of Canada to stop for two minutes at 11am on November 11th and pay special tribute to the 116,000 Canadians who have given their lives in war to defend Canada. The silence begins in Newfoundland and sweeps across the country like a wave, as the clock strikes 11am in each time zone. The objective is simply to allow as many Canadians as possible to participate in Remembrance Day. The “wave of Silence” has received resounding support from Canadians in all parts of Canada. In previous years, trains stopped, factory workers paused and school children participated in record numbers in remembering the heroic sacrifices of the men and women who went to war in the 20th century. We come to you again this year to solicit your support for the “2 Minute Save of Silence”. We urge you to encourage your staff and clients, your students and neighbours to sustain the momentum achieved in the observance of Remembrance and in the special tribute paid to the men and women to whom all Canadians owe so much. Thank you for your support. Please help us to make the “2 Minute Wave of Silence” a continuing tradition of Remembrance in Canada.

Fractured crow offers unique pieces From page 12
“I try to make unique pieces of nature and I don’t use any type of pattern, it’s all inspired by nature,” said MacNabb. “(The Fractured Crow) is unique and there should be something for everyone, it’s great to be part of a local group.” VV Evers makes handmade nature jewellery from stones, shells, driftwood, silver forks/spoons and more. “It’s unique, I look at a stone or wire, it’s cool it shapes itself,” said Evers. “It’s inexpensive because I love to do it.” The fourth artist is photographer Sandra Wales, whose passion is taking photos. She focuses on nature and some local structures. Her work can be purchased in stock cards, photos on canvas and framed work. The final artist involved is Leslie Cross who creates canvas artwork and fused glass. The name for the studio actually originates from a piece she was not totally happy with. “She was trying to put together a crow and it cracked at the neck,” said Armonas, a former police officer and Olympic volleyball player. “I used that as a symbol (for the studio) because I am a bit fractured myself.” She also worked at Donohue Art & Frame in Renfrew. “They gave me the emotional permission to do what I’m doing now,” said Armonas. They plan to close after the first weekend of December to go into production and then

Socktober smile celebration
Tiffany Lepack/Metroland
The St. Thomas the Apostle School’s Social Justice Club, under the direction of Kyla Halk, have to date collected 439 pairs of socks for the Renfrew Food Bank in the month of October. The school wanted to prove that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of those who are in need, so socks plus October = Socktober for the Grade 7 lead project. Here the students are pictured tossing some of the many socks in the air on Oct. 20 celebrating breaking their goal. Socks can be dropped off at the school until the end of the month. Front row: Grady Halk, Nathan Sine, Esther Narraway, Chanelle Pechie, Natasha Bulger, Darwyn Timm, Jake MacLeod, and Brandon Cameron. And in the back row: Hannah Cameron, Alyssa Droppo, Tayah O’Mara, Arleigh Prince, Avery Moore, Rylie Moore, Sheylannah Donaghy, Mischa Huyer, and Owen Pender. Missing from photo: Hatti Wisotzki and Leah Gillan.

Freaky fun
Hundreds of young trick or treaters got a head start to candy collection at the Renfrew BIA Freaky Friday event on Friday, Oct. 27. Mel Blimkie left, from Sense of Country, puts on the finishing touches to the Haunted Alley beside the store. Below: Ainlsey and J.J. McFadden, both three years old, are among the first to make their way through the spooky space as they escaped a falling spider.

In order to enjoy a snack of spruce seeds, this Red Squirrel must first nip the scales off the cone.Â
A good winter for squirrels lies ahead MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

the cones were felled from trees earlier this fall, livening the forests with steady thuds as they hit branches and the ground on their downward journey. By felling the cones some time before they are stashed, squirrels realize two benefits: the cones’ protective resin had time to at least partly dry, and, most importantly, the cones were prevented from maturing and releasing their seeds. It is the seeds under the scales that Red Squirrels (and crossbills) desire. Squirrels access seeds by nipping off cone scales with their large incisors, creating messy piles of discarded scales whenever a meal is enjoyed. When eating, Red Squirrels hold a cone in their front paws, rotating it as we would when enjoying a cob of corn. With so much natural food available this fall, many small mammals and birds will benefit. We might too, at least financially, with fewer birds and squirrels visiting our birdfeeders! Since time immemorial our kind has been fascinated with the future. Fortune tellers have made fortunes at the expense of those who wished to know what lay ahead. Farmers looked for signs that told them what the future weather might be. Some of those involved nature: the size of a beaver’s stash of branches for winter consumption was said to foretell the severity of the winter ahead, the larger the stash, the longer the winter. As are the other signs used to predict winter’s severity, this unfortunately is a myth. Although future events, especially those involving winter’s ferocity, are rarely prophesied with accuracy, I am boldly predicting that this winter will be quite favourable for mice and squirrels. It will be good in terms of food abundance and survivorship. Now, I haven’t visited a tarot card reader or looked into a crystal ball. I make this bold prediction because the trees told me it would be so. Crossbills, those nomadic birds with oddly shaped bills, will even nest in winter if their travels bring them to an especially rich crop of cones and therefore seeds. And the winter survival of Red Squirrels is strongly associated with the size of the previous year’s cone crop. With this current large cone crop, Red Squirrels will enjoy many good meals this winter. Currently, they are busily preparing for the upcoming season by piling cones in underground chambers and under fallen trees, with numerous stashes being created through their territory. Cones are carried by mouth, one at a time, with dozens of forays made daily. Many of

Get WITH It walks on Nov. 7 at SJHS TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Step by step you can make a healthy choice, as the weather turns colder. It’s time to Get Walking in The Halls (Get WITH It). The popular indoor walking program starts on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, located at 835 First St., Renfrew, ON. Get WITH It runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. from Nov. 7 until April 26, 2018. “Come out for a little exercise in a warm environment,” said Marlene Lavallee, who is the coordinator and has been walking there since 2007. She said the program has been running since approximately 2006. Flag football fun
A fun tradition continued on Friday, Oct. 13 when members of the Renfrew Fire Department took on Our Lady of Fatima students in a fun game of flag football. Firefighters and students, along with fire mascot Sparky, gather for a group shot after the game. The firefighters are wearing their pink t-shirts in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Golf tourney a success JENNIFER CREEDEN
On a warm, sunny Sunday, Sept. 17 the 24th annual Laurel Rafuse Memorial Fall Classic Golf Tournament was once again a successful event. Teams enjoyed a beautiful day and a great game of golf at the Renfrew Golf Club. Everyone celebrated the fact that for the first time in years the weather was on our side and the importance of being part of such a valuable charitable tournament. The money raised each year at the Laurel Rafuse Memorial Golf Tournament enables children and youth with developmental disabilities to have the opportunity to experience a variety of activities like fishing, swimming, rafting, museum tours and afternoons at the park, to mention a few. Most importantly, they get to do this with the proper support and staffing in place to make it a fun, safe and successful summer camp experience. These programs would not exist for these children and their families without the generous support of everyone associated with this tournament. THANK YOU We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their overwhelming support shown to our family after the devastating farm fire that destroyed the machine shed, heifer barn and dairy barn on September 8th. At this time, we would like to say a special thank you to the local farmers, our family and friends who helped us the day of the fire and the following Monday and Tuesday with the clean up. In addition, thank you to the farms that are generously housing our remaining cattle that have been displaced. Unfortunately we cannot thank everyone individually as we had an amazing outpouring of support from our family, the community, fellow farmers, city folks, rural communities, parishioner’s of St. Monica’s, neighboring associations, local schools our children attended and people from across the province. Thank you for the phone calls, cards, letters, visits, prayers, food, gifts and financial support given to us. We would also like to thank the organizers of the Gofundme page and the organizers of the Blackrapids Farmfest event. We are forever grateful for the kind generosity shown to us by so many people. Thank you so very much.

I hear you when you laugh, And watch you as you sleep, I even place my arms around you, To calm you when you weep. I see you when you wish the days away. Begging to have me home, I try to send you signs, So you know you are not alone. Live your life, enjoy yourself, be free, And when your time on earth is through, I am here with a hug for you. Loving you always. IN MEMORIAM GREENE, Percy November 4, 1983 The blow was great, the shock severe, We little thought the end was near, And only those who have lost can tell, The pain of parting without farewell. More each day we miss you, Friends may think the wound is healed, But they little know the sorrow, That lies within our hearts concealed. Loving Mom, Brothers and Sisters

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE. The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, November 2, 2017 25
Father believed there was always a solution for everything It had been a hot summer. Many times Mother said how grateful she was that Grampa had bought us a Barnett icebox. Oak, it was. And it filled a whole corner in the kitchen. It meant we could keep our food from spoiling, and the ice it held from the ice house could be chipped and put into well water for a cold drink on a hot day. But as summer turned into fall and the days got shorter, even though it was much colder, it was still a long time before the Bonnechere would be frozen and more ice brought into the ice house. And so it was that fall day, when Father said we had to be careful, or we would run out of ice before the winter set in. The youngest of us were not allowed in the ice house in the hot summer, just in case we let in the heat. Everything was done to keep the big blocks frozen solid. The little black building was built on the north side of the barn to protect it as much as possiFOR SALE

ble from the sun, and wagonload after wagonload of sawdust was dragged from the sawmill to cover the ice. The big black tongs hung on a spike outside the building, and only Audrey or Father were the ones to bring a block into the icebox when needed. And now, Father said, it looked like we might run out of ice before the Bonnechere froze over. Now, the block in the Barnett was allowed to melt until there was nothing to prove it had ever been there. My job was to empty the basin of water that piped down when the ice melted, and I was both glad and anxious when FOR SALE

it now had to be done only every second day. Glad that I didn’t have to worry about the water filling the pan and spilling out on the floor through my neglect, but anxious, wondering where we would put our food when the ice house was empty. And the fall dragged on. The leaves had turned, fallen, were raked up and burned. And each day was sunny and warm but with frosty nights, telling us soon we would be blocked in with drifts of snow and impassable roads, but cutting ice in the river still a long way off. Mother, I knew, was worried. More than once she said to my sister Audrey, “Take the smallest blocks of ice first.” And then suddenly the weather changed. We got up one morning to temperatures that had dropped through the night, chilling the very rafters of the house. Father had stoked the Findlay Oval as always before going to bed, but by morning it had FOR SALE

burned down, and we knew, as soon as our feet hit the floor, the nice fall days were over. It would just be a matter of time before winter would close in around us. But February, which was usually the month Father took ice from the river, was still months away. I worried every day that we would run out of ice, our food would spoil and my entire family would either die of starvation or food poisoning. But Father didn’t seem to be that worried. He, as always, had a solution ... one that had been used on that farm for three generations. Out in the summer kitchen was an old table that held cans of paint, bits and pieces of wood, and other things which didn’t seem to have a home. Father moved it to the centre of the floor, took four empty tin cans, filled them with coal oil, and put one under each leg. Mother covered it with a worn piece of oilcloth, and that table became our “icebox.” Mother, whose concern was that a mouse would get FOR SALE

onto our food, was assured by Father that no mouse could climb a table leg over a can of coal oil. And so leftovers were wrapped in wax paper, then in many layers of the Renfrew Mercury, and taken out to the summer kitchen, where they either froze or were kept well chilled until used in a meal. No longer did we have to worry about running out of ice from the ice house. There were still a few blocks left for chipping into a glass of well water, but the big oak Barnett lay idle, its shelves empty, but its big door left ajar to air out until once again, it would be filled with a block of ice from the Bonnechere. Father was right. If you use your head, there is a solution for just about everything. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Dynamic Value Balanced Fund – Series T Number of Units Purchased: 23148.14815 NAV Price/Unit (as of September 30, 2017): $4.3200 Monthly Distribution Amount: $0.019**
*Actual amount may vary. **Targeted monthly distribution rates are based on the net asset value per unit of a fund as at the fund’s previous year-end. Target distributions are not guaranteed and may change at any time at the discretion of the fund’s Manager. If distributions paid by the fund are greater than the performance of the fund, distributions paid may include a return of capital and an investor’s original investment will shrink. A return of capital is not taxable to the investor, but will generally reduce the adjusted cost base of the securities held for tax purposes. If the adjusted cost base falls below zero, investors will realize capital gains equal to the amount below zero. Distributions are automatically reinvested unless an investor elects to receive them in cash. Investors should not confuse a fund’s distribution rate with its performance, rate of return or yield. Museum help needed The McDougall Mill Museum has begun the mammoth task of cleaning and storing the wedding dress collection. The floor underneath the display is in need of repairs and the space must be cleared to allow access to the floor boards. The wedding dresses span 160 years and are an important part of the McDougall Mill Museum collection. Some dresses will be sent away for professional care and restoration and others have been cleaned and ready to be packed in special boxes. This work will continue on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons this week from 1:30–4 p.m. If anyone has time to help by volunteering with this task they would be most welcome.

Club holds Swiss Team tournament MIKE NAGRODSKI
Oct. 18 saw 17 four-player teams show up for a Swiss Team tournament at the Renfrew Bridge Club. The Swiss Team format features four-player teams playing head-tohead. After each of the six board rounds, the winning teams advance against other winners, while the unsuccessful teams play each other; just like any sporting tournament. However, in Swiss Teams, the margin of victory is also extremely important. As a result, it is quite possible for a team with a mediocre win-loss record, but with a couple of large victory margins, to finish ahead of a team with a better record. Such was the fate of Vaillancourt team on Wednesday. For though they won all four of their matches, their winning margins were modest and so they were passed by two teams who had larger scoring wins. No doubt, they could feel, with some justification, that “we wuz robbed!” Congratulations to the top teams from Oct 18: 1: (2.5 wins) Ernie Berndt - Eric Brown - Rick Duncan - Leanne Cheliak; 2: (three wins) Wayne Daze - Nancy Cavanagh - Phillippa Baran - Shawn Mahood; and 3: (four wins) Ronda Vaillancourt - Lila Paddock - Ted Ambridge - Wilf Brousseau.
