One more hunter, one less hunter
Gourley’s Outdoors and Bluewave Energy hosted the eighth annual barbecue and bake sale in support of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation on Nov. 4 at Gourley’s store on Hwy. 132 to help kick off hunting season. Renfrew’s newest future hunter is Connor Sweeney at just six weeks old, pictured with his parents Derek and Amber. Derek is not going hunting this season but was on hand to help with the fundraiser. It was also the last chance to register for the Big Buck Contest, which closed on Nov. 5 with 630 entries, which is more than last year.

Calabogie bar and grill has liquor licence suspended after crash TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Days after two Renfrew Timberwolves were killed in a single-vehicle crash on Calabogie Road, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) has suspended the liquor licence of Shooters Bar and Grill for reasons of public interest and safety. Brandon Hanniman, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Oct. 27 crash and 18-year-old Alex Paquette succumbed to his injuries on the weekend. Two other 18-year-old hockey players - Ben Scheuneman and Jake McGrimmon - are recovering from their
injuries. On Oct. 30, the Registrar of the AGCO issued a Notice of Proposal (NOP) to revoke the liquor licence of Shooters Bar and Grill, in Calabogie for multiple infractions of the Liquor Licence Act (LLA), including alleged service to minors. An email from Ray Kahnert, senior advisor, communications, says the AGCO “is indeed aware of this tragic incident on Oct. 27. It is our understanding the Coroner’s Office is investigating. As a matter of practice, the AGCO works closely with local and provincial authorities in response to incidents such as these and shares information. We have been in contact
with the local Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment and the AGCO is continuing to collect information for its own regulatory review.” The alleged infractions of the (LLA) are as follows: permit drunkenness; promote immoderate consumption; licensee sell/supply liquor to apparent intoxicated person; permit apparent minor to have or consume liquor on licensed premises; fail to verify identification of apparent minor; permit removal of liquor from licensed premises and fail to maintain control over premises. An OPP release issued Oct. 30 said “police believe alcohol contributed to the crash.”
The AGCO is the provincial agency responsible for regulating the safe and responsible sale and service of beverage alcohol, under the authority of the Liquor Licence Act. Establishments that hold a licence to sell alcohol are responsible for meeting their obligations under the LLA for all activities that occur within their establishment. An establishment served with a NOP has the right to appeal the Registrar’s proposal to the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT), which is an adjudicative tribunal independent of the AGCO and part of Safety, Licensing Appeals and Standards Tribunals Ontario.
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day, we will remember them. There are numerous chances to mark those in Renfrew and across Canada who paid the ultimate sacrifice while defending the nation. The first service is on Nov. 9 at Chartwell Quail Creek Lounge at 10:30 a.m. On Nov. 10 the Bromley Veteran’s Remembrance Day Ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Michael’s School Cenotaph in Douglas. On Saturday, Nov. 11 the Renfrew Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at the Renfrew Cenotaph (at Low Square) at 11 a.m. The public is also welcome to visit the Renfrew Legion Branch 148 after the ceremony. For more information, contact the legion office at 613-432-6450. A Remembrance Day service will be held by the Cobden Legion at the cenotaph in front of the Cobden Memorial Hall, Main Street on Nov. 11. Colours will be marched on at 10:45 a.m., service begins at 11 a.m. Reception to follow in the Cobden Legion.

How we use the Internet is evolving, but can your provider keep up? We all love the Internet. Thanks to the availability of millions of new services and apps, the Internet is making it easier-than-ever to work, socialize, play, shop, learn, share, and keep ourselves entertained from our laptops, tablets, and phones. Canadians spend an average of 36.7 hours online each month, more than any other country, as we use our computers to watch movies and TV, our tablets to read, and our smartphones to browse and play. Internet usage is at an all-time high, as 89% of Canadians connect to the Internet – in fact, highspeed Internet has become so important to us that 73% of Canadians say they would be unlikely to purchase a home that didn’t have access to high-speed Internet.1 Whether you live in a small town, hamlet or village, or in downtown Toronto, Xplornet believes that all Canadians deserve great high-speed Internet. We’ve been busy improving our network to keep pace with demand, investing in our LTE network to ensure our customers can take full advantage of the online world.1
that dreaded icon spins endlessly in the middle of your screen. It can feel like you’re helpless to do anything about these problems, so you wait for the connection to improve. Why does this happen? Often, it is because of something called “peak hours.” Peak hours are times of the day when more people are online. Maybe your neighbours are streaming movies, sending emails, or just surfing the web. It is during these peak hours, when everyone is online at the same time, that some Internet service providers cannot keep up with demand and your connection becomes unreliable. Considering how important the Internet can be in day-to-day life, the challenges of a bad connection can feel endless. Our recent network improvements help solve the problem of peak hours, allowing both new and existing Xplornet customers to enjoy great high-speed Internet, even during the busiest times of the day.
Does your Internet provider give you the freedom you’re looking for?
We demand a lot of our Internet service, especially with more people online at the same time.
Whether you’re kicking back and relaxing, helping the kids with a school project, or putting in some overtime from home, Canadians are more connected than ever. Unfortunately, many of us have difficulty finding an Internet provider that can keep up, all because of where we live. As technology evolves, those who live outside of urban areas continue to be limited to what entertainment we can enjoy, how our families can
If you’re spending time online (and who isn’t these days?), you’re likely familiar with the frustration of slow connection speeds, or an Internet connection that simply doesn’t work. We’ve all experienced these problems: Netflix slows to a standstill, emails sit in your outbox, or

connect, and where we can work. Canadians should be beyond this problem, shouldn’t we? Fortunately, there are new options to make the most of our online experience, even in rural areas. Xplornet’s LTE network is expanding to reach more Canadians every day, and rural residents are benefiting from the new technology. New customers can receive incredible high-speed Internet, while existing customers will see improvements to their Internet reliability.
Outsmart slow-downs with Xplornet’s new & improved LTE network. To get ahead of slow Internet, it is important that high-speed Internet providers offer state-of-the-art technology – after all, technology changes every day and the demands on our Internet grow along with it. With recent upgrades of its towers, Xplornet’s new LTE Internet now enables residents to enjoy better-than-ever Internet service with speeds up to 25 Mbps.2 Xplornet customers can choose from a variety of data packages starting from 200GB that fit their unique needs, starting from $59.99 for the first 6 months on a 2 year term, plus a one-

The Nov. 2 special meeting of council, held to discuss a report titled Expanded Ma-te-Way Activity Centre, saw Mayor Don Eady and Coun. Andrew Evans face off over not a second ice surface, but a pool. According to the report, the aquatic facility “is not a project the Town of Renfrew can do on its own.” Eady agreed, saying public sector partners such as neighbouring municipalities, school boards, and health care groups need to be approached. “The only way I see it working is if we make it a community effort,” Eady said. “We have to do our due diligence in asking. I think we owe it to the people of Renfrew.” Evans didn’t disagree with asking others to chip in, but isn’t optimistic. The municipality of Horton won’t contribute to library services, he reminded colleagues. He added that the town ought to be prepared to go it alone or risk others turning skeptical. “Don’t expect other people to pay our bills. It won’t happen,” Evans said. “If we can’t afford to do it on our own, don’t expect others to come on board.” An intangible has to do with usage. Currently, about 120 residents use the Arnprior pool. It isn’t clear how many would use one in Renfrew. Members in attendance — including Reeve Peter Emon and Coun. Mike Coulas — took no issue with other aspects of the report. The current recreation centre would cost $2.5 million to $3 million to bring it in line with the building code. And there is limited parking, too. Over at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre, the outdoor rink isn’t worth repairing given others are nearby and climate change is causing shorter seasons. Another 51 of 54 hours of prime time ice would be used should a second ice surface be built in the centre. Ben Scheuneman and Jake McGrimmon were also involved in the crash and are recovering from their injuries. According to the team. Scheuneman continues “to fight hard and has begun recovery. It has been an unbelievably tough week and the boys are all doing their best to cope with what has happened and figure out how they will be able to go on as a team,” said a team statement via email on Friday, Nov. 3. “This certainly is that time when you need to dig deep because you never know how strong you are and they all need to lean on each other for as much support as possible. They are brothers and they will pull through this.” The team has postponed five games since the car crash and the first game back for the Timberwolves of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League will be on Friday, Nov. 10 when they host Alexandria Glens at 8 p.m. They will be honouring Paquette and Hanniman by raising their jerseys, their numbers #88 and #65, which have also been painted on the ice at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. “The boys will stand around the painted numbers in their unity circle. The hall will be open upstairs for a reception,” said the team. “This will be a Celebration of Life for the boys.” All proceeds from this game will go to the Scheuneman family for the expenses they are incurring while staying in Ottawa. GRAND ROUNDS 2017 Home Tour: Experience the beauty & magic of Christmas Ever wonder what it looks like behind the doors of some of the most beautiful homes in Renfrew at Christmas time? Looking for holiday decorating inspiration? The ladies of the RVH Auxiliary can help you out on both counts. On Sunday, November 26 you are able to take a self-guided Christmas Home Tour of seven beautiful dwellings in and around our community. This festive tour is a very important fundraiser for our hospital, say the organizers. The Auxiliar y began coordinating this popular event in 2011. “It’s a pleasure to be part of such an uplifting activity for everyone involved; all monies raised go directly to our very own
Renfrew Victoria Hospital,” notes Janie Bilson, one of the Auxiliary members. Tour participants can expect to see everything from restored historic charmers to modern, custom-built homes all decked out for the season. “The families graciously and willingly invite the community to enjoy the passion they have put into decorating their homes for the holidays. Participants have the opportunity to gaze through these charming structures and become captivated not only with their beauty, but the fascinating history of each individual house. Homeowners are very enthusiastic about sharing their stories and their love of the holiday season,” Bilson adds.
Tour passes are $25 each and available from the RVH Gift Shop, the RVH Foundation office, Aikenheads Drug Store and The Flower Factory in Renfrew, Candlewick Gift Shop in Cobden, or Audrey’s In Town Fashions in Arnprior. The event will run from 12:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. Each ticket includes a stop at the RVH Cafeteria for dessert tea and a chance
to win an original piece of artwork from Renfrew artist Diana Wakely. While at RVH, guests are invited to visit the RVH Gift Shop to take advantage of the “20% off sale” on regularly priced merchandise. For more information, contact Rose at 613-432-5220 or Shauna at 613-432-8493.
One of the homes featured on the tour is a spacious custom timber-frame design, featuring vaulted ceilings and custom furniture. It belongs to Deidra and Tom Cobus, pictured here with their children Lakyn and Layla.

OPINION
Connected to your community
Nothing veiled in Bill 62 Quebec’s Bill 62 barring those who choose to cover their face from receiving public services is, as Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson has written to Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard, an infringement of the fundamental Charter Right of freedom of individuals to express their religion in the manner they choose and discriminates against women who choose to express that freedom. But the mayor is being nice. It is much more than that – it is racism and bigotry, wrapped up in a false claim it is being done for public safety reasons. There is absolutely no evidence that covering one’s face in any way is a precursor of violent behaviour. We are somewhat disappointed in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s rather weak response to this discriminatory action by the Quebec government. He should be coming out forcefully and unequivocally against this law as he has a responsibility to defend Canadian values and to battle so-called “values” politics like this wherever it might raise its ugly head. This is not something to play politics with, worrying about winning or losing votes in Quebec. Rather, this is something that goes to the very core of our Canadian beliefs and must be opposed as strongly and firmly as possible. There is just no place in Canada for such feelings of racism, bigotry and discrimination against women. It is even more important to quash this racism and bigotry in its tracks right now, not only because of this new law in
Quebec but in light of the new Statistics Canada data about Canada’s population. The data shows that Canada is more diverse than ever, with 22 per cent of Canadians now identifying themselves as part of a visible minority. In addition, the indigenous population is growing rapidly and more and more immigrants are arriving in Canada, coming from countries like China and India rather than traditional northern European nations. These trends are going to continue, with Statistics Canada estimating that by the year 2036, visible minorities will represent more than 35 per cent of Canada’s population. This will require all those in society to be tolerant, welcoming and accepting of such rapid change. These are all traits Canadians as a whole accept today as evidenced by the recent outpouring of support for Syrian refugee families. Indeed, Prime Minister Trudeau has often remarked on this openness and tolerance of Canadians. In such a scenario and facing such a future, there is no room for the racism and bigotry that is evidenced by Quebec’s law barring public services to those who cover their faces due to their belief system. That’s why such pandering to society’s base racist instincts must be stopped now. This is a cut-and-dried issue – there is no gray area here. You either believe in fairness, equity and tolerance or you don’t. There is no place for a law like Quebec’s Bill 62.
Continued infrastructure problems plague reader To the editor:
What does a taxpayer have to do to get a known infrastructure problem fixed? Let’s see we talked to the mayor and he feels bad. Well that’s great, unfortunately how you feel doesn’t keep town sewage out of our homes. According to Mike Asselin (development and works director) there are no
problems everything works as it should. Must be mixing up Arnprior and Renfrew. Did you notice the pumps on top of Machinery Hill for the fourth time this year and let me make it clear this is sewage not stormwater, installed a back flow valve as this is the town’s answer to there problem. Well yes, I can now stop the sewage from flooding my house but can’t use any wa-

ter until I let the town know to set up their pumps on Machinery Hill. You say you have no money to make repairs, but you are all getting or have given yourself a raise how nice for you. Perhaps Instead of lining your pockets with my money you can fix our sewer problems that I also pay for. Maybe you should hold off on the new park benches for
main street that you want us to pay for! Maybe it’s time the taxpayer decided who gets a raise. Cal Scott you had my vote the last election and I’m hearing your name a lot more and yes I’d love to start paying for a pool that we cannot afford either will it come with an in-house chiropractor and free wheel alignments? There are smoother cow paths out
there than any road in town. Oh what the heck, could you also stop vacuuming the roads - the potholes just get filled up nice with the summer garbage and then you suck it out and then we all have to ask to have them filled up again. Falling out of fashion is a good thing for animals MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way
With all of the rain we have experienced this fall, many fields have become shallow lakes. While not good for farmers harvesting late crops or planting new ones, the abundance of water has benefited certain birds. Flocks of migrating dunlin, small, grey sandpipers with down-curved bills, recently briefly visited local fields on their way south, harvesting worms and other invertebrates forced to the surface in the water-saturated ground. Currently, hordes of Canada geese continue to visit the same fields, plucking plant tubers and remnants of corn from the muddy soil. Also visiting the flooded fields are flocks of ring-billed gulls. When I first started looking at birds nearly 60 years ago, these birds were rare here. Then, over the years they began making regular appearances, and eventually were present in large numbers, many nesting locally on islands and sandy shores. Ring-billed gulls, which take three

They are the smallest members of their group to nest locally. Herring gulls, larger gulls with heavier, unmarked bills, also nest here and often mingle with their smaller cousins. Both species visit fields to pluck invertebrates from the mud and water, with ring-billeds greatly outnumbering herrings.

When I was young, ring-billed gulls were uncommon in our region because they were still in the process of expanding their range eastward from the prairies. A century earlier they had been present in the east but loss of nesting habitat and human persecution devastated their numbers. Their eggs became a popular food item and encroachment on their nesting habitat was another factor in their demise. The fashion industry also played a role when women’s hats sporting white feathers became the rage. The millinery trade affected other birds. Farther south, egret populations were becoming decimated because of the hat industry. The long, white feathers by these beautiful birds were particularly prized. Egrets became so rare that many people were worried that they might become extinct. Then, eminent conservationists including the National Audubon Society lobbied to stop the slaughter of egrets and other birds for the fashion industry, By 1910 protection of birds in many states was instigated. Today, the logo of the National Audubon
Society still bears the image of a great egret, a visual reminder of the reason for the formation of this famous group. In Canada, a similar conservation group was never formed but the 1917 Migratory Birds Convention Act offered gulls and other migratory birds legal protection. Soon gull populations began to rebound. In the Great Lakes, the proliferation of rainbow smelt and alewife, small, non-native fish, provided new food resources and soon ring-billed gulls recolonized those huge water bodies. There is also speculation that the increase in number and size of dumps was a factor in the gull recovery. Birds were not the only animals affected by the fashion industry; our national animal faced near extinction when beaver hats became the rage in Europe. Hats off to those early conservationists who fought to end the use of bird feathers and beaver fur in the fashion industry. The Nature email is mruntz@start. ca

The local Alzheimer Society has changed its name, but not its mission
The Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County has a new name! After 35 years of supporting local families living with dementia, the local non-profit organization has changed its name to “The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County” to more properly reflect the constituency it helps and the scope of its expertise. When the organization first came into being, Alzheimer’s disease was the best known and most prevalent form of dementia. This has changed and Alzheimer’s disease is now thought to represent less than 30% of all dementias.* “Our organization has always worked with people challenged by Lewy Body, Frontotemporal, Vascular, Parkinsonian and other dementias but this has not been reflected in our name,” says Paddy Bowen, Chief Executive Director of the newly named The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County. “We are also cognizant of the growing tide of interest in dementia as reflected by the recently announced Ontario Dementia Strategy and the National Dementia Strategy.” The Dementia Society is here to help. We offer: • One to one support • Social programs • Peer support • Information and resources • Education Because no one should face dementia alone.
A vibrant mature community in Almonte.

Maintaining healthy kidneys imperative for people with diabetes
Among the numerous side effects of diabetes is damage to the kidneys. Diabetes typically damages
November is
diabetes awareness month the blood vessels in the kidneys, making it difficult for the kidneys to filter the blood as well as they can when
individuals are fully healthy. Such damage is often gradual, occurring over many years. But damage done to blood vessels over the years can eventually cause the kidneys to stop working. That only highlights the emphasis people with diabetes must place on keeping their kidneys healthy. Fortunately, there are many steps diabetics can take to keep their kidneys healthy. • Get tested. According to the National Kidney Disease Education Program, early kidney disease has no symptoms. It’s not uncommon for people to feel completely
healthy one day, only to learn the next day that their kidneys have almost stopped working entirely. While this sounds frightening, it doesn’t have to be. All it means is people with diabetes need to get their blood and urine checked for kidney disease. People with type 2 diabetes should get tested every year, while those with type 1 diabetes should get tested every year starting five years after their initial diabetes diagnosis. • Maintain low blood pressure. High blood pressure is another contributor to kidney disease. The kidneys actually help the human body control blood pressure, and it’s important for people with diabetes to maintain a low blood pressure to avoid succumbing to kidney disease. Staying physically active, eating healthy and limiting alcohol and caffeine intake are some of the many ways to maintain low blood pressure. • Monitor cholesterol levels. When diabetes is diagnosed, an individual’s doctor will discuss a number of things. A healthy cholesterol level will likely be brought up during that discussion. To maintain healthy kidneys, it’s important for individuals with diabetes to monitor their cholesterol levels and keep them in their recommended target range. An appropriate range is almost certain to be brought up by the diagnosing physician, but if it’s not don’t be afraid to bring it up. The doctor might even suggest a healthier diet that helps reduce what’s considered “bad” cholesterol. • Reduce sodium intake. Cutting back on salt is a good idea for most people, but even more so for people with diabetes. Excessive sodium intake can cause high blood pressure, which can lead to kidney disease. • Visit the doctor. People with diabetes who have their condition under control should still make routine visits to their physician’s office. As previously mentioned, kidney damage is often gradual and without noticeable symptoms. While people with diabetes might feel they have their condition under control, there might be lingering problems of which they are unaware. Catching kidney disease early can slow its progress and keep kidneys healthy for a longer period of time. To learn more about kidney disease, visit the National Kidney Disease Education Program at www.nkdep.nih.gov.
Monitoring and maintaining a low blood pressure is one way people with diabetes can keep their kidneys healthy.

‘Waste not, want not’ was the way in Mary’s household
MARY COOK
Mary’s Memories
There was no way of getting out of eating a heaping bowl full of porridge for breakfast. Mother made enough to feed half of Renfrew county. And even though it was my least favourite morning food, it was put before me, and I was expected to eat the bowl clean. If not, I would get the usual story of the starving Armenians, which meant I was supposed to be grateful that I at least had something to put in my mouth. Occasionally, and only occasionally, Mother would come home from Briscoe’s General Store with a box of Shredded Wheat. Although I was no more fond of it than I was of porridge, it was the box and the treasures inside that thrilled me to
the bone! The cereal came in an oblong box, and inside were about three layers of shredded wheat “biscuits,” divided by cardboard sheets. It was those sheets which caused me to rejoice when Mother found a few extra pennies to add this special cereal to our order. Each sheet had a different picture, usually a country scene, and sometimes an animal looking out around a tree. My sister Audrey and my three brothers thought they were much too old to be bothered with the cards from the Shredded Wheat box, and so I became the sole owner. As soon as the box came in the house, Mother would let me rip it open and remove the cards ... carefully of course, so that the biscuits wouldn’t be broken. I would get my crayons and spend
time colouring each card, and once done, they would be added to a growing collection, which I treasured, and kept securely hidden in my washstand drawer. That was because my brother Emerson threatened to fork them into the Findlay Oval when I wasn’t looking. He thought once the cards were coloured, they should be done away with. But I saved each one, and soon had a stack inches thick, held together with string. I could spend many an hour just sitting quietly with my pack of cards, looking and re-looking at them. Sometimes I would go upstairs when I had nothing else to do, and take the pile of cards out of my washstand and lay them out on the bed. I had so many that they would cover the entire quilt. The cards came with a little hole
in one corner, and if you wanted to, you could put in a piece of string through the hole. But I could never figure out what on earth, if anything, this added to the cards. The little loaves of Shredded Wheat weren’t individually wrapped, of course. They just sat one on top of the other inside the box. As well as loving the cards, I also loved it when the box was empty, and I could lay claim to it as well. It made a perfect bed for the smallest of my dolls, and I once tried to cram my new kitten into one, but she was having none of that. And when it came to eating the Shredded Wheat, like the porridge, it certainly didn’t appeal to me. Mother would pour boiling water on one of the little loaves, drain the bowl, and then add the cream and brown sugar. The rest of the family thought
it was a real treat. Of course, Father would still have to have his fried potatoes and salt pork. It didn’t take long for the Shredded Wheat boxes to become battered and so I would have to tear it down into flat pieces. It was then added to the wood box, along the side where Father kept old copies of the Renfrew Mercury and the Family Herald and Weekly Star. It too would go to help start the Findlay Oval in the morning. Like everything else that came into the house, be it from the general store, or from Renfrew, or from the garden, or the smoke house, nothing was wasted. It gave me great satisfaction to know that one of Father’s favourite sayings “waste not ... want not,” could be even applied to the Shredded Wheat boxes that on rare occasions came into our house.

The second annual Merle Haggard Tribute, hosted by Dennis Meilleur and friends Oct. 21 at the RCAF Wing, was another successful event, raising $2,400 for the Renfrew and Area Health Services Village. The sold-out event featured a number of musicians, including Kevin Sullivan, Richard Collins, Andy Taylor, Wayne and Bob Dagenais, Al Bragg and Danny Pallen.
Book launch Nov. 10
On Friday, Nov. 10, Canadian crime novelist Luke Murphy will launch his third crime-thrilling novel, Wild Card, at the Wild Card Launch Party. The event is sponsored by Hursty’s Bar & Grill (368 Rue Main, Shawville, QC), and takes place from 6-8 p.m.
Wild Card is a fast-paced, twisty international thriller laced with refreshing bouts of humor. The novel is Murphy’s third novel in the genre, and a sequel to his 2012 debut novel, Dead Man’s Hand - a new book featuring toughminded, hard-hitting Calvin Watters. Wild Card hit shelves on Oct. 14. For more information on Luke and his books, visit: www.authorlukemurphy.com .

Renfrew Timberwolves honoured on the ice at Ma-Te-Way TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Every player who skates on the ice at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre will remember. Every person in the stands will remember. They will remember Brandon Hanniman No. 65 and Alex Paquette No. 85 of the Renfrew Timberwolves of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League (CCHL2). The two Wolves players were killed in a car crash on Friday, Oct. 27. Their initials and jersey numbers were painted on the ice at the Ma-TeWay Activity Centre (MAC) on Nov. 1 by a number of the players. The blue and yellow tribute will stay on the ice for the rest of the season to honour Hanniman and Paquette. On Friday, Nov. 10, the team will stand united around the numbers on the ice and Hanniman and Paquette’s jerseys will also be raised during the Wolves’ first game back since the tragic crash. They will host the Alexandria Glens at 8 p.m. at MAC. The team is also hosting a reception in the hall upstairs - a Celebration of Life for the two killed in the crash. Ben Scheuneman and Jake McGrimmon were also injured in the collision. According to the team, Scheuneman continues “to fight hard and has begun recovery. (He) is officially listed now as stable.” All proceeds from this game will go to the Scheuneman family for the expenses they are incurring while staying in Ottawa. Since the crash, tributes have poured in from various levels of the sporting community, many standing united around the centre ice circle, others wearing their numbers on their helmets, taping their sticks blue or yellow or holding a moment of silence. “Our town, the CCHL2 and all the other hockey leagues out there have

BH 65 and AP 88 have been painted on the ice at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre in Renfrew in memory of Brandon Hanniman and Alex Paquette, both members of the Renfrew Timberwolves who were killed in a car crash on Oct. 27. The Wolves have missed five games since the players were killed. The team is set to hit the ice again on Friday, Nov. 10 when they host Alexandria at 8 p.m. been absolutely amazing and nobody could feel the love and support more than this team right now,” said a team statement on Friday, Nov. 3. “It certainly shows you, this is far more than just a game and the far reach of people and the extended hockey families that have wrapped their arms around this team will never be forgotten. #Wolfpackstrong.” The team put the #Wolfpackstrong hash tag on social media and it contin-
ues to trend this week. Kevin Abrams, CCHL2 commissioner, says all of the teams have showed a tremendous amount of compassion toward the Timberwolves. “We are all connected. The CCHL1, CCHL2 and the midget league, they have all made gestures,” said Abrams. “It was really touching to see, it’s wonderful. It shows the hockey community is small and the sporting community is small.”
Abrams said he never had the chance to meet Hanniman and Paquette himself. “But the outpouring shows they were special kids and they touched a lot of people,” said Abrams. On Nov. 2, the CCHL2 was honoured to announce Paquette as the player of the month and Hanniman the rookie of the month for October. “I was happy to see the teams nominate Alex and Brandon for these hon-
ours,” said Abrams. The press release noted that Paquette was in his third season with the Timberwolves and scored six goals and one assist through nine games in October, “the most productive month of his CCHL2 career.” Hanniman, a rookie forward who spent the past two seasons with the Renfrew Major midget team, scored his first career CCHL2 goal on Oct. 4.

Target distributions are not guaranteed and may change at any time at the discretion of the fund’s Manager. If distributions paid by the fund are greater than the performance of the fund, distributions paid may include a return of capital and an investor’s original investment will shrink. A return of capital is not taxable to the investor, but will generally reduce the adjusted cost base of the securities held for tax purposes. If the adjusted cost base falls below zero, investors will realize capital gains equal to the amount below zero. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Renfrew Curling Club has decent start to season ANDY SKLEPOWICZ & MARG DAWSON
The first cash spiel of the year took two Renfrew teams to Pembroke and tricky ice conditions. Although playing well for a first competition, both missed the really big money at the end of the weekend. The team of Gary Smith, Dave Eady, Brian Yolkowskie and Jim Berg defeated the Warren rink in a great game in an extra-end 7-6 (with hammer), sending them to the B side. In game two, they defeated Harv Robertson (Pembroke) 6-2 in six ends. In the A semi-finals they lost to Paul Bourne (Pembroke), 8-4. The Rob Warren foursome with Don Rouble, Rory McKay and Andy Humphries defeated Rick Duncan
(Pembroke) 10-0 in six ends after their loss to Smith. In the B championships, they defeated Carl Zieroth (Pembroke) 7-5 by taking a deciding three-ender in the seventh after being tied 4-4 after six. Renfrew hosted the first round of the Low Cup and took on Arnprior in the day’s action. The games on the previous weekend obviously prepared the teams as the lineups were made up of almost the same bodies. The Warren rink played two nailbiters, winning 9-7, down one coming home with hammer. In game two, they gave up four in fourth but took four in fifth and finally won 9-8, tied coming home with

hammer. Andy Humphries played well, setting up key ends with well-placed shots. The other Renfrew team of Dave Eady skipping, Gary Smith, Jim Berg and Bernie Leclaire won game one handily, 10-2, and in the afternoon lost 8-7, tied after seven without hammer. A result of three out of four is usually a great start but Pembroke swept Deep River and came out on top with 42 points to Renfrew’s 32.5. Marg reports from the Autumn Leaves played in Renfrew that Renfrew “A”, skipped by Yvonne Sklepowicz, third Laurie Millar, second Anne McNeil and leads Marie Ed-

wards (morning) and Joan Eaton (afternoon), lost their morning game against Killaloe “B” 6-7. Things went better in the afternoon against Killaloe “A” with Renfrew winning 12-4. Renfrew “B”, skipped by Shelley Jamieson, third Marg Dawson, second Louise Jamieson and leads Theresa Mann (morning) and Eliana McKay (afternoon), came up short in the morning despite taking five ends against Arnprior “A”, losing 7-8. Things were different in the afternoon against Pembroke “A”, with Renfrew winning 8-1. Barb Roy, Ann Forgie and Sue Hanniman served a wonderful lunch which everyone enjoyed.

BURWELL, William "Bill" Bruce March 14, 1929 – November 1, 2017 Dr. William Burwell, Dr. Bill, as he was affectionately known by his patients, passed away quietly at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital on November 1, in his 89th year. He will be greatly missed by his muchloved wife Bonnie who he married in 2009, and with whom he shared a great passion for the outdoors. Bill was cherished by his 4 children Douglas (Gayle Crooks), Katherine Lyn, Robert (deceased in 2012), Cindy (Rich Verboon) and his grandchildren Laura, Kristine, Emma, William, Matthew & Adam and his 2 great-grand children Jacey and Hayden. He was a wonderful friend and father figure to his 5 step-children Sarah Wright, Jobie Eldridge, Joshua Eldridge, Emily Eldridge and Bronwyn Eldridge (Ryan) Bradley and their respective children Jessie Wright, Morgen Wright, Charlie Eldridge, Jax Bradley and Harper Bradley. Bill was born in Renfrew, March 14, 1929, and attended Renfrew Collegiate Institute before continuing his studies in medicine at McGill University, where met his first wife Ruth (who passed away in 1994). After graduating in 1952, he spent a few years interning in England and Hamilton, Ontario, before returning to Renfrew to start his family and begin his medical practice, following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. George Burwell. A caring, benevolent, and much-loved doctor, he served as chief of staff at RVH and cared for patients there for over 50 years. He continued to practice medicine from his home for a few special patients until 2014. Bill was also part of the medical staff for 38 years at Bonnechere Manor, and in 2009 he was awarded honorary chairman of the Bonnechere Manor’s Auditorium Fundraising campaign. An active member of the local community he served for several years on the Industrial Commission. Since a child, Bill had a passion for all things steam powered, and for years he organised an annual Steam Show at his “farm” on Fraser Road near Burnstown, to the delight and benefit of the local community. With his steamboat the Puffin, he participated in, and sometimes organised, an annual Steamboat flotilla. Over the past 5 years he continued this passion, along with a great group of friends, to build a replica Alligator Steam Tug Boat, which he was thankfully able to see launched for its inaugural trip up the Ottawa River in September. Bill was predeceased by his parents George and Devee, his first wife Ruth, his brother Robert (Bob) and his son Robert as well as several great childhood friends. Bill was a wonderful and compassionate doctor, a great friend to many and he had a gift for reciting poetry and telling jokes. His loss will be felt not only by Bonnie and his family, but to the many people he cared for. He will be particularly missed by his long-time dear friends, Terry Fisher, Bill Chown, and Barb Carrier. The family would like to thank Dr. Max Buxton and Dr. Nemani, as well as the Renfrew Victoria Hospital nurses and staff, who showed him great care and respect in his final week. Visitation at McPhail & Perkins Funeral Home on 85 Munroe Avenue E, Renfrew Ontario, on Tuesday, November 7, from 2pm – 4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral service will be held at Trinity-St. Andrews United Church on Wednesday, November 8, at 11 am followed by a private family Interment at Thomsonville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bonnechere Manor or Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Condolences and donations may be made at mcphailandperkins.ca

IN MEMORIAM
In loving memory of KEVIN McMILLIAN Oct 1958 - Nov 2015 Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartache, When someone speaks your name, Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, Living without you is the hardest part of all, You did so many things for us, Your heart was so kind and true, and when we needed someone, We could always count on you, To special years will not return, When we were all together, But with the love in our hearts, You walk with us forever. Love Mom and Dad _____________________ In loving memory of KEVIN McMILLAN October 1958 November 2015 “The Big Guy”
Miss ya Buddy, Jake _____________________ In loving memory of Kevin McMillan “The Big Guy” Oct. 1958 - Nov. 2015 They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel, For no one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried, We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without. Loved and Always Missed, Keith and Marg
who passed away November 9, 2015 Although we smile and make no fuss, No one misses him more than us, And when old times we often recall, It’s then we miss him most of all. May the winds of love blow softly and whisper so you’ll hear, We love you, miss you, And wish you were here.... Those we love don’t go away, They walk with us every day Love you forever, June and Family

In loving memory of a precious wife, mother, mother in law and granny who passed away 27 years ago on Remembrance Day. We are sending you a dove to Heaven with a parcel on its wings, Be careful when you open it, It’s full of beautiful things, Inside are a million kisses, wrapped in a million hugs, To say how much we miss you, And to send you all our love, God called your name so gently, That only you could hear. No one heard the footsteps, of the Angel drawing near... Softly from the shadows, There came a gentle call, You closed your eyes and went to sleep, You quietly left us all. We hold you close without our hearts, And there you will remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again. Loved and missed every day, Channel and families
