Horton seeks $2 million to rebuild Thomson Road Steve Newman steve.newman@metroland.com
News - Horton Township is seeking $2 million, from the new Small, Rural and Northern Municipal Infrastructure Fund (SRNMIF), to fix a dilapidated Thomson Road. Earlier this year, Jp2G Consultants Inc. assessed the condition of Horton’s roads and determined that Thomson Road required the most attention, followed in order by Fraser Road and Thompsonville Road. It’s “hugely important” that Horton gets the grant, largely because of
the condition of the road and two of its culverts, said Coun. Glen Campbell, who chairs Horton’s public works committee. “Right now the road’s infrastructure is failing, and it needs attention.” If the application is successful, Horton would spend $750,000, of which about $500,000 would be covered by a debenture. “There’s good debt and there’s bad debt, and this would be the good kind,” said Campbell. Horton would use the grant to reconstruct the worst 1.5 kilometres of
the road that’s more than five kilometres long. The remaining work would include resurfacing and culvert replacement. “Thomson Road has been identified as our number one priority under our draft asset management plan, which will finalized by the end of the year,” said Horton chief administrative officer Mackie McLaren. “It’s a road that we know is in need of repair. It was constructed in ’72 or ’73, so it has now outlived its useful life. And it’s a connecting link between Highway 17 and the Ottawa River, so it’s a well-travelled road,”
added McLaren. In recent years, two major culverts have been replaced on Thomson Road, but other culverts now require serious attention, say township officials. Also, County of Renfrew is planning to rebuild Lochwinnoch Road, which intersects Thomson Road, in the near future. The condition of Thomson Road is plain to see, with alligator tracking, heaving and depressions, noted McLaren. See THOMSON ROAD, page 14
