Timberwolves thank community for outpouring of support Sherry Haaima sherry.haaima@metroland.com
Following a touching tribute at Friday night’s game for two Renfrew Timberwolves killed in an Oct. 27 car crash on Calabogie Road, the Central Canada Hockey League Tier 2 team has expressed its thanks for the out-
standing support from the community. Brandon Hanniman and Alex Paquette’s jerseys were raised in a ceremony at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre Nov. 10 before the Wolves’ game versus Alexandria. Team members Jake McGrimmon and Ben Scheuneman were also injured in the crash and are recovering.
Scheuneman remains in hospital with serious injuries. McGrimmon was in attendance at the game and joined his teammates on the ice for the tribute. Ma-Te-Way was packed for the special event, which included a Celebration of Life in the community hall. “They will be forever remembered in our hearts as two wonderful young
men,” said local radio personality Jon Pole, who emceed. “We know they are smiling down, cheering us on while skating right along with us each and every game.” Pole noted Scheuneman continues to make positive strides with his recovery in the hospital. “We ask that you all continue to keep him in your prayers,” he said.
“Thoughts and well wishes are sent to the McGrimmon family for number 62 Jake McGrimmon with his upcoming surgery on Wednesday. “He too has a long journey ahead and we are confident with everyone’s support, he will make a full recovery.” The crowd on hand spoke to the community’s strength, he said. “Having this rink full tonight is a true testament to how much our small community bands together,” said Pole. “We are all wolf-pack-strong, we are all Renfrew-strong.” The team made a unity circle around Hanniman and Paquette’s numbers #65 and #88 painted on the ice for the jersey raising. They were later joined in the circle by the Alexandria players. Coach Corey Foster and president Derek McGrimmon joined the teams on the ice to raise the jerseys. The songs Hunting, Fishing, Loving Every Day by Luke Bryan and Rock Star by Post Malone were played as the jerseys were raised to the rafters. Saturday, the Timberwolves released this statement: “The Renfrew Junior Timberwolves and our families were overwhelmed by the heartwarming support received at our first home game on Friday, Nov. 10. This was a wonderful tribute to all our players and an evening everyone will forever remember in their hearts. “We would like to extend our sincere thanks for the enormous support and generosity provided by our community, surrounding areas and our extended hockey families. Your kindness has brought the family in excess of $10,000, and due to this massive support, the Scheuneman family has graciously decided to provide a portion of the proceeds to the Hanniman and Paquette families. “We will never be able to thank everyone enough for all the support, love and prayers that have been received as the whole community wrapped their arms around The Renfrew Junior Timberwolves family. Each and everyone one of you have left a mark on our hearts. #Wolfpackstrong” The Wolves won the game 5-2, see page 21 for more.

Shooter’s files appeal for liquor licence

A local bar and grill is fighting back after losing its liquor licence. Last week, Shooter’s Bar and Grill appealed the Register of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) order to the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT) that suspended the licence. Following an Oct. 27 single-vehicle collision on Calabogie Road that killed two 18-year-old Renfrew males and injured two others, the Registrar of the AGCO on Oct. 30 issued a Notice of Proposal (NOP) to revoke the establishment’s liquor licence for multiple infractions of the Liquor Licence Act (LLA). The alleged infractions of the LLA include: · Permit drunkenness · Promote immoderate consumption · Licensee sell/supply liquor to apparent intoxicated person · Permit apparent minor to have or consume liquor on licensed premises · Fail to verify identification of apparent minor · Permit removal of liquor from licensed premises · Fail to maintain control over premises “In the meantime the suspension of the liquor licence remains in place,” said Ray Kahnert, senior advisor, Communications and Corporate Affairs Division of the AGCO in an email statement. “An establishment can choose to remain open to serve food and non-alcoholic drinks.” Shooter’s was closed for a number of days after the crash but has since reopened with regular business hours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. At this time the Renfrew Mercury has been unable to reach the manager of Shooter’s for comment. A public hearing will be held in Ottawa and will be confirmed by the LAT. The AGCO had been in contact with the local detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) after the crash. Brandon Hanniman died at the scene of the crash and Alex Paquette succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Two other 18-year-old males, Ben Scheuneman and Jake McGrimmon, are recovering from injuries sustained in the collision. “The investigation has revealed the vehicle was travelling northbound towards Burnstown when it left the roadway and struck a rock cut,” said an OPP press release on Oct. 30. “Hanniman was driving the vehicle at the time. Three occupants were ejected from the vehicle. Police believe alcohol contributed to the crash.” The corner is currently leading the investigation with the assistance of the OPP. “We are currently waiting for test results to come back from the Centre of Forensic Sciences,” said OPP Const. Janice Sawbridge. “There is no timeline at this point as to when the results will be back.”

Dave Lemkay is the current executive director of the RIC and had known Burwell since 1974. “Bill was a seasoned advocate for all things good in the community of Renfrew,” said Lemkay. “Renfrew has lost a senior statesman. Bill was a devoted physician and a skilled surgeon, he was a doctor who made rounds and house calls, he was devoted to his patients.” Lemkay recalls that Burwell was a sage voice on the board when a decision needed to be made. “Bill’s voice was always one of

Burwell had a passion for all things steam-powered and for years organized a steam show on his property and would donate any money raised to the hospital, noted Lemkay. Over the past five years, he along with friends built a replica Alligator Steam Tug Boat that made its inaugural trip on the Ottawa River in September. Lemkay called Burwell a close friend but also notes he was a good friend to everybody.
“He was a pillar of the community and instrumental in town,” said Lemkay. “He was an avid hunter and fisher and an all-around good guy. OPINION
Connected to your community
Stay safe this hunting season Hunting season is upon us and the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) encourages hunters to learn and adhere to the following list of rules when hunting. All hunters must wear solid hunter orange clothing (a minimum of 400 square inches or 2,580 square centimetres above the waist) and a hunter orange head cover during gun seasons for deer, moose and elk. Outside the gun seasons for deer, moose and elk these requirements also apply to bear hunters who are not hunting from a tree stand. Handle firearms with care and attention at all times. Hunters must never shoot unless they are absolutely sure of their target and what lies beyond it. It is illegal to shoot from a vehicle or carry a loaded firearm in or on a vehicle, to discharge a firearm from or across the travelled portion of a right of way for public vehicular traffic. In many parts of Ontario it is also illegal to have a loaded firearm, or discharge a firearm, in any part of the right of way. Firearms must be unloaded and safely secured (in a locked cabinet with a lock on
the trigger) when not being used and ammunition must also be safely secured and stored. Failing to do so is against the law! And above all else, never drink alcohol and hunt. General safety planning • Tell someone where you will be hunting and when you will be returning; • Know the weather conditions in your hunting area and dress accordingly; • In an emergency, stay calm and stay put; • Avoid hypothermia. Know how to treat it if it strikes; • Keep hydrated and well nourished; • Carry a survival kit and a small first aid kit with you at all times; • Know how to build a fire in all weather conditions and carry the supplies to start one; and, • Carry a map and compass or GPS unit and know how to use them. To report unlawful night hunting or any other illegal and unsafe hunting activity, call the MNRF TIPS Line at 1-877-8477667 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

I miss free speech in Canada To the editor:
When we look around the world at different countries, I think most of us lucky enough to call Canada home would agree that liberal democracy is one of the better forms of governments to live under. We are quite free to live as we please as long as we don’t infringe on others’ rights. One of the central ideas in a liberal democracy is freedom of speech. Without it I am sure a liberal democracy could not survive. Of course, we have to limit some types of speech. You can’t defame someone, use hate speech, use

speech to incite violence and you can’t yell fire in a crowded theatre. Free speech is under severe threat in the west from both the left and right. If you have an opinion that is the least bit controversial you better not express it or you will be attacked and called ugly names. Actually, even mentioning certain topics is a no-no today. Political correctness has gone crazy and now serves to constrain healthy debate. For example immigration is controversial. We bring in about 250,000 immigrants and refugees a year to this
country (soon to be 340,000.) If I was to suggest we should have a vigorous debate about the size of this number-Is it too many, too few or just about right? What are the benefits to us and what are the costs? Do we gain economically or lose? Do we need to keep increasing our population or is just maintaining it preferable? If we agree diversity is a good thing, is it worth the pressures on the social fabric and cohesion? Are we diverse enough? Should we jail then deport immigrant doctors who perform female genital mutilation? Should we spend more resources helping larger numbers of people in their home countries? Just to ask these types of questions will get you attacked by the liberal left, es-
pecially. They will likely go “nuclear” by calling you names including bigot, racist , fascist etc. The proponents of political correctness have gone too far if they use it to discourage free speech. If university professors have a list of subjects that can’t be discussed in class we have a problem. The practice of disinviting speakers at universities is counterproductive. Whether it is Milo, Obama, Ann Coulter, or Charles Murray it may be better for our democracy to let them speak. To have a functioning liberal democracy we cannot ban speech that is deplorable to us. We must have outlets for listening to these ideas and countering them with logic, science and facts. To listen to these

ideas we deplore does not mean we endorse them. On the contrary we know our ideas are defensible and theirs are not. A great example is when Columbia University invited the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad , to speak at Columbia. They obviously knew his views on the Holocaust, the wiping Israel off the map etc. He came, he spoke, they listened and Columbia won the battle of ideas. One great example was when asked why Iran persecuted homosexuals. His response “In Iran we don’t have homosexuals like in your country (laughter). We don’t have that in our country (booing)? Need for aquatic facility spans 50 years To the editor: On Nov. 14, Renfrew council is about to make a commitment of taxpayers’ money in the term of a 30-year debenture in order to provide a second ice surface. In effect this debenture will eliminate the municipality’s financial ability to build an aquatic centre for the next 30 years. The rationale for an additional ice pad is excess demand. In almost all arenas except Renfrew, prime time ice rental is considered to be 73 hours per week. In Renfrew our municipality is only able to rent out 53 hours of prime time. When asked how come the additional 20 hours of prime time was not rented I was told that the people did not want to use that time. This would suggest that in fact there is no excess demand by local organizations. The proposal for second ice users indicates that there would be 53 hours of rentals of which 30 hours would be taken up by organizations outside of Renfrew. It would seem that a lot of smoke and mirrors is going on here to try and justify this move. An aquatic facility has been a community need for over 50 years as evidenced by the many surveys, feasibility study and master plan. When this need is brought forward the usual excuses and innuendo as to why the municipality cannot proceed are simply restated. Cost comparisons are made to two old and outdated facilities in
the valley. As well, some members of council like to indicate that they don’t know who the users are and indicate blindly that they don’t know what the cost would be or that we can’t afford an aquatic facility. Not once has any council put any concerted effort into researching what a new modern aquatic facility would cost to operate. There are lots of fine examples in the province that operate at a way less cost than the outdated valley facilities. At a recent council meeting a councillor indicated he didn’t know who the users might be. Using the recent master plan, which states that 78 per cent of the population indicated a need for a pool, let me try and put the number of users into some perspective. The population of Renfrew is supposed to be 8,500 people. So if 78 per cent of the population has expressed the need for an aquatic centre, that amounts to 6,630 residents. Now we all know that not all of these people will use an aquatic facility. However I would suggest that at least 50 per cent of these people would use an aquatic facility. That would amount to 3,315 local users. Some of these users would not use an aquatic facility on a regular basis. However, I would suggest that at least 50 per cent of these taxpayers would use an aquatic facility on a regular basis. This would amount to 1,657 regular users who would purchase a yearly membership.

These numbers only reflect local Renfrew users. It does not take into account the number of residents in the surrounding communities who would make use of an aquatic facility. Part of the many proposals for an aquatic facility included a therapeutic pool component. It would be the only therapeutic pool facility in the whole valley. This in itself would draw a tremendous number of users to our facility. Communities with a therapeutic pool in their aquatic facility indicate that this component is their major
revenue generator. The proposal that is being put forward to council for the enhancement of recreation facilities in the town is designed for the elite few. It will do nothing for the vast majority of taxpayers who have a need other than another skating surface. The way this proposal has come about has shown a complete lack of leadership in dealing with the recreational needs of our community as identified by the taxpayers of Renfrew. It really is time to rethink who we want looking after our tax dollars in the future. Glen Goslin Renfrew

To the editor: Since the vehicle crash on the Calabogie Road, like so many others, I have felt sadness at the deaths of two teenagers and injury to the other two passengers. My heart goes out to the victims’ families and friends. Today my sadness at the tragedy is being mixed with anger. My anger is directed solely at the bar where prior to the crash, the boys were allegedly, illegally sold and served alcohol. On Nov. 1, media reported that Shooter’s Bar and Grill in Calabogie has been charged by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, (the organization that has the authority to enforce the Ontario Liquor Licence Act, LLA) with seven offences related to violation of the LLA.
When I worked for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, I focused on the safe and legal service of alcohol. So I’m very familiar with how LLA works and how bars too often ignore following its rules and regulations. The consequences of not complying with the law can be dire and tragic. So by considering the seven infractions attributed to Shooter’s and my knowledge of the LLA, it’s relatively easy to piece together Shooters’ likely role in the crash that took place. What makes me so upset is that according to the nature of the charges, the crash was preventable. Drinking establishments have a responsibility under the LLA to deny service and stop someone who is im-

“In Iran we do not have that phenomenon. I don’t know who’s told you that we have it.” You can imagine the laughter. Was it not better to let him speak than to ban him? Let Holocaust deniers and their ilk have their say then verbally destroy them and show them for the fools they are as the Holocaust for example is obviously one of the most documented events in human history. Democracy needs robust debate. If we continue to undermine free speech the future may be very different for our children. Democracy cannot survive without it. I miss free speech!

Safety was the focus of a recent boot camp for local employees. The second annual Health and Safety Boot Camp at the Horton Community Centre Oct. 25, welcomed 50 people, including former Ottawa police chief and current Sen. Vern White. The event was the result of a partnership between the Renfrew County Community Futures Development Corporation (CFD) and the Eastern Ontario chapter of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE). Paul Curtis, chair of the CFD, welcomed the large crowd and hoped the day would be filled with networking and building collaborative partnerships. “Leading workplace safety in Renfrew County is rooted in the idea of helping business and organizations in the area develop sustainable safety programs that will reduce injuries and illnesses and increase the bottom line,” said Curtis. “The goal for today is to teach organizations how to become Occupa-
tional Health (and) Safety leaders.” Sue McLaren, regional vice-president of the CSSE, was pleased there was an appetite for employers to embrace health and safety. “It’s also an opportunity to network, so they know who to go to, and a chance to gain a lot of knowledge,” said McLaren. White was the keynote speaker at the boot camp and told the crowd from across Renfrew County that his work has been in serving the community and how community issues affect health and safety. He stressed a different way of thinking to solve safety issues in the workplace. “You need to look at things different and not just different things,” said White. He shared his experience of securing $21 million in funds for two drug treatment facilities in Ottawa, calling it the most successful thing he has done. “You have to look at it different and find something different to do … we do need to take risks,” said White. He also talked about the fentanyl crisis, recruiting challenges in Nuna-

The largest single donation to the Sunshine Coach Service was recently recognized with a smile. Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign, which ran from Sept. 11 to 17, and fair fundraiser together raised $11,909 for the Sunshine Coach. “It’s absolutely incredible. “It helped us shatter our record for fundraising, putting us over the $80,000 mark (at the radiothon) for the first time,” said Norm Dagg, executive director for the Sunshine Coach Service. “The $11,909 was the largest single donation for the coach and it speaks to Tim Hortons’ commitment to the community.” Dagg was thrilled to be Tim Hortons’ charity of choice. “It is partnerships like this that keep the Sunshine Coach viable,” said Dagg. “The money raised in Renfrew is to help people living with disabilities in our community.” The money was earmarked towards the purchase of a new Sunshine
Coach vehicle. Local Tim Hortons store owner Donald Carty calls the Sunshine Coach a worthy cause. “It is a much-needed service in our community for people living with disabilities,” said Carty. “My mom is a frequent user of the service, and it is just fabulous.” Richard Dean, general manager at Tim Hortons, is proud of his team from both Renfrew locations: 780 O’Brien Rd. and 383 Stewart St., which made 8,278 cookies. At the Renfrew Fair, 100 per cent of the sales from the Tim Hortons coffee truck also went to support the Sunshine Coach. At the truck, $3,631 was raised and, specifically from the cookies, $8,278 was raised. “All of us at Tim Hortons and the Sunshine Coach would like to thank the community for buying the cookies and our employees who worked so hard in supporting the campaign,” said Dean. The 2018 charity of choice for the Smile Cookie Campaign is Hospice Renfrew, and the cookies will be back in mid-September.

Renfrew refugee family marks first year in Canada Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
What a difference a year makes. For Ammar Hriz and Wiaam Aldakhil, it has been life-changing. The Syrian refugees arrived in Renfrew on Nov. 1, 2016, with their two-year old son, Elian. On Aug. 31, the couple welcomed the safe arrival of their second son, Sharbel, at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. He weighed in at a healthy eight pounds and 14 ounces. “I’m very happy,” said Ammar. The St. Francis Xavier and Our Lady of Fatima parishes sponsored the family, and on Nov. 1, they celebrated the one-year anniversary of their growth with a dinner combining Syrian and Canadian flavours. “It’s been a wonderful year and we are all excited,” said Joan Lemay, one of the members of the committee. “It’s been a wonderful experience — a year is not a long time to get accustomed.” This is the group’s second sponsorship; they welcomed Baraa Hreiz to Renfrew on Sept. 22, 2016, and he is now living in Kanata with other relatives. They have also been able to welcome other extended family members to Renfrew, including Wiaam’s father and mother, who had been living in Sherbrook, Que. “I’m very happy; it’s really good to have my family here,” said Wiaam. “They have been a big help to the family,” added Lemay. Ammar is currently working sorting recycling at Beaumen Waste Management. “I like it at Beaumen’s,” he said. Wiaam’s father and brother are also working there. “They are working so hard,” said Lemay. “Beaumen’s must be so happy to have them.” The parishes helped with two large showers for the new baby over the summer and have been a huge support to the family. “They have helped me with everything with the baby and (going) to the doctor. They helped me a lot and I am very thankful,” said Wiaam. “We are very thankful for the support.” Lemay recalled it was a very touching moment to watch Wiaam’s father with his new grandchild. “Her father was very emotional to welcome
them in a safe country; they have done so well,” said Lemay, who has a special bond with the new baby. “He’s just amazing. He smiled at me three times. He’s Canadian and I am Canadian, and he knew what I was saying.” Over the summer, the family shared numerous new Canadian experiences. They also worked with a group of retired teachers six hours a week to improve their English skills. “The biggest challenge is there is no government program for (an) English as a second language course in this area,” said Lemay. “We are fortunate there are lots of dedicated volunteers who have done a lot of work to help them with their English.” After they are proficient at a certain level of English, they can enrol in the local adult education programs. They have also spent time at Kids Corp. and other local programs, immersing themselves in the community and Canadian culture. Ammar enjoyed fishing in Calabogie and Cobden, catching bass, pike and catfish. “They love to fish and have a big barbecue,” said Frank Belanger, another committee member. The family also enjoyed going to the splash pad at Ma-Te-Way Activity Park and spent time at a cottage. “It’s really wonderful, they have fit in so well and they are working so hard,” said Belanger. “They are so sociable and hospitable.” “They are just such a close-knit family,” added Lemay. The churches were obligated under the sponsorship agreement to support the family financially for one year. “They are our friends and like family, and we will always wonder how they are doing,” said Lemay. “The kids are changing all the time … they are part of my family.” “Everyone at the church is my family,” added Ammar. They are now headed into their second winter in the valley. “Winter was not very nice,” said Ammar with a smile. However, winter is a minor worry compared to life in Syria. For Wiaam, the best part of the last year is her new son. “The best part is he is Canadian. It is special that he’s Canadian.”

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

May 11, 1926 - November 9, 2017 Unexpectedly, the evening of November 9th, after a long battle with many health issues, our dear sweet mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend Helen Wilson passed away. She lived to a ripe old age of 91, but the fullness of her life does not lessen the emotional blow upon those of us who she has left behind - we love her dearly and miss her already. One of the few comforts that we draw at this time is that she did not pass away alone, or in a hospital, but at home with those who loved her. The day of her passing was the day before her wedding anniversary and we are confident that she is now spending her anniversary with her beloved Burt Wilson. Her living loved ones include: son Duane Wilson, daughter-in-law Millie Wilson, daughter Marjorie Wilson, son Jim Wilson, daughter-inlaw Ruthann Wilson, daughter Catherine Wilson, son-in-law Terry Swaine, son Rob Wilson, brother Hugh Baxter, sister-in-law Grace Baxter, brother Maxwell (Max) Baxter, many many grandchildren, many greatgrandchildren, great great-grandchildren and countless friends that she considered loved ones. Her loved ones that have gone before her include: the late Melvin Baxter (brother), the late Henry & Maxine Baxter (brother & sister-in-law), the late Ownie & Bubbles Baxter (brother & sister-in-law), the late Florence and Lloyd Baxter (sister & brother-in-law), the late Steve Orr (son-in-law), and the late Claudette Wilson (daughter-in-law). Helen was the daughter of Annie and Thomas Baxter of Tehkummah, Manitoulin Island, Ontario. She was an exceptional woman with a heart for her family, a dignity and grace that is rare, and the strength, wisdom, fortitude, kindness and caring of a true Matriarch. Friends may join the family during visitation at the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior (613-623-5194) on Tuesday evening, November 14th from 6 to 7:45 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted in the Pilon Family Chapel on Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock. A Homecoming visitation will take place in Fairview United Church, Tehkummah, Ontario on Saturday November 18th, 2017 from 9 to 10 a.m. and where a Funeral Service will be conducted at 10 o’clock. Interment will follow at the Hilly Grove Cemetery, Manitowaning, Ontario.

God saw you getting weary Dad, The hill was steep to climb, He put his arms around you, And whispered “Peace by thine” The family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God takes us one by one, That chain will link again.
Lovingly remembered forever. Yours
Our love always, Dad! Your three sons, Larry, Don, and Dave

Little did we know that morning God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us precious memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS Lovingly remembered by your wife Kathleen, children Bev, Marie, Janie, Kathie, James and Donnie and their families.

They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel, In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still, In my heart I hold a place, That only you can fill. Life is not forever, Love is... Lovingly remembered, Your Wife Bonnie

ARMSTRONG, Krista Sherry-Lynn December 23rd, 1975—November 18th, 2012 We can’t believe it has been five long years Since we last felt joy and shed no tears Can’t believe it has been awhile Since we heard your laugh or saw your smile But yet we know it has been that long Since the Angels took you from where you belong Since we got the call that parents fear That we lost a child we held so dear We hold you close within our hearts And there you will remain To walk with us throughout our lives Until we meet again We must endure until that time It is in the hands of fate Just be sure we’ll see you then When we meet at Heavens’ gate Words cannot express how much you are missed everyday And the joy you brought to all our special occasions Wishing you an early Happy Birthday – All Our Love and Hugs Mom, Dad and Kristopher Armstrong
Hard to believe, Seems like only yesterday, Her gentle smile and patient face, with sadness we recall, She had a kindly word for each, and died beloved by all, Her voice is mute, and stilled her heart, That loved us well and true, Ah bitter was the trail to part, From one so good as her, You are not forgotten loved one, Nor will you ever be, As long as life and memory last, We will remember thee, We still miss you now, our hearts are sore, As time goes by we miss you more, Your loving smile, your gentle face, No one can fill your place, Forever in our thoughts and always in our hearts, William J. and Family

Much work was done to keep log house warm during long winter months Watching Mother get the house ready for the cold blasts of winter, told me that soon the fields would be blanketed with snow as far as the eye could see, and a path would lead us to the barns and the pump in the yard. The long underwear and navy blue fleecelined bloomers would be ready to replace the flour bag underpants we wore at other times in the year. But Mother, after coming from New York City, to a log house with no amenities, soon found out it took more than the heat from the Findlay Oval to keep the house warm during the long Renfrew county winters. First, she took the rag bag from behind the kitchen door, cut long strips from ragged underwear no longer fit to wear, or wool socks beyond repair, and laid everything out on the kitchen table. Then with a kitchen knife, she stuffed every window frame in the kitchen, so that not a breath of air could come in, while preventing heat from going out. When she finished, the window looked like it had been wrapped for Christmas, framed in every colour in the rainbow. Our bed sheets would be replaced with flannelette, which I thought were more than a step

up from the four flour bags sewn together to cover our feather mattresses and separate us from the tickings on top. They came from Eaton’s catalogue, and apart from their warmth, I loved the wide coloured strips on either end of each sheet. Mother would bring in from the summer kitchen the same four bricks that had been stacked out there since spring, and they would be put on the back of the cook stove after supper had been cleared away so that by the time we went upstairs to bed, they would be hot...too hot to handle, so would be wrapped in newspaper and then in a towel. Just before we crawled into bed, Mother would put the hot bricks in our beds to take away the chill that never seemed to leave the upstairs of our old log house. Sometime through the night, and I could never catch her at it, my sister Audrey with whom I shared the bed, would remove the bricks when they had lost their heat, and in the morning I would see them stacked at the stair step to be taken back down to the kitchen.
And when it was obvious that winter was here to stay, the parlour, the smallest room in the house, would be closed off. A braided rug would be rolled and placed on the floor tight to the door to keep the precious heat in MARY COOK the kitchen. The parlour would only be opened if it was our turn to host the Saturday night party, when hopefully enough heat from the kitchen would warm it up before neighbours moved in to play euchre. With no foundation under the house, the floors were always cold and drafty. Aunt Bertha, our next door neighbour showed Mother how to make simple felt slippers, which were really only two pieces of felt held together with blanket-stitching, but helped a little to keep our feet warm. But when we sat around the old pine table at night, we each had our own cushion to put under our feet as well. Father, of course, never complained about the cold house. At night he sat in the rocking chair by the stove, with his feet on the oven door. His long combination underwear served as his

pyjamas, and hand-knit socks from Mrs. Beam left his feet only when Mother forcibly removed them from his feet to add them to the Monday wash. When the serious blasts of winter finally came to Northcote, the pine table, which at other times sat in front of the window looking out to the grape arbour, was moved out from that wall, more into the middle of the kitchen when we had our meals, or after supper when we sat around it involved in the amusements that helped us wile away the time before we climbed the stairs for bed. The kitchen, the biggest room in the house, would be as warm as toast in the evening. I knew before he went to bed, Father would stoke the Findlay Oval, wait for it to catch so we wouldn’t have a flu fire, and as winter closed in around us, everything that could be done, had been done to help us through the long and bitterly cold winters of Renfrew County.

Snowshoe Hares, which are currently changing their colour to white, are responsible for the rise and fall in Lynx populations.

Helping you is what we do.
Could this be the year of the lynx? MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way
Of all the wild animals with which we share this land, none is more mysterious or seldom seen than the lynx. I recall with vivid clarity my first sighting of one of these beautiful cats. It was late August and I was walking along the Lookout Trail in Algonquin Park when suddenly I had the odd feeling that there was something in the woods to my right. I glanced over and there, not 100 feet away, was a large cat walking parallel to me. With binoculars I could clearly make out the long, black tufts adorning its ears and its grey, lithe body held up by remarkably long legs. After casually walking beside me for several minutes, the lynx came to a boulder-strewn hill and with admirable grace it effortlessly bounded up the slope and out of sight. Since then, my sightings of lynx have been brief and usually at night, all taking place in northern Ontario. This spring a few residents of Vydon Acres were thrilled to not only see but also to photograph one of these beautiful cats in their neighbourhood. Then over the past couple of months there have been no fewer than three different sightings of Lynx in Algonquin Park, all corroborated by photographs. And recently Lynx tracks were photographed very near to where the first sighting occurred. Although Algonquin contains elements of the boreal forest where Lynx are more plentiful, in addition to my encounter only a handful of sightings have been made over the years. So why suddenly have so
many Lynx sightings been reported this fall? It may well be the answer lies in the status of a very different animal, the snowshoe hare. Although lynx eat a variety of animals including red squirrels, beavers, mice and voles, their mainstay is the snowshoe hare. Hares go through dramatic population cycles on roughly a 10 to 11-year basis. The year after a peak in their population comes a dramatic crash in their numbers. It takes a few years before the hares start to rebuild their populations, but when they do they steadily increase with an exponential growth experienced in the years prior to the next crash. When hares begin to rise in numbers, so do their predators, especially lynx. But because the rise in their population lags about a year behind that of the hares, lynx are still numerous during the year of the hare crash. So to find food lynx begin to wander over greater distances, with some travelling more than 1,000 kilometres. Last year was a bumper year for hares in the North, and they may well be on a downward spin in their population. Thus, it is possible that the remarkable number of sightings in Algonquin Park involve lynx moving down from the north in search of food. Lynx remain one of my most sought-after animals to see and record on camera, so I will be heading to Algonquin at my first opportunity. Perhaps I’ll get lucky and finally fill a major gap in my photo library. Indeed, I would dearly love to photograph the missing lynx. The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca
