of the Renfrew Amateur Wrestling Club (RAWC) won’t soon forget. On Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016 Olympic gold medREGION alist Erica Wiebe was in town. Wiebe, who is from Stittsville, put on two clinics at the Renfrew Recreation Centre .COM before joining club and community members at a banquet. Sport Renfrew cosponsored the clinics. In her talk to the young wrestlers, Wiebe, 27, stressed that every moment, every practice, leads to eventual success, which was for her winning the gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Her advice to the young up-and-comers? “Even I still get nervous,” she said. “Take a deep breath in and let it go.” Her least favourite thing about wrestling? “The black eyes I sometimes get during matches.”

Renfrew marks Remembrance Day TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The day was cold and windy but it was minor compared to conditions faced by those who protected our country in the trenches. On Nov. 11, hundreds of people seemed to suddenly huddle at the Low Square cenotaph, as the wind howled knocking over some of the white crosses placed along the path. Members of Branch 148 of the Renfrew Legion were led to the ceremony by the sound of the Renfrew Highland Pipes and Drum Band followed by soldiers from DBattery 2RCHA CFB Petawawa. The Renfrew Children/Youth Chorus sang In Flanders Fields led by Jessica Belanger, accompanied by the band from Ren-
frew Collegiate Institute. As their voices sang out you could see in their faces that they were ready to: “Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.” The Valley Harmonizers also serenaded the crowd with the Battle Hymn of the Republic and Let There be Peace on Earth. Legion president Greg Walbeck led the ceremony, with Rev. Bruce Ferguson reading prayers. Silver Cross Mother Comrade Josephine Prentice was the first to lay a wreath. She said laying the wreath made her feel sad.
Prentice served in Newfoundland and Halifax during the Second World War. “I was in the photography section, I developed the pictures that the flying boys took. They took cameras up. “They crossed the Atlantic and a lot of them didn’t come back,” said an emotional Prentice after the service. Her husband Vern also served in the war as a pilot. Over 30 wreaths were placed at the foot of the cenotaph by various community groups. Young and old gathered at the cenotaph as the solemn words “We will remember them,” rang out on the day marking not only the lives lost in all conflicts but when the First World War ended on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Horton assumes Humphries Road into road system
Lest we forget Horton Township held its Remembrance Day service on Sunday, Nov. 6 at the community centre. Legion Comrade Roberta McLean, left, placed a wreath in memory of her husband Malcolm McLean and brother Harold Eady; Comrade Bruce Golden escorted her.

The work on Humphries Road has been officially completed. And the township has now assumed Humphries Road into its municipal road system now that everything has been finalized. At its regular council meeting on Nov. 1 council approved a certificate of acceptance on the work that was done. Deputy Mayor Robert Johnston, who owns the road along with his wife Julie, declared a conflict of interest during the discussion. The certificate states that the works completed on Part of Lot 10 Concession 7 in Horton, extending the road, have been completed to the township’s satisfaction. The deposit that were made to the township in July 2007 were also returned to the Johnston’s.

On Oct. 26 Coun. Dave Bennett, Johnston, and Mackie MacLaren met with Frederick Crouch, the broker of record for Gentry Read Estate at the township’s beach property on River Road. Previously, council received two appraisals on the property and council set a price of $261,500. So far they have received two offers and have rejected both. In a letter from Crouch from Oct. 28, he suggested to list the property at a starting price of $259,900, admitting “this evaluation is on the high side of the expectant sale range, but it is a realistic starting point, which will allow will allow us some flexibility when entering into negotiations.” Also on Oct. 28, Coun. Glenn Campbell, chair of the planning committee, Coun. Jamey Larone, Coun. Dave Bennett and the rest of the committee attended a visit to Mike Welsh’s property beside the beach property to view the area for Welsh’s easement/right of way. Welsh was scheduled to be a delegation to council on Nov. 15 to address the issue further. WINTER PLOWING
Council received a request from Eldon Eady to request the township consider plowing the private laneway serving 334, 413 and 414 Ferguson Road. However, the request was denied. In the fall of 2015, council had signed a contract with three different property owners stating the township would plow the laneway for 334, 413 and 414, last winter. However as per the contract they understood that winter maintenance shall not be extended beyond the 2015/2016 season. During the meeting council said the agreement was clear that it would not be continued. The chief administrative officer has been directed to respond as per the 2015 contract that winter maintenance shall not be extended. FIRE UPDATE
Horton fire chief Randy Corbin presented to council. He reported to the councillors that in October the department responded to burning brush, a truck fire, a multimotor vehicle collision and a broken natural gas line. Corbin has also appointed Allan Cole, the deputy fire chief as the chief fire official. Under the Fire Code 0. Reg. 213/07, the fire chief may appoint a member of the fire department who are assistants to the fire marshal to be chief fire officials.
The new doors at Ma-Te-Way were made possible by hard working community volunteers, who helped raise $25,000 for them.
Fundraising committee celebrates new doors at Ma-Te-Way centre Next time you enter the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre, take a moment to check out the new doors. Those doors were made possible by hard working community volunteers, who helped raise $25,000 for them. The Renfrew Recreation Fundraising Committee was founded in 1994 and consists of community volunteers from Renfrew and the surrounding townships. Glen Goslin has been the chair for the committee for nine years and before that he was the recreation director for the town for 25 years. Goslin says the committee is important because there is never enough money to address the recreation issues through tax dollars. “Our objective is to add these things to make it more user-friendly,” said Goslin. The new doors, which were recently installed are just one of many of the projects the group has helped fund. “These doors made it (Ma-Te-Way) more accessible, the shade area at the splash pad and the seats in the rink, before there were only planks,” said Goslin on some of the other projects they have helped with over the years. “These things go a long way to make recreation in Renfrew more userfriendly.” Since 2000, they have raised $258,357 for various recreation related projects. In 2016 they raised
$6,000 for ceiling tiles for the hall in the activity centre, $10,000 for the score clock at the baseball diamond and $5,000 for the new BMX park. Last year, they helped with $10,000 for the new sidewalk to the trail and $5,000 for the new television for the hall. The committee fundraises by staffing the bars on municipal property (MaTe-Way/Recreation Centre) for any special event taking place. “We could always use some more help,” said Goslin. They have four teams, each with approximately eight to 10 people who rotate through the various events such as dinners, anniversary parties, stag and does, wedding receptions and more. “There are about four to six events a year and we are always looking to add more people,” said Goslin. “All of the bar tenders are Smart Serve trained, we pay for the training and they are covered under the municipal liability insurance.” Every year the committee members and staff make recommendations on what they should fundraise for next. At their annual meeting in March they vote on the next project. For more information on the committee contact the recreation department at the town: 613-432-3131.

But when acting in large groups – such as a federal election – Americans have a tendency to put themselves ahead of what’s good for the majority. If America got its collective policies in line with the individual ethos of being generous and helpful, Donald Trump would today be a footnote in history instead of the soon-enough most powerful man in the world. Americans are kind and they are big-hearted, but they don’t want to be told whom they should help. They want to decide that themselves. And that list seems to be growing shorter. How else to explain an election victory for Trump? His economic plan rests atop a promise to make people richer through trickle-down economics – tax cuts for the rich. It’s a system that encourages you to buy a lottery ticket – yes someone will get rich, but most will get poorer. And if you don’t win and get rich, it’s your fault because you didn’t try hard enough. You were afforded every opportunity. The United States seems destined to relearn history. Trickle-down policies will rev up the economy in the short term as the rich invest and reap massive rewards. But in the longer term, the bull market will die down and all that will be left are a few people at the top with bigger cars, bigger yachts and bigger off-shore bank accounts. That high society, enriched again, will no doubt fail to take care of the most vulnerable. Health care will be privatized. Publicly funded schools will be starved for resources. Shoulda tried harder, sucker. People at the bottom will try to survive day to day. They may beg on the streets and get a few coins in their cup from a fellow American who is generous enough to share one-on-one, but for some reason can’t stand the idea of helping a whole country live better.

Successful downtown revitalization meeting held in Renfrew To the editor:
Thank you for reporting on the Ontario BIA session on the downtown revitalization in Renfrew. The meeting was excellent. I attended as president of the McDougall Mill Museum and a member of the Town of Renfrew ad hoc tourism committee. We heard lots of good examples of downtown revitalizations that went well. INSIDE

Many of them succeeded because they preserved the heritage and uniqueness that was already there. Renfrew is lucky to have beautiful heritage buildings on Raglan Street. In fact, our walkabout after the meeting with people from out of town, was filled with superlatives about what they could see. Many times they told us how lucky we are to have such beautiful buildings.
Renfrew is currently asking for input about our downtown. It hasn’t been well advertised and the survey isn’t available online; you have to print it from the town’s website and complete it by hand then take it to town hall (welcome to the last millennium!) I urge people who care about Renfrew to fill it in. We have already lost some beautiful buildings and need to act as a community to preserve what we have. We are on a

According to Jo-anne Caldwell, program detlepack@metroland.com veloper, Town of Renfrew Parks and Recreation There is a striking new art display at Renfrew Department, the Town of Renfrew has an art policy to display artwork from local artists in Town Hall. but jewelry, mosaic, photography and sculptures as well. She says the displays change on a quarterly basis. “We were looking for a new artist this season. I was familiar with Patrick’s work and contacted him to see if he would be interested in displaying his paintings,” said Caldwell. “Without hesitation, he agreed and it will be on display until early 2017.” Mills has 15 paintings on display. “It feels very welcoming to be asked,” said Mills. “It’s more than refreshing to show at town hall.” Caldwell thinks people need to see the work first hand. “Patrick’s work is best appreciated by seeing it in person,” said Caldwell. “The colours, shapes and textures are striking and the sheer
size of some of his works is quite impressive.” Mills says the work on display is very appropriate as it is a prelude for what people can expect to see at the Art Factory at 11 Bridge St. in Renfrew in what was for more than 100 years the H. Imbleau and Son Foundry, which he is currently renovating. He hopes to open a store/gallery there next year. Mills is working very hard on the building to bring it up to code. “Things are progressing very well,” said Mills. “It’s a lot of work but I am doing my absolute best to push it forward. I am looking forward to opening next year.” For more information on the Art Factory visit his Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ ArtFactoryRenfrew and for more on Mills visit his website: http://patrickjohnmills.com .

RVH CEO wins award for healthcare management excellence Randy Penney, president and CEO of Renfrew Victoria Hospital and St. Francis Memorial Hospital in Barry’s Bay, has won Canada’s 2016 Regent’s Award, which recognizes health care management excellence. The Canadian chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) will present the award to Penney at the Ontario Hospital Association’s Health Achieve 2016 Convention in Toronto on Nov. 8. The award honours ACHE members in health care leadership positions who are committed to excellence in their service to their health care organizations, community volunteer groups, and/or the Canadian Chapter of ACHE. of the Canadian chapter of ACHE, those who adhere to a standard of professionalism that serves as a model for others, and those who demonstrate creativity and initiative when improving procedures, practices and productivity, among other things. “It is a great honour to be chosen among my peers for this prestigious award,” Penney said after the award announcement. “But I must thank my colleagues in health care and in other organizations who have worked with me over the years to build innovative, cost-effective and sustainable partnerships that benefit all members of our community. These valuable and long-lasting collaborations are in themselves a great reward.” In a letter supporting Penney’s nomination, Dr. Jack
Kitts, president and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital, said: “I believe that Randy’s most important contribution relates to his ability to collaborate and form partnerships to enhance the health care services available in his communities such as dialysis, diagnostic imaging and cancer care. In addition,” Kitts added. “Randy’s commitment as a well respected surveyor with Accreditation Canada benefits greatly hospitals across the country and internationally.” Since becoming president and CEO in 1989, Penney has overseen major expansion and redevelopment at RVH. Capital projects have included the construction of a new regional nephrology centre and major redevelopment throughout RVH, as well as the ongoing construction of a new medical

“This year’s crop hasn’t been harvested yet but in 19 years, this local project has raised $131,374 which, when matched by the Canadian government, has grown to more than $500,000 sent to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank,” said a press release. “Local agribusinesses and individuals have donated generously of their time, equipment and finances to help make this happen.” In 30 years the Canadian Foodgrains Bank has offered $700 million of assistance to people in 78 countries, including 1.5 million tonnes of food and seeds. Long-time Greater Madawaska resident Jessie Stubinsky, left, joins Mayor Glenda McKay to hang the commemorative picture of Black Donald that Stubinsky donated to the township.
GM resident wants Black Donald to be remembered Jessie Stubinsky, 94, moved from Matawatchan to Black Donald in 1941. Stubinsky is a life-long resident of the township, and has many fond memories of Black Donald. She resided in the same house for 74 years and is now preparing to move to a senior’s residence. Upon preparing for her move, Stubinsky decided to donate a commemorative picture of Black Donald to the township that outlines historical information about the Black Donald mine and the surrounding community. At one time, Black Donald Mines (approximately 13 kilometres from Calabogie) prospered, producing graphite that aided in the efforts of World War I and World War II. Today
the area where the mine and community once thrived is under 80 feet of water and the name Black Donald is now used for a lake. The village and mine site were completely flooded with the creation of the hydro dam at Mountain Chutes in the mid-1960s. Greater Madawaska Mayor Glenda McKay was present for the hanging of the commemorative picture and to thank Stubinsky for her generous donation. Stubinsky said she wanted to donate the picture to be hung at the municipal office so that the public can be reminded of the Black Donald Mine and not forget about what an important part of our local history it has played.

Benefit dance for Merv Warren Nov. 26 at the Wing TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The community is rallying around one of its own after he suffered two major medical issues this year. A benefit dance will be held for Merv Warren on Nov. 26 at the RCAF
Wing in Renfrew. His sister, Laura Warren is helping to organize the event for Merv. Merv suffered a heart attack over the summer while working at Walmart and was also off due to eye surgery before that for a number of months. She says the 49 year
old has been working at Walmart for 31 years. “He had the heart attack on July 14 and is now back at work with very light duties,” said Laura. “He’s doing not bad, he gets tired fast but he is coming a long.” The dance is a chance for the family to let people
know how much they have appreciated all of the support. “So many people have been there for him,” said Laura. “It’s a chance to get everybody in one room to say thanks for their help.” The dance runs from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. and is only
$5 per ticket. The band Young Country will be performing. As well, Paul Manwell will be the DJ for the night. They will also be having a 50/50 draw and a raffle. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling Laura at 613-7173959.
Proponents are invited to submit appropriate documentation as outlined in the specification documents before 11:00 a.m. E.S.T., January 27, 2017. Lowest cost or any proposal not necessarily accepted. The County of Renfrew reserves the right to select any or no firms for interviews and appointments through this solicitation.

Do you crochet/weave? Would you like to try something different, and help others at the same time? We have a dedicated group of men and ladies coming each Wednesday to recycle milk bags into sleeping mats, which are distributed worldwide to needy countries (Peru, Haiti, Nicaragua). We would love to have additional hands to assist in this project. Come out and learn how to use milk bags to improve the lives of others, by crocheting or weaving. These mats are insect-resistant, disease-resistant, and last for years. The best part is that we are re-using these plastic bags into a functional purpose. Come for an hour or two, every week or once a month, all hands are welcome. We meet in Stewart Hall at TrinitySt. Andrew’s United Church every Wednesday afternoon, at 1 p.m., and the teakettle is always on at 3 p.m.! If you are curious about this project, please feel free to drop in for further information. There is always a demand for supplies, can you help us? We need clean and dry coloured milk bags. These should be laid flat and brought to Trinity-St.Andrew’s United Church at 291 Plaunt Street, using the Quarry Avenue entrance where there is a large plastic bin to put the bags into, or use the office door on Plaunt Street. It’s been a busy couple of weeks at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School (SJHS)! We finished off the month of October with a successful Halloween spirit day on Oct. 31. Students were treated to a fun-filled afternoon with games such as pumpkin carving, minute to win it games, and a spooky haunted house. The Grade 9 students then experienced take your kid to work day on Nov. 2, where they were treated to a day in the life of a family member or friend’s job. The Jag Hunt has begun, with students chasing each other frantically to try and pin them. We are enjoying the competition and the new friendships that have arisen within the past few weeks. We are very excited to see who will be crowned Jag hunt champion this year. The entire school gathered on Nov. 11 for a heartfelt and somber ceremony to remember those who have

Hunting safety tips from the Renfrew Fire Department The Fire Prevention Office from the Renfrew Fire Department would like to remind hunters that rural properties require the same fire-prevention measures as homes. With fall hunting season getting underway across Ontario, thousands of hunters are taking up temporary residence in their camps and cabins. SMOKE ALARMS
That is why the Renfrew Fire Department is stressing the importance of smoke alarms and carbonmonoxide detectors in all buildings where people will be sleeping. Trailers, campers, buses, RVs and mobile homes also require working smoke alarms and must have a carbon monoxide alarm as well. Often hunt camps/cabins are located on remote properties that can be challenging for fire departments to reach, so this often results
in slower response times and contributes to the spread of the fire as well. In the event of an actual fire, you may have only two to three minutes to escape. For this reason, always have two ways to escape in the event of an emergency. SAFETY TIPS
The following tips will help ensure a safe, enjoyable stay at the camp or cabin: • Ensure wood stoves and propane appliances are installed to code requirements. • Ensure propane appliances and portable heaters are approved for indoor use. • Keep combustibles well away from stoves and propane fired appliances. • If it is necessary to plug extension cords into appliances, ensure it is the proper gauge and can handle
the electrical load. • Ensure there are working smoke alarms on every level, ensure that you have a working carbon monoxide alarm and please change the batteries at least once a year. • Solve nuisance alarms by installing a smoke alarm with a hush button. • Install a carbon monoxide alarm. • Remember alcohol and cooking do not mix, unattended cooking is a leading cause of fires Campfires for recreational or cooking must be completely extinguished to prevent a forest fire. Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. Most hunters are extremely responsible when it comes to firearm safety, and we need to be just as diligent when it comes to protecting ourselves, and our loved ones from the tragedy of fire.

Lady luck is on the Jags’ side. The St. Joseph’s Catholic High School (SJHS) Jaguars senior girls basketball team will be competing at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA) ‘A’ championship, as the wild card, in their home gym. The team lost last week to Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI), who will also be playing in the tournament, on Nov. 17 and 18. Four teams applied for the wild card spot and on Friday it was announced the Jaguars earned the coveted sixth seed wild card position. “We were a little bit disappointed because the girls wanted to play in their home gym all year,” said Mike McMahon, head coach. “We got lucky a little bit.” The team found out late last week they would be playing in the tournament. “They were pretty excited when I called them on Friday night,” said McMahon. McMahon explained that four teams applied for the wild card and a committee looked at their record and schedule of competition to see who would be the last team in. “It’s a good thing we got the wild card,” said McMahon. “The committee thought we would be the best representative.” The Jags tip off at 1 p.m. against the St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School Falcons from Elgin, who are seeded third in the tournament. “It would be nice to have some fans in the stands and hopefully lead us to a victory,” said McMahon. The Jags’ second game of the day goes at 4 p.m. against the first-seed team, the Lady Lions from Rideau District High School from the Leeds Grenville area. RCI
After defeating the Jags last week in a close game, RCI advances to face Arnprior and District High School in Arnprior on Tuesday, Nov. 8 for the Upper Ottawa Valley High School Athletics championship. The Redmen, who are a ‘AA’ school, swept RCI 2-0 in their playoff series. In the final game the Arnprior girls won 65-32. Andrea Martin had 12 points for RCI and Courtney Roach added 11 points. ADHS has qualified for the ‘AA’-EOSSAA tournament in Brockville on Nov. 17 and 18. RCI has also qualified for the ‘A’-EOSSAA tournament at SJHS on Nov. 17 and 18. RCI is seeded in fourth place and their first game is on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. versus Carleton Place High School, which is ranked in fourth place. In the afternoon RCI plays Char-Lan District High School, who are the fifth seeds, at 2:30 p.m. For the full tournament schedule visit: https://eossaa2016sgbb.wordpress.com/ .

RBC donation helps disabled skiers hit the slopes at Calabogie Peaks RBC Dominion Securities has partnered with the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing’s Calabogie Adaptive Ski Program, providing a $4,000 donation to assist with the delivery of services during 2016-17. Entering its 13th season, the Calabogie Adaptive Ski Program (seven-week Sunday program) has grown from its initial base of eight skiers assisted by 12 volunteers to approximately 40 skiers assisted by 65 volunteers. Although the program is centered around skiing and snowboarding activities for children and adults, the goal is to build awareness and self-confidence in individuals who in a number of cases would be shut-ins during the winter months. Specific to this objective, the program is also entering its 12th season hosting a ski day for “Community Living” disabled adults from Renfrew and Arnprior. This season, 25 to 30 skiers are expected to be assisted by approximately 30 instructors and volunteers the last Monday in January. The program’s instructors and volunteers also assist Calabogie Peaks Snowschool providing instructional services and specialized ski equipment to disabled children allowing them to ski and snowboard with their classmates when they
visit the ski hill on weekday outings throughout the school year. The week-long Winter Sports Clinic for Injured Soldiers has been held for the past six years in Calabogie. The first Clinic in 2011 hosted six injured Canadian soldiers followed by 10 in 2012, seven in 2013 and 13 in 2014 and approximately 50 soldiers in the 2015/16 clinics. Two of the clinics saw the inclusion of seven injured American veterans. Learning to ski and snowboard, developing peer and mentor relationships, making new friends, thrills (and spills) is what can be expected at this year’s clinic scheduled to begin the first week in February. Training and providing Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing (CADS) instructor certification for instructors and volunteers continues to be a top priority to support all of our programs both at Calabogie and within CADS National Capital Division. This year, Calabogie will host the Eastern Canada Pre-course for CADS Course Conductors and Instructor Certification Examiners. Further information regarding the program’s participant and volunteer opportunities can be obtained on the website: http://www.cads-ncd.ca

This is that special weekend when hunters empty their wallets so that their lovely ladies can make merry and shop for some unique and beautiful gifts and decorations. It seems to work well as both parties are happy with their resulting circumstances. Some of the men also showed up but quickly realized it was much less pain-
ful to just turn over their money, leaving just enough to buy some solace as they commiserated together on their misfortune of missing a great chance to golf. Some of the leagues are now finishing their first draws and results are starting to trickle in. The first to report is the Wednesday night Skins and
taking the glory were Rob Warren, Steve Hibbons and Larry Visneskie with a host of spares filling the third position. Close behind were the Cliff Valleau team with Brian Thiessen and Karl and Theresa Mann. Unfortunately the Lee Sharpe Sunshine Coach Spiel had to be postponed until next year as time and

and Provincial Knowledge Exchange (PKE) projects were the center of the research impact study. Both projects have played a major role in helping the board meet its strategic goals for the effective integration of technology into both teaching and learning. “We’re now into our fourth year and have made some major gains in getting technology into the classrooms across our district,” said Julia Graydon, RCCDSB Learning and Technology. “Now, we’re getting an outside critique of what we’re doing, what is working, and what we can improve on in implementation and measurement.” Graydon had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Brown when he was in Toronto to give the keynote address at the 2016 Ontario Education Research Symposium. He surmised that the Ministry of Education would be keen to know if its investment was making a difference. “When you are rolling out new programs, it is important to know what is effective and what isn’t and where improvements can be made.” So, he came to Renfrew County to talk to teachers, principals and the superintendents overseeing the projects to start developing an impact measurement approach. “It’s important to develop a framework to measure what you have done,” said Dr. Brown. “We’re doing something no one else is doing in Ontario,” he added. He credits the pioneering vision of
Graydon, along with Mark Searson and Jaimie Perry, RCCDSB superintendents of educational services, in getting behind this initiative. His visit will culminate in a report measuring the initial impact of the RCCDSB’s 21st Century Teaching and Learning and Provincial Knowledge Exchange programs. It will highlight and provide the board with feedback on how to enhance their capacity-building efforts in relation to effectively integrating technology into both teaching and learning. Dr. Brown has a longstanding interest in how evidence can aid education policy and practice. He has written four books and several papers and has presented in both Europe and North America. In 2015 he was awarded the American Educational Research Association ‘Emerging Scholar’ award (Education Change SIG). The award is given to someone who had demonstrated a strong record of original and significant scholarship related to educational change. Dr. Brown was also awarded the 2016 AERA Excellence in Research to Practice award and the UCEA Jeffrey V. Bennett Outstanding International Research award. “It’s amazing to have Chris here as he is a renowned expert in the area of evidence informed practice,” said Graydon. Dr. Brown hopes return to Renfrew County early in the new year to present his report to the RCCDSB.

Mary feels blessed for magic and miracles of Depression years MARY COOK Memories
It was hard for me to figure out the difference between magic and a miracle. My sister Audrey said they were just about the same thing. And yet I knew in my heart, that a miracle was an act of God. Hadn’t our Lutheran minister said so? But both miracles and magic were all around me on our farm in Northcote, and I was hard pressed to tell the difference. It gave me plenty to think about. It was surely magic how Myrtle the telephone operator knew exactly where everyone was at any given time in Northcote. Many was the time our phone would ring and it would be Myrtle to say someone’s barn was on fire, and the whole community would be in a turmoil. Or she would announce that the Saturday night house party was at the Thom’s. Now, how she would know all this to me was pure magic. And a miracle happened, or maybe it was magic, every single night right in our summer kitchen. The fresh milk was brought in in milk cans, I thought bluish in colour, and some miracle happened during the night. By morning, when I was sent out with the strainer and the big brown bowl, the entire tops of the cans would be yel-

low with cream! Now how the cream came to the top, without the help of anyone’s hand, to me, was pure magic. And how, if I fell asleep on top of someone’s bed while visiting at a Saturday night house party, without my even being aware of it, I would be moved, and I would waken in my own bed in the morning! Now, how could that be? Magic? I thought so. More often than by sheer chance, my Uncle Lou always seemed to appear when we needed him most. Mother would be lonely, missing all that she had left behind in her beloved New York, and there would be Uncle Lou’s big black Buick with the gold eagle on the hood coming in our long lane. I called our Uncle Lou our miracle. Or when Mother’s egg money failed to meet our everyday needs, and there wasn’t enough money to even buy coal oil for the lamps, a letter would arrive from Uncle Lou, and tucked inside would be an American $20 bill. I knew that was a miracle, and not magic. And of course, the fact that both Mother and Miss Crosby knew what was going on around them without as much as raising their eyes from whatever they were busy at, to me was magic. I often closed my eyes and tried to figure out what was happening a few feet away, and could see absolutely nothing! No, with Mother and Miss
Crosby, that had to be magic. And one of the biggest miracles of all to me, was when winter had settled in, and even with the snow banked against the outside walls of our house, stockings crammed into the frames of the windows, the old log house was still drafty and cold. Even the Findlay Oval was no match for the cold of the winter’s blasts. And yet, when I would go to the stable with Father at night, as I often did, the barns would be as warm as toast. There was no stove, no stove
LEWIS MACDONALD Renfrew Duplicate Bridge Club
In the Chalk Talk preceding regular play at duplicate November 8, Wayne Daze continued his series of workshops on How to Play the Hand. He emphasized some principles to observe in no trump contracts. First of all, he pointed out, you have to listen to the opposition’s bidding for clues where the missing key cards lie. Then you need to determine how many tricks are surefire and the number you are short. Wayne illustrated too how employing the Rule of Seven can stave off disaster in a no trump contract.

The Rule of Seven assumes a 3NT contract. It is employed this way: subtract from seven the total number of cards that declarer and dummy hold in the defenders’ suit and duck their lead of the suit that many times. The afternoon at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre saw three successful small slams. On Board 17, Steve Gray and Tom Sutter made a lone six hearts contract. On Board 27, two teams brought home contracts of 6NT, scoring all 13 tricks. Kudos to Gillian and Mack Wilson and to Steve Gray and Tom Sewter again. Trinity-St. Andrew’s (TSA) Thrift Shop recently presented $710 to Renfrew and District Food Bank president Doug Brookes. The food bank, located in the Armouries at 115 Veterans Memorial Dr. Renfrew, has provided food to an average of 120 men, 108 women and 94 children each month in 2016. In 2016 alone, 50 new families have required the services of the food bank. Donations of food may be made at any time at the Renfrew Fire Hall. Highest volume products are juice, peanut butter, cereal and canned
fruit. Linda Boldt who made the presentation on behalf of the thrift shop said: “We are pleased to be able to support the food bank as they head into their most demanding time of year.” The TSA Thrift Shop (located in the basement of the United Church at 291 Plaunt St. South- at the corner of Quarry Ave.) sells clothing, books and small household goods at affordable prices. A portion of net sales is given back to the community each quarter. TSA Thrift Shop hours are Mondays from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursdays 3 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (except holiday weekends). Donations of goods may be made when the shop is open. Enter through the Quarry Ave. entrance. Construction on Plaunt Street is now complete and access to the shop much improved. Keep up with sales and events and promotions through: Facebook: TSA Thriftshop Twitter: @TSA_thrift Instagram: @tsathrift #TSAThrift*.

CARD OF THANKS
THANK YOU Jack and I want to thank Tracy, Lisa and their families for the beautiful 50th Anniversary celebration they honoured us with on October 29, 2016. Much hard work and organization went into making this wonderful event occur and we both appreciate everyone who assisted. Thank you to the Renfrew Legion for their hospitality, the Lady’s Auxiliary and Bartenders for serving the food and drinks and D.J. Grant Gauthier for the wonderful entertainment. We were thrilled that so many people could make it and had a magical evening catching up with all of our guests. Thank you to everyone who gave us kind regards, beautiful cards and generous gifts. Fifty years of marriage is certainly a reason to celebrate and we are truly grateful to have been able to celebrate it with our family and friends. Thank you, Jack and Marlyn Pinkham

November 19, 2014 The moment that you died, My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you, I often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon my cheeks. Remembering you is easy, I do it every day, But missing you is heartache, That never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart, And there you will remain, Death leaves a heartache, No one can heal, Love leaves a memory, No one can steal. Lovingly remembered Your Wife Bonnie

Let there be no grief or sorrow Or wondering where I may be I am happy with the lord He is looking after me The church bells are ringing And my loved ones will pray But be happy for me On this, my graduation day My trials on earth are over All my sorrow is gone away I made of it, what I could While He allowed me to stay I wasted not a moment And learned so much along the way And at the end of my lessons Is my graduation day I understand your grief and sorrow To you, I passed away There’ll be a hole in your heart Until He lifts the veil away But look closer, deep within you Because within you I will stay Until I’m called to bring you home On your graduation day We will hear the choir singing And the piper start to play And we will all welcome you On your graduation day All your deeds will be considered And your sins all thrown away And we will celebrate together On your graduation day By: Janie Elliott
