Christmas activities just around the corner in downtown Renfrew TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Shopping, lights, Santa, a nativity scene and more. Renfrew, it’s time to shop local and support the downtown community. And there is plenty to do in Renfrew from Thursday, Nov. 30 to Sunday, Dec. 3. To start things off the Renfrew Business Improvement Area/Downtown Renfrew (BIA) is hosting its an-

nual Holiday Shop Hop on Nov. 30 from 5 to 9 p.m. It’s a chance to not only shop but support a good cause as well. A $5 passport is required by shoppers to join in the fun, which can be purchased at one of the numerous participating local businesses, that $5 goes directly to Hospice Renfrew. Once you collect five stamps, enter the passport with your contact information and you are eligible to win $500 worth of downtown merchant

gift certificates. “Traditionally, it’s an evening out for the girls and some of them bring their husbands along and he gets some Christmas ideas too,” said BIA manager Tammy Logan. “It’s a fun way to support the Hospice and Downtown Renfrew at the same time.” On Friday, Dec. 1 is the annual tree lighting in Low Square in support of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation at 6 p.m. After the tree is lit the Renfrew

Public Library, across the street at 13 Railway Ave. is hosting a Traditional Holiday Evening, which will include songs, warm drinks, Christmas stories and good cheer. For the first time ever Renfrew will welcome an evening parade on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. “It’s new, exciting and it’s going to be bright with lot’s of floats,” said Logan. The theme is 150 Wishes, to tie it in with Canada’s 150 birthday.

This is the first year the BIA has hosted the parade as the Lion’s Club had hosted it for a number of years. “The Lion’s Club have definitely been a big help. We have learned a lot and they have donated resources and have given us a lot of guidance,” said Logan. “The community at large have been asking for an evening parade for the last few years and the Lion’s Club was unable to do it with their decreasing volunteer base.” See NEW, page 9

The journey to recovery still stretches before him, but Renfrew Coun. Tom Sidney jumped a major hurdle last week with his return to the council table. The Renfrew councillor received treatment with the rehabilitation team at the Ottawa General Hospital after an accident on Sept. 1 that left him with little to no movement in his arms and his legs. Sidney was diagnosed with spinal stenosis — a hereditary spine deformity that was causing sudden weakness and falls. His fellow council members welcomed him back with a round of applause. “It’s great to have you back,” said Renfrew Mayor Don Eady. It felt good to be back, said Sidney. “There’s lots to get caught up on,” he said, noting his health is progressing, but there’s still a long road ahead. “I can’t drive until spring. There’s still a lot of numbness and tingling in 65 per cent of my body. My strength is very weak,” he said. Lake Clear anglers fined $1,380 Horton restructures: declares rec Three men from Eganville have been fined $1,380 for fishing offences Keenan Zohr, Mark Florent and Colton Florent pleaded guilty and were each fined $460 for possessing fish of a prohibited size. Court heard that on Sept. 22 the men were contacted by a conservation officer as they came off Lake Clear, County of Renfrew. During the inspection, the officer determined that the men had caught and retained seven walleye that were smaller than the allowed size limit of 50 centimetres. Justice of the Peace Clayton McKechnie heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice,

Pembroke, on Oct. 23. The ministry reminds anglers that only walleye greater than 50 centimetres may be kept when fishing on Lake Clear in Renfrew County. Home damaged in break-in

A home on Juniper Road in the Township of Greater Madawaska was broken into sometime between Nov. 1-15. The owner discovered the break-in, which resulted in extensive damage inside including paint cans opened and sprayed around the inside of the home. Nothing appears to have been stolen. Provincial Const. Sarah Darraugh is investigating. On Nov. 19 a small fire was reported inside

an abandoned building on Magnesium Road. The Whitewater Region Fire Department attended and extinguished the blaze, which caused minor damage. The fire appears to have been willfully set. Evidence at the scene was preserved and collected. Const. Kyle Mask is leading the investigation.

manager position redundant TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

In an effort to find cost savings and efficiencies the Township of Horton council has decided to restructure the recreation department. In a committee report dated Nov. 17 it states that as of Jan. 1, 2018 the recreation program manager position at Horton Township will be redundant. Effective Nov. 13, Kathleen Rogers, the now former recreation manager will be taking her banked time and holidays. “Restructuring is never an easy decision especially when it impacts personnel,” stated the report authored by Sue Klatt, Horton chief administrative officer/clerk. “This decision was not an easy one to make on a personal side for council members and myself as chief administrative officer/clerk but one seen as necessary to meet the needs of the municipality and prioritize the

development of a recreation master plan.” She stresses in the report it had nothing to do with Rogers work ethic. “It should be emphasized council and I were unanimous in our statement when we say that in no way was there ever a doubt that the recreation program manager performed her role with passion, dedication, and commitment to the Township of Horton; this was never in question.” Effective immediately all recreation administration duties will be redistributed on an interim basis. The committee report is set to go in front of council on Nov. 21, it is recommending that council directs Klatt to proceed with an application to the Rural Economic Development Fund for a Community Liaison Contract position, to develop the recreation master plan, review the needs of the municipality and reflect the new strategic goals.

GRAND ROUNDS

Annual Tree of Lights December 1 at 6 p.m. in Low Square, Renfrew

Everyone is invited to gather and celebrate the official arrival of the holiday season in downtown Renfrew with RVH “The TOL event has become a very strong tradition in our community and we are looking forward to another evening of great guests and beautiful music,” says Barb Desilets, RVH Foundation Executive Director. “And we can’t forget about the big event — lighting up the huge tree to glow in the heart of downtown.” Christmas in the Valley will be a featured musical piece, and since Santa will be busy with the Renfrew Parade on the following day, he’s sending a good pal in his place. A lumberjack from the early valley days, Big Joe from the Ottawa REDBLACKS, will greet all of the children and help with lighting the tree—a fitting guest as we celebrate 120 years of the hospital’s commitment, striving to provide excellent care for the people of our community. The Foundation hosts the event every year to mark its annual appeal to the public for gifts to support local health care services. Each light on the tree represents a donation in memory or in honour of a special person. “In the spirit of the season, this is our opportunity to publicly say ‘thank you’ to every one of our donors and inspire others to do the same,” notes Desilets. The fun begins at 6 p.m. with free hot chocolate (courtesy of Renfrew Tim Hortons) and treats available to everyone on the “Nice List”!

Highway 17 motorist faces impaired driving, drug charges Two drivers are facing criminal charges after choosing to operate a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol to an extent that impaired their ability to drive. On Saturday, Nov. 11 at approximately 1 a.m. Provincial Const. Jason Golds stopped to assist a motorist on the side of Highway 17 near Kohlsmith Road with the vehicle’s four-way flashers on. The motorist advised he had run out of gas. Further investigation revealed the male driver had been drinking and was arrested for impaired driving. A search of the vehicle revealed a white substance believed to be cocaine, drug trafficking paraphernalia, and ammunition. The male is currently on a 10-year court order prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. Following breath tests at the detachment a 27-year-old Ottawa man was held for a bail hearing charged with impaired driving, driving over 80mgs, possession of ammunition while prohibited, possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, driving while under suspension and driving without a currently validated permit. On Saturday, Nov. 11 at approximately 4:30 p.m. Const. Julie McPeak stopped a vehicle on Highway 17 near Bruce Street after receiving information that the driver may have been impaired. The male driver had been drinking and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. Following further breath tests at the detachment a 53-year-old Horton Township man was charged with driving over 80mgs. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on Dec. 6. The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 266 calls for service during the past week. Domestic violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated

six domestic disputes during the past week. Liquor licence act charge and warning On Sunday, Nov. 12 shortly before 10 p.m. Const. Kevin Rebertz was patrolling the parking lots at Ma-Te-Way Park in Renfrew when he stopped to speak to the four occupants of two vehicles parked in a secluded corner. The officer found open liquor, empty beer cans, full beer cans and drug paraphernalia. One 17-year-old youth claimed ownership of all items. He was charged under the LLA with being under 19 and having alcohol. The parents of all 4 youths were contacted and attended the scene to pick up their children. The other three youths were issued warnings. Thefts Thefts from vehicles parked at boat launches are continuing. One victim reported the tonneau cover ruined and the thief stole numerous articles including musky lure/buck tail making materials, fishing supplies, camping supplies and hand tools from the truck bed. This incident occurred on Oct. 9 but was reported to the OPP online on Nov. 8. A second victim reported their vehicle damaged and entered on Wednesday, Nov. 8 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Stolen property included two Transom supports, fishing net, K-bar knife, two electric knives, flash light, Eliminator battery booster, survival suit, axe, winter jacket, Rocky hunting boots, drift socks (sea anchors). The Clay Bank boat launch and the White Lake boat launch were the locations in the above thefts. A GPS and diagnostic reader were stolen from an unlocked vehicle on Prince Avenue in Renfrew. The theft happened overnight Nov. 12. Weapons prohibition breach Charge On Friday, Nov. 10, OPP officers executed a search of a residence with a search warrant. A recent “news” story shared countless times on social media indicated exactly that – and it was 100 per cent false. A website called Wky12News posted the story and a quick click on the site name and readers could see this disclaimer: “Wky12.com is a satirical website. Most articles on this website are works of fantasy or satire and are not true. “This website is meant for entertainment purposes only.” This and many other sites are fake, part of a chain of websites that appear to bank on readers clicking on particular versions of the post to generate advertising revenue. The Renfrew Public Library recently hosted ‘The Truth Lies Hidden,’ a panel discussion about finding the facts. Lawyer/mediator/arbitrator Andrew Tremayne, assistant professor/reporter/ author Brett Popplewell, and librarian/ researcher Christopher Stephenson spoke to the public about discerning the hidden truth in today’s society. The ferocity with which the Adam Sandler link was shared underscored the need to educate social media users about fake news. Critical thinking is a key skill in media and information literacy and we must

remain vigilant when it comes to what comes across our screens. So what exactly can you do to spot fake news? The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users, has some useful tips. Firstly, consider the source. Click away from the story to investigate the site, its mission and contact information. Read beyond. Headlines can be outrageous in an effort to get clicks. What’s the whole story. Check the author. Do a quick search on the author, says the IFLA. Are they credible, are they real? Check the date. Reposting old news stories doesn’t mean they’re relevant to current events. Supporting sources? Click on those links. Determine if the information given actually supports the story. Is it a joke? If it is too outlandish, it might be satire. Research the site and author to be sure. Check your biases. Consider if your own beliefs could affect your judgement. Ask the experts. Ask a librarian or consult a fact-checking site. Real news has value. Watering it down with fake news and alternate facts is simply wrong.

Lack of respect on Remembrance Day and beyond To the editor:

My husband Wayne and I reside in the Griffith area and have done so for the past 10 years. We live amongst the wildlife and all its beauty and will hopefully continue to do so for several more years. Yesterday, Remembrance Day was to be a quiet reflective day of thought, memories and respect for those who have served past present and future. Our little cabin by the water is a prime location for such reflec-

tions and at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of November, our neighbours began firing their high powered rifles non stop during what should have been a moment of silence. These people continuously demonstrate a complete lack of respect for a day to remember and to honour those we have lost. These individuals will further disrespect their fellow hunters by firing hundreds of rounds of ammunition for days at a time during the recent opening of

the hunting season, which will inevitably scare off potential game and disallow for a successful hunt and harvest. Food on the table becomes a very difficult task when faced with such disrespect for those in dire need of providing for their families. Giving thanks for our many blessings during Thanksgiving weekend is also met with disrespect when again for days at a time these individuals will fire hundreds of rounds of ammunition with a drink at hand no

less...and after dark. They have anger when they should have laughter. They hate when they should have love. And they disrespect when they should have courtesy and compassion. Despite our best efforts to contact the authorities and try to resolve the various issues, we have been met with a stone wall. Unable to pass through a mind filled with cement or rubble, the authorities do not seem to care or be bothered with this

disrespect. Perhaps the authorities are not willing to disrupt the flow of continuity. Whatever the case, it is important to inform the readers of such disrespect and I am certain that the scales would be tipped in our favor by an overwhelming percentage... thank God. With our most sincere gratitude. Without prejudice. Suzanne and Wayne Martel Griffith

Ontario government passes back-to-work legislation, ends college faculty strike CHRISTOPHER WHAN cwhan@metroland.com

Algonquin students, along with several hundred thousand other college students in Ontario will be back in class Nov. 21 after the Ontario government passed back-toschool legislation on Nov. 19 The five-week strike saw little movement between the two sides and after college faculty members of OPSEU voted overwhelmingly against an offer from the college employer council in a forced vote, Premier Kathleen Wynne said she and her government were looking into any avenue available to get students back in class. The college employer council called for a vote from OPSEU members earlier this month. The forced vote was a one-time option given to the employer council under the Colleges Collective Bargaining Act. Back to work legislation was introduced on Nov. 17 and was passed 39-18. The Ontario government said in a statement released Sunday that all outstanding issues are to be negotiated in binding mediation-arbitration. “The College Employer Council and OPSEU have five days to agree on a mediator-arbitrator, or one will be appointed by the Minister of Labour,” the statement reads. OPSEU is unhappy with the outcome. OPSEU president Warren Thomas said the delay in intervention serves

to benefit the council as opposed to the workers. “The Liberals let the strike drag on until they could justify their legislation in the court of public opinion,” he said. “In doing so, they played right into the hand of the College Employer Council, which had been aiming for legislation, not negotiation, all along.” The government is adamant that this was the best solution to get students back to class. “Students were in the middle of the strike for too long,” said Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development Deb Matthews. “We needed to put students first, and get them back to their studies. This legislation ensures students can get back to the classroom and refocus on their education.” This was the longest strike in faculty history at 32 days and will most-likely see the winter break altered and, according to the colleges, a potential extra two weeks added to the end of the year. The Ontario government has promised that full-time domestic and international students will be eligible to receive up to $500 for unexpected costs caused by the strike. This support will not count against a student’s OSAP assessment. After two weeks, if the returning students are unsatisfied with the condensed schedule, students who wish to withdraw from college because of the strike are eligible for a full tuition refund. This also applies to apprentice students.

New route for Renfrew Santa parade Dec. 2 From front page

Also new this year is the parade route, focusing on the downtown core: from Bonnechere Street South (starting at Renfrew Collegiate Institute) turn left onto Renfrew Avenue West, then right on Lochiel Street South, to Opeongo Road, then left onto Raglan Street South until Monroe Avenue East where the parade will turn left and proceed back to the school. “We are hoping with a smaller route more people will want to attend,” said Logan. After the parade Santa Claus will be in the front foyer of the town hall to meet and greet young and old. There will also be burn barrels set up to roast marshmallows. The BIA has also introduced Shoppy the Elf and his friends, who have been visiting local stores; there will be a scavenger hunt at noon to find the elves and Christmas wish sayings, pick up the full list at Scotia Bank. Where to go for addiction treatment in the County of Renfrew years and over who have a substance use problem and need residential support. Residents can expect to stay for about three months while they receive individual and group counselling and have a safe place to learn to maintain their sobriety. MacKay Manor also sponsors both the Addiction Supportive Housing Program, which helps those with substance use issues who are in recovery find adequate housing, and the Community Withdrawal Management Service, which is an outreach program that supports individuals who need community support in getting and staying alcohol- and drug-free.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

However, it should be noted that at A.T.S., they offer specialized services for youth 12 to 15 years of age or services for those struggling with a gambling issue. On the other hand, if you are a pregnant and/or parenting woman, Pathways has a specialized program called MotherSafe, whereby the worker can actually visit with clients in their homes or another place of their choosing to assist them with their substance use. Finally, there is much in the news recently about the opioid crisis happening across not only the province but the country. Renfrew County is

certainly not immune to this crisis. For those seeking help with opioid use, there are two programs currently available to help residents of Renfrew County under the RCATS umbrella: MotherSafe Opioid Case Management for pregnant and/or parenting women located at Pathways, and Opioid Case Management for men and women who are not pregnant and do not have children at Addictions Treatment Service. Both of these programs also deliver services to family members of those with opioid issues. Please visit www.renfrewcountyaddictiontreatment for contact information.

The Renfrew County Addiction Treatment System (RCATS) consists of three agencies that have been in operation for many years. However, residents of Renfrew County are not always aware of these services, nor do they know who to call when they need help. Hopefully, a breakdown of agencies and their respective services will be of assistance in determining who to call if help is required. Out of the three Champlain Local Health Integration Network-funded services, MacKay Manor has been around for the longest. MacKay Manor provides supportive services to men aged 18

Paws 4 Stories comes to the Renfrew Public Library A dog’s presence is powerful. Therapy dogs have been reducing stress levels and blood pressure, calming the distressed, comforting the despondent and distracting the pain-ridden for decades. Now, canine companions are helping children learn to read. Beginning on Thursday, Nov. 23, St. John Ambulance Child Therapy Dogs Rory and Axel will be available for the Paws 4 Stories program at the Renfrew Public Library children’s department. Paws 4 Stories is a St. John Ambulance therapy dog community service that was introduced to assist in improving the reading skills of children by having a child read to a therapy dog. St. John Ambulance dogs are registered, insured therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handler as a team in schools and libraries across the country as reading companions for children. While dogs may not be able to read, they make great listeners. Their relaxed, non-judgmental presence creates an inviting and motivating

environment that is comfortable, safe, empowering and fun! The concept is simple, but the results are compelling. Children who participate in the Paws 4 Stories program make enormous strides in reading and communication skills while building self-esteem, confidence and social skills along the way. Emergent readers are invited to come share stories and cuddles with Rory, a two-and-a-half-year-old golden retriever or Axel, a five-yearold Bernese mountain dog. Children arrive with their own books, or select one from library shelves and then snuggle in for their 15 minutes of oneon-one reading aloud time with the dog and their human companion. No parents are allowed inside the room so as to avoid any distractions. Rory and Axel visit the children’s department on Thursdays from 3:45 — 4:45 p.m. If you’re interested in booking a time slot for your child, Annie Gervais/Submitted register by calling 613-432-8151 ext. 5 or dropping into the library and hav- Liam Seaman shares a story with St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Rory in the Renfrew Public Library children’s department. ing your name put on the list.

The SA is also gearing up for its annual Christmas dinner at the Renfrew Legion on Wednesday, Dec. 13 with one sitting at noon, the cost is $10 per person and tickets are available at the SA Thrift Store, the church office or Scott & Sons Hardware at 150 Raglan St. S. For more information or to sign up contact Forrest: 613-433-9785.

Hundreds of local children toured the Renfrew Fire Department for Fire Prevention Week, which ran from Oct. 8 to 14. Make this the year to budget for charitable giving Budgets are an important component of personal financing. Without a thorough understanding of the rate of money going in and out of their bank accounts, people cannot accurately assess their potential for spending and saving. Budgets are also handy for paying off debt and planning for the future. Those who budget may find they have more money to devote to leisure or other worthwhile endeavors, such as donating to charity. Establishing a charity budget makes it possible for people to focus on doing good and helping others. Charitable giving also comes with the beneficial side effect of establishing extra tax deductions for some individuals. Many people only think of charitable giving at the end of the year, when the holiday season tends to inspire philanthropy. However, many people’s end-ofyear finances are already stretched thin thanks to holiday shopping and entertaining. As a result, men and women who wait until the end of the year to donate may not be able to be as charitable as they would like. That’s why focusing on charity as part of a yearly budget can stretch dollars even further.

By examining their finances, people can get a better picture of how much money they have for discretionary spending, including charitable giving. However, income alone may not dictate just how charitable a person can be. To make a charitable giving budget work, consider these tips. • Make a list of charities that have meaning to you. If you do not have specific choices, select categories, such as politics, education and com-

munity, and then go from there. • Assess your giving ability in dollar value. Be sure charitable giving does not come at the expense of necessary daily living. • Divide the available funds against the charities selected. • Set aside specific times of year that you will make the donations so as not to feel burdened at any one time of year. • Leave an emergency fund for do-

nations that cannot be planned, such as disaster relief or to help someone with medical bills. • Sign up for recurring payments for yearly giving to take the work out of remembering to give. Other organizations can distribute donations to the kinds of charities you prefer, making giving even more automatic. Budgeting for charitable giving enables greater year-round control of funds for beneficial purposes.

What is Giving Tuesday?

Designed to serve as the unofficial kickoff to the holiday charitable giving season, Giving Tuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the United States. This year, the date is Nov. 28. While events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become incredibly popular among holiday shoppers looking for great deals on gifts for their loved ones, Giving Tuesday aims to capitalize on the holiday spirit of giving by celebrating philanthropy and promoting charitable giving. Giving Tuesday began in 2012 and was the brainchild of the team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at New York City’s 92nd Street Y, which has brought people together around the values of service and giving since 1874. Nonprofits, civic organizations, for-profit businesses and corporations, individuals, and families have participated in Giving Tuesday since its inception. In 2015, with the cooperation of donors, volunteers and organizations in 71 countries (including Canada), the Giving Tuesday movement raised nearly $117 million. More information about Giving Tuesday is available at www.GivingTuesday.org.

Patsy was a long-time resident of the Whitewater Region. She worked for the township for 25 years, and was a well known and loved volunteer. The wonderful staff and volunteers at Hospice Renfrew were able to provide the care and support that Patsy needed during her last seven weeks. She was able to live comfortably, surrounded by her friends and family. The Pullin’ for Patsy committee was able to raise $2,000 from the golf tournament. During her Celebration of Life, the committee also collect $400 which was donated at that time. The committee will be purchasing a leaf in honour of Patsy which will be displayed in the main hallway on the Rural Reflections Donor Wall. The committee would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who donated to help make this event a success. Making the donation from left to right are: Jamie Caswell, Janet Burns, Lisa Kenopic, Hospice Renfrew volunteer, Caryn Wattie, Billie Jo martin (in front), Bill Misener, Sharon Arbic, Hospice Renfrew RN and Hugh Martin.

Giving Tuesday is the unofficial kickoff to the holiday charitable giving season. Giving Tuesday aims to capitalize on the holiday spirit of giving.

CCHL2 Wolves beat Kings TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

The newest rivalry in the Central Canada Hockey Tier 2 (CCHL2) League was tested on Friday, Nov. 17 as the Renfrew Timberwolves defeated the Whitewater Kings at the MaTe-Way Activity Centre 4-3. The Kings are new to the league and are sitting in sixth place of the Richardson Division with an 11-11

record and the Wolves are currently in seventh place at 8-12. It was a battle from the start as it was tied 1-1 after the first with Jared Weber scoring for the Kings and Curtis Foster answering for the Wolves. Early in the second period the Kings went ahead with a power-play goal by Hunter Halliday. The Wolves fought back with goals by Luka Marinic and Braden Zvonarich just two minutes apart. Then at 9:54 of the third period Quinn Van-

hoof scored for the Kings but Zach Moran sealed the victory for the Wolves on the power play at 17:49. Both local CCHL2 teams hit the ice on Nov. 14, a rare Tuesday tilt and both fell to the home team. The Ottawa Canadians defeated the Renfrew Timberwolves 5-3, with a huge third period. The game started out close with no scoring in the first period and the Wolves were up 2-1 after the second with goals by Marinic and Connor Fulton. However the Canadians exploded out of the gate for the final frame with four unanswered goals. Marinic added the only goal of the third period for

Renfrew. The Whitewater Kings didn’t do too much better in Carleton Place losing 5-2 to the Carleton Place Jr. Canadians. The Kings had the early advantage with the lone goal in the first by Danny Griffith but the Canadians scored three goals in the second with Weber managing the only goal for Cobden. In the third the Canadians and the Kings (Gage Tremblay) each added one more. The Whitewater Kings postponed its game on Nov. 18 against the Richmond Royals due to the weather conditions. And on Sunday, Nov. 19 the Timberwolves couldn’t defeat the strug-

gling Perth Blue Wings, as the Blue Wings won 4-3 in Perth. Getting on the score sheet for Renfrew were: Zvonarich, Foster and Chad Moore. On Nov. 23 the Timberwolves travel to play the Athens Aeros at 7:30 p.m. and on Friday, Nov. 24 the Wolves host the Char-Lan Rebels at the MaTe-Way Activity Centre at 8 p.m. The Whitewater Kings are on the road on Friday, Nov. 24 as they head to Westport at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 25 the Kings welcome the Arnprior Packers to Cobden at 7 p.m. and on Sunday the Kings travel to Athens for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.

UOV U14A earns silver medal in Oshawa Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) U14A ringette team earned a hard-fought silver medal in Oshawa. The girls were undefeated in the roundrobin with a 4-0 record. They met Elora Fergus in the semi-final and came out on top winning 12-6. In the final, they faced Richmond Hill. The girls gave a tremendous effort, but lost 4-3 in overtime. The U14A coach Shane Lambert pointed out that “because of our balanced attack, teams could not focus on any given player. It shows

well that we had four of the top 10 scorers in the tournament.” At this level of play, points for wins and ties (in roundrobin play) in tournaments determine a team’s provincial ranking. Lambert explained: “Going 4-0 in the roundrobin helps out our rankings for the provincial tournament in March. We had the perfect start to the year earning the maximum number of points (eight) to go towards our provincial ranking!” The next tournament for the UOV 14A team is Dec. 1-4 in Arnprior.

As a side benefit, money is raised, sometimes for the club, but often for a worthy cause in the area. And so it was ton Nov. 3 and 4 Renfrew Victoria Hospital Young Professionals held their annual bonspiel. Dr. Lauren Scott, the chief organizer hosted 22 teams and their numerous fans and friends for the 3rd annual bonspiel. Team Wagner was the winning team with 36 points featuring Tim, Justin and Andrew Wagner and Jacob Cover. The most honest team with seven points was team Senack (Sandra Senack, Sherry McLeod, Lisa Delarge and Janet Brisco). A big thank you to the RVH Young Professionals committee for organizing the event and to Ben and Lindsey Oakes for the delicious meal. It is with great sadness that the family of Gerald Morrow announces his passing after a lengthy illness, on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at the age of 78 years. Gerry was a quiet man who loved his family and always ensured everyone was well taken care of. He leaves behind his one true love of almost 61 years, Faye. Gerry was an amazing father to Marie, Michael and Doryann and predeceased by his parents, two infant children, as well as his granddaughters Amanda and Patricia, who were waiting for him at the gates of Heaven. A husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle and friend, Gerald was loved by many. Gerald was an amazing Grampa to 11 grandchildren and great Grampa to 16. Gerry was always whistling. Anyone can attest to this fact. You could always hear him coming, or know where he was just by that distinctive whistling. His favourite of course, was Oh Danny Boy. Gerry was a man of many trades, whether it be fixing cars, house renovations, or jimmy rigging something around the house so that it would work. He was kind, hard working and loving. He will be missed by so many. As per Gerald’s wishes, there will be no wake or funeral. Thanks goes out to the staff and nurses at Arnprior District Memorial Hospital. Your kindness and compassion during Gerry’s last few days got our family through. Special thanks to Lucy, Our family cannot thank you enough for your compassion, kindness and love towards Gerry and our family. You were there for us in ways we can’t explain, and for that, we are so thankful for you. In Lieu of donations, please feel free to make a donation in Gerald’s memory to a cause that is near and dear to your heart. “Your life was a blessing, Your memory a treasure, You are loved beyond words, and missed beyond measure”

In Loving Memory of Gordon “Boots” Amos November 22, 2016 God Saw You Getting Tired God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be So he put his arms around you And whispered, Come to Me. With tearful eyes we watched you And saw you pass away And although we loved you dearly We could not make you stay.

Dianne Alice (Price) Groce We cannot forget you, my loved one so dear, Your memory grows sweeter year after year; You cannot return, so my tears are in vain, But in heaven I am hoping to meet you again.

PRAYERS PRAYER TO the Blessed Virgin, never to fail! Oh most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in necessity, Oh Star of the Sea. Help me and show me, here you are “my mother”. Oh Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of heaven and earth. I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to secure me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. DJ

Always in our thoughts, Lovingly remembered by Betty and Family

DOUGLAS J. GREEN August 17, 1956 – November 23, 1997 We continue to remember and miss you, cherished brother! It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since your passing. While you’ve been experiencing “joy unspeakable” in the presence of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the family has grown. Your beloved daughter Kellie-Anne happily married and yes, you’re the grandfather of 5! And uncle to even more nephews and nieces, including 6 lovely young girls adopted from China, 2 of them mine! I’m guessing our very dear mother Barbara Green, who joined you in March 2015, has been filling you in! Your siblings Sue, Myself, Ken, Darren and Deb are all showing our grey hairs now, but it’s my prayer that when God calls each of us home, we shall all embrace again because of this blessed hope in His Word. For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, That whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 Much love, sis Dianne (Green-McNulty)

In loving memory of Clarence Barr A loving husband, father, grandfather who passed away November 23, 2016. I look up to the sky and talk to you, What I would not give to hear you talk back. I miss your voice, I miss everything about you. Always in our thoughts and forever in our hearts. Marlene, children and grandchildren

26 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, November 23, 2017

Gone is the face we loved so dear, Silent is the voice we loved to hear; Too far away for sight or speech, But not too far for thought to reach, Sweet to remember him who once was here, And who, though absent, is just as dear. You’re not forgotten, father, dear Nor ever shall you be; As long as life and memory last We shall remember thee. Much loved and missed, Brian, Bert, and Maureen

(Laurysen Kitchens) With heavy hearts we announce that Albert Dale Jelley of Arnprior passed away rather suddenly at the Ottawa Hospital - Civic Campus on Saturday evening, November 18th, 2017. He was only 64. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen Bender. Twin brother of Dean Jelley of Toronto. Special brother-in-law of Maureen McCoy and her husband Ron of Cobden as well as Michael Bender of Saskatchewan. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. A quiet, unassuming man, Albert enjoyed spending time with his wife and close friends. His passion for playing golf was also shared with Kathleen. When not working in the sanding department at Laurysen Kitchens, Albert loved to tinker and fix things. He will be remembered for his dedication to his feline companions. Taken far too soon. Friends called at the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior for visitation on Wednesday, November 22nd from 5 to 6:45 p.m. A Tribute to Albert took place in the Pilon Family Chapel at 7 o’clock. Central” was planted and maintained by the kindergarten class and some family volunteers. The Good Egg Committee, presently formed of parents and staff, was created and met to create a potential list of the plants student could grow. The list was shared with students, who selected their favourites, which included “les tomates, les pommes de terres, les concombres, les carottes, les citrouilles et les tournesols”. Families donated seeds and student began their investigation into seeds, seed germination and plants. When the weather warmed, small groups of students worked on planning the layout, preparing the soil, and planting the seeds and young plants. Students wanted it to be a space where everyone, including the public, could explore and experience the pleasures of growing fresh vegetables and flowers. Their experiences with the garden have supported their growth and development in many different ways including science, math, languages, geography, art, as well as connections to healthy eating, physical activity, and social development. It was so wonderful to see the students regularly checking on their plants, carrying out conversations about gardening and making new discoveries, including that pumpkins grow on a plant, potatoes grow underground, and small, red cherry tomatoes are not only beautiful to look at but are also delicious. Educators noticed that all students at the school were proud of the garden; for example, they were careful not to let recess toys get into the garden and always respected the simple string barrier around the garden. Some families helped maintain the garden during the summer and Columbus House Daycare, a partner in the Good EGG project, also supported the garden and enjoyed a few meals including beets, lettuce, radishes and spinach. Students are now harvesting tomatoes, beans and potatoes which they suggested they give to the Breakfast Club at the school so that more friends can enjoy the benefits that come with growing a simple row garden and healthy eating. Seedsaving techniques will begin very soon so that the Good EGG project will be able continue again next year, using seeds from Le jardin de l’école Central.

Although quiet this year, this Niger feeder was visited by American Goldfinches (right), and Dark-eyed Juncos last year.”

Helping you is what we do.

To feed or not to feed, that is the question MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

Oft-times I am asked whether feeding animals is good or bad. My answer is that it can be either. If mice are purchased from pet stores to entice owls to come closer for photographs, then it is bad. “Baiting” can have negative consequences such as making an owl habituated so that if it sees humans, it flies toward them to receive a meal. As owls fly low and slowly, cars often hit them when they fly across roads. Pet store mice can contain antibiotics, something foreign to owls. No less important is the fact that releasing a non-native species into the wild is illegal. Especially in earlier years, white-tailed deer were fed to enhance their winter survival. Since the 1960s deer have gone through a tremendous population increase, one that has resulted in a loss of understory in local forests, frequent vehicular accidents and the proliferation of Lyme-carrying deer ticks (the tick abundance is also due to climate change). Nature has a seemingly cruel way of regulating animal populations: in severe winters many die of starvation. But survivors usually carry better genes and as a result, the population’s vigour is strengthened. By artificially keeping the deer or any other animal population at an elevated level, each year there are more mouths to feed, and the overall health of the population becomes weakened. Usually, however, the question about feeding involves birds. Does feeding make migratory birds stay here for the winter? Do bird feeders make birds dependent on them? The answer to both questions is a qualified “no.” I say “qualified” because birds that lack the

migratory instinct or that stray here from another part of the continent are normally doomed. Bird feeders can temporarily sustain those individuals, so they are indeed dependent on them. But as those individuals would inevitably perish without the help of bird feeders, their lives are simply being extended. An Anna’s hummingbird, a west coast species, appeared in Carleton Place in early November and was still present when I dropped by last Friday (Nov. 17). It was alive because it found a hummingbird feeder stocked with sugar-water. Because the water froze at night, the feeder was replaced each morning by a freshly filled one. If that tiny stray, rarely seen in Ontario, hasn’t yet succumbed to the wintry conditions, it likely will in the very near future. If feeders aren’t cleaned regularly, seeds and sugar water can spoil and make birds ill. But they don’t keep birds from migrating. When wild food is plentiful and accessible, some species remain here in large numbers, either ignoring feeders or treating them only as supplementary sources of food. But if wild food is not available, those birds will migrate. This fall, it appears that American Goldfinches have either left or are still finding lots of natural food. Either way, my Niger feeders, like those of many others, sit full and unnoticed. With the cost of Niger seed being so high, this might not be a bad thing! If you feed birds in the Arnprior, Galetta, White Lake or Pakenham area, please let me know, for the Pakenham-Arnprior Christmas Bird Count is fast approaching. The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca.

It was a mystery to me. How Mother could fill out a form, put it in an envelope, enclose no money, put on a three cent stamp and send it off to the people who sent out Eaton’s catalogue, and within days, the mailman would deliver a package right to our door. It was called a C.O.D. order, and I knew that meant Mother had to come up with whatever the mailman asked for when he left the parcel. Another mystery to me was how Mother knew exactly how much money the mailman wanted. But there it was that day when I came from the Northcote School, sitting on the bake table at the back door ... a big parcel wrapped in heavy brown paper, and tied with cord. Not the string like we got at Briscoe’s General Store, but heavy brownish cord, which would be tied around a piece of cardboard when the parcel was opened and packed away for some future use.

I could feel the tingles right down to my toes. Our winter order from Eaton’s had arrived, and it would be opened after supper, only once the dishes had been washed, the table wiped clean, and dried with a flour bag tea towel. Heaven forbid that a spot would get on the parcel that had come all the way from Eaton’s, even before it was opened! We five children could hardly wait. Even though my sister Audrey and I had poured over the catalogue until it was dog-eared, we knew that in the parcel would be only what was completely necessary to get us over the winter. The Christmas toy section, the pages of tin boxes of candy, the pretty dresses ... all frivolities … and certainly wouldn’t be part of Mother’s order. But that didn’t matter ... what Mother unwrapped would be brand new, and that in itself was something to look forward to. Father was the only one who wasn’t sitting around the kitchen table when it came time to open the parcel from Eaton’s. See BLOOMERS, page 35

Bloomers delivered by mail Continued from page 34

He was at his favourite place at the Findlay Oval with his feet resting on the oven door. Mother was at the head of the table, and we children in the spots we always used for our meals, and I looked around and every one of us had our fingers interlocked just like we did when we prayed in church. Mother handed Audrey the string, who already had a piece of cardboard ready. And

then the parcel was unwrapped and there it was - Mother’s order - all neatly stacked by someone in a far away city who didn’t know us from Adam. There was new combination underwear for Father, long johns for my brothers, and new underpants for Audrey, soft with mauve lines in them, and for me the hateful navy blue fleece lined bloomers. I didn’t mind them when they were brand new, but by the time half the winter was over, they would be faded and ugly as sin from many washings, and soakings from sliding

down the little snow-covered hill at the Northcote School. And on the very bottom of the parcel was a neatly folded piece of Dan River cotton … soft coloured plaid with navy blue lines interwoven. Mother would find good use for it. A new house dress, a blouse for Audrey or me? Maybe new aprons. I was sitting beside Mother, and I leaned over and pressed my nose tight against the new material, and then I smelled the new underwear, even Father’s combinations. And I wondered how ev-

erything could come all the way from some big city miles and miles away and still have the smell of newness. And that too was a miracle, I thought. How something could come from so far away, travel by train all the way to Northcote, and still smell so fresh. All I knew about Eaton’s was that they sent us a catalogue twice a year, and whatever Mother needed would be parceled up and sent all the way out to our farm. A miracle indeed. And I sat in wonder at the kitchen table, awed by the newness of what was spread out before me.
