A solid case for expanding another section of Highway 17 was accepted by the provincial transportation minister during his recent visit, but he won’t commit to it anytime soon. .COM Minister Steven Del Duca was in Renfrew Dec. 2 to hear from proponents who want the highway twinned from Scheel Drive just west of Arnprior to town limits at Highway 60 (O’Brien Road). At St. Francis Xavier Hall, about 30 community leaders from throughout the county welcomed the Toronto area Liberal MPP and listened to speakers representing county council, Garrison Petawawa, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), the City of Pembroke, and others. They argued several economic and safety reasons for having the work done within the next 10 years to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017. From national connectivity to regional and local economic benefits for tourism and job creation, to reduced fatalities, the case is an intriguing one, Del Duca indicated.

Compelling case for highway expansion From front page
“All of you collectively are making a compelling case. I’ve heard the message loud and clear,” Del Duca said. “I know this conversation is going to continue.” It was pointed out that the conversation has been ongoing for some 40 years, over successive governments. Del Duca agreed that the province has fallen behind over the decades on infrastructure upkeep and expansion. It’s less about accepting a compelling argument than it is about determining a priority list, he suggested. “It’s not a question of convincing. It’s about catching up and keeping up at the same time,” he said. “Demands are off the charts across the province. So it’s about finding that balance of competing demands.” County Warden Peter Emon said the highway links Northern Ontario and Western Canada to Montreal, Quebec City and Atlantic Canada. A secure, modern and safe TransCanada Highway should be a nationbuilding project for both upper levels of government in the 21st century. It would also redirect traffic to North Bay and Sudbury from the Montreal area, reducing pressure on Toronto’s highways. “This extension will secure economic growth, connect Sudbury, North Bay and Ottawa with a modern highway, create a prosperous northern trade corridor, and showcase
Ontario’s expertise in climate adaptable infrastructure and technologies,” Emon said. With rail no longer an option, area businesses need to ship their goods along Highway 17. Twinning the highway, eventually beyond Petawawa, would bring greater efficiency and predictability to businesses. Tourism could see a boost among city dwellers used to wide corridors. That would bring greater economic benefits to towns and villages across the county. Employment would see a boost along with contractors (larger ones are from Toronto). The safety argument played a larger role in the past. At one point a moving slideshow of many who died on Highway 17 collisions was played at county council. But Emon downplayed that side this time around while still indicating that it matters. “The road is not unsafe, but it has a variety of challenges,” he said, noting that buses in Cobden, tractors at any stretch, and military vehicles can pose as obstacles. “It is well maintained with good sight lines, good rumble strips, and cat’s eyes. That’s not a question for us.” However, he added, small mistakes can be overcome on a four-lane highway. Less so on two. Both Garrison Petawawa and CNL move hazardous and high risk materials along the highway (radioactive, explosives, fuels, specialized transport
vehicles, armoured military vehicles in slow-moving convoys, troop transportation vehicles among them). CNL has 3,000 or more employees and does about $400-million worth of trade. Garrison Petawawa has at least 7,000 people associated with it, living up and down the highway. Military personnel grew from 4,900 in 2006 to 6,100 this year, representing $400-million in salaries. It has seen $671 million in upgrades since 2008. Among the arguments for the case was the group’s due diligence: they have met with at least 22 government officials from both levels over the past few years. John Yakabuski was Del Duca’s guide during his visit to the region. The Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP indicated the project is one step closer to completion. “There is total agreement throughout Renfrew County that the four-laning of Highway 17 is our number one infrastructure priority,” Yakabuski said. “Having minister Del Duca join us today allowed us all to present our case while giving him the full benefit of the lay of the land as well. I look forward to continuing to work with minister Del Duca and the County of Renfrew.” Del Duca was then taken on a tour of the recently upgraded Veterans Memorial Boulevard, funded in part by the province, and Highway 17.

Politicians from near and far gathered on a blustery Friday, Dec. 2, to celebrate the official opening of the improved Veterans Memorial Boulevard. On hand for the ribbon cutting was Warden Peter Emon, MPP John Yakabuski, Mayor Don Eady, Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca and Coun. Mike Coulas. The province kicked in almost $2 million for the work. Eady thanked the government, saying the 1.65 kilometre road is key to the town’s economic success and a vital link to the hospital, downtown and numerous services. “This project would not have happened without these significant provincial funds and we thank the honourable minister for this commitment,” Eady said. “The town is committed to working with the province to keep improving the highways to and through Renfrew.” A multi-use pathway and sidewalk extensions were integrated into the project that sees between 3,000 and 12,000 vehicles on the road daily.

Two people are dead and another is in the hospital after a head-on collision on March Road just south of Hwy. 417 in Carp on Sunday, Dec. 4. Douglas Foster, 69, and Joan Foster, 66, both of Renfrew, were killed in the Sunday evening crash. They died at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus after paramedics had to extricate the pair from their vehicle. Police received the call about the collision at approximately 9:20 p.m. The pair were treated on the scene before being transported to the hospital, one by helicopter and the other by ambulance. However, Const. Chuck Benoit of the Ottawa Police Service said each succumbed to their injuries soon after. “Our community has suffered a huge loss as this wonderful couple who just retired gave their all to the folks of the Town of Renfrew for many years,” said Renfrew Coun. Kate Windle, in an email. Doug ran Foster’s Construction for decades and is former fire chief Randy Foster’s brother. Joan, who is originally from Arnprior, operated hair salon Hairitage in Renfrew for 39 years and had just retired this spring. The 24-year-old male driver of the other vehicle involved was transported to hospital in serious condition. Benoit said his condition has since been updated to serious but stable. Police continue to investigate the collision, but no cause has yet been released. Benoit said it is not known whether the nearby construction on March Road at the 417 played a role. Det. Al Boucher is leading the collision investigation but police sources say it is too early to announce anything definitive about the cause of the accident. The Ottawa Police Service Collision Investigation Unit is asking for assistance from witnesses at the scene of the March Road collision on Sunday evening. Investigators also wish to speak to anyone who was present at scene prior to the collision and to members of the public who attended to the victims, prior to police arrival. No charges have been laid.

For the first time in its 31-year history Sunshine Coach has kicked off a capital fundraising campaign, in addition to its regular radiothon. “We are replacing our 11-year-old bus,” said Norm Dagg, executive director of the Sunshine Coach. “It’s very important for group accessible transportation outings.” Dagg is hopeful there will be many events in 2017 to help raise the needed $150,000. The campaign got started with a donation of $14,000 from J.S. Wilson Financial Management. The company has been running a dinner theatre for the last 10 years, alternating charities to donate to and this year they decided to donate the money raised from their dinner theatre on Nov. 5 by Really Cool Initiatives to Sunshine Coach. “My mom is one of the clients and every Sunday she goes from the (Bonnechere) Manor to church and if it wasn’t for the coach she wouldn’t go,” said John Wilson, president of J.S. Wilson Financial Management. “My parents have also used it for medical appointments as well. Dagg wants everyone to get on the bus with J.S. Wilson Financial. “We have 34,000 trips per year so odds are everyone knows someone who has used it,” said Dagg. “We are announcing this campaign with this very important donation, with this seed donation we are 10 per cent of the way there.” Wilson knows there is a great need in the community and agrees everyone knows someone who uses the service. “It’s for all ages, it affects everybody,” said Wilson. Dagg is very appreciated of the donation and the community support. “Thank you and a thousand thank yous, they have been community supporters along time,” said Dagg. “We are honoured to be the recipient charity, without the community there is no Sunshine Coach.” The Sunshine Coach was started in 1985 as a project of a charitable organization charted as Friends of the Disabled Renfrew Inc., which started with a single accessible bus. Now they have a fleet of 12 completely accessible vehicles that are equipped to handle the needs of clients who are living with any and all forms of disability as embraced by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. They are the accessible transportation partner for Town of Renfrew, Township of Admaston/Bromley, Bonnechere Valley, Greater Madawaska, Horton and White Water Region. Sixth annual Renfrew County paramedic toy/food drive on Dec. 10 at Walmart TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The Christmas countdown is on and what better way to embrace the spirit than by giving back to the community? The County of Renfrew Paramedic services is hosting its sixth annual Christmas toy and food drive at the Renfrew Walmart (980 O’Brien Rd.) on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to drop by with new unwrapped toy donations, food items or cash donations in support of the Renfrew and Area Food Bank and the Salvation Army Christmas Hamper Program. Paramedics Amber Hultink and Steve Osipenko are helping to orga-
nize this year’s event and say they always try and fill the need for the two organizations at Christmas time. “We see people in their home environment and we see the need firsthand,” said Hultink. “We see they don’t have enough food in the fridge or adequate clothing and if they don’t have the means for those necessities, they might not have the means to provide a nice Christmas dinner or presents under the tree.” It is very important for the pair that 100 per cent of money raised and items collected stays right in the communities of Renfrew, Horton, Admaston/Bromley and the surrounding townships. “The toys go to the Salvation Army and the food goes to the food bank,” said Osipenko. “At the end we take the
cash and split it 50/50 between the two groups. We just enjoy volunteering to make a difference in our community.” The paramedics will be easy to find this Saturday. “You can’t miss us, we will be at the right of the doors with the lights flashing and the Christmas music playing,” said Hultink. “We want to pack the back of the ambulance with toys.” Hultink is humbled by the community support. “Our community always comes together and gives us something,” said Hultink. “We are very thankful for their generosity,” added Osipenko. Since 2011 the County of Renfrew Paramedics and volunteers have collected 1,509 toys, 2,735 items of food and $12,269 in cash donations.
Ontario Provincial Police support recent launch of Text with 911 The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is proud to support the national launch of Text with 911 (T9-1-1) for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired (DHHSI). Since April 2015, the OPP has been equipped to receive emergency calls for service via T9-1-1 and for which the OPP is the Primary Public Safety Answering Point (P-PSAP), improving its capacity for emergency response and enhancing the safety for an important segment of the communities it serves. T9-1-1 enables emergency communication with OPP 9-1-1 call takers via text message (Short Message Service or SMS). In order to use
T9-1-1, members of the DHHSI community must register their cell phones with their wireless carrier in advance. Some older model phones may not be compatible. Those who have more than one cell phone will need to register each phone individually. The service is not intended for use by the general public. Police remind the public that the network does not support text to 9-1-1. In fact, there is no Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) in Canada capable of accepting text to 9-1-1 messages at this time. For more information on this initiative, visit the Canadian Wireless Telecommunication Association at www.cwta.ca.
GRAND ROUNDS Giving back: Holiday fever hits RVH staff Going once, going twice… the 10th annual RVH Basket Auction raised an incredible $4,567 to help families in the community have a truly special Christmas morning. Through the RVH Children at Christmas campaign, all funds raised through the effort have been directed to the Phoenix Centre for Children. “This has been a wonderful event,” said Tim Sonnenburg, RVH Vice-President of Financial Services and event Auctioneer. “This is the way that RVH gives back. It makes everyone here so proud to have an opportunity to make a difference in this great community that we serve.” More than $43,000 has been raised since the inaugural auction in 2007. Each department in the hospital is responsible for creating a unique gift basket to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. As fun as it has been for everyone, organizers say it’s time to switch things up and try something new for next year. Ideas are still being discussed for a fresh and exciting
festive fundraising activity to kick off the Christmas season, but more importantly, continue to raise money for the charity. Over the decade, there’s been no shortage of creative contributions—everything needed for an epic movie night, to travel packages with suitcases and sunscreen, to overflowing tins of homemade goodies. All items are donated by the staff and then displayed to make their basket the most sought-after bundle of goodies. Janet Cullen, one of the family and child therapists at the Phoenix Centre was on hand for the event on November 24: “On behalf of everyone in our agency, we would really like to thank you for the lovely fundraiser that you have put together to support our families. We all know that living and working in Renfrew County we come up on some hard times for many of the people that we are working with. Last year we were able to provide Christmas meals and gifts to 18 of our families in need. You help us make a lot of Christmas wishes come true.”
The 2016 Tree of Lights campaign continues into the new year. Contact the Foundation at 613-432-4851 ext. 312 for more information.

OPINION
Connected to your community
Time to stop talking Renfrew County residents could be forgiven if they exercise a little frustration over the whole Highway 17 expansion situation. Some 40 years of holding it in will do that. While we should commend local MPP John Yakabuski for bringing the provincial transportation minister to Renfrew on Friday, Dec. 2, there seems almost a type of collaboration between the Liberal and Progressive Conservative parties to keep the delay going ad infinitum. The talk of expanding the highway to Petawawa – not merely Renfrew - has gone on for decades. What more can be said? Among the reasons given for having Kathleen Wynne’s government commit to the expansion from Scheel Drive to Highway 60 at the Town of Renfrew is: talking. Community leaders have talked to a lot of officials at both levels of government. Twenty-two, at least. They include: • Karen Maxwell, assistant deputy Minister at the ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure; • Charles Finlay, chief of staff at the above; • Tara Acomb, policy advisor for infrastructure at the above; • Nicholas Sherwin, policy advisor, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines; • Derek Lipman, senior advisor, strategic initiatives, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport; • Kelly Singh, policy advisor tourism and outreach, at the above; • Saad Baig, senior policy advisor, Ministry of Finance; • Alexi White, senior policy advisor, office of the Deputy Premier and President of the Treasury Board; • Gurveen Chadha, policy advisor (surface transportation), office of the Ministry of Transportation; • Alain Berinstain, director of policy at the above; • Shane McCloskey, policy advisor (marine), at the above; • John Hnayshyn, director general, north/Atlantic/Ontario, programs branch, Infrastructure Canada; • Chad Westmacott, director, north/ Atlantic/Ontario, programs branch, at the above; • Andrew Campbell, senior executive director (Canada 150 Secretariat), at Canadian Heritage;

That’s a lot of talking by and with people who are very busy talking to lots of other people. However, if talking held out any hope at all of leading to action, we could live with that. Even talking that went on and on. But in this case, at least, it was foretold that talking would lead nowhere. Transportation minister Steven Del Duca travelled all the way up to Renfrew County with zero intention of doing anything but talking. There was nothing that could have convinced him that the highway expansion was needed within the next decade. He even said as much. “It’s not a question of convincing,” he said. “I know this conversation is going to continue.” So, then, all the people in the room that day – mayors who could be helping residents – served no other purpose than that of so many exclamation points on an endless conversation. Del Duca would hear the argument, claim it is compelling, and proceed to do nothing. Some in the room were asked before his arrival if there was any chance he would be swayed and declare his support (meaning talk to the premier about it). They laughed out loud. No. That would give the allusion of progressing toward a decision where there is so much more talking that could take place. It’s analogous to the absurdity of infinite divisibility: so long as there is string it can be cut in half, so long as it can be cut in half there is string. Such is the case with words. It gets a little frustrating.

Another slap in the face to veterans To the editor:
The Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Dominion Command refuses to provide funding for a veterans support group. Another reminder of why veterans are leaving the RCL. Over the last decade legion membership has been dwindling as many veterans and their supporters are joining other veteran groups looking for support and camaraderie. In the most recent slap in the face to veterans, an Ottawa Valley Veteran Support Group’s funding has been refused by Ontario Provincial Command. Local Branch 550. Cobden and District Legion has been providing the group with a meeting space and funding for snacks for the veterans as they meet at the branch to hear speakers from DVA, JPSU, individual and family therapists, government officials as well as marriage counsellors to help veterans dealing with PTSD and the stress of day to day life. The support group has been meeting for over a year and recently a motion to continue funding

the group had been denied by provincial command. Branch 550 in Cobden had made a motion to continue the funding which was passed by its members and executive members at a general meeting. Provincial command responded by denying the branch the use of its poppy funds to support the meeting. Each legion branch has its own poppy fund that is to be used to support veterans and their families in the local area. In response the branch has decided to continue the funding the support group out of its general account if the issue cannot be resolved. This is another slap in the face to veterans, the branch members and its executive. As the Royal Canadian Legion continues to have public fights with veterans these kinds of incidents continue to show a lack of respect and the troubles between the Legion and veterans. Strange creatures walk atop the snow As I try to do each year, on the last weekend of November I went to Algonquin Park for one final paddle around Lake Travers, one of my all-time favourite lakes. This year Travers was two-thirds frozen but still there was plenty to see. Four River Otters, three Common Goldeneyes, and an adult Bald Eagle were excellent company on the outing. The next day I walked along the Achray Road from the closed gate to Grand Lake. To my surprise the lake was completely open, and if the snow hadn’t been mid-calf deep I might have considered walking the kilometre or so back to the car to retrieve my canoe. Although there was no life visible on the water, there was plenty of animal sign atop the pristine snow. Fresh tracks of White-tailed Deer, Marten, Fisher, Eastern Wolf, Red Fox, Red Squirrel, Deer Mouse, and Snowshoe Hare revealed that there’d been plenty of activity since the last snowfall. But apart from a few birds no other animals were encountered. That is, not until the return trip to the car.
On the way back I stopped to photograph some of the mammal tracks and noticed numerous tiny dark objects moving slowly across the snow. A closer look revealed several types of spiders, two minute flies (Fungus Gnats), two wingless Snow Flies (Chionea), which were about five millimetres long, and several other dark insects that were even smaller. These were also wingless and to me were the most exciting of all. They were Snow Scorpions, animals that I ‘d never seen before! Snow Flies and Snow Scorpions are enigmatic creatures. They are most commonly seen walking on top of the snow when the temperature hovers just below to slightly above freezing. Both produce antifreeze that allows them to remain active when other insects either perish or enter a lifeless state of dormancy. Both spend the non-winter months hidden away either below or at ground level. And both reputedly climb up to the snow’s surface to find a mate. Which is about all that Snow Flies
would be able to do since they have no mouthparts and cannot eat. Snow Scorpions, however, do eat. At the end of their unusual “snout reside mouthparts for eating moss. Only males possess the name-giving, scorpion-like appendages on the tip of their abdomen. LOVE NOT WAR
Unlike those of real scorpions, however, the appendages of male Snow Scorpions don’t provide a painful sting; instead, they are used for mating. When a female Snow Scorpion accepts the advances of a male and their abdomens join, the male responds by grabbing her with a pair of thin, hook-like wings and lifting her onto his back. In this odd position she is carried around, sometimes for more than two days! When mating is finished, the female lays her eggs underneath mosses. Next time you go for a winter stroll and the temperature soars to near zero, be sure to look down for tiny black specks atop the snow. If one moves, be sure to have a closer look. Odds are high it will be a creature unlike any you’ve seen before! The Nature Number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca .
Snow Flies (here a female Chionea) are wingless Crane Flies that are generally only seen on warmer winter days walking over the snow.

The only purpose of this male Snow Scorpion’s stinger-like appendage is for mating.

TIFFANY LEPACK/METROLAND
Renfrew Pizzeria owners Julie, left and Don Rodgers, right, present Doug Brookes, centre, president of the Renfrew and District Food Bank, with turkeys and hams for the business’ annual community challenge on Dec. 1.
Renfrew Pizzeria challenges community to donate to food bank TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The challenge has been issued, Renfrew are you ready? Renfrew Pizzeria owners Don and Julie Rodgers have once again issued a challenge to the community and local businesses to support the Renfrew and District Food Bank. The Pizzeria presented eight turkeys and four hams to food bank representative Doug Brookes for the food bank on Dec. 1 and he hopes others will soon follow. "We would like to hopefully have a turkey or ham for every family, every donation is better than nothing," said Don. This year the food bank needs 180 hams and 80 turkeys. "Renfrew Pizzeria is a great community support, it is awesome what they do," said Brookes. "I give tons of thanks to them, this is just great they do it every year." The Rodgers' challenge is simple
but powerful. "I am challenging other businesses to step forward and make a donation to the food bank to help needy families, " said Don. He thinks everyone deserves a good Christmas. "Having your family and friends gathered around a turkey dinner is more meaningful than a physical present," said Don. "At the end of the day family and friends are more important than any financial reward." Renfrew Pizzeria has been issuing the challenge for at least five years now as well as being actively involved in the community by sponsoring sports teams and other local causes. The Renfrew Business Improvement Area was the first to jump on board with the challenge as all money raised from the Shop Hop on Dec. 1 will go towards the purchase of the hams. For donations and to arrange pickups call the food bank directly at 613-433-9216.

Admaston Public School teacher shines on stage at WE Day in Ottawa TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Making a difference locally and globally is one of the many positive messages from WE Day, held annually at the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata. On Nov. 9, one local teacher took centre stage in front of the 15,000 students and spoke to the crowd, especially the teachers. Admaston Public School teacher Karyn Martin was chosen as an educator champion for the event and was honoured to address the crowd. "I'm so proud to be here as a WE Schools teacher, so I want to take a second to congratulate every teacher who's here today," she said from the stage, one of only two teachers to speak to the crowd. "Fostering globally-minded and socially empathetic students is important to me. WE Schools empowers me to do this by gifting me the tools to change my students' lives. And thanks to WE Schools my students and I participated in seven different local and global campaigns this year. Through these campaigns I've seen change materialize right before me eyes." Martin, who attended Arnprior and District High school, earned her bachelor of arts at Trent University

students, is one of the smallest schools that attends the event. "I thought it was cool that she got picked from a really small school," said Grade 6 student Abbi Peer. This is the second time the small school has received a shout out from the stage in the last three years. Principal Catherine McGregor calls it a very proud moment for the school. "I think she has a vision beyond the school, her vision and leadership is with the children," said McGregor. "It's a testament to her perseverance." Grade 6 student Garrett Box thought the event was a lot of fun. "It was inspiring because there were so many people there who had made an impact on the world," said Box. "The Man in Motion (Rick Hansen) was really inspiring, he did it all in a wheelchair!" The school does a number of different outreach programs, including sponsoring a World Vision Child, weekly Change 4 Change Club, donating to the local food bank, Terry Fox, Salvation Army and the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Some of the many special guests at WE Day were: Gord Downie, Prime Minster Justin Trudeau and his mother Margaret, Gov. Gen. David Johnston, singer/dancer Paula Abdul and Serena Ryder.

The Warden’s Community Service Awards were handed out last week at Renfrew County Council. Pictured, from left are Betty Gauthier, Doug Tenant, Pat Lafreniere (United Way) Lois Hopkins, Doug Hopkins (wife and son of Leonard Hopkins) and Ray Pastway (Pastway Planing).
County of Renfrew Warden, Peter Emon presented this year’s Warden’s Community Service Awards at November’s session of County Council. The awards were presented in three categories. Renfrew County United Way was honoured as the not-for-profit organization, Pastway Planing was honoured as the recipient of the business category, and Leonard Hopkins was posthumously honoured with the individual award. The Warden’s Community Service Awards recognize and promote the outstanding efforts by community champions in Renfrew County. Warden Emon expressed his pleasure in bringing to light the excellent contributions the recipients have made to their communities. “Today’s awards recognize the outstanding efforts by community champions in Renfrew County. We honour them for their active roles with social responsibility and community contributions,” said Emon. “It is with great pleasure that I am publicly acknowledging the excellence of these organizations and individuals for their efforts in making Renfrew County better, and
for the great way they inspire others to follow their examples.” Chief administrative officer Jim Hutton in his address to council stressed the importance of the awards and the value of rewarding those who contribute in a positive manner to the County of Renfrew as a community. “Everyday individuals, businesses and organizations make valuable contributions to our community. These contributions are not limited to employment or creation of wealth. Individuals, businesses, and organizations also make important decisions and take real action regarding their social responsibility in Renfrew County,” said Hutton. Each year, A selection review committee comprised of the warden, chief administrative officer, and one member of County Council select the award recipients. Nominees are considered in each of the three categories: individual person, not-for-profit business, and for-profit business. All nominees are considered on the basis of criteria as to how they contribute to the County of Renfrew’s quality of life.

Huge turnout for annual Gourley’s Outdoors deer contest KEITH GOURLEY Gourley’s Outdoors
This year was by far a record breaking year for us. We had 553 people entered into the contest, which is up from 450 entries in 2015. We weighed 94 deer, some of which were the heaviest and healthiest that we have ever seen. It was a little warm to hunt but all in all it was a great two weeks of weather. We believe this year’s increase in successful hunters and healthy deer is largely a result of the warm fall in 2015, which resulted in fewer bucks being harvested. We also had a very mild winter last year with little snow, which allowed the deer to feed much easier and avoid predators. There has also been a rise over the past few years in hunters practicing quality deer management where they are going through a lot of effort and expense to provide food plots, mineral stations and feeding areas to help keep the local deer population healthy. Food plots along with proper selective harvesting is a key factor in establishing a healthy herd. We also now have a QDMA Canada Renfrew County Branch with a wealth of knowledge and experience at our disposal. We encourage anyone looking
to do food plots, mineral stations or if you would like assistance in stand location etc. to contact Phil Lambert of Valley Guiding and Outfitting. Lambert is local to the valley, a QDMA sponsor, offers property management and a full line of seed, mineral and feed additives. With the rut full on we are anticipating a very good muzzleloader season and late bow hunt. Thanks to our local hunters, hunters visiting the Valley, great customers, friends and sponsors we were able to raise $3,540 for the Renfrew Victoria Hospital by doing our annual fundraising barbecue/bake sale with Bluewave Energy on the opening weekend. We were able to donate $1,640 to the Hospice Renfrew with the funds remaining from the cost of running our contest. We also raised $482 for the Renfrew Fish and Game by running a 50/50 during the contest. None of this would have been possible without the assistance from some great local sponsors such as Renfrew’s Protyre - Tire Sales and Service, Irish Creek Outfitters, Valley Guiding & Outfitting, Jakes Custom Leather, The Renfrew Pizzeria and The Whitewater Brewery. Please help us support them back whenever it is possible. See DEER, page 27

Pink on the Rink ringette game Dec. 11 in Renfrew TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The first ever Ringette Day in Renfrew is Sunday, Dec. 11. “It’s super exciting,” said Angela Kluke, event organizer. Renfrew Council made the declaration at its Nov. 22 meeting. This Sunday is also the third annual Pink on the Rink game, which Kluke has been running for the last two years, to help different teams with tournament fees. Pink on the Rink is a chance to come out and watch the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Junior A ringette team take on a team of a number of well-known adults who play hockey. But the twist is, they say, “we aren’t going to tell the adults the rules.” The game will take place on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 3 p.m. at Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre, the fun starts with free admission, just a donation. Kluke explained she thought it was really important the players understood the value of the sponsorship and wanted them to learn it. During Frew-Tober the girls volunteered to help keep the festival area clean. “As a result of that the town said

Lilly Kluke, Hannah Hubert, Malorey Lambert and Erica Mosseau from the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Junior A ringette team walked in the Renfrew Santa Claus parade on Dec. 3 helping to spread the word for Ringette Day in Renfrew. I could send in for a proclamation,” said Kluke. The Pink on the Rink is usually focused on one team but since the proclamation things are growing. “Ringette Day in Renfrew is in support of all UOV teams,” said Kluke. The Pink on the Rink game fund-
raiser is for the Junior A team that is playing. However, other UOV teams involved will be running a number of other fundraising events: a raffle, bake sale, book sale. According to Ringette Canada: Ringette is a Canadian invention that
NOTICE TO RESIDENTS
has become one of the fastest team sports on ice since its creation in 1963, when Sam Jacks saw a need for a winter team sport for girls. Since then, the sport has continued to grow and currently has near 30,000 registered players on nearly 2,000 teams, over 8,000 coaches and more than 1,500 officials. Ringette is like hockey as it is played on ice with skates and sticks with six players per team on the ice at once. The association’s website describes the game’s objective: to score goals by shooting the object of play into the opposing team’s net at either end of the rink during stop-time periods of play. But this is where the comparisons between ringette and hockey really end. The stick is straight. The object being pursued by the players is a rubber ring, not a puck. There is no intentional body contact. And the rules of ringette make it a wide-open and dynamic sport. Kluke’s daughter wanted to play after seeing the girls wearing the pink jerseys in a parade. “I am a firm believer in ringette for young girls, it was simple awareness,” said Kluke. “It’s a really great venue for girls to be involved in be-
cause it helps with their confidence and they develop friendships outside of school.” For this year’s edition of Pink on the Rink the adult team is comprised of: Randy Penney, Renfrew Victoria Hospital; Scott Campbell, Renfrew Collegiate Institute; Steve St. Micheal, Mill Music; Don Rodgers, Renfrew Pizzeria; Kip Mulvihill, St Joseph’s Catholic High School; Greg Utronki, Al Utronki’s Appliances & TV Centre; Dr. Shawn Bulger, Renfrew Family Chiropractic; Jim Lemenchick, Magellan Aerospace-Haley; Urban Donlevy, Urban Ford/Urban Sports; Dr. Lucas Regier, Renfrew Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Centre, Patrick Cayan, Ottawa Valley Physiotherapy; Cory Smart, myFM; Tom Cobus, Cobus Homes; and Jon Pole, myFM (might not be able to play); referee: Jeff Miller-Ottawa Valley Solar. Kluke says it is a fun community based event that helps brings awareness to the sport. “It’s really fun to watch, they are all well-known and are hockey players and they try a new sport out of their comfort zone,” said Kluke. Wolves lose two amidst trades TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
The Renfrew Timberwolves are looking ahead to next year. The Central Canada Hockey League Tier 2 team is currently in last place of the Richardson Division with eight points and a record of just three wins and 22 losses. The team made a number of transactions late last week to prepare for next year and give some of their older players a chance at winning it all. “What we’ve done is for the players not returning next year, now is the time to let them play with a playoff team,” said Corey Foster, Timberwolves head coach. On Nov. 30, Renfrew sent Kurtis Keohane, who had 17 goals and seven assists with the Timberwolves this year, to the Winchester Hawks. “We will get two protected picks from Winchester,” said Foster. “That’s better than nothing.” On Nov. 29, they loaned Jonathan Rosien and Luca Marinic to the Arnprior Packers Next year their rights will go back to Renfrew. In the same transaction the Timberwolves picked up Jack Rouleau and Jonathan Ready from Arnprior. On Nov. 26 the Timberwolves loaned Andrew McIntyre and Jerim Ryan to Perth. The team also sent Dallas Farr and Corey Chaplin to Perth in exchange for Cameron Scissons and Chad Moore. “Anyone who is eligible for next year will be back,” said Foster. “So it worked out for us.” It was a bit of a tough weekend for the Timberwolves. They lost both of their games - one to the Prescott Flyers, who are in fifth place of the Richardson Division with a 11-14 record for 27 points and the second loss came at the hands of the number one team in the division, the Richmond Royals who are sporting a 21-6 record for 44 points. “Friday and Sunday were not the results we wanted but I like the direction of the year with

the young guys we got. It’s good for these guys to get more playing time and get them ready for next year,” said Foster. FLYERS 4 TIMBERWOLVES 3
On Friday, Dec. 2, the Timberwolves hosted the Prescott Flyers at home in Renfrew. It was a close battle that saw the Timberwolves make a comeback in the second period but in the end, they fell to the Flyers 4-3. At the seven-minute mark of the second period the Flyers were up 4-0. Moore got his first goal as a Timberwolf at 10:42 assisted by Jake McGrimmon. Riley Poirier started the third off on the right foot getting on the score sheet at 1:40 into the final stanza assisted by Isaac Perreault. Adam Pearson, assisted by Perreault and Ryan Pettigrew, made it a close finish as he scored at 18:45. Ethan Lapenskie made 29 saves in the loss for the Timberwolves. ROYALS 5 TIMBERWOLVES 2
At the end of the first it was a tie game as Poirier got on the board just over two minutes into it. But the Royals exploded in the second with three unanswered goals. In the final frame the teams exchanged goals as Pettigrew scored at 8:58 of the third assisted by Perreault and getting his first point in Renfrew is Cameron Scissons. “We had lots of opportunities (against Richmond). With the youth that we have, the guys are really working hard,” said Foster. “Hopefully we can finish the second half off with a good showing.” The Timberwolves only have one game this week as they hit the road to travel to face the Perth Blue Wings at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9 Perth is the second place team in the Richardson Division with a record of 21-4 for 43 points. Rounding out the top three are the Arnprior Packers with a 20-7 record for 41 points.
Invitation to Review The County of Renfrew has recently completed the Draft 2017-2026 Forest Management Plan for the Renfrew County Forest. The Forest Management Plan (FMP) outlines the objectives and strategies for the sustainable management of County-owned forest, as well as operational details on County Forest lands for the time period of January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2026.
i) Application to amend the Official Plan of the Township of McNab/Braeside. ii) A public meeting regarding an amendment to the Official Plan of the Township of McNab/Braeside. Subject Lands
Part of Lots 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, Concessions 6 and 7, in geographic Township of McNab, in the Township of McNab/Braeside, fronting on Hidden River Road, Gunsmith Road and a portion of Robertson Line between Hansons Creek and the Madawaska River, as shown on the attached Key Map.
Public Meeting
A public meeting to inform the public of the proposed official plan and will be held on January 10, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. at the municipal office of the Township of McNab/Braeside.
Proposed Official Plan The purpose and effect of the proposed Official Plan amendment is to redesignate approximately 82 hectares of land that gain access over Robertson Line. Robertson Line, at this location, has a significant design deficiency that creates potential constraints and hazards for vehicle operation particularly when the road is snow-covered or icy. The proposed amendment will redesignate the affected lands to Rural Exception-Five that will allow vacant lots to be developed but will prohibit new lot creation. The effect of the amendment is to prohibit additional new lots until the road deficiency is corrected in order to prevent an increase in potential incidents. Additional information regarding the Official Plan amendment is available for inspection at the Township of McNab/Braeside municipal office during regular office hours. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Township of McNab/Braeside before the proposed Official Plan amendment is adopted by the Township, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision of the County of Renfrew (approval authority), to the Ontario Municipal Board. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting, or make written submissions to the Township of McNab/Braeside before the proposed Official Plan amendment is adopted by the Township, the person or public body may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the Ontario Municipal Board unless, in the opinion of the Board, there are reasonable grounds to add the person or the public body as a party. If you wish to be notified of the adoption of the proposed Official Plan amendment, or of the refusal of a request to amend the Official Plan, or for further information, you must make a written request to: Lindsey A. Parkes, CAO/Clerk Township of McNab/Braeside 2508 Russett Drive RR2 ARNPRIOR, ON K7S 3G8 (613) 623-5756 or 1-800-957-4621 info@mcnabbraeside.com NOTE: One of the purposes of the Planning Act is to provide for planning processes that are open, accessible, timely and efficient. Cartman MVP wrestler in Nfld. Jake Cartman accompanied his coach Grant Lavallee on Nov. 26 to compete in a senior (over 19) wrestling tournament 45 minutes outside of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Cartman captured the gold medal wrestling through his weight class without allowing a single opponent to score a point against him. He easily won each match by superiority with a 10-0 score rather than pinning his opponents. Cartman, who normally would complete at 65 kilos, wrestled in the next highest weight class (76 kilo) giving up over 20 pounds to his opponents and still had no difficulty in any of his matches. “It was pretty impressive to see almost everyone in the room stop to watch his matches; the only wrestler from Ontario,” said coach Grant Lavallee. “With a number of coaches and wrestlers talking about how talented and fast his was.” To challenge Cartman, Lavallee arranged exhibition matches for Cartman at the end of the tournament. “I wanted to ensure that Jake got a good workout during this trip and just didn’t have an easy ride as he did in his 76 kilo weight class,” said Lavallee, who arranged for Cartman to wrestle one of the wrestlers he had met earlier in the day and again Cartman dominated. Lavallee had the referees have two other wrestlers wrestle and then Cartman was put onto the
mat again with little rest to compete against the 65 kilo gold medalist. Cartman again had little difficulty but fatigue was setting in. Lavallee again had two other wrestlers wrestle and Cartman was on the mat for the third time against a wrestler who was larger and older than him. Cartman jumped to an early lead 10-2 by the end of the first round. Fatigue had set in by the second round but Cartman held on, winning 10-8 and completing the day undefeated. To add to Cartman’s gold the organizers selected him as the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. “We enjoyed the Newfoundland hospitality although the weather was overcast the entire time,” said Lavallee. “Jake plans on competing in Guelph at his next tournament.” Lavallee was himself kept busy at this tournament as Newfoundland was also trying to increase numbers and the quality of their referees. A National A referee was brought from Nova Scotia to the tournament to instruct and train new want-to-be refs and those who wanted to be upgraded. Lavallee was asked by the head ref to monitor and instruct the refs assigned to the main senior mat and help train the officials. Submitted by Grant Lavallee
Lavallee trains NFLD wrestling coaches Grant Lavallee was called to travel to St. John’s, Newfoundland to be the Learning Facilitator (LF) for a required coaching course. Lavallee, who is the only approved Learning Facilitator in Eastern Ontario, was contacted by the Newfoundland Wrestling Association as Newfoundland does not have a LF on the island. Lavallee is certified to present the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and on this occasion presented to 24 coaches the NCCP Part A of Competition – Introduction Course. This 20-hour course, which is universal in theory for all of the 60 sports Sport Canada recognizes, was conducted over a Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 26 to 27 and following a wrestling tournament. Wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, MMA and Judo coaches were present looking to enhance their skill in coaching and will return to the classroom in December to complete the NCCP Part B Competition – Introduction course. Part of Lavallee’s role was to train a local coach; Peter Petipas to become a LF who can conduct these courses in Newfoundland. Petipas was successful and will conduct this second course saving much expense on airfare etc. Lavallee will however need to return in January to conduct the next level so that coaches are qualified to coach at the Canadian Summer
Games in Winnipeg in August 2017. This competition – development course is very involved and is a requirement if coaches wish to coach at the university, or international level. Coaches will be pushed to learn this in-depth material where they design a yearly program for each of their athletes. It is a busy time being a LF says Lavallee who will be off to Halifax in December to facilitate the competition – development course there so coaches again will be able to coach at the Summer Games. It has been a busy schedule for Lavallee who in the past few months conducted courses for the Ottawa Catholic School Board where over 20 coaches took part, then to Brampton where over 40 coaches were present. “I’m supposed to be retired but enjoy presenting very much and find everyone learns from the experience,” he said. “Learning different things from coaches is always rewarding be it different warm ups, different drills or strategies for dealing with various issues we just keep growing as coaches.” Those that shy away from these opportunities are really missing the boat and handicapping their athletes, he added. Curlers qualify for regionals 7-7. They then settled down with the hammer coming home and scored one for the win. In game two they faced Richmond’s Andy Hall and survived a nail-biter to win 6-5. A few misses early and some good shot-making by the Hall team had the local team down 5-2 going into 7th end. The Smith rink scored two in seventh, stole one in the eighth then stole one in extra end for the win. The difference maker was skip Gary Smith who drew four shots to the button behind guards in those ends to steal the win. Lead Phil Marcella played well and had consistent weight through out both games allowing the key ends to be set up. Of note, the Smith team took down two past champions of this event in advancing. This is the time of the year when we are asked to serve those in need and express our generosity for all that we have. It is certainly the approach I take and my opposition always enjoy my generosity. But that is not the only thing available to you at the curling club. Instead you may wish to bring in non-perishable food items for our annual food drive to restock the shelves at our local food bank. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 19.

Each year golfers dream of the Masters and that one chance to play in the big one. Curlers over 60 feel the same way and this year, two Renfrew teams took advantage of home ice and passed their first test and qualified for the regionals, the second and last step leading to the Masters Provincials. As always, there are easy ways to do things and there are hard ways. The first round took place in Renfrew on the weekend of Nov. 27 and the team of Rob Warren, Don Rouble, Ron Townson and Andy Humphries had the luck of the draw and advanced with a single win when they defeated Dwayne Lowe’s Huntley rink 8-2, shaking hands in seven ends. The guys played well and were never really in trouble. The other Renfrew team of Gary Smith, Dave Eady, Rory McKay and Phil Marcella also advanced but they did it the hard way. In game one they defeated Carleton Heights CC’s Ed Warren 8-7. The team took an early lead and were in control of match until a strategic error in seventh when they gave up four to tie the game at

A penny saved was a penny well earned Every cent I owned was laid out on my bed. I had untied it from the corner of my hankie, and no matter how often I counted it, I still had only 31 cents. I knew I was getting 25 cents from Mother as were my three brothers and sister, all because of the success of Turkey Fair day held in Renfrew. That money, with whatever else we were able to squirrel away, was to be used to buy our Christmas presents for everyone in the family. And that quarter just wasn’t handed to us willy-nilly...no siree, we had to earn it! To get ready for Turkey Fair Day, we kids had to wash eggs, pluck and clean chickens and turkeys, and help Mother make dozens of sticky buns, all of which would be sold from our flat-bottomed sleigh on the main street in Renfrew. And if sales were brisk, and only if sales were brisk, were we each given a whole quarter. So with the quarter and my 31 cents, I was still short 44 cents. I had been casing the Five and Dime Store in Renfrew for weeks and knew exactly what I was going to buy. My entire wad would be for Father’s Christmas present. I would have to use my imagination to come up with presents for the rest of the family, but Father, I knew would be thrilled with what I desperately wanted to give him. The only problem was finding another 44 cents. For the longest time, we could see Father squinting more and more when he was reading the Ottawa Farm Journal. Mother said it was time to get into Renfrew to have his eyes tested and to get a pair of proper reading glasses. Well, as soon as Father heard it would cost $2 for the test alone and that didn’t even include the glasses, he said there was no way in hell
hardly read anymore, all I had was 56 cents, but I had two dozen eggs, and was there anyone in the store who might be interested in a good deal on eggs that had been taken right out of the hen MARY COOK house that very morning? I thought I saw her he was going to waste that kind wipe the corner of her of money, and he could see eyes with her sleeve and said as just fine, as we saw the paper a matter of fact, she herself was getting closer and closer to his just about to get eggs that very eyes. Well, I had seen a whole day and she would be delighted rack of glasses at the Five and to take them off my hands. She Dime and they were only $1 a paid 50 cents for the eggs and pair and right then and there, I I had six cents leftover, and I decided Father would have his grabbed a pair of the glasses, glasses! I would give them to which came with a case and him for Christmas! was sure I was going to burst I didn’t want to give away my with excitement. The woman secret, but I knew I had to bring even wrapped them in white Mother into my confidence to tissue paper and said Father see if she had any ideas on how was to come in himself after I could come up with another Christmas and change them 44 cents. She said it wouldn’t be for any pair that suited better. I fair to my brothers and sister if couldn’t fathom such kindness! she just handed over another 44 Coming up with presents for cents to me. She mulled it over everyone else, when I only had for a while and then came up six cents to my name, took evwith what I thought was just ery bit of imagination I could about the smartest idea I had muster. I knit a dish cloth for ever heard of. She said I could Mother, I gave Audrey one of gather eggs, about two dozen the hankies I was given at last she figured, and I could sell year’s Christmas concert and them myself in Renfrew and every time I went into Briscoe’s raise the extra money. General Store and Mr. Briscoe And so, on a cold and win- handed me a humbug, (which tery Saturday, I took the two I hated anyway) I asked if he dozen eggs and went into Ren- minded if I changed it for a frew with Mother, who had licorice pipe and that was what her own peddling to do, and I my three brothers were getting headed right for the Five and from me for Christmas. Dime Store, and the counter I just knew in my heart, it with all the glasses laid out in was going to be the best Christneat rows. I put the little pail mas ever! of eggs on the counter and Interested in an electronic started to try on the glasses. version of Mary’s books? LAW, Kay A loving Mom, Grandma who passed away December 7, 1983. Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, Love leaves a memory that no one can steal. Love Ann, David and Sarah
Her loving face we hope to see again, Though the days have passed away; Sleep on dear mother, and take your rest, We miss you most who loved you the best.
Marilyn Marie MacMillan December 1, 2005 There’s a little place within my heart, That is with me every day, A place where all my memories, Are softly tucked away. And now that once again, Christmas has come around. It’s where the sweetest memories, And thoughts of you are found. Love and miss you everyday Kenny, Natalie, Kevin, Stephen, Sandra, Grace and Blake
Remembrance is a golden chain, Death tries to break but all in vain, To have – to love and then to part, Is the greatest sorrow of one’s heart. The years might wipe out many things, But this they wipe out never, The memory of those happy days, When we were all together. Lovingly remembered Blanche and Family

Grace Olivia Jean Glofcheskie
BSc’13 MSc’15 March 6, 1991 - December 13, 2015 It has been a year since Grace was taken from this world, her family and her friends in a senseless hit and run. We would like to thank the many who have helped and continue to support us on a journey that no family ever wants to endure. We miss Grace, not only for what she had done but even more for what she would have accomplished next. Her communities of Arnprior, Barry’s Bay and Guelph have done so much to honour Grace’s memory. Grace loved life, academics and athletics. She knew to carpe diem. We will light the Grace candle to help break the darkness. Continued support of the Grace Glofcheskie Memorial Scholarship at the University of Guelph is much appreciated. We proudly presented the 2016 Award in November to fellow Gryphon, Heather Petrick, at the College of Biological Sciences Awards. Special thanks to Team Grace for hosting Charity Golf Tournaments in Arnprior and Guelph where her favourite game was played in wet weather. From her heavenly home, we know that Mama G watches over her family and friends and will intercede for us. Momento Gratia. We will always say her name. We will say Grace. Love You Forever, Hugs Dad, Mom, Adam, Luke, Rachel
Mary Brydges (Lancaster) December 25, 1931 – December 6, 2001 In loving memory of our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you, and whispered “Come to Me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, we watched you fade away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands now rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only took the best. Loved and Always Missed Art, Paul, Nancy, Sue, Jim and Families

ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD NOTICE TO CUSTOMERS OF ENBRIDGE GAS DISTRIBUTION INC., UNION GAS LIMITED AND NATURAL RESOURCE GAS LIMITED Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc., Union Gas Limited and Natural Resource Gas Limited have each applied for approval to recover the costs associated with their cap and trade compliance plans. The costs of the proposed plans would raise natural gas rates by $6 to $7 on average per month starting January 1, 2017 for residential customers. The exact amount of the increase will depend on the amount of gas you use and on your gas utility. Other customers, including businesses, may also be affected. Learn more. Have your say. Under the Government of Ontario’s new greenhouse gas emissions regulation each of Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc., Union Gas Limited and Natural Resource Gas Limited are required to develop plans to meet their cap and trade compliance obligations. New costs will be incurred by each of the natural gas utilities to comply with the regulations. The Ontario Energy Board will assess the cost-effectiveness of each of the cap and trade compliance plans filed by the natural gas utilities to determine whether the gas utilities can recover those costs in the rates they charge customers. THE ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD IS HOLDING A PUBLIC HEARING The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) will hold a combined public hearing to consider Enbridge Gas, Union Gas and Natural Resource Gas’ requests. We will question each of the gas utilities on their cap and trade compliance plans and on each of their cases for a rate change to implement those plans. We will also hear questions and arguments from individual customers and from groups that represent Enbridge Gas, Union Gas and Natural Resource Gas’ customers. The OEB will assess whether the compliance plans are costeffective to determine whether the recovery of the cap and trade costs from customers is reasonable. The OEB is an independent and impartial public agency. We make decisions that serve the public interest. The fifth annual Renfrew County Stewardship Forum was held at the Renfrew Legion on Nov. 30. Jason Davis, manager of forestry and GIS at the County of Renfrew, speaks to the large crowd including Arnprior Mayor David Reid, right and Renfrew Mayor Don Eady (not pictured). Davis told the large crowd that 447 people attended the six open houses on the Ottawa Valley Recreation Trail. The county received 115 comments on the project and he welcomes more by email ovrt@countyofrenfrew.on.ca.
Great turnout for fifth annual Renfrew County Stewardship forum More than 30 people came out for the fifth annual Renfrew County Stewardship Forum in Renfrew on Nov. 30. The forum was organized by the Ottawa River Institute, the Bonnechere River Watershed Project and Sustainable Eastern Ontario with the purpose of connecting people and organizations with an interest in the environment, a strong sense of place, and a concern about the future. The theme for this year’s forum was ‘Our Trails, Our Future’ and focused on community involvement in developing multi-use trails and trail networks in the Ottawa Valley, with a particular focus on the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail (OVRT) along the former CPR rail corridor. The OVRT will offer a great opportunity for local citizens to get involved in what promises to be one of
the Ottawa Valley’s prime recreational assets. The annual day-long forum featured speakers from many local groups and organizations and was an opportunity for trail user groups to express their interests and concerns and to hear of some best practices in trail development, use and maintenance. Present at the forum were representatives from area snowmobile clubs, ATV clubs, cycling clubs, recreation directors and mayors from local municipalities and the County of Renfrew, local organizations, and interested Renfrew County residents. A report on the forum will be available soon on the Ottawa River Institute’s and Bonnechere River Watershed Project’s websites. (www. ottawariverinstitute.ca and www.bonnechereriver.ca).

“Christmas came early this year,” announced Jane Wouda, chief executive officer of the Admaston/Bromley Public Library (ABPL) in Douglas. “Thanks to the generous donations and unwavering support of our library patrons.” The library’s open house, held Monday Nov. 28, celebrated the library’s achievements in 2016 and featured several presentations and a Christmas craft for the children. The library received a grant from Barclay Dick and Son Farm Supply to purchase a new literacy kit. This kit contains seven new books on the theme ‘body safe/body smart.’ Lauretta Rice also dropped by to a donate a new cookbook ‘Pulses,’ which was produced by the Renfrew County National Farmers Union.
Lynn Clelland and Leanne Enright gave a brief presentation about the joint effort between the Balsam Hill Women’s Institute and the ABPL to create an Art Tree that honours the rural communities and groups that make up the amalgamated Township of Admaston/Bromley. The Art Tree Project is part of the Canada 150 celebrations. Finally, Charlene Dick, member of the ABPL board, shared the great news that the library was one of only 66 winners throughout Canada of a $2,500 grant from the 2016 Canada’s Farmers Grow Communities program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. Each non-profit was nominated by a local farmer (Karen Coulas) who applied on behalf of their favourite cause. “This grant represents a great opportunity to promote literacy and lifelong learning at the library and in the community,” says Wouda.
