Perfect scores for Renfrew’s drinking water

Inside NEWS

Steve Newman steve.newman@metroland.com

News - Renfrew’s drinking water system has received perfect scores from the Ministry of the Environment. The 30-page annual report from Susan Lo, Ontario’s chief drinking water inspector, scored Renfrew 100 per cent for its inspection rating and 100 per cent for its drinking water quality. Development and works director Mike Asselin says the scores are something “we’re proud of.” By comparison, inspection ratings around the province included 86.94 per cent for the City of Kawartha Lakes’ Lindsay drinking water system, 94.39 for London, 96.20 for Owen Sound, 98.4 for Perth and 100 per cent for dozens of

Ontario communities, including Kingston, Vaughan, Tweed, Wasaga Beach and some of Toronto’s drinking water systems. The many perfect scores for drinking water quality went to such communities as Uxbridge, two of Toronto’s five drinking water systems, Perth, the City of Prince Edward County and Sioux Lookout. The annual report said 60 per cent of municipalities received 100 per cent inspection ratings. The report noted “99.87 per cent of the 525,199 drinking water test results from municipal residential drinking systems met Ontario’s rigorous drinking water quality standards.” In 2011-12, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment inspected 676 municipal residential drinking water systems.

Infrastructure levy fee part of budget considerations steve.newman@metroland.com

News - Renfrew council is considering adding an infrastructure levy fee of onequarter of one percentage point to the 2014 tax bill for infrastructure reserves. Luc Bégin of Dillon Consulting made that observation while presenting the town’s asset management plan to the Dec. 9 meeting of Renfrew council. If Renfrew taxes rise by two per cent in 2014 and the infrastructure levy fee is approved, a taxpayer’s tax increase would end up at 2.25 per cent. The small levy increase would represent about $17,000, which would be placed in a reserve fund. As a requirement for future government grants, a municipality’s asset management plan needs to be completed. Dillon is completing plans for municipalities both big and small in Ontario, for whom

lack of infrastructure government funding remains a big concern. There are infrastructure issues for Ontario municipalities pretty well everywhere and Renfrew is no exception to the rule, said Bégin. Nevertheless, Renfrew can still say it has pulled its weight in recent years, with the help of the provincial and federal government, by completing infrastructure projects valued at $54 million from 2003 to 2012. That work, and evidence that the town is setting aside extra funds for infrastructure, may bode well for Renfrew down the road, said Bégin. That decade of work consisted of $7.2 million for roads and bridges, $15.6 million for water-treatment infrastructure and $31.5 million for wastewater treatment.

Bob Barker, chairman of the National Hockey Association/National Hockey League Birthplace Museum, shows council members Renfrew sections of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s recent book on the history of hockey, A Great Game. Barker addressed Renfrew council Dec. 9 to stress the importance of supporting the museum. The museum, which officially opened last summer in the Canada Post building, has a 2014 budget of $22,000. That includes $12,000 being sought from town council. Revenue sources include $14,600 in grants, $1,200 in merchandise sales, $6,000 in fundraising and $400 in admissions. Coun. Tom Anderson said council may be hard pressed to provide $12,000 without reducing services in another part of the budget. Museum expenses include furnishings, office operations, honorariums and advertising. Barker said he’s convinced the museum will grow with time and be a strong drawing card for tourists in years to come. STEVE NEWMAN/METROLAND

Three options were considered, Taylor told the Dec. 9 meeting of Renfrew council. Option 3 was a straight extension of Hall Avenue, which crossed the widest portion of the ravine, or for about 100 metres. Option 2 angled across the subdivision to come out halfway between Wrangler road and the location of the straighter extension. Option 1, which has been selected as the way to go, swings down farther to the south to land that housed an ammunitions factory in the First World War, and comes out behind Canadian Tire at Gibbons Road. The first option also impinges the least on a regionally-rare species of black maple. That’s because the trees can’t be removed, since they’re part of the 25-metre old historical road that crosses the ravine. The road used to lead to the munitions factory. The first option, said Taylor, turned out to be the best natural-environment solution and the best from a land-use perspective.” That option was recommended by the pubSteve Taylor of Bytown Engineering addresses Renfrew council about the three options lic works department and BTE, then approved by town council Dec. 9. corridor is about one kilometre. The approval completes phase two of the environmental assessment. Phase three will focus on defining the design of sidewalks, roadway alignment, intersections property requirements and the ravine crossing. Phase four consists of the completion and filing of the environmental study. Phase five is implementation of the project. Knowing that funding may not be immediately available, Asselin noted the town will have 10 R0012442036

years, from the outset of phase five, to start building the corridor. That may be some years down the road, or it may be sooner than later, depending on how the transportation system evolves, said Asselin. Funds are set aside from development charges to advance the project’s next two phases. Taylor estimated the project’s phase four report, which will be subject to public scrutiny, will be completed in late 2014 but more likely in 2015.

No injuries, as sheds destroyed at Lochiel Street residence Steve Newman steve.newman@metroland.com

News - Renfrew residents Irvin and Marion Riopelle are alive and uninjured after an early-morning Thursday fire destroyed three sheds at the back of their house. The Renfrew Fire Department responded to a fire call for 194 Lochiel St. S., where the couple has lived for more than 30 years. Irvin, 79, had just gotten up to take some medication and looked out the front window and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Turning around, he saw a different picture out the side window, where one of the sheds was half-flattened by flames. “My wife was sound asleep, says Irvin. Twenty members of the fire department, including 11 full-time firefighters, responded to the call made at 2:42 a.m. from a Bonnechere Street neighbour, who got up to go to the washroom and noticed the flames. A few minutes later, farther down Lochiel Street, Chris Riopelle was notified by a friend who heard the call on a police scanner.

In a panic, Chris went running down the street and passed a police officer, in search of his dad and stepmom, only to be told they were sitting in the nearby ambulance. “It scared the supreme crap out of me, said Chris of the earlymorning episode. Upon arrival, the duty crew was faced with heavy smoke at the rear of the home. Their quick response held fire damage to the three rear sheds attached to the home. After quickly controlling the fire, firefighters remained on the scene until just after 5 a.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Damage to the sheds was extensive, and there was minor smoke and water damage to the remainder of the house, said Fire Chief Guy Longtin. The couple’s STEVE NEWMAN/METROLAND dog and cat escaped injury. Irvin Riopelle stands in the middle of one of three sheds that sustained heavy damage in an early-morning fire Dec. 12. Two freezers were coated in ice after the fire, but their contents may be salvageable. Only some old clothes and a lawnmower appear to have been destroyed in the fire. A new snowblower in hš‘ cf ^šŽ|‘“—‘| a fourth shed was left untouched.

“One of the unknowns in this whole asset management process is how the province is going to use these plans to evaluate (municipalities),â€? said Renfrew development and works director Mike Asselin. “We’re talking about ways to eliminate the gap (with more funding for infrastructure). We already have fairly high debt levels, we have high taxation, we have high water rates. If we present a plan that says we do it all ourselves, we can afford it, that may be justiďŹ cation for the Province to say this municipality doesn’t need any funding.â€? If the municipality continues to pay off a lot of debt and can demonstrate that substantial ďŹ nancing has gone into infrastructure upgrades, then maybe the Province will look more favourably at funding future infrastructure projects in Renfrew, explained Asselin. “So there is a gap that has to be

ďŹ lled by somebody else or something else,â€? he added. Asselin said the asset management plan paints a realistic picture of where this municipality is at, and it backs it up with numbers and level of service. The province does not want to give money to municipalities unless they show that they know how to manage that money, said BĂŠgin. Dillon Consulting began Renfrew’s asset management plan in early 2013. “Everybody knows that everywhere in Canada infrastructure is decaying faster than the money’s coming in, and Renfrew is not any different,â€? said BĂŠgin. Renfrew’s infrastructure situation is relatively healthy, he explained. “There’s signiďŹ cant backlog (on infrastructure that requires upgrades) ‌ There’s a need for resurfacing right now, there’s a need for road and underground utilities (work), because the concept of asset management is not to wait until it (infrastructure) fails, but to replace it before it fails, or you’ll triple or quadruple your

costs.â€? Meanwhile, BĂŠgin says Renfrew has an effective monitoring system for its infrastructure. “They’re very well informed, and they’re dealing with it.â€? Dillon Consulting’s asset management report shows Renfrew has an annual funding shortfall of $725,000 for infrastructure maintenance. Existing budget allocations for roads, sidewalks, sanitary, storm water and water treatment total $1,075,000. Proposed yearly allocations are $1,800,000. Renfrew’s biggest shortfall is in roads, where the town spends about $400,000, compared to a proposed yearly allocation of $750,000. The intent is to justify to the province that Renfrew needs added revenue to maintain its infrastructure, said BĂŠgin. At present, Dillon Consulting is working with 12 Ontario municipalities on asset management plans, including Belleville, Quinte West, Cornwall, Elgin County and Lakeshore.

News - Several wellwishers applauded Peter Emon for the skills he brings to the office of Renfrew County warden. But the largest block of time in the Dec. 10 inaugural session of county council featured Emon’s eight-page speech in which he stressed seven major points. The session kicked off the Greater Madawaska mayor’s second straight term as warden, after he was acclaimed last month. Emon, 53, of Calabogie promised that the county will continue conversations with the federal and provincial governments “to stress the need for the predictable and timely twinning of Highway 17 through the County of Renfrew and beyond. “This is a critical piece of transportation infrastructure which ‌ is absolutely essential for the future and necessary expansion and diversification of our communities, and our ability to compete with the rest of Ontario and beyond.â€? He stressed that Highway 17 is also the TransCanada highway, and that the county will continue to document the benefits of extending Highway 417 to Arnprior, and the benefits of other 400 highways to Ontario communities. Emon’s second focus was on the Endangered Species Act, and how its present form has adversely affected economic development, and how recommendations from the county

(and other critics) need to be adopted. Another point of emphasis was Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL). Emon talked about an early-December fact-finding tour to American nuclear and radioactive wastemanagement facilities he was part of, as part of county preparations for a report to the federal government on the current restructuring process of AECL. With the chance that activities at the world-class AECL facilities in Chalk River could be transferred elsewhere, Emon said, “It remains the contention of this council that AECL is located here in the perfect community ‌ AECL and the laboratories belong here. “To move them, or in any way systematically diminish them, is to ignore the glorious and productive past, the significant present value and the limitless future.â€? Emon also spoke about: • the important evolution and growth of Garrison Petawawa; • the importance of arts, culture, history and healthy living in the county; • council’s continued plans to press for sustained and predictable funding from the provincial and federal governments for infrastructure maintenance; • and how the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus has agreed to conduct a gap analysis to examine the “patchiness of cell coverageâ€? in the region despite recent broadband expansion.

Jacyno suggests Pembroke ready to rejoin count council

yl Gallant. Official on-site greetings came from Col. Kerry Horlock, commander of Garrison Petawawa, Arnprior Mayor David Reid and Pembroke Mayor Ed Jacyno. Reid said three words came to mind when thinking about Emon’s acclamation to a second term as warden: congratulations, thank-you and amaze-

ment. Congratulations, for being acclaimed after gaining the trust and respect of his fellow county councillors. Thank-you, for doing the job so well. And amazement, for Emon’s commitment to his first job (as a mental-health worker), second job (as warden) and family.

News - Renfrew County council’s inaugural session each December is an opportunity to applaud the warden as he or she heads into a new term and the upcoming holiday season. But this year, Pembroke Mayor Ed Jacyno did more than bring congratulations, for Peter Emon’s start of a second term. In addition to providing best wishes and accolades, Jacyno added the strong suggestion that the City of Pembroke is ready to rejoin Renfrew County council. The city hasn’t been a county council member since the signing of separation papers Dec. 15, 1971, but Mayor Jacyno and Warden Emon say they are open to the idea. Jacyno was the last of a list of well-wishers after Emon took the oath of office during

said Warden Emon regarding Pembroke’s prospects of rejoining county council. “(But) there would have to be a lot of discussion and negotiation.” Renfrew County council contains 17 of 18 municipalities located in Arnprior/Renfrew/Barry’s Bay Renfrew County.

the Dec. 10 inaugural session. Jacyno and Emon were part of an early-December factfinding tour to nuclear facilities in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Ohio and Tennessee, as the county prepares a report to the federal government. The report is on how restructuring of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. might work best for AECL, Renfrew

County municipalities and other stakeholders. Some of the conversation was about Pembroke’s possible return to county council. “Perhaps the City of Pembroke has been away from the County of Renfrew for far too long,” Jacyno told county council. “Perhaps in the New Year, we may be able to … establish some conversation, because after all we’re all in it together.” Afterwards, Jacyno told The Mercury, “Perhaps there should be a re-examination of where the city and the county are at present, because we do share financially in services, yet we have limited say in terms of where those dollars are going.” While residents from several Renfrew County communities work at AECL, Jacyno noted AECL’s workforce includes 900 Pembroke residents. “I think it’s very possible,”

Drive safe this holiday season The Christmas season is here, and the roads will soon be busy with holiday travellers. Earlier this month Young Drivers of Canada released its top five tactics for safe driving in winter. Whether you are an experienced driver or a new driver, winter driving can be challenging, the organization said. To mark National Safe Driving Week, Young Drivers of Canada shared proactive driving tips as well as advice on what to do if you get into trouble. “Road conditions can change suddenly with high winds, snow squalls, heavy rain and dreaded black ice. Handling your vehicle in winter driving conditions requires a higher level of concentration and an adjustment in driving style,” the group says. Young Drivers president Peter Christianson adds: “Reduce your risks on the road by driving defensively. Drop the distractions and keep complete focus on the task of driving to steer safely throughout this winter.” Young Drivers of Canada offers five key defensive driving techniques. 1. Keep Space – Over 90 per cent of all collisions are caused by driver error. In order to stay out of collisions you need to keep space around your vehicle at all times. Keep a space cushion in front, behind and on both sides in order to always have an escape route open and be prepared to use it.

Christmas in Renfrew Our little town of Renfrew Wrapped in a blanket of snow, Houses strung with Christmas lights, At night they sparkle and glow. My Christmas bells are singing Outside my front door. To share a little Christmas, Of the Christmas I store. Children are excited, Running to and fro. Building snowmen, Or jumping in the snow. It’s time to make cookies, For that someone to share. If just to say Merry Christmas, Show someone you care. If you can make someone smile, A good deed will be done. For Christmas for everyone, Is not always fun.

So take that minute, Tell someone you care. For there are people out there, That life may not be fair. Snowflakes are now falling, From heaven they are kisses. From our loved ones in heaven, They to send us wishes. Remember at Christmas less stress, It’s not about the gifts you see. Or how much you spend, To put gifts under your tree. It’s about family, being together, Just spreading Christmas cheer. In a house full of love and wishes, To celebrate a new coming year. Merry Christmas to all. Gale Yantha (Troke)

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

It is better to give than to receive To the editor: Opinion - The message is a simple one: It is better to give, than to receive! Our focus for the Christmas season is the act of giving. We have had many discussions about the act of giving and have reached out to the parents at Cobden School for support, not just with words, but with actions. As usual, we have never been disappointed with the generosity and kindness that our students and their families display. Our Grade 1 students have asked our school community to donate mittens for our Giving Tree. We have been overwhelmed at the number of gifts we have received. Our students will be passing these gifts on to needy families in our community through a number of different organizations in the Valley. As part of our discussions, we have read a number of storybooks in class that truly emphasize the importance of giving, and we are planning on reciting one of these poems, The Art of Giving, by Wilferd A. Peterson, at our Christmas concert. 2. Increase Your Following Distance – Poor road conditions make it more difficult to stop. Increase your following distance to four seconds and adjust your speed accordingly. 3 Emergency Stopping with ABS Brakes – ABS brakes are now common on newer vehicles in Canada. To maximize their stopping power, hit the brake as quickly and as hard as you can. Stay on the brake without letting up until you stop. You would only lift off the brake if you were certain to hit something and you had the opportunity to steer into space or something softer. 4. Emergency Stopping with Threshold System – If your car does not have ABS, threshold braking is your emergency stopping technique. With threshold braking, you get on the brakes initially about 80% so you shift the weight to the front of the car then increase the brake pressure progressively. If a wheel locks up, pull back a little on brake pressure. 5. Maintain Control When You Hit Ice – Remember two things if you start to lose control: shift into neutral (or put in the clutch if you have a standard transmission), and take your foot off the gas. Then look well ahead and steer immediately to keep the vehicle straight. Once under control, steer in the direction you want to go. For more winter driving tips, visit www. yd.com. Safe travels to all this Christmas season.

We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the heart: love, kindness, joy, understanding, sympathy, tolerance, forgiveness. We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the mind: ideas, dreams, purposes, ideals, principles, plans, inventions, projects, poetry. We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the spirit: prayer, vision, beauty, aspirations, peace, faith. We give of ourselves when we give the gift of words: encouragement, inspiration, guidance. Emerson said it well: “Rings and jewels are not gifts, but apologies for gifts. The only true gift is a portion of thyself.” Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year! There were two announcements in December; the release of the latest edition of the so-called long-term energy plan on December 2 and on December 12 the Liberal’s announcement on how they plan to fund transit in the Greater Toronto Area, which will give little comfort to beleaguered taxpayers as they get ready for Christmas.

*A few exceptions apply.

Bonnechere Manor residents and staff have recognized the reaching of an incredible milestone for two manor residents. Dec. 11, 102ndbirthday wishes were extended to Eleanor Jeffery and Lucy Curry as residents shared cake and listened to music during an afternoon party. Lucy, who turned 102 on Dec. 10, quietly took in the event. Family members in attendance were daughter Jane Curry of Renfrew, son Leonard of Renfrew and Leonard’s wife Gladys. Lucy’s third child, Dorothy Edwards of Peterborough, visited on her birthday. Lucy, who has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, grew up as part of the large family of John and Mary Ann Friske of Dacre. She enjoys playing euchre, 500 and bingo, and loves flowers, in keeping with her tradition of having a big garden at home for many years. “Oh, I think it’s fan-

It is clear that wind and solar are more social experiments than plans for reliable energy. The problem is the Liberal government has gone so far down this road now that it refuses to admit its mistakes.

In 2011 the Auditor General made it crystal clear in his report that the government made no justifiable business case for proceeding the way it did with its Green Energy Act. As a result of its unwillingness to accept the consequences the Liberals are now doubling-down, or should I say tripling down, on their policy planning to nearly triple the amount of wind energy by 2032. Our white paper on Energy, “Paths to Prosperity: Affordable Energy”, which can be found at: http://www.ontariopc. com/white-papers makes it clear that Tim Hudak and the Ontario PC party would not continue with this disastrous plan.

The Long-term Energy Plan (LTEP) sounds more like an apology for the pain they’ve inflicted on energy consumers. It even has its own built-in messaging. The Liberals’ likely slogan for energy ratepayers is “this time we really mean it.” While it isn’t as dire a message as their 2010 version, it will still mean massive increases in the cost of electricity for many years to come. Much of this can be attributed to the government’s ill-considered decision to go all-in on wind and solar generation several years ago.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, the government has tabled a report by Anne Golden, indicating how it would pay for transit expansion in the GTA. The report offers two options: an increase in the gas tax by either 5 cents per litre, or 10 cents per litre. It seems that whenever the Liberals decide on a plan, it always includes new costs or new taxes to be levied against the people of Ontario. In the over 10 years I’ve been representing you at Queen’s Park, I’ve yet to see any commitment on the part of the government to find ways of reducing the waste, instead of dipping into the peoples’ pockets once again. It’s bad enough that the government currently refuses to share a portion of the gas tax with smaller rural municipalities, now they’re considering taking even more of your hard-earned money. As you know, I have advocated for a long time that rural communities should get their share of the gas tax back. Make no mistake friends, when this government talks about increasing a tax that’s exactly what they will do. They’ll never look at the other option, which is reducing spending. I need only remind you that spending was at $68 billion when the Liberals were elected in 2003. It is now over $126 billion and expected to rise by another $5 billion next year. Continuously raising taxes is just a lazy way to run the government; the tough decisions can be avoided by just going back to the people one more time. On a more personal note my family and I are looking forward to Christmas, as we always do. I’m sure you do as well. It’s an opportunity to spend some time together, exchange gifts, and celebrate the birth of our Saviour. We received a very special early Christmas present this year with the birth of another granddaughter. On November 16th our daughter Emily and her husband Tom were blessed with the birth of a beautiful baby girl - Adelaide Helena Colucci, weighing in at 8 lbs. 13 oz. We are all grateful for her safe arrival. On behalf of all of us, may your Christmas be a blessed and merry one, and may 2014 be a happy and healthy one. 1219 R0082067653

in her beloved New York City, to come to the backwoods of Renfrew County, where every penny was hard-earned. And instead of going to the city bank for money, Mother went to the blue sugar bowl in the cupboard to take out a few pennies from her “egg money. My sister said it was sometimes a sad time for Mother, even though the rest of the family was all caught up in the Christmas spirit. Audrey said I wasn’t to think it was anything I had done to make mother sad. And that made me feel better. Not a lot better. But a little better. And my very wise sister said to me that I was to try to make our mother forget about her life in that far-away city. And it had nothing to do about being good she said. It had everything to do with trying to keep Mother’s mind busy in our home out there in Northcote. And I asked Audrey how I could do that. And being clever like she was, my sister had the perfect answer. I was to say often how pretty the kitchen was

with its hand-made paper streamers stretched across the room, how I loved the smell of her mince-meat pies and how I loved going into Renfrew with her when she delivered her wares door to door. That seemed simple enough to me. And I like to think it worked, as I took my wise sister’s advice to heart. That year was not unlike any other Christmas on the farm during those lean Depression days. As the day grew closer, Mother’s mood changed. Baking consumed many hours. We five children could hardly contain our excitement. The Christmas concert was ahead of us, the smell of the big pine tree already in the corner of the kitchen filled the room, and there were whispers of secrets not to be shared. There was joy in the house. We would be celebrating the true meaning of Christmas in the Lutheran Church, neighbours would come and go,and we would return their visits. And Mother, for a time, put behind her the memories of another time and another place.

Lifestyle - My sister Audrey, I thought, was the smartest girl at the Northcote School. And I knew for a fact, she was the smartest of us five children. Couldn’t she braid grass, knit dishcloths, do crossstitch on tea towels, and recite the Lord’s Prayer and the 23rd Psalm without forgetting a word? And so that day in December, it was my very clever sister Audrey who told me a secret about our mother, that I believed with all my heart to be the gospel truth. And it also explained much as well, why Mother did the things she did on occasion. Audrey said there was a good reason why Mother’s mind sometimes seemed to be a million miles away that time of year. I certainly was aware that her thoughts often seemed to be somewhere else, especially when I asked her a question about our own Christmas which filled me with great anticipation. And the day I asked her if she thought, if I wrote a special letter to Santa Claus, and asked him for a pair of white galoshes with real fur down the fronts, just like bad Marguirite had, would I get them, and I saw a sadness come over her face. She didn’t answer right away, and when she did, I noticed a catch in her throat, as if she was going to cough, and she said I had to remember that Santa had a long list of children who wanted some things he just couldn’t supply. And I knew then, I wouldn’t be seeing the white rubber galoshes with the fur down their fronts. I wasn’t too sure what

Mother had to do with Santa’s decision. But I soon understood what my sister meant when she said sometimes our mother’s mind was a million miles away. It was mid December. Time to put up the few decorations we had. There was the braided rope made of thin cardboard loops glued together and strung across the kitchen, corner to corner. There were the two hand-made wreaths for the frosted kitchen windows, and the big picture of Santa thumb- tacked to the stairwell door. Mother sat and looked at what had been done to try to make the kitchen (the only room in the house warm enough to sit in during the winter), presentable for the holiday season, and she let out a long sigh. Audrey said Mother was remembering the many Christmas decorations she had when she lived in New York, and which she had described to my sister, things like silver bells for the outside of the door, candlesticks made of pure white wax, and glass holders in the shape of small pine trees for the dining room table. We didn’t even have a dining room on the farm in Northcote! Audrey said this time of year, Mother tried, but couldn’t get her Christmases in New York out of her mind. She remembered shopping in Macie’s Department Store, money to buy just about anything she wanted, glass decorations for the big tree in the parlour, and wrapping paper and ribbon in every colour in the rainbow to wrap the many presents she would buy. The way Audrey explained it, I knew then that Mother secretly pined for all that she had left behind

Community - Grade 10 student Emily Moore shared a little bit of Renfrew with the rest of the world in a music video for the band Emerson Drive. When the band Emerson Drive asked fans to submit photos of their favourite place in their town, Moore was quick to submit a picture of herself at her grandparents’ farm for the video, We Are This Town. Moore has been a long-time fan of the band. “They are one of my favourites, she says. “They even follow me

on Twitter, which is pretty cool.â€? Her picture can be seen at the 1:55 mark of the lyric video.â€? Emerson Drive began under the name 12 Gauge in Alberta in 1995. The band mates were competitors in a high school talent show and took part in several contests after the show before winning the opportunity to record professionally. Emerson Drive’s high school success only proves that you can do anything you set your mind to in high school as long as you are determined, and never give up. St. Joseph’s, Inuksuk academies pull together Peewee Wolves capture second tournament title of 2013-14

Peter Clark peter.clark@metroland.com

Sports - The St. Joseph’s Jaguars Hockey Academy hosted special guests Dec. 11 at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. A dozen students and instructor Nathan Brandvold from the Huskies Hockey Academy of Inuksuk High School in Iqaluit spent much of the day with the Renfrew school’s program. Students from both academies were split into two groups. While one group worked on off-ice training in the upstairs hall at Ma-TeWay, the other was involved in drills on the ice. The two groups then flip-flopped places for the afternoon. The off-ice session consisted of warm-ups. Students then worked through six stations of agility under the guidance of Alyson Wendorf of the Jaguars academy program. Stacey McGregor and a number of other instructors handled the paces on the ice. Brandvold said he and his students were pleased to be able to team up with St. Joseph’s. “It is nice of Stacey to welcome our Huskies Hockey Academy to come to the school and share the ice, share some coaching time and some learning time together. We are very excited to be here. “Across Canada, all of the hockey skills academy programs have a similar curriculum. You see a lot of the same stuff going on, onice, off-ice stuff. It’s great for the kids to just have an opportunity to learn some hockey during the regular school day.” The entire trip has been an great experience for the students from the Nunavut capital, Brandvold added. “We flew in last Friday (Dec. 6), so we were in Ottawa for the weekend. Our trip really has two themes to it. The first theme is education. We toured two post-secondary institutions, Algonquin College and Carleton University,” Brandvold noted. “The second part of it is, obviously, the hockey academy. We were in Pembroke on Monday (Dec. 9), Deep River Tuesday and today, we are in Renfrew, so, we are very happy to be here.” McGregor noted that Brandvold was impressed with the Jaguars program. “He could not believe how well equipped we are, the resources we have and the on-ice help we receive.” Helping out last week with the JaguarsHuskies day were Doug Miller, Terry McIntyre, Mike McMahon, Jeff Halk and co-op students Rory Whalen and John Ready. Tom McIntyre and Eugene Sheehan also help out in a regular basis. The hockey academy is worth two credits per year to the participating students at St. Joseph’s.

Sports - The Renfrew Peewee Timberwolves have pieced together a pretty good first half to the 201314 hockey season. The Wolves captured their own tournament title in October, and then reached the Regional Silver Stick hockey tournament championship game, only to be edged by the Bancroft Jets 3-2 in overtime. The Peewee Wolves were back in the winner’s circle Dec 6-8 weekend, bringing home top hardware from the Roger Senecal Tournament in Ottawa. The Renfrew squad went 2-and-1 in division play with a 1-0 win over the Blackburn Wild, and 4-1 triumph over the Athens Aeros. They dropped a 4-2 decision to the Cumberland Grads.

A second 1-0 victory, this time over the Clarence/Rockland Crush, propelled the Peewee Wolves on to the final. They met Cumberland in a rematch. This time, the Wolves prevailed 4-0. Kolby Lister had six goals in the tournament. He notched a hat trick in the final. Colby Bleeks added two goals, and Sydney Smart, Jayce Greer, Tanton Landriault and Liam Todd singles. Bleeks and Todd had first-period markers in each of the 1-0 victories. Todd added four assists in the tournament and Bleeks three. Greer collected two helpers in the final. Jacob Miller enjoyed quite a weekend with three shutouts. Tyson Johnston backstopped the other two Wolves contests - With files from Jeff Rekowski

Holiday skating Cole Turcotte gets his feet moving in an off-ice drill as students from both Inuksuk and St. Joseph’s high schools look on. Kraft Hockeyville contest on

Grant Lavallee Renfrew Amateur Wrestling Club

Sports - Eighteen wrestlers from the Renfrew Amateur Wrestling Club travelled to Kingston this past weekend to take part in two tournaments. The first was a bantam/cadet combined tournament with the gold medalists earning the right to participate in the 2014 Ontario Winter Games in Collingwood Feb. 28 and March 1. Fourteen of the 18 wrestlers were able to enter the qualifier and all but four captured gold, a feat not surpassed by any other club in Eastern Ontario. “This speaks to the hard work and to the RAWC program in place in this county, encouraging and making it possible for many to take up this sport,” says team head coach Harry Smith. TRAINING PAYS OFF

Many of these young athletes have been training for a number of years while others throughout the province are just being introduced to it as they enter high school or possibly Grade 8. The Eastern Ontario team now begins to work together and train in preparation for the games. Eastern Ontario coaches will be selected and team practices will be organized. Placements by our bantam and cadet wrestlers were as follows: • First: Jolie Brisco, Lily Warren, Paulena Oattes, Teegan Tabbert, Aleisha Ciphery, Cole McKee, Chelsea Bernard, Anthony MacLaren, Bryson Lines, Colton Warren. • Second: Travis Inwood, Jarett Laking. • Third: Cole Herbert, Ryan Theobald. HIGH SCHOOL EVENT

Seven local wrestlers travelled to Ottawa Wednesday (Dec. 18) for a high school tournament, to gain more experience and improve on their calibre of skills. It is then time for the local wrestlers to take a break over Christmas and then return, ready for some tough matches in the New Year.

Habitat Regulations for Protecting Species at Risk

SUNDAY

Ontario is fortunate to have a wide variety of plants and animals. Over 200 of these species, however, are currently ‘at risk’. One of the key threats to their survival is habitat loss. Under the Endangered Species Act, 2007, the Government of Ontario has passed habitat regulations for Bogbean Buckmoth, Four-leaved Milkweed, Fowler’s Toad, Laura’s Clubtail, Queensnake and Rusty-patched Bumble Bee and an amendment to the existing habitat provision for Pale-bellied Frost Lichen. These provisions will help protect and recover these plants and animals. The regulations come into force on January 1, 2014. Want to know more about habitat regulations or the Endangered Species Act? Information on the regulations is available on the Environmental Registry of the Environmental Bill of Rights website at ontario.ca/ebr (Registry #011-9021) and on the Species at Risk website at ontario.ca/speciesatrisk. Raiders skate to tournament title Peter Clark peter.clark@metroland.com

Sports - The Renfrew Collegiate Raiders hosted what will become an annual event Dec. 12 – the RCI varsity boys AA invitational hockey tournament at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Better still for the Raiders; they won it, winning two games and tying the other. RCI blanked the Arnprior Redmen 3-0, skated to a 2-2 standoff with the Fellowes Falcons and then edged the Bishop Smith Crusaders in the final 4-3. “We had a strong, balanced attack with production from all four lines,” RCI coach Scott Buffam said. Jacob Collins led the Raiders’ offence while goaltender Dane Brumm supplied solid goalkeeping to backstop the Raiders to the tournament crown. Brumm’s day included the shutout win over Arnprior. “The boys showed great discipline,” coach Buffam added. “We took only three penalties in the tournament, and none in the fi-

nal. That hasn’t happened anytime I’ve coached at this level.” On the same day, RCI boys basketball teams took to the basketball court in Upper Ottawa Valley High School Athletic Association action in Pembroke. The Senior Raiders outscored the Bishop Smith Crusaders 56-35. Connor Jamieson made his presence felt at both ends of the floor with a bits and bites effort – five points, seven assists, four steals, two rebounds and one block. Josh Thero paced the RCI attack on the scoreboard with 18 points while Taylor Wilson collected eight. Matt Murdock was effective off the glass with seven rebounds. Bishop Smith won the junior encounter 43-26. Hunter Stubinsky drained 10 points for RCI. The Raider girls served up a pair of victories on the volleyball court. Cash ’spiel a success at RCC Andy Sklepowicz Behind the Glass

Sports - This past Saturday featured the first Renfrew cash ’spiel hosted by Gord Eady, assisted by Phil Marcella. Teams from Ottawa, Metcalfe and, of course, Renfrew, played two games each around a delicious lunch, and the winner was decided using a points format. Coming out on top was Metcalfe’s Paul Nooyen, Jeff Cumming, Mike Cochrane and Pete Nooyen, narrowly edging the Brian Yolkowskie and Ed Lepack rink (they split skip’s duties) with Dave Eady, Will Barr and Karen Handford, by a single point. The positive experience shared by all curlers bodes well for an expansion next year to 16 teams and, if anyone can do it, Gord and Phil can. In this week’s Low Cup action Renfrew hosted the last set of games before the Christmas break and came up against a strong Arnprior team. The foursome of Barry Griese, Dave Eady, Don Armitage and Andy Sklepowicz played a consistent morning game to win by one. The afternoon game was playing out in similar fashion until Arnprior scored a big four and took the lead into the last end. The Renfrew lads got a break and made some great shots to take four of their own and pull out the tie. The other Renfrew crew, featuring Rob Warren, Don Rouble, Jim Berg and Andy Humphries, couldn’t buy a break and didn’t get the key shot when needed. They dropped two closely fought games. Three wins by Pembroke against Deep River increased their lead once again, atop the standings. The lights will be turned off behind the glass for the Christmas season and will allow this weary scribe to take a break for a week or two, but not before he wishes everyone the very best during the holiday season and a new year full of exciting curling fun.

Sports - The Renfrew Timberwolves ran their Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League winning streak to eight games with a 5-2 win over the Arnprior Packers Friday night at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. One night later, the Valley Division-leading Wolves’ streak came to an end. The Almonte Thunder held on for a 4-3 triumph in the Lanark County town. WOLVES 5, ARNPRIOR 2

Mike Bredlaw of the Renfrew coaching staff noted before the game that the Wolves had gotten off to slow starts in recent encounters. That was no problem Friday as the Renfrew club jumped out into a 3-0 lead in the opening stanza. That, and a yeomanlike effort from penalty killers, was essentially the difference in Renfrew’s eighth consecutive victory. Colin Bradbury, Kurtis Leclaire, Bailey Hein, Troy Taylor and Scott Conroy shared goal production for the Wolves. Leclaire also chipped in with a pair of assists. Dallas Farr and Chris Marchand answered for Arnprior, who outscored the Wolves 2-1 in the middle frame.

Cambren Tymchuk St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Calabogie

Sports - On Tuesday, Nov. 5, staff and students of St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Calabogie, as well as the principal, drove by bus to the curling rink in Renfrew. For most of us it was our first time curling, but we still had a lot of fun. Once we arrived, the first thing we did was put our clean pair of shoes on in the locker rooms. Next we walked into the main hallway where we found ourselves a slider and gripper shoe to wear while curling. After that we got to go out onto the actual rink and into our groups to start practicing. The very first thing we did when we got onto the ice was get used to the slider and gripper that we were wearing. We did this for about 20 minutes and then started another drill that involved us sweeping the ice with our brooms. This drill was fairly easy for all of us so it took us about 20 minutes also. The next drill or technique we learned was sliding with the broom on the ice. We all found this activity fun because it wasn’t too hard, but it wasn’t too easy either. This ended up taking close to 40 minutes, but only because it was a more important drill. The last drill was quite difficult for most of us. In the drill we had to slide while

Andy Sklepowicz demonstrates to Rachel Powell the correct way to deliver the rock after coming out of the hack. holding the broom beside us, which made most of us lose our balance. This drill was quite difficult, but it still only took us just over 20 minutes to complete. Finally for the last 20 minutes on the ice, we got to actually practise curling the rocks to the opposite end, trying to get them into the button. This was definitely my favourite part as well as many others because most of the drills we had

been practising had been for it. It was pretty cool to because a couple of rocks got very close to the button. Unfortunately after this we had to take our slider and gripper off, put our outdoor shoes back on and quickly pack up the rest of our stuff before boarding the bus and leaving the curling rink. Overall, it was a great experience curling and everyone had a very good time.

ST. JOSEPH’S SCHOOL, CALABOGIE

The staff and students of St. Joseph’s Catholic School of Calabogie are shown with Andy and Yvonne Sklepowicz of the Renfrew Curling Club, who put on a four-week curling clinic for the school in November.

Sports - St. Joseph’s Jaguars boys basketball teams put on a pretty good road show last week. The Senior Jaguars defeated the Opeongo Wildcats 44-15 in Upper Ottawa Valley High School Athletic Association action Dec. 9. Braeden Troutman and Evan Naismith led the way with 13 and 12 points respectively. Nathan Dyck added nine. Backed by a solid defensive performances, the Senior Jaguars were back at it with a 41-8 trouncing of the Madawaska Valley Wolves in Barry’s Bay the next afternoon. On Thursday, the Senior Jaguars ran their early-season mark to 4and-0 with a 51-36 victory over the Jeanne Lajoie Chevaliers in Pembroke. A strong effort, again keyed by the play of the defence, spearheaded the St. Joseph’s victory, coach Kip Mulvihill said. On the offensive side, Naismith bagged 16 points for the Senior Jaguars, Dyck 14 and Troutman nine. The Junior Jaguars tamed the Wildcats 27-10 behind eight points from Simon Rowat, and six each by Alex Paquette and Brendan Dumoulin. Stephen Hass scored 11 while Rowat collected 10 in a 44-28 Jaguars win over Madawaska. Brad Shean and J.P. Cassanto added six points. Community - Walmart Renfrew has embraced the warmth of the Christmas season with a $1,000 pledge to keep children warm this winter. The local store has donated $1,000 to the Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) Operation Snowsuit. “We truly appreciate the support that Walmart (Renfrew) continues to give CPAN as we rely totally on grants, fundraisers and donations such as this to keep running,” said CPAN co-ordinator Lyn Smith. “Operation Snowsuit is a program that helps local children stay warm and dry during our severe winter conditions,” added Smith.

A news release from CPAN said, as of Dec. 12, 300 children, up to 18 years old, needed snowsuits, boots, hats and waterproof gloves. For an updated list of the sizes of boys boots, snow pants, snow jackets and snowsuits required, whether for boys or girls, call 613-7352374, ext. 250. “We accept gently-used or new items, as well as monetary donations. “Please make sure that all items donated are clean and in good repair,” the release said. ”We believe that all children deserve to have decent winter clothing; if we wouldn’t put it on ur children we would not expect others to have to put it on theirs.” To learn more about CPAN, Operation Snowsuit or any other programs viit www.renfrewcountycpan.ca or call 613-735-2375, ext. 250.

News - The Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is seeking assistance in identifying a female involved in several fraud investigations. On Sept. 21 a female entered the Home Hardware store in Arnprior. She removed an item from a store shelf then proceeded to the customer service counter where she

Christmas and other holidays in December have many people distracted with shopping and parties and not thinking about thefts. The OPP, however, have seen an increase in shoplifting and thefts from vehicles in December. People are reminded to place parcels in your trunk or out of view while shopping. Remove valuables from your vehicle when you arrive at home or your destination. If you can’t afford to lose it, don’t leave it behind in an unlocked vehicle. Crime prevention needs to be on everyone’s mind as well as the preparations for Christmas. Lock it or lose it!

explained she wanted to return the item but no longer had her receipt. She was provided with a cash refund and left the area driving a two tone SUV, possibly a Buick Rendezvous. The female is described as about 60 years old, with blond or brownish-coloured hair, wearing glasses and gold jewelry, and a pink zip-up hoody. The same female successfully committed a similar fraud at Home Hardware in Renfrew on Nov. 21. It

One male has been charged after more than 150 grams of marijuana was seized. On Tuesday, Dec. 10 Const. Hayley Chaplin was on foot patrol and spoke with two pedestrians. A strong odour of marijuana was detected and the investigation revealed the two were in possession of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia. Following further investigation one person was released unconditionally. A 21-year-old Renfrew man was charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. He was released from custody on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew Feb. 26. THEFT

One male is facing a charge of trespassing after repeated warnings to stay off school property have been ignored. OPP officers responded to a complaint about a 14-year-old male who has been repeatedly warned to stay off the RCI school property. On Friday, Dec. 6 the male was on the property and observed by several people and on video. A charge under the Trespass to Property Act is being processed. Snowmobilers have taken down a fence and trespassed onto the property at the Arnprior Golf Club, entering off Golf Club Road. At this time there are no suspects but area residents are asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 when they observe trespassers in the area so police can attend at the time.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Connected to your community

Children’s Christmas party Avia Ferguson concentrates on her tasty creations as children gather to bake cookies with Mrs. Claus at the Children’s Christmas Party at the Horton Community Centre Sunday afternoon. There was music, crafts and storytelling, and the afternoon ended with an outdoor wiener roast. At right, Santa Claus turns the tables, joking as he pretends to sit on Shaelyn Dobec’s knee. The Team at

Royal LePage O’Neil Realty

Twas the month before Xmas and all through the “Frew” People were bustling, so much to do. For this month, each year, the month of December Is when we do things we want to remember. The town is so pretty with banners and lights. Store windows are lit well into the nights. The Lions club parade has been up the main street With floats and costumes that are hard to be beat. The manger and cradle are now in clear view With stable and animals standing there too. The hospital tree is now lit in the square And Jeff Scott made sure Santa was there.

His hardware windows sparkle so bright Gleaming like stars in the cold winter night. Sister Joan and her children who so sweetly sing Have performed with glad tidings which they always bring. All the schools are having their concerts and such While the children are maybe not learning so much As attentions to holidays soon to be pending And classes for everyone soon will be ending. The clubs are all having their holiday eves With food and warm greetings as everyone leaves. People who care for others in need Are helping with food bank some families to feed. And fireman boots and angel trees piles Are filling with gifts to help children’s smiles. Churches are filled with

carols and love As we celebrate our gift from Above. Friends on the street and yes, strangers too Utter Merry Christmas, Happy New Year to you This time of year brings warm feelings and cheer As well as memories all will hold dear. As students from cities return to the “Frew” And families gather whether many or few May love fill the days of Christmas this year. May you celebrate with lots of good cheer. May you remember to praise God above For sending His Son , for giving His love. So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too To all of the people who live in the “Frew”. Gladys Sidock Renfrew

NATURE

An immature common loon gets stranded merous at others.

Scene from the Hawk’s Eye LOTS TO HEAR AND SEE

Hi Jim and Ila: I have a junco and a white- throated sparrow visiting my feeders regularly. Seems a little late but, I guess the cold weather has sent them scrambling for food. The junco is feeding on millet at the feeder, while the sparrow is scratching under the feeder. We also have the usual for this time of year. Dozens of goldfinches, chickadees, both white and red-breasted nuthatches, a brown creeper, downy, hairy and pileated woodpeckers, blue jays and purple finches, the highest numbers we’ve had here. Also, we are hearing a lot of saw-whet Owl and barred owl activity in the acreage close to the house. I think the barred owl activity may reduce the saw-whet owl activity soon. Finally, we have bald eagle (2nd-3rd year bird) making regular visits. Andrew Ritchie

CARDINALS ARRIVE R0311950802

JIM FERGUSON

The northern cardinals that have for several years arrived at Mae and Allan Craigs’ feeders early in the fall did not return until this past week. Susan McLaren had a pair of cardinals arrive at her feeders lately, later than usual. PILEATED WOODPECKERS

Shirley and Roger Leith have a pair of noisy pair of pileated woodpeckers splitting a dead tree on their property into small chips. These large woodpeckers can make a pile of chips in a very short while if the tree they are working on is dead. ACTIVE FEEDERS

Bonnie and Paul Ouellete have lots of action at their feeder. The male and two female cardinals, goldfinches, juncos, mourning doves, chickadees and blue jays make short work of the daily ration of sunflower, millet and cracked corn the Ouelletes provide for them. Paul says the birds feed most of the day in cold weather.

A SNOWY OWL

THIS WEEK’S FEATURE R0132329063

Lifestyle- Susan Kallies was returning to Madawaska Veterinary Services where she works when she noticed a bird of some kind in the ditch along Highway 60 west of Renfrew. She returned to the spot and was very surprised to find a common loon struggling in the snow. She called us and we advised her to put the bird into a cardboard box and keep it overnight and I would pick it up on Saturday morning. Loons require a lengthy stretch of open water to get air-borne and we would have to take it to the Ottawa River to be released. Cec Gilmour and I were making our rounds for the Christmas Bird Count Saturday morning and we dropped by to pick up the loon. Susan had it ready and she did a very fine job of handling a very feisty customer indeed. Cec and I loaded the bird into the car and drove to Chenaux where there is over a kilometre of open water below the dam on the Ottawa River. We released the loon and it began to fly as soon as it was free. It settled in the swift moving water and when last seen it was diving, swimming and calling to other loons that might have been in the area. We thank Susan for her interest and her expert handling of the loon. It would not have survived without her help.

CORRECTION ROBINS SKIP A YEAR

Hello Jim and Ila: I saw the first snowy owl of the winter season today. It was a big bird, meaning bigger than the usual ones I see, and was sitting high up in the elm tree beside the creek here across from our house. From that vantage point he/she could look over the corn (stalks) field. Sincerely, and Merry Christmas to you and Ila. Maynard van der Galien

Sheldon Stewart reports that the robins that have taken all the fruit from his mountain ash tree in previous years are absent this year. In this season of plenty the birds have very likely found a new crop to harvest. With so much food available the birds have been displaying some unusual feeding behaviour, absent from some feeders and nu-

Last week I wrote that Bill McLaughlin had 16 robins in his driveway but it was David Code that had the robins. David said it was not a problem and Bill said he wished he had the robins feeding along his driveway. I do apologize for the error. Enjoy your birding. Ila and Jim Ferguson, 5313 River Road, RR 5, Renfrew, Ont., K7V 3Z8. Phone 513-432-2738 or email jamesh@nrtco. net

A FINE BILL BOARD: The Bill-Posters Association is not going to be under the imputation that its business is an eyesore. Rather, they could have it considered they are an aid to Art. And in proof thereof, local representative Mr. A.E. Grigg has placed upon his most prominent billboards an artistic scene of the Nativity, a 24 sheet picture in 12 colours. And alongside of it a poster urging aid to the Consumptive Hospital. Also a free gift from the Bill Posters Association to the cause of humanity and charity. LOOK FOR SITE OF NEW DAM: The Hydro Electric Commission sent one of its engineers up to Golden Lake to spy out the land preliminary to making a survey of the lake during the winter for a report on its availability as a site for a dam for further reservation of the waters of the Bonnechere. Town engineer Stewart went up on Thursday by request of Mr. Acres to describe the town’s desires to the visiting engineer. The Round Lake dam was finished some time ago, sufficiently to put a reserve of four feet of water on that lake, on which the Renfrew power wheels may draw during the winter months.

My wife Wilhelmina (Willy) has finished her end of life journey. I have found it a most difficult journey to travel and to observe. Having said that, I must acknowledge the help we both received. That help started with our family doctor (Dr. J. Matosh) and went to include several other doctors. Community Care Assess Center, Renfrew Victoria Hospital, Groves Park Lodge and Goulet Funeral Home. Management and staff of all, dealt with both of us with the highest professional standard and showed both compassion and sensitivity. I knew that Willy was safe and well cared for. I must also thank our friends and neighbours for their support and kind thoughts. Jasper Lafrance

The family of the late Thomas Kenneth McCafferty would like to express their sincere thanks to all our friends, relatives and neighbours for all donations of food, owers, cards, condolences & well wishes, also donations for the Centershot Archery Program during our time of sorrow. Alp, Corinne (nee Lynn)

12 June 1923 – 8 December 2013 Corinne passed away peacefully, early Sunday morning December 8, 2013, at the Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre in Ottawa, at the age of 90. Predeceased by her husband Victor Alp (2012), mother Mary Belle (nee Munro) Lynn, father Hugh Lynn, step mother Catherine (nee Hall) Lynn, sister Lois Lynn, and brother Mickey Lynn. Survived by brother Jim Lynn, nieces Janet (Edouard) Vaillancourt, Mary Ellen Lynn, niece-in-law Margaret (Ven) Bedward, and several other great nieces and nephews, in-laws and close cousins. Born and raised in Temiscaming, Quebec, Corinne went on to study and graduate from nursing at the Oshawa General Hospital. It was in Oshawa that she met and married her husband Victor Alp. Together they returned to live in Temiscaming where they both worked for the Canadian International Paper company. Corinne began her career as the CIP’s town health nurse subsequently moving on to operating room nurse and hospital administrator at the Temiscaming General Hospital. She and Vic spent many years in Temiscaming enjoying family and friends before moving on to Quesnel, BC for a brief period and then back to Ottawa where they settled in to new employment – Vic working as an electrician for the Canadian Mint and Corinne working in a pediatrician’s office until retirement. Corinne and Vic celebrated 66 years of marriage before Vic’s passing in 2012. During her lifetime, in addition to her much loved nursing career and family and friends, Corinne enjoyed gardening, numerous artistic hobbies, engaging conversations, reading (to include her daily newspaper – a must), crosswords, current politics, their boxer dogs, and time spent at camp on Lake Temiscaming. Our much loved Corinne was an incredible personality and will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. The family would like to express our appreciation and thanks to Corinne’s doctors, nurses, and caregivers in both Gatineau 1 South and Ottawa 1 West at the Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre. Sister Nancy Wilson was born in Perth on July 22, 1932 the fourth of ten children of Ruberta Mary White and William Alfred Wilson. She received her elementary education at St. John’s Separate School where she was taught by the Sisters of Providence. She attended Perth Collegiate Institute and near the end of high school she applied to Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in Kingston and was accepted for the September class. However, after having the idea suggested to her about becoming a Sister and having read a couple of books about religious life, she knew within her heart that that was what she wanted to be – a Sister of Providence to care for those in need. When she told her parents that she wanted to enter in August, her father suggested that she wait for six months and enter in February. During those six months she worked in the shoe store and had time to reflect on her decision. It never changed. On February 2, 1952 she entered and made her First Profession of vows two years later. In 1954 she began her teaching career at St. Joseph’s School in Arnprior while she took the two Pre-Teachers’ College Summer Courses. In 1956 she went to Toronto Teachers’ College and obtained her teaching certificate. After teaching at St. Peter’s in Kingston, St. Carthagh’s in Tweed and St. Mary’s in Trenton, she became the local superior of the community in Chesterville, taught Grade seven and eight and was principal of the school at the same time. After teaching grades seven and eight, being principal and local superior at St. Gregory’s in Picton from 1969 – 1972 she spent the next year at the University of Windsor where she obtained her BA. Then she moved into teaching high school at St. Francis School in Smiths Falls. In 1975 she returned to Arnprior as principal of the school. In 1978 she was elected to the General Council but remained in Arnprior until 1985 at which time she was elected General Superior and served in this position until 1989. At the completion of her term of office as General Superior she studied at Regis College in Toronto and earned a Masters of Theological Studies. She returned to Arnprior bringing her leadership skills, her experience and theological studies to her pastoral ministry at St. John’s Parish until she moved to Kingston in 2009. She was assigned as Coordinator of the Marian I Community at the Motherhouse and was a member of the Process of Membership Committee. She remained in these positions until her loving God called her home on November 14, 2013. Sister Nancy made many friends in the different communities where she served many, of whom were the recipients of her care and attention. She was tireless and unrelenting in her service to the poor and marginalized. Sister Nancy is predeceased by her parents, her brothers, John, William and Paul. She is survived by her brothers, Gerald (Irma) of Regina and Robert of Kitchener and by her sisters, Betty Patterson of Ottawa, Sister Irene of the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul of Kingston, Marlene (Jim) Lynch of Omaha, Nebraska and Sue (Neil) Alder of Smiths Falls. She will be fondly remembered by her family, her many friends, and by the members of her religious congregation. The Mass of Christian Burial, held in the Chapel of Mary Mother of Compassion, Providence Motherhouse, Kingston, on Monday, November 18 was presided over by Most Rev. Brendan M. O’Brien, Archbishop of Kingston, assisted by members of the clergy. Rev. Patrick Dobec, a good friend and former pastor of St. John’s, Arnprior, was the homilist. Several members of the clergy from the Diocese of Pembroke as well as many family members and friends were in attendance.
