The Renfrew Amateur Wrestling Club is on the cusp of a special anniversary and plans are in the works for a tournament and dance that will reunite many of those involved with the successful local club over the years.REGION REGION To celebrate 25 years since its inception, RAWC will host the Norm Bujold Rumble on Saturday, Feb. 13, followed by a banquet and dance that will offer the opportunity to trade stories, share memories and reminisce with the .COM many athletes, coaches, parents and other club supporters who have contributed to the success of the organization. It was 1985 when RAWC co-founder Grant Lavallee and teacher Jim McGregor got a wrestling program up and running at Central Public School. “We used to take busloads of kids to Brampton,” said Lavallee. “We’d sleep on the mats and oh – the noise. Jim McGregor could sleep through anything. I was awake all night.” In 1991, Roy Ellis, who had a son wrestling at high school, suggested the club be formed and after the group was named, Norm Bujold became the first president.“We had some older wrestlers and some parents. Rick Klinowski, the old wrestling coach, was part of the board,” said Lavallee. “We started from there with a shoestring budget and we did some fundraising. Our first fundraiser was held at the old Butson’s.”

Every year during the holiday season, there is a special night for Admaston-Bromley Township. Council honoured 11 outstanding citizens in the township with community awards for their efforts over the past year and beyond. It’s an event Mayor Michael Donohue certainly looks forward to, thanking the people of the community. “The community is the people that make this place hum and makes this place tick,” he said. “I always look forward to both this evening and to Canada Day.” Mayor Donohue and clerk treasurer Annette Louis made the presentations to this year’s recipients.

Renfrew Amateur Wrestling Club coaches Grant Lavallee, left, and Norm Bujold, hope to rustle up some support for the Feb. 13 Norm Bujold Rumble, a wrestling tournament and dinner/ dance being held to celebrate the club’s 25th anniversary. Bujold recalled there were two local wrestlers going to national championships the year the club was created. “We needed $1,300 to bring them, so a bunch of us got together for that

fundraiser and by the time it was over we had $7,600. We put that in the bank and decided we should start the club,” he said.

Winter hats, boots still needed While there was a mass drop-off of snowsuits, boots, hats and gloves recently from schools throughout Renfrew County, including those in Renfrew, there is still a need for more donations. The Renfrew County Children’s Poverty Action Network (CPAN) reports that Bell Alliant have been “busy elves picking up donations” around the county. The many donations are appreciated, but there is a shortfall in winter hats and boots, especially for teenagers despite CPAN spending over $12,000 to buy items they don’t have. Renfrew’s newest soup kitchen is an example of a number of groups working together for the betterment of the community. On the second Wednesday of each month, members of the Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Women’s League and St. Joseph’s High School culinary arts students gather in the OLF church hall to prepare and serve a meal for anyone who’d like to come in for some homemade lunch and good company. St. Joe’s chaplain and teacher Jason Dedo said the idea came about through a discussion between school officials and local clergy. Culinary arts teacher Josh Agnesi and his students do a fantastic job of providing the food. “He’s been superb to have his class prepare meals, they bring it in and serve,” said Dedo. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to work with the parish.” “It definitely feels great to be doing it,” said Grade 11 St. Joe’s student Stefan Zawadski. “It’s nice to see our work come together like that.” He’s enjoying the opportunity to work more closely with his fellow students and the parish for the betterment of the community. OLF and St. Joe’s worked with St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Renfrew, which already offers a soup kitchen on the last Wednesday of the month, in co-ordinating this soup kitchen. The plan is to offer the meals at regular intervals. The soup kitchen runs on the second Wednesday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 at OLF church hall. Visitors are asked to use front door entrance facing Lisgar Avenue.

Birds at your feeders in the winter The numbers and species of birds that will be at your feeders and in the field in winter depend on a variety of conditions. Temperature, snow cover, cone crop, fruit crop, open water, lemming crop in the far north, success of the breeding season and shelter options all play a roll. Project FeederWatch is a Canadawide project that allows all ‘citizen scientists’ to help track the abundance and distribution of common feeder birds. The top 10 lists are based on the percentage of FeederWatch locations that hosted a species at least once between November and April. As has been the case for many years the black-capped chickadee tops the list and visits over 95 per cent of all feeders in Ontario, the American goldfinch visited 89 per cent of feeders, dark-eyed junco 87 per cent, mourning dove 86 per cent, downy woodpecker 86 per cent, blue jay 86 per cent, northern cardinal 77 per cent, European starling 65 per cent, hairy woodpecker 61 per cent and white-breasted nuthatch 58 per cent. For those with winter feeder programs in our area the list looks very familiar. It is also true that one feeder will attract a certain species while another only a short distance

ENERGY FOR WINTER

It requires a great deal of energy for birds to maintain their body temperature in Canada. A house sparrow in Panama will burn 14 to 16 calories of energy each day on all activities in summer and in winter. In Churchill Manitoba a house sparrow will burn 27 calories each day in summer and 36 calories in winter, this is twice the amount of energy as is required by birds in Panama both summer and winter. MUST BE CAREFUL

Birds have to be careful not to spend more time and energy finding and eating food than the energy they gain from the food. They rarely deplete local food sources

Mother and Father look back at the year that was And before I went to sleep, I prayed that the next year would be as good as the last. bours?” she said. It had been an up and down year for the crops, Father said, but by some miracle, the hay mow was full, and the grain bins had enough in them to see us through the winter and into the next cropping. And they reminisced on about the year that had been. Mother talked about the cellar full of vegetables, preserves and pickles, and the sauerkraut barrel in the summer kitchen. “Blessed indeed,” she said to no one in particular. Then they both chuckled, recalling how we five kids all came down with the whooping cough at the same time. “And nobody died,” Father chuckled, remembering the many trips Mrs. Beam made to stir up her special concoctions bound to cure anyone of everything. “Sure great to have someone like Mrs. Beam around,” Mother said. “And we didn’t have to call old Dr. Murphy out from Renfrew once.” “Yes, its been a good year,” Father said again. “Goodness knows what the next 12 months will bring, but the past 12, even with a few

bumps along the way weren’t that bad.” And then they talked about turkey-fair day, just passed. Even though it is called turkey-fair, chickens, geese, homemade butter and soap, and Mother’s special sticky buns, were all loaded onto the flat-bottomed sleigh and driven into Renfrew to sell. “Boy, that was sure a stroke of luck, wasn’t it?” Men wearing white coats over their winter clothes walking up and down Raglan street, stopped at our sleigh, and bought every goose, turkey and chicken we had brought from the farm. And it didn’t take long to get rid of the other things

on the sleigh either! I thought this was a good place for me to add my two cents. “Sure were lucky, weren’t we Mother?” She paused for a few minutes before answering, and then she said. “No, not lucky, Mary. We were blessed.” Father was getting up from the table, having recalled all the good things that had happened to us over the past year, when Mother reached over and held onto his arm. “And Albert, today I had enough money in the sugar bowl to pay Briscoe’s General Store what I owed. My bill came to $2.80 cents.

It sure feels good to go into the new year, not owing a cent.” I went to bed that night, just as the year was about to end, with a warm feeling, that didn’t come only from the feather tickings and the hot bricks wrapped in towels at my feet. I could put the talk of the Depression that often hung over our heads like a black cloud, out of my mind. At least for a while. And before I went to sleep, I prayed that the next year would be as good as the last. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? And to all my faithful readers, I pray that the coming year will be one of good health, and whatever comes your way, you will be able to meet it with strength. May your cares be few, and your family and friends be a blessing. With my fond good wishes, and sincere gratitude to each and every one of you.

Both Mother and Father said it had been an up-and-down year, and it was coming to a close. That year, I remember that night so well. We had yet to clear the supper table, and it was unusual for either of them to loiter after the meal was over. Father anxious to get to his favourite spot in front of the Findlay Oval to read the Ottawa Farm Journal, and Mother looking forward to sitting at the cleaned off table to write in her beloved diaries. But that night they stayed, sipping their tea and talking about the year that was about to end. Father remembered the hot summer day, and the terrible storm that killed 11 of our cows seeking shelter under the big tree on the West hill. And I could see Mother’s eyes mist over, recalling the terrible loss, and then seeing neighbours, one after the other, the next day, walk down our long lane, either leading a young heifer or steer to replace what we had lost. “What would we have done without our good neigh-

Best wishes for 2016

As 2015 slips into history, many folks are making new year’s resolutions. But with so much uncertainty hanging over us, it’s a fool’s game. Even in slightly more stable times (2007), a much-quoted study concluded that 88 per cent of new year’s resolutions fail. So instead, let’s make a wish list instead. That way we can blame others if they don’t come true. What do we wish for this area in 2016? How about some snow, for starters, so the many local winter carnivals aren’t washouts and people can begin winter outdoor exercising on their skis and skates. We wish that the damaging wind storms and flash floods that have become all too common in the last few years stay away, or at the very least don’t hit populated areas and area farms. We hope Mother Nature will be kinder to this good earth in 2016, after her shenanigans played a key role in driving up food prices this year. It’s difficult to eat healthy when a cauliflower costs $8. While we feel for our Alberta cousins, we wish that gasoline prices don’t go bouncing back up to the $1.40 mark. We’re already struggling to keep up with the increases in hydro rates. We wish that the provincial government gives us a sign that they’re going to continue with the four-laning of Highway 17 up the Valley sooner than later. Ending the project at Scheel Drive for any length of time doesn’t make sense. At least move it along to Calabogie Road and then Renfrew. Federally, we hope the new Liberal government adheres to its promises about openness and transparency and doesn’t slip

into the arrogance and secrecy all too common in past governments. Municipally, we encourage our county and local governments, many dealing with steeply rising policing costs and infrastructure pressures, to keep the property tax increases to single digits. How about an Arnprior Packers-Renfrew Timberwolves playoff hockey series, preferably in the finals. More success to CPAN as it combats child poverty, a shameful situation in a country so blessed with wealth and resources. Good luck to the humane societies, SPCAs and other animal rescue organizations as they seek public support for their efforts to ensure all pets are treated properly. We wish our health care sector wisdom and perseverance in dealing with the difficult challenges ahead and wish our doctor recruitment committees luck in finding more family physicians for our area. We hope Canadians continue with their enlightened welcoming of refugees fleeing from violence and persecution, and the voices of the naysayers remain few and muted. We wish that those promoting putting Christ back in Christmas also work at putting Christ and his teaching of peace on earth and love thy neighbor back into the Christians who seem to have forsaken them. With no elections this year on any level, we urge our politicians to concentrate on actions and straight-talking, instead of making promises they can’t or won’t keep. Happy new year, everyone. May all your wish lists come true too. Mercury sports reporter signing off I haven’t had an edition of Peter’s Putterings in the Mercury for awhile, and as I step down from this post, this will be the last. After, I’m not sure how many years, I’ll be fading away into writer’s retirement. I know the first time I covered a hockey game, it was the Junior Bs. They were known as the Renfrew Junior B Lions, not the Timberwolves. That was in the 1970s. I guess I’ve gone full circle. Trudeau was Prime Minister then, and Trudeau is Prime Minister now. Eventually, I was summoned in off the street to work here full time. In a quarter century of reporting since, you learn a lot. I’ve learned that I still ‘Columbo’ my way through council meetings. Along the way, you meet some interesting people, and working for a small town newspaper doesn’t limit the people you meet. Kim Mitchell played at the Renfrew Fair a couple of years ago. When speaking to him in a telephone interview three weeks before the fair, the conversation got sidetracked from Mitchell’s upcoming Renfrew gig when we discovered one of his band members and my brother both Sales Manager: Leslie Osborne leslie.osborne@metroland.com Arnprior / WC - 613-623-6571 Renfrew - 613-432-3655 DiSplay aDverTiSing: Paula Inglis - Arnprior/WC- 613-623-6571 paula.inglis@metroland.com Stephanie Jamieson - Renfrew - 613-432-3655 stephanie.jamieson@ metroland.com Alicia Whyte – Renfrew 613-432-3655 awhyte@metroland.com ClaSSifieD aDverTiSing SaleS: Christine Jarrett - 613-623-6571 christine.jarrett@ metroland.com The DeaDline fOr ClaSSifieD anD DiSplay aDverTiSing iS MOnDay 9:30aM

hail from Carp. The Canadian National Women’s Hockey Championship was a highlight here in 2002, co-hosted with Arnprior. The tournament came on the heels of the Canadian Women’s Olympic team’s gold medal triumph in Salt Lake. I got to see Stephen Harper light up the big Christmas tree at Logos Land, although some might wish he were lit up in other ways. And who can forget the good old days of the Brad Marsh Fan Club. It became nationally acclaimed, and then some. There are things you don’t look forward to reporting on also, like accidents. But that goes with the territory. See FOND, page 11

TOWNSHIP OF WHITEWATER REGION

To the editor:

Christmas came early for Hospice Renfrew when the generous people of Renfrew County and surrounding areas donated over $52,000 during Valley Heritage Radio’s Holly Jolly Radiothon. The radiothon was an overwhelming success, thanks to the generosity of our community, and the hard work of several people. A very special thank-you to Jason Marshall, Board and staff from Valley Heritage radio for organizing and promoting this amazing event. Art Jamieson as Master of Ceremonies did an amazing job of promoting our hospice, and sharing personal tributes, and accolades from family, staff and volunteers. Thanks to his enthusiasm and encouragement, the phones were kept

busy with pledges. The musicians who provided four hours of entertainment were first rate and kept toes tapping, hands clapping and people dancing! We are so fortunate to have such talent in our community. Thanks to our team of staff and volunteers at Hospice Renfrew led by executive director Maureen Sullivan Bentz, and including Judy Cobus and Helen McGregor, who worked hard to promote the radiothon and share our hospice story to the public. To the staff, volunteers, and family members who shared their stories, thank-you for bringing a very personal aspect to our motto of care comfort and compassion. Our hospice is very dependent on community support, and it is overwhelming to know that the

hard work of our staff and volunteers is so appreciated. Funds raised during this event will allow us to continue offering comprehensive end-of-life care and services to families across our region, completely free of charge. On behalf of the Hospice board of directors, staff, volunteers and most importantly, the families who need our help, a big thank-you to everyone who took part in the Holly Jolly Radiothon. We are truly blessed to live in such a caring and generous community. May each and every one of you have a safe and happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy New Year. Connie Legg, Board Chair Hospice Renfrew

Fond memories of people, places Continued from page 8

In this business, unless you head for the hills, you are never truly on a vacation. One summer while on holidays, walking the aisles at Metro, chance meetings with people led to three assignments. I actually went to two of them. The coolest picture I think I ever took was of Effie Heintz. The former resident of Groves Park Lodge was 108, and she was petting a cow at the Renfrew Fair. It was a front-pager. The youngest photo subject was an infant, 24 hours off the press, if I recall. There are a number of people I can thank for their support over the years, such as Norm Wilson and Elaine Dick for allowing me in here, and Lucy Hass for keeping me here. You hear retiring professional athletes say how they miss the camaraderie of the dressing room the most upon their departure. I know, that’ll be the case with me. Meeting and talking with the people at the various events I’ve covered over time is what I’ll miss the most. That includes sports organizations, service clubs, businesses, all of the schools, and more. Not that I’ll never see them, but we won’t cross paths as often. Time to step aside, but throughout my years as author of Peter’s Putterings, we were always full of predictions. Some actually came true. So I’ll leave you with one last one. The Ottawa RedBlacks won’t win the Grey Cup next year (2016), but they will win as hosts in 2017.

To all our readers and friends of the arts we want to wish everyone a prosperous and Happy New Year. Where has the year gone? 2015, it was a year when we were exhausted by an election campaign that was too long. A summer that seemed like summer but then it didn’t. A fall that hasn’t stopped, and a winter that hasn’t started. It seems like the world and its problems are topsy turvey. We will survive and we will manage to deal with whatever Mother Nature throws at us. We know that eventually winter will arrive and we will be wishing for that very long fall to return. Artists are people who deal with changes probably better that most. Being of a creative nature we are willing to change with the tides. For instance when that painting goes awry we find away to make things work, change the paint, change the subject what ever is necessary. The right brain can do that. Meeting: Our December meeting was cancelled due to the weather. We will be doing the program scheduled for that night, Wabi Sabi. No it is not a Japanese dish but a way of life, a life of simplicity. In this day and age it is worth looking into. Check it out. An e-mail about Wabi Sabi was sent to the membership and a couple of members were enthralled by Wabi Sabi. Jack Stekelenburg is willing to speak to us and help us understand this way of life, a life of simplicity. With all of that in mind we are inviting you to our first meeting of 2016, Jan. 5 at Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church, 291 Plaunt (please use the Quarry Street entrance). If you are new to the area or coming back to art you are welcome. We meet at 7 p.m. we ask you to bring along anything you are working to display. Coffee will be served (decaf) and friendly chatter a rule of thumb. Please join us Jan.5 at 7 p.m. For further information contact Diana 613-433-3635 or visit our website www.renfrewartguild.com .

tell their stories,” said Lavallee. “Most people remember the trips and not the matches. Cory Hewitt, chair of the anniversary event committee, was a member of RAWC from about 1996-2002. He came from Pembroke to wrestle at the Renfrew club and said he looks forward to celebrating what he’s shared with everyone who’s made RAWC the huge success it is. “The club made a huge impact on so many people’s lives and the community,” said Hewitt. “I’m looking forward to having us be able to reconnect and celebrate that and the club’s accomplishments, as well as look to the future,” he added. Hewitt, who now lives in Ottawa, wrestled at the University of Guelph after his involvement with RAWC, earning the most valuable player distinction one of those years. The Norm Bujold Rumble takes place Feb. 13 at Renfrew Collegiate Institute. A banquet and dance will follow at the Days Inn in Renfrew. Tickets for the banquet and dance are available at Dahl’s, Aikenhead’s and Renfrew Auto, and from board members. Social hour begins at 7 p.m., the banquet at 8 p.m., and the dance at 9 p.m. Cost for the buffet dinner and dance is $25. Cost to attend just the dance is $10.

place other than a city.” Bujold is rightfully proud of the club. “I think it’s safe to say Renfrew has the largest youth wrestling program in the country,” he said. “We’ve won a team championship 20 years in a row.” Both men are excited about the upcoming anniversary events. “We’re holding one of the largest tournaments we’ve ever held,” said Bujold. “We’ll have every age group except seniors.” Wrestlers aged 7-19 will be competing in the Norm Bujold Rumble and the event will make use of both gyms and possibly even the cafeteria. They’re hoping publicity and their social media efforts will help get the word out to all of those who have been involved with the club in the past. “Our struggle is we haven’t been able to get complete lists of wrestlers,” said Lavallee. “We had an old computer program that no longer exists. We’d love to see not just the wrestlers but the moms, dads, grandparents, supporters and business people.” They’re inviting everyone for a trip down memory lane and say there will be plenty of memorabilia, including photos, slide shows and old uniforms, to facilitate the reminiscing. “We’re hoping people will attend and

A large part of what the club’s done over the years is outfit local schools with mats. “The schools we were practicing in didn’t have any good mats,” said Lavallee. “We’ve done a bunch of fundraising.” In some cases, RAWC partnered with other groups, including the gymnastics club, to purchase mats. “Through the years, we’ve purchased a mat for every school in Renfrew and surrounding area,” he said. With proper mats costing anywhere from $8-10,000, that’s a pretty impressive accomplishment. The wrestling club practices at Renfrew Collegiate Institute. At first the group met on the balcony of RCI’s Grant Gym and when they outgrew that space started practicing in the Anne McNeil gym. Practices are held 6-8 p.m., Monday-Thursday, along with Tuesday and Thursday practices for youth at the RCAF Wing in Renfrew. The club’s Pembroke contingent meets at Jeanne Lajoie school Monday through Thursday. The Pembroke group came together last year, explained Lavallee. RAWC is made up of athletes from across the Valley, including Cobden, Arnprior and beyond. What is it about wrestling that appeals to so many local athletes and coaches? “It’s a number of things,” said Lavallee. “The main part is just the camaraderie. In team sports, you compete and you leave. In an individual sport, you’re all there and when you’re not competing, you’re rubbing shoulders and chatting.” Wrestlers make connections not only with their teammates but their competitors, as well. “Most of the kids will say ‘I’ve got friends across Canada,” he said. And while wrestling is a pretty physically demanding sport that causes its share of bumps and bruises, very few serious injuries occur, said Lavallee. It can also be a major boost for the kids who need it most. “It builds a lot of self confidence with a lot of these kids,” said Lavallee. Bujold agrees and said in this day and age it’s increasingly important to keep young people active.

“We all have to work hard to have kids involved in sport. Kids today are less physically active,” he said. RAWC encourages cross training and involvement in other activities. Fundraising is a year-long endeavor, said Bujold. “Our big fundraiser is usually around Easter weekend when we do a tag day. We do a tag day, bottle drives, chocolate bar sales,” he said. “Our biggest sponsor is Mac’s Milk down by Mill Music. They do Nevada for us.” And the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. RAWC has marked countless successes. “We’ve produced, to date, 174 provincial and national champions – not counting silvers and bronze – just gold,” said Lavallee. “We’ve had kids go international.” Among the club’s accomplished athletes is Tasha Eady, who took home a bronze medal from junior world championships. “We’ve been very fortunate and hosted a number of bigger tournaments,” said Lavallee. “We were the first community outside of the GTA to host provincial championships, which we’ve done twice. We were the first to hold Canada East in a small community. We were the first to host senior championships in 2005 in a

Wolves outlasted in freewheeling encounter Renfrew in front at maining to cut a Perth lead to 6-5. But Dylan McNamara sank a dagger into the Wolves when he replied just 14 seconds later to restore the Blue Wings two-goal lead. It also proved to be the game winner. To the Wolves credit, they could easily have folded up the tent, but did not. A second Suckow marker on a powerplay with 1:30 left gave them another chance, before a Gabriel Lauren empty net goal ended it. Danick Genest was the lone two-goal architect to lead the Blue Wings. Nicolas Brazeau, Guillaume Coovi-Sirois, Mathew Labrosse, Marc-Andre LeBlanc, McNamara and Laurin added singles. Scott Conroy paced the Wolves with a hat trick. Suckow collected a pair of markers and Colin Bradbury a solo. Bradbury added four assists and Suckow two. The teams were deadlocked 1-1 after the opening period on a trade-off of Conroy and Brazeau goals, and remained on even terms most of the way until a LeBlanc marker gave Perth a 5-4 advantage with 1:12 remaining in the middle frame. When Genest registered his second goal of the night with 10:54 gone in the final stanza, it marked the first two-goal lead of the night for either team. Both starting goalkeepers went the distance.

Fans were treated to an entertaining, back and forth 60 minutes of hockey in the final Renfrew Timberwolves home game before Christmas. Unfortunately for most of them, they left with their team on the short end of the high-scoring thriller. The Perth Blue Wings held on, and finally sealed the Dec. 22 Central Canada Junior Tier 2 Hockey League contest at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre, 8-6 with an empty net goal. The game was Renfrew’s last at home in 2015. The Wolves completed the December portion of the 2015-16 schedule with a trip to Arnprior Wednesday night (Dec. 30) for an 8 p.m. contest at Arnprior’s Nick Smith Centre. PERTH 8, WOLVES 6

The Wolves certainly weren’t outclassed by the Richardson Division leading Blue Wings. If not for a couple of costly giveaways that found the back of their own net, the game was theirs for the taking. It still was anyway. A key point though, came in the latter stages of the third period. Teddy Suckow scored with 4:54 re-

Perth’s Kevan Dumouchel backstopped the Blue Wings triumph blocking 27 of 33 Renfrew shots. The Wolves Charlie Jensen turned away 31 of the 37 Perth shots he faced. Shot number 38 came into the open net. WOLVES HOWLINGS

The teams divided just four minor penalties, although a cross-checking penalty sentence to Perth’s Brazeau for a hit on Wolves defenceman Jon Rosien in the second period might easily have been deemed more costly to the Blue Wings. A major or check-from-behind penalty could have been levied. Rosein didn’t return to the game. The Wolves scored on both of their powerplays, while Perth went 1-for-2 with the man advantage. Tim O’Connor – who played for the last Renfrew Timberwolves team to capture an Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League championship in 1993 – won the Wolves Christmas Cash Draw of $500. The winning ticket was drawn by referee Ryan Gregory in the third period. Renfrew enters the week-long Christmas break at .500 with a 14-14-and-1 record after 29 games. The Wolves open 2016 at home. The Metcalfe Jets visit the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre Sunday, Jan. 3. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Renfrew hosted the last Low Cup action of 2015, meeting a charging Pembroke contingent. That charge was slowed up abruptly as the visitors dropped three of four. The team of Gary Smith, Dave Eady, Rory Crash McKay and Don Armitage curled well to win 8-4 and 8-5. Rob Warren, Jim Berg, Andy Miller and Ed Hanson were hot then not as they won 13-2 and lost 8-3 with shot making being the difference. Meanwhile Arnprior and Deep River split their games to round out the results. At the half way mark the standings read Renfrew 202 - Arnprior 148.5 - Pembroke 145 - Deep River 118.5. The winners of the Tuesday Ladies afternoon second draw for the Scott Trophy were Barb Westgarth, Louise Jamieson,

Lee Sharpe and Marie Edwards. Second place was shared by the teams of Christine Johnson (Faye Warren, Laura Hanson, Karen Lesaux), Leith Collins (Rachel Leclaire, Joan Eaton, Judy Gracie), and Gert Brydges (Anne Windle, Ruth Blakley, Cathy Wall) with identical 3-2 records. Congratulations to all participants. In Thursday afternoon mixed curling for the second draw the team of Rob Warren, Cedric Wright, Willard Kranch and Laura Hanson won three games for first place. Tied for second place with two wins and one tie each were the teams of Bob Barr and Karl Mann. Third for Bob was Peter Price, second Joan Eaton and lead was Claudette Lockwood. Playing for Karl were Faye Warren at third, Sheldon Stewart at second and Jim Freemark at lead. See CURL, page 19

A shortstaffed junior team absorbed a disappointing setback to the Mackenzie Mustangs by a 31-20 count in Deep River. Liam Retty with nine points, and Evan Hart were the Jaguars top performers on the afternoon. An unbeaten Mackenzie team also prevailed in the senior clash, 47-17 over the Jaguars. The Jaguars split a pair of Upper Ottawa Valley High School Athletic Association senior girls volleyball matches the week before Christmas. The Senior Jaguars were 3-1 winners over local rival Renfrew Collegiate Raiders at the Jag Den Dec. 14. But on Dec. 15, the visiting Fellowes Falcons pulled out a five-set cliffhanger. The was the Senior Jaguars first defeat of the 2015-16 season after opening with three wins. RCI and Fellowes both topped the Junior Jaguars by 3-0 counts. The St. Joseph’s Jaguars varsity boys hockey team captured the Valour single A hockey tournament in Petawawa for a third consecutive year Dec. 15. The Jaguars won all three games by a three-goal margin en route to the 2015 championship. St. Joseph’s defeated Seaway High School of Iroquois 5-2, Northern of Sturgeon Falls 5-2 and Renfrew County rival Jeanne Lajoie Chevaliers 4-1 in the final at the Petawawa Civic Centre. High energy shifts, cycling, passing and strong defensive play were prominent throughout the day for the Jaguars, coach Stacey McGregor said. St. Joseph’s also got qual-

ity netminding performances from Carter Blimkie, Jordan Vandersleen and Cameron Iob. All three guarded the Jaguars goalcrease for one game. A number of players contributed to the Jaguars offence, among them Nick Fleguel, Nick Crozier, Jared Burnette, Tyler McIntyre, Roy McGrath, Brendan Hill and Jacob McGrimmon. The varsity girls Jaguars competed in tournament play at Petawawa’s Silver Dart Arena. St. Joseph’s dropped its first two games 1-0 and 3-0 to the Opeongo Wildcats and Jeanne Lajoie respectively. But the Jaguars bounced back to win their third game 4-3 over Sturgeon Falls in a shootout. Lindsay Fulton had two goals, and then caged the winner in the shootout. Sarah

There were plenty of nice moves both on and off ice during this year’s Upper Ottawa Valley Aces Day. Held at Renfrew’s MaTe-Way Activity Centre on Dec. 12, Aces Day is the AA hockey organization’s annual opportunity for every team to play in the same rink. Comprised of players from across the county, Aces teams from atom to midget took on teams from Ottawa and surrounding districts. The club produces skilled players who focus on teamwork. It also contributes back to various communities off ice. The minor bantam team is a good example. During Saturday’s festivities in Renfrew, the team donated $200 worth of gifts to a deserving family in the community. The 13-year-old boys were given money at a mall with

the expectation they could find a “balance between wants and needs” for the single mother and four kids. “We have a good opportunity to play hockey for the Aces,” said Connor Peplinskie of Pembroke, “so we should be giving back to the community.” Coach Cameron Gage of Petawawa said there is more to hockey than winning games. “We’re not only teaching hockey skills. We’re teaching life skills,” Gage said. Buffie Rathwell of Renfrew County Family and Children’s Services was on had to accept the gifts. Her kids have been through hockey. She knows the bad news stories about overzealous parents and violent players. She also knows the generosity and community leadership that comes from it, too. “I’ve been through it, so I know what happens around hockey,” Rathwell said.

The Broken Chain We little know that day, That God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone. For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide. And although we cannot see you, You are always by our side. Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same. Marjorie Desarmia Nov. 14, 1931 - Dec. 30, 2015 One year ago today, December 30, 2014 our hearts broke into a million pieces as God called you home. Memories can bring happiness when we recall all the special times we had. Memories also bring sadness and sorrow as days turn to nights and we long for one more smile, laugh, hug or just a chat. But God needed another angel. So as our silent tears fall and memories come to mind, just know Mom we love and cherish you. We were blessed to be able to call you Mom, grandmother or just a friend. You are never too far from our thoughts and you will always hold a special place in all our hearts. We love and miss you more than words can say. Members came up with a one to two minute story, with no preparation, incorporating three different words, one at a time, and summarize the speech using all three words in a storytelling type speech. Kay Dunford presented a speech titled ‘Retirement,’ a wonderful humorous story of how busy she was since she retired. Fran Watson, president of Valley Vintage Advanced Club, who is also Kay’s daughter, holds the microphone. Kay is a resident of Quail Creek Retirement Centre.

We hear stories about men and women pioneers like Chief Paul Chevrier, Charles Meech, Granny Meilleur, Moses and Abigail Holt, Ron Bowes, Bill Mason, and many others. In the present day, there are portages around beautiful waterfalls, canoeable whitewater rapids, lumbermen’s graves and shanty camps, and ancient campsites used by paddlers, since Native traders from other watersheds used the Du Moine shortcut to go east to the Atlantic or west to the Great Lakes. The author takes us on a journey down this wild river and introduces us to some of his friends who actively protect the river’s virtues. 26 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, December 31, 2015

News from the Renfrew County District School Board table Susan Humphries

Trustee, Renfrew, Horton and Greater Madawaska

The Renfrew County District School Board usually only meets every six weeks but the December board meeting is special in that elections are held for the chair, vice chair and various committees that are part of the work we do. Congratulations to Dave Shields, our chair and Wendy Hewitt, our vice-chair. Also returning to their positions are Marjorie Adam as chair of program and personnel services and Bryon Morris as chair of finance, facilities and services. I am pleased to remain on the character development committee, and alternate on the SEAC (special education advisory committee). I was also elected to be the OPSBA (Ontario Public School Board Association) delegate for Renfrew County. I will tell you more about these committees in future columns. This board meeting also highlights the director’s annual report, which is full of wonderful accomplishments showcasing our students, teachers and the innovative projects happening in Renfrew County. This guaranteed good-reading is available in full on the RCDSB website (www.rcdsb.on.ca) Here are a couple of highlights from the Annual Report: Graduation rates: The RCDSB has a local five-year graduation rate of 85 per cent (provincial average is 84 per cent) and a four-year graduation rate of 74 per cent (provincial average is 76 per cent.). When we include all of our students reaching their educational goals with OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma), OSSC (Ontario Secondary School Certificate) or Certificate of Achievement, our graduation rate is 93 per cent - a number to be very proud of. Community partnership: We are very proud of the success of our partnership with Columbus House in the operation of the day care centre at Central Public School. Columbus House provides day care, which is home to infants, toddlers and pre-school children as

well as a young parenting program. Plans are in place to offer before and after school programming in the new year. This is an excellent example of the type of community partnering so beneficial to our families and also eases the transitions of our young students into the classroom. French immersion programming: During the 2014-2015 school year, a pilot French immersion class was introduced at Central Public School. This has expanded to two primary French immersion classrooms for the current year. The goal is to have an immersion option in primary, junior and intermediate within the Renfrew Family of Schools. Additionally 25 students from our RDCSB secondary schools (several from RCI) successfully challenged the DELF (an international proficiency

COPING WITH

certification). More secondary school students will have this same opportunity in the spring of 2016. Online Registration: This registration capability was new last spring with more than 147 families using this online process to register their children for school. While families are still required to attend the school with documentation, the process enables families to register for school anytime of the year and from any device. A few other interesting statistics: we have 28 schools, 9,377 students (5,897 elementary and 3,480 secondary), 636 teachers (383 elementary; 253 secondary), 49 principals and VPs and 456 administrative and support staff. Eighty per cent of our funding from the Ministry of Education goes directly to the classroom.

DEBT

A bi-weekly guide on how to manage debt

At Doyle Salewski, we help people just like you every day.

Q: It’s resolution time once again. It’s time to turn the page on 2015 and kick the New Year off with good habits and intentions. One goal that often seems to hit the top 3 is to find a way to better manage our money and debt. Should you include yourself in this group? A: Yes you should. No matter how much you earn, where you live or how much debt you carry, there is always room for improvement when it comes to managing your cash flow. One of the major Canadian banks issued a survey to its clients earlier this year and found that 45% list debt reduction as their #1 goal. No need for complicated strategies. It can be as simple as reducing bank fees and interest on loans and credit cards, investing for the future or paying down debt. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Here are five ideas you can use right now to better manage your cash, reduce your debt and set yourself up for success. Imagine how good you will feel by making a resolution this year and sticking to it! 1. Say no to plastic—cards, not bags. The credit card itself is never the problem, without discipline they make it easy to spend money you don’t have. Paying down your highest interest rate cards first is smart and will save you the most in the long run. 2. Yes to needs, no to wants—there’s a sharp distinction between what people “need” and what they “want”. When you’re in debt, finding the discipline to draw that line is something you need to do!

cheque? That’s it – that’s all you get. Spend less than you make and you’ll stay out of debt. Write that number down and live within your means. 4. Plan a “stay”cation—we all need a break once and a while, but going on a big trip can bring even more problems if you don’t play it smart. So save money by staying closer to home (short driving distance) so you can relax during and after your vacation. 5. Focus on simple pleasures—be grateful for what you have. You’ll be amazed how joy you’ll find by keeping a small gratitude journal each night to list the things you’re thankful for. You know what they say – the best things in life are free! Banks and finance companies make enough money without you adding to the pot. I’m certain you would rather hold onto your money than fork it out in fees and interest payments. This resolution is for your benefit – it takes discipline but be selfish and pay down your debt! If you need help with your plan or are burdened with debt stress, asking for sound advice is a sign of strength and the smart thing to do. Asking sooner rather than later is always better. Call Doyle Salewski today for your free, no obligation consultation. You’ll be glad you did.

3. Boil down the numbers— see that number at the bottom of your pay or pension
