The Bargain! Shop closing its doors Steve Newman steve.newman@metroland.com
The Bargain! Shop, which opened in Renfrew in 2001, is closing its doors for good. The company filed for creditor protection through the courts on Feb. 26. As a result, Bargain! Shop stores closing in eastern Ontario include Prescott and Renfrew. Its stores in Petawawa and Perth will remain open, says Renfrew manager Leslee Gervais, who has worked in the same building since 1986 —first as assistant manager of the Biway store that went into receivership in 2001, then as manager of The Bargain! Shop. Gervais said the family-oriented discount was part of a smoothly-run operation. “You could talk to anyone at head office (in Mississauga),” she said. “They were very open. It was like a big family.” The big family is about to shrink, with 64 of its 230 stores across Canada scheduled to close through a pre-receivership, restructuring process. Gervais, whoʼs married with adult-age children, says itʼs not easy news to swallow. “Iʼm a little down, but I understand why the business is doing this,” she said. “Theyʼre in the business to make money.” The Raglan Street business has three full-time and six part-time employees. Offers have been made to relocate with the company, but itʼs unsure if any of the local staff will do so. Employees were notified of the closing Feb. 27. The closing date is not fixed, but a pre-closing liquidation sale will start in mid- or late-March. Gervais says sheʼll miss the customers more than anything. “We had some really nice customers,” she said. One customer is Jim Riopelle. “Thatʼs a shame,” he said about the closing. “A lot are going to miss it.” Some businesses that have opened, or will be opening, on Raglan Street are Plentiful Pantry, Karrasʼ Way and Wheatless Wonders. The Bargain! Shop began court-supervised restructuring proceedings Feb. 26 under the Companiesʼ Creditors Arrangement Act. Ernst & Young was appointed as the court monitor.

Douglas man dies in workplace accident Steve Newman steve.newman@metroland.com
Wayne Maschke, 58, of Douglas is being remembered as a kind-hearted man who loved fishing, hunting and helping out his neighbours. He would have turned 59 on Friday. Maschke died Tuesday when a regulator being moved into place at the Hinchinbrooke Distribution Station fell on him. About 12:05 p.m. the Sharbot Lake OPP were called to an address on White Lake Road in
Central Frontenac Township regarding the accident. The Hydro One employee was working with a crew replacing a regulator. The crew administered CPR, and emergency personnel were contacted. Paramedics and firefighters attended the scene with police, but Maschke was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ontario Ministry of Labour was contacted and attended to continue the investigation with the Coronerʼs Office. Maschke is survived by sev-
eral family members, including wife Betty, adult-age children Shawn, Jennifer Okum and Amanda Maika, their respective spouses Tanya, Trevor and Ian, and seven grandchildren. Mary Limlaw, whoʼs been a neighbour of the Maschke family for 48 years, called him a great person and a great neighbour who was always helping out someone. “If there was a light switch or something to be fixed, heʼd be there,” she said.
