Council closer to picking design for pool, second ice pad Interest groups gather to provide feedback Steve Newman steve.newman@metroland.com
The Renfrew County Therapeutic Riding Program got underway last Friday morning. – Page 26 –
ThereĘźs no guarantee the Town of Renfrew will even build a pool and a second ice surface. But if it does, the public should soon have a better idea what the expanded Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre will look like. Tuesday morning, nine people met to provide feedback on four designs provided by the Toronto ďŹ rm that worked on the original Renfrew arena at the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. The local group, which included community members supporting the pool and a second ice surface, as well as recreation director Barclay Mayhew and Mayor Bill Ringrose, offered their feedback. From that feedback, the Toronto company is now being asked to modify a particular design within two weeks. That would be in time for the Renfrew Fair, where the design is scheduled to be shown to members of the public, so they can offer their impressions. Construction and related costs are estimated to cost a very minimum of $10 million. The expanded facility would accommodate a second ice surface to the east side of the current outdoor rink and a pool to the north side of the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre. Whatever the cost, the mayor says itĘźs no secret the facility will only happen with provincial and federal ďŹ nancial support. Surveyed members of the public have also indicated theyĘźre not prepared to see a local tax increase of more than one or two percentage points, to help pay for the new facility. At MondayĘźs council meeting, Ringrose said Mayhew would soon provide an estimate of annual operating costs for the preferred design. The choice of a particular option does not commit council to pursuing the project, stressed the mayor. As Ringrose said Monday night, this is a step closer to council deciding if it will proceed with the multi-million dollar expansion – a subject of community discussion, and some dissension, for several years. Championship time Tim Lemoyre Jr. unleashes this drive on the 16th hole. The 19-year-old stood second to Cooper Brown, 17, with nine holes remaining in the Renfrew Golf Club championships last weekend. Ten-time club champion Rob Warren ended up second and Lemoyre took third, as Brown won his first RGC open men’s title by eight strokes. For story and photos, see Page 25.
