Trudeau wows ’em
FUNDRAISER FOR FAMILY A small handful of Renfrewarea residents is organizing a fundraiser for the Popplewell family, following the recent death of Carol-Anne Brunet, 54, and her brother, Wayne Popplewell, 51. The fundraiser is scheduled for 7 p.m. to midnight Thursday, July 8, at the Renfrew Royal Canadian Legion. Brunet was the May 31 homicide victim in a Renfrew apartment building, while her brother died in an unrelated incident June 4. “The idea is to raise funds following their hardship and for expenses from the funerals,” said David Landriault, one of the event organizers. There will be refreshments supplied by volunteers, musical entertainment, draw prizes and a 50-50 draw. There will also be donation jars for personal contributions. “It’s to put a happier ending to such a sad story,” said Landriault. For more details, call 613-432-9972 or 433-9965. Several family members are expected to attend the fundraiser, including Brunet’s children, siblings and mother. “The family’s grateful that the community has pulled together to support us,” said Brunet’s daughter, Stephanie Brunet.

GREAT WALL OF CHINA Renfrew marathoner Hughie Nolan takes a relaxing moment on the Great Wall of China during last month’s run in the Great Wall Marathon. The diabetic, who has taken up the challenge of marathons later in life, says the experience was overwhelming. For story, see the sports section. Photo courtesy of Nolan family
His dad, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, attracted huge audiences. He was one of Canada’s most popular prime ministers, but he also attracted opposition for other decisions, like his evoking of the War Measures Act during the October 1970 FLQ Crisis. Justin Trudeau wasn’t alive then, but he has gone on to become a teacher, a father, a politician, as well as an appealing speaker. He was certainly the latter June 10 in Renfrew. See GIFTED, Page 2

The homicide case involving Dugald Barr Jamieson, 47, who is charged with first-degree murder and breach of probation, has been adjourned to July 21 in provincial court. Jamieson, 47, is charged following the
death of Carol-Anne Brunet, 54. She was found dead in her Renfrew apartment at 236 Hall Ave. May 31. It’s possible the case will also be adjourned again July 21, says Crown Attorney Jason Nicol. June 8, at provincial court in Renfrew, Jamieson appeared before Justice Jane Wilson, who adjourned the case, in the presence of
assistant Crown Attorney Lisa Hawley and lawyer Sharon Anderson-Olmstead. “Hopefully, we’ll have some sort of disclosure for the defence counsel (on July 21),” said Hawley. At that time, visiting Justice Robert Selkirk is scheduled to preside over provincial court. Jamieson is in custody at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre.
